SUBTLE003CD 2nd Rate 2xCD Version – Polska Subtle Audio CD x 2
Irish producer Garth McNamee aka Polska is not your average studio dweller in 21st century Drum & Bass. It’s obvious from those he cites as being his biggest inspirations within the scene – Paradox, Seiji and 4-Hero. His musical digest has always been wide and his productions have also been inspired by the jazz compositions of people like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock and the ambient stylings of Boards Of Canada. “2nd Rate” is a reference to how these outside influences are transposed into the realm of D&B and given a new life. CD1 holds a varied collection of D&B from the inspiring atmospherics of “Good Day” to the jazz band breakbeat of the title track “2nd Rate” and from the dark electronic groove of “Dumster” to the organic sounds of “Reindevo”. Over on CD2 the tempo drops but the diversity is just as evident. “Compatible” and “2 Reflex” raise the bpm count and inject energy and variety to the proceedings. All in all, this is an epic journey – taking in 20 tracks, a myriad of tempos and influences a wide range of instrumentation.

SUBTLE014 2nd Rate – Polska Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl
This is the vinyl installment of the “2nd Rate” project by Irish producer Polska. These tracks are slightly more dancefloor orientated than those on his 2xCD long player of the same name but it’s still perfect for those who prefer the meditative side of electronic music. Opening with atmospheric strains, “Setplace” is an incendiary piece of breakbeat D&B that alternates between darkness and light throughout. The constantly changing arrangement, sharp percussives and wandering bassline patterns keep your attention. Flip over for a special remix of Polska’s “Outvert” by king of the beats, Equinox. The stop / start nature of the original is transformed into a more rugged, rolling affair here which gets more adventurous and cut-up as it progresses. Sweet pads, strings and vocal snatches compliment the beats and the deep sub bass completes a real ‘rough with the smooth’ masterpiece. The third track “2nd Rate” also features on the CD version of this release and evokes images of a live jazz quartet on stage rather than a producer in a studio! The progression from nice-n-easy jazz to D&B onslaught half way through makes this tune an epic journey.Polska is coming from a different angle to most producers at the moment but this is certainly a refreshing take on the Drum & Bass sound.

EXIT023 Weatherman / Shanty – Digital Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. This golden era heavyweight is still in the game and as strong as ever. Having produced some of the finest tracks of the Drum n Bass golden era and recorded for labels including Metalheadz, Photek productions, Reinforced and Phantom audio to name a few, he’s still at it and in fine form once again. Sticking to his guns and keeping his original bass heavy dub style, he’s rolled out two tracks in the same vein as some of his classics such as Gateman and Deadline. If you don’t know about Digital yet then its time to get to know. If you do then know your in for a treat. ‘Weatherman’ comes with the ridiculously fat sub bass that Digital is renowned for, topped with a half time step and shuffling hats and shakers to add pace its not far off being an all out dub track. Classic jungle pads and delayed dub vocals pay homage to days gone by and prove that this music, when done properly can still smash up a club without all the mid range madness that is more common in this day and age. Digital teams up with Scottish Producer Morphy on the b-side and again comes with the heavyweight bass, half time step and dub vibes but this track has a more hypnotic and entrancing quality to it. Dub stabs and laid back melodies wind around the bass like a snake being charmed out of its box. All in all the perfect partner to the a-side and completes the 12” as yet another slice of history is made by this legend.

With the success of our last releases getting props and plays from DJs as diverse as Erol Alkan, DJ T, Martyn, Deetron, & Rob Da Bank we are really excited to present our next slice of futuristic funk for your ears and booty from the extremely talented Joe. With his debut, the awesome ‘Grimelight’, being released on Hessle Audio, Joe is part of a loose group of likeminded and future-thinking producers & DJs that includes Hessle Audio’s Ramadanman, Ben UFO, & Pangaea, and Untold & James Blake. Whilst they all have very individual sounds, they share a vision of dubstep, uk funky, techno & house influenced beats that seem to defy genre.
The A-side ‘Untitled’ is a huge stepping wad of funk, bringing to mind 2-step, early Skream & Benga, even stripped down grime classics like Pulse X, but with a truly contemporary twist. This tune drops hard, and has been a secret weapon of Appleblim’s for some time now – he was pleasantly surprised to see ravers of all ages go mad to it! The flip sees Joe’s more experimental leanings come out on ‘Digest’, but he never forgets the groove and funk. With rolling percussion, steppy sub bass and shiny analogue synth stabs cutting through, it seems to us like a mixture of Mala from Digital Mystikz and Theo Parrish! High praise indeed…

Earwax is very proud to present this huge 12” from ‘Purple Trinity’ producer Gemmy, guaranteed to cause serious sonic pressure on a dancefloor near you! ‘Maroon Chant’ is possibly one of Gemmy’s biggest tunes yet, a carefully crafted dancefloor monster brim with catchy purple melodic synths and heavy weight bass. The intro leads in with a looped tribal chant as the pattern is sucked into rolling snapping percussion before the squelching, ever-evolving bassline drops. The track builds and flows effortlessly maintaining high energy levels throughout. Big tune. HDB036 Bellion – Ill Blu HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
This is the debut release on Hyperdub for north London’s Ill Blu, one of Funky’s most celebrated and promising production duos, who since forming in 2008 have had a string of underground hits as well as recently putting remixes for the likes of Cheryl Cole and Hot Chip under their belts. On side A, ‘Bellion’ is a great example of Funky at it’s most effectively simple and maximalist. It’s memorable, clear, bell-like melody is reflected in the sub bass line and heavy mid range chords while the percussive drums add to the intensity making the whole track inescapably infectious. In contrast, B-side ‘Dragon Pop’s relentless lattice of congas, snares, deep bass drum and percussion seems minimal, but at the same time there is no space for melody within the tracks construction, it’s just that intense. The already big interest in Ill blu is set to reach far wider next week with the release of Kode9’s DJ Kicks album, on which they are included.

FRJ007 Frijsfo Beats Volume 2 – Various Frijsfo Beats 12″ Vinyl
Limited finished copies. ‘Frijsfo Beats Volume 2′ is the second various-artists EP from the eponymous label, marking a fruitful two years in existence. Promise was recognised from the start in the pages of The Wire magazine among other places. Since then, support for Frijsfo’s open-minded aesthetic has grown, with FACT magazine, Boomkat and DJs such as Ben UFO, Pangaea and Tomb Crew getting behind vinyl releases from Sully, Ed DMX, Point B and Kuoyah. The EP opens with a first for the label in a contribution from Geiom, responsible for the Berkane Sol label, as well as material for the likes of Skull Disco, Deep Medi and Planet Mu. Here he irresistibly reworks the lead track from Kuoyah’s recent EP, raising a sweat with a stepping drum track and eking out key changes to expertly tighten up the cinematic drift of the original. Sully is a regular on the roster – championed by everyone from Dusk + Blackdown to Sinden – and he appears on ‘Volume 2′ with ‘Saviour’. Originally distributed as a free download, here the track receives the properly mastered vinyl cut it deserves, maximising the effect of an intense bass exorcism in classic 2003 style. His unique talent for bewitching future 2-step beats is also in full effect, allied to trademark ricocheting samples and a glowing chord progression. Point B continues to unearth hidden connections between Drexciya’s militant funk and the rhythmic flex of 2-step garage. If his gift for rewiring disparate conventions seems to create knotty musical puzzles at first, as with his previous work for Frijsfo – not to mention diverse releases on Combat, SCSI-AV and Orson – it always makes complete sense by the end. Rising Nottingham-via-Bristol producer Sclist ties up a few threads with a remix of a cut from ‘Frijsfo Beats Volume 1′. His version of Lewis Hunter’s ‘Cut From the Wreckage’ was previously included on his digital EP for Frijsfo, which followed a stand-out release for Whistla’s L2S Recordings. Surgically enhanced breakbeats and trademark mechanised glitches take things into angular, suspensefully paced territory in suitably unique fashion.

Fracture and Neptune are back this month with another killer release on their own Astrophonica label. They first released back in 2001 on the infamous Droppin’ Science label, which still influences and shapes their sound. In September 2009 they decided to unleash their own label, a label that is about pushing the boundaries and broadening the dimensions of D&B, so much so they already have support from fans such as Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin and DJ Food. With the re-emergence of D&B and the huge creative capacity this is the ideal time for a label with such genre-pushing potential. This is the third instalment and is a sign that the label is getting stronger and stronger with each release. “Dust Ball” and “The Trunk” have received heavy play across the DnB scene with top DJs such as Doc Scott, DBridge, Marcus Intalex, Zero T and Jubei caning both tracks. “Dust Ball” was also featured on Loxy’s CX11 podcast. Support has also come from outside the DnB scene with DJs such as Laurent Garnier loving this release. The vinyl version of this release was 100% manufactured in the UK and pressed at the legendary Ex-EMI plant ‘The Vinyl Factory’ on high quality 140grm vinyl. This plant uses old presses from the EMI golden days so who knows what other classic records have been pressed before Astrophonica? The organic textures of ‘Dust Ball’ develop over a back bone of tight, snappy beats and an ever evolving bassline while ‘The Trunk’ sees the duo fuse tough 80s drum machines with edgy science fiction atmospheres and heavy low-end to create a paranoid stepper for the floor. Finish copies. Over the past several years, Raphael Johnson AKA SPKTRM has become widely acknowledged as one of the most upcoming producers in the American drum & bass scene. Following his debut release in 2006, he was picked up by some of the scene’s heaviest hitters; including Dieselboy’s Human Imprint Recordings, Evol Intent Recordings, Barcode Recordings and Gein’s imprint Habit Recordings among others; and a strong set of releases (both forthcoming and current) were signed immediately. Always evolving, SPKTRM’s sound has undoubtedly gone through quite the transformation. Today, his productions range from hard hitting, dancefloor steppers to dark, sinister broken beat chaos; and lately his fascination with the fusion of deeper drum & bass vibes with elements of traditional funk and jazz. The only thing that surpasses his production style in diversity is his live shows. SPKTRM has been known to incorporate everything from the harshest of breaks and sub sonic basslines to the smooth, airy sounds of soul infused liquid drum & bass into his sets. During the summer of 2009, he took part in the first wave of the heavy metal inspired concept tour, Monsters of Jungle; alongside such artists as Dieselboy, The Upbeats, Demo, Ewun, Infiltrata, Mayhem and Evol Intent (The crew is expected to reunite in 2010 to complete a full length North American tour). Most recently, SPKTRM has linked up with Los Angeles based producer Gridlok, and is working on tunes for his infamous Project 51 Recordings. He also has additional releases lined up for the new year, as well as remixes and collaborations with the likes of Gein, Demo, Joanna Syze and Dieselboy to name a few. Through constant and tireless work, SPKTRM is rapidly making a well established name for himself; and is an act not to be missed.

Ushering in a new project for Darkestral (Galaxicos), Pearson Sound aka Ramadanman gradually opens out a warmly shimmering pad over delicate percussion track that glows over an undercurrent of soft bass propulsion, and makes explicit an emotive, hazy, laidback vibe for the ensuing long summer days ahead on the delightful ‘Down With You’. Like drowning in a velveteen cloud, ‘Down With You’ describes a place or a state of being that feels wholly desirable. ‘Higher’ alternatively takes you in different directions at the same time, personal, pastoral, dreamlike, imaginary.. summer again but with a ratchet rhythm that keeps you wide eyed at this environment of fantastical scenery he has created. SUBTLE014 2nd Rate – Polska Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. This is the vinyl installment of the “2nd Rate” project by Irish producer Polska. These tracks are slightly more dancefloor orientated than those on his 2xCD long player of the same name but it’s still perfect for those who prefer the meditative side of electronic music. Opening with atmospheric strains, “Setplace” is an incendiary piece of breakbeat D&B that alternates between darkness and light throughout. The constantly changing arrangement, sharp percussives and wandering bassline patterns keep your attention. Flip over for a special remix of Polska’s “Outvert” by king of the beats, Equinox. The stop / start nature of the original is transformed into a more rugged, rolling affair here which gets more adventurous and cut-up as it progresses. Sweet pads, strings and vocal snatches compliment the beats and the deep sub bass completes a real ‘rough with the smooth’ masterpiece. The third track “2nd Rate” also features on the CD version of this release and evokes images of a live jazz quartet on stage rather than a producer in a studio! The progression from nice-n-easy jazz to D&B onslaught half way through makes this tune an epic journey. Polska is coming from a different angle to most producers at the moment but this is certainly a refreshing take on the Drum & Bass sound.

Even with the somewhat dark sound the group can unleash through a sound-system, the future is most definitely bright for Statix. ‘A Night on the Wonk’ is on an experimental tip with highly addictive horn and chime hooks. The Gemmy remix takes the chime section, gives it some of the well known purple treatment and turns it into a highly distinctive but slightly sickly intro. I say sickly but that’s perhaps because I’ve listened to it a lot of times in a fairly short period of time. However we’re then treated to a bleepy roller with moderate variation to keep things interesting. This makes it perfect for an early set or casual listening. ‘Detached Reality’ crackles its way through some haunting vocals and evil guitar riffs creating a tense but soothing atmosphere – detaching you from reality, sinking you into your seat while your mind starts to play tricks with itself. Back in May of 2009, Blackdown posted an in-depth interview with Kryptic Minds and Loefah, breaking down how Loefah started his Swamp81 They spoke at length about the parallels between DnB and dubstep, especially from a label-sound point. Well, at the end of this month, you can own what’s sure to be one of the scene’s more captivating releases to date. What I want to push with Swamp 81 is the gap that isn’t really being represented anymore. The roller, the halfstep… spacious.” What Loefah heard in those first few Kryptic Minds beats is edgy, rolling, stripped back spacious dubstep that was spectacularly well made and also had its own identity– emotive, organic in places, very junglist in spirit– unlike the vast number of producers who tried to clone his sound in 2006, and failed. The first fruits of the partnership are Kryptic Mind’s “One of Us”, a deadly 12″ that encapsulates producers who understand the difference between edgy and too angry; that restraint often has more impact than chaotic release. This deft understanding of the tensions and contradictions buried within dubstep, and how you use them is played out yet further on their new album, “I’m thinking Wax Doctor, Doc Scott, Goldie– that kind of thing. It’s that transitional phase between Reinforced and Headz that is in my heart” explains Loefah. “That’s what I’d like to do with Swamp. And I don’t want it to be labelled as ‘the halfstep label.’ I want it to have that kind of tunnel vision Metalheadz had in 1996, that kind of ‘we’re going this way. I’m not watching what you’re doing, I’m not watching what you’re doing– I’m going straight ahead.’” In that spirit, Kryptic Minds’ One of Us zooms in on edgy 140bpm halfstep, forcing the listener into a headspace where perfectly placed details come into vivid focus, like the hyper-real intensity of night adrenalin. Everything is tautly coiled, as if priming the listener for a flight-or-fight reflex. The tension is barely unleashed throughout the album. “To me the album– and this may be really gushy,” enthuses Loefah, “it’s like a night out. Leaving the house or wherever you are, going through the night and the last track is morning. The sun’s come up and it’s time for bed.” “I think the Kryptic Minds album and the 12″,” concludes Loefah, “it’s just making a bit of a statement. We’re saying ‘you know what? It’s not this, it’s not that, we’re right in the middle and we’re headstrong with it.

Finish copies. Matthew Gonsalves, known as Matty G to the world of music, is a pioneer of the US dubstep scene. Since his debut release on the Argon imprint in 2006, Matty has ceaselessly pushed his unique brand of hip hop inspired, 808 bass workouts, that have been destroying clubs the world over. His 2007 release ‘50, 000 Watts’ shook up the scene with its stripped down breaks and punishing subs, finding its way into the bag of just about every DJ worth his salt, becoming something of an instant classic. Its profound influence on the scene is still being felt today, and it has become one of those tracks that people are still searching Discogs to get hold of, at any price. His 2008 LP, ‘Take You Back,’ cemented his placing in the flourishing dubstep scene, exploring his diverse musical influences and amalgamating the sounds of hip hop, funk, soul, reggae and jungle into a 140bpm template. It still remains one of the most accomplished albums to have been made in the scene. After linking up with Dub Police head honcho Caspa, who remixed his massive ‘West Coast Rocks’ for Argon, he has recently officially joined the Dub Police crew, the fruits of which we will see over the coming months.

Needless to say, it’s impossible to imagine dubstep without the DNA of jungle: it’s prominent in so many ways and places, from Burial’s Foul Play influences to Loefah’s love of the sound itself. Members of the scene used to DJ jungle, from N Type and Kode9 to Jason, Transition’s mighty mastering engineer. In fact the whole “dark” component that makes dubstep distinct from UK garage has its roots in El-B’s twin love of Metalheadz and 2step. Jungle is less an influence on dubstep, more like the foundation on which the whole scene, via garage, was built. After a brief hiatus, we return with a delicate slice of wax that epitomises what LDR stands for – new, original music from hardworking, young artists. After the success of Data’s “Blowpipe” on LD5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like Metalheadz, Critical, Revolution and Tempa, Data brings us a grimy gem in the form of “Liberty City Blues”. Incident from Hungary and Paul SG from Austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent Knowledge Magazine cover CD mix. “Liberty City Blues” is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early Photek or Source Direct. From the outset the tune just bubbles with menace and keeps on building and evolving throughout. Two massive productions from top class engineer Apex, as he makes his highly anticipated return to the LIfted Music release schedule. For the second sampler of the Sync:Saphir album collaboration, the sounds are switched up a bit, bringing in a very heavy remix of Electrosoul System’s Fun (from BLUS004) and newcomer BIONIC1′s Love Machine. These two tunes put a new spin on the usual Blu Saphir and Syncopix releases you’re used to, bringing deep, techy, rolling vibes to the table. You’re all used to Henree, spitting out releases over the last five years on the likes of Blindside, Deep Kut, Sound Trax, Lucky Devil, Phunkfiction, Soul:R and Vampire. BIONIC1 is a newcomer to Drum & Bass, but he’s got a rolled out sound that’s not to be missed!

A. ELECTROSOUL SYSTEM — FUN (HENREE REMIX) Before listening to this remix, you might want to revisit the original to notice the change in texture and sound. Henree definitely lays it down with this remix. Bass heavy and driving, you’ll feel bass quakes rolling through the floor as this one passes through the sound system. The opening resembles the original, but that’s all you’re going to get that hasn’t really changed. The moody chord progression that is stabilized throughout the track is enough to make a spine tingle, while the minimal vocal adds spice and atmosphere to an already amazing work. Very melodic and uplifting, an excellent choice in remix selection for this record!

B. BIONIC1 — LOVE MACHINE There is no one word to describe this track. One second you’re locked inside some type of futuristic space encounter, and then bombarded by techy stabs and vicious bass in the next. Following a sexy and seductive vocal, “Wanna go for a ride?,” all chaos breaks loose! Rolling tech funk is the name of the game here! Fans of labels like DNAudio, Black Reign LTD, Quarantine, Critical and Shadow Law will want to check into this one!

Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

Vinyl copies of EX7001, Excision – ‘Yin Yang’, sold out in a matter of weeks, while the digital release has been sitting pretty at the top of the Beatport dubstep chart ever since it was dropped. Now, following on from their immense first 12”, EX7 is back with an even more impressive pair of dance floor killers. EX7002 has been getting plenty of attention from all comers, with dubstep, breaks and even drum & bass DJs all clamouring to get their hands on it. The A side, ‘Swagga’, was a feature in Excision’s DJ sets on his recent UK tour as sweaty crowds of teenagers rushed the decks shouting “Play Swagga!” in anticipation of its filthy bassline combinations (we kid you not, we feared for our lives…). Not only that, but ‘Swagga’ is the only non-Rusko track that Rusko’s been battering on all his recent radio mixes; for proof just check out his recent Breezeblock mix for BBC Radio 1. EAR012 Chicken Foot – Clue Kid Earwax 12″ Vinyl
It’s been a while now since Clue Kid released his debut single here on ‘Earwax – ‘Halogen’ and ‘Down & Dirty’ (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he’s has mastered his art. The lead track ‘Chicken Foot’ is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge. The first in a series of Clandestine plates devoted to exposing the production talents of Brighton town. Presenting two producers destined to go a long way: Ultrasound and Hizzle Guy. Two very distinct takes on bass heavy 140bpm music, these tracks have been alternately blissing out and smashing up dancefloors around the world in recent months, so here they are for you to continue the trend. ULTRASOUND consist of two Brighton based DJ producers and a London based sound engineer. Between them these three have released a huge number of tracks across different genres over the years, DJ’d different styles of music in venues all over the shop, worked in record shops and are now behind the highly acclaimed “well rounded” label. For their first release as a production outfit Ultrasound have distilled Dubstep through a refined apparatus of trip-hop, soundsystem warmth, Berlin texture and sheer musical sensibility into something both unique and familiar. HIZZLE GUY is a young Brighton based DJ who along with his Gangoon Dubz crew has taken Brighton by storm with his raw and instinctive DJ style and tunes. Dread is an absolute low slung monster of a tune in the rave, at once hype filled and drudgingly weighty, with a loping propulsion and gully vibe thats been sorely lacking from “dancefloor” dubstep of late. Think Slaughter Mob meets Cluekid and you’re part way there. Already getting big support from names like Sukh Knight and Afterdark.

As the name suggests, ‘Blip’ on….the A centres around an incessant beep motif, slowly treated and effectedover time as the tune develops – sliding breaks, deep punchy bass, and then those gorgeous shimmering chords evolving throughout. Hyperdub’s original female producer Ikonika comes with this long-awaited release that lives up to all expectations, presenting two brilliant tracks that set the scene for her debut album due early in 2010. ‘Sahara Michael’ seems cryptic at first, but on repeated listens falls into focus, revealing its complex soul, marrying bright (dis)chords which contrast with the warm undertow of harmonies that flow throughout. The track steps into a bridge passage with a melody that recalls the funky worm melodies of prime G-Funk, extending the theme of contrasting polar opposites that the tune plays with. B side ‘Fish’ chanels early Detroit techno at its most abstract and painterly. Smears of bright vibrating chords flash frantically across the mix, building into thick harmonic meshes backed by a hard drum pattern before they solidfy into a triumphant melody. Strange and beautiful music, in a full-colour sleeeve to match.

RAD001 Medicate – Logos Radial Productions 12″ Vinyl
Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction.

NONCD2 Big Skeleton – The Upbeats Non Vogue CD
If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughter-induced abdominal muscles pains. In this particular scenario, their inspiration was a whispered Brazilian ghetto story related to them by a friend. The story of the Caveraos (English translation: Big Skeleton), a super-tank full of Navy Seal trained Brazilian gang members known to terrorise the favelas of Rio De Janeiro, or on good days, distribute Nike sneakers and free cable. Sounds fucked up right?
Anyway, as you’ve probably gathered by now, The Upbeats were suitable taken with this story, and having already floated the idea of a haunted-house album, decided to title their third album Big Skeleton, out of homage to the Caveraos; and horror in general.

BRD004 Diamonds Shine – Utopia Breed 12 Inches 12″ Vinyl
Approaching the 4th release, and with it’s catalogue of unique artists, the snowball effect is in full motion for Breed12inches. After recruiting Russian duo Utopia back onto their successive 12” with another big release, the Breed12inches camp have now seen all eyes drawn to them, following huge play and support by some of the scene’s major players. Breaking away from the moniker of ‘Lifted Music’s sister label’, it was only a matter of time before audiences and DJ’s perceived Breed to be a rising label in its own right, one they also hope will be around for a long time. Finish copy. If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughterinduced abdominal muscles pains. In this particular scenario, their inspiration was a whispered Brazilian ghetto story related to them by a friend. The story of the Caveraos (English translation: Big Skeleton), a super-tank full of Navy Seal trained Brazilian gang members known to terrorise the favelas of Rio De Janeiro, or on good days, distribute Nike sneakers and free cable. Sounds fucked up right? Anyway, as you’ve probably gathered by now, The Upbeats were suitable taken with this story, and having already floated the idea of a haunted-house album, decided to title their third album Big Skeleton, out of homage to the Caveraos; and horror in general.

In a manic attempt to fuse half step, electro booty bass, niche and primates into one coherent whole, Geiom came up with the delicious mongrel known as Bubbles. WICKEDA001 A Nie Dvamata S Bobi Piem Kafe (Ramadanman Refix) – Wickeda Hessle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Hand stamped ltd edition of 500 180g vinyl. In early 2009, Ramadanman was approached by the British Council to participate in a cultural project between the UK and Bulgaria. The Bulgarian public voted for a top 10 of their favourite 90’s Bulgarian pop songs, which were then offered to three UK producers to remix (the others being Hexstatic and Craggz & Parallel Forces). Ramadanman chose the Wickeda song “А ние с Боби двамата пием кафе” (“And I and Bobby, We are Both Drinking Coffee”), and remixed it. The remix was premiered at a British Council‐organised club night in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, and beforehand, Ramadanman gave a remix workshop session to local producers. Wickeda are a Bulgarian rock band with a strong following. “А ние с Боби двамата пием кафе” was a hit single from their first album Revolution which was released in 1999 and sold over 30,000 copies. Today, Wickeda continue to tour Bulgaria as well as Europe, with regular festival dates.

Redhot hitman Excision meets Paradise Lost labelheads The SubDivision on this longawaited deep, dark funk release, the Hypothermic EP. Hypothermic brings gangsta vocal licks together with the baddest of basslines and slick percussion which combine to sickening effect to devastate the dancefloor. Battered on dubplate by DJs across the spectrum, from Headhunter to Djunya to SPL and the list goes on. Flipside contains the equally sick, but totally different Hypothermic RMX, from the likes of Bristols finest, Komonazmuk, who together with Player 1 mutates the tune into a feast of warped and spaced out basslines which give a different feeling but the same effect, devastation. This one has been cut on dub by dubstep dons throughout the UK and you will no doubt have heard this one at your favorite venue. Winding up the release is the ultradark Titanium, which features heavy guitar riffs and bleak pads, making you want to punch your mother in the stomach. One for the hardcore and headstrong. Quality here, don’t sleep on this.

Finish copy. Unearthed is a new Punch Drunk affiliated label with a mission to reissue classic Bristollian sound system music remastered and cut LOUD to heavyweight 12″ vinyl for the first time. Bass is Maternal is the title track from the legendary original Smith & Mighty long player, eventually released on their own Three Stripe label in 1994 after lengthy delays. It is the manifestation of Smith & Mighty’s proto jungle vision which came to dominate the mid nineties. U Dub is a more traditional dubbed steppers rhythm building to a break beat / junglist crescendo.This first 12″ is fully dubstep compatible and has been recently revived by top selectors such as as Pinch, Shortstuff and Ben UFO. EAR012 Chicken Foot – Clue Kid Earwax 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. It’s been a while now since Clue Kid released his debut single here on ‘Earwax – ‘Halogen’ and ‘Down & Dirty’ (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he’s has mastered his art. The lead track ‘Chicken Foot’ is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge.

The first in a series of Clandestine plates devoted to exposing the production talents of Brighton town. Presenting two producers destined to go a long way: Ultrasound and Hizzle Guy. Two very distinct takes on bass heavy 140bpm music, these tracks have been alternately blissing out and smashing up dancefloors around the world in recent months, so here they are for you to continue the trend. ULTRASOUND consist of two Brighton based DJ producers and a London based sound engineer. Between them these three have released a huge number of tracks across different genres over the years, DJ’d different styles of music in venues all over the shop, worked in record shops and are now behind the highly acclaimed “well rounded” label. For their first release as a production outfit Ultrasound have distilled Dubstep through a refined apparatus of trip-hop, soundsystem warmth, Berlin texture and sheer musical sensibility into something both unique and familiar. With big support from the leftfield of Dubstep and tastemakers like Belgiums Bunzero. HIZZLE GUY is a young Brighton based DJ who along with his Gangoon Dubz crew has taken Brighton by storm with his raw and instinctive DJ style and tunes. Dread is an absolute low slung monster of a tune in the rave, at once hype filled and drudgingly weighty, with a loping propulsion and gully vibe thats been sorely lacking from “dancefloor” dubstep of late. Think Slaughter Mob meets Cluekid and you’re part way there. Already getting big support from names like Sukh Knight and Afterdark.

HENCH010 Drumstick – Giant Hench 12″ Vinyl
Marking the tenth release on HENCH, enter production trio, Giant – composed of Enei, Ekta and Nersa – these boys have been killing it on the dubstep front from the heart of St Petersburg for the last couple of years now. Here they bring us a bit of their dark Russian vibes in ‘Drumstick’ and ‘Swoosh’. A – DRUMSTICK – Squeaking synths and vocodered SFX are the order of the day in ‘Drumstick’, and the tune drops into a wobbly b-line number with plenty of grimy beats and retro sounding sampling. Giant keep it stripped back for the rest of the ‘Drumstick’, with great effect. With heavy subs and intensely dark bass, expect to be blown away by the sheer intensity of this ‘Drumstick’. AA – SWOOSH – If that’s not enough for you, then ‘Swoosh’ over to the flip for more heavy beats. An alarm siren wails for the first ten seconds, grabbing your attention, before the main beat and wobby b-line kick in and the layers of sound build up. Experimental, with jingling sounds, percussion and vocodered clips, the tune swooshes in and out, focusing on different sounds at different times. Top notch – this is going be beyond big, it’s going to be GIANT!

SUB005 Dub Sessions I – Shed SubSolo 12″ Vinyl
Displaying his excellent production skills within techno, Shed moves over to straight up dub sessions with the ‘Dub Shed Sessions I’ on SubSolo. Fierce bass meditative drops circles around the excellent atmospheric keyboard patterns, combined in a way that sounds both fresh and unique, but still rating 100% on Shed’s own trademark sound. Leaning towards a bit of contemporary straight dub techno with ‘Dub Shed – STP Remix’, the focus is on a more direct and present take on the tracks progression, rather than inviting the listener into an already set-up wall of sound. Shaking off the melody from the centre, the spacious patterns reveal themselves as the extreme basslines comes in, removing all doubt about the direction of the track. Taking the very straight up techno track from ‘WAX No. 10001′ B side, Shed displays yet another moniker(?) as Panamax, fusing the same linear groove from the original but taking the tempo down to inhumane tempo and filling the already colourful spectrum with wide percussion and even more slow building electric synthesizer swirls. review taken from the http://thefuturist.se

There’s a kind of psychedelic terror at the heart of this tune but its way too playful to ever become truly menacing….Both these tunes demonstrate the high standard of musical creativity that is coming out of Nottingham right now, but give no indication of an easy to identify style.
