Moving towards the end of the year and it’s time for a temperature change as Critical gets ice cold with the talents of D&B scene newcomer, Foreign Concept. Although a relatively fresh face Foreign Concept has already made quite a name for himself have signed tunes to the likes of Samurai, Ingredients, Shogun and Commercial Suicide. Here Kasra picks possibly the cream of the crop with a release that has been hitting clubs hard all over for the past few months. Sometimes the only answer is ‘Mob Justice’. A staggered break, industrial fx and drifting pads open it up with the by now familiar to most ‘hang from the gallows’ vocal that signals the drop into some enormous droning sub-bass with twisted fills and oldskool amen edits. Cuts deep in the mix on any worthy sound system; a Critical anthem for all the Fabric regulars. Flipping over and label boss Kasra joins him in the studio for a joint venture with devastatingly good consequences. Kicking off with a more regular two-step break, piano chords and old soul vox ‘Show You’ rolls into a bouncing stepper with a surging b-line that keeps things moving with pace. One for the marching crew and another good sign of Kasra’s own production progress. Definitely much for to come from in the future from Foreign Concept.

Radikal Guru returns to Moonshine Recordings with a full length album. The CD entitled „The Rootstepa” contains 12 original tracks featuring such vocalists as: Cian Finn, Brother Culture and Mokey Jhayam. The tracks were recorded in various studios in London, Sao Paulo, Cork and Warsaw.Album have received heavy support from DJ Neil Perch (Zion Train), RSD, 6Blocc, Roommate, Bassnectar and many more. Fans of heavy dub and reggae influenced dubstep will love this one.Radikal Guru aka Mateusz Miller is a producer and dj born in northern Poland well known for his reggae-dubstep mash ups and unique sound influenced by dub originators such as King Tubby, Lee Scratch Perry or Scientist. He gained popularity after releasing a series of vinyl singles on Dubbed Out records (UK) in 2008.He started developing his production skills in Poland making trip-hop and jungle beats in 2004. Fascinated by sounds of Asian Underground in 2005 he put’s out a demo album called “The East-West connection” which started spreading around internet community. In 2005 he moved to Cork (Ireland) where he continued expanding his production techniques and started getting more attention by dropping his dj mixes in clubs around Ireland. During that time Radikal Guru sound progressed further when he started experimenting with dub and wide variety of sub genres including dubstep. In October 2008 he had his first tunes released by Z-Audio’s sister label Dubbed Out records and only after few months he got a lot of attention from listeners around the globe and his music was played in radio stations like BBC Asian Network, Sub FM, Rinse FM, Sensimedia Network and many more. From 2009 Radikal Guru is delivering his sound in clubs and festivals around Europe and continues his quest to this day.

After many years on the jungle scene, in 2006 Jacky started the Little Island project, collaborating in Brighton and Barcelona with UK producer Kion on dubby, deep, rootsy material. Tunes by Kion & Murda started to get rotation in crucial UK dances like DMZ, >>FWD , and SuperDubPressure with djs like Mala, Rusko, Tes La Rok, Joe Nice, Nick Argon, BunZer0, Noah D, Daddy G, N-Type and Itchy Robot picking up on the Little Island sound. 2009 also marked the creation of the “JingBong Ting”, a live act comprised of Jacky Murda and Max Powa. JingBong Ting’s first release dropped in 2010 on WAR records, and the second release , complete with video, “Sundown” featuring Top Cat in May 2011. On the Flip you can find a heavy Ragga-Jungle remix by HoT a DJ and Producerliving in Tula, Russia. In 2009 his remix of „Policeman and Soldiers” appeared on the famous jungle label JungleXpeditions. Subtrakt drops the motherload with an album packed with the deepest and finest cuts of sub-driven machine step, by the masters and bringers of 1/4 step Current Value & Dean Rodell – Machine Code!!!’Environments’ has more flavours than an orgy in a Ben and Jerry’s factory, mixing up machine funk in a 1/4 step style with the likes of the already hailed classic ‘Machine Freak’ and the floor pounding “Circadian,” blended with the deeper dub-based creepers like flat line . ‘In the Shell’ and ‘Confessions’ offer a new breed of dubstep a cross of intense techy rhythms and tight grinding bass are compiled with distant haunting pads and vocals that infiltrate and twist your neurons beyond comprehension. Last, but far from least, are the two tracks from me on the album that sum up the diversities of Machine Code’s  ‘Environments’ – ‘Kjg’ is a broken groove number with a growling bass stabbing at air wherever the intense kick pattern allows. This track is laced with ghostly dubby fx that loosely holds the sanity together within its most disturbing sub-existence. ‘The Shadow’ is the complete opposite. Slow, delicate beats produced to perfection give this monster of all bass room to drive through and collapse lungs in its wake. Ross Allen’s Meltdown Music Recordings is kick-starting into life with this stunning mini album/EP from Welsh native and production talent EVM. EVM’s music holds a fine balance between the contemporary and the classic, between UK garage, broken hip-hop, and the vibe of reggae, house and soul, wrapped in velvety production and a technical style all of his own. Title track ‘Groove Content’ has been a mainstay on Ross’s weekly Ministry of sound show for six months, and it’s now in the hands of Gilles Peterson who has already hailed it as a ‘classic,’ supporting it on his BBC Radio 1 show and tearing it up on the main stage at this years’ Sonar Festival. Huw Stephens of Radio 1 also made EVM’s remix of DJ Vadim’s ‘Elope’ his Record of The Week back in Sept 2010. The other tracks on the EP are of a more down beat nature but equally as inspiring; from the Dilla-esque, tech-hop of ‘Falling’ (which features EVM’s vocal talents), to the vocodered groove of The ‘Slow Jam’ and the teched out boom-bap of ‘D N A.’ Liverpudlian vocalist Amy Wilson features and writes on the track ‘Stay,’ a reggae-inflected garage gem, plus the more forward thinking ‘U Want More.’ It’s a diverse EP; Short and sweet and super catchy.

It’s testament to the enduring power of the emergent and divergent bass scene that an artist such as Cloud Boat can release a two sider of such differing proportions and for it to still sound so cohesive. ‘Lions On The Beach’, the lead single on this, Cloud Boat’s debut release is not your archetypal pop song but it’s still most definitely a pop song. 3 minutes and 33 short sweet seconds of Sam Rickett’s Mogwai-esque guitar swathes and Tom Clark’s haunting vocals pitched deliberately low in the mix, cut through with rolling, precise, drum programming and deadly bottom end.On the flip, ‘Bastion’ reveals Cloud Boat’s more emotive side. They started off a recent DJ mix with a Bon Iver track, which is a good jumping off point for Bastion. That is until the sub sneaks in. The love of enchanting melodies, belies a love of the bass, and it’s this juxtaposition and the lilting tones of the high pitched vocals that encapsulate and unite the tracks on this complex and beautifully programmed single.With the knowledge that Cloud Boat have already been hand picked by both James Blake and Mount Kimbie to support them on their respective tours you can get a feel for where this incredibly fresh sounding debut is anchored in. Joint Forces is a collective of bass fiends from New Zealand. Comprised of Chewie, Mysterious D, and Soul Provider, the group came together from a shared love of the dark beats and heavy bass that once only drum and bass was able to provide. With releases in the hopper for Stupid Fly, Abducted Dubs, and Dub Frequency, the Joint Forces are making the rounds on the international stage with their grimey, techy sound that makes listeners nostalgic for the good old days of 160+ bpms.The boys’ remembrance of the gritty, tech step dnb is apparent in their productions, as metallic snares and dark, grinding basslines bounce back and forth in a dark ballet of bass. On Glidetime, lightly menacing synth stabs play up a dark rave feel before a couple of plodding, grinding basslines fight for bassbin supremacy. On Persuasion, the boys take a more contemporary approach, with a midrange bassline plugging along while a lightly squealing synth makes a play for today’s less patient listeners. Both dark, with a punchy production value, these two from Joint Forces are sure to hit home with dubstep fans with a bit more refined taste.

Tommi is a Helsinki native and Samuli comes from a small village deep in rural Finland. The pair met through mutual friends in 1999, and ever since planned on producing music together, hindered by both working on various projects and shows of their own. The plan was finally realised after a string of coincidences and happy accidents led them to sharing a house in the northern suburbs of Helsinki. A man who should need little introduction – Benga has been famously instrumental in shepherding dubstep music from its inception almost 10 years ago, right through to the global phenomenon it has become now. Having stormed the charts and festivals recently as one third of the mighty Magnetic Man, Benga is still able to walk a delicate tightrope – consistently providing us with credible underground dancefloor music with an accessible edge. The two cuts Benga lets loose here on Kapsize, ‘Faithless’ and ‘Acid Lie’, exemplify this finely tuned understanding of how to work a dancefloor into a frenzy without losing one’s cool.So onto the music… ‘Faithless’ has been a staple of Joker’s sets for several months now – a solid power anthem of a tune. Building up initially with a 4/4 kick pattern and fast chopping cyber samples, ‘Faithless’ soon introduces a Prodigy-esque riff – something that sonically sits between a distorted guitar sample and futuristic synth sound – before laying down the sub-heavypressure of the full drop. A massive club tune by even Benga’s own standards! Frijsfo Beats come with the biggest drop yet in their series of vinyl EPs compiling work from various artists. As usual it’s evidently curated with a distinctive ear, tuned to wilder mutations of garage and dubstep. Volume 3 sees Geiom return, by now a label stalwart, but is largely about new blood, delivering a hefty load of talent to the roster all at once in Cardopusher, Desto and Submerse.Cardopusher will shock anyone who thinks they have him pinned down as a purveyor of jump-up tracks, albeit high quality ones. “Then What” pulls the covers from the Venezuelan’s real talent, for rugged techno soul and the kind of weighty but improbably elastic rhythm section that marks out a cannier producer. Though sharper heads will have clocked his recent album for Tigerbeat6, for sheer rewind and replay value his contribution here stands out memorably.Desto isn’t the only Finnish producer to get ahead in the hype game recently, but he stakes out his territory in muscular fashion. His remix of Kuoyah’s “Convex Gravity” (released digitally last year on Frijsfo) follows two excellent twelves for Ramp Recordings. Unexpectedly but grippingly, his inner bruiser gets the cue to come out chopping and screwing: pitching juke-like drums and vocal buckshot at will and scalding the lot with something like the extra corrosive byproduct of an acid line. Geiom won’t necessarily surprise fans of the rangy capabilities represented on his own Berkane Sol imprint and his Frijsfo EPs, Tone Generation being the latest to hit shelves earlier this month. He should delight plenty however, as he jams a grinding 2step beat with slippery tones and stroboscopic gating, the kind of computer madness Underground Resistance might transmit as a distress call from the nth dimension.Last but not at all least Submerse steps out for the label, arguably in overdue fashion. The hugely popular producer has inspired the diverse likes of Well Rounded, Fortified Audio, Mad Decent and Ministry of Sound all to jump on the wagon in some capacity so far. There’s a strong case that “Bubblin’” is his best tune yet, shying away from more blatant moves in favour of a gossamer touch. Low end dynamics are fully present, but beyond the subs it’s all headroom, giving the merest after-impression of a summer garage anthem space to blossom.

As a result of their effort FOURWARD has released quality tunes on labels like Subsonik Sound, Planet Funk and Fokuz.The year 2010 they experienced the so called ‘breakthrough’ with releases on NASCA Recordings and Fokuz followed by an epic 12inch for the legendary label VIRUS Recordings!The guys definitely didn’t stop there and being on the road now broadened their horizon even further. It’s clear to see that the first half of 2011 has been an amazing one for Demand Records. With their first release jumping straight into the Beatport charts at #1, the second seeing Nymfo’s first ever remix and with the ink still drying on the license request for Demand’s third release to appear on the latest compilation CD from UKF, it’s clear that this label has achieved more than most start-ups. So it’s no real surprise that the fourth outing from the Swiss-owned imprint is something special too. Here we see Cause 4 Concern member and highly accomplished solo producer, Optiv, team up with Renegade Hardware’s BTK to craft two incredible drum & bass tracks with a completely unique feel. ‘Crawler’ features Presence Known on the beats who helps Optiv & BTK to craft a tribal drum-led slice of D&B with expertly placed sound FX and atmospheric touches. This is like a modern twist on the classic Virus sound, flexing delicate and understated beats with winding mid range synths and deep sub-bass. Impeccable!Backing it up is ‘Music Within’ featuring Podage & LaMeduza. Building slowly and gradually with powerful vocals, once again we’re treated to an education in the art of subtle drum & bass. If you’re looking for rinsed out amens and heavily distorted reese basslines then turn your attentions elsewhere, because this track is as beautiful as it is elegant. It won’t be turning any raves upside down, but that’s not really the point of good music, is it?

When I loaded this EP into my computer to pen some words on this cerebral cortex of an EP, it popped up next to an old recording I have of Klaus Schulze and in many ways it hints at a modern update on his sound. Klaus is not as his name denotes actually from Germany, but a classically trained young musician from London. In his short tenure as a producer, he’s already picked up plaudits from the great James Blake and Mount Kimbie. The latter loved him so much they called upon him to remix their recent Carbonated release. With debut EP Tusk we have an initial statement, which sounds too accomplished to be an entrance into the recorded world. Erudite and cultivated, the EP sets a tone for an early evening on a heavy system or an earlier morning on the headphones against an inner-city backdrop. It twists and turns throughout its four tracks. Layered drum patterns give way to distorted atmospherics permeated with that heavy, heavy bass. It’s almost Eno-esque in its structure, so I’m not going to break each track down here. Stick the whole thing on and experience it’s beauty.

The second release from south London based LV on 2nd Drop, but this one is a little different, you might say more international. Basking in the afterglow of their much hyped Kwaito inspired bomb, Boomslang on Hyperdub last year, the LV trio stick the brakes on and crank up the soulful vibes for this release. With well established roots in South Africa, a recording session at the Red Bull studios in Cape Town saw LV record a number of vocal collaborations with the honeyed-voiced Zaki Ibrahim. Zaki’s Canadian and Burmese heritage not provides her with striking looks but also politically charged ammunition for her lyrics. The third angle of this collaboration is a young band from leafy environs of Oxford. After discovering Message to Bears on YouTube trying to make more dubstep / electronic music, 2nd Drop saw the opportunity to link the disparate groups together. Explode was created, with M2B providing lush piano motifs and subtle strings. So, with such great music and beautiful vocals, we had a hard time limiting our remix options! 1st up is the mysterious Mothy with his Implosion redux. Sounding like Mount Kimbe on Novocaine, the original is dubbed, filtered and squeezed into a cerebral paste.

Whoever listened to the early sets of N-Type, Youngsta, Seven and probably tonnes of others should know of Benny Page his dubstep. His signature sound can only be described as a rollercoaster ride of subs, dub and garage all coming at you at the speed of light. Everybody who has been keeping their ears open knows that there is one long lost benny page track that collectors have been aching to add to their collection. ‘Original Killa’ is that track.. hammered early on by the great Youngsta & N-type on their Rinse gave this tune a cult status which lead to countless threads on forums and requests. Subway got the OK for the 12 and now it’s finally ready! But no 12 inch complete with a B side. So what about another long lost Benny Page track? ‘Take You Back’ is no different from Killa its rolls out like a bunch of junglistic vans setting out to a rave, with the soundsystems turned up to max.. Its dark, gritty yet still fresh and full of energy for the dancefloors. It just goes to show that time doesn’t has anything on quality tunes.

The compilation exists as a way to unite the entire Hessle roster, as well as allowing them an avenue to put out work by friends and producers they have been unable to work with so far. The first disc is all new work plus a second has a selection of choice cuts from the back catalogue. There’s also work from producers who they feel have shaped the label’s aesthetic, like D1’s ‘Sub Zero’, whose sub bass stabs were a staple of the early DMZ sets that they initially united over back in 2005. One of their close affiliates, Addison Groove is also featured, his anthem ‘Footcrab’ having done so much to bring the tough tempo of juke to the world’s dancefloors. The subtle pitch-shifting of a looping hip hop vocal and the polyrhythmic patter of rim shots and cymbals on ‘Fuk Tha 101’ are unmistakably his. Another producer previously unreleased on Hessle is synth-mad Randomer whose ‘Brunk’ features an industrial strength kick and finishes up with ghostly pads invoking musique concrete. The disc is rounded off by Bristol’s Peverelist, whose own dub-soaked productions, as well as those released on his label Punch Drunk, owe so much to that city’s rich musical traditions. On ‘Sun Dance’ synth chords bring to mind the dystopian drum n bass of DJ Krust. There’s a single claustrophobic Hammond note held through to the close alongside the echoing sounds of water dripping in a cave. Disc one kicks off with the spritely chimes and shuffling beat of Elgato’s ‘Music’. Untold bring’s detuned chords, jangling glass and a cheeky synth line, breaking down into mutant funky house. Blawan’s ‘Potchla Vee’ reveals some unexpected instrumentation: the skittering of what sounds like the cogs of a clock gives little breathing room to the assault of tribal drums and processed grunts. The Pearson Sound track ‘Stifle’ seems to slow things down, with an adenoidal vocal snippet acting as counterfoil to the percussive snap of the drums, delicate EQing and synth washes providing characteristic texture. Once again on ‘Twice’, Joe demonstrates the effectiveness of unexpected drum sampling, with a disconnected beat cooked up out of error bleeps and the tap of a typewriter. Pangaea’s own contribution is a rave homage; oscillating between synth stabs and a filtered ragga MC sample, the track is layered with a bouncy acid bassline, creating a phantom jump up effect. Romania’s TRG was Hessle’s first release and here builds on his mutant garage template. James Blake, re-edits an earlier Hessle release, bringing the processed vocals to the fore much in the style of his recent album.

Budapest born but now Bristol based producer DJ Madd has carved himself a pretty unique trench within his contemporaries over the space of a handful of singles – mainly released on the Boka and Black Box imprints. Going in just as hard as producers like Benga and Caspa, Madd – known to his parents as Peter Simon – manages to retain a lot of space and atmosphere in his productions, fleshing his tracks out with heavy sine wave pulses rather than those mid range frequencies that seem to get included expressly to make you lose your shit on the dancefloor. Flirting with the funk in a similar way to someone like Joker, Madd has a great command of aerated bass lines, tweaking the best force out of his low end and complimenting that speaker pressure with vibrancy and these little flickers of synth colour that lodge themselves deep in your brain for days In his own words when speaking to the Sonic Router blog last year: “appreciating both Rusko and Martyn at the same time is not a crime,”

Nonplus+ label owners Instra:mental have been working away on solo projects in 2011 with Al Bleek working under his Boddika alias and Kid Drama as Jon Convex. Here we have Boddika’s first output on Nonplus+ after his debut on Naked Lunch in 2010 and prior to his forthcoming EP on Swamp 81. His work has been supported by DJs across the board such as Benji B, Oneman, Scuba, Shy FX, Martyn, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison, Leofah, Skream and Zed Bias amongst many others.a) Boddika ‘You Tell Me’ ‘You Tell Me’ takes us back to the 80s with its electro tinged thumping drums and freaky synths. What at first seems to be a pretty straightforward track slowly mutates into an ugly beast with its pitch bent lead and warping drum grooves that slowly swing so far out and eventually re-sync with each significant transition. Not for the seasick.aa) Boddika ‘Breezin’ On the flip Boddika provides another striped back dancefloor warmer but here he comes with a 4×4 drum pattern. With very few elements he exploits them all to their limits and the track moves with an everchanging undercurrent of acid bass coated with subtle synth melodies that work their way around the bass in a mesmerizing arrangement. Another example of Boddika’s talent for working sound to maximum effect and keeping it simple but effective.

Emalkay continues his unstoppable run of form with the new single ‘Fabrication’, a track that is as addictive as it is hard-hitting. Drifting in on the soft siren call of the vocals, Emalkay filters the bass through the intro, building to the drop of the catchy, mutating bassline. The organic skitter of hi-hats gives the sparse drum pattern its swing, leaving the bass to do the damage! On the flip ‘Massive’ cranks up the pressure with a serious head down steppa. The razor sharp bassline cuts through the track like a knife, held down only by the stomp of the drums, while the ebb and flow of the pads gives an underlying eerie atmosphere to the track.2010 was a huge year for Emalkay. Having been thrown in to the limelight by the phenomenal ‘When I Look At You’ towards the end of 2009, he has continued to penetrate through the scene with a series of quality releases like ‘Crusader / Power Tool’ and ‘Solid State / Battle Suit’. With no sign of slowing down any time soon, he continues to cement his place as one of the most exciting producers around with each new track. When French producer dÉbruit relocated to London, it was just the start of a journey that would take him much further east than Hackney. dEbruit explains; “I lived in a Turkish neighbourhood in London and my productions are always a result of curiosity over the sounds and people around me. I wanted to learn more and try something with Turkish music and instruments so I travelled to Turkey in October, and I’m so glad I did.” The end results of dÉbruit’s travels are the four painstakingly crafted tracks of Şiş Sürpriz (which translates as Skewer Surprise). Traditional Turkish folk instruments are coupled with modern, synthetic sounds on an EP that’s full of eastern promise. Opener Accordé Don combines accordion and darbuka drums (a kind of goblet drum) with “bump-hop” beats, whilst Turkish Ish features zurna flutes, talkbox effects and scything synths. Mezdé’s bassheavy, low-slung bounce deploys the string sounds of the kabak kemane – a violin-like instrument originating from Southeastern Turkey – with darbuka and davul drums. Zurnaflutes and synths return on the slo-mo, chopped and screwed digi-funk of Lil Zurna. Born Xavier Thomas and raised in Brittany, France, dÉbruit’s name is an amalgamation of the French words debris (broken glass) and bruit (noise). His boundary-smashing, genreswerving style deliberately veers towards the chaotic – “I like when electronic music and instruments lose control of what they’re meant to do”, he adds. Şiş Sürpriz is the third in dÉbruit’s trilogy of EPs which began with futuristic electro hip-hop workout Let’s Post Funk featuring Jamie Woon and Om’Mas Keith, and was followed by 2010’s African highlife inspired Spatio Temporel. The trio of releases all feature 3-D artwork by German designer Rainbowmonkey, and 3-D glasses are also included for your viewing pleasure.dÉbruit is currently crafting a debut album based around trips to West Africa and recordings with the region’s indigenous musicians and traditional instruments. dÉbruit has also been honing his live show which now incorporates a three-piece band, thumb pianos, African drums, highlife guitar, talk box and more, all accompanied by live visuals from Rainbowmonkey. The new and improved live experience will be unveiled at the dates below and dÉbruit’s album is due out later this year.

It’s slightly cheesy but enchantingly peculiar and one can’t help but be moved by the sheer amount of emotive musicality present.This musicality is led by the hand into more obscure territories in ‘Takedown’, with its broken beats, chordal pads, and simple melodies creating an ethereal soundscape punctuated by clever yet soulful drumwork.In the great tradition of keeping the truly weird stuff for the flip, the first b-side, ‘Box of Tapes’ unleashes an aural assault of acid infused dissociative chaos, which hangs on for dear life to a solid rhythm and chord motif. This format is 3X12” Vinyl & 2 X CD packaged together in a gatefold sleeve shrink wrapped. The compilation exists as a way to unite the entire Hessle roster, as well as allowing them an avenue to put out work by friends and producers they have been unable to work with so far. The first disc is all new work plus a second has a selection of choice cuts from the back catalogue. There’s also work from producers who they feel have shaped the label’s aesthetic, like D1’s ‘Sub Zero’, whose sub bass stabs were a staple of the early DMZ sets that they initially united over back in 2005. One of their close affiliates, Addison Groove is also featured, his anthem ‘Footcrab’ having done so much to bring the tough tempo of juke to the world’s dancefloors. The subtle pitch-shifting of a looping hip hop vocal and the polyrhythmic patter of rim shots and cymbals on ‘Fuk Tha 101’ are unmistakably his. Another producer previously unreleased on Hessle is synth-mad Randomer whose ‘Brunk’ features an industrial strength kick and finishes up with ghostly pads invoking musique concrete. The disc is rounded off by Bristol’s Peverelist, whose own dub-soaked productions, as well as those released on his label Punch Drunk, owe so much to that city’srich musical traditions. On ‘Sun Dance’ synth chords bring to mind the dystopian drum n bass of DJ Krust, the track driven forwarded by paper-like hi-hats and cymbals. There’s a single claustrophobic Hammond note held through to the close alongside the echoing sounds of water dripping in a cave.Disc one kicks off with the spritely chimes and shuffling beat of Elgato’s ‘Music’, whose muted vocal chant was used to such beautiful effect in Kennedy’s recent FABRICLIVE mix. Untold bring’s detuned chords, jangling glass and a cheeky synth line, breaking down into mutant funky house. Blawan’s ‘Potchla Vee’ reveals some unexpected instrumentation: the skittering of what sounds like the cogs of a clock gives little breathing room to the assault of tribal drums and processed grunts. The Pearson Sound track ‘Stifle’ seems to slow things down, with an adenoidal vocal snippet acting as counterfoil to the percussive snap of the drums, delicate EQing and synth washes providing characteristic texture. Once again on ‘Twice’, Joe demonstrates the effectiveness of unexpected drum sampling, with a disconnected beat cooked up out of error bleeps and the tap of a typewriter. Pangaea’s own contribution is a rave homage; oscillating between synth stabs and a filtered ragga MC sample, the track is layered with a bouncy acid bassline, creating a phantom jump up effect. Romania’s TRG was Hessle’s first release and here builds on his mutant garage template, with a reverb-soaked drum kit jostling against some analogue pads and a seagull-sounding distorted warble. James Blake, re-edits an earlier Hessle release, bringing the processed vocals to the fore much in the style of his recent album. It’s soul music that’s undecidedly electronic, the vocals screwed and chopped into the background, a virtuoso display of arrangement ordering a lacklustre pair of cowbells, a chorus of shuffles, croaks and pads into an infectious slow burner.

Joe Seven makes his debut on Exit records with the second of the Exit 10” series of which the first featured his ‘They Live’ collaboration partner Consequence. Here we have an insight into what Joe Seven is capable of on his own and the individual contributions to the They Live project become more apparent.‘Restionaire’ First off we have the eerie ambience of ‘Restionaire’ with its glitchy and heavily swung beats layered with an underlying 4/4 kick for this slice of minimal techno. Pads and melodies creep in and out amongst distorted sound effects and electric percussion that keep the vibe very extra terrestrial.‘The Cous’ offers more of a stripped back and melodic but still quite robotic sound. No doubt influenced by the legendary Kraftwerk legacy, this track has all the retro analogue qualities that make for a great piece of listening and with its catchy synth bass hook and classic drum machine beats it’s hard to resist some robo body popping.

The first Immerse release of 2011 sees the label taking on a fresh approach while retaining the same atmospherics that have made it an essential fixture in the Bristol music canon. Outboxx are made up of Jacob Martin and Matt Lambert, and their sound is rooted in groovy, analogue house music. With an emphasis on jamming, there’s a loose, live feel to these tracks that has an instant appeal but drags you deeper with each listen. ‘Kate Libby’ kicks off on a swung beat and warm pads, before dropping down to P-funk bass and sparse synth flourishes. ‘Bertie’s Groove’ places jazzy Rhodes playing at the front of the mix with a classic drum machine workout ticking away in the background. This is soulful, authentic house music with not a clinical MIDI pattern in earshot. Despite coming from a different angle, the Outboxx tracks slip neatly into the Immerse legacy thus far, pointing the way for a year filled with more of the spacious, haunting club music the label has become renowned for.

On his inaugural release for Vicious Audio Dubtek stays true to his roots, creating deep bass soundscapes with a heavy sound while managing to stay intelligent and away from anything that could be described as ‘bro’.  Fever plods along through the night, as light siren stabs and ghostly ambience create a sense of space between the kick-snare attacks and the beastly bass line. On The Tennant, things start off harmlessly enough but get decidedly darker as a heavy, chugging bass line pounds along at a steady clip.

Comprised of 11 tracks, ‘Eclipse’ is a bold and powerful album encapsulating perfectly everything that makes Emalkay such a prodigious talent, effortlessly showcasing the depth and diversity of his sound while always remaining true to his inimitable style. While keeping the tempo around 140bpm, Emalkay experiments with new rhythms and sounds, delving deep into his own musical DNA to create something unique and fresh. D1 has once again come up with the goods, and delivered two brilliant old skool-influenced dancefloor tracks. ‘Flood Of Emotions’ featuring renowned vocalist Jenna G, showcases D1′s trademark melodic sensibility, while maintaining the tough drums and pure bass pressure that makes UK bass music so exciting and impactful. Driven by a classic hardcore break, the track penetrates right through you while the uplifting melody, complimented by Jenna’s vocals, washes over you beautifully. ‘Bleeps To Broadway’ takes similar rave influences, this time moulding them around tough, stripped down drums and futuristic bleeps. ‘Bleeps To Broadway’ is also accompanied by the 130 mix, which opens up the track, slowing the groove down and giving it some extra room to breathe.

D1 was one of the earliest proponents of the emerging dubstep sound, and has remained one of the scene’s most creative and exciting producers ever since. Responsible for a number of seminal dubstep tracks, he has been a long-time Dub Police affiliate and has had support from all of the biggest players in the scene, also releasing tracks on esteemed labels like Tempa, Soulja and Dub Files. He continues to push his sound forward and evolve with each and every release, and never fails to surprise! Judging on the pure quality of these tracks, 2011 is set to be a big year for D1…
