Irish producer Garth McNamee aka Polska is not your average studio dweller in 21st century Drum & Bass. It’s obvious from those he cites as being his biggest inspirations within the scene – Paradox, Seiji and 4-Hero. His musical digest has always been wide and his productions have also been inspired by the jazz compositions of people like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock and the ambient stylings of Boards Of Canada. “2nd Rate” is a reference to how these outside influences are transposed into the realm of D&B and given a new life. CD1 holds a varied collection of D&B from the inspiring atmospherics of “Good Day” to the jazz band breakbeat of the title track “2nd Rate” and from the dark electronic groove of “Dumster” to the organic sounds of “Reindevo”. Over on CD2 the tempo drops but the diversity is just as evident. “Compatible” and “2 Reflex” raise the bpm count and inject energy and variety to the proceedings. All in all, this is an epic journey – taking in 20 tracks, a myriad of tempos and influences a wide range of instrumentation.

SUBTLE014 2nd Rate – Polska Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl
This is the vinyl installment of the “2nd Rate” project by Irish producer Polska. These tracks are slightly more dancefloor orientated than those on his 2xCD long player of the same name but it’s still perfect for those who prefer the meditative side of electronic music. Opening with atmospheric strains, “Setplace” is an incendiary piece of breakbeat D&B that alternates between darkness and light throughout. The constantly changing arrangement, sharp percussives and wandering bassline patterns keep your attention. Flip over for a special remix of Polska’s “Outvert” by king of the beats, Equinox. The stop / start nature of the original is transformed into a more rugged, rolling affair here which gets more adventurous and cut-up as it progresses. Sweet pads, strings and vocal snatches compliment the beats and the deep sub bass completes a real ‘rough with the smooth’ masterpiece. The third track “2nd Rate” also features on the CD version of this release and evokes images of a live jazz quartet on stage rather than a producer in a studio! The progression from nice-n-easy jazz to D&B onslaught half way through makes this tune an epic journey.Polska is coming from a different angle to most producers at the moment but this is certainly a refreshing take on the Drum & Bass sound.

Finish copy promo. This golden era heavyweight is still in the game and as strong as ever. Having produced some of the finest tracks of the Drum n Bass golden era and recorded for labels including Metalheadz, Photek productions, Reinforced and Phantom audio to name a few, he’s still at it and in fine form once again. Sticking to his guns and keeping his original bass heavy dub style, he’s rolled out two tracks in the same vein as some of his classics such as Gateman and Deadline. If you don’t know about Digital yet then its time to get to know. If you do then know your in for a treat. ‘Weatherman’ comes with the ridiculously fat sub bass that Digital is renowned for, topped with a half time step and shuffling hats and shakers to add pace its not far off being an all out dub track. Classic jungle pads and delayed dub vocals pay homage to days gone by and prove that this music, when done properly can still smash up a club without all the mid range madness that is more common in this day and age. Digital teams up with Scottish Producer Morphy on the b-side and again comes with the heavyweight bass, half time step and dub vibes but this track has a more hypnotic and entrancing quality to it. Dub stabs and laid back melodies wind around the bass like a snake being charmed out of its box. All in all the perfect partner to the a-side and completes the 12” as yet another slice of history is made by this legend.

With the success of our last releases getting props and plays from DJs as diverse as Erol Alkan, DJ T, Martyn, Deetron, & Rob Da Bank we are really excited to present our next slice of futuristic funk for your ears and booty from the extremely talented Joe. With his debut, the awesome ‘Grimelight’, being released on Hessle Audio, Joe is part of a loose group of likeminded and future-thinking producers & DJs that includes Hessle Audio’s Ramadanman, Ben UFO, & Pangaea, and Untold & James Blake. Whilst they all have very individual sounds, they share a vision of dubstep, uk funky, techno & house influenced beats that seem to defy genre.
The A-side ‘Untitled’ is a huge stepping wad of funk, bringing to mind 2-step, early Skream & Benga, even stripped down grime classics like Pulse X, but with a truly contemporary twist. This tune drops hard, and has been a secret weapon of Appleblim’s for some time now – he was pleasantly surprised to see ravers of all ages go mad to it! The flip sees Joe’s more experimental leanings come out on ‘Digest’, but he never forgets the groove and funk. With rolling percussion, steppy sub bass and shiny analogue synth stabs cutting through, it seems to us like a mixture of Mala from Digital Mystikz and Theo Parrish! High praise indeed…

HDB036 Bellion – Ill Blu HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
This is the debut release on Hyperdub for north London’s Ill Blu, one of Funky’s most celebrated and promising production duos, who since forming in 2008 have had a string of underground hits as well as recently putting remixes for the likes of Cheryl Cole and Hot Chip under their belts. On side A, ‘Bellion’ is a great example of Funky at it’s most effectively simple and maximalist. It’s memorable, clear, bell-like melody is reflected in the sub bass line and heavy mid range chords while the percussive drums add to the intensity making the whole track inescapably infectious. In contrast, B-side ‘Dragon Pop’s relentless lattice of congas, snares, deep bass drum and percussion seems minimal, but at the same time there is no space for melody within the tracks construction, it’s just that intense. The already big interest in Ill blu is set to reach far wider next week with the release of Kode9’s DJ Kicks album, on which they are included.

FRJ007 Frijsfo Beats Volume 2 – Various Frijsfo Beats 12″ Vinyl
Limited finished copies. ‘Frijsfo Beats Volume 2′ is the second various-artists EP from the eponymous label, marking a fruitful two years in existence. Promise was recognised from the start in the pages of The Wire magazine among other places. Since then, support for Frijsfo’s open-minded aesthetic has grown, with FACT magazine, Boomkat and DJs such as Ben UFO, Pangaea and Tomb Crew getting behind vinyl releases from Sully, Ed DMX, Point B and Kuoyah. The EP opens with a first for the label in a contribution from Geiom, responsible for the Berkane Sol label, as well as material for the likes of Skull Disco, Deep Medi and Planet Mu. Here he irresistibly reworks the lead track from Kuoyah’s recent EP, raising a sweat with a stepping drum track and eking out key changes to expertly tighten up the cinematic drift of the original. Sully is a regular on the roster – championed by everyone from Dusk + Blackdown to Sinden – and he appears on ‘Volume 2′ with ‘Saviour’. Originally distributed as a free download, here the track receives the properly mastered vinyl cut it deserves, maximising the effect of an intense bass exorcism in classic 2003 style. His unique talent for bewitching future 2-step beats is also in full effect, allied to trademark ricocheting samples and a glowing chord progression. Point B continues to unearth hidden connections between Drexciya’s militant funk and the rhythmic flex of 2-step garage. If his gift for rewiring disparate conventions seems to create knotty musical puzzles at first, as with his previous work for Frijsfo – not to mention diverse releases on Combat, SCSI-AV and Orson – it always makes complete sense by the end. Rising Nottingham-via-Bristol producer Sclist ties up a few threads with a remix of a cut from ‘Frijsfo Beats Volume 1′. His version of Lewis Hunter’s ‘Cut From the Wreckage’ was previously included on his digital EP for Frijsfo, which followed a stand-out release for Whistla’s L2S Recordings. Surgically enhanced breakbeats and trademark mechanised glitches take things into angular, suspensefully paced territory in suitably unique fashion.

Fast-forward 3.5 years and dubstep is the most exciting, youthful club music in the UK with Fabric:37 regarded as the CD that took dubstep from the underground and into the mainstream. It!s still the benchmark for all DJs in the scene to aspire to and where Caspa and Rusko were once unknowns; they are now two of the most influential DJs in the world, with Caspa’s bi-monthly Dub Police night at Fabric now the most successful night on the club’s roster. It’s success that was impossible to predict.

Caspa’s success was no fluke though, in fact you’d be hard pressed to find a harder-working person in the industry, having built up his ever-growing empire from scratch. In 2010 he is a man in demand, off the back of his debut artist album last year “Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening!” he has remixed the likes of Deadmau5, Depeche Mode, Mike Snow and most recently U.S superstar Ludacris. He’s helped bring through acts such as Emalkay, The Others, D1 and Subscape through his labels Dub Police and Subsoldiers and via his regular sell-out label roster club shows, most notably the pre-mentioned Fabric residency.

Caspa

His DJ schedule is still out of control with an average of 15-20  shows per month, booked up 6-months in advance and this summer the shows are only getting bigger. In June he’ll make his debut at Sonar festival… On the main stage… In between Dizzee Rascal and The Chemical Brothers – things have changed for the boy from Chiswick. And on to “My Style!”, the brand new mix series from Dub Police that once again plans to break the mould of what a dubstep mix can be with a number of acts already being lined up for future editions. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves; this is No.1 and who better to take the controls than the label head honcho Caspa. In the mix he takes us through the full spectrum of dubstep sound with dance floor slayers from the likes of Skream, Emalkay and Doctor P through to the more eclectic sounds of Joy Orbison, D1 and Joker. Of course there’s an untold amount of exclusives to boot, giving fans an early preview of some of the biggest records set to blow up in the summer months, with brand new material from the Dub Police / Subsoldiers camp.

From the 23 tracks selected we see Caspa couple upfront and unheard material with some of the scene’s biggest anthems of the last year with Emalkay’s “When I Look At You’, Joy Orbison’s now classic ‘Hyph Mngo’ and Caspa’s massive remix of Deadmau5 “I Remember” all featuring throughout the mix. A. Twilight – BMK is an up and coming producer who has had releases on many other labels and is set to be a rising star for 2010. Nekochan’s 2009 debut download-only release met with success in pushing dubstep into new zones, and now comes the first foray into vinyl, with the three-track killer ‘Minimal Bump’ EP, that will further reconfigure notions of what bass music can be. The title track has already been featured on Mary Anne Hobbs, who played an early version in may last year after hearing it on myspace. ‘Minimal Bump’ is a powerful techno/break/dubstep instrumental with a huge kick and seismic bass work, custom built for dancefloor mayhem, with its layered synths, advanced rythmic shifts, cavernous drops, and an explosive production style that recalls the intricacies of prime Meat Beat Manifesto at the same time as giving Reso a run for his money. On the flip, ‘Bombine’ is another view entirely; a emotive disjointed stepper with melancoly pop tones, which unfolds in a smokey torch-song style to reveal further layers to Nekochan’s innate musical instincts. MEDI024 Protecting Hands Remixes – Clouds Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl

Following on from the highly acclaimed original productions ‘Protecting Hands (Parts 1 and 2)’ released mid-2009 on DEEP MEDi Musik, Clouds have enlisted Berkane Sol’s label owner Geiom and experimental electronic minimalists Isan to dissect and rebuild. Kamal Joory AKA Geiom has been busy producing since the late 90’s pushing the downtempo and ambient sounds of IDM and merging them with his love of raw grime and garage instrumentals. In 2006 Geiom started the ever-reliable Berkane Sol imprint releasing his own work (most notable the stunning ‘Reminssin’ featuring Marita) but also giving Brackles and Shortstuff their first outing on wax. Geiom’s remix of ‘Protecting Hands’ sketches out a dreamy, beautiful half-step approach with his love of electronica clearly coming heavily in to play, complimenting the original ghostly vocal perfectly. One of his best productions we think? Isan have been making minimalistic electronics since the mid 90’s with killer releases on Morr Music and Static Craven. Clouds are clearly fans of their work and this comes across in their remix as they dissect the original and create a blissful, beatless journey, permitting the sound to develop organically, with their intuitive grasp of melody and their intelligent manipulation of sound dictating its direction.

IDJ mag review: Bristol resident Ghettozoid brings in fêted vocalist Yolanda to help launch her One 4 Ho imprint. Moody washes of midrange synth provide an ample background for Yolanda’s stunning vocal spiritual, clockwork garage breaks and thunderous bass thrum adding a dash of urgency to the mix. Crackle house specialist Blue Daisy turns in a sick remix on the flip, dubbing the track hard as he stretches the samples tautly across his canvas – ambient vocal excursions eventually joined by a burrowing acid bassline and Daisy’s trademark squeezed beats.

2009 has been a good year for Critical, having built yet further on its reputation as being one of the most forward-thinking underground drum and bass labels in the scene. Appearances from Spectrasoul, Sabre, Serum & Vapour paved the way for the heavily acclaimed Critical Sound compilation that saw label boss Kasra representing the ‘Future of D&B’ at Fabric’s 10th birthday and even guesting on BBC Radio 1. Now just in time for Christmas Critical serve up one last delicious 12” before the new year from the mighty Break. Smooth’s the word as ‘Late Drop’ gets under way with lazy-day pads and a light stepping break that runs through the DJ-friendly intro all the way to the breakdown. Wait for the typically gnarly Breakbass though and then it’s throttle down, away we go on this late night tech-roller that oozes class and sees Critical’s eyes set firmly on the dance floor once again. ‘Crunchy’ kicks off with some interesting orchestration and a simple stepping break that flowsunderneath jungle samples and a distant vocal. FFLP1-1 Optimus Prime – Chook Full Force Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. The Cocoon is the culmination of half a decade’s worth of hard work. Starting out in 2004, Chook launched Full Force Recordings as an output for the fierce and disturbing side of European techno influenced drum & bass. The label garnered support right from the off with DJs as diverse as Roni Size, J Majik and Calyx & Teebee all queuing up to work Full Force’s releases into their sets. Chook, alongside friends such as Germany’s Phace (Subtitles), New Zealand’s State of Mind (Shogun Audio) and USA’s Mayhem (Ram Records) put the label firmly on the map with tracks from some of the world’s finest breakbeat artists, keeping the music policy as credible, long-lasting D&B. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook delves deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Punch Drunk launches into 2010 with colourful cuts to beat the freeze in the form of two hot collaborations from Hyetal & Shortstuff. The hyper synth frenzy of Don’t Sleep and the technicolour visions of Ice Cream have been heavily rotated by Jackmaster, Brackles, Untold, Gemmy, Ben UFO, 2562, Oneman, Starkey amongst others.A flurry of releases in 2009 put Hyetal at the centre of a Bristol second wave of producers. Having caught the ear of Mary Anne Hobbs and subsequently appearing on her Planet Mu compilation ‘Wild Angels’, Hyetal has also seen releases for Bristollian labels Reduction and Soul Motive, and also for Texas based Formant Recordings. Releases on Planet Mu, Ramp Recordings, Berkane Sol and Pollen throughout 2009 have seen Shortstuff assert himself as a key mover in the new wave of grime, garage, funky and hip hop influenced beats and basslines infiltrating the UK underground. Shared roots in the forward thinking Nottingham Futureproof and Wigflex scenes, Shortstuff has recently launched his own imprint, Blunted Robots, alongside Brackles.

For its debut release, Dark Arx presents a 3-track single of gritty, emotive electronic music by Binary Sequence. Binary Sequence operates in the margins of UK dubstep channelling his influences through a painstaking process of deconstruction and distortion. The resulting tracks are gems of electronica, simultaneously beautiful and sonically fierce. Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).

JAKES, the founding member of the HENCH crew was an obvious target to carry out the Chainsaw remix, being a big fan of the original and regularly rinsing the track out in the raves, he’s given the track the signature Jakes sound, psychedelic bass-lines and heavyweight percussion, watch out for the sample too, see if you recognise it. UK born but now living in LA PROPATINGZ has his musical history in the Breaks scene, a long purveyor of the sound and a regular on the live scene he has more recently switched his style and has been directly influenced by 16bit’s sound. What’s to say about the phenomenal production talent of Mark Pritchard that has not already been said? Mark has been lovingly producing cutting edge music for some two decades now under numerous music guises and aliases such as Global Communications, Reload, Troubleman, Jedi Knights and most recently under his Harmonic 313 moniker for Warp Records. Along the way Mark has captured the attention of the most discerning industry heavyweights, be it DJ Jazzy Jeff extolling the virtues of his Harmonic 33 project, Kenny Dope raving about his Troubleman output, or tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs and Benji B eagerly anticipating the next email from Mr Pritchard bearing the fruits of his labour in the studio.

Dub Police comes with the goods again. This time its the turn of one of dubstep’s founding fathers D1, here to show them what its all about. ‘Jus Business’ has been finding its way into the sets of all the big hitters lately. With its dark rave stabs, tripping jungle beats and pounding sub bass its not hard to see why – serious business from D1.

Things couldn’t be more contrasting on the flip with the energetic party roller ‘Pitcher’. Skipping beats and a quirky lead line, with funky esq. melodies and soulful grooves – a really bouncing track. All in all another top draw release from Dub Police and a quality slab of vinyl from D1 showing us just how diverse this artist really is.

First up is Time is Now, kicking off with samples of dystopian android speech mixed up with a simple flute lick that gives no warning of the impending carnage! Snipped up breaks collide with whiplash-inducing bass action and shuddering subs to make a guaranteed mess of any dancefloor. Flipside, TRG gets more reflective with They Know, as wistful chords drift across the intro like echoes of some long-forgotten rave, before dropping into a post-UKG boom-bass workout. Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. INMD005 Battlecat / Grapefruit – Donnie Dubson Influenza Media 12″ Vinyl
Germany has seen the evolution of many successful labels and artists over time, including (The) Panacea, Current Value, Twintone and Blu Saphir Recordings. But more recently, Digital Colours and Fokuz LTD artist, Donnie Dubson has stepped into the fray, joining the roster of immaculate talent on one of Belgium’s most well-known chill-out labels, Influenza Media. Coming a long way from his first release on Have-A-Break Recordings in 2006, Donnie’s masterful production has landed him spots on compilations and podcasts by the likes of Phunkfiction Recordings, Hospital Records and Knowledge Magazine, while collaborating with such artists as Stunna and Andy Sim. The fifth instalment on Influenza Media features two very different but “feel good” pieces. Battlecat is lush with its’ subtle, warm bass lines, while Grapefruit pummels forward with its’ bass-heavy kicks and sweeping pad melodies. If I were to speak to Donnie myself, I’d be the first to comment on his magnificent arrangement of the breakdown on both tunes. The halftime break in Grapefruit is very welcoming, and it really does a great job working its’ way towards the dance floor for the second drop. Battlecat uses a more traditional technique, using bass stabs to push the second drop into full throttle.

FOURWARD is one of the hottest and most sought after new producer collective around at the moment. Their first digital releases on Subsonik Sound were all regulars at Beatport Top 10 sales chart for weeks, competing with established artists´ tracks by Chase&Status and Noisia. BODY&SOUL and FOURWARD decided to join forces just recently and the feedback on their work so far couldn’t prove any more, that this was an excellent decision. DP034 When I Look At You – Emalkay Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police drop an absolute peach of a single here from Birmingham’s ever rising star Emalkay. This side see’s the massive ‘When I Look At You’ get a release, and with support from Caspa, Benga, Skream, N-Type & just about anyone who is anyone battering the living daylights out of this tune its not hard to see why this has now got to the anthem status it so thoroughly deserves. A real epic intro with luscious pads and pitched vocals, before an absolutely ferocious drop of squelching bass and stomping beats. So big, its criminal! The flip couldn’t be any more different, but don’t let that put you off. ‘Angie Got Stoned’ is sheer genius with its quirky piano lead, skippy beats, sweet vocals and warm bass. In all honesty words cannot really give this track any justice, just listen to it yourself and enjoy this masterpiece that Emalkay has unleashed on to the world. An absolutely essential release for any dubstep fan!

Finish copy. We don’t really do remixes, but with the original ‘Sick As Sin’ smacking it, this rework smacks it even more. Carefully staying true to the original and not interfering with its initial blast, this version tweaks it just enough to bring you back to that point when this tune first dropped and you couldn’t play it enough. On the flip-side you have 2 utterly brand new bangers that each provide prime time ammunition in their own right. Face gets Splat embodies trademark Stagga production with the lyrical talents of Y Dot Tzer J Bone getting into a metaphorical battle with other MCs. While Tha Criss Gurge Supply pitches down a little and gives itself a haunting swagger all of it’s own. Stagga has an extensive background producing hip-hop through his involvement with Optimas Prime and off kilter act Dead Residents. ATM001 Mako EP – Ital Tek Atom River 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Ital Tek (Alan Myson) is back with his second release of 2009: Mako EP, proving again that he is carving his own sound within the spectrum of bass music. His busy international touring schedule and releases on the infamous Planet Mu label have cemented his reputation as one of the most inventive producers working under the Dubstep banner today. Following on from 2008’s acclaimed album Cyclical and 2009’s Massive Error this is the debut release for his own imprint Atom River. Over 4 tracks it sees Ital Tek once again perfectly bridging the gap between Dubstep, Techno and Electronica whilst retaining strong dance floor energy. Mako opens the record with one of Ital Tek’s warmest and thickest sounding tunes to date. Driving fuzz bass and a searing twisted lead push the track onwards over a bed of glorious chord progressions. Chemical Temple stomps in with a lurching half step rhythm and thick cutting synth lines before breaking down in a pulsating double time bass driven mesh of tight flickering percussion and distant ghostly melodies breaking through into the foreground. Manhattan sets things off with a bang on the B side. Sharp cold metallic breaks drop into a heavy driving bass throb. The drums cut through the track with shattering precision allowing the bass to whip out the solid rhythm, whilst again complimenting Ital Tek’s knack for melody. Topaz closes the record with a hard hitting Techno – Dubstep crossover. Pounding kicks and crisp percussion swell over the course of 5 minutes into a crescendo of swirling synths before dropping finally into an epic rinse out. This record once again shows Ital Tek’s ability to bring both heaviness and beauty to music that is as equally suited in a club as it is sound tracking a late night drive.

Grimy and growling, this is a tune that’s going to tear your immune system to shreds.

AMIRAH – Flip over for another dark, deep, no-nonsense number with ‘Amirah’; with ominous atmospherics, a stabbing drumbeat, and oriental female vox, ‘Amirah’ has plenty of spice and a feisty kick! A helicopter chopper sound fades in and out of consciousness and adds to the mayhem. Powerful and intense, with pummelling subs, heavy bassline and a thumping drum kick, ‘Amirah’ is a tune that takes no prisoners!

Honking trumpets? Breasty ragga vocals and slick double-bass twangin’? A Prince Buster tune, cussing and some snooker balls? Well my good man, this can only be the next release from Blunt Force Trauma! This double dose of ska-lounge-cum-ragga-get-down is a most handsome successor to BFT’s first release. Lord Cry Cry aka Berlin- based Chris Donaghue pours every inch of his classically-trained ear for detail into this lovingly produced re-working of One Step Beyond, twinned with the rude Raw F*ck. Sweet-talking your backslide into a strange grooving action, this pair of beauties has slapped a large and toothsome grin in the face of every listener, including the likes of DJ Food, Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts) and Jon Kennedy. Artwork here is obsessively overseen by BFT with a cover shot by New York’s Anthony Saint James (www.anthonysaintjames.com – worth a visit for the celeb-spotting!) and a tattoo by British illustrator Inkymole, on a sleeve which opens into an 11″x16″ poster. Add blue dinked vinyl with a red 45rpm adapter by sister company Factoryroad, a download card with 7 tracks including ‘Make my P-Funk The Funk’ (a track exclusive to this format) along with Mac/PC and iPhone wallpapers and, well, you DO have a fulsome package there, sir. About Lord Cry Cry: After working in a steel mill and disregarding encouragement to become a Woolworths manager Lord Cry Cry, born Chris Donaghue, studied Law at Oxford University then Clinical Psychology. He worked as a psychologist in Kent then moved to Berlin to write a novel, join a band, build a snowman, schlep coal, and collect bottles. Just because he could. He completed a Masters degree in sound design and classical music composition in Berlin this year. This is his first solo vinyl release, after providing many a musical piece for various short European films.

BOKBOK01 I Want You (Bok Bok VIP Dub) – Dre Skull Unknown 12″ Vinyl
White Label, Black sleeve. One of the most exciting record on these pages this week comes from London’s Bok Bok, offering up two refixes of Crazy Cousins ‘Bongo Jam’ and Dre Skull’s ‘I Want You’. The cliche “One to watch” was made for this fella, from his potent mixtapes mashing grime, house, garage and UK Bass, to his forthcoming tracks for Dress 2 $weat, Bok Bok is dangerously onto something. On the A-side we’ve got a refit of Dre Skull’s club anthem ‘I Want You’, engaging with elements of tougher NYC and Chicago house and locked into heavyweight UKF bass with a proper bashment fired flavour. On the flipside he rewires Crazy Cousins’ infectious ‘Bongo Jam’ with a superbly tempered blend of dirty chromed synth timbres and cool rushing snare rolls executed with a knowing restraint, built to tease the dancefloor.
