FIS is a Wellington local who was a regular customer at the now closed Samurai Store (record store). Inspired by the new music he was purchasing at the time, FIS went hard to work at designing his own unique sound. The results were instantly quality, and a CD handed to label boss Presha began his story. With dBridge and Consequence major fans and an Exit Records release on the horizon, Tokyo Prose sat down with FIS to work on creating a fusion of their 2 styles. ‘The Dares’ was the first off the mark, instantly becoming a playlist favourite with the Exit records family, and more recently, ‘The Truths’ has completed the 10″ in the same grinding, surging roll ‘The Dares’ started with. Depth and subtle complexity with menacing atmos, this is future music. DJ support from dBridge, Loxy, ASC, Consequence, Presha and lots more once they get the tunes. sed Samurai Store (record store). NARRATIVES001 – Blocks & Escher – Sagan / Broken – 12″ Vinyl
Blocks and Escher have over the space of 2 years grown from being acclaimed newcomers and solo artists to establishing themselves as one of Drum and Bass’ most exciting and sought after production outfits. Their debut releases in 2009 found their way into the record bags of scene luminaries such as Fabio, Marcus Intalex, DJ Hype, Spectrasoul, and Alix Perez- as well as gaining attention outside of the genre for their emotive and progressive take on Drum and Bass with support from artists as varied as Rob Da Bank, Jazzanova, Mary Ann Hobbs and Laurent Garnier. Coming bang up to date, 2011 saw their music grace some of the biggest and most prestigious labels in bass music with releases dropping on Renegade Hardware, Horizons Music and arguably one of the most highly awaited singles of the year “Shadowplay” on Shy Fx’s huge Digital Soundboy imprint. Entering in to 2012, Blocks and Escher present their own label, Narratives Music. Formed primarily as an outlet for their own work alongside collaborations and remixes; the emphasis is on releasing music which encapsulates the atmosphere, emotion and excitement that made them fall in love with the genre in the 1990’s. The Narratives name itself, is derived from the imagery and stories felt and gathered from music; the way that a listener may cast their own interpretation and build their own subjective narrative. The three tracks on the debut release demand to be listened to in their entirety. Three journeys together, inscribing a balanced impression of the Narratives ‘sound’. New D&B Promos

CODED006 – Chroma (Phobia, Sato & Tyrone) – Falling Down (Ft LKP) / Fathom – 12″ Vinyl
Formed at the start of 2011 by D&B kingpins of the UK’s north-east Phobia, Sato and Tyrone, Chroma are looking forward to big things indeed in 2012. Already with their first studio excursions very well received by the likes of DJ Hype, Jubei, Kasra, Flight and more it’s not surprising that the likes of Renegade Hardware and Frequency have been snapping at their heels for some Chroma exclusives. For now though the boys drop their new piece of dance floor skullduggery on Phobia’s Coded imprint to kick off the new year. ‘Falling Down’ intros with smooth pads and a delicate arpeggiated synth that paves the way for the oncoming melancholy vocal from LKP who delivers his refreshing flow with consummate ease. The mood is then simply shattered into a million pieces as the drop brings the ruckus with smashing breaks edited to perfection over huge booming sub-bass that pulls us deep inside a very rough ride indeed. Moving onto the flip and Chroma switch things around opting for a snapping two-step break that rolls its way down throughout ‘Fathom’ for a much for subtle slice of dance floor D&B. DJ support from DJ Hype, Jubei, Flight, Kasra, Craggz & Parallel, Foreign Concept and more.

New Bass Music CD

MEDICD007 – Goth-Trad – New Epoch (CD Format) – CD
New Epoch is by far and away Goth-Trad’s most complete piece of work to date, showcasing what he is has learnt in his years of producing, touring, playing live and remixing. The album features eleven superbly and delicately crafted tracks. From the opener Man In the Maze full of beautifully dark, emotional strings and pulsating, mesmerizing groove to the intense synthesizer stabs and pure dance-floor mayhem of the Mirage – one of the strongest tracks that has been firing in heavy rotations from Mala and Kode9 – to the title track New Epoch which defines a producer digging through different styles, experiences and cultures to find himself now one of the most unique artists within the scene and beyond. “To be honest with you I’m not listening to Dubstep that much, the whole reason I got into making Dubstep is because it’s free. You can do anything with it. Take it all sorts of directions…. I’m always looking for more directions and styles within my work, but I’m not really thinking I’m doing Dubstep. I’m just doing my sound. I’ve been doing this style of music for almost ten years and I just say all this music is bass music. I’m putting a lot of variety into the new album. Some tunes are very techie, some tunes are much more experimental, a bit glitchy. There may be some more banging stuff. I’ve lots of ideas to keep moving with.” New Epoch indeed!

CONVEX001 – Jon Convex – Bump and Grind / Closer – 10″ Vinyl
Jon Convex kicks off his exciting new Convex Industries imprint with two of his own solo productions ‘Bump and Grind’ & ’Closer’. As one half of Instra:mental there’s no surprise with the sonic qualities of these tracks, an amalgamation of raw electronica/techno and bass music, or as he likes to call it, EPM (Electronic Party Music). Both tracks feature Convex’s trademark pitched vocals, thumping kicks, rounded basslines and twisted glitch edits fit for any dancefloor, a must for any DJ that wants to get a crowd moving.

LMDSW001 – Nocturnal Sunshine – Can’t Hide The Way I Feel – 12″ Vinyl
Very limited vinyl repress! Nocturnal Sunshine is the new alias for Maya Jane Coles. She’s one half of  vocal duo She Is Danger and an emerging tech house superstar under her own name. This release, is all about the A side “Can’t Hide the Way I Feel,” the writhing monster that both fetishes extreme pain and bottles it up in an unbearably spiralling arpeggio that grows and shrinks without ever revealing an opening. “Broke” drops with a driving beat suitable for peaktime but atmospherics ripe for opening sets or gently winding down. Nocturnal Sunshine is worth making an exception for.” Can’t Hide the Way I Feel” was in Scuba’s excellent RA Podcast.
DJ support from: Hatcha, Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs, Joy Orbison, Pearson Sound,  Appleblim, Brendon Moeller, Kowton, Cosmin TRG & George Fitzgerald.

GHM002 – Zoltan – Pluton EP – 12″ Vinyl
So in October last year Granholme finally became a reality with the release of Graphic’s Wiping The Eye EP. As the first release on a label no one had heard of it was both humbling (people were actually willing to listen) and reassuring (after being obsessed with the tracks from early on) to see the support from a bunch of people. A large and sincere thank you for that. You might have spotted the shift in sound of the last track, a well received remix by Zoltan that was later given away on XLR8R.com (& is now on our soundcloud page). We’re finally ready to release GHM-002, a 3 track Zoltan EP with Graphics returning the favour with an extra promo only remix. It’s a change in tone from our first release flying it’s floor filling ambitions with pride, and for that we are thankful. ’Pluton’ opens the EP with a relentless crack and percussive chatter quickly joined by diva glitches and gyroscope bass stirring, before said low end rotations and hi hats resolve themselves into motorik syncopation, periodically cooling down before bursting back into life. Flipside ‘When I’m’ further ups the raver uniting stakes with crunching ST-esque kicks & snares and chiming vocals building into plunging breakdowns, all sucked down by a heaving space where the low end should be. Digi-only track ‘You Don’t’ brings the EP to a close with a further refinement of ‘Pluton’s helicopter bass, adding hammering acid flecked psychosis to the party. There’s also a vaguely recognizable vocal buried in there that might have kept the track from vinyl inclusion, but we wouldn’t know about that. Finally there’s Graphics aforementioned rework of ‘When I’m', due to be released as a free promo download in the coming month. More in tune with the post-rave dawn crawl home, Graphics slashes the tempo while the vocal is twisted into an unintelligible taunt and isolated kicks & stomach cramp synths coalesce into a uniquely dead eyed shuffle. Confirmed DJ & Radio support so far from; Jackmaster (Numbers / Rinse), Scratcha (HyperDub / Rinse), Roska (Rinse), Shox (Rinse), xxxy (Orca/TenThousandYen), Presk (Ten Thousand Yen / AudioCulture – used ‘When I’m’ on his Fact mix just before Xmas).

PER001 – Scuba – The Hope – 12″ Vinyl
On the 27th February, Scuba will release his third album through Hotflush. Entitled ‘Personality’ and featuring 11 brand new tracks, it takes in a wealth of genres across contemporary dance music, proving once again Scuba’s place at the cutting edge of the electronic music scene. Preceding his LP will be this single ‘The Hope’; pushing on from the tense atmospherics of previous Scuba material, the single fizzes with claustrophobic bass pressure and menacing narration. Backed by an exclusive non-album cut ‘Flash Addict’.

DEEPD004 – Kromestar – Boookey / Alone – 12″ Vinyl
Dubstep For Deep Heads are proud to present a stunning new record from one of Dubstep’s biggest names, Kromestar! 2 tracks that are just mind blowing! “Boookey” on the A side has Kromestar’s beats flying all over the place with basslines and futuristic samples neatly slotted in between. Then “Alone” on the flip takes it low. Dark and gritty and seriously weighty!

ENTD001 – Genetix – Falling Down (feat Persist) – 12″ Vinyl
Genetix are back! “Falling Down” that features Persist is an instant anthem! Heavy Electro synths lace the intro of this amazing track with a catchy vocal to match. Just wait for the drop though, in your face, well rounded basslines sit on top of some beefy, engineered to perfection beats that will rip apart your subs. Then “Attic” sees Genetix go a little deeper than usual, but really like the direction of this well executed production. Last up is “Rock Solid”. As you might of guessed from the name, this track has a heavy rock influence with distorted guitar riffs making up this quality track.

New D&B Releases

EXITLP009 – Loxy & Resound – Burning Shadows – 12″ Vinyl x 3
London’s Loxy and Finland’s Resound have always been known for their ragga-tinged, hardhitting sound, where each beat slams through with an untouchable technical precision. The two producers have been combining forces for the last three years – including their 2009 anthem ‘Green Destiny / Storyboard’ (Digital Soundboy), remixes for Kryptic Minds, additions to Renegade Hardware compilations, last year’s ‘No Money – Deadly Venom/Driving Force’ (Def Recordings), and their contribution to Exit Records’ ‘Mosaic: Volume One’ (‘Vertigo’) earlier this year. But the duo’s long-awaited debut long player marks their first collaboration that has absolutely no boundaries: as experimental and creative as it gets. True to form, as most Exit Records releases go, ‘Burning Shadows’ sees both producers finding their stride, and treading into surprising new sonic territories from a few different directions. Taking the energy and force of early tech-heavy Drum & Bass, Loxy & Resound bring the genre into a sound that’s uniquely their own.

New D&B Promos

REDSEAL014 – ASC – Droids / Never Enough – 12″ Vinyl
Limited coloured vinyl: Solid blue, crystal clear & white mixed. Mutant cyber funk from the man behind Auxilliary, Symbol and one of the albums that has come to signify the Autonomic sound. ‘Droids’ follows ‘Brainscan’ perfectly. A muted power break jabs its way to the drop where it is joined by a writhing bassline, snippets of a classic break and signifying bleeps that mark this as the closest Drum and Bass can get to techno without a 4/4. The layers great techno music is known for are also taken care of here, with the power of every element wrung out to its true potential. ‘Never Enough’ is a drum workout of the highest order, with filters wrapping themselves around the twisting break edits, claps and steadying bassline. Vinyl buyers get an exclusive ambient piece …sshhhhhhh. DJ Support from dBridge, Loxy, Consequence, Synkro, Indigo, Presha and many more.

HORO002 – ASC – No Secrets / Zenith – 10″ Vinyl
Samurai vinyl only ‘Horo’ series Volume 2. Limited Multi Coloured vinyl 10″ – After the success of the last 2 ASC singles for Samurai Red Seal and the flood of quality music that was arriving in our inboxes from the man, it was inevitable it was time for another shot of this UK Born, California residents vision. The ‘Horo’ vinyl series appealed to ASC instantly being a man from a strong techno background and an avid vinyl collector himself. ‘No Secrets’ is one of those tunes that touches you deeply without you realising, echoing in your subconscious and drawing you back for repeat listens. ‘Zenith’ picks up where ‘Bleep Test’ left off, stuttering timeless breaks patched together with diving bass and percussive polishes to produce a unique sound that takes the past and hurls it into the future.

MODULE010 – June Miller – Snapcase – 10″ Vinyl
More primetime, hi-grade drum & bass from the ever on point Critical collective. Label boss Kasra uses his sixth sense once more to uncover these two gems for his Modulations imprint from Holland’s Bart van Dijk and Mark McCann aka June Miller. Once again standards are high, no room for error when Critical’s nearby! A rocksteady two-step break leads the way into ‘Snapcase’, one of the coolest slices of future flexing D&B yet seen on Modulations. It’s all about the drop into dry, tech-step territory that you can be sure smashes any dance floor with ease while the syncopated bass hook grabs and never lets go. File alongside Break and Phace. ‘Walls Of Jericho’ as the name suggests opens with an ominous cinematic soundscape of dark horns and panning percussion before some serious bass surges and panic-laden snares build to a killer climax. Huge off-kilter breaks and ingenious edits then carry it away into possibly the heaviest track yet to have seen a release on Modulations. A great way to kick off 2012.

2NDRP12016 – Gerry Read / 23Hz & Numaestro – Roomland (Distal Remix) / Zumo (Sully Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Sometime you can’t keep a good remix down, and we certainly felt that with these two beastly versions by two very exciting producers of bass music. First up is an exciting producer 2nd Drop have been talkin to for over a year now, Atlanta’s Distal has been making a lot of noise across the bass scene with releases on Tectonic and ? Alongside putting a vast array of music on his own Embassy Label. Inspired by Gerry’s original, Distal has produced something truly brilliant. In stark contrast to the sublime Youandewan remix and Gerry Read’s killer original, Distal grabs the key elements and transforms them into an awesome juke workout. Drawing on an arsenal of stunning original features, this hyperkinetic version is bursting with character, energy and colour. On the flip, we welcome back Sully, who first saw wax on 2nd Drop with the anthemic Give Me Up in mid 2008. As a big fan of 23hz & Numaestro’s original, Sully asked to remix Zumo soon after it’s release in early 2009. Failed hardrives and a quiet 2010 for the label sadly meant this remix with its shifting syncopated beat patterns and moody El-B-esque swing, was sat on. Until now. Beautifully placed to carry on the Sully sound after his critically acclaimed album on Keysound in September, this long overdue remix now gets the release it deserves. Coincidently, the artist on both of the original releases was our mysterious Portugese illustrator and graffiti activist Uiu. So in the spirit of the release we asked him to remix both the original illustrations to create a new version for this release. The featured art ensued. Slightly bonkers, but amazing!

KNOWING LOOKS kicked off 2011 for WNCL Recordings with with his much loved, hard stepping ABANDONED SKIP, backed with the acclaimed symphonic masterpiece that was LAST KISS AT THE PLAINS HOTEL. Jason Hopfner is back again to neatly tie up a busy year at WNCL HQ, unveilling the classically constructed epic LISTEN TO MY 45 – described by BEN UFO as “lovely. gorgeous. slick. buff etc” …and who are we to disagree. Just do what it says on the tin, then flip over for GHOST BABY – yet another fine example from Hopfner’s rich and varied production cannon, melding super cool minimalism with party breaks. This one tears down the dance in the best way possible. Dark, but energetic, a staple in N-Type set. Time’s up: Similar darkness but more steppy. This one hits you hard with tearing hoovers, powerful lfo’s and all the atmosphere from a 90′s warehouse rave, in a 2011 style. Supported by N-Type, Hatcha, Walsh, Youngsta and Benton

DB063 – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – 12″ Vinyl
I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. So peace to Dj Cra$y wherever you are and respect to BrEaCh for putting these together. best, VonStroke.

HFT020 – Locked Groove – Rooted EP – 12″ Vinyl
Hotflush presents the debut 12″ from Belgian newcomer Locked Groove aka Tim Van de Meutter. The young producer delivers three hypnotizing and genre bending tracks that expertly weave the sounds of Berghain, soulful house and UK garage into a single crushing package. The “Rooted” EP draws you in with the title track, bouncing along to an acid baseline, then moves onto “Drowning”, a moody techno track that was included on Scuba’s DJ-Kicks mix compilation, filled with drum and ambient samples taken from field recordings. Lastly, “Change”, a production that smartly melds classic house grooves with industrial techno, demonstrates Locked Groove’s rhythmic finesse and long-term promise as an artist.

PNTS002 – Magnum – All Over Me EP – 12″ Vinyl
After the widespread success of PNTS001 (Visionistʼs ʻMr. 67ʼ), the South London based imprint returns with another hard hitter in Magnumʼs ʻAll Over Me E.P.ʼ Fresh from recent moves on Nightshifters, Gradient Audio, Soukouch Ethnik and Inhale including a remix of Canblaster, the Puerto Rican producer has quickly built up much notoriety in his home country and is beginning to develop a following in the UK with numerous plays from Rinse FMʼs Scratcha DVA and Randomer. The title track of this latest excursion is as much a robust 808/909 dance floor mover as it is an all out, arms in the air, hairs on the back of your neck serotonin overload. Its winding arpeggiated synths, lush pads, and tear-jerking vocals show Magnum to be an artist of meticulous attention to detail. On the b-side, ʻDenseʼ is a straight up banger. Crafty bass deployment, rustic synth chords and informed jungle referencing all contribute to what has got to be one of the hardest hitting tracks this winter. Also on the b is the French Fries remix of ʻDenseʼ. As we all know anything the Parisian touches turns to gold and this is no exception. Taking Magnumʼs original concept and stripping it back he adds a touch of grime into the melting pot, à la Slimzee sets circa 2001, and deals with the low end as only one of the finest bass operators would.

SIL010 – The Phantom – EP2 – 12″ Vinyl
After almost 2 years of serving slices of their idea on cutting edge house music on a solely digital basis, the belgian Silverback Recordings now releases its first vinyl…  On “EP 2″ polish producer The Phantom demonstrates he’s a master at creating a soulful, genre-bending, futuristic blend, whilst paying homage to rich Chicago, UK garage, and Detroit traditions, to name but a few. On the A-side “Ceremony” starts off on a smooth hip hop flavored tip, before brilliantly building bridges to piano driven house. “Gothic” holds tight to hybrid thoughts with its melodically mutant, starry-eyed take on grime. The B-side sees an ever-escalating “Voyeur” balancing a fine line between languid safe havens and the abyss of syncopated chaos. The Phantom affirms he’s in control though, as he steps back a few paces on “Colossus”, and serves funked up, eighties evoking, electronic jams as a discursive ender to this trippy four-tracker. Highly acclaimed and limited to 300 12″ copies.  Support by Ikonika, Hackman, Canblaster, French Fries, Teki Latex, Round Table Knights, Dubbel Dutch, Brenmar, Lol Boys, Blackwax, Optimum, Chaos in the CBD, Lil Silva, Martelo,…

SUBS007 Logic Gate – Machine Code Subsistenz 12″ Vinyl
Subsistenz is back once again with another 1st for the dnb scene, bringing two peak-time floor peddlers from the freshest collaboration to come out of the subdivision camp – Machine Code aka Current Value & Dean Rodell – Neither of these two producers need introductions to any of the scenes they are planning to manipulate as these two heavy weights of the underground have been outputting quality release after release for over 20 years between them. Now after a few months of working the machines at the Subdivision Studio in Berlin, the stock piled arsenal is ready to be broadcast and inflicted upon the minions. The Machine Code project formed out of a true respect and passion for Techno-orientated dance music and has been personified in this bar-raising first broadcast – Logic Gate … A. Logic Gate is kick-started with Mechanisms, a full-on techno assault that builds from a spine-chilling, vocal-fused pad that is gradually manipulated around a rhythm that pounds the living life out of its tonal timbres. The subtle manipulations in sound are brought to a head when the mechanisms turn to a 4/4-driven bass stomp, giving all insundry a life line to clasp onto … B. Thermal Stress doesn’t let up in Logic Gates mission to remove charred brain cells from its listeners’ dusty caverns. A brutal attack
of constant clinical pressure builds and binds sound scapes to a point of pure audio hedonism. With no remorse for the cranked and perverted – Machine Codes infiltrating has begun – - – Lock Up Your Synths !!!

New D ‘n’ B PROMOS

NZ010 Stone Cold Killa – Soul Intent Samurai Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Samurai Music celebrates it’s 10th release by taking apart the dancefloor with 2 surefire aural bombs from Nottinghams’ Soul Intent. ‘Stone Cold Killa’ grinds in with cavernous heavy breakbeats, while the tone of impending carnage is set with ice cold ambience. A brief pause for the “..you’re a Stone Cold Killer” vocal before the hideously twisted bass riff unwinds itself into a drop that has been known to evacuate glassware from surrounding surfaces in clubs with systems capable of facilitating this tunes full power. The ultimate opening tune we suggest you save this piece of dangerous weaponry for situations that call for the heaviest artillery possible. ‘Conflict’ recalls golden moments in the tech step era with militant stepping breaks and a savagely warped bassline that bounces around with gleeful menace. It’s blatantly obvious that Mr Soul Intent was on a serious mission of hurting dancefloors in the days these two bass heavy monsters were created. We are proud to celebrate our 10th release by sharing their might with the rest of the planet. DJ’s that saw the need to draw for true power have been people like Klute, State Of Mind, Bailey, Eveson, Randall, Kasra, Cern, Phobia, Bulletproof and many more besides…

NONPLUS002 Watching You – Instra:mental Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Instra:mental present the second release from their Nonplus imprint after the hugely successful Nonplus 001 ‘Wonder Where’ / ‘No Future’. This release consists of two tracks from Instra:mental. Again, the A side contains the vocal talent of frequent collaborator dBridge, and for the B side they switch up the style into what can only be described as Dub Techno. a) Instra:mental ‘Watching You’ stands up to the quality levels set by Nonplus 001 and continues the fusion of original vocals, Detroit influenced chords and their trademark tight percussion. Ice-cold robotic vocals and heart-warming chord stabs will make the hairs on your neck stand on end listen after listen. This tune is a timeless piece of music that no amount of jargon can justifiably explain. If you like the recent output from these guys then you will love this tune. aa) Instra:mental ‘Tramma’ is a 4/4 offering made of elements from Dub, Techno and DnB but is hard to pigeonhole into any particular genre. For descriptive purposes well call it dub techno. Once again we can hear their influences from all things electronic, and here we have an example of the variance that we expect from Nonplus and a glimpse of the vision that Instra:mental have for the future of this label.

EXIT016 Melodies feat Mike Knight – Spectrasoul Exit Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Spectrasoul provide their debut single on Exit Records, which consists of two tracks written especially for the label. These two producers have proved their talent time and time again with a string of releases over the past two years and are definitely ones to watch in 2009/10. ‘Melodies’ is a clever combination of melancholic synth samples, used courtesy of legendary minimal electronica producers Isan, featuring the vocal talents of up and coming American RnB singer Mike Knight. An unconventional beat pattern makes this track stand out from the crowd and provides a refreshing break on the dancefloor. ‘Insignia’ comes with similar vibes on the B side, starting off with emotive pads and vocal snippets, dropping with low down sub stabs over another unconventional but highly effective beat. Both tracks have had support on the highly acclaimed autonomic podcasts (www.clubautonomic.com) and are receiving heavy rotation from DJs such as dBridge, Instramental and Dubstep pioneer DJ Skream, which highlights the versatility of these tracks and the potential to cross into Dj sets from different genres.

SUBTLE003EP Some Shit Saaink – Macc & dgoHn Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy. Time to enter the insane, weird, drum-centric world of Macc & dgoHn as the Subtle Audio camp proudly delivers its first artist-album by this pair of not altogether insane East Londoners.Subtle Audio has been pushing Drum & Bass with a slighly different slant for over four years now and this album could well be presented as their mission statement, it sums up the distinctive sound of the label perfectly. Macc & dgoHn favour a breakbeat driven style and they incorporate their beats into ever shifting cinematic arrangements brim full of attitude and experimentation. Individually, their sounds have travelled far beyond the Drum & Bass microcosm and their works have been aired by the likes of Zane Lowe and Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1. Aphex Twin is also an admirer and his festival playlists have contained Macc or dgoHn on more than one occasion. Now they unleash a volley of material from their collaborative archive which is set to disarm critics who thought Drum & Bass had run out of rhythms, arrangements and silly album titles. No fear on that, “Some Shit Saaink” is here!

New Dubstep CD

RAMP022CD One Foot Ahead Of The Other – Zomby Ramp Recordings CD
Once upon a time, there was a band called The Cure, who had a front man named Robert Smith. Robert was an emotional being, who was always looking to test his boundaries and search out new experiences. After touring the Germany in the early 80’s with his band of eyeliner encrusted over-emotional Goth-men, Robert began a non-sexual but intensely intimate relationship with Florian Schneider, front man of Electro forefathers, Kraftwerk. The unlikely couple decided to experiment with the then new science of gene splicing. After a few horrific failed attempts, they finally managed to successfully cross their DNA into the vessel of a baby boy. Months past, and it became disturbingly apparent that they two men, who at the time were at the peaks of their careers, had created a being of pure evil. They decided to enlist the help of the 4’2 purple sex-pest Prince to drown the young baby in a sea of colours and tears, and try as hard as they can to move on with their lives alone, ever trying to forget the horrific experiences the child had graced upon their lives. For many years, the baby’s soul circled the earth, crying pixels and watching women get undressed in locker rooms and stuff, for he is just a soul, and invisible to the human eye, and can get away with that kind of thing. The child found out there was a way to come back from the dead in some kind of Hellraiser type puzzle themed ritual, and hark, the boy (who was now a man) did indeed rise from the dead, and yes, he did once again walk the earth with the sole intent of wrong-doing. That boy is Zomby, and this is his new CD.

New Dubstep Releases

MEDI015 Dark Path – Goth Trad Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Sickness from Goth-Trad on Mala’s label, with perhaps his best twelve to date. ‘Dark Path’ on the A is an exercise in dub technology, thick slabs of bass overlaid with eastern melodies and mad FX. Percussion and snares are treated with heavy delays, pinging around like auditory hallucinations, building a framework upon which to hang the wistful chords and gentle flute topline. The flip is just as involving, stabbing wind samples and off-kilter hats readying you for sub undulations, runnin beats and mental bendy midrange noises. (Words C/O diccon IDJ Mag Issue 116)

ARGLP02_2 The Incredible Adventures Of Kenzolika & Quetzalcoatl Among The Air Castles Part2 – Blasta Argon Records 12″ Vinyl
Blasta met Kenzolika, Kyiv’s dubstep princess, in November 2008. It all started with a coincidence – the owls were falling, and they keep falling now. Blasta is a musician based in Vaska, St. Petersburg, Russia. Each tune on the album is filled with pure sweet emotions. Feel the tension in “Your Dub Delay”, a poignant cosmic dubstep anthem with vocals by Blasta. It doesn’t matter if you are drinking the “Black Muscatel” wine, drifting through the clouds inside a “Zeppelin Nacelle”, or just chilling and dancing slowly with beautiful girls inside the “Cosmic Lounge”. “This LP is something that has popped up from nowhere and is to be one of the best dance album’s I’ve heard in years, tracks like ‘Cosmic Lounge’ & ‘Black Muscatel’ are strong power plays from myself in the clubs and have had people singing with joy to the melodies or clenching their hearts with emotion – sumthing you don’t see in the clubs these days anymore due to the lack of good music played by the top DJs. Other tempo’s on the album shows the talent that Blasta really has with music making…….This album WILL be remembered for years to come!!!!!!” – Heny G
“The tunes are just snapshots of your feelings.” – Quest
“This is as deep & sexy as it gets. Blasta delivers one of the most beautiful dubstep albums ever made.” – L-Wiz
“This album is immense, breaking down boundaries in dubstep… pure vibes” – J:Kenzo
“Sophisticated dubstep music providing food for your soul! Pure jazzed out boogie! Blasta is sick!” – Distinction
“Blasta reconcilie le dubstep et la soul music. Un retour aux sources efficace!” – Von D
Blasta gives birth to a brand new sound, true future music. Music that is cooked from the most delicious rave, dub and jazz flavors ever created. This album gives you a complete feeling of tenderness and love, taken from the winter and fitting perfectly into the early spring.

IME012 Hades – Gatekeeper Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Immerse cuts a unique groove these days, releasing original, leftfield music, often dark and uplifting simultaneously. This new Gatekeeper plate falls on the darker side of the fence, but that’s no bad thing. ‘Hades’ is a moody skulker – triangles, pads and trickling sound FX giving way to a thumping bass’n’drum workout, dotted with delayed beeps and cutup shouted warnings. Flipside, the Keeper’s original Skull Disco collab ‘Tomb’ gets a rework, the insistent midrange line slotted into a rock-hard selection ofmilitant breaks, subterranean bass and dystopian mechanical noise. HEK004 Air & Lack Thereof – James Blake Hemlock Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Hemlock proudly introduce the debut release for James Blake; South London producer, keyboardist and live vocalist for Mount Kimbie (Hot Flush). Having grown up “Playing along to Stevie Wonder ‘til the early hours and falling asleep to Art Tatum and Erroll Garner” James’s music comes saturated with fresh ideas. He comes correct for Hemlock 004 with two brilliantly off-kilter, blues and funk inflected bombs. The perfect introduction to his distinct sound. All at once fast, slow, melodic and heavy, and with its feet rooted firmly in the dance, a. Air & Lack Thereof is a beautifully wrong and virulently catchy concoction of razor-sharp beats, bluesy vocal snippets, screaming p-funk synths and distortion-a-plenty that all adds up to so much more than the sum of it’s parts. b. Sparing the Horses goes for a darker, more twisted sonic palette. Layers of reversed horns, deep morphing subs and those distinct vocals again, playing over galloping polyrythmic beats for another unique interpretation of the dubstep sound. Worldwide support coming from Joe Nice & Dave Q Instra:mental, Distance, Pangaea, TRG, Ramadanman, Ben UFO, Rob da Bank.
Mixmag – Single of the Month (July) “Perfectly straddles the line between experimental and dancefloor.”
Fact Magazine “Some of these people are too good. Honestly.”

IME013 Elephants – October Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Absolute madness from Immerse here, as October is released from his minimal techno day-centre to wreak havoc amongst the dubsteppers.‘Elephants’ is a pretty appropriate name for the A, as bongo loops and ominuous machine noises are summarily flattened by the phasing bass crunch and trumpeting midrange. Add a dash of running breakbeat to the mix and you have a strange yet effective dancefloor worrier. Flipside, ‘Medium’ opts for broken techno stylings, simmering pads and clattering percussion setting the scene for the tense main event. 8/10 [recommended] Review By Diccon c/o IDJMagazine

Robin O’Reilly, better known to the world as Big Bud, made his name crafting atmospheric drum & bass for labels likes Fabio‘s Creative Source and LTJ Bukem‘s Good Looking. In recent years though, it’s been all about his own label, Soundtrax, where he’s released a series of outstanding releases from himself and like-minded producers.

djbigbud

‘Connections’ takes in a breathtaking selection of sounds and moods, all with a breezy liquid-funk-esque tinge to them. If you already know Soundtrax output then you won’t be disappointed with this CD. If you’re new to the label; what took you so long?!

From the soulful vocal ‘Want You So Bad’ to the Eastern influenced guitar plucks of ‘White Widow’ this album has something for everyone and Big Bud fans can rest assured that he’s updated his production to modern standards but kept all the dynamics his music lives for.
