Von D “Daydreaming” LP [Boka Records]

Von D “Daydreaming” LP [Boka Records]

Posted 27 May 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

‘Daydreaming’ is the debut album release from Paris based artist Von D on Boka Records. A fusion chef of bassweight, Von D has deftly sliced into unpredictable genres, concocting strange and beautiful new forms. The album sees Von D collaborating with the internationally renowned Foreign Beggars, Phephe, David Boomah (vocalist for Shy FX Murderation), Riya & Mr Lager, while his previous work has also been remixed by a host of respected dubstep DJ’s including Skream and Tes La Rok.

Born into the cultural melting pot of the Paris suburbs, Von D found his soul’s conduit in a beaten up old drum kit. Whilst the riddims of King Tubby alongside the foetal jungle of Photek and Serge Gainsborg were initial inspirations, after forging a successful path as a sound engineer Von D honed his sound sculpting skills to a razor sharp edge.

Von D

Von D’s productions have been picked up by Skream, arguably one of dubstep’s most successful artists, who snapped up a release for his label Disfigured Dubs. DJ Chef released Von D’s ‘Show Me’ on his Sub Freq imprint, which quickly became one of the most talked about releases of 2009 – so much so that three time DMC World Champion DJ Craze has been supporting the track in recent mixes.

Not one to be complacent, Von D’s kept up the pressure with releases on Black Acre, Tempa, Soul Jazz and Argon – enough to attract the attention of BBC Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson who has included a track for his hotly anticipated ‘Brownswood Bubblers’ compilation album.

Von D has created a global buzz with his numerous explosive live performances featuring unreleased and exciting material from himself as well as other established producers. Having had a host of successful tours in the United States, Europe and China, Von D has now set his sights on touring New Zealand and Australia.

Coming soon – Quest “Smooth Skin / Wind Tunnel” [DEEP MEDi Musik]

Posted 10 June 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 2 Comments

Quest is one of Dubstep’s forerunners signed to DEEP MEDi Musik and one of Antisocial Entertainment originals alongside Silkie, Heny G, Kromestar, Harry Craze, Jay 5 and Mizz Beats. Quest is never one to shout and make a fuss, always quiet and thoughtful but whilst all around are loosing their heads in the madness Quest has directed all his energy in to his production and is always far more at ease at letting his music do the talking.

Quest

Quest’s 4th release on DEEP MEDi ‘Smooth Skin’ showcases his progression, diversity and forward thinking as a producer. With it’s lush and dreamy opening chords, thumping bass kick, layered percussion and hypnotic vibes, you would be forgiven in forgetting about the B-line until it’s speaker shifting impact almost halfway through the track! Quest showing with ‘Smooth Skin’ that he takes as much inspiration from Detroit legends such as Moodymann and Theo Parrish as he does from label owner Mala (DMZ) and his very own Antisocial Entertainment Crew. ‘Wind Tunnel’ however on the flip sees Quest bouncing back to his Gangsta Boogie vibes for which he is so well known. Heavyweight, frenetic breakneck percussion, insane wall of bass, hard soulful and jazzy influences taking you on a mystical journey into outer space!

S.T. welcomes MJ Cole’s “Prolific Recordings”

S.T. welcomes MJ Cole’s “Prolific Recordings”

After a classical training at The Royal College of Music, MJ Cole’s career began with a job as tape op with drum’n’bass label SOUR. After slogging his way up to the position of engineer, he fell in love with the UK garage sound in the middle of 1996 while working on Ramsey & Fen’s Garage remixes for Kym Mazelle.

mjcole

After an intense bidding war, Cole’s first solo manoeuvre, the classic ‘Sincere’ finally found root with AM:PM and became one of the first garage records to crack the UK’s Top 40. Two years after the single’s success he signed to Gilles Peterson’s label Talkin’ Loud and released ‘Sincere’ the album. This earned him significant notoriety spawning two Top 15 singles, a prestigious Mercury Music Prize nomination, MOBO’s best procucer award and a silver disc for UK sales in excess of 60,000 copies. That album also established MJ Cole internationally as an in demand DJ and remixer. He has remixed everyone from Jill Scott and Mariah Carey to De La Soul and Amy Winehouse.

Whilst his work from the Talking Loud era is more familiar to most, MJ Cole’s in demand more as a DJ now than ever before, appearing regularly at Dubstep, Garage, House, Funky and Bassline parties. He’s also DJing at a handful of festivals over the summer including Glastonbury and The Big Chill. The records he’s making and playing are reflective of this variety of current influences, representing both where he’s come from and where that fits with new underground music. Having recently remixed Dan Black and with a stream of new dance-floor singles to come on his own Prolific label over the next 6 months, 2010 looks to be an exciting year for MJ Cole and for his label, Prolific Recordings.

jamesblake

James Blake proves why he’s one of the most exciting and promising new prospects in UK bass music right now. Taking the bare bones of the Untold original and creating a completely new lick, Blake throws in p-funk synths alongside chipmunk gospel vocals that relentlessly swell to an apocalyptic climax.

The most utterly next level piece of music I’ve heard in years” – Ben UFO (Hessle Audio)
