New D&B CD

NONPLUSCD001 Nothing Is Certain – ASC Nonplus Records CD
Since his first appearance on Nonplus, ASC has been hard at work on his LP and its finally here. Starting with a 12” sampler he dives right in at the deep end with ‘Phobos’ in which electronic grooves and micro samples entwine against a backdrop of dramatic tones and industrial hits. Followed on the same side by the atmospheric hiatus ‘Oort Cloud’ you have a good inclination of the impending album by now, but are also treated to the AA-side ‘Matter Of Time’. Like a continuation of his debut Nonplus 12” track ‘Porcelain’, his crafty use of oriental sounding percussion, windlike sounds and melodies combined with an efficacious bass line make this track very hard to listen to in its entirety before you reach for the reset. The album touches on many genres from start to finish such as the 4×4 offering of ‘Textura’, or the almost indescribable step of ‘Yatta’, but one common theme that this album holds throughout is the amalgamation of influences derived from all genres of music and ASC’s ability to combine these to create something new and unique.
Collaborations with fellow Nonplus artist Vaccine and Exit Records artist Consequence add fuel to the fire, keeping it burning hot from start to finish. Nonplus Records proudly present…….…..ASC – “Nothing Is certain”

BLR004R Make Or Break / Stampede – Outrage / Digital & Outrage Backlash Records 12″ Vinyl
Keepin’ it nice and nasty Backlash hits you with their fourth outing for this Summer 2010. Kickin’ things into high gear is the grimy rumble of Outrage’s “Make Or Break”, which builds on a simply effective melody that gets your head noddin’ and your waist windin’. Interesting tune to drop in your mix, with enough space to cause mass hysteria. Following that is another stellar collaborative banger from Digital and Outrage in the form of “Stampede”. It builds like an oncoming rush of wild animals…the intro plays the calm before you start seeing a cloud of dust kicked up, heightening anticipation and fear, which climaxes in the rush of that sweeping bassline. When this one drops, you get two choices: move or move out of the way! Big boy riddims on both sides of this plate, which is par for the course when it comes to Backlash.

31R046 Detatched / Perish – Sam KDC 31 Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. One of most innovative producers in the Drum & Bass and electronic music scene, Sam KDC display a depth and psychedelic mood.stunningly beautiful music as opposed to simply ‘drum & bass’. Sam explains ‘The 12″ is a really special one to me, both the tunes reflect some really deep rooted memories and feelings of mine. I used to feel like that as a kid listening to Pink Floyd, especially at the beginning of “Comfortably Numb”, something else that was very influential to this piece. The other side, “Perish” is a really personal to me. I finished it and loved it but didn’t want to send it to anyone. It was my housemate at the time, Frank, that convinced me to show it to others, not through what he said, but the fact he asked me for a copy of it and I used to come home and I’d hear it blasting out of his room and he doesn’t even like DnB, so that was a sign to me for that one… The first vocal right at the beginning says “I feel safe with you” and that was something that was missing in my life at the time, and in truth, still is… I called it “Perish” because I sampled a home video from a couple of years ago that I wanted gone, I got rid of the video once I’d taken the audio from it and so it was like that moment in my life was trapped in that piece of music, with all other remaining context of it lost… Perished… taken from http://www.dubplatedigest.net/2010/05/dsm-presents-triad-and-sam-kdc.html

INMD007 Only Words DNB VIP / All The Time – Blue Motion Influenza Media 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Anyone that’s been paying attention to the more chilled out spectrum of drum & bass might find Influenza label owner, Eros causing quite a stir as of late. 2009 saw releases on Golden Orb, InnerGround, Fokuz, Good Looking and of course, Influenza Media; and collaborations with Paul SG, Atmospherix, Mutt, The Square and Soulgrifter. But Eros’ latest project, and perhaps most impressive, is his collaboration with Dirrrty B as Blue Motion. Since November 2009, these two have pressed their driven, upbeat sound into a plethora of labels including Phunkfiction, Good Looking, Fokuz, Ingredients,Future Thinkin, Temper D Productions, Vibez, Peer Pressure, Amen Brother,Point 9 Audio, Funk Star and many more. As we come into this fantastic release, we are met by the mystifying but beautiful intro of Only Words VIP. As if climbing a mountain, the layers just continue to build – synths, bass, rolling drums, and, of course, what melodic track wouldn’t be complete without a few angelic wind instruments? As the break rolls through, the melody rebuilds creating a state of ecstasy once again. All The Time chills it out a bit, bringing forth the soul element with Grimm on vocals. A beautifully constructed string bassline leads the way to the drop, as atmospheric trumpet riffs ring in the background. Get touched on this one!

G-ILLA005 Guilty / Black Monday – Krusha Guerilla 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. GUERILLA 05 12″ Features non other than George Krakus aka KRUSHA ‘Guilty’ is one for the deep rooted soldiers. Epic strings and orchestra sweeps encompass wild roaring amens and rediculous glitches. And just when you thin its over .. the tune really works out the madness of Krusha’s mind. he only thing this record is Guilty of is smashing it up. ‘Black Monday’ totally lets Krusha experiment with the industrial – hard metal edge found in alot of his earlier releases on label’s such as Barcode & Obscene. The intro creeps in. Winding around like a whirlpool till it drops into haltime rickus of eachoes and bass squelches. Grinding metal riffs all the way thru this piece. Defintley one for the die hard Krusha fans.

CHST009 No Warning / Jungle Fears – Distance Chestplate 12″ Vinyl
Hot on the tails of the last double A-sider ‘Menace’ / ‘Beyond’, Chestplate returns with some fresh cut flavours, once again from head honcho Distance. ‘No Warning’ is a floor filling anthem of a tune, with DJ support coming from a range of top names including Skream, Hatcha, Joker, N-Type, Youngsta, Pinch, and many more. In true Distance style ‘No Warning’ starts with a cold errie backdrop, setting the scene for the devastating drop that follows. The hard hitting b-line teases you in the drop before crashing in full weight – combining a filthy thrash guitar sound with intricate future-tech synth programming – everything you need to ignite an instant mosh pit! Flip then for ‘Jungle Fears’ – a carefully constructed deeper and more erie sonic experience in comparison to the more dancefloor sound of ‘No Warning’. Distance takes you through the paranoid soundscapes of a non-descript cyber jungle, with glitched out edits tearing you from one section to the next, haunting pads and tortured synths lighting the path way through. Don’t listen to this on your own late at night!

New DnB Releases

PC080 Chiropteran LP – The Panacea Position Chrome 12″ Vinyl x 3
Limited edition vinyl pressing is heavy weight gloss laminate sleeve. 7 years after his last full-length album, The Panacea releases his 6th studio album entitled “CHIROPTERAN”. as always, he breaks fresh ground with complex song structures and musical variability unlike what you have heard in D’n'B so far. This ingenuity has made The Panacea one of the most praised entertainers in today’s electronic music-scene. while consciously referencing the heritage of early nineties rave music, a reduced, straight sound runs like a red thread through the entire album. what appears to be a well-known scheme is being reinvented both musically and technically, making “Chiropteran” a musical symbiosis of dance and brain-dance. Collaborating with artists such as Donny, Lethal, Dean Rodell and Limewax only adds further colour to the album. overall this record proves to be more than just another 12″ single compilation but masterfully entertains the listener over 78 minutes over the 2 years working on this album The Panacea has found a musical language that transcents trends or genres, thus “Chiropteran” won’t sound dated after a few months but will, in time, prove to be a milestone in electronic music.

AT007 Got Me – Survival Ft. Christina Nicola Audio Tactics 12″ Vinyl
With Survival and Christina Nicola’s last outing, ‘Secrets’, still reverberating through many a club, radio station and podcast and garnering top reviews across the board, the pair waste no time delivering their next installment, ‘Got Me’. Reminiscent of their earlier work which featured on Survival’s self-titled 2008 album for dBridge’s Exit Records, Nicola’s soft, soulful, vocals are the perfect antithesis for the rugged, steely breaks and bass that follow. Flipside ‘Descendant of the Sun’ takes things deeper with a distinctly eastern atmosphere complete with flutes, strings and aquatic effects. DJ support: Fabio, Doc Scott, dBridge, Break, DJ Hype, Bailey, Marcus Intalex, Loxy, Alix Perez, Total Science, Krust, Flight, Silent Witness, Kasra, Zero T…

2009 was the album year for Paradox Music with the release of Alaska & Paradox’s Isolationist LP and now the label returns to the 12″ fold in 2010, kicking off in style with a new solo 12″ from label boss Dev Paradox. Perhaps the Future is a sinister, mystical, gritty and raw number all rolled into one. The Amen brother break is used to great effect creating an new identity of it’s own with it’s intense eq at the forefront of the mix. Rare thought-provoking vocal samples unveil the track’s story and ethos accompanied by bass booms and mysterious sharp film samples conjour scenes straight from a 70’s detective series. 8-Track is one for the B-boys and displays the producers early foundations in DnB. 8-Track is unique from a breakbeat perspective, and displays a sample contrast between the track’s original 60’s jazz/funk roots and a 90’s hiphop version of the same title. Dub delay and vocal effects tie the track alongside deep rumbling bass and the end result alongside Perhaps the Future is another Paradox 12” complete with a strong identity of it’s own. DJ support: Zero T, Equinox, Lynx, Soul Intent, London Elektricity, Alley Cat, Gremlinz

Empty Streets Revisited is a classic fusion of dark / furious Drum & Bass and cold Industrial Hardcore, heavy 909 kicks meld with huge snares and the World’s must ridiculous bass line. Times Like These VIP, the original was in constant repress from 2006; this reworking of the track has been played out often at major events such as Thunderdome (The Netherlands epic Hardcore event) by the likes of Promo and The DJ Producer. It is the definitive DJ Hidden track and perhaps the most well known fusion of Drum & Bass and Industrial Hardcore. IMLTD1201 Viral / Nothing Else Matters – Hobzee & Zyon Base IM:Ltd 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. In drum and bass, things happen quickly. Overnight success comes with one big tune, new labels spring up almost every day, and tracks are declared old news before they have even been released. But even by these standards, IMT:LTD are making serious moves. With seven releases, including two EP’s, to their name since dropping in May this year, the French label celebrate the unprecedented success of their digital venture with this, their first vinyl release to date. This is a big moment for the label, and the pair of tracks represented here are of the calibre we have come to expect from these guys. On ‘Viral’, Hobzee teams up with Zyon Base for a chilled out roller that’ll put the cones through their paces on even the biggest systems. A twisted, growling melody and atmospheric background synths fill the mix up nicely. Stepping with a little more bounce on the B-side, Hobzee goes it alone with ‘Nothing Else Matters’. On a big, wobbly vibe that falls just the right side of silly, this one is sure to bring the dancefloor up a notch when it drops.

CTFAT100 Jookie – Foamo Fat! Records 12″ Vinyl
Fat! Records are back! This, my friends, is jolly spiffing news – especially when they return with something as resoundingly large and summer-specific as this UK funky-tinged number from Foamo. Carnivalesque mischief abounds as horns and infectious Afrobeats weasel their way through the mix of whistles and bass on ‘Centavo’ while ‘Jookie’ takes things even further south of Soa Paulo with an epic horn fest doesn’t dissimlar to Unitedeyes’s ‘Sambana’ if you can remember that far back. To say welcome back would be an understatement. Idj mag review 10/10 and top tune feature! Rob Da Bank played Foamo ‘Jookie’ Saturday on Radio 1. Mistajam drops “Centavo” on BBC 1Xtra 17.03.10

HJRLP49 Splazsh – Actress Honest Jons Records 12″ Vinyl x 2
Darren Cunningham’s eagerly‐awaited new album is an adventurous, ultramodern, thoroughly British affair, rummaging about in the inner lives of house and techno, and brilliantly elaborating the accomplishments of his debut, Hazyville. Determinedly off‐the‐map and resistant to pigeonholing, Cunningham is an enigmatic and playful figure, citing Francis Bacon and Monet as inspirations alongside Theo Parrish, Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir, Daft Punk, ‘binary codes and numeral systems’, and The Avengers. He’s a hard man to pin down — somehow a key player in the post‐dubstep diaspora and yet not there at all — but everything comes across in his shape ‐ shifting, richly textured music. The South Londoner’s acclaimed debut lived up to its name: a series of dreamlike sketches and ideas. For Splazsh the fog has lifted, the sounds are less submerged than before, but still sticky and close — a signature combination of exuberance and introversion, luminescence and puzzlement. Unconstrained by the formal cliches of the dance music he loves, Actress’ melodies and arrangements are enthralled by their own genies. Worlds of disturbance and melancholy revolve giddyingly inside the insidious funk of tracks like Get Ohn and Lost. A range of musical influences is redrawn, from speed garage (Always Human) to grime (Wrong Potion), with none crowned king. There is a reflectiveness — the ambient drift of Futureproofing, the radiophonic judder of Supreme Cunnilingus — in amongst the industrial, synth‐wave flavours of Casanova, and the stirring, stately Maze. Actress has quickly and justly become one of the most respected names in the UK’s new dance music underground. His own label, Werk Discs, has proven itself one of the most formidable and taste‐making UK independents of recent times, bringing the world extraordinary albums from Zomby, Lukid, Lone and Actress himself. In love with the mysteries of groove and repetition, Splazsh is both a culmination and a new beginning for Actress, a substantial and eccentric work from a brave and coolly individual artist. With international press interest gathering — photo features in Dazed And Confused, and Fader in the US, and a session with Wolfgang Tillmans for the cover of the German magazine Groove — the stage is set for Actress.

It’s a special one as Boka Records enlists the services of the current Queen of underground Electronic music IKONIKA for a post-garage relick of ‘Flex’d’ (the original was released on DJ Madd’s ‘Better With You EP’ – BOKA020). It was first showcased by Alleycat on her highly successful Kokeshi Podkast series and is currently garnering support from Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1) and Martyn (3024). It’s certainly a musical departure for the Boka camp but 2010 has been all about diversifying and showcasing all styles within the realms of bass music.
DJ Madd is on a heater right now with support for his music coming from all angles, and so the time is right to release argueably his biggest and most supported track ‘Detroit Skank’, first showcased on Skream‘s ‘Stella Sessions’ radio show on RinseFM. It’s a beast of a roller which expertly incorporates dub and techno influences, the bassline on this one is absolutely sick, the likes of Headhunter, Skream, RSD and Akira Kiteshi have been utilising it in the raves to devastating effect.

CTFAT101 Too Many Times – Randomer Fat! Records 12″ Vinyl
The newly re-launched Fat! Records continue from where they left off with this forward thinking release from Randomer & Fife. Too Many Times sees Rhodes stabs and a super-slick vocal cut ride a bassline that, coupled with the high-energy percussion, builds to a deceptively furious peak before releasing a soaring synth-line that will no doubt strike a chord with fans of Sbtrkt and Joy Orbison. Slum City is an altogether tougher affair with its heavyweight percussion and bass bin punishing drop, yet it once again defies pigeonholing with its blissed-out breaks and vocoder. Futuristic banger! SMOG006 Headshot / Know Yaself – Pawn & EMU Smog 12″ Vinyl
Smog proudly announces the freshman debut of Pawn & EMU on the imprint. Headshot is a classic Half-Time Dubstep tune, but halfway in between, it picks up into 4/4. This makes it an easy grab, for transition DJ’s, or anyone who wants to switch from half time to double time on the dance floor. Headshot is another collaboration featuring the patois lyrical maestro Werd2Jah, and employs his talents to the max. If you like Bongos, and Dancehall style lyrics then this 12” is one not to be missed! With Werd2Jah giving his two cents on the track, the trio make a statement by sending a message to the listener. Know Ya’ Self is a dagger into the heart of the corporate music world, as its hook is reminiscent of Lil Wayne’s A Milli, but is in reference to how everything sounds the same. The Lyrics from Werd2Jah fit right on top of the production style of Pawn & EMU, and the trio make this collaboration one to remember.

ML025 Silence – Monolake Monolake CD
Entitled Silence, the album is the work of Robert Henke, the acclaimed software technology developer for Ableton who has been the sole permanent member of the group since founding member Gerhard Behles left in 2004 to focus full-time on the company. According to early reports, the album is a varied one, taking in both slow and fast BPMs, as well as ambient excursions with, as Henke pointedly proclaims on his website, absolutely no compression whatsoever. (Henke’s three year stint as a mastering engineer and vinyl cutter at Berlin’s Dubplates & Mastering has much to do with this decision.) Put together over the course of a year, Silence also takes in field recordings from a variety of places: “Sound sources include field recordings of airport announcements, hammering on metal plates at the former Kabelwerk Oberspree, Berlin, several sounds captured inside the large radio antenna dome at Teufelsberg, Berlin, dripping water at the Botanical Garden Florence, air condition systems and turbines in Las Vegas, Frankfurt and Tokyo, walking on rocks in Joshua Tree National Park, wind from the Grand Canyon, a friend’s answering machine, a printer, conversations via mobile phones, typing on an old Macintosh keyboard and recordings from tunnel works in Switzerland.”

New D ‘n’ B Releases

CRIT043EP Noir EP – Rockwell Critical Music 12″ Vinyl x 2
Rockwell is a name on everyone’s lips. As if from nowhere he’s managed to get the whole drum & bass scene and more talking about him earning support from such luminaries as Fabio and Gilles Peterson. The ‘Noir EP’ comes not a moment too soon, a release to truly mark his arrival in electronic music and which looks set to turn even more heads. From the sheer sonic brilliance of the film score-inspired title track ‘Noir’ through to the skeletal break and sparse tendancies of the final ‘Tribe’, Rockwell is unfearing in his quest for dark, brooding experimentation that hasn’t been heard in years in drum & bass. An ambition to re-definine the term deep shines though on ‘Stay Calm’, a track that refreshes with glitchy FX, industrial pads and grounding bass that strikes the fear whilst the collaboration with Zero T ‘Bone Structure’ continues the theme with astounding results. Make no mistake people will double-take on this one.
An extraordinary EP that will appeal to lovers of both electronica and pure drum & bass alike. Just add an arm-chair and headphones for maximum satisfaction.

b Rockwell – Stay Calm
c Rockwell Ft. Zero Tolerance – Bone Structure
d Rockwell – Tribes

EXIT019 Wrong Way – Abstract Elements Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
The first release for 2010 on Exit records comes in the form of two tracks by Russian newcomers Abstract Elements, made up of two producers Bop and Diagram. Their tracks caught the attention of label owner dBridge with their seemingly fearless quest for experimentation and have featured heavily in the sets of DJs such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Loxy, ASC and also on the Autonomic podcasts. Both tracks sit just as comfortably at clubs such as FWD as they do in an all out DnB party. “Wrong Way” takes us into a void of sound and space, built around a metronomic radar blip, the track sinks down deep through the uncharted depths of the subsonic bass realms. Attention to detail, intricate use of atmospheric sound effects and devastating low end bass give this track a unique sensation which just cannot be ignored. Repeated listening is required to fully explore the vast soundscape that they have created here. “Abysmal Depth” could be described as a distorted fusion of dub and electronica but also delves into the 4×4 genre.
Once again, their use of constantly transforming effects and mood altering atmospherics give this track the quality of being able to take the listener on a journey and leaves them with an awkward sense of not knowing exactly where they’ve just been. Check out the Fabric Live 50 -dBridge & Instra:mental present Autonomic CD to see just how versatile this track be work in the mix.

FFLP1-2 Demon Remix – Chook Full Force Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. The Cocoon is the culmination of half a decade’s worth of hard work. Starting out in 2004, Chook launched Full Force Recordings as an output for the fierce and disturbing side of European techno influenced drum & bass. The label garnered support right from the off with DJs as diverse as Roni Size, J Majik and Calyx & Teebee all queuing up to work Full Force’s releases into their sets. Chook, alongside friends such as Germany’s Phace (Subtitles), New Zealand’s State of Mind (Shogun Audio) and USA’s Mayhem (Ram Records) put the label firmly on the map with tracks from some of the world’s finest breakbeat artists, keeping the music policy as credible, long-lasting D&B. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook delves deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Some might consider that a lost art in drum & bass these days.

EAR013 Wetwipe Riddim – Ginz & Kool Money Kwame Earwax 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. 2009 saw the world taken by storm as the Bristol born sound of Purple w0w! infiltrated sound systems and radio stations with it’s catchy synth lines and bold approach. Focus so far has mainly been on Joker who ripped up the rule book and laughed hard at it, but a number of the big floor filler productions that helped make his name, such as the anthem ‘Purple City’, were co-produced by the more mysterious Ginz. Exclusively for Earwax Ginz unleashes a plate of bouncing messed up wonky-synth-hopdubstep- purple-whizzle with help on the buttons this time from the even more mysterious Kool Money Kwame. ‘Wetwipe Riddim’ is a Hennessy-hugging monster of a beat, showcasing Ginz’s superb production ethic and musical mastery – it’s both demented and catchy in equal measures! ‘Oreo’ sees further experiments in bendy beats that leaving you on constant catch up, complete with ankle flapping bass and more psychedelic synth work. 3024007 Remixes 2/2 – Martyn 3024 12″ Vinyl
The second half of the Great Lengths Remixes package offers 3 more vividly contrasting interpretations of album tracks .Almost a year on from the release of his debut album “One” and with ‘Saviour of Techno’ plaudits still bouncing off concrete walls, Berghain lynchpin Ben Klock turns in a remix of Is This Insanity that distills everything inspirational about both the club and city he calls home. Spaceape’s cracked vocal is welded to a sort of cavernous piston driven groove while traces of the original’s melody fractured into the briefest of shards fight their way to the surface only to sink back into the percussive smog. Located well outside of the heavily scrutinised UK hype centres, Manchester’s rising star Illum Sphere continues to hone his already distinct sound on the flipside’s Brilliant Orange reworking. A clanking off kilter groove rubs up against an extended mutation of the original melody that pushes the track towards a poignant climax, evoking all the ache of reaching for the stars and landing squarely on one’s face.

It’s truly King Tubby-style dub for the 21st century. The track is getting massive advance play from artists like Jus Wan, F and Mary Anne Hobbs, to name a few.
SF’s Dean J. Grenier, a.k.a. DJG has risen quickly in the electronic ranks via singles on Tube 10, Subway and Narco Hz that showcase his potent techy tracks. He links up with Toronto, Canada’s XI, whose releases on Formant and Immerse have lead to mixes for Sonic Router and a growing international following. “Putney Says” features an intricate, percussive rhythm that lumbers like a giant, each step punctuated by mountainous bass thumps. Sizzling analog synths, vaporous filtered pads and well-timed drops round out this effective and tension-building work.

GUT001 I’m Not Her – Goldielocks Gut Instinct 12″ Vinyl
Finished copies. A co-production with Benga – the brilliantly sparse, bleepy ‘Green Eyes’ – is going to grab people’s attention, but the other three tracks here are easily as good. Sarah “Goldielocks” Akwisombe makes outstanding modernist electro-pop with dark, emotionally intense lyrical themes and a hefty DJ-friendly dubstep wallop, and is without question a talent who is here to stay. The EP is overall inspired by London, underground music scenes – 2step / garage / grime and dubstep, paranoia, relationships and concealed emotions.

BRK014 Sugar Coated Lover – Geiom Feat. Marita Berkane Sol 12″ Vinyl
Berkane Sol moves into a new decade with the future soul of ‘Sugar Coated Lover’. Back in ’08 Marita and Geiom blessed the dubstep scene with the certified classic Reminissin’, this time they turn their radar towards the vibrant keys and soca style drumz of UK funky.
Elements of disco, techno and house wrap themselves around Marita’s delicious vocal, with a sweet synthy steel drum melody leading up to the seriously catchy hook. Marita and Geiom take the sounds of house music both old and new and create a sophisticated hybrid that joins the dots between producers like Todd Terry, Luomo and Roska.
On the flip the unstoppable Blunted Robots team of Brackles and Shortstuff take the raw elements off to their workshop, clear some space on the bench and begin to rebuild according to their own confused specifications. They fill the CPU of the new machine with the original data, a DJ EZ set and the best bits of early Search and Destroy – after some extensive experimentation we find them both happily shockin’ out – until Shortstuff realises that most of the vocal is missing and what’s left is severely broken – so they sprinkle on an extra helping of their sweetest arpeggios in the hope that Geiom doesn’t notice.
This 12″ fits perfectly into the creative space that has opened up in UK underground dance music, taking ideas from garage, techno, dub, grime and house and melting them into exhilarating new forms.
It has found favour with all the usual suspects including – Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank (Radio1), Kode 9, Scratcha DVA, Oneman, Alexander Nut (RinseFM) and Untold.

HES011 The Bells Sketch – James Blake Hessle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Hessle Audio’s eleventh release comes from James Blake, a 21-year-old from London, who has previously released for Hemlock Recordings, as well as having an EP in the pipeline for R&S. This three track EP exclusively features his own warped and manipulated vocals. James also joins Mount Kimbie for their live shows, singing as well as playing keyboard.
“James Blake’s mongrelised, pitch-bent production style finds kinship with dubstep’s Joker and Untold, but his secret weapon is his voice: Blake sings with a sweet, honey-soaked coo that betrays his traditional background in music: one that knew the Family Stone long before it’d heard of FWD>>” – Tom Lea, Fact Magazine
Hessle Audio was formed in Leeds in early 2007 by David Kennedy, Ben Thomson and Kevin McAuley. The label has released tunes by TRG, Martyn, Pangaea, Ramadanman / Pearson Sound, Joe and Untold. In addition, Hessle Audio tunes have appeared on compilations by Tempa, Scape, Soul Jazz and Global Underground. Hessle Audio hold a residency at London club Fabric.

LUCKYDEVIL007 Liberty City Blues – Data / Incident & Paul SG Lucky Devil 12″ Vinyl

After a brief hiatus, we return with a delicate slice of wax that epitomises what LDR stands for – new, original music from hardworking, young artists. After the success of Data’s “Blowpipe” on LD5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like Metalheadz, Critical, Revolution and Tempa, Data brings us a grimy gem in the form of “Liberty City Blues”. Incident from Hungary and Paul SG from Austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent Knowledge Magazine cover CD mix. “Liberty City Blues” is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early Photek or Source Direct. From the outset the tune just bubbles with menace and keeps on building and evolving throughout. A pure bass-heavy slice of proper jungle. “Autumn Drops” is a soulful roller that shows that this crew are ones to watch in 2010. Full of melancholy, icy vibes and a subtle basslinethat gets right under your skin, this track is a firm favourite for this year

DARKESTRALEX002 Dreadtone / Timeloss – Consequence Darkestral Excursions 12″ Vinyl

LIMITED EDITION 500 copies manufactured on white with black streaks vinyl, in black reverse board, with overprinted pantone logo. Following the Keep an Eye On section accolade and 5/5 Album review ‘..downright essential’ in current edition of Mixmag, Consequence’s debut Darkestral release comes as the second in the Excursions series. ‘Dreadtone’ and ‘Timeloss’ are two essential forays into the zero gravity production style Consequence is rapidly building a name for. Heavy as molasses and just as thick atmospherically, both tracks have an almost dread-step feel to them, gaseous air pervading the cinemascopic textures and construction and warm deep bass as an undercarriage.

BLUSYNC002 Sampler 2 Sync: Saphir LP – Electrosoul System / Bionic1 Blu Saphir 12″ Vinyl

For the second sampler of the Sync:Saphir album collaboration, the sounds are switched up a bit, bringing in a very heavy remix of Electrosoul System’s Fun (from BLUS004) and newcomer BIONIC1′s Love Machine. These two tunes put a new spin on the usual Blu Saphir and Syncopix releases you’re used to, bringing deep, techy, rolling vibes to the table. You’re all used to Henree, spitting out releases over the last five years on the likes of Blindside, Deep Kut, Sound Trax, Lucky Devil, Phunkfiction, Soul:R and Vampire. BIONIC1 is a newcomer to Drum & Bass, but he’s got a rolled out sound that’s not to be missed!

A. ELECTROSOUL SYSTEM — FUN (HENREE REMIX) Before listening to this remix, you might want to revisit the original to notice the change in texture and sound. Henree definitely lays it down with this remix. Bass heavy and driving, you’ll feel bass quakes rolling through the floor as this one passes through the sound system. The opening resembles the original, but that’s all you’re going to get that hasn’t really changed. The moody chord progression that is stabilized throughout the track is enough to make a spine tingle, while the minimal vocal adds spice and atmosphere to an already amazing work. Very melodic and uplifting, an excellent choice in remix selection for this record!

B. BIONIC1 — LOVE MACHINE There is no one word to describe this track. One second you’re locked inside some type of futuristic space encounter, and then bombarded by techy stabs and vicious bass in the next. Following a sexy and seductive vocal, “Wanna go for a ride?,” all chaos breaks loose! Rolling tech funk is the name of the game here! Fans of labels like DNAudio, Black Reign LTD, Quarantine, Critical and Shadow Law will want to check into this one!

SUPPORT: MARCUS INTALEX, DJ MARKY, RANDOM MOVEMENT, S.P.Y AND MANY MORE.

A nice quick follow-up to a great first release on Wedge’s new label ISP,….this time by his good friend Gatekeeper. As the name suggests, ‘Blip’ on….the A centres around an incessant beep motif, slowly treated and effectedover time as the tune develops – sliding breaks, deep punchy bass, and then those gorgeous shimmering chords evolving throughout. On the B, Gatekeeper tackles Appleblim’s Skull Disco anthem ‘Vansan’ – expounding the original themes of texture created by delay and reverb and incorporating them into a 140bpm technical jungle piece. 9/10 [recommended] DJ Thinking IDJ Magazine.

Support from: Pinch, Joker, Mary Anne-Hobbs, Plastician, N-Type, MRK1, Cotti and many more…

2009 in review…

Posted 22 December 2009 | By | Categories: news, reviews, tracks, video | No Comments

It’s that time of the year when music related blog’s get their chart heads on and review 2009 with their top albums and singles, we tried something a little similar when S.T. Holdings staff members recently picked their ‘Top 3 Tracks of the Year’: http://www.stholdings.co.uk/2009/12/02/s-t-holdings-staff-charts-2009/

On perusing around the internet at the various charts we have found a mountain of accolades for some of the labels we have been representing, here’s a short run down of some of the finest records this year according to the masses and the music moguls:

HFT009
Joy Orbison
Hyph Mngo

It’s been a meteoric rise to fame for Joy Orbison, a release picked up by Hotflush Recordings (ran by Scuba) and released on his more techno orientated sub-label (HFT), first raved about by Martin Blackdown for his Pitchfork Blog and since then has completely blown up with Joy being tipped for the top in 2010 by the BBC Music Longlist: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8388584.stm

The tune has also been picked up on by the NME who voted the track their 18th (out of 50) ‘Best Tracks of the Year’: http://www.nme.com/list/50-best-tracks-of-2009/159979/page/4

Boomkat follow suit and position the track No.9 out of 100 in the ‘Tracks of the Year’: http://www.boomkat.com/charts.cfm?id=517&gID=10

We await to hear the development of Mr. Orbison’s sound in 2010…..

3024005
Martyn
Great Lengths LP

Martyn’s debut LP was a big success and the internet was flooded with information and hype about the album, his crossover from Drum & Bass to the more techno/house influenced Dubstep sound was great timing and he soon became the figure at the forefront of that particular sound.

It has won alot of ‘awards’ this year across many sites, including no.3 in Resident Advisors ‘Top 20 Albums of 2009′: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1121

12th in FACT Magazine‘s ‘Top 100 Album’s of 2009′: http://www.factmagazine.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4134&Itemid=103&limit=1&limitstart=5

A mention in the ‘Lost 9 of 2009′ section on Drowned In Sound: http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4138671-lost-9-of-09-2-2562-unbalance?2009

16th in Boomkat‘s ‘Top 100 Album’s of 2009′: http://www.boomkat.com/charts.cfm?id=516&gID=10

Watch out for Martyn’s forthcoming releases coming in 2010, first will be a 2 part remix release, details here: http://www.stholdings.co.uk/2009/11/30/forthcoming-on-3024-martyn-the-remixes/

RAMP022LP
Zomby
One Foot Ahead Of The Other

Ramp Recordings have had a host of big releases this year, notably the Zomby Mini-LP which featured artwork by  Kate Moross taking the 8-bit Nintendo sounds to the extreme and cementing himself as one of the artists at the forefront of electronic music. Songs supported by the likes of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and Kissy Sell Out on Radio 1.

FACT Magazine voted it No.7 of their ‘Best 40 Albums of 2009′: http://www.factmagazine.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4134&Itemid=103&limit=1&limitstart=6

Boomkat voted it No.3 in their ‘Top 100 Albums of 2009′: http://www.boomkat.com/charts.cfm?id=516&gID=10

More to come from Zomby no doubt in 2010!

DRUNKCD002
Peverelist
Jarvik Mindstate

Peverelist’s debut album finally landed on his own Punch Drunk imprint recently, a producer with relatively few releases to his name but always quality over quantity, a well renowned producer who has worked with Shackleton, Appleblim and has performed remixes for the likes of Pole, along with Martyn he is one of the forerunners of the Techno influenced Dubstep sound.

Resident Advisor made it No.19 in their ‘Best 20 Albums of 2009′ list: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1121

Boomkat made it No.85 in their ‘Top 100 Albums of 2009′: http://www.boomkat.com/charts.cfm?id=516&gID=10

Expect big things from Punch Drunk in 2010, a Hyetal & Shortstuff 12″ is due for release on 18th January 2010.

KAP004
Joker & Ginz
Purple City

Kapsize, the Bristol based label co-run by Joker and Pinch’s Multiverse has been showcasing some huge Joker productions this year, notably ‘Purple City’ by Joker & Ginz. Joker has gone from strength to strength this year and is set to blow big time next year, having headlined the Sonar dubstep stage and undertaken some high profile remix work.

XLR8R voted it amongst their ‘Best of 2009′ list: http://www.xlr8r.com/features/2009/12/bumpin

Pitchfork voted for it amongst their ‘Best 100 Tracks of 2009′: http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/7742-the-top-100-tracks-of-2009/5/

Here’s looking forward to 2010.

We’ll leave you for the year with some previews of some releases you can expect to see released in January 2010:

Merry Christmas!

HZN036EP The Prologue – Data Horizons Music 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy Promo’s. Horizons Music proudly presents The Prologue EP, a glimpse at a dystopian future, created by Data (N.Burne). Ambience, vibe, groove and experimentation are brought to the fore, whilst each track has it’s own distinct tone and direction. Heavily inspired by works such as William Gibson’s ‘Neuromancer’ and ‘Burning Chrome’, the music contained within aims to create images in the mind. Data’s also created some quotes to help set the scene. Come and take a walk through the Sprawl…
Vice Welcome to the Sprawl’s Red Light District, where anything can be bought… Lush chords and vocal stabs introduce Vice, whilst a broken and staggered beat provides the rhythm. An sleazy vibe is brought forth from the arrangement, which builds to it’s dramatic drop, with a huge bassline, that folds around the beat perfectly. The 2nd half of the track takes on a more musical approach, with lush synth tones providing a stunning melody to finish the track.
The Sprawl The dome towered over them, protecting them from the harmful rays that the Ozone layer could no longer shelter them from. Their sun was not one of gold, but of grey… Sinister ambience creeps towards you from the speaker as a heavy stepping beat provides the pace through The Spawl. Distant cries and the buzz of machinery mingle amongst each other, whilst drones buzz overhead. Dramatic effects break the beat apart before the breakdown, where a menacing bass enters the fray. Percussion hits, fragments of breaks and strange fx keep things moving throughout the track, with a distinct change in the second section keeping the listener interested till the end.
The Enemy Within Pain streaked through his body as the virus began to eat away at his cybernetics. Time was running out. Twisted and abstract, The Enemy Within is driven by it’s disgusting synth line and strange glitch beat. Technical yet restrained, it’s hypnotic patterns draw you into it’s midst, whilst bell like tones provide an ominous atmosphere. Hissing bitcrushed ride cymbals pick up the pace, whilst a distorted midtone provides the response to bass.
Antenna They fear the visionary experience, for you have to go through a kind of death to experience it… Featuring Cell and clocking in at 140 bpm, Antenna is mostly ambient in it’s approach until the later sections, where a huge thumping and distorted drum line is matched with a massive 808 bass section. Space like pads and synths and matched by strange whirring sounds, whilst distorted tones glitch in and out of it’s audio landscape. Fragments of radio messages can be heard, metaphysical messages that echo out of the speaker into your mind. A totally unique and abstract approach.

a Data – The Sprawl
b Data – Vice
c Data – The Enemy Within
d Data & Cell – Antenna

EXIT017 Live For Never (LP Sampler) – Consequence Exit Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

b2 Consequence – Short Lived

INMD005 Battlecat / Grapefruit – Donnie Dubson Influenza Media 12″ Vinyl
Germany has seen the evolution of many successful labels and artists over time, including (The) Panacea, Current Value, Twintone and Blu Saphir Recordings. But more recently, Digital Colours and Fokuz LTD artist, Donnie Dubson has stepped into the fray, joining the roster of immaculate talent on one of Belgium’s most well-known chill-out labels, Influenza Media. Coming a long way from his first release on Have-A-Break Recordings in 2006, Donnie’s masterful production has landed him spots on compilations and podcasts by the likes of Phunkfiction Recordings, Hospital Records and Knowledge Magazine, while collaborating with such artists as Stunna and Andy Sim. The fifth instalment on Influenza Media features two very different but “feel good” pieces. Battlecat is lush with its’ subtle, warm bass lines, while Grapefruit pummels forward with its’ bass-heavy kicks and sweeping pad melodies. If I were to speak to Donnie myself, I’d be the first to comment on his magnificent arrangement of the breakdown on both tunes. The halftime break in Grapefruit is very welcoming, and it really does a great job working its’ way towards the dance floor for the second drop. Battlecat uses a more traditional technique, using bass stabs to push the second drop into full throttle.

b Donnie Dubson – Grapefruit

New Dubstep CD

DRUNKCD001 Good Energy (A Singles Collection) – RSD Punch Drunk Records CD
RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music stalwart Rob Smith (one half of respected production duo Smith and Mighty), has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for more than two decades. He remains firmly at the forefront of Bristol’s endlessly inventive music scene, with a staggering discography and a range of projects encompassing dub, jungle, 2-step and dubstep, From his musical beginnings playing guitar in local roots reggae band Restriction, Rob’s music has always had a strong dub aesthetic. Forming the, now legendary, production duo Smith and Mighty with collaborator Ray Mighty in 1987, the pair’s early releases on the Three Stripe label were influential in laying the groundwork for both the trip hop and jungle scenes for which Bristol would become renowned. A period of chart success and major label involvement in the early nineties was followed by a return to their underground roots for Smith and Mighty. During this time Rob also worked with Peter D. Rose to release groundbreaking music on their More Rockers imprint. Rob Smith also went on to collaborate with local roots reggae producers Henry & Louis. This fruitful relationship culminated in 2001 with the release of the fantastic ‘Time Will Tell’ LP. More recently, Rob Smith has found a new home as RSD, comfortably adapting to the rolling, sub- heavy rhythms of dubstep. With releases on internationally respected labels such as Punch Drunk, Tectonic and Earwax, RSD’s sound is typified by impossibly heavy soundsystemtesting sub-lines and junglist dub breaks. The irresistible energy of tunes such as 2007′s infectious junglist roller “Pretty Bright Lights” and 2008′s speaker destroying dread-fuelled steppers “Over It” & “Jah Way” has rapidly cemented them as anthems. This Punch Drunk CD collection compiles tracks from many of the 12”s released in the past two years under the RSD moniker.

1 RSD – Forward Youth
2 RSD – Green Hill
3 RSD – Firewall (ft. Wilks)
4 RSD – Good Energy

New Dubstep Releases

IME013 Elephants – October Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Absolute madness from Immerse here, as October is released from his minimal techno day-centre to wreak havoc amongst the dubsteppers.‘Elephants’ is a pretty appropriate name for the A, as bongo loops and ominuous machine noises are summarily flattened by the phasing bass crunch and trumpeting midrange. Add a dash of running breakbeat to the mix and you have a strange yet effective dancefloor worrier. Flipside, ‘Medium’ opts for broken techno stylings, simmering pads and clattering percussion setting the scene for the tense main event. 8/10 [recommended] Review By Diccon c/o IDJMagazine.

AA October – Medium

DP030 King Pin – The Others Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police churn out yet another stonking release from label veterans The Others. Kicking off the single is the almighty ‘Kingpin’, which has been battered by the likes of Caspa, Skream, N-Type and The Scratch Perverts. With an intro full of suspense and a drop that packs one serious punch, this is a track guaranteed to bring any dance floor to submission, absolutely heavyweight! Things couldn’t be more different on the flip as The Others show their soulful side with the beautiful ‘Splinter In My Soul’, which has been kept ultra exclusive until full release! Soft melodies and warm bass with a ‘Soul:R’ esq vibes, not your usual from these boys but a stunning piece of music none the less. In a nutshell this release has it all, quality stuff from the DP camp once again.

DP031 The Future – Trolley Snatcha Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police yet again show their aim of bringing through new talent with the first single of newbie Trolley Snatcha. And don’t be fooled by the name, this kid doesn’t hang around Asda nicking trolley’s all day, instead he produces some seriously big tunes! Kicking things off is the brutal sounds of ‘The Future’, with the dubplate battering stamp of approval from the likes of Caspa, The Others, N-Type and co. A quite unsuspecting intro before one serious kick in the knackers of bassline pressure, this one is straight up murderation on any dance floor! The flip sees the slightly more upbeat ‘Scattah’, which once again is not for the faint hearted and found its way in to the sets of Skream and the usual big hitters of dubstep royalty. Gritty, dark and relentless bass with pounding beats are the order of the day, making this a tough debut 12” from this young bass jedi.

HF023 Sketch On Glass – Mount Kimbie Hotflush Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Mount Kimbie have carved out another superb foursome for Hotflush, and once again the music is just as comfortable in the hiphop or electronica realm as it is dubstep. Folksy melodies and ducking piped synths swoop over garage cheek and serrated bass in opener ‘Sketch On Glass’, before ‘Serged’ takes us deeper and darker with its anti-quantised beats, spring reverb drips and surgically-altered vocals. Flipside, an epic sonic vista in ’50 Mile View’ makes way for delicate instrumental RnB before the introverted 2-step bleep of ‘At Least’. (Words C/O diccon IDJ Mag Issue 116)

KRKN010 Work Dat Box – Jaybird Kraken Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy Promo’s. Kraken are rolling again, with their second release in as many weeks (Check out KRKN009), and it’s good to have the Denmark based don’s back! Very little is known about A-side artist and LA resident Jaybird, but i’m sure plenty of people will be on the hunt for info after this little number drops. Absolutely relentless, crushing dubstep music, a refreshingly nasty little number reminiscent in atmosphere to one of Kraken’s earliest releases ‘Eye Of The Demon’ by Wolfman (JSL), this tune is currently tearing up clubs worldwide, with support from 2000F and notably featuring on Hatcha & Crazy D’s Kiss FM radio show, you’re gunna love this one! Legendary Kraken artist JSL pops up on the flip with a brand new beat, kept relatively under wraps this one comes out of nowhere and smacks is straight round the chops like Kimbo Slice! Act quickly on this one, it won’t last.

ACRE014 Boom N Pow – Akira Kiteshi Black Acre Records 12″ Vinyl
First 500 on LTD transparent red vinyl.
Edinburgh’s prodigal son returns to the boards for another alchemic fusion of glitchy boom bap and tear out noise terror. Boom N Pow, explodes out of the starting blocks with Akira’s super fresh sound aesthetic. Solid battle hardened hip hop drums sway and tumble under the pressure of aquatic bass and citric stabs. Just as the b-boys heads are bopping the beats shrink, normal gravity is restored and the barely audible rants of Akira’s imaginary Japanese self begins the wind up to point where Akira Kiteshi justifies his new title as master of the 2nd drop. Boom N Pow (Raffertie Remix) in an attempt to win most cutting edge banger of 09 we have employed the services of Planet Mu’s hot boy Raffertie on the re-up. Here the Brum hardcore enthusiast bring bitch slap snares, degraded synths and his own unique brand drunken noise chaos. Keeping up the neck snapping pace Raff flips the script on the 2nd drop into the kind of chaos best described as Aphex Twin on a Ragga Tip. It’s big and it IS clever…. Support: Mix Master Mike, Bobby Friction, Rob Da Bank, N Type, Reso, Raffertie, Joker, Starkey, MF GLK.

IBR003 Hard Boogie For Dub Swingers EP (Part Two) – Relocate Iberian 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The new release from Lisbon/Barcelona based Iberian Records sees the second part of Relocate’s “Hard Boogie For Dub Swingers EP” hit wax. First up are Lisbon’s Kuduro warriors Buraka Som Sistema with a remix of Relocate’s “Dot Dot Dash”. Clever micro samples from the original rub are married to an absolutely slamming b-line to create a full on floor-filler full of original flava which very successfully merges UK bass to the Portuguese sound. On the flip we have “Origins” from Relocate; which sees their unique stripped down sub-heavy bassline boogie to full effect. Relocate come up trumps once again with a full on roller of a track with trademark gliding bass dives and punchy stabs from a classic sidestepper Zed Bias sample and a very much house meets dubstep type of vibe. Both tunes are guaranteed to set the dance alight with their characteristic Iberian bass and groove flow. Support has come from the likes of Bunzero, Subsound, Markle, Blackdown, TRG, Ben UFO and Zed Bias.

COUNT026 How You Like Me Now? (Joker Remix) – The Heavy Counter 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The Heavy return with next single from their forthcoming album, “The House That Dirt Built,” a widescreen funk epic, moving from JBs shuffle to crashing break, Animals guitar and horn fanfares, a huge build which is set to bring the house down wherever it’s played. As if the original wasn’t enough, The Heavy have compiled a superb package of remixes. Fellow West Countryman Joker, gives the original a huge dollop of Purple and comes up with something sounding like Timberlake smoking skunk in St Pauls. Sometime Mowgli-collaborator Solo goes more down a 4/4 route, building up the congas etc into a perfect example of what he calls “midget house”. Finally, Ghost takes the tempo down and emphasises the mournful backing vocals for a suitably majestic finale. As if this wasn’t enough, The Heavy have also thrown in a bonus track, “Tell It Like It Is,” a country-fried hoe-down which emphasizes just how good Swaby’s voice is. Produced by Jim Abbiss (best known for his work with the Arctic Monkeys, Adele and Kasabian), “The House That Dirt Built” is a breakthrough record from one of the most exciting bands in the UK just now. With a growing rep in the States, festival dates lined up for the summer and a huge tour to support the album this autumn, the Heavy have just built their house on your front lawn. Get used to the view.

FDLP3 Guilty Feet, No Rhythm – Rigas den Andre Flogsta Danshall 12″ Vinyl
What’s wrong with Rigas den Andre? He’s young, gifted and comes from a well-respected noble family and still his music speaks the ancient mournful language of the rocky Swedish archipelago. Because of this, RDA could be easily dubbed as the meister of melancholic electronic party music. Or “blue funk” as the exact term should be in my opinion. Take my word and dive in to the sea of emotions provided by RDA’s new album “Guilty Feet, No Rhythm”. I promise You confusion. Take a journey through the depressing digital funk of “No Heaven” or reach for the joyous synthesizer excursions of “W.A.S.P.” or “Go, Rangers, Go!”.And don’t forget to boogaloo to the epic title track which sounds like Timbaland and Björn Ulvaeus had a son. Because, in the end RDA’s music is like life itself: Gloomy, mournful, slow, but oh so funky!

LIGHTLESSLP002 Homefree – Fanu Lightless Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 3
Junglist. Samplist. Breakbeat aficionado. Passionate DJ. Avid music lover. Those are some of the descriptions that fit Fanu. While living in the rather dark and cold North of Finland, he got into the jungle thing in the mid-nineties – soon after hearing some electronic music during the earlier years of the decade. Around that time, he also started experimenting with electronic music and sampling for the first time. “I lived in a small countryside town, where I didn’t really have anything better to do. My friends exposed me to some early electronic stuff and I was blown away immediately. Soon I found myself trying to emulate the tracks I heard, sampling, layering and combining all kinds of different sounds.” But it wasn’t until he heard jungle that he knew there’d be no turning back: The long awaited second album by Finlands Fanu. Be sure to check out what the breaks maestro has been cooking up in the studio!

BS1017 Cienfuegos – Davide Carbone BS1 12″ Vinyl
‘Cienfuegos’: One hundred _fires in Spanish, and also one of the coolest Cuban cities. Parallels between the word and the track are hard to find, although if somewhere was burning down, the apocalyptic residue would sound something like this. ‘Deep, deep, deep’ is how some of the scenes most eulogised producers have called it. The oldest of pure analogue bass shaped using the newest techniques means this tune stands apart. Like the old days. Listen to it loud. ‘Radionuclide’ is more fun than you bargained for. Proper cutting 70‘s layered bass, over some original lead sound design and you have a bouncer that forces a smile on even those six feet under. The vocal stabs give it character and de_nition and the beats drive it to unrecognisable speeds. Musical, warm and bangin’. BS1 017 – The place to be.

Cern has spent the last few years blazing a trail of intricate tech flavoured funk on labels like Critical, Renegade Hardware, Symptom, Shady Brain, Fokuz and is currently working on a future project for Concord Dawns’ Uprising label. ‘Timeslip’ treats the tech step template like a jagged worn jigsaw, taking it’s pieces, sharpening them into potent weaponry and forcing them into new sequences. Shuddering sliding rhythms pound their ingenious funk with the soaring Reese in the second breakdown never failing to draw cheers of delight from appreciative dancefloors. ‘Eastern Gates’ is a subtle rolling slice of funk, laden with a gorgeous eastern female vocal that saunters over what has become a trademark tech groove from Mr Cern. ACRE012 Fall – Rich Reason & Fantastic Mr Fox Black Acre Records 12″ Vinyl
Clocking in here for the first time since their warmly received debut on Hemlock, Rich Reason & Fantastic Mr Fox jerk the Black Acre steering wheel sharply left into a murky new trajectory. Fall, an ode to the autumnal onset features the lush sound textures that have become the Manc super team’s calling card. Kicking off as a horn blasting bass-lead 130 skanker, Fall proceeds to hoodwink the listener with haunted soul and anomalous artefacts buried deep in the sampledelic mist. A thin line is deftly navigated in combining the muscular low-end with an enriching sound palate, stimulating both body and synapse. Lo-Fi-Ve, walks a longer more arduous path, masquerading initially as a sinuous dose of future garage, the clipped snares and 808 boom will have you on your feet quicker than the ice cream truck. Ever the curve ball pitchers, a Hitchcockian twist abruptly takes us into the obscure. Distant horns and warping bass are bathed in the UV glare of bubbling operatic synth-work climaxing in a cascade of citric sound. Support: Jamie Vex’d, Bobby Friction, TRG, Untold, Geiom, DJ Yoda, Pangaea, Kid Kameleon. Reviews: DJ, Mixmag, Wire, IDJ

HDB022 Wind It Up – Mark Pritchard Ft. Om’mas Keith HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Mark Pritchard is a highly respected electronic artist whose extensive pedigree of solo and joint productions includes names such as Harmonic 313, Global Communication, Reload, Jedi Knights and Link. Om’mas Keith is a member of the cosmically sleazy Sa-Ra Creative Partners. Their inspired collaboration on ‘Wind It Up’ took shape in mid 2008 and is finally being released on Hyperdub after building a strong following on dubplate, igniting audiences on dancefloors across the planet. ‘Wind It Up’ synthesises some of Hyperdub’s recent tricks into a bubbling compound of Mark’s pressurised electrofunk, and the futuristic off-beat synth-hop shuffle of Om’mas, with the essential catalysing X element of the Sa- Ra don’s gravel-voiced lyrics. In high DJ demand since the start of the year, ‘Wind It Up’ is a fun and forward-looking dose of transatlantic synergy that’s as unique as it is danceable. Reception to the tune in clubs worldwide has been explosive, and it’s already firmly established as an anthem at 1 Xtra DJ Benji B’s hype Deviation nights. Add in the flipside Freak Mix, which raises echoes of Goblin and John Carpenter’s tingling synthetic atmospherics, plus an instrumental rub, and the result is a hugely anticipated release.

However now, to coincide with the release of our new Future:Dubstep compilation series Eight:FX proudly present a return to vinyl for a series of Future:Dubstep 12”’s. 01 in the compilation series is mixed by Kiss 100’s Hatcha, with 02 mixed by Dubstep’s fastest rising stars, Bare Noize. As such, the first in our series of 12”’s contains two anthems from each Hatcha (and studio partner Lost – of H.E.N.C.H) and Bare Noize. Since being established back in 2005, Eight:FX has gone on to release singles from Dubstep’s most established names as well as supporting upcoming talent, including the likes of Kromestar, Tes La Rok, Djunya, Nika D (Virus Syndicate), MRK1, Cyrus (Random Trio) and Hatcha. Hatcha is the original Dubstep DJ, mixing the genres first compilation, holding down the first commercial Dubstep radio show on London’s Kiss 100 and having countless releases on some of Dubstep’s longest and most established labels. These two club smashes are created alongside Lost – a producer who since being signed exclusively to the H.E.N.C.H label has received consistent support from Dubstep’s biggest DJs. On the flip Bare Noize follow up their Dubstep chart topping debut release, Make Some F*cking Noize, which has gone on to gain huge support and feature on various compilations including The Cut Up Boys’ ‘Mash Up Mix 2009’ (Ministry Of Sound). Now locking down sets all over the UK and continuing to release on leading Dubstep labels, namely Eight:FX and Z Audio, Bare Noize now present two of their best productions to date with these ominous Dubstep anthems.

New Skweee Releases

FD012 Babi – Mrs Qeada Flogsta Danshall 7″ Vinyl
Continuing to forge it’s reputation as spiritual home of the neo Hip Hop Skweee sound, Flogsta drop the 8 bit crunching Mrs Qeada. Lo-Fi is order of the day here with Nintendo driven melodies, zaps blips riding drunken style over a palate of distorted drums. Support from: Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank, Kode 9

FD013 Ritam Bluz – Joxaren Flogsta Danshall 7″ Vinyl
Mars Attacks on part 2 of this week’s Skweee barrage, with haunting theramin tones, sinuous byte smashing basslines and more than a hind of that ol boom bap, Joxaren brings sci-fi grooves back to the floor. On the flip the spirit of Rick James is channelled through cheap drum machines and tron house bag sythns, culminating in a warped take on 80’s funk. Support: Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank and Kode 9.
a Joxaren – Ritam Bluz
b Joxaren – Oklart Uppdrag
