This is an album that deserves and requires repeat listening, promising its audience greater rewards the deeper they dig.

Within a few years, Jakes has gone from being one of the big name MCs of the drum and bass world to now being one of the most talked about Producers in Dubstep. In a very short space of time, the progression towards his now trademark style has been applauded by many – and not limited to the Dubstep scene.

In 2009, the release of The Jakes Project, which included anthems such as Rock Tha Bells and Warface, demonstrated Jakes’ ability to straddle genres with his aptness for innovation and style remaining intact. With his own productions receiving widespread support from as wide- ranging DJs from Skream to Crookers to Mary Anne Hobbs to Gaslamp Killer, Jakes has gone on to produce remixes that have topped download charts and he regularly receives extensive radio coverage. With this in mind, it’s no wonder that his label has a host of talented artists releasing their productions through the HENCH imprint.

Having masterfully mixed the HENCH Mixtape (Vol. 1), Jakes introduces several of his unreleased works into the label showcase. Featuring VIP’s of many of his previously released tracks; the mix offers something new even for the hardiest of HENCH fans. Providing a platform for both established artists as well as those who are less familiar amongst the scene’s heads – one of the mix’s defining accomplishments is the uniformity in standard of production.

Komonazmuk, who is currently writing his debut album that will be released on HENCH later in 2010 has also made a stunning tune to lend to the mix (You Fo’). Giant’s hugely successful Swoosh and a VIP of Drumstick, along with VIP’s of Eddie K’s debut 12” on the label also feature. Tracks from the unmistakable Chasing Shadows and Lost are dropped into the mix, which will only add to the splash that these young producers are currently creating in the music scene.

Not to be overshadowed by the more established artists, those who are new to the dubstep world truly stamp their mark on the Mixtape. Expect to take notice of HENCH’s most recent signing, Mensah – currently the talk of Bristol after having his production featured in TV Series, CSI, and having productions lined up for future releases on Jakes’ label. Tek-One has also been making a big impact, and HENCH were lucky to pick up ‘Broken String’ – surely a future classic. Young-gun producer, Minus, adds flavour to the mix with his debut release, Nails.

With exciting and genre-breaking tracks dotted throughout this compilation, the HENCH Mixtape (Vol. 1) provides an accurate snapshot of the accomplishments of Jakes and his label to date. With such established and rising stars cued to make further releases on the label, HENCH will continue to remain at the forefront at the boundary-pushing Dubstep scene.

A devoted follower of techno-influenced drum & bass, Silent Witness adds a new edge & attitude, combining elements of the deep & uplifting within his tear-out dance floor productions. DARKESTRALEX001 One Man Jettison/Boundary Part 1 (Afterthought) // Decorum – Sabre Darkestral Excursions 12″ Vinyl
LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

This young man has been releasing tunes under Dylan and Tech Itch’s wing since 06 and they both have been hammering his releases over and over. Appearances from Spectrasoul, Sabre, Serum & Vapour paved the way for the heavily acclaimed Critical Sound compilation that saw label boss Kasra representing the ‘Future of D&B’ at Fabric’s 10th birthday and even guesting on BBC Radio 1. A Techno and Dubstep label, formed mid 2009. Project Squared aims to release 12” vinyl and download projects that are dance floor focused, that test new ground and that have depth as well as impact. We release music that covers the space between Techno and Dubstep as well as music that stays more firmly within those two genres. Created as a sub-label of Project Mooncircle due to a change in taste from one of the co-ordinators of that label, we were amazed to find two artists (Asusu and Furesshu) that were not signed such was the quality of their music. Still in early stages, the label aims to keep releasing high quality dance music, to gather more artists and to change and evolve as styles change and evolve… Most importantly as our own tastes change and evolve. Project Squared is a sub-label of Project Mooncircle and is affiliated with HHV.de. The label is co-run by Paul Cooper and Gordon Gieseking. Artwork and design is by Gordon Gieseking. Asusu – Now a dubstep producer with his sound tied to the deeper side of things, Asusu has moved from roots in hip hop and trip hop through to garage, dubstep and dub techno. Recently he has received radio play from various DJ’s on Sub FM, Dubstep FM and Reload Radio, and DJ’s himself (dubstep, garage & techno) mainly in Bath and Bristol. His tracks have received accolades in Mixmag and ATM (L.V. and XI’s top ten charts). He currently holds a residency at Rocksteady, Bath’s first monthly dubstep night, and also regularly co-hosts a show on Sub.fm alongside Trigga.

Born and bred in Croydon, 19-year old Justin Cantor, a.k.a Lost, is the latest addition to the acclaimed HENCH crew. Somewhat of a child prodigy, Justin started DJ-ing at an early age, and got his first set of decks aged 12. It was not long before Justin’s attention was caught by the burgeoning dubstep movement; inspired by the sounds of Skream and Digital Mystikz’s, he turned his hand to dubstep production early in 2008. Soon after, his debut release came out on Hatcha & N-Type’s ‘Croydon Dubheads’ EP. He recently was named alongside Emalkay and 16 Bit as one to watch in Radio 1xtra’s ‘Future Sound of Dubstep’. We’re proud to present Lost’s debut release on the Hench imprint and are sure that you’ll enjoy it.
A. IRONHIDE – Lost creates a seriously atmospheric mood from the start in Ironhide, building to a subtle drop of one mean reverbed wobbly bassline. A real creeper of a tune, the open hi-hat progresses throughout, giving way to a double time feel that’ll keep heads

AA. SLAUGHTERED – Flip over for another bass-led rhythm, from Lost. Pushing a different tone from the A side (yet no less menacing), ‘Slaughtered’ immediately surrounds you with its rolling filtered wobble. This is one futuristic sounding bass riff. An echoey drum loop helps create an ambience and suspense to this track. With such a distinct vibe, you’re guaranteed to have the crowd putting their screwface’s on when this gets dropped.

Arguably one of the top ranking dubstep / bass music releases of the past 12 months, and undeniably one of the most widely loved and heavily played, Joker’s epic synth track ‘Digidesign’ now gets the rework treatment from Om Unit, ramping up the rhythms and hitting the hard-bap pedal with extra weight to create a wobbling headnodder fix with a touch of off-centre (un)balance. SENSELESS011 You Know – Ghosttown ft Badness & Dajla Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl

Wonky dancefloor dancehall from Ghosttown featuring Badness, mix from DZ, Like his spectral namesake Simon Booth aka Ghosttown has spent the last few years obscured, half out of sight as a producer hiring out his futuristic beat-science to a string of heavy hitting MCs including Foreign Beggars here in the UK and a clutch of artists across the Atlantic including Guilty Simpson, Oh No, Frank and Dank and Dudley Perkins from the Dilla/Stones Throw axis of the hip hop spectrum.
His debut release started life like most of his productions, on a beat tape with another 80 or so one minute tracks, all vital snapshots charged with the excitement of what might happen with the right MC but there was something special about the original ‘Greezy’. It wires up squelching formant synths to insistent, minimal drums sounding like a 2010 UK-bass update to Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ but at 145 BPM with speaker damaging sub.
This devastating but unusual collision of sounds needed a versatile MC and Badness was top of the list. Known for his early work with Lava Unit and Terror Danjah as well as last year’s carnival smash ‘Message is Love’ with Jammer and Silverlink Birmingham born Badness’ star is on the rise. ‘You Know’ as the track became features his signature double time bashment/grime flow and a killer hook sung by cosmic-soul powerhouse Dajla. The Parisian born singer is a Radio Nova favourite who has collaborated with Wax Tailor, Foreign Beggars and celebrated hip hop poet Anthony Joseph. The resulting track is unmistakably UK but with a bashment flavour, wonky dancehall? The vinyl remix comes from DZ (Hot Flush/Tru Tiger) who delivers a mix that turbo charges the dancefloor elements of the track to come up with multi coloured low end work out. Senseless will release a Ghosttown album in summer 2010 featuring vocalists including Frank & Dank, Olivier Daysoul, Badness, YT, Navigator, Killa P and more. 2010 is the year the Ghost
comes to life.

Back in 2007, RAMP Recordings issued “Sagala” by Pattie Blingh & The Akebulan Five, which later spawned the 2562/Samiyam remix 10”. Pattie Blingh is Stones Throw & Ubiquity recording artist Georgia Anne Muldrow at her rawest and most creative, and after years of being out of press, we are pleased to press “Sagala” into your sweaty palm once again. Abrupt endings and loose timing give “Sagala” a truly unique sound, with an unrefined approach to rhythm smacking of a young RZA, while instrumental textures can recall anything from Funkadelic to The Cult, and the roll-jump-roll flow of her modes and moods is in the same addictive bracket as the best of Dilla, Madlib, and MF Doom., except they can’t even dream of competing on vocals. Her matchless delivery effortlessly pitches angrily-spat versification alongside angelic harmonic layers, with a lyrical content that marries late 60s English psychedelia to a stream of ebonic consciousness drawn from the same source as Marvin Gaye and Public Enemy.

Maryland resident MAXMILLION DUNBAR caught our attention on a desperately limited 7” last year on his own Future Times imprint. Swerving the current contrived reference points, B-Boy Max forges his own path mixing a kaleidoscope of boogie, electro, hip hop & analog soul. Max’s first EP for RAMP starts with Bare Feet clipping sparse soul loops with epic flourishes, Loveloop/Socket Bonus marrying cascading synths and 808’s, Wouldn’t Matter chops up a relentless boogie loops and epic disco strings, and WAVS draws the EP to a close with 80’s beat boxes and ramshackle synth lines.

LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

RUNTIMELP001 Messages from the Void – Elemental Runtime Records 12″ Vinyl x 3
Elemental’s imminent debut LP “Messages from the Void” is a collection of work from the last four years, spanning a range of styles, made using a combination of new and old technologies, including Elemental’s beloved modular synthesizer. He is proud to be able to present it to the world – a favour returned for all of the amazing music that has touched him throughout his years as a music listener and raver. Elemental’s fresh take on the dubstep sound has got both scene stalwarts and eclectic tastemakers singing his praises. Blending components of acid house, Detroit techno, ‘golden age’ drum & bass, vintage dubwise and African rhythm, his sound is rich in texture and musical heritage, yet remains eminently danceable. The North London based producer – Adam Wilson to his friends – started dabbling with production in 1994 with a Roland D5 and Atari ST while he was still at school. Soon after he invested in an Akai S2000 sampler, bought a PC, and the rest, as they say, is history. In the nineties he predominantly focused on making drum and bass and experimental electronica, eventually putting out his first drum and bass release as a white label off his own back. A few years later, together with schoolmate Dario Swade, they formed the breakbeat garage duo Elemental & 3D, releasing on their own label Runtime Records in 2002. A couple of years later after some time abroad, Elemental caught the likes of Search & Destroy on Rinse FM and instantly found the sound he had been looking for: dark, heavy, syncopated beats and bass. Since 2004, Elemental has been focused on bringing his newly developed sound to the masses. Combining dubbed out dirty bass lines with hypnotising rhythms, he has released on labels such as Destructive, Hotflush, Pitch Black, Halo Beats, and his own imprint Runtime, with his seminal track “Soulfire” one of the highlights on Tayo’s Fabriclive mix CD. He was officially the first person to do a live dubstep performance, mixing up and dubbing components of his productions using Ableton Live to rapturous audiences across the world: no set is ever the same twice.

Project Squared aims to release 12” vinyl and download projects that are dance floor focused, that test new ground and that have depth as well as impact. We release music that covers the space between Techno and Dubstep as well as music that stays more firmly within those two genres. Created as a sub-label of Project Mooncircle due to a change in taste from one of the co-ordinators of that label, we were amazed to find two artists (Asusu and Furesshu) that were not signed such was the quality of their music. Still in early stages, the label aims to keep releasing high quality dance music, to gather more artists and to change and evolve as styles change and evolve… Most importantly as our own tastes change and evolve. Project Squared is a sub-label of Project Mooncircle and is affiliated with HHV.de. The label is co-run by Paul Cooper and Gordon Gieseking. Artwork and design is by Gordon Gieseking. Asusu – Now a dubstep producer with his sound tied to the deeper side of things, Asusu has moved from roots in hip hop and trip hop through to garage, dubstep and dub techno. Recently he has received radio play from various DJ’s on Sub FM, Dubstep FM and Reload Radio, and DJ’s himself (dubstep, garage & techno) mainly in Bath and Bristol. Finish copy. Born and bred in Croydon, 19-year old Justin Cantor, a.k.a Lost, is the latest addition to the acclaimed HENCH crew. Somewhat of a child prodigy, Justin started DJ-ing at an early age, and got his first set of decks aged 12. It was not long before Justin’s attention was caught by the burgeoning dubstep movement; inspired by the sounds of Skream and Digital Mystikz’s, he turned his hand to dubstep production early in 2008. Soon after, his debut release came out on Hatcha & N-Type’s ‘Croydon Dubheads’ EP. He recently was named alongside Emalkay and 16 Bit as one to watch in Radio 1xtra’s ‘Future Sound of Dubstep’. We’re proud to present Lost’s debut release on the Hench imprint and are sure that you’ll enjoy it.
A. IRONHIDE – Lost creates a seriously atmospheric mood from the start in Ironhide, building to a subtle drop of one mean reverbed wobbly bassline. AA. SLAUGHTERED – Flip over for another bass-led rhythm, from Lost. Boka Records, UK Dubstep label has been in existence since 2005, one of the original purveyors of heavy bass music, and responsible for working with notable artists like Distance, Emalkay, The Others and more recently 16bit, who arrived on the scene with a bang earlier this year with their anthem “Chainsaw Calligraphy” (Featured on the “In The Death Car” EP – BOKA018).

UK born but now living in LA PropaTingz has his musical history in the Breaks scene, a long purveyor of the sound and a regular on the live scene he has more recently switched his style and has been directly influenced by artists like 16bit. He has big releases lined up and is beginning to cause quite a stir with his tracks featuring on Radio 1 etc…..def one to look out for. His remix was written over the course of a year, alot of blood sweat and tears have gone into it, and the listener will realise this when he/she hears it, devastating, pure and simple. Kanji Kinetic

UK based bass extremist, affiliated with labels like ElectroStimulation and Trouble & Bass, this boy knows how to make RIPPERS! He’s done what could be described as the most straight-up remix based on the original, given it a 4×4 rhythm and created the most hype tune for an age, support so far coming from Kid606, Akira Kiteshi, Warlock, Squire Of Gothos.

Utopia Music is a new Bristol based drum & bass label founded by Mako, a DJ/producer with longstanding residencies at Dissident in Bristol, Spectrum in London and promoter of the infamous Utopia parties that have played host to guests including Randall, Fierce, Break, dBridge, Sabre, Lynx, Storm, Squire and more since starting in 2006. Opening the label’s musical account, Bristol resident and long-time Utopia supporter Break (Symmetry) steps up to deliver Natural Progression. On the reverse, dBridge (Exit Records) remixes a track created by label boss Mako and Andy Skopes (Good Looking) back in 2006 that remains unreleased despite a large amount of DJ support and an appearance on Fierce & Break’s cover-mount mix CD for ATM Magazine. Usually when we think of Italy we think of designer labels, opera, fast cars, fine art and fine foods. Italian based Subculture Records however are looking to add firin’ drum & bass to that list as they present their third release from label owner Maztek and UK producers Sleeper Cell. Fresh from releasing killer plates on Hessle Audio, Subway and Audio Freakz, Romania’s TRG touches down on Immerse to deliver this highly-accomplished 12”. First up is Time is Now, kicking off with samples of dystopian android speech mixed up with a simple flute lick that gives no warning of the impending carnage! Snipped up breaks collide with whiplash-inducing bass action and shuddering subs to make a guaranteed mess of any dancefloor. Flipside, TRG gets more reflective with They Know, as wistful chords drift across the intro like echoes of some long-forgotten rave, before dropping into a post-UKG boom-bass workout. Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. INMD005 Battlecat / Grapefruit – Donnie Dubson Influenza Media 12″ Vinyl
Germany has seen the evolution of many successful labels and artists over time, including (The) Panacea, Current Value, Twintone and Blu Saphir Recordings. But more recently, Digital Colours and Fokuz LTD artist, Donnie Dubson has stepped into the fray, joining the roster of immaculate talent on one of Belgium’s most well-known chill-out labels, Influenza Media. Coming a long way from his first release on Have-A-Break Recordings in 2006, Donnie’s masterful production has landed him spots on compilations and podcasts by the likes of Phunkfiction Recordings, Hospital Records and Knowledge Magazine, while collaborating with such artists as Stunna and Andy Sim. The fifth instalment on Influenza Media features two very different but “feel good” pieces. Battlecat is lush with its’ subtle, warm bass lines, while Grapefruit pummels forward with its’ bass-heavy kicks and sweeping pad melodies. If I were to speak to Donnie myself, I’d be the first to comment on his magnificent arrangement of the breakdown on both tunes. The halftime break in Grapefruit is very welcoming, and it really does a great job working its’ way towards the dance floor for the second drop. Battlecat uses a more traditional technique, using bass stabs to push the second drop into full throttle.

BODY&SOUL, best known for their productions on Viper Recordings and Bad Company, need no further introduction. FOURWARD is one of the hottest and most sought after new producer collective around at the moment. Their first digital releases on Subsonik Sound were all regulars at Beatport Top 10 sales chart for weeks, competing with established artists´ tracks by Chase&Status and Noisia. BODY&SOUL and FOURWARD decided to join forces just recently and the feedback on their work so far couldn’t prove any more, that this was an excellent decision. IBR003 Hard Boogie For Dub Swingers EP (Part Two) – Relocate Iberian 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The new release from Lisbon/Barcelona based Iberian Records sees the second part of Relocate’s “Hard Boogie For Dub Swingers EP” hit wax. First up are Lisbon’s Kuduro warriors Buraka Som Sistema with a remix of Relocate’s “Dot Dot Dash”. Clever micro samples from the original rub are married to an absolutely slamming b-line to create a full on floor-filler full of original flava which very successfully merges UK bass to the Portuguese sound. On the flip we have “Origins” from Relocate; which sees their unique stripped down sub-heavy bassline boogie to full effect. Relocate come up trumps once again with a full on roller of a track with trademark gliding bass dives and punchy stabs from a classic sidestepper Zed Bias sample and a very much house meets dubstep type of vibe. Dub Police drop an absolute peach of a single here from Birmingham’s ever rising star Emalkay. This side see’s the massive ‘When I Look At You’ get a release, and with support from Caspa, Benga, Skream, N-Type & just about anyone who is anyone battering the living daylights out of this tune its not hard to see why this has now got to the anthem status it so thoroughly deserves. A real epic intro with luscious pads and pitched vocals, before an absolutely ferocious drop of squelching bass and stomping beats. So big, its criminal! Finish copy. Ital Tek (Alan Myson) is back with his second release of 2009: Mako EP, proving again that he is carving his own sound within the spectrum of bass music. His busy international touring schedule and releases on the infamous Planet Mu label have cemented his reputation as one of the most inventive producers working under the Dubstep banner today. Following on from 2008’s acclaimed album Cyclical and 2009’s Massive Error this is the debut release for his own imprint Atom River. Over 4 tracks it sees Ital Tek once again perfectly bridging the gap between Dubstep, Techno and Electronica whilst retaining strong dance floor energy. Mako opens the record with one of Ital Tek’s warmest and thickest sounding tunes to date. Driving fuzz bass and a searing twisted lead push the track onwards over a bed of glorious chord progressions. Chemical Temple stomps in with a lurching half step rhythm and thick cutting synth lines before breaking down in a pulsating double time bass driven mesh of tight flickering percussion and distant ghostly melodies breaking through into the foreground. Manhattan sets things off with a bang on the B side. Sharp cold metallic breaks drop into a heavy driving bass throb. The drums cut through the track with shattering precision allowing the bass to whip out the solid rhythm, whilst again complimenting Ital Tek’s knack for melody. Topaz closes the record with a hard hitting Techno – Dubstep crossover. Pounding kicks and crisp percussion swell over the course of 5 minutes into a crescendo of swirling synths before dropping finally into an epic rinse out. This record once again shows Ital Tek’s ability to bring both heaviness and beauty to music that is as equally suited in a club as it is sound tracking a late night drive.

About Lord Cry Cry: After working in a steel mill and disregarding encouragement to become a Woolworths manager Lord Cry Cry, born Chris Donaghue, studied Law at Oxford University then Clinical Psychology. He worked as a psychologist in Kent then moved to Berlin to write a novel, join a band, build a snowman, schlep coal, and collect bottles. Just because he could. He completed a Masters degree in sound design and classical music composition in Berlin this year. This is his first solo vinyl release, after providing many a musical piece for various short European films.

White Label, Black sleeve. One of the most exciting record on these pages this week comes from London’s Bok Bok, offering up two refixes of Crazy Cousins ‘Bongo Jam’ and Dre Skull’s ‘I Want You’. The cliche “One to watch” was made for this fella, from his potent mixtapes mashing grime, house, garage and UK Bass, to his forthcoming tracks for Dress 2 $weat, Bok Bok is dangerously onto something. On the A-side we’ve got a refit of Dre Skull’s club anthem ‘I Want You’, engaging with elements of tougher NYC and Chicago house and locked into heavyweight UKF bass with a proper bashment fired flavour. On the flipside he rewires Crazy Cousins’ infectious ‘Bongo Jam’ with a superbly tempered blend of dirty chromed synth timbres and cool rushing snare rolls executed with a knowing restraint, built to tease the dancefloor. Marking the tenth release on HENCH, enter production trio, Giant – composed of Enei, Ekta and Nersa – these boys have been killing it on the dubstep front from the heart of St Petersburg for the last couple of years now. Here they bring us a bit of their dark Russian vibes in ‘Drumstick’ and ‘Swoosh’. A – DRUMSTICK – Squeaking synths and vocodered SFX are the order of the day in ‘Drumstick’, and the tune drops into a wobbly b-line number with plenty of grimy beats and retro sounding sampling. Giant keep it stripped back for the rest of the ‘Drumstick’, with great effect. With heavy subs and intensely dark bass, expect to be blown away by the sheer intensity of this ‘Drumstick’. SUB005 Dub Sessions I – Shed SubSolo 12″ Vinyl
Displaying his excellent production skills within techno, Shed moves over to straight up dub sessions with the ‘Dub Shed Sessions I’ on SubSolo. Fierce bass meditative drops circles around the excellent atmospheric keyboard patterns, combined in a way that sounds both fresh and unique, but still rating 100% on Shed’s own trademark sound. Leaning towards a bit of contemporary straight dub techno with ‘Dub Shed – STP Remix’, the focus is on a more direct and present take on the tracks progression, rather than inviting the listener into an already set-up wall of sound. Shaking off the melody from the centre, the spacious patterns reveal themselves as the extreme basslines comes in, removing all doubt about the direction of the track. In a manic attempt to fuse half step, electro booty bass, niche and primates into one coherent whole, Geiom came up with the delicious mongrel known as Bubbles. Wonky synths collide with tuff drum patterns in a tense, restless fashion which peaks with a kind of homage to the Midlands favourite underground genre, Bassline house. There’s a kind of psychedelic terror at the heart of this tune but its way too playful to ever become truly menacing….Both these tunes demonstrate the high standard of musical creativity that is coming out of Nottingham right now, but give no indication of an easy to identify style. We set things off here with the dub inspired “Cheeba” which moves neatly with it’s percussive groove wrapped with a deep bouncy sub line, original step and sound clash style stabs to compliment creating a big dancehall vibe. We would be lying if we said we weren’t a bit bias when it comes to all things D.Kay, so it should likely come as no shock or surprise that when asked the question ‘Do you think D.Kay’s newest 12” out on Brigand is a hit?” the answer that we have no choice to reply with is a resounding YES! The deep, low end bass of ‘The Greatest Thing’, with DJ Lee, has just enough grit to it rock the damncefloor as welll as Radio 1. The percussion on this one gets an A+ for sure, with an honorable mention going to the double claps. Lastly, a half time breakdown always does a track good, and this one is without a doubt no exception. Raw.full joins D.Kay on ‘Sequential Circuit’ but this one is a 180 of the flip – tearing amens, hard hitting bass make this one an amen smasher – and it’s this tracks completely different direction that make not only it, but this 12” in general, solid all around. D.Kay does a great job at bringing it rough. Fact.

Appleblim first met Ramadanman and Deapoh (of Barefiles.com) at FWD>>, DMZ and various other dubstep nights when they were barely old enough to get into the clubs. Blim picked up Ramadanman’s debut release on Deapoh’s Bare Dubs imprint and started spreading it across dancefloors in a healthy pasting. A friendship was struck up. And when we first heard ‘Humber’ we were floored; the phasing synths, rolling riddim and deep subs summed up everything we love at Apple Pips. This boy is on fire at the moment with house, funky, drum n bass and dubstep all getting the Ramadizzle touch. EX7001 Yin Yang – Excision Ft. DZ EX7 12″ Vinyl
No doubt the majority of you will have already heard of Excision, one of the leading lights of the North American dubstep scene. His studio mixes have received over 60,000 downloads from one file sharing site alone, while his Rottun Recordings label regularly tops the sales charts, stacking up thousands of sales for each release on Beatport alone! Recently his official remix of Pendulum’s ‘Showdown’ brought the sound of filthy dubstep to the masses and has clocked up over 120,000 plays on the band’s Myspace page. Meanwhile DJs such as BBC 1Xtra’s Mistajam have been all over his signature sound. With so much attention from clubland and the media alike, Excision thought it was time to start a new imprint, geared to release the very biggest of the tracks in his record box. Teaming up with Infectious PR who will be managing and promoting the label on his behalf, Excision is ready to kick off EX7 (pronounced Ex-Seven, for those not in the know) with a pair of downright bangers. ‘Yin Yang’ featuring DZ is straight up LFO based dubstep at it’s finest. Featuring an ambient intro that lulls you into a false sense of security before smacking you round the face with a bassline so big it could be seen from space (that’s a ridiculous thing to say, don’t think we don’t know how ludicrous our own press releases sound). This track is also rumoured to appear on Snoop Dogg’s forthcoming ‘Dubstep LA’ mixtape, so watch out for some serious commercial crossover business. Flip over and ‘Obvious’ takes a surprisingly less obvious approach than you might think. Drawing out electro influences and blending them expertly with Excision’s unique hard-hitting style ‘Obvious’ is packed with energy for the dance floor but with plenty to keep you interested at home. Anyone who likes to mix up electro with dubstep should be slipping this into their sets.

Sickness from Goth-Trad on Mala’s label, with perhaps his best twelve to date. ‘Dark Path’ on the A is an exercise in dub technology, thick slabs of bass overlaid with eastern melodies and mad FX. Percussion and snares are treated with heavy delays, pinging around like auditory hallucinations, building a framework upon which to hang the wistful chords and gentle flute topline. Very limited edition Finish copy. Once upon a time, there was a band called The Cure, who had a front man named Robert Smith. Robert was an emotional being, who was always looking to test his boundaries and search out new experiences. After touring the Germany in the early 80’s with his band of eyeliner encrusted over-emotional Goth-men, Robert began a non-sexual but intensely intimate relationship with Florian Schneider, front man of Electro forefathers, Kraftwerk. The unlikely couple decided to experiment with the then new science of gene splicing. After a few horrific failed attempts, they finally managed to successfully cross their DNA into the vessel of a baby boy. Months past, and it became disturbingly apparent that they two men, who at the time were at the peaks of their careers, had created a being of pure evil. They decided to enlist the help of the 4’2 purple sex-pest Prince to drown the young baby in a sea of colours and tears, and try as hard as they can to move on with their lives alone, ever trying to forget the horrific experiences the child had graced upon their lives. For many years, the baby’s soul circled the earth, crying pixels and watching women get undressed in locker rooms and stuff, for he is just a soul, and invisible to the human eye, and can get away with that kind of thing. The child found out there was a way to come back from the dead in some kind of Hellraiser type puzzle themed ritual, and hark, the boy (who was now a man) did indeed rise from the dead, and yes, he did once again walk the earth with the sole intent of wrong-doing. ONUDP53 Excercising – Lee Perry Vs Horsepower Productions On-U Sound 12″ Vinyl
After the Moody Boyz epic dubstep fix of ‘God Smiled’, the dancehall tune-up of ‘International Broadcaster’, and Kode 9’s funky style workout on ‘Yellow Tongue’, this latest episode in the Lee Perry bespoke remix series adds yet another twist to the musical path, with a hair-raising interpretation from Horsepower Productions. Seeping into halflight zones of bruised ambient dub, over the course of six minutes ‘Exercising’ builds like a distant tropical storm, it’s dense clouds gathering ominously on the horizon while Lee Perry’s shamanic spiritual abstractions add to the sense of heavy weather ahead. Built from similar strands of the low end gene pool as Kode 9 & The Spaceape’s ‘Sine Of The Times’, Horsepower’s brooding view of ‘Exercising’ discards dubstep’s recognised rhythmic frameworks in favour of a largely beat-free excursion, relying instead on swelling subs and oscillating bassline pulses for it’s unstoppable low tempo momentum. Tapping congas, echoing woodblocks and skeletal skittering noises dart insect-like across the mix, while the droning tabla and reverbed melodic guitar figures of Adrian Sherwood’s original production maintain an air of dread occidental mystery. With an equally massive no-vocal take on the flip, this is a simultaneously skin-chilling and oppressively close body heat raising journey to the heart of darkness, and yet another must-have release from the ever mighty On-U Sound.
