STHoldings: End of year review 2011

Posted 21 December 2011 | By | Categories: news, reviews, tracks, video | No Comments

So that’s another year almost done and with it come the inevitable top this, top that lists. Here are details of how  STHoldings distributed labels/artists featured in the end of year lists from around the web.

RA Poll: Top 50 tracks of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1422

46. Maurice Donovan - Babeh [SSSSS]
The man formerly known as Ramadan cuts up a classic into something resembling house.

22. Peverelist - Dance Til the Police Come [Hessle Audio]
Jungle-inspired-swinging post-dubstep—or in other words, a Bristol-based genius at the top of his game.

19. Scuba - Adrenalin [Hotflush]
A lot of 2011′s big tracks inspired as much bickering as they did dancefloor mayhem, and Scuba’s only single under his usual moniker was no different. Following in his new, looser, and housier direction, “Adrenalin” is eight minutes of rigid repetition, incessantly catchy basslines and a strobing vocal sample. But the song’s lopsided progression is the important part, because three minutes in it melts away into one of the year’s most decadent breakdowns, several minutes of building synth washes and whooshes that unashamedly ascend to the highest of the gurning trance heavens. The song’s title might imply a certain energy, but we all know there’s a different chemical driving this one.

17. Pangaea - Hex [Hemlock]
Pangaea’s “Hex” was perfectly fine for the first 86 seconds. Pretty swell even. A bit of rhythmic trickery, a nice organic bed for it all to sit on. Then there was this: “Buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh kut buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh kut be booooooooooooy be boooooOOOOOOOoy.” It was at that moment that “Hex” became one of the most exciting songs we’d heard all year. That Kevin McAuley had further tricks up his sleeve later on is icing on the cake of course, but it’s also why we kept coming back to it throughout the year.

10. Unknown Artist - Sicko Cell [Swamp 81]
Be honest: When you finally heard “Sicko Cell” in full, you were a little bit underwhelmed. (If you even bothered to track it down at all.) There’s not much to say about the rhythm. There’s hardly a drop. Even the melody—if you can call the atmospheres a full-fledged melody—don’t inspire much poetry. There is a vocal, though. Perhaps you remember? It’s the one about cocaine powder. The one that drove you mad in a club this year trying to figure out where it was from. The one that Loefah, Oneman and others couldn’t stop playing. The one that landed this tune in our top 10 tracks of the year.

01. Blawan - Getting Me Down [White Label]
The whole story behind “Getting Me Down” is a bit corny really. I went out on New Years Eve—like everyone else does, and I did the whole thing, had a good time, left quite early and came back home and kind of just sat at my computer all night/morning. I had these disco loops I had been working on that I wasn’t really doing much with, and I started messing around with the a cappella and then something just clicked. I did it in about four hours and kind of forgot about it.
This one dropped off the radar for me a little bit, because I actually thought it was one of the weirder things I had written. I never really grasped the catchy vocal properly until I put it into context. A few guys said, “Yeah, I really like that tune,” but nothing more than anything else I sent before. The first person to get anything from me is usually Ben UFO. Ben gave it the first play on Rinse FM, and somebody then ripped it from the radio stream and uploaded it to YouTube—something that seems happen all the time now. That played an integral part of getting the tune in people’s heads really.
I’d been playing the tune out a lot, and it had got an OK reaction. I mean, I had always thought of it as filler for a set anyway. But once the YouTube clip was up, a lot of people in clubs knew what it was, even though it was only three or so weeks after I had finished making it. It’s really strange how things move so fast.

19. Instra:mental - Resolution 653 [NonPlus+]
The problem with Instra:mental? They release too much good music. “Problem” is the wrong word, but such has been the standard of Alex Green and Damon Kirkham’s output these past couple of years it’s become tough to ruminate on each new offering in isolation, fully appreciating the true extent of its merits. They’ve spoilt us, basically—and none more so than on their debut album, Resolution 653. Barely pausing for a fag break across its 13 tracks, the pair coaxed jaw-clenching amounts of warmth and grit out of their machines, coming off like the natural heirs to Drexciya’s electro throne.

RA Poll: Top 20 compilations of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1424

20. Various Artists - Mosaic Vol. 1 [Exit]
A lot of the tunes on Mosaic were earmarked as singles for Exit. But it became really clear that I wasn’t going to have the schedule to get everything out, so a compilation seemed like a good idea. In the same way as the [Autonomic] podcast, putting this music together served as a platform for people to get their heads around it. If the tracks are all in dribs and drabs it sort of goes unnoticed. I think compilations and the podcast kind of helped identify this group of artists producing this music. I suppose that’s where the title Autonomic came from. It’s funny that it became a genre name sort of, because that was never the intent.

14. Various Artists - Back & 4th [Hotflush]
I wasn’t directly involved in the process of choosing tracks for Back & 4th, but the goal was to present a gradual evolution of the label’s sound over the last few years. It was also an opportunity to bring in a few newcomers who provided a clear manifestation of that same evolution, with Roska, Boddika, dBridge, and FaltyDL adding their own flavors to the mix. I was also glad that Scuba picked up my own track, “Axis.” It’s the first one I made that I was really satisfied with. My favorite track on the compilation, though, was Boxcutter’s “LOADtime.” He’s always been really inspiring to me, as a veteran producer whose talent and skill really set him apart. – Incyde, Label Manager

10. Various Artists - 116 & Rising  [Hessle Audio]
We had the idea for the compilation at the end of 2010 and started putting the wheels in motion soon after that. We approached some people we hadn’t worked with before as well as asking those we had if they were interested in the concept too. Luckily for us, everybody was. In terms of the name, the three of us were on the train coming back from our distributors after talking about the project, thinking of titles. I’d been re-listening to Experience by the Prodigy a week or two earlier and one of the tracks on there is called “Everybody in the Place (155 & Rising).” So 116 & Rising (referring to the BPM of the slowest track in the comp) is a bit of a joke, but at the same time summarises the project and a lot of what we’re about nicely.

RA Poll: Top 20 labels of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1421

20. NonPlus+
Nonplus+ heads Alex Green and Damon Kirkham simply claim to release what they like—no matter the genre. That’s what everyone says…until the distributor steps in. Luckily for us, Green and Kirkham didn’t get the memo, and spent the year reaffirming their pan-genre approach by putting Actress’ blurry electronica next to Lowtec’s tired house, and Boddika’s breezin’ electro up against the Neil Landstrumm and JD Twitch collab Salsa Apocalypso. Add Instra:mental’s own brutal and beautiful Resolution 653 to the mix, and you have yourself a wonderful and confusing year

19. Idle Hands
Saunter down Stokes Croft in Bristol with some cash in your pocket and you’ll likely end up trawling the racks of Idle Hands. The label of the same name was started up in 2009 while Chris Farrell was still employed a bit further up the street by the erstwhile Rooted Records. Much like the stock in both these stores, the label hasn’t been wedded to any one genre. In 2011 that’s meant an impeccable string of singles from artists like AnD, Kowton, Kevin McPhee, Szare and Outboxx which have run the gamut between charcoal techno and jazzy house.

05. Hotflush
With a hefty label compilation occupying the first quarter of the year and a busy 2010 behind him, it could have been a year of consolidation for Scuba’s Hotflush. Instead, the imprint pushed forward with new talents George FitzGerald, Braille) and old Paul Woolford & Psycatron). Looking over the names that released on Hotflush in retrospect, and things seem obvious. (Err… of course Sepalcure and Sigha go together!) But it speaks to the platform that Scuba has created that artists from house, techno and bass music even think to send him tracks—and that he finds a way to work all of them into his DJ sets.

94. Sepalcure “Pencil Pimp” [Hotflush]
As Sepalcure, Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma slid in right before the whistle to remind us that electronic music devices can do more than evocatively sputter and fritz. “Pencil Pimp” whirls on a machine-lathed spindle of Chicago footwork, capturing a feeling of curtailed tension and lurking danger with its soulful vocal clips and warm synth pads. There are no gestures of rebellion or subversion, only an argument for well-made music at a time when it might seem besieged. “Pencil Pimp” demonstrates why we feel so comfortable breaking the mold: We know someone will come along who feels passionate enough to cast it again, tempered even stronger. –Brian Howe

Sepalcure – Pencil Pimp / I’m Alright (album single) by Hotflush

86. Blawan “Getting Me Down” [self-released]
Blawan first drew attention with tracks that wielded wild drums like a toddler banging on household objects, but his most powerful moment this year came when he reined in those tendencies for a straightforward house thumper.  A lot of the impact in “Getting Me Down” comes fromthat Brandy vocal, squeezed and wedged into a galloping beat that recontextualizes the R&B slow-jam original as a sugary, hyped-up rush that’s dangerously contagious. Released discreetly after months of dubplate domination, the track’s landing was titanic: it was impossible to walk around record stores in London in May without hearing it blaring from speakers, or go to a club night without it being rinsed at least once. For the first half of the year, “Getting Me Down” was an event, and listening back to it at year’s end, it’s easy to see why. So few tracks combined candyfloss rave, UK garage hysteria, and dubby dread (check the growling basslines) into something that sounded so universal yet so subversive, helping to kick off a new impulse in the bass music world that was all about house. –Andrew Ryce

47. Sepalcure ‘Sepalcure’ [Hotflush]
In an interview with The Guardian last month, Hotflush boss Scuba named “Outside”, the closing song from bass music duo Sepalcure’s self-titled debut LP, as the song he would want to open his next DJ set with. It’s a strange choice for a set opener– “Outside” is beatless, essentially four minutes of drone and clipped voices– but then again, not much about Sepalcure makes sense in the constant forward-thinking climate of bass music circa 2011. As an album, it doesn’t really do anything new, and a few of the signifiers that Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma plunder onSepalcure were, to some, reaching their expiration dates– specifically, the use of pitched vocals that Stewart liberally splayed on his album this year as Machinedrum, Room(s). Part of what makes Sepalcure such a deeply enjoyable listen is how familiar it all is, pogoing between juke-derived textures, IDM’s click-clack machinery, misty pastoral ambience, and house music’s 4/4 insistence while weaving a web of shivering romance that still manages to move bodies. Above all else, Sepalcure offers a necessary reminder that, yeah, change is good, but elegant, refined perfection also has its place. –Larry Fitzmaurice

47: PAUL WOOLFORD & PSYCATRON ‘STOLEN’ (HOTFLUSH)
Almost five years on from ‘Erotic Discourse’, someone, somewhere did 2011 a massive favour and relit the fire under Paul Woolford’s arse, prompting the Leeds veteran to roll back the years and deliver some of his all-time best material. ‘Razor Blade’ and his remix of T. Williams and Terri Walker’s ‘Heartbeat’ were sublime, but this colossal collaboration with Psycatron on Hotflush simply took the biscuit.

Paul Woolford and Psycatron – Stolen [HFT018] by Hotflush

40: OLD APPARATUS SIDE A PART 1 (DEEP MEDI)
Old Apparatus’s mysterious debut – 20 minutes of music spread across two untitled sides of vinyl – is something we recommend enjoying as a whole, but there’s no doubt that the first distinct movement of the A-side packs the fiercest punch. It sounds like UK garage gone industrial, its perfectly swung rhythm riven by distortion and an overloaded darkside bassline. The end, it suggests, is very much nigh.

39: TEETH ‘SHAWTY’ (502 RECORDINGS)
Smoked-out drum machine pop from Helsinki’s TEETH that suited 502′s darkroom aesthetic (see also: Jay Weed, Fis-T) to a tee.

Oneman’s 502 Label: Teeth – Shawty/Shawty [FaltyDL Remix] 502003 by stholdings

24: KAHN ‘LIKE WE USED TO’ (PUNCH DRUNK)
Kahn’s beautifully crafted debut single bowled us over, with its vocals chopped into the syllables of pure energy and longing – “feminine pressure” writ large – and strapped to the most lithe and undeniable dubstep rhythm we heard all year.

Kahn ‘Like We Used To’ (Punch Drunk Records) by Punch Drunk Records

20: BLAWAN ‘GETTING ME DOWN’ (WHITE LABEL)
This year, Blawan expanded on the promise of his 2010 debut single ‘Fram’ to become one of the UK’s most in-demand, and refreshingly, heaviest producers, proving that you can still go hard in the paint without resorting to dubstep or electro-house cliches. He showed off his lighter touch, however, on this vinyl only edit of Brandy’s ‘Wanna Be Down’; it’s still his finest track to date.

17: PANGAEA ‘WON’T HURT’ (HESSLE AUDIO)
Pretty much everything Pangaea touches turns to gold, but nothing gleamed so bright in 2011 as ‘Won’t Hurt’ – a rude-as-all-fuck but masterfully honed onslaught of scything synths, choppy drums and outrageous sub-bass.

Won’t Hurt by pangaea

13: UNKNOWN ARTIST ‘SICKO CELL’ (SWAMP81)
I’m the information… co-caine powder. Say no more.

07: ROCKWELL ‘ARIA’ (CRITICAL AUDIO)
The most atmospheric, emotive and dynamic drum’n’bass track of the year, and an instant classic – wrought out of fierce, fanatically detailed drum programming, ghost-traces of This Mortal Coil’s ‘Song To The Siren’ and impeccably timed, gut-skewering bass stabs.

42: 2562 FEVER (WHEN IN DOUBT)
Fever is a concept album with a very simple but rigorous set of rules – every nuance and texture is half-inched from disco records produced from the mid 70’s to the early 80’s, with producer Dave Huismans’ own birth year of 1979 acting as a temporal pivot. The results don’t sound like disco at all – beyond a certain joyous, celebratory quality – but rather a new kind of dance music; dynamic, shapeshifting and irrepressible.

5. Hotflush
If you’re wondering why we think Hotflush is one of the best labels of the year, then you are not reading XLR8R enough. Let’s start with the obvious reasons: Sepalcure’s debut full-length topped Hotflush’s year off with a stunning display of dense post-dubstep, George FitzGerald dropped two more solid singles of R&B-infused garage, and label head Paul Rose (a.k.a. Scuba) unleashed one of 2011′s biggest tunes, “Adrenalin.” Meanwhile, Praveen Sharma of Sepalcure dropped four tracks of luscious, rolling garage with his A Meaning EP as Braille and Lando Kal stepped outside his usual role as the taller half of Lazer Sword long enough to deliver two of his most impressive solo cuts to date, “Further” and “Time Out.” Big, soulful tunes, consistently top-notch output, and a proven ability to not only shift within the ever-moving bass-music scene, but, more importantly, the power to influence it, made Hotflush a force yet again in 2011. Glenn Jackson

4. SWAMP81
Second acts can be hard to come by in electronic music, particularly in the lightning-quick environs of London’s hardcore continuum, but DMZ co-founder Loefah doesn’t seem to be having much of a problem with it. Since founding the SWAMP81 imprint in 2009, he’s quickly assembled a roster that functions as a sort of all-star team for upfront, low-end-heavy sounds. After serving up massive tunes like Addison Groove’s “Footcrab” and Ramadanman’s “Work Them” in 2010, the vinyl-only label stepped it up even further in 2011, dropping releases from FaltyDL, Zed Bias (both solo and as one-half of the Funkbias collaboration with Funk Butcher), and another single from Addison Groove. SWAMP81 was also home to records from Boddika—establishing him as a solo artist and one of the year’s biggest producers. Perhaps most notably, the label (eventually) released “Sicko Cell,” one of 2011′s most anticipated tunes. (The song may not have quite lived up to the hype, but it did snag the #13 slot on our countdown of the year’s best tracks.) Even as folks begin to wonder about the state of so-called bass music and attempt to figure out exactly where it’s heading, there appears to be no shortage of quality music coming from the SWAMP81 camp. Shawn Reynaldo

47. Boddika
 “2727″
 (SWAMP81)
Even in a year when Instra:mental, the duo he’s been a part of for more than a decade, released a widely acclaimed and sonically adventurous new album, the ascent of Boddika as a solo artist could not be stopped. Tracks like “2727″—with its thunderous drums, acid lines, and unapologetically raw aesthetic—are the reason why. Shawn Reynaldo

2727 by Boddika

46. French Fries
”Champagne”
(ClekClekBoom)
Legend has it that Claude VonStroke wanted to sign “Champagne” to his Dirtybird label, but young French producer French Fries politely declined and kept the tune for his own ClekClekBoom imprint. True or not, it’s quite the story, not that this tune, which uses white space as effectively as it employs snappy drums and eerie synths, needed much help finding its way into DJs’ playlists. Shawn Reynaldo

French Fries – Champagne / Hugz ft. Bambounou [CCB001] – Out Now! (12″ Ltd Ed Vinyl) by ClekClekBoom

44. Sepalcure
”Pencil Pimp”
(Hotflush)
Sepalcure seems to compose bass music on the most loose, yet subtle terms, and the pair’s unique perspective on the genre has continued to yield stellar results. Somehow both tribal and smooth in the same breath, “Pencil Pimp” immediately stood out during the course of the duo’s debut LP, mostly due to the sheer weight infused into its post-happy sound—think Mount Kimbie with slightly bigger balls (and maybe some more drugs in the mix). Glenn Jackson

43. Blawan
”Getting Me Down”
Sampling generously from Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down” is kind of a no-brainer (whether or not you’re willing to admit it, we all loved that song), but Blawan did much more than simply edit Brandy’s half-forgotten hit—he propelled it into the club of some distant planet with monstrous percussion and whatever the hell that reverse low-end sound is. Wherever it comes from, it’s strange, unnerving, and just about perfect. Glenn Jackson

26. Instra:Mental
 “When I Dip”
 (NonPlus)
2011 found veteran UK duo Instra:mental completing a very large left turn, essentially abandoning drum & bass for old-school electro, heavy low-end, and lots of 808 drum sounds. Ahead of the acclaimed Resolution 653, the pair dropped “When I Dip,” an undeniable tune that also folds some Southern-style booty bass into the outfit’s new sonic formula. It proved to be quite the effective opening salvo, both for Instra:mental’s re-emergence and Boddika’s big year as a solo artist. Shawn Reynaldo

Instra:mental Resolution 653 LP Sampler ‘Thomp’ / ‘When I Dip’ [NONPLUS013] by stholdings

24. Julio Bashmore
 “Ribble to Amazon”
(3024)
There’s a line somewhere between soulful, UK-style house and anthemic, almost cheesy, bangers that can be dangerous. However, when walked just right, that line is perfect for the dancefloor. Julio Bashmore knows exactly how to walk it, and “Ribble to Amazon” is one of his finest journeys on that limb—the pads are warm, the vocals are just right, and those breakdowns are too good to be true. Glenn Jackson

JULIO BASHMORE RIBBLE TO AMAZON (3024-011B) by 3024world

18. Teeth
”Shawty”
 (502)
Like many selections on Oneman’s 502 imprint, there’s not a whole lot to “Shawty.” Listening to the song, it quickly becomes apparent just how much space there is in the production, a factor that’s just as important as any of the actual sonic elements being put to use. That said, each of those elements is just about perfect. Utilizing low-slung drum beats, haunting synth melodies, and a sultry vocal sample, Finnish producer Teeth not only put himself on the bass-music map, he also created one of the year’s most memorable tunes. Shawn Reynaldo

13. Unknown
”Sicko Cell”
 (SWAMP81)
It’s amazing that when “Sicko Cell”—undoubtedly the most hyped tune of the year—was finally released in late July, the world was essentially already over it. In a world where anticipation grows exponentially online and DJs are mastering YouTube rips in order to play the latest tune, especially one created “anonymously” (it’s an open secret that Joy Orbison produced the track) and only passed along to a select few, “Sicko Cell” simply ran out of steam. Nevertheless, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a monster of a club track. With a stripped-down aesthetic and eerie vibe, the song is rather similar to Teeth’s “Shawty,” but the twisted, Burial-esque vocal samples put “Sicko Cell” over the top. Shawn Reynaldo

3. Scuba
 “Adrenalin”
 (Hotflush)
Scuba made a trance song. (Polite company might refer to it as progressive house, but we’re going to call a spade a spade.) On the heels of “Loss,” which he released earlier in the earlier under his SCB moniker (and already nabbed #41 on this list), it was apparent that Paul Rose was interested in exploring new sound palettes, but something this, well, epic was not really expected. While the notion of one of the most influential and boundary-pushing dubstep producers of the past decade making a tune that Sasha would play (yes, that happened) sounds like some kind of nightmare on the surface, it doesn’t change the fact that “Adrenalin” is not only an excellent track, but also a production that completely resets exactly what it is that Scuba is all about. Containing one grandiose and ethereal breakdown—not to mention a series of smaller ups and downs along the way—”Adrenalin” certainly plays to the dancefloor, particularly dancers looking to lose their shit once the beat comes back in and the song’s chunky bassline takes hold. The synths are washy and warm, the sounds employed are impeccably clean, and yes, the track is absolutely, undeniably a bit cheesy. It’s also eight of the most enjoyable minutes of music we heard all year (more or less on repeat, to be honest), and we can’t wait to hear what Scuba comes up with next. Shawn Reynaldo

As a taster for the album it was also released as a limited edition coloured vinyl sampler and that was sold out in just a few weeks! For the remix we have the new Hungarian production talent ZERO METHOD stepping in. The potential of his talent is extreme as you will hear when you are listening to this killer remix. A very very tight production and a fave for dj’s like Ed Rush, Dose, Nymfo and alot more for some time now! As every dnb head must know the Budapest drum’n bass scene is creating some of the most innovative sounds out there. With guys like Jade, Mindscape, Zero Method and Chris.SU pushing eachother to build even better sounds than the next. Jade and Mastif with their new track for Citrus are a good example of the gems that come out of the constant wish to top eachother sounds. New D&B Promos

DIS046 – Nymfo / Cern & Nymfo – Recollection / Desert Heat – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Here we present a mighty talented D & B export from Holland in the form of Nymfo; His tracks can be frequently heard in drum and sets almost everywhere from everyone and we’re sure that the featured A side “Recollection” that he presents for us as at Dispatch as his debut release on the label will be no exception! The other track making up this release is just just as devastating as the A side “Desert Heat” which has been written by Dispatch artist Cern & Nymfo together provides the kind of intro that might give a false sense of safety; that is before it drops and releases some solid heavy hitting drum work and some pure internal organ shaking low end sub. A mass of support on this release from the A-list gang such as; Alix Perez, Icicle, London Elektricity, Ulterior Motive, Ant TC1, Total Science, Survival, Fierce, Spectrasoul, Hybris, Skeptical, Vicious Circle, Universal Project, Stray, Anile, Octane & DLR, EBK, State of Mind, Judda & Krakota.

DMND004 – BTK & Optiv – Crawler / Music Within – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. It’s clear to see that the first half of 2011 has been an amazing one for Demand Records. With their first release jumping straight into the Beatport charts at #1, the second seeing Nymfo’s first ever remix and with the ink still drying on the license request for Demand’s third release to appear on the latest compilation CD from UKF, it’s clear that this label has achieved more than most start-ups. So it’s no real surprise that the fourth outing from the Swiss-owned imprint is something special too. Here we see Cause 4 Concern member and highly accomplished solo producer, Optiv, team up with Renegade Hardware’s BTK to craft two incredible drum & bass tracks with a completely unique feel. ‘Crawler’ features Presence Known on the beats who helps Optiv & BTK to craft a tribal drum-led slice of D&B with expertly placed sound FX and atmospheric touches. This is like a modern twist on the classic Virus sound, flexing delicate and understated beats with winding mid range synths and deep sub-bass. Impeccable! Backing it up is ‘Music Within’ featuring Podage & LaMeduza. Building slowly and gradually with powerful vocals, once again we’re treated to an education in the art of subtle drum & bass. If you’re looking for rinsed out amens and heavily distorted reese basslines then turn your attentions elsewhere, because this track is as beautiful as it is elegant. It won’t be turning any raves upside down, but that’s not really the point of good music, is it?

NOPPACD001 – Tes La Rok – Them – CD
Tes La Rok’s highly anticipated debut album entitled ‘Them’ will finally see the light of day. Tes La Rok made his name in dubstep circles in 2007 with the massive “Round The World Girls Remix” which immediately positioned him as one of the most exciting artists and definitely one to watch. Anthem releases such as ‘Under The Dancing Feet’ remix for Clouds, ‘Wikidness Remix’ for Mungo’s Hi-Fi, and ‘Up In The Vip / Living Fire’ on Dub Police were soon followed by bookings at DMZ in Brixton and dubstep mecca FWD>> at Plastic People. ‘Them’ features thirteen tracks engineered with precision and care. ‘Invasion’ sets the album off in a deep and minimal flavour followed by the dark and abyssal ‘Earth’. The album title track ‘Them’ mixes techno flavours with tribal percussions and futuristic basslines. ‘Murda’ takes the sound back to the year 2006 which is the year when it was originally composed and luckily recovered from a destroyed hard drive! ‘Virus’ is a dark mutated sci-fi roller followed by ‘You & I’, the track that has been causing waves all over the world. Tes gives a taste of his old junglist roots on 140bpm amen roller ‘Secrets’ and as a follow-up tests his hands on hip hop vibes in ‘Malfunction’. ‘Tribal Ting’ and ‘Spiritual Ting’ showcase the more known Tes La Rok dubwise production and his profound love to dig dub stepper sounds. ‘What’ and ‘From The Shadows’ combine deep & beautiful atmospheres with post-garage drums patterns and subheavy basslines. To bring the album to a finale and give a hint of the future, ‘Turn It Up’ brings in chopped vocals and raw 808 bass. Coming from the land of three months of nearly zero sunlight it is by no means a surprise that this album is deep, dark and futuristic. From the music to the artwork there’s a touch of Bladerunner and Alien. These tracks are being championed by the main players such as Distance, N-Type, Kryptic, Minds, Desto, Pinch, Addison Groove and Cyrus.

EXIT031 – Synkro & Indigo – Guidance – 12″ Vinyl
Never afraid to write music from the heart rather than trying to fit a mould Synkro & Indigo bring a refreshing and inspirational sound to the table and Exit Records are proud to provide an outlet for their work. Their dedicated followers have eagerly awaited guidance, and there’s good reason. Awash with lush atmospheres and vocals it’s a track that manages to touch the listener’s soul and becomes more addictive the more it’s listened to. Delayed snare rolls and fills create an ocean of space for the ambience to develop into a warm and cosey blanket of pure bliss. Reflection contains the same emotion triggering qualities as the A side and is the perfect partner. A little more drum based than its accomplice but just as soothing, it takes you through a workout of intricate beat edits and mixes distant classical vocals with subtle chord progressions.

3024014 – Jon Convex – Convexations – 12″ Vinyl
Coming off the back off a sustained period of acclaim as one half of Instramental (an act who you haven’t heard the last of) we’re incandescently proud to debut longtime 3024 alumni Damon Kirkham’s first solo material as Jon Convex with a sound that strikes off in a direction entirely of its own, while mirroring the roaming analogue methodology of his group’s latter day work. Opener ‘Convexations’ raises the curtain with traces of Yamaha fog and a hollowed out kick before a bassline fusing Giorgio Moroder with The Human Centipede rears up to provide unrelenting forward momentum. Glimpses of dialogue warped to the point of gibberish, an ever growing chorus of muttering percussive synths and a zero gravity drop complete the picture of a ride in cattle class all the way to Pittsburgh. ’Falling Again’ dials back its predecessor’s intensity, evoking a robotic production line take on UKG. A metronomic 2-step rhythm forms the basis for a replicant diva’s final performance while another strikingly organic bass line spends the duration of the track expanding and arcing with all the grace of a particularly low frequency solar flare. Exclusive to the digital version is ‘Order Into Chaos’. The first Jon Convex track we heard, a particularly intense 3024 board meeting saw it declared too good to leave sitting on the shelf. The most (warehouse) floor focused track offered here and a heads down simmering vat of acid, the surface of which sporadically erupts in frothing signal distortion and T1000 kicks. With the audio content taking a turn into harder and darker territory, Erosie’s inimitable artwork provides an inky curve ball by taking his collage series into a softer but no less vivid palette providing another perfect visual counterpoint to proceedings.

Next up its King Koopa. Unlike the giant lizard who Super Mario needs to defeat to save his precious princess this is one ferocious, mean, fire breathing track that won’t let go so easy. This one packs a punch that will knock any mushroom or fire flower straight out of your big body in seconds. So better make sure you got some 1up’s  to make it through this one!

NS008R – Girl Unit – Wut (Claude Vonstroke Remixs) – 12″ Vinyl
We were adamant: “no ‘Wut’ remixes”. But when Vonstroke comes knocking you let him in! Driven by CVS’ own enthusiasm for Girl Unit’s 2010 anthem, the Dirty Bird label boss submitted to us three different versions of his remix, each progressively more stripped down. All three transform ‘Wut’ from gleaming crunk anthem to bass-driven house metatool, expanding on its raw big-room essence. Here we release two of the three versions. On side A Vonstroke’s “Undressed” mix borrows Girl Unit’s synth arrangements and vocal tics, keeping all the ecstasy and emotion of the original for its epic swells, which build up to huge cavernous drops of pitched Miami bass hits and clattering 808s. Quintessentially CVS, this is the sound of Night Slugs x Dirty Bird. On side AA is the “Butt Naked Mix” (title picked by Vonstroke in true DB style). This version relates to the original only in the most spectral sense, stripping away almost all of Girl Unit’s stems and melodic elements. The result is a beautifully restrained rhythm track, a machine-like big-room dub that builds and drops so elegantly yet so devastatingly. The work of a true master!

ORCA004 – xxxy – You Gotta Do You – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Following the huge success of XI’s second release, Orca Recordings is back to deliver its highly anticipated forth instalment; this time from the highly versatile Xxxy , who has delivered two unbelievably cuts for his first 12” on the label. It has been an unbelievable year for Xxxy, with the success of ‘You Always Start It’ on Ten Thousand Yen capturing the attention of many of the scene’s tastemakers including Mount Kimbie, Untold MJ Cole and many others. With his new outing on Orca, Xxxy’s musical style has evolved considerably to incorporate a whole new set of influences and ideas, which leads us to proudly announce that the productions set to be released in the Orca series are ‘You Gotta Do You’ and ‘Open Your Eyes’. ‘You Gotta Do You’ sees Xxxy venture into new sonic territory drawing influence from acid techno, continuing the creative exploration of this classic sound alongside other contemporary artists like Boddika and Blawan. The driving 808’s and futuristic synth arpeggios give this all the heavy vibes of a classic Underground Resistance release with a unique modern interpretation. On the flip, ‘Open Your Eyes’ carries a completely different focus, taking on all the features of an early 90’s jungle anthem and re-contextualizing them into 130bpm amen drivenworkout. Both of these productions are from the ethos that looking into the past for musical inspiration and to create a new breed of sound that is strong enough to smash the biggest clubs but versatile enough to please the most discerning headphone listener.

BRK020 – Erra – Stax / Jookup – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy, Berkane Sol present the vinyl debut of Erra. Erra comes bursting through your speakers with a riot of tuff drums and sweet melody – its like the sound of someone who’s rinsed their console so much that its gone way beyond high scores and into a full on system meltdown. ‘Stax’ starts out with a dreamy intro which leads into the rudest of wake up calls – a proper peak-time jackin’ synth stab married to a smartly evolved bassline, all driven by concussive garage flavoured rhythms. ‘Jookup’ on the flip again demonstrates Erra’s irresistible talent for blending blissful keys with hectic dancefloor moments, this time really bringing the sickly grime synths to the front, with some cute but disembodied vocals punctuating the action. The 12” follows up Erra’s popular L2S digital release ‘Cake Music’, and neatly shows off this young producers rapid development. These tracks have been getting love from people such as: Al Tourettes (Applepips), Mary Anne Hobbs, Brackles (Rinse FM), N Type (Wheel and Deal), DJ Flight (1 Xtra), Spamchop (Wigflex), 2562 (Tectonic), Shortstuff (Ramp), Cardopusher (Hyperdub), Martyn (3024), Martin Kemp (Blunted Robots), Elgato (Hessle Audio), Selector dub U (Hotflush), Skipple (Sub FM), West Norwood Cassette Library (Teal), King Thing (Fortified)

PLATTER002 – S-Max & Spatial – Ms. Rosen Dub / Corti – 12″ Vinyl
The second serving from Schmorgasbord brings together two relatively disparate and unrelated artists, but who both share a uniquely twisted approach to making music. S-Max has been doing his thing for some time, running legendary home all things bizarre in house and techno, Boogizm, and releasing a special kind of groove on labels such as Telegraph, 7th City and Karloff. His original track, ‘Ms. Rosen Dub’, swaggers and sways with the spirit of classic Yorkshire bleeps and bass. The groove is house, but the spirit of adventure is most definitely techno. His remix of Spatial’s ‘Corti’ takes a very different approach, taking a rolling, jungle-like approach to dubstep and nailing it to the groove with stabbing bass notes. Spatial leapt onto the bass music radar late 2008 with his shadowy Infrasonics imprint, and quickly snapped heads with his crisp, refined approach to 2-step rhythms. Since then he’s done things on his own terms, only releasing for himself and mutating his sound over a series of 10”s. ‘Corti’ perfectly demonstrates Spatials unconventional tendencies, lurching and buckling around a perfectly honed splatter of beats, off-centre synths and delirious vocal snippets. Meanwhile on his remix of S-Max, Spatial flips the script once again with a stomping, swung techno angle that hammers the original into an uptempo, fist-pumping banger.

OUTNL001 – Kastil – Dusty Edits – 12″ Vinyl
File under Disco Edits. As an extension of their Dutch electronic music website Outernational.nl, we present you the newly born imprint Outernational Recordings. The kick off for this unique vinyl series is by Basque County native Kastil who sets the right tone with three wonderful Disco edits at a mid-tempo / slomo pace. Since uploading these tracks to his SoundCloud page, the feedback has been enormous. Side A contains the long, slow and loopy ‘Back to Philadelphia’, where Kastil cleverly plays with the vocals and delay and creates a highly tense build up. There’s no doubt that some large players in the very popular Disco edit culture will play this one out. On the B1 side you find the track ‘SMD’. A track which received great feedback by some key figures on SoundCloud. This track is the ultimate pre-lude for the summer. Fortunately, this is being released just early enough to enjoy this during the European and Northern American summer. With again beautiful vocals floating through the track, this track definitely reminds one of a hot day in the local park. The B2 track is called ‘Rolls Royce’. Perfect as the last track of this release since it’s a long edit which ends with a very atmospheric piano solo that keeps on floating through the last few minutes of the track. All and all, these edits will definitely make some heads turn after the date of release. Supported by: Cosmic Boogie, Dicky Trisco, The Legendary 1979 Orchestra, Sleazy Beats Recordings, Ben La Desh, 78 Edits, Osvaldo Wilson, Mannmademusic, Gitchell Moore

Rwina Records follows up Doshy’s unforgettable ‘Suspiria’ EP with yet another massive and dramatic A-side, this time from Finnish dubstep producer Desto.  Like ‘Suspiria’, Desto’s ‘Makowrap’ is all about uncompromising focus, exacting precision and killer melodies, with the normally hyperactive producer temporarily shelving his loopy constructions and frantic arpeggios and instead favouring a measured, slowly building progression instead.  Desto’s volatile energy is channelled into bursts of epic, triumphant melody, undeniably anthemic each and every single time they stream out blindingly over the track’s weighty kick, a reminder that this is, in fact, bass music after all.  The hushed chords and skittering, exaggerated snares that dribble and melt all over the track put a noticeably hip-hop slant that permeates the rest of the EP. The other two tracks hearken back to the usual kind of colourful dubstep Desto is associated with, all arpeggiated fireworks and topsy-turvy synth chords. ‘Neptune’ staggers down a descending progression into plateaus of sub-bass throb as synths twinkle and shoot out from the empty spaces, playful percussive accents peeking out mischievously, the sound of drum machines misbehaving.  The other track on the flipside focus around vocal samples, with ‘Overkrookd’ attacking a frightened vocal with monotonous LFO stabs that occasionally break through into an undersea world of squiggling chords and bubbling melodies, Jokeresque majesty that quickly flatlines back into the track’s unforgiving mechano-skank. Finally, as an exclusive extra digital; ‘React’ drops somersaulting breakbeats over more of those aqueous 8-bit synths, alternately trilling gently and smearing themselves across the wet, mouldy canvas.  While it’s quite possibly the label’s most dubstep-centric release yet, Desto’s ‘Makowrap’ is just another in a series of masterful releases combining the most colourful and vibrant sectors of dubstep and grime with hip-hop swagger, melodically rich while keeping them fully focused on the dancefloor.

This forward thinking track showcases DJG’s intelligent approach to bass music. His reformat balances the deep with the dance oh-so-well

UNTITLED004 – 501 feat. Kaleb – Strings Attached / Smoke And Mirrors – 12″ Vinyl
Strings Attached: The trance intro might leave some confused to what to expect from the drop. But when it does it takes away all confusion and injects you with a shot of adrenaline with it’s catchy bass and filtered vocals courtesy of Kaleb. This tune has had serious impact across the globe as a dubplate and will have an even bigger impact upon it’s release. Smoke and Mirrors: Smoke and Mirrors has Finnish supertalent 501 showing his ability to fuse different elements into one big tune. From the morphing guitars in the intro to the purple drop and twisted vocals with glitchy fx further in it is clear why this producer is hot on every one’s lip. This tune just progresses and progresses and will leave you wanting to flip over to the b-side.

New D&B Releases

RECIPE017 – Dub Phizix – Out There / Athos – 12″ Vinyl
Dub Phizix is a fresh name for 2011. His unique style has won over many people including Soul:r & Creative Source with whom he has 12”s coming soon. His punchy production and clever arrangement impressed us at Ingredients and these two tracks have been on heavy rotation for the last 6 months. “Out There” is reminiscent of Photek’s drums and sounds, a great intro track. While “Athos” is a brave tune, some future thinking drum & bass with it’s tribal rhythms. Doc Scott “5/5 great stuff” S.P.Y “Big things!” John B “Nice work” DJ support: Hazard, Spectrasoul, Ulterior Motive, Krust, Doc scott, Rockwell, Dj Lee, Jubei, Digital, Klute, Spirit, Genotype, Skeptical.

New D&B Promos

REDSEAL008 – Tokyo Prose – Introducing Tokyo Prose (Phase 1) – 12″ Vinyl
Limited Edition coloured vinyl: Mixed Orange & White Vinyl One of the most anticipated releases for some time, we are proud to bring you the debut recordings from young Auckland, New Zealand duo Tokyo Prose. Discovered very early in their careers by DJ Presha, the two Sam’s were signed to Samurai Red Seal as core artists in a long term development deal. It has taken a few years to get to the point where we have this debut release fully polished and ready, but as you will hear the wait has been worth it. These 2 producers have quickly formed a very distinctive style that has been drawing fans in their droves. As well as many general fans of Drum and Bass music, their eager fanbase boasts name DJ’s and established producers before they have ever had a fully available product to purchase. ‘Introducing Tokyo Prose’ brings stylish swagger and musical substance to a scene overflowing with identical bare boned rollers. Gliding between minimal ambience and deep soulful steppers, these gifted young men aptly display their knack for sample selection and unique groove building. CRIT055 – Code 3 – What You Sayin? – 12″ Vinyl
Fresh for the summertime shine is yet more goodness from camp Critical with a diamond dubplate burner straight out of the Code 3 studio. The production trio made up of SP:MC, Jubei and Dakuan show their pedigree for CRIT055 with two slabs of almost retro D&B that could only have come been from scene stalwarts like these. Quality through and through. ‘What You Sayin’ runs out with simple two-tone chords and a staggered break to ease us into this creeping cut of subtle but definitely dangerous drum & bass. Snapping snares roll out, sub thuds from beneath as the gnawing b-line wrestles its way to throughout rearing its head then ducking beneath the surface only for the smooth keys to return to the mix. A classy piece of contrasting moods that’ll sit perfectly on the Critical collector’s shelf. Over the page ‘Double Dipped’ intros with another big break and spooky, quizzical pads and a winding double-bass that weaves its way in gently to the drop. Perhaps reminding of the Full Cycle and Talkin’ Loud golden era this one is a hard-stepping, funked up track that’ll have the floors calling for the reload. Awesome! DJ support from Hype, Friction, Jubei, Fabio, Marky, Kasra, S.P.Y. and many more.

New Bass Music CD

HESCD001 – Various – Hessle Audio : 116 & Rising – CD x 2
The compilation exists as a way to unite the entire Hessle roster, as well as allowing them an avenue to put out work by friends and producers they have been unable to work with so far. The first disc is all new work plus a second has a selection of choice cuts from the back catalogue. There’s also work from producers who they feel have shaped the label’s aesthetic, like D1’s ‘Sub Zero’, whose sub bass stabs were a staple of the early DMZ sets that they initially united over back in 2005. One of their close affiliates, Addison Groove is also featured, his anthem ‘Footcrab’ having done so much to bring the tough tempo of juke to the world’s dancefloors. The subtle pitch-shifting of a looping hip hop vocal and the polyrhythmic patter of rim shots and cymbals on ‘Fuk Tha 101’ are unmistakably his. Another producer previously unreleased on Hessle is synth-mad Randomer whose ‘Brunk’ features an industrial strength kick and finishes up with ghostly pads invoking musique concrete. The disc is rounded off by Bristol’s Peverelist, whose own dub-soaked productions, as well as those released on his label Punch Drunk, owe so much to that city’s rich musical traditions. On ‘Sun Dance’ synth chords bring to mind the dystopian drum n bass of DJ Krust. There’s a single claustrophobic Hammond note held through to the close alongside the echoing sounds of water dripping in a cave. Disc one kicks off with the spritely chimes and shuffling beat of Elgato’s ‘Music’. Untold bring’s detuned chords, jangling glass and a cheeky synth line, breaking down into mutant funky house. Blawan’s ‘Potchla Vee’ reveals some unexpected instrumentation: the skittering of what sounds like the cogs of a clock gives little breathing room to the assault of tribal drums and processed grunts. The Pearson Sound track ‘Stifle’ seems to slow things down, with an adenoidal vocal snippet acting as counterfoil to the percussive snap of the drums, delicate EQing and synth washes providing characteristic texture. Once again on ‘Twice’, Joe demonstrates the effectiveness of unexpected drum sampling, with a disconnected beat cooked up out of error bleeps and the tap of a typewriter. Pangaea’s own contribution is a rave homage; oscillating between synth stabs and a filtered ragga MC sample, the track is layered with a bouncy acid bassline, creating a phantom jump up effect. Romania’s TRG was Hessle’s first release and here builds on his mutant garage template. James Blake, re-edits an earlier Hessle release, bringing the processed vocals to the fore much in the style of his recent album.

IME026 – Kontext – Kontext (Double CD un-mixed) – CD x 2
The smoky tendrils of Stan Sevo’s music have come to shape much of what Immerse Records is about, from his first release for us back in 2008 through to his latest EP, the devastating ‘No More Room In Hell’ double pack. Stans tracks come from a world structured by micro-rhythms, where the architecture swings and funks with grace and poise, whilst the native organisms are nebulous wraiths of pads that flirt and tease the rumbling subbass that roams on the ground. The analogies may seem a little far-fetched, but the Kontext sound inspires such evocative images upon listening. Having disseminated under the radar to widespread critical acclaim, we felt it only right to bring together the strongest elements in the Kontext canon along with a few choice exclusives, to serve as a document for those unfamiliar with Russia’s best kept secret.

WHEELYDEALY014 – DJ Madd – Battle / Secrets – 12″ Vinyl
N Types label coms correct each and every time. Budapest born but now Bristol based producer DJ Madd has carved himself a pretty unique trench within his contemporaries over the space of a handful of singles – mainly released on the Boka and Black Box imprints. Going in just as hard as producers like Benga and Caspa, Madd – known to his parents as Peter Simon – manages to retain a lot of space and atmosphere in his productions, fleshing his tracks out with heavy sine wave pulses rather than those mid range frequencies that seem to get included expressly to make you lose your shit on the dancefloor. Flirting with the funk in a similar way to someone like Joker, Madd has a great command of aerated bass lines, tweaking the best force out of his low end and complimenting that speaker pressure with vibrancy and these little flickers of synth colour that lodge themselves deep in your brain for days In his own words when speaking to the Sonic Router blog last year: “appreciating both Rusko and Martyn at the same time is not a crime,”

NONPLUS011 – Lowtec – Wonderkidd / Looser – 12″ Vinyl
The ball is certainly rolling in 2011 and next up is a treat from Germanys Lowtec. Founder of highly respected label Workshop he makes his UK label debut on Nonplus Records with two fresh cuts of analogue goodness. a) Lowtec ‘Wonderkidd’ ‘Wonderkidd’ greets us with a vocal sample that morphs keys with a low-fi piano chord before the discordant groove of the main riff comes into effect. Analogue synths dance around the deep chord groove with early detroitisms flexing between a repeating bleeped out pattern. Hypnotic key stabs sink you deeper into the tune that shows us why Lowtec is one of Berlin’s top underground button pushers. aa) Lowtec ‘Looser’ The warm hiss of anaolgue beats starts off the excellent AA tune ‘Looser’. Dabs of a.m radio vocals progress the tune amongst a myriad of discreet electronic bleeps that escalate and scatter around the rhythm. Coarsely sampled ‘Shakir-like’ string chords provide the main sequence to set off this excellent tune. One for the deeper heads out there.

NONPLUS012 – Boddika – You Tell Me / Breezin – 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus+ label owners Instra:mental have been working away on solo projects in 2011 with Al Bleek working under his Boddika alias and Kid Drama as Jon Convex. Here we have Boddika’s first output on Nonplus+ after his debut on Naked Lunch in 2010 and prior to his forthcoming EP on Swamp 81. His work has been supported by DJs across the board such as Benji B, Oneman, Scuba, Shy FX, Martyn, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison, Leofah, Skream and Zed Bias amongst many others. a) Boddika ‘You Tell Me’ ‘You Tell Me’ takes us back to the 80s with its electro tinged thumping drums and freaky synths. What at first seems to be a pretty straightforward track slowly mutates into an ugly beast with its pitch bent lead and warping drum grooves that slowly swing so far out and eventually re-sync with each significant transition. Not for the seasick. aa) Boddika ‘Breezin’ On the flip Boddika provides another striped back dancefloor warmer but here he comes with a 4×4 drum pattern. With very few elements he exploits them all to their limits and the track moves with an everchanging undercurrent of acid bass coated with subtle synth melodies that work their way around the bass in a mesmerizing arrangement. Another example of Boddika’s talent for working sound to maximum effect and keeping it simple but effective.

DP052 – Emalkay – Fabrication / Massive – 12″ Vinyl
Emalkay continues his unstoppable run of form with the new single ‘Fabrication’, a track that is as addictive as it is hard-hitting. Drifting in on the soft siren call of the vocals, Emalkay filters the bass through the intro, building to the drop of the catchy, mutating bassline. The organic skitter of hi-hats gives the sparse drum pattern its swing, leaving the bass to do the damage! On the flip ‘Massive’ cranks up the pressure with a serious head down steppa. The razor sharp bassline cuts through the track like a knife, held down only by the stomp of the drums, while the ebb and flow of the pads gives an underlying eerie atmosphere to the track. 2010 was a huge year for Emalkay. Having been thrown in to the limelight by the phenomenal ‘When I Look At You’ towards the end of 2009, he has continued to penetrate through the scene with a series of quality releases like ‘Crusader / Power Tool’ and ‘Solid State / Battle Suit’. With no sign of slowing down any time soon, he continues to cement his place as one of the most exciting producers around with each new track. Stepping into 2011 with the support of the biggest DJs on the scene, some seriously heavyweight artillery and an album due out later this year on Dub Police, there really is no stopping Emalkay at the moment!

CIV020 – dÉbruit – Sis Sürpriz EP (inc 3-D artwork and 3-D glasses) – 12″ Vinyl
When French producer dÉbruit relocated to London, it was just the start of a journey that would take him much further east than Hackney. dEbruit explains; “I lived in a Turkish neighbourhood in London and my productions are always a result of curiosity over the sounds and people around me. I wanted to learn more and try something with Turkish music and instruments so I travelled to Turkey in October, and I’m so glad I did.” The end results of dÉbruit’s travels are the four painstakingly crafted tracks of Şiş Sürpriz (which translates as Skewer Surprise). Traditional Turkish folk instruments are coupled with modern, synthetic sounds on an EP that’s full of eastern promise. Opener Accordé Don combines accordion and darbuka drums (a kind of goblet drum) with “bump-hop” beats, whilst Turkish Ish features zurna flutes, talkbox effects and scything synths. Mezdé’s bassheavy, low-slung bounce deploys the string sounds of the kabak kemane – a violin-like instrument originating from Southeastern Turkey – with darbuka and davul drums. Zurna flutes and synths return on the slo-mo, chopped and screwed digi-funk of Lil Zurna. Born Xavier Thomas and raised in Brittany, France, dÉbruit’s name is an amalgamation of the French words debris (broken glass) and bruit (noise). His boundary-smashing, genreswerving style deliberately veers towards the chaotic – “I like when electronic music and instruments lose control of what they’re meant to do”, he adds. Şiş Sürpriz is the third in dÉbruit’s trilogy of EPs which began with futuristic electro hip-hop workout Let’s Post Funk featuring Jamie Woon and Om’Mas Keith, and was followed by 2010’s African highlife inspired Spatio Temporel. The trio of releases all feature 3-D artwork by German designer Rainbowmonkey, and 3-D glasses are also included for your viewing pleasure. dÉbruit is currently crafting a debut album based around trips to West Africa and recordings with the region’s indigenous musicians and traditional instruments. dÉbruit has also been honing his live show which now incorporates a three-piece band, thumb pianos, African drums, highlife guitar, talk box and more, all accompanied by live visuals from Rainbowmonkey. The new and improved live experience will be unveiled at the dates below and dÉbruit’s album is due out later this year.

SUBWAY017-1 – Seven – Cerebral EP – 12″ Vinyl
From the creative brain who brought you ‘Siren’, ‘Crazy Talk’, ‘Wait’ & ‘Saturn’ comes a very special EP with the name quality written all over it. We’re talking about Edward Berry aka ‘Seven’ this brilliant producer & dj knows how to work a dancefloor from all angles.. His Cerebral EP shows how diverse seven goes sound wise, from dark looming percussive beats to up-tempo jungle bashment and back again. This EP has it all. Part 1 contains the epic title track ‘Cerebral’.. this one has been a regular in sets from Youngsta from day dot.. The second you hear it you know who.. Eerie.. Dark.. And loads of subs.. This track will remind you a lot of Ed Rush & Optical in their Wormhole faze just taken back to the 140 bpm range. Side B features ‘Memory Loss’ a bulldozer like roller that packs a punch like Mike Tyson. A tune that embodies Seven’s sound like no other.. No joking around and just straight pressure business.. Once this one kicks in you know it’s time to get serious. Hold tight for part 2 of Seven’s Cerebral EP which will feature Seven teaming up with some of his trusty friends.

ZEN12288 – Mr Scruff – Wobble Control – 12″ Vinyl
The one, the only, the remarkably holey Mr. Scruff returns to battle with the moreish snafu of “Wobble Control”. A synth-heavy, low slung 4/4 number featuring a wiggling centipede of a keys line which will get under your nose in erotic ways you’ve never dreamt of, plus a goodly dollop of unruly bass, the whole thing scruffed up in the man-potato’s trademark warm ‘n’ dusty productio-stylo. The sound of electronic instruments getting together while their parents are out and having a good time. (We hope that sick will come out of the carpet).Next up, Nickodemus & Zeb from Brooklyn’s legendary Turntables On The Hudson crew tackle “Music Takes Me up”, adding a ton of bump & a ladle of synth to Alice Russell’s raw vocals and ending up with the kind of bumpy-synth soup audio-gourmands march miles for.

New Bass Music Promos

SAIGON005 – Milyoo – Kazaduon EP – 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy Limited Edition vinyl pressing – With support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Angel Molina, Karl Moestl, Bunzer0, Rob Booth, The Black Dog, James Mountain and more…. “Kentucky seems an unlikely place for bass music producers to be based, but with modern technology being what it is, geographical boundaries in music continue their slide into relative obsolescence. Having had his debut release featured in Boomkat’s top 100 singles of 2010, Milyoo has already been endorsed by Gilles Peterson and Mary Ann Hobbes, and judging by the quality of his latest work, the Kazaduon EP on Saigon, such hype is certainly justified. The title track is a melancholic yet strangely hopeful array of pop vocal samples, tearjerking keys and punchy drums. It’s slightly cheesy but enchantingly peculiar and one can’t help but be moved by the sheer amount of emotive musicality present. This musicality is led by the hand into more obscure territories in ‘Takedown’, with its broken beats, chordal pads, and simple melodies creating an ethereal soundscape punctuated by clever yet soulful drumwork. In the great tradition of keeping the truly weird stuff for the flip, the first b-side, ‘Box of Tapes’ unleashes an aural assault of acid infused dissociative chaos, which hangs on for dear life to a solid rhythm and chord motif. It’s delightfully disorganised and will have many listeners subconsciously calling for the outlawing of strict quantization to ensure music of this style is made more often. Closing track ‘Phonix’ is a little more restrained in its entropic aesthetic, but still keeps the beats wonky enough to be able to squeeze in some more ‘normal’ chord progressions without approaching over-sentimentality. Whether the track stands up on its own is perhaps up for debate, but it is a fitting end to a bizzarely brilliant release”. Words courtesy of: http://www.ibiza-voice.com/story/news/3133

HESLP001 – Various – Hessle Audio : 116 & Rising (3 X 12” Vinyl & 2 X CD Format) – 12″ Vinyl x 3
This format is 3X12” Vinyl & 2 X CD packaged together in a gatefold sleeve shrink wrapped. The disc is rounded off by Bristol’s Peverelist, whose own dub-soaked productions, as well as those released on his label Punch Drunk, owe so much to that city’srich musical traditions. On ‘Sun Dance’ synth chords bring to mind the dystopian drum n bass of DJ Krust, the track driven forwarded by paper-like hi-hats and cymbals. There’s a single claustrophobic Hammond note held through to the close alongside the echoing sounds of water dripping in a cave. Disc one kicks off with the spritely chimes and shuffling beat of Elgato’s ‘Music’, whose muted vocal chant was used to such beautiful effect in Kennedy’s recent FABRICLIVE mix. Romania’s TRG was Hessle’s first release and here builds on his mutant garage template, with a reverb-soaked drum kit jostling against some analogue pads and a seagull-sounding distorted warble. James Blake, re-edits an earlier Hessle release, bringing the processed vocals to the fore much in the style of his recent album. It’s soul music that’s undecidedly electronic, the vocals screwed and chopped into the background, a virtuoso display of arrangement ordering a lacklustre pair of cowbells, a chorus of shuffles, croaks and pads into an infectious slow burner.

HENCH025V – Jakes – Hench Mixtape Vol2. Sampler 2 – 12″ Vinyl
t’s been an interesting few years for the one called Jakes. From being one of the highest-regarded MC’s in the drum and bass world, he took his hand to producing. After creating some of Bristol’s earliest and most seminal Dubstep tracks, such as ‘Modem’ and ’3Kout’, his studio skills and style became further embossed. In early 2010 his tracks, ‘Rhythm’ and ‘Skanners’ spearheaded the productive assault that was the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1. For the next installment of the HENCH mixture, Jakes steps up with a double dose of his signature production style. Fasten all loose furniture to the floor and turn up the sub… A. THE DALEK – A familiar sound bite used in a less ordinary surroundings. Papa ‘Ench lures you in, then steps it up with chopping, high-tempo bass rhythm. Wait for the lead-synth to come in, creating an evil backdrop to the hollow steps ‘The Dalek’ lays down. This is the perfect tune to drop on an unexacting crowd – when that sinister baseline drops, they’ll be baying for the rewind again and again. AA. GOLD CHAIN – After a distinctive cameo on HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1, Gold Chain’s reputation precedes its release. Having also just been remixed by D*Style bosses, D*Minds, this production has been responsible for rumbling subs at dances across the country. In suitably Jakes fashion, Gold Chain enters with a hip-hop step to it. Layered vocal and lurching kick-snare leads to a driving and pulsing bassline. The outcome is a typically moody and distinctive roller from the HENCH. These tracks both feature on the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 2 (soon to be released). The Mixtape features unreleased tracks from the likes of Jakes, D*Minds, Mensah, Eddie K & Minus, Lost, Komonazmuk, Chasing Shadows and many more. Also including a full mix by Jakes,

Hessle Audio present “116 & Rising” LP

Hessle Audio present “116 & Rising” LP

Posted 18 April 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Curated by the imprint’s three co-founders – Ben UFO, Pangaea and Pearson Sound (AKA Ramadanman) – the CD version is comprised of 12 brand new tracks tracks, with contributions from every single producer who’s previously released a 12″ on Hessle, plus a couple of guests, and a second disc collecting previously released highlights from the catalogue.

That means fresh heat not just from Pangaea and Pearson Sound but also Blawan, Joe, Elgato, Untold, Cosmin TRG, Peverelist, James Blake and Addison Groove, and a couple of unexpected treats – such as D1‘s never-before-released archive cut ‘Subzero’ and a killer from the hitherto little-known Randomer. Most of the tracks on Disc 2 are modern dancefloor classics, and hardly require any introduction – among them Martyn’s eerily suspended, deeply affecting remix of TRG’s ‘Broken Heart’, Untold’s none-more-livewire ‘I Can’t Stop This Feeling’, Pangaea’s ‘Why’ and James Blake’s ‘Buzzard & Kestrel’ (a track he’s arguably yet to better).

The new tracks will constitue the vinyl edition of 116 & Rising, which is a 12″ triple-pack; the striking artwork on both CD and vinyl editions is by Will Bankhead. Oh, and there’ll be a launch party for the album at London’s XOYO club on Friday 13 May.

New D&B CD

SUBTLE004CD – Various – Subtle Audio Vol II (3XCD) – CDX 3
3X CD– two are unmixed and crammed with 26 tracks of varying shapes and styles, the other is a mix up of Subtle Audio releases past, present and future by label head honcho Code. CD’s 1 & 2 feature well established artists alongside others who are just beginning to make a name for themselves. Each artist / production team contributes two tracks, giving them extra breadth to showcase different styles and moods. Reinforced Records veteran Alpha Omega (aka Nubian Minds) goes uptempo and atmospheric with “Impulse” and downtempo and quirky with “Highway Cruising”. Sileni, of Planet Mu fame, supplies the beat-less intro for the album and also a collage of pitched snares and seething hiss on “Real Horrorshow”. France’s Naibu has made waves over the last few years with a series of quality releases (including his self titled debut album) and he continues to strengthen his reputation here with a unique soundscape produced for a short animated film, aswell as a finely honed piece of breakbeat called “Nightscape”. Dissident also had a highly acclaimed album release recently, under his Kontext alias (which he uses for his work outside of D&B). Here we get both sides of coin with the jerky original version of Kontext’s “Thaw” on Disc 1 and a kick driven D&B remix by Dissident on Disc 2. Another artist in the limelight presently is Austria’s Sub – he follows his recent Subtle Audio vinyl excursion with the live jazz sound of “Sensualism” and the dark, half-step sound of “Katana”. DSP spices things up with two collaborative efforts. “Lyrica Haze” resulted from a studio session with scene legend DJ Trax and check out his hook-up with recent Rephlex signing Macc for some interesting breakbeat flexing and a mysterious atmosphere. Also featured are (relatively) new names such as Mindmapper, Fre4knc, Nic TVG, San.Dra, Earl Grey, Parallel, CJ Weaver, Indidjinous and The Blunt Needles / Enjoy. For the mix CD 3, Code has pieced together a fluid mix of Subtle Audio material past, present and future. This is certainly one of the deepest mixes you’ll hear this year, a real journey full of everything from old old funk breaks and glitch-ifed beats to trippy synthesisers and moody jazz mixed with great fluidity.

New D&B Releases

PRODUCT011 – Craggz & Parallel – Metroplex / Future Shock – 12″ Vinyl
The final 12” Vinyl taken from the Turn The Page album. Whilst other tunes have hinted at it, ‘Metroplex’ fully embraces their inherent love of techno with huge half-time 808’s and synths that would make Juan Atkins chomp at the bit. One for those who know and a lovely surprise for those who are yet to know. On the flip ‘Future Shock’ sticking with the vintage outboard gear sounds the guys then up it once more for one final drum & bass rollout that has killer written all over it. Turn it up, close your eyes and get marching!

EXITLP006 – Genotype – Ritual Dance LP – 3×10”
After a lengthy break from the electronic music world, Genotype is back with an LP for Exit Records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm. Having started his music career in the mid nineties under the legendary alias Just Jungle, with releases on the massively influential labels of that era such as Trouble On Vinyl, Renegade Hardware and Reinforced Records, its no surprise that he’s managed to capture the essence of rawness in his recent music akin to the early years of Jungle. Many producers have tried and failed to bring back the old skool sound with an original flavor but Genotype has managed this by resisting the temptation to lash in the tired old classic breaks and instead has drawn for the more organic sounding percussion and drum kits. The dubbed out theme runs throughout the album paying homage to his love for West Indian music which he has been involved in for many years and naturally influences the music he creates. Genotype is a man of few words and prefers to let his music do the talking so check out the album and draw your own conclusions.

TRIPS004 – Silent Witness – Brainedrain / Frozen Still – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. A. Silent Witness – Brainedrain opens up with an uplifting sound scape of lush chords, tight beats, and bass growls that rises up to a devastating drop of titan like proportions. Drums and bass dance with each other along the way, taking in turn-around tripwires and reverb bombs. It eventually settles with a break down consisting of twisted pitch drops and euphoric anticipation. The second drop then kicks in with a different twist on the bass frenzy witnessed earlier. Simply Disgusting. AA. Silent Witness – Frozen Still still harks back to the vibes of jungle with an eerie wash amidst classic stabs and vocal snippets. This sound is updated with contemporary minimal drums, exciting rhythmic frills, and a rolling sub bass designed to smother everyone in the Silent Witness ether. Bass stabs and moody pads prevail with time stretched fills electrocuting all in it’s path. Dangerous business! DJ Support: Klute, Break, Survival, Ant C, Fierce, Noisia, Silver, Vicious Circle, Cause 4 Concern,Friction.

SUBTLE004EP – Various – Subtle Audio Vol II – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy promo. This is the second compilation album from Ireland’s ever inventive Subtle Audio label. With Dj’s as diverse as Mary Anne Hobbs of BBC Radio 1, Bailey on BBC Radio 1Xtra and possibly the best-known name in electronica, Aphex Twin playing Subtle Audio material regularly, you can rest assured that this is Drum & Bass beyond the normal scope and will be enjoyed by many who thought they didn’t like that style of music! The Vinyl side of the project holds 5 exclusive tracks. On disc 1, Requiem kicks things off in style with heavy hitting drum onslaught of “Ancient Dub” while on the flip-side the sweet ambient breakbeat of Accidental Style’s “Space Funkt” is one of the most delicately delivered pieces of music you’ll hear this year. Disc 2 takes in the soaring synths of Mecca’s “Virtual Affair”, the ratchet and wrench inspired percussives of “Janne” by Dan Habarnam and a 170 bpm VIP version of Sub’s downtempo jazz offering on the CD version of this release – “Sensualism”. As you will hear, these producers are bringing fresh ideas and an experimental ethos to the sound of Drum & Bass. We’re looking forward to hearing what they come up with next! Watch this space.

CITRUS043 – Morebeat / Nphonix & Enei – I’m Not A Monster / Quicksilver – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Citrus reveals its sour sting once again as the Morebeat boys step up together with Nphonix & Enei for Citrus 043. You know Citrus has that standard quality feel and again they smash this release in their own way.. bringing 2 heavyweight tech infused rollers to the plate to continue the Citrus Saga. First up its Morebeats ‘I’m not a monster’ and their dead right with the title because this tune isn’t a monster.. it’s a Behemoth.. Acid like bleeps, crunching bass lines and punching kicks.. The rushing sounds remind you of older Konflict material with a dash of BSE.. If you still have no clue who Morebeat is by now then better start backtracking these guys. Flip it over to side B for Nphonix & Enei’s ‘Quicksilver’ if your into rollers then oooh baby.. this one is an essential one.. These funky beats will not leave you alone on the dance floor for one minute.. Quicksilver takes the funky dnb section for a ride on this one.. If you are into the old stuff of Noisia or Ed Rush & Optical then you should 100% give this a listen..

ISP005 – Arkist & Komonazmuk – Outbreak / Until Next Time – 12″ Vinyl
Ever-versatile, Komonazmuk has seen varied releases on labels including Combat Recordings and Apple Pips, as well as a number of legendary remixes alongside Appleblim, including Brian Eno and Bonobo. His hotly anticipated album is due out on H.E.N.C.H in 2011. Arkist is a fresh face with a fresh sound straight out of Bristol’s creative melting-pot. Newly released from beneath the mentoring wings of Komonazmuk and Appleblim, his slick productions have already been slated for release on DecaRhythm, Apple Pips and Subdepth Records. A. Arkist & Komonazmuk – ‘Outbreak’ – Is it a bird, is it a plane? Arkist & Komonazmuk’s collaborative effort sticks to ISP’s ‘it’s-impossible-to-pin-down’ mantra, dipping its beak into the waters of electro, robo-funk, dubstep… possibly even harking back to a long-forgotten time when breakbeat was interesting. Straight up, no messing, ‘Outbreak’ comes with its weighty, synthesised beats from the go. After the drop the bassline strolls along playfully below a mirror of the same in light-footed melody. Around the halfway mark the ghosts of former rave stabs and an acid synth line add to an already eclectic sound. Watch out for the growling switch-up in the second drop. DJ support from: Appleblim, the Foreign Beggars, HENCH, Maryanne Hobbs etc AA. Arkist – ‘Until Next Time’ – The spikey breakbeats and spliced vocals of the intro give little warning of the rich sonics and warm compression of the track that follows the drop. It’s dubstep Jim, but not as we know it… not a wobble in sight but smooth sub-bass pulses position this track firmly on the dancefloor, while a fluid, saturdated melody and glistening top end show exactly why Arkist’s production standards have been turning heads in the scene recently. Never one to sit back and ride the loop, ‘Until Next Time’ is no different, with Arkist repeatedly shifting through gears of sub-heavy groove. If Ibiza was built for bass-heads, this track would be wearing the needles out at the Cafe del Mar. DJ Support from: Scuba, Headhunter, Appleblim etc.

PRDM003 – Goth Trad / DJ Tuttle – Ratville Remixed Cuts #1 – 12″ Vinyl
180 gram Vinyl. RATVILLE is a new school dub band releasing their 1st album Dubs on the Corner in 2009, leaving serious after effects throughout the country. This time, GOTH-TRAD and DJ TUTTLE, east – west dubstep masters remixed the tracks to create a challenging piece of vinyl cut!! Remix was done by two artists, contributing to the spread of dubstep in Japan. As a host of Back To Chill releasing from UK’s one and only DEEP MEDI MUSIK, GOTH-TRAD is now achieving worldwide prominence. On the other hand, leader of DUBSTEP RUDE, DJ TUTTLE is out to shake things up establishing a new label NODE with Akira Ohashi from Psycheouts G. GOTH-TRAD’s side modestly builds up till it finally rocks the floor in the latter half. May suit for outdoor performances. Heavy duty 808 type kick supporting bottom end with metal-like percussion and SEs floating in the air, DJ TUTTLE side is made for the darkest closed chambers to inhale the low frequency. This is the spearhead of dubstep made in Japan. Hands-on approach of the two made a sensational reaction with Ratvilleafs sound, pushing it to the next dimension. PUBLICRIDDIM is the Japannese independent label estalished in 2009 to hand down the forefront of the underground music scene to posterity.

HENCH021 – Chasing Shadows – Red (Chasing Shadows Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Black Vinyl only. With the massive ‘It Was Written’, Chasing Shadows’ dark production style broke through. Having now had two double-sided H.E.N.C.H releases; ‘Dr Sin/ The End’ and ‘Ill/Amirah’ and their track ‘Dream On’ forming the crescendo for the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, these talented producers are rapidly becoming household names within the dubstep fraternity. Once again this duo brings to the table two tracks that have been the talk amongst all who’ve bared witness in the club. Two distinctive, destructive productions that are guaranteed to cause delight. A. LAID BLAK – RED (CHASING SHADOWS REMIX) – Spanish-style guitar riff builds to make way for one of the catchiest vocal hooks that Bristol’s ever produced. Continue further to make way for a characteristically epic bassline drop that will shake the floor from beneath you. ‘Red’ is an awe-inspiring track that builds constantly. Expect the whole crowd to have hands in the air and singing along to this one – truly a future classic. AA. ODYSSEY – Odyssey is the kind of production that your neighbours are going to loath you for, but you just can’t stop listening to it anyway. An Atmospheric and expectant intro builds into juggernaut-like bassline. Couple this with its rolling tempo and crashing snares and you get the idea of why it works on your iPod, on the stereo, in the rave, and pretty much anywhere else that calls for a roller of this proportion!

DUBLINE007 – Vaski – I Only Date Aliens / Robot Sounds – 12″ Vinyl
When DJ/Producer Vaski sent his demo to rottun manager Excision, he had no idea of the journey that he was beginning. With his first two tracks storming the beatport top ten charts, Vaski hit the studio, returning to his Electro House production roots for the massive Terror Dome EP, featuring the self-titled track as well as the hit single ‘You Wouldn’t Understand,’ Peaking again in the top ten of dubstep on beatport. Vaski’s productions and local DJ sets began to gain attention of international promoters and DJ’s. Vaski spent the next season DJing at many Twin Cities venues, playing at the famed First Ave, Dinkytowner, and The Loft all the while working on his next work. World on Fire EP shook not only the beatport charts but the entire dubstep community. All five tracks peaked in the top 25 in dubstep on beatport, two tracks in the top ten, and the famous ‘Get Down’ claiming its rightful place as a number one hit. MR011 – Jamie George – Flying Saucer (Ft Roska & J Kenzo Remixes) – 12″ Vinyl
Roska’s Kicks and Snares/RKS is back with another big release, and this time it comes courtesy of Jamie George with the hotly anticipated Flying Saucer. First picked up by DJ Oneman, making it a feature on his Rinse mix cd, support for this track has grown and grown with well known acts such as Toddla T, Hot Chip and Tomb Crew repping it hard. Combining elements of UKG, House and Dubstep Jamie has created an instant classic that has worked hard to earn this release and the plays of DJ’s all across the country. Roska himself steps up with the first remix, a re-imagining with special attention on the percussion, elements of tribal and dancehall peel back the layers of the original in the way that only a talented minimalist like Roska can. With his speciality lying in the truly funky Roska drops a mix that literally drags you up to your feet and pushes you harder the longer it’s played. J Kenzo, of Dub Police fame, completes the package with a much darker, harder affair. You get the impression he took the original track and made it watch the entire Saw series back to back with Halloween then sent it back scarred forever. In all seriousness Kenzo has a real talent for creating dark, bass driven tracks and he has expanding on that here adding heavy portions of electro and old school to compose a truly original mix. Check them out and get back to us.

A sure-footed crowd pleaser that shows the guys getting seriously engrossed in some vintage D&B vibes.

RECIPE012 Skeptical / Pessimist – Cold One (Jubei Remix) / Zulu 12″ Vinyl
Skeptical’s ‘Cold One’ rubber-stamped his arrival on the drum & bass scene. With releases signed to Exit, Dispatch & 31 records, 2010 is shaping up to be his year. Man of the moment Jubei loved it so much, he wanted to try his hand at remixing it, his first ever remix to boot. The Metalheadz artist grabbed it with both hands and provided this monster reese classic! Hypnotic from the start & an almighty bass drop, if this is his first ever remix, then it won’t be his last! Pessimist is a young talent from Bristol, after receiving a few demos, we wasted no time in snapping him up. “Zulu” is one of the most epic drum & bass tunes of 2010. Hot 12!! DEAD023 Temper D – Break It Down 12″ Vinyl
For the 23rd outing on this imprint deadlyp turns to long time producer temper d, who has had a string of releases on his own imprint and thought it’s time to spread his wings a bit wider as he comes with 2 different tunes than you would expect from him. Both tracks have been doing damage on the dance floor as this 12 offers something for the tech heads and the jump up crew. ‘break it down’ is a techy tearout tune that does what it says on the tin, a short intro that gets straight to the point rolls then gives way to destroying bass, and crazy stabs. One to check for sure. ‘wanna say’ is a gritty styled jump up track . with flowing chords thru out the intro with a whispered vocal ‘ I know what you wanna say’ paired with the crisp beats that take you to the drop. Then all hell is let lose as the gritty b-line and the beats take control clever use of the vocal aid the tracks progress. This tune does serious damage on the floor!!! Support from Temper d , nicky bm, ash attack, to name a few!

LARTSEKRAD Rockwell – Reverse Engineering 12″ Vinyl
Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Artwork: Black Reverse Board sleeve, Bronze Pantone logo and text throughout, all sleeve and label information written backwards in keeping with the reverse concept. Cut in inside-out (record plays from centre label out to the edge) on a Scully Lathe. Release: Less a best kept secret, now a fully fledged artist of the moment Rockwell has been steadily building a reputation as one of the more progressive electronic artists around in 2010, with an ear for a different take on how to move dancefloors whilst also showing an adept ability at beat programming that is setting himself apart from his peers. Darkestral finally release one of the most talked about tracks on underground forums (10K plus posts on a DOA) and unleash the bewildering ‘Reverse Engineering’ – a track solely built from backwards parts, that has been delighting, confounding and confusing dancefloors the world over. Coupled with the polar opposite beauty of ‘Everything (& U)’, which continues the Darkestral love for contrasting sides on releases, and was recently licensed to FabricLive52, this track marks a stamp of quality on the burgeoning minimalist dnb sound by adding the emotional layer that Darkestral aa sides have become known for.

The second release of this mightky label for the fall of 2010. Gein presents the sounds of SPKTRM to showcase its diversity he wants to sign for his label. SPKTRM straight from the USA is already a well established name out there with releases on labels like Human / Habit / Project 51 / Evol Intent / Barcode / SS. Avant Futura takes us into the depths with its hard hitting kicks, rollin snares, bassline growls and the sax floating around in the atmosphere. The flip Iconia is another bassline fuelled hardhitter. Spooky intro introduces the massive bassline. Big bad heavy beats will pound the speaker to shreds. Habit is back and ready to kick ass and take names.

SIRENUK001PT2 Siren – Broken Silence Part 2 12″ Vinyl x 2
Part 2 of the Vinyl Eps’ featuring tracks taken from their debut album, “Broken Silence”, on their own Siren Records has been doing damage on the DJ circuit for some time now. Tracks such as ‘Gumball Rally’ and ‘Broken Silence’ have been staples in the sets of everyone from Andy C to DJ Marky to Fabio and Chase and Status, as well as the new breed of artist producers such as S.P.Y, Spor and Jubei. Over the last 10 years Universal Project are responsible for hits such as ‘Vessel’ on the Virus imprint, ‘Haunted Dreams’ on their own label Universal Project and an EP on DJ Hype’s True Playaz, as well as ‘Streetilfe’ with DJ Friction for Advanced Recordings and many Renegade Hardware smashers such as ‘Danger Chamber’, ‘Comin’ Thru’ and the Black Techno EP. The Universal Project sound is B-Boy breaks with techno elements and dubwise bass, and everything in between. Releases such as ‘Between the Lines’ and the ‘Welcome to Shanktown’ EP on Renegade Hardware pushed them to the forefront of the tech dnb scene. Subsequent releases on Digital Soundboy, Critical and Quarantine displayed a diverse style that has helped establish them as heavy hitters across the board whilst collaborations with high profile artists such as Chase & Status, Dom & Roland, Fierce and most recently Jubei clearly demonstrate the respect they command from their peers. After spending a lot of time in the studio together Vice and Ruxspin decided to create a new guise for their own brand of rolling future funk. Siren is the result. Both artists in their own right have toured the world from the farthest reaches of Europe to the United States and Asia, consistently destroying dancefloors and gaining a reputation as masters of their craft. The aim of this duo is to cover all styles within the scene and not be constrained by subgenres, whilst still maintaining a dancefloor ethos which is true to their UK roots.

New D&B CD

RISECD03 Concord Dawn – The Enemy Within CD
Nestled within what old-world Englishmen would call The Antipodes, New Zealand is truly an exceptional place. Taking huge pride in their native musicians, radio stations are bound by law to give over a fixed percentage of airtime to New Zealand artists. This results in a rather special situation for independent dance music producers, such as Auckland raised Matthew Harvey, a.k.a. Concord Dawn. With a level playing field underground genres like drum & bass have thrived in New Zealand, with producers being lumped in alongside traditional pop stars and rock bands. It’s no overstatement to say that Concord Dawn is an institution in NZ, proven by the presales for ‘The Enemy Within’ on iTunes New Zealand which saw the album slot in at a rather healthy #2 just between Shihad (NZ’s biggest rock band) and Maroon 5. Featuring a selection of guest appearances, from fellow NZ D&B dons Bulletproof and Cern, to ‘80s pop star Rikki Morris ‘The Enemy Within’ provides a rich tapestry of tastes and flavours across the drum & bass spectrum that will prove to be just as popular on the world stage as it is at home.

NONPLUS009 Jimmy Edgar – +NXTLVLNXTLVL / My Balance (Last Priority) 12″ Vinyl
Hot off the back of his sexually charged XXX album which included the track ‘Hot Raw Sex’ of which Instra:mental provided one of many remixes, Jimmy Edgar has elevated the Nonplus catalogue with this superb two track 12”. a) Jimmy Edgar ‘+NXTLVLNXTLVL’ Upon listening to this track it’s obvious this guy oozes natural musical talent from every orifice. Jerky electro beats set the backing or playful chords and melodies and the odd bit of pitch bent Gfunkery, all spliced together with the trademark “on the fly” sounding sequencing like he’s played the whole track from start to finish off the top of his head. This is Jimmy Edgar doing what he does best and that is making raw music with his raw talent. aa) Jimmy Edgar ‘My Balance (Last Priority) – ‘My balance’ takes the tempo down somewhat and heres where the real sleaze begins. Wolf whistling synth lines, laid back bass and silky smooth drums merge into an orgy of aural pleasure. Think strip clubs, neon lights, and budget porn flicks and you’ll be someway toimagining what this track sounds like. Perfect backing track for a night between the sheets with that special someone.

Little white lies has a crisp kick and snare that has time and space to create the scene, haunting vocals then take over with a killer bass this track is so deep you could drown in it. Paradise Lost Recordings is proud to present the first proper release from Seattle’s Dubtek: a 3-track EP in which Dubtek teams up with Australia’s finest, Droid Sector and Boot, as well as Italy’s Mouch to showcase three distinctive sounds. The lead track and a three-way collaboration, The Trancening brings together influences from progressive house/trance and mixes those with proper heavy subheavy dubstep to produce a tranced-up killer which will keep the most traditional dubstep fan satisfied while at the same time cause those more up for epic progressive and trance tunes to break out their glowsticks (well, we hope just in spirit!).  These three accomplished producers demonstrate both their technical prowess in the studio and their talents for stirring up a frenzy on the dancefloor.  The second drop just kills it! On the flip, Dubtek offers up two deeper tracks that are smooth as butter.  Smoke works on a number of different levels bringing in a beautifully constructed smooth as silk bassline to compliment melodic atmospherics and a garage-inspired vocal hook that are sure to bring smiles to those on the dancefloor.  He teams up with Mouch from Venice, Italy to bring us a brilliant, calculated dancefloor builder with dreamy arpeggios and ice-cold sci-fi fx and atmospherics – essential!

DRUNK020 Ekoplekz – Stalag Zero / Distended Dub 12″ Vinyl

Punch Drunk, Bristol’s esteemed electronic music imprint, celebrates it’s 20th release with a strictly limited edition 12″ single. This double A-side is also the official debut release by shadowy Bristol-based experimental electronic musician Ekoplekz. As such, it represents something of a departure for the label, for here is an artist who shuns modern digital production techniques in favour of primitive analogue devices, lo-fi cassette recorders and a spontaneous, improvised approach to composition. Taking inspiration from ‘Radiophonic’ soundtracks, early dub reggae, krautrock and post-punk D.I.Y. experimentors like Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle and Robert Rental, Ekoplekz is intent on introducing a new generation to the kind of raw eruptions of sound that first gave birth to the UK’s electronic underground over 30 years ago.

His follow-up release, ‘Untitled Future Funk EP’, was all the talk on the blogs and his remix of Baby D’s ‘Let me be your Fantasy’ has been hailed as one of the hallmark dubstep tracks of 2010. With each new release Mensah’s studio skills and fresh thinking stand out ever clearer. This latest offering will be no disappointment… A. DIGITAL DREAMER A dreamy synth-line commences ‘Digital Dreamer’, which immediately sets the scene for one of Mensah’s more ethereal productions. The harmonic lead-line builds into an other-worldly riff before releasing that tripped-out, bouncing bass rhythm. Synths let loose overhead, twisting and turning the track into the funky number that it is. Once again, something different from the man like Mensah… AA1. KASHMIR (W/NOAH D) Teaming up with US producer, Noah D, the duo creates an echoey and foreboding backdrop to ‘Kashmir’. The mystic vibe quickly graduates with a captivating bassline, weaving its way through the frequencies. Kashmir has achieved that perfect balance between being musicallyintriguing and packing punch for the dancefloor. AA2. BIG UP THE GOONS A familiar arpeggio gently makes way for a gully-goon vocal. You’re then met with a shuddering bassline that goes a long way to create a haunting yet driven soundtrack. Forwardmoving and weighty, the mid-section provides a brief pause for reflection before reverting back to fully-flexed low-end funk.

AA2 Mensah – Big Up The Goons

It will take you on a journey through many different moods and styles of Drum and Bass. From Light to Dark this album has everything! Once Again! Get bitten!!! The concept behind Vampire Records is the relation between the nocturnal behavior of Clubbers and Vampires. Vampire has constant evolution and is a platform for established artists and up and coming talent. The birth of the label was at the end of 2006. It has grown from strength to strength over the last couple of years. Vampire is still growing to this day but it has staying power in the world of Drum and Bass. It is up to its 10th single release and on April 1st 2009 it released its first label album “Once Bitten Twice High”. All releases on the label are still selling which proves that the music has shelf life and is non-disposable. It was very important to Phil Source at the birth of the label that it would have credibility with the old school, as well as the new breed of Drum and Bass fan.

Lung : Afterlife / Time – 19-year-old discovery Lung, from Cardiff has only been producing for a short time but has managed to make some of the most moving sounds this year. Having already featured on Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBCs Radio 1 Experimental show, he’s been slowly building a grassroots following through two local DJ residencies and online support (dubstepforum.com) and will undoubtedly reach a much bigger audience as his first release on Kokeshi takes flight. ‘Afterlife’ features layers of pads and effects with an eerie vocal and gut wrenching sub. Support on Radio 1, and various UK and international web and college radio stations. One for the floor, and one for the ipod. ‘Time’ offers a nod to old school d’n’b/jungle with its breaks and its piano riff, yet Lung still pulls off his signature emo-dub-tastic style with ease, making it sound new and fresh. DKX001 66/31 – binary sequence Dark Arx 12″ Vinyl
For its debut release, Dark Arx presents a 3-track single of gritty, emotive electronic music by Binary Sequence. Binary Sequence operates in the margins of UK dubstep channelling his influences through a painstaking process of deconstruction and distortion. The resulting tracks are gems of electronica, simultaneously beautiful and sonically fierce. Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).
DKX002 by Dark Arx will be released in March 2010.

MEDI026 My World – Mizz Beats Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Set to shine in 2010, Mizz Beats is the 22 year-old from Hackney (East London) who aided and abetted labelmate Silkie in the creation of one of this year’s certified bangers: ‘Purple Love’. Earning her stripes in the midst of the UK’s grime scene, she has already produced for the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Jammer and Lady Sovereign and she is undoubtedly one of the Anti Social Entertainment clique’s brightest prospects alongside Quest, Silkie, Kromestar, J5, Harry Craze and Heny G. Mizzy’s debut 12” on DEEP MEDi Musik showcases both her versatility and a lightness of touch that belies her years. ‘My World’ marries sloping half-step drums, offhand tom rolls and cleverly constructed synth work, conjuring a wickedly melodious groove. On the flip, ‘The Jester’ zips off in a different direction, carried by tougher, stripped-back drums and myriad 8-bit Gameboy bleeps, zaps and bumps. An altogether clubbier affair, but no less sophisticated, fans of Gemmy and Joker will undoubtedly approve.

3024006 Remixes 1/2 – Martyn 3024 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Ending the brief hiatus that followed the ‘Great Lengths’ LP and accompanying world tour Martyn and 3024 usher in the new decade with a brace of remixes from the deepest recesses of the quasi-house community. First out the gates is 3024-006, helmed by a pair of artists as unique as they are elusive; Zomby and Redshape. Easily one of the most talked about new producers of the last few years Zomby continues to evolve upwards and out, never settling on a particular style and constantly twisting the technicolour DNA of his output. Those smeared neon fingerprints are all over his reworking of Hear Me’ which lights up clattering percussion and a black hole of a bass drop with layers of sparkling neon crystal SID chip melodies. Tackling ‘Seventy Four’ on the flip side is determinedly enigmatic Techno classicist Redshape. Responsible for a string of unashamedly human releases since 2006, his rich organic sound has recently caught the imagination of a 4×4 scene beginning to look beyond icy [and boring] minimalism for inspiration. A highlight of the forthcoming Fabric 50: Martyn mix CD, the original’s glowering pulse is carefully built on with walls of murky analogue warmth and hissing industrial ambience before reaching a monolithic climax.
An integral part of every 3024 release, Erosie once again blesses this release with his inimitable visual style switching up to a monochrome design this time around.

a Martyn – Hear Me (Zomby mix)
b Martyn – Seventy Four (Redshape mix)

STUCK10PR01 Stuck (Various Production & Guido Remixes) – Lauren Pritchard Island Records 10″ Vinyl
Super limited 10” of Stuck Various Production & Guido Remixes. Once upon a time there was a girl called Lauren. She lived in grassy, green Madison County, Tennessee where people are as sweet as the tea they make. She’d sing songs in her yard and run around with ballerinas, big kitty cats and her brothers all the livelong day. One winter evening Lauren decided she wanted a change of scenery. She wanted to leave her comfortable grasslands and start a joyride. She traveled far to La La land and danced with the faeries in Beverly Hills, all the while humming along to Bob Marley and playing pianos. Then Lauren ventured to Gotham City(out of a pure and deep love for Batman)to take to the stages of the great White Way as a long-haired bohemian. Now 6 years, 5 tattoos, 4 electric tea kettles, 3 cities, 2 tours and 1 Nord keyboard later, she’s in the bushes with the shepherds of London, singing of her homeland with the Lolo Army ready for the next round of life attacks. Lauren knows life is first-rate come what may. The End.

DVA004 The Jelly Roll EP – Scratcha DVA DVA Music 12″ Vinyl
Limited Edition Purple Vinyl. Scratcha DVA is not just the charismatic host of Rinse Fm’s breakfast show, he’s one of the UK’s most accomplished producers. An associate of Terror Danjah from the late 90′s, DVA supplied dubs to Dj Slimzee during grimes early days and has produced for luminaries of the scene like Wiley, Trim, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and more. More recently Scratcha has collaborated with beacons of the UK Funky scene like Roska, Cooly G, D-Malice and more while still releasing grime anthems like ‘Nasty Nasty Nasty’ and ‘Bullet Ago Fly’. The Jelly Roll Ep has already gained support from Marcus Nasty, Geeneus, Joker, Kode 9, Cooly G, Sinden and more. Built around a super-synthetic bassline its title track sqirms and shakes around stinging snares whilst ‘Guro Triba’ is a little on the more conventional side of House & Funky. Remixes comes from True Tigers Sukh Knight, who gives Nasty Nasty Nasty the creeping dubstep treatment, whilst Funky don Roska gives it his unique “Kicks and Snares” midas touch.
