New D ‘n’ B CD

VAMPCDLP2UK002 Drumz of the Damned (2xCD) – Various Artists Vampire Records CD x 2
Vampire Records is a label created by Phil Aslett formerly of Source Direct. The label has been set up to release Drum and Bass music of all styles and will feature many different artists. The concept behind Vampire Records is the relation between the nocturnal behavior of Clubbers and Vampires. Vampire has constant evolution and is a platform for established artists and up and coming talent. The birth of the label was at the end of 2006. It has grown from strength to strength over the last couple of years. Vampire is still growing to this day but it has staying power in the world of Drum and Bass. It is up to its 10th single release and on April 1st 2009 it released its first label album “Once Bitten Twice High”. All releases on the label are still selling which proves that the music has shelf life and is non-disposable. It was very important to Phil Source at the birth of the label that it would have credibility with the old school, as well as the new breed of Drum and Bass fan. The Album “Drumz of the Damned” is the perfect follow up to “Once Bitten Twice High”. It continues the deep journey into the world of Vampire Records. This time it has 22 exclusive tracks and 2 remixes. It will take you on a journey through many different moods and styles of Drum and Bass. From Light to Dark this album has everything! Once Again! ‘From Deep Space’ presents a full-force journey through state-of-the-art broken beats and sonic wizardry that will have the most ardent of tech-specialists nodding their heads in appreciation. From the downbeat excursions of the opening track ‘Channel Feel’ and

On hearing tracks such as ‘Non Human’ and ‘Interplay’ it’snot hard to see why Phace & Misanthrop are regularly featured in DJ sets of Andy C, Noisia, Friction, Ed Rush and Optical right the way through to the likes of Alix Perez and dBridge.

New D ‘n’ B Releases

EXIT018 Inner Disbelief – dBridge Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. This track screams out classic dBridge in every sense with its clever use of musical stabs, eerie atmospheres and growling sub bass.

SS014 The Gavel / Silent Witness – Gremlinz Ft. Aspect / Theory Soothsayer Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Soothsayer emerges from a brief slumber With SS014 Gremlinz feat. Aspect ‘The Gavel’ b/w Theory – ‘Silent Witness’. Renegade Hardware, Metalheadz veteran Gremlinz serves up a massive slab of horseman stylee amen madness in the form of ‘The Gavel’. After honing his skills for a barrage of labels like Xtinction Agenda, Horizons, and Outsider, Gremlinz and coconspiritor Aspect have exorcised their inner demons with ‘The Gavel’ with each stab thereby bludgeoning truth and justice into the ears of all listeners. Hard, dark jungle for the roughnecks!! Theory came to prominence with several key signings to prestigious labels like Digital’s Function and Vibez offshoot, 13 Music. In that time this Midlands boy has developed an outright punishing approach to heavy dubwize riddims. ‘Silent Witness’ delivers the riddim and bruise disgusting reece basslines, heavy tribal percussion, and enough low end to lower IQs for years to come! Wear a chest protector!

New D ‘n’ B Promos

C4CLTDUK003 Something Else Sensor (Break Remix) – Cause 4 Concern C4C Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finished copy. SOMETHING ELSE / SENSOR – BREAK REMIX. Already established and exemplary in the tricky art of tune fusion, here badman Break takes two of C4C’s older numbers to create a monstrous slice of music: he’s lifted the best parts from both tracks and beefed it all up with some Break style biz, resulting in a relentless roller that drops twice to hit you hard in all the right places.
SOUL – N.PHECT REMIX There’s no doubt that halfstep tunes are hot right now, but most of them are original compositions, not remixes. Here N.Phect reinterprets Soul and strips it of its speed and intensity, but not its substance. Now it has a brand new attitude and tempo, while that unmistakable C4C funk is retained and keeps things recognisable. Future Funk.
DJ Support: Andy C, Friction, Hype, Bailey, Prolix, Break, Goldie, Gridlok, Fierce, Concord Dawn, Ed Rush, Bad Company, plus many more…

C4CUKPD002 Scare Tactics (Picture Disc) – Cause 4 Concern C4C Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Limited Edition picture Disc. Definitely designed to intimidate those weak of will, Scare Tactics will also dominate any dancefloor you care to drop it on. Bruising beats and a twistedly belligerent bassline combine to bully the crap out of your ears in C4C’s typically ruthlessly efficient style. ‘Born Dead’ Sounding like the score for some sort of dystopian future where machines rule man, Born Dead is a foreboding, offbeat, synthetic and sinister tune. Samples swirl around your head while the bassline rises from the metallic mire to grab at your feet. Future filth indeed. DJ Support: Andy C, Friction, Hype, Bailey, Goldie, Gridlok, Fierce, Concord Dawn, Dieselboy, Prolix, Ed Rush, Bad Company plus many more…

CRITLP04S A Wandering Journal Album Sampler – Sabre Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. As we prepare for what will undoubtedly be one of the album highlights of 2010 Critical Music let slip a mouth-watering 12” sampler to turn all eyes in the direction of one of the most respected producers in the game, Sabre. Two very different tracks that’ll leave you counting the days until his album ‘A Wandering Journal’ finally drops in late March. First up ‘Marvel’ sees Sabre opting for the now infamous kick and rim-shot sound, a movement he’s played a vital part in developing. A deft hand and in-depth studio knowledge lets the music drift deep into the subconscious with its subtle sparse but deadly bass, fx and mid-range tweaks creating an uneasy sci-fi soundscape. Perfectly executed. Flip over and Sabre teams up with the Subtitles-signed Ulterior Motive to take the vibes back to the dance floor. ‘Barefoot’ is a killer, make no mistake, with its bouncing b-line that changes up throughout and crisp percussion that’ll have the heads skanking hard. Fans of the Ed Rush & Optical’s ‘Wormhole’ era take note, this one’ll get you twisted. DJ support from Friction, Rockwell, Break, Kasra, Cyantific, Spectrasoul, Marky, Nu Tone, Logistics and more.

EXIT020 Peach Fuzz – System Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Mark System is by no means a newcomer to the music world having been performing as an MC and producing music for labels such as Digital Soundboy and Shogun Audio amongst others for over a decade. His debut on Exit Records consists of two tracks which underline his production skills and originality in sound design and arrangement. On the A-Side we have “Peach Fuzz”. A track created and named by System after attending and gaining inspiration from Carl Cox’s closing party at Space. He claims that Danny Tenaglia’s set stimulated him to think about new ways of approaching tracks. “Peach Fuzz“ was the result and what a result it was. This track oozes originality and is a pearl in the boxes of many top DJs at the moment such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Ed Rush, Commix, Friction etc. On the B-side we have “Voices” from System, which is an elaborate workout of glitchy beats, choppy break edits and curious melodies. This track is far from formulaic, having been started as an experiment to vent creative juices with no intention of it leaving his computer, were glad it did!

AA System – The Voices

HEDGE023 Eastern Underground (Bungle RMX) / (Influx UK Edit Mix) – Dub Tao Hard Edged 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Berlin’s premiere Drum and Bass label returns with an original and a remix of label stalwarts Dub Tao. This duo has helped to keep Hard:edged at the forefront of the German Drum and Bass scene. Their latest offering comes in the form of, ‘East Of The Underground’. Backed with a remix from Brazilian bad boy, Bungle; who takes matter into his own hands with a stellar remix, creating a delicious double A-sided package. First up is Mr. Bungle, who rides the sample over shattering breaks, while breathing life into the tune via a tight rhythmically undulating bass line. Clever synth work is also put to use on this nearly essential tool. This is a track that possesses as much musicality as it does excitement. Dub Tao start the original off with a classic two step break, letting the samples and atmospheres create a tension before a thunderous bass drop. Dub Tao, certainly don’t need any help getting their sound tight, but who would turn down a little mixing magic from Formation’s soul-man Influx Uk. He deftly applies his ability to work within the realms of melodic Drum and Bass, while still adding some grit and edge. A skill the DT boys are quickly learning themselves. This EP most certainly posses a plethora of versatility which will aid it in finding a place in the DJ sets of many and blaring out of the speakers on a dance floor near you.

More recently Rob Smith in his RSD guise is back in the international frame with dubstep releases on labels such as Tectonic, Earwax and Punch Drunk culminating in a CD compilation ‘Good Energy’ on Punch Drunk in 2009. This new Unearthed 12″ features two unmissable and in demand original Bristol 2 step garage anthems from 2002. ‘this ere one design a lick yuh flat pon yuh back’

SENSELESS011 You Know – Ghosttown ft Badness & Dajla Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Wonky dancefloor dancehall from Ghosttown featuring Badness, mix from DZ, Like his spectral namesake Simon Booth aka Ghosttown has spent the last few years obscured, half out of sight as a producer hiring out his futuristic beat-science to a string of heavy hitting MCs including Foreign Beggars here in the UK and a clutch of artists across the Atlantic including Guilty Simpson, Oh No, Frank and Dank and Dudley Perkins from the Dilla/Stones Throw axis of the hip hop spectrum.
His debut release started life like most of his productions, on a beat tape with another 80 or so one minute tracks, all vital snapshots charged with the excitement of what might happen with the right MC but there was something special about the original ‘Greezy’. It wires up squelching formant synths to insistent, minimal drums sounding like a 2010 UK-bass update to Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ but at 145 BPM with speaker damaging sub.
This devastating but unusual collision of sounds needed a versatile MC and Badness was top of the list. Known for his early work with Lava Unit and Terror Danjah as well as last year’s carnival smash ‘Message is Love’ with Jammer and Silverlink Birmingham born Badness’ star is on the rise. ‘You Know’ as the track became features his signature double time bashment/grime flow and a killer hook sung by cosmic-soul powerhouse Dajla. The Parisian born singer is a Radio Nova favourite who has collaborated with Wax Tailor, Foreign Beggars and celebrated hip hop poet Anthony Joseph. The resulting track is unmistakably UK but with a bashment flavour, wonky dancehall? The vinyl remix comes from DZ (Hot Flush/Tru Tiger) who delivers a mix that turbo charges the dancefloor elements of the track to come up with multi coloured low end work out. Senseless will release a Ghosttown album in summer 2010 featuring vocalists including Frank & Dank, Olivier Daysoul, Badness, YT, Navigator, Killa P and more. 2010 is the year the Ghost comes to life.
PLAYS FROM: Mistajam on 1xtra, Review in Mixmag, Skream, Vex’d, Baobinga, Tomb Crew, Starkey, Warlock, Kanji Kinetic, Sterotyp, Laurent Garnier.

ROTTUN005 Retreat (Excision Remix) – Datsik & Excision Rottun 12″ Vinyl
Two of the hottest producers at the moment have to be Datsik and Excision and when they get together they make some of the most innovative sounding music. Think of the type of music played at an acid filled Transformers rave and you might have some sort of idea what it may sound like. Two Step drum patterns, Crazy morphing synth lines with freakish incidentals and heavy hitting basslines. Any robots heaven. So corrupt it could send Cillit Bang out of business.

RAD001 Medicate – Logos Radial Productions 12″ Vinyl
Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction. ‘Medicate’ has received DJ support from LV (Hyperdub), Ben UFO (Hessle Audio), Pangaea (Hessle Audio, Hotflush), Blackdown (Keysound), Mick Pressure (Naked Lunch), Narcossist/Kowton (Keysound)
Blackdown (Keysound): “a lost gem – really harks back to an era of dubstep that is increasingly disappearing”
Ben UFO (Hessle Audio): “both sides of the release are great. Uncompromisingly eyes down vibes”

EAST001 Wile Out /My DJ – Zinc feat Ms Dynamite / Zinc & Benga feat Ms Dynamite Zinc Music 12″ Vinyl
Limited edition promo Vinyl. The single’s lead track Wile Out is a hypnotic, highly addictive workout featuring triple-MOBO, double- Brit and Mercury Music Prize winner Ms Dynamite switching effortlessly between soulful singing and rapid-fire ragga chat. STUCK10PR01 Stuck (Various Production & Guido Remixes) – Lauren Pritchard Island Records 10″ Vinyl
Super limited 10” of Stuck Various Production & Guido Remixes. Once upon a time there was a girl called Lauren. She lived in grassy, green Madison County, Tennessee where people are as sweet as the tea they make. She’d sing songs in her yard and run around with ballerinas, big kitty cats and her brothers all the livelong day. One winter evening Lauren decided she wanted a change of scenery. She wanted to leave her comfortable grasslands and start a joyride. She traveled far to La La land and danced with the faeries in Beverly Hills, all the while humming along to Bob Marley and playing pianos. Then Lauren ventured to Gotham City(out of a pure and deep love for Batman)to take to the stages of the great White Way as a long-haired bohemian. Now 6 years, 5 tattoos, 4 electric tea kettles, 3 cities, 2 tours and 1 Nord keyboard later, she’s in the bushes with the shepherds of London, singing of her homeland with the Lolo Army ready for the next round of life attacks. Lauren knows life is first-rate come what may. The End.

SFS001 Never – Eprom Surefire Productions LLC 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. San Francisco, CA’s Surefire Sound starts off the new decade with a bang and launches their brand new label with an energetic single by EPROM. A fast rising West Coast bass technician, DJ and producer Sander Dennis a.k.a. EPROM delivers funky, techy four-four beats on “Never.”
EPROM’s original mix opens with rattling hi-hats and a hushed female vocal accented by EPROM’s patented twitchy synths. A hefty kick drops, braced by a thick, bouncy mid-range bass pattern. Like recent tracks by Untold or Ramadanman, “Never” blurs the divisions between dubstep, funky, techno and garage to form an irresistible new creation.
Hyped newcomer FaltyDL had a breakthrough year in 2009. The New Yorker introduced his versatile soulful electronic styles on a slew of singles for Planet Mu and Ramp. His Rephresh mix is a moody, shuffling reconstruction that features echoing samples, an infectious start-stop rhythm and mighty bass sweeps. DL’s mix is built for maximum club pressure.
About Surefire Sound:
Surefire Sound is a new record label presented by the Surefire music group whose goal is to showcase upcoming and established talent in electronic music. The label is part of a collection of projects under the Surefire banner including a booking agency, PR firm, and events management division. The releases promise an array of sounds spanning genres, appealing to home listeners and dance floors alike.

PROPH118 Sincere (Nero Remix) – MJ Cole Prolific Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Nero’s consistent releases have made them one of the most talked about acts in dancemusic. Many would have said that Sincere was one of those classics that shouldn’t be touched. The original is still the classic it always was but this Nero remix has completely opened it up and added their turbo charged dubstep energy . Their remix of the Streets’ tune ‘Blinded by the Lights’ was a massive radio hit as well as a dancefloor smasher played by DJ’s from Chase and Status and Skream to Tiesto and Diplo. More recently Nero have remixed La Roux and Deadmau5 to devastating effect.

Finally releaesd on Vinyl fully (after a limited one sided promo run last year) Benga’s remix of G Squad’s ‘Assumptions’ is a darker and moodier refix. Skream coming out with the Kinky on the flip. This is one tune you probably would have to turn down if you still live with your parents!

Coming soon: Scuba – “Triangulation” LP (HFCD003 / HFLP003)

Posted 01 February 2010 | By Editor | Categories: news, reviews, tracks | 1 Comment

Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has been at the forefront of the dubstep scene since its birth. Having founded the innovative and influential Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, he has continually brought colour and depth to an advancing genre, expanding its sonic structure and increasing its influence on the wider electronic scene. Through Scuba and seminal work by central figures including Distance, Vex’d and more recently Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison, Hotflush remains crucial to the immediate moment and the developing future of the most exciting aspects of electronic music.

Following the first Scuba LP, A Mutual Antipathy (2008), and the more recent Aesaunic EP (2009), this album takes the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But Triangulation moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive.

You Got Me and So You Think You’re Special, released as an advance 12”, reflect the range of the album with the huge bass and frenetic energy of the former contrasting with the melancholic atmospheres and melodies of the latter. The listless beauty of Before, the aggressively percussive Minerals and the hyperactive electro of On Deck provide further stylistic variation, but this is not simply a collection of tracks – for the best sonic results this album should be listened to in full.

2009 in review…

Posted 22 December 2009 | By Editor | Categories: news, reviews, tracks, video | No Comments

It’s that time of the year when music related blog’s get their chart heads on and review 2009 with their top albums and singles, we tried something a little similar when S.T. Holdings staff members recently picked their ‘Top 3 Tracks of the Year’: http://www.stholdings.co.uk/2009/12/02/s-t-holdings-staff-charts-2009/

On perusing around the internet at the various charts we have found a mountain of accolades for some of the labels we have been representing, here’s a short run down of some of the finest records this year according to the masses and the music moguls:

HFT009
Joy Orbison
Hyph Mngo

It’s been a meteoric rise to fame for Joy Orbison, a release picked up by Hotflush Recordings (ran by Scuba) and released on his more techno orientated sub-label (HFT), first raved about by Martin Blackdown for his Pitchfork Blog and since then has completely blown up with Joy being tipped for the top in 2010 by the BBC Music Longlist: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/8388584.stm

The tune has also been picked up on by the NME who voted the track their 18th (out of 50) ‘Best Tracks of the Year’: http://www.nme.com/list/50-best-tracks-of-2009/159979/page/4

Boomkat follow suit and position the track No.9 out of 100 in the ‘Tracks of the Year’: http://www.boomkat.com/charts.cfm?id=517&gID=10

We await to hear the development of Mr. Orbison’s sound in 2010…..

3024005
Martyn
Great Lengths LP

Martyn’s debut LP was a big success and the internet was flooded with information and hype about the album, his crossover from Drum & Bass to the more techno/house influenced Dubstep sound was great timing and he soon became the figure at the forefront of that particular sound.

It has won alot of ‘awards’ this year across many sites, including no.3 in Resident Advisors ‘Top 20 Albums of 2009′: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1121

12th in FACT Magazine’s ‘Top 100 Album’s of 2009′: http://www.factmagazine.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4134&Itemid=103&limit=1&limitstart=5

A mention in the ‘Lost 9 of 2009′ section on Drowned In Sound: http://drownedinsound.com/in_depth/4138671-lost-9-of-09-2-2562-unbalance?2009

16th in Boomkat’s ‘Top 100 Album’s of 2009′: http://www.boomkat.com/charts.cfm?id=516&gID=10

Watch out for Martyn’s forthcoming releases coming in 2010, first will be a 2 part remix release, details here: http://www.stholdings.co.uk/2009/11/30/forthcoming-on-3024-martyn-the-remixes/

RAMP022LP
Zomby
One Foot Ahead Of The Other

Ramp Recordings have had a host of big releases this year, notably the Zomby Mini-LP which featured artwork by  Kate Moross taking the 8-bit Nintendo sounds to the extreme and cementing himself as one of the artists at the forefront of electronic music. Songs supported by the likes of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe and Kissy Sell Out on Radio 1.

FACT Magazine voted it No.7 of their ‘Best 40 Albums of 2009′: http://www.factmagazine.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=4134&Itemid=103&limit=1&limitstart=6

Boomkat voted it No.3 in their ‘Top 100 Albums of 2009′: http://www.boomkat.com/charts.cfm?id=516&gID=10

More to come from Zomby no doubt in 2010!

DRUNKCD002
Peverelist
Jarvik Mindstate

Peverelist’s debut album finally landed on his own Punch Drunk imprint recently, a producer with relatively few releases to his name but always quality over quantity, a well renowned producer who has worked with Shackleton, Appleblim and has performed remixes for the likes of Pole, along with Martyn he is one of the forerunners of the Techno influenced Dubstep sound.

Resident Advisor made it No.19 in their ‘Best 20 Albums of 2009′ list: http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1121

Boomkat made it No.85 in their ‘Top 100 Albums of 2009′: http://www.boomkat.com/charts.cfm?id=516&gID=10

Expect big things from Punch Drunk in 2010, a Hyetal & Shortstuff 12″ is due for release on 18th January 2010.

KAP004
Joker & Ginz
Purple City

Kapsize, the Bristol based label co-run by Joker and Pinch’s Multiverse has been showcasing some huge Joker productions this year, notably ‘Purple City’ by Joker & Ginz. Joker has gone from strength to strength this year and is set to blow big time next year, having headlined the Sonar dubstep stage and undertaken some high profile remix work.

XLR8R voted it amongst their ‘Best of 2009′ list: http://www.xlr8r.com/features/2009/12/bumpin

Pitchfork voted for it amongst their ‘Best 100 Tracks of 2009′: http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/7742-the-top-100-tracks-of-2009/5/

Here’s looking forward to 2010.

We’ll leave you for the year with some previews of some releases you can expect to see released in January 2010:

Merry Christmas!

EXITCD004 Live For Never LP (CD Format) – Consequence Exit Records CD
Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

ok017
OK017 Antique Antic / King Stays King – Martsman / Raiden & Khanage Offkey 12″ Vinyl
Raiden’s label always comes with something different from the usual D&B formula rubbish. Martsman’s track is very impressive, with his refreshing future sound. On the other side it’s business as usual from Raiden with help from Khanage, its funky, and not as full on as normal, but again right at the cutting edge. Martsman got into Drum&Bass around the end of the 90s. Debuting on New York based Offshore Recordings in 2005, he released on smaller as well as established labels like Alphacut Records or Counter Intelligence in the following years. In 2008, tracks on Warm Communications and Hospital Records’ sub label Med School attract the attention of a steadily growing audience also from outside the Drum&Bass scene.

nonvogue004
NONVOGUE004 Big Skeleton LP (Vinyl Version) – The Upbeats Non Vogue 12″ Vinyl x 2
If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughter-induced abdominal muscles pains. In this particular scenario, their inspiration was a whispered Brazilian ghetto story related to them by a friend. The story of the Caveraos (English translation: Big Skeleton), a super-tank full of Navy Seal trained Brazilian gang members known to terrorise the favelas of Rio De Janeiro, or on good days, distribute Nike sneakers and free cable. Sounds fucked up right? Anyway, as you’ve probably gathered by now, The Upbeats were suitable taken with this story, and having already floated the idea of a haunted-house album, decided to title their third album Big Skeleton, out of homage to the Caveraos; and horror in general.

What the DJ’s are saying!

Marcus Intalex: “Two of the most innovative and versatile producers on todays scene. Whenever I get something new from these guys I instantly stop what I’m doing, knowing full well I am just about to hear something totally fresh.”

Dieselboy: “Once again redefining the future sound of neuro funk nastiness. Buy on sight!”

Ed Rush: “Everything these guys do demands immediate attention. Drop whatever you’re doing and go grab Big Skeleton… sick, sick, sick! They specialize in dance floor artillery of serious weight as we all know from their releases in the past. This album is no different and is a brilliant testimony to their talents. Also includes one of the best dubstep tunes I ever heard… Ship It!”

Be it the haunted click’n’bass soul of ‘Bones’ (featuring Ned Worboys of Harbour City Electric), the sub-grinding, stream-ofconsciousness narrative driven breakbeat insanity of ‘Carousel’ (featuring MC Kemo from Germany), their speaker-rupturing foray into dubstep on ‘Macabre’ (co-produced by the mysterious Crushington) or the drum’n’folk atmospherics of ‘Through The Night’ (featuring award-winning country singer Jess Chambers); Big Skeleton lives in equal balance between the headphone headspace and the mindset of the club, which is a rare and terrifyingly beautiful combination in drum’n’bass. And that’s not even touching on the collaborations with State of Mind or Japanese rapper Cardz. With Big Skeleton, The Upbeats wake the dead, and the whispered terror walks once again.
DON’T SAY WE DIDN’T WARN YOU.

a The Upbeats – Big Skeleton
b The Upbeats – Laser Crypt
c The Upbeats – Carousel (Feat. Kemo)
d The Upbeats – The Unearthly

Now SPL returns to the Drum and Bass fold and does not disappoint. SPL, aka Sam Pool, has created the perfect blend of illusion, reality, precision and chaos within his first solo LP. The self-titled ‘SPL’ LP either sweeps the listener into worlds built of light and mystery, or drags them into the depths of a bass-filled hell. Lost Soul’s first LP release, ‘SPL,’ is a daringly original take on hard and dark music. With 8 tracks creating a symphony of chemically fueled emotion, ebbing and flowing between aggression and release, it’s no wonder why there is already a buzz within the international community of producers and fans alike.
‘I want to return depth and focus to dark drum and bass and give people who are turned off by the formulaic horror of today’s dark music something that they can identify with’ —SPL—
‘Epic and brutal machine funk’ —Dieselboy—
‘The most refreshing thing I have heard this year… SPLendidly produced’ —Limewax—
‘SPL has outdone himself, presenting an album that has depth as well as danceability’ —The Panacea—
There is a feeling of digitally mechanized destruction to the art within tracks like ‘Run From the Feeling’ and ‘It Will Be Different,’ pushing the audience over the edge of what was thought possible with Drum and Bass. Or the driving and sometimes brash ‘Angels’ or ‘Distance’ which fools the listener into thinking something beautiful lies beneath, just before an unexpected change in architecture sends them screaming for more low frequency mayhem. And that’s just to name a few. ‘Sins of the Streets’ has been in my box from the day I got it. I thought it was going to be the best tune on the Album. Then I got hit with ‘Juggernaut’ and ‘Distance,’ both completely disgusting! Definitely going to get some mileage out of this fantastic album for a long time to come, some excellent cuts on here.’ —Ed Rush—
‘Futuristic, funky, filthy are just three words I could use to describe SPL’s debut album. Dance floor smasher after dance floor smasher.. Essential.’ —Audio Freak Cult—
The LP itself has a total of 8 tracks bursting with ear candy and ready to lay waste to any system or individual daring enough drop the needle or load the disk.

a SPL – Juggernaut
b SPL – Angels
c SPL – Distance
d SPL – Guardian
e SPL – Sins of the Streets

EXITLP004 Live For Never LP (Vinyl Format) – Consequence Exit Records 12″ Vinyl x 4

A devoted follower of techno-influenced drum & bass, Silent Witness adds a new edge & attitude, combining elements of the deep & uplifting within his tear-out dance floor productions. Not content with the constrictions of working at the whirly BPM’s of drum & bass, Silent Witness has also branched out into house music, joining forces with Dropkick to establish the M3 Project whose debut ‘A Better Man’ EP is available on Silicone Soul’s Darkroom Dubs. He also continues to embrace his passion as a guitarist, playing on many of his own productions.

citruslp004
CITRUSLP004 Venom LP – Jade Citrus Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 4
Hungary is the fresh birthplace of so many top producers within the DnB scene.. Mindscape, Matt-U, Chris SU, SKC. But this one producer has managed to produce so many killer tracks Citrus could not just leave it alone… This Producer is Jade. And his Venom LP is the result of his hard work. A deadly collection of productions that, once injected into the eardrum will grasp the host track by track until there isn’t anything left! The LP starts off with the track suitably named “No Cure”… A Lethal tune that will keep you grasping for air every time. This Tech’d out battering-ram is made for even the biggest powerhouses to get blown to pieces in just a single hit. “Hit em in between the eyes” click click BOOM! Then flip it over for the title track “Venom” where Jade teams up with the legendary Rymetyme! This time things get different as the rugged sounds will take down venues limb by limb like you haven’t heard before. Heavy over the top Neuro sounds rampage through the speakers to break loose the mayhem! Disc 2 contains the Icicle rework of “This Is My World” (the original features on the sampler) stripping down the original to an ice cold minimalist sound. Oldskool tech-steppin vibes are definitely the case here but with an upgraded 2009 feel! For side 4 Jade teams up with long-time producer friend Matt-U. They did their first release together so this was a logical step. And if logical could sound so phat as this. then logical is the way to go. Moblaw is a straight up elbow greaser that’ll make you get messy on the dance floor. The funk just oozes off this tight production that’ll make you scream for more! Then on to disc 3… where Jade remixes three of his best friends. namely the Dutch trio that’s Black Sun Empire. This remix tributes the trio as they where the first ones to recognise the skill of Jade’s production. But now its time to repay the favour as his remix gives stasis that extra piece of fire it needed as it turns into a piece of dance floor filth like no other. Have the tables turned? Then for the flip Jade teams up with another group of comrades, namely the Mindscape boys! These guys aren’t by all means strangers to the Citrus label so their track “Banshee” fits on here like Rum & Coke. Just listen and let yourself get transported to the early 2000 era of DnB. But with a heavy 2009 taste. Then for the final disc. Jade goes all solo style with Forged Reality. this shows how versatile Jade can be when he’s alone in the studio. half step, rolling this one goes from the one to the next without any trouble. Then for the last one.. Jade doesn’t sees the last tune to be a tune to be neglected. So on this one he goes all out with Mindscape & Axiom! Heavy synthy basslines rip open the track just be pummelled by the beat towering beats that make this tune a pounder beyond proportions!

c Jade – No Cure
d Jade feat. RymeTyme – Venom
e Jade – This Is My World (Icicle remix)

KGO002 The Love Quadrant – Space Dimension Controller Kinnego Records 12″ Vinyl
Electronic / Dubstep label Kinnego Records started by Boxcutter out of Northern Ireland is back! After the success of the first release (by Boxcutter himself) he introduces the masses to a producer named ‘Space Dimension Controller’….the techno funk alias of 19- year-old Jack Hamill. Following on perfectly from Boxcutter and Kinnego Flux’s “A Familiar Sound” on KGO001, it features 2 tracks of deep, loved-up electro. Equally inspired by both the tape warped soundtrack to Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace and early Aphex Twin, Jack’s all-analogue production gives his tracks a timeless sound that’s a mile away from contemporary electro and house. The beats are low slung and funky, and the melodies are addictive and show a natural flair. On “The Love Quadrant”, a girl / boy vocal exchange sets the scene while the track builds momentum, before the whole thing spaces off on a sweet minimoog solo. On the flip, “Electropod-250 Collision” has a deep 808 pulse and flanged bass, topped off with Detroit-inspired melodies and blurred out reverbs.

New Skweee Releases

HRMN10 Harmönia Presents: International Skweee Vol. 2. – Various Harmonia 12″ Vinyl
LP (limited edition of definitely-not-enuff-copies), The eagerly awaited sequel of Harmönia’s International Skw*** -compilation has finally landed! Once again Harmönia’s artists are setting new standards for electronic dance music. Unlike the blood suckin’ vampires of brain dead club music of today, these cats have been mastering their art in silence and are just about to teleport mankind back to the zone of full funkativity! The Funkentelechy has been found once again! 12 artists – 10 tracks of the finest analogue soul. International Skweee Vol. 2 opens with the smokey P-Funk stylings of our favourite Frenchman: Wankers United! You can definitely hear the atomic dog barking. Skweeemasters Beem and Joxaren have united their forces for the first time in history and produced a next generation banger of harsh acid funk. AC/DC goes Skweee? Swedish-Iranian Uday is back and this time with a message. The shah of Middle Eastern electro has teamed up with an unknown Iranian woman to bring us this revolutionary piece of Arabian funk with a message of strength and democracy: “Boland Shin” (Rise Up)! A-side is wrapped up with the flute-driven disturbed grime of Coco Bryce’s “Ghetto Freaks” and Finnish noise-generator Claws Cousteau’s “North State of Mind” which is a party rockin’ example of his aggressive Stylophone crunk. B-side opens with the amazing Arab-influenced RnB of Easy and The Center of Universe. “Hamada” sounds like Erkin Koray teaming up with Lil Jon and 40 virgins in an Ottoman hashish orgy. Finnish-Swedish Markis Sage makes a fantastic return with the 80’s tinged mellowness of “Creature of Lagoon”. Rarely a track of this beauty can be such a funkster at the same time. Icelandic prodigy Rabbi Bananas lashes out a broken beat holocaust with a riotous SH-101 screeching. “Cat Eat” is a true bastard of a track from the tiny country mostly known for its shoe-gazing soundscapes. We don’t know what the Canadian caveman Slow Hand Motëm was thinking when he sculpted the slow-burning crunk of “Smells Like Randy Barracuda”, and we don’t really give a shit. It’s Great. Shine on You crazy bromosexual! The victorious compilation is finished with one of the Harmönia staff’s favourites: Despite the misspelling, Daniel Savio’s heart achingly beautiful “People Die, Love Don’t” shines through the darkness like thousand crystal suns. We at Harmönia are Very proud to bring You this episode of the International Skweee series. An album of great quality that surpasses its predecessor in various ways. Free your mind and your ass will follow – The kingdom of heaven is within! -P. Jerkman/A&R, Harmönia Records.

Utopia Music is a new Bristol based drum & bass label founded by Mako, a DJ/producer with longstanding residencies at Dissident in Bristol, Spectrum in London and promoter of the infamous Utopia parties that have played host to guests including Randall, Fierce, Break, dBridge, Sabre, Lynx, Storm, Squire and more since starting in 2006. Opening the label’s musical account, Bristol resident and long-time Utopia supporter Break (Symmetry) steps up to deliver Natural Progression. SCULT003 Swoop / Funk Me Hard – Sleeper Cell & Maztek Subculture 12″ Vinyl
Usually when we think of Italy we think of designer labels, opera, fast cars, fine art and fine foods. Italian based Subculture Records however are looking to add firin’ drum & bass to that list as they present their third release from label owner Maztek and UK producers Sleeper Cell. Batton down the hatches, things are about to get rowdy! Sci-fi sounds capes are rife as Sleeper Cell and Maztek team up for ‘Swoop’ to open up Scult003 with its rich textured break, eerie pads and industrial fx. After a tense dropout it’s time to move out as the super-sick bass rocks into the mix along with the rugged beats to provide a great example of the neurofunk sound. Fans of Noisia, Break and the like will lap this one up. Then Maztek goes it alone for ‘Funk Me Hard’, another excursion into the dark twisted world of techy d&b but with as the name suggests, a little more funk. Absolute carnage is what this one causes on the drop of filthy bass, warped vox and yet more production wizardry. Crank it up! DJ support so far from Ed Rush, State Of Mind, Chris Renegade, Optiv, Masheen, Axiom and more.

Both tracks have been causing carnage across the world thanks to DJ support from Ed Rush, Black Sun Empire, Teebee, Cause 4 Concern, State of Mind, Phace, Prolix, Bulletproof, Misanthrop and Cern to name but a few.

NL004 Speak – Scuba Naked Lunch 10″ Vinyl
You haven’t worked in weeks. You’re unshaven and unkempt, your fridge is as bare as the dying light of a Sunday afternoon spent alone is bleak. Your rent is in arrears, and you dread the thought of more bills arriving through the door tomorrow. You spend more money on whiskey and weed than you spend on food, and have recently taken to shoplifting cheese from the supermarket. Barefoot, in your underwear still, you walk over to your record player, still faithfully spinning around and around and around since God knows what time this morning when the last people left… You reach for the record you walked into town to buy, pull it from it’s sleeve, still fresh despite a gathering storm of your greasy fingerprints clouding it like uncertainty clouds your future. For five and a half minutes you stand listening, eyes closed, and your troubles fall away. You flip the record over and, for a further five and a half minutes of pure joy, you hear that which few others ever will. THE FUTURE IS NAKED
DJ support from: Martyn, Scuba, 2562, TRG, Breakage, Brendon Moeller, Floating Points, Mary Anne Hobbs & Instra:mental.

isp001
ISP001 Running Away / Running Away (Guido Remix) – Wedge & Shadz If Symptoms Persist 12″ Vinyl
Amazing packaging and music from Bristol based DJ & producer Wedge. Coming with a fresh take on the dubstep sound with the debut release on his new label If Symptoms Persist… Having hosted his successful radio show on Sub M for four years, this first release represents the fruitful hookup that have come from the how. With the best of musical and vocal talent passing through, the show has become a watchword for keeping up on the developments in the Bristol sound. Shadz is one of the many talented vocalists to have guested on the show, and before long Wedge invited him into the studio to collaborate. The result is a perfect combination of bass weight beats and soulful songwriting. Shadz uses his experience singing with many different projects (Joker – Keep your eye on the ball, Gemmy ‘The Croft” Seezy -Whatever the weather, TC – Untitled, Distorted Minds – Otherside) to great effect and comes up with an infectious lyric with a yearning, searching theme that suits Wedges deep bass pressure perfectly. ‘Running Away’ join the long line of great vocal tun to come out of Bristol, from Smith & Mighty, Tricky, & Portishead to Reprazent & Ben Westbeech. Running Away – Guido Remix On the flip, rising talent Guido (one of the Purple Three along with Joker and Gemmy) turns in a remix that sums up the excitement surrounding these producers. R&B, grime, & dubstep are thrown into the mix. a rinsing b line mixes with Guido’s trademark or he orchestration & musicality. Two prime examples of why people are looking to Bristol for fresh take of the Dubstep / GrimeGoodnessKnowsWhat sound With DJ’s as diverse as Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1), Mr Jm (1Xtra), The Foreign Beggars (Dented Record ), Footloose (1Xtra), Starkey (Planet Mu), and N-Type (Rinse FM) supporting this release, things are looking great for this new label.

The flip couldn’t be any more different, but don’t let that put you off. ‘Angie Got Stoned’ is sheer genius with its quirky piano lead, skippy beats, sweet vocals and warm bass. HENCH011 Ill – Chasing Shadows Hench 12″ Vinyl
This is the second 12” from recent HENCH signing, Chasing Shadows. The duo drop some serious pressure with these dark and dirty tunes straight from the heart of cutting-edge dubstep production. They’ve already received attention from the likes of: Mary Anne Hobbs, Pendulum, Plastician, N-Type, and Benga, so give them a listen and see what all the hype’s about!
A.ILL – ‘Ill’ builds from an eerie intro, with sultry guitar chords and stabbing beat, slowly winding up to an immense drop. With twisted beats, a punishing b-line, and sweeping atmospherics, this is iller than ‘Ill’ – the bass is so low it will probably make you sick! Grimy and growling, this is a tune that’s going to tear your immune system to shreds.
AA. AMIRAH – Flip over for another dark, deep, no-nonsense number with ‘Amirah’; with ominous atmospherics, a stabbing drumbeat, and oriental female vox, ‘Amirah’ has plenty of spice and a feisty kick! A helicopter chopper sound fades in and out of consciousness and adds to the mayhem. Powerful and intense, with pummelling subs, heavy bassline and a thumping drum kick, ‘Amirah’ is a tune that takes no prisoners!

Finish copy. The fourth Rwina sees the light of yet another Taz Buckfaster 12 inch that’s going down in a true epic vein, one for the anthem horny jocks. So if you are into the grimy synth heavy side of things then better check this one out. Taz is on the case with the A side, Half Man Half Trout has been tearing up various floors for a while now. Meaty synths, a sexy melody, smooth delicate bassstings and a sharp drumbeat to nod your head to. A sure shot production that’ll leave and left tons of people wonder what that just was. It seems there aint no stopping the Taz because again he pulls it off on the flip with his other dancefloor smasher called 20 Red. 8 Bit bleeps and again a brutal squeezy synthline that’ll make your mouth water. Its like Snoop Dogg is floating on this orange cloud on his way to Jamaica to fill up his stash. A tune that finishes of this 12 inch in style and cements Taz as one to watch in the future! With releases coming up on Numbers (former Wireblock), Subway and a debut album on Rwina it shows that this is one producer we’ll hear alot more about! IME007 Time Is Now – TRG Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
The classic TRG release. repressed and Re-released. Fresh from releasing killer plates on Hessle Audio, Subway and Audio Freakz, Romania’s TRG touches down on Immerse to deliver this highly-accomplished 12”. First up is Time is Now, kicking off with samples of dystopian android speech mixed up with a simple flute lick that gives no warning of the impending carnage! Snipped up breaks collide with whiplash-inducing bass action and shuddering subs to make a guaranteed mess of any dancefloor. Flipside, TRG gets more reflective with They Know, as wistful chords drift across the intro like echoes of some long-forgotten rave, before dropping into a post-UKG boom-bass workout. Subs bulge beneath the broken 2-step riddim and occasional warping midline, building nicely towards the killer switchups on the second drop.

In collaboration with London’s Sigha, ‘Seperation’ is a pounding atmospheric thumper, silken threads of sound woven around pulsing beats and surgical percussion, expertly designed and constructed to create perpetual forward motion. ‘Lesser People’ is somewhat harder – crisp drums, ticking hats and solid bass drones flying past at supersonic speed as insane tech FX rip the veryair asunder. Accomplished and advanced. 9/10 [recommended] [DJ ThinKing, IDJ issue 117]

DJ MAG – Dubstep Single Of The Month – “Some tunes really hit you in the soul receptors, and ‘Wa6″ by West Londoner and antisocialite Harry Craze blows dust off the 45, and moistens the eyeballs. If J Dilla made dubstep, you’d get the same feeling; sweet strings bounce off mood-drenched synths and circulate the warmth. And whilst this won’t set the dancefloors alight, it will start a fire in the soul. The flip is great too, but you’d be forgiven for never listening to it“.

New UK Funky Promos

build001
BUILD001 Tongue Riddim – Baobinga & I.D Build 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Operating out of the same stable as Tectonic, Kapsize, Earwax and Caravan, Multiverse brings you a new label, Build, hitting the exciting space where Future Garage, Dubstep, UK Funky and all things Bass intersect. Headed up by renowned bassmusic ambassador Baobinga, known for his massive releases on Soul Jazz (with Tayo & Spyda) and Trouble & Bass (with Detroit’s DJ Nasty), as well as his wide-ranging DJ sets across the globe (including an appearance at Fabric’s 10th Birthday this October), the first release on Build sees Baobinga joined by regular partner in crime I.D. (Boka, Mata-Syn, Cool & Deadly). Tongue Riddim takes elements of Kuduru, percussive Dubstep and junglistic sub-bass pressure and combines them into a tightly-wound slice of dancefloor propulsion. On the flip, Roska – one of the main players in the UK Funky scene and a core DJ on Rinse FM – takes the tempo down but retains the sense of rhythmic intensity, rolling trademark tough Roska drums over a warm, yet menacing, bassline. Hypnotic without ever losing impact, the remix has already become a staple in his Rinse show. Early DJ support comes from Sinden, Martyn, Starkey, Buraka Som Sistema, Scratcha DVA, TRG, Shortstuff & Brackles and more.

Limited Edition Purple Vinyl. Scratcha DVA is not just the charismatic host of Rinse Fm’s breakfast show, he’s one of the UK’s most accomplished producers. An associate of Terror Danjah from the late 90’s, DVA supplied dubs to Dj Slimzee during grimes early days and has produced for luminaries of the scene like Wiley, Trim, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and more. More recently Scratcha has collaborated with beacons of the UK Funky scene like Roska, Cooly G, D-Malice and more while still releasing grime anthems like ‘Nasty Nasty Nasty’ and ‘Bullet Ago Fly’. The Jelly Roll Ep has already gained support from Marcus Nasty, Geeneus, Joker, Kode 9, Cooly G, Sinden and more. Built around a super-synthetic bassline its title track sqirms and shakes around stinging snares whilst ‘Guro Triba’ is a little on the more conventional side of House & Funky. Remixes comes from True Tigers Sukh Knight, who gives Nasty Nasty Nasty the creeping dubstep treatment, whilst Funky don Roska gives it his unique “Kicks and Snares” midas touch.

coming soon from Marlow: No Comply Recordings

Posted 05 November 2009 | By Editor | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Marlow is by no means a newcomer to Dubstep. His debut release ‘The Rope’ back in 2006 on Storming Productions received big support from some of the scene’s major players. This went on to secure him releases on influential labels including Boka, Hotflush, & Scuba. ‘Machine’ and ‘Butterfish Remix’ in particular got massive support from N-Type & Caspa, and received significant Radio 1 play. This 12″ went on to become one of the best selling Dubstep 12″s of 2007 – Marlow had accomplished a lot in a very short space of time.

marlow-live

‘No Comply’ is a brand new record label brought to you by DJ and producer ‘Marlow’. The label will be the main output for his high-energy, analogue-rich bass music. It will feature his best music to date, and will be the platform to provide all Marlow fans with a highly collectible product. Each vinyl release will be extremely limited, hand-numbered, and complete with hand-made cover art.

Marlow
Druid

12″ Vinyl / Digital – Released 23rd November 2009 (Digital available on Beatport from 16th)

A): DRUID
The label kicks off with undoubtedly Marlow’s best track to date. His signature flavours are obvious throughout, and Druid sounds as though Marlow has combined all the best elements from all previous tracks, and blended them together to create one almighty monster. He somehow manages to leave that dreary half-step pace behind, and create a fast flowing energy that isn’t often found in Dubstep. A slick and sexy feel, yet heavy enough to justify it’s place on any dancefloor. This is an essential purchase for fans of forward thinking dance music.

B): CATTLE PROD
Turn over for some proper stomping British action. If you like it hard and trashy then this one’s for you. A bass-heavy track with halfstep rhythms, yet reminiscent of the late 90s Hard House scene, this meathead banger really does prove that Marlow isn’t afraid to be different, and he totally manages to pull one off.

CIADK019 Sugar Hill – Lenzman C.I.A. Deep Kut 12″ Vinyl
Following his awesome remix of Total Science & Conrad’s modern classic ‘Soul Patrol’, Lenzman hooks up with the CIA crew once more for another duo of deep kuts. Everyone’s been talking about ‘Sugar Hill’ thanks to its inimitable style and Lenzman’s signature rolling throughout. Solid beats and a nifty synth hook make way for wide open atmospherics and a gradual build up to a drop which oozes with class. Rising pads and a muted reese bass are peppered with a soulful vocal snippet which makes this track completely irresistible. On the flip ‘Memory Loss’ is an exercise in beautiful minimalism as percussive licks mingle with interspersed vocals and epic pad swirls. Lenzman shows you how to make a track which is simple, yet highly effective. We hope you were paying attention, kids! Look out for CIADK020 – Henree & Hitten, dropping soon.

State Of Mind & Trei got together to produce the final tune for ‘Innuendo’ and the collective vibe was instantly focused directly on maximum crowd movement. ‘Thunder Biscuit’ was produced in one day of fruitful labour with all 3 talents at the boards. The reaction from around the world was positive and swift, with every DJ sent the tune supporting as soon as they got a chance to play out. ‘Innuendo’ on the flip is the title track of the LP, and serves up a menacing, rollicking vibe with breaks climbing all over the punishing, winding bass. SCULT003 Swoop / Funk Me Hard – Sleeper Cell & Maztek Subculture 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy.

Phantom kicks off with rolling beats that are constantly developed throughout the track and added to with N.Phect’s unmistakeable brand of dirty funk. Razzle Dazzle is less of an easy going affair as enormous amounts of bass right from the off build towards a disgusting, pounding drop that devastates dancefloors. Both tracks have been causing carnage across the world thanks to DJ support from Ed Rush, Black Sun Empire, Teebee, Cause 4 Concern, State of Mind, Phace, Prolix, Bulletproof, Misanthrop and Cern to name but a few.

RAMP025 Party – FaltyDL Ramp Recordings 12″ Vinyl
FaltyDL returns to RAMP after the painfully deep ‘To London’, and his acclaimed ‘Love Is A Liability’ album on some other label earlier this year, with a new 12” of sleazy 2step vibes. “Party” gets things moving with DL’s most organic production to date, resonating in your brain like the jaded memory of an uncomfortable lap dance from an impromptu trip to the future. Flip the wax for the warm fuzzy minimal garage vibes of “Alpafun”, a tune that Mr. Lustman hates so much, he never wanted it to see the light of day. Just to spite the cocky New Yorker, we are putting it out. DJ SUPPORT FROM MARY ANNE HOBBS, GILLES PETERSON, BENJI B, ROB DA BANK, ONEMAN.

CHST007 Twilight / V (Pinch Remix) – Distance Chestplate 12″ Vinyl
Fresh from tours in the USA and Australia, Distance commits two more of his killer dubplates to vinyl, putting an evil smirk on the face of Dubstep DJs and fans everywhere. Now seven releases in, the Chestplate imprint is well and truly established as a buy-on-sight label. This time around sees a new Distance anthem on side A, accompanied by a Pinch reversion of Distance’s modern classic ‘V’ on the flip. Twilight is Distance in primetime dancefloor destruction mode. No messin’! The theremin like spooky ambient melodies oscillate and brood, making way for the trademark Distance crunching riff. It smacks of Distance on top of his game. It slays and it dips, only to come back harder. This one should remind the Dubstep new skool that you don’t have to tear your brain out to make tear out. Turn the 12 over and original badman, Bristol lynchpin Pinch, comes correct with his version of the Distance speaker wrecker V. Pinch twists up and reconfigures the original into a new sonic horror show. This should be the office ambience of torture chambers everywhere. Pinch suppresses the drive and riff of Distance’s version, accentuating the more unnerving elements; yes it’s subtle, but it’s not any less devastating. If the system packs enough punch, this one will literally turn guts. Major support comes from the crop of discerning dubstep DJs, with full blessings coming from the likes of Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs and Hatcha. Alongside contemporaries like Benga, Skream, Pinch and Digital Mystikz, Distance has been responsible for shaping the Dubstep sound as we know it today. Distance fans can also check out his brand new album entitled Repercussions, out now on Planet Mu, accompanied by a second CD of all the Chestplate tracks to date.

KGO002 The Love Quadrant – Space Dimension Controller Kinnego Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo’s. Full artwork sleeves. Electronic / Dubstep label Kinnego Records started by Boxcutter out of Northern Ireland is back! After the success of the first release (by Boxcutter himself) he introduces the masses to a producer named ‘Space Dimension Controller’….the techno funk alias of 19-year-old Jack Hamill.

AR030 Last Drop / In the Background – MRK 1 / Cyrus Eight:FX 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Both MRK1 and Cyrus’ records can consistency be heard all over the world tearing through your local club’s subs and blowing up the speakers in your 10 watt radio as you listen to any of the number of electronic DJs on BBC Radio 1, 1xtra, Kiss FM etc now supporting the bass heavy genre that dominates music’s lowest frequencies. For this 12” two of Dubstep’s most established artists return to Eight:FX for the next in the labels Future:Dubstep series. To coincide with the release of MRK1’s Future:Dubstep:03 compilation, him and Cyrus each present two massive chest cavity shattering, club smashes which have received support from some of the biggest names in the scene and the likes of Kiss FM and BBC 1xtra on Crissy Criss’ Drum & Bass show. MRK1 was there from the start. He’s appeared on every major Dubstep radio station, as well as BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and Kiss FM. He’s toured the world, and been featured in magazines from RWD and Knowledge to Mixmag, and this months I-DJ, making him without shadow of doubt one of the most established players in the Dubstep scene, ever. Cyrus is another of Dubstep’s veterans. Having released on legendary labels including Hyperdub and Techtonic, played all over the globe at the genre’s most prestigious events and venues, as well as on BBC Radio 1. Having taken almost a year away from vinyl following Hatcha Vs Kromestar’s Brother’s Grim LP, and concentrating on a host of successful digital releases, Eight:FX recently returned to 12” for a series of vinyl to coincide with their Future:Dubstep compilations. 01 was mixed by Kiss FM’s Hatcha while 02 was mixed by newcomers Bare Noize. The first Future: Dubstep 12” release featured tracks from both of these artists and was the start of a new push for Eight:FX to build back up vinyl fan’s awareness of the label. This is the second step, featuring tracks that have been supported around the world, and released alongside the 2 x CD compilation mixed by MRK1 (which contains over 45 completely exclusive tracks from other Dubstep superstars including Crazy D, Hatcha, and Kromestar) this is sure to see Eight:FX not only topping digital genre charts but also in the top echelons of the physical charts once again.

FRJ005 Reminder – Sully Frijsfo Beats 12″ Vinyl
Super Limited white label. Griping about dubstep seems pretty pointless at the moment – for almost every formulaic record on the shelves, there’s another young, creative producer beating a much more interesting path. Norwich’s Jack Stevens – better known as Sully – is justifiably seen as one of those individuals. Tantalisingly doing the rounds on dub for long enough now, “Reminder” and “Jackman’s Rec” should usher in Sully’s biggest moment yet. Since Blackdown (AKA Martin Clark) included both in his end-of-year dubstep chart for Pitchfork, he and DJ partner Dusk have supported the tunes consistently on Rinse FM and at FWD>>, also featuring “Jackman’s Rec” in their XLR8R magazine podcast last year. “Reminder” has subsequently been deployed in sets by Ben UFO, Pangaea and Tomb Crew, the latter including it in their recent contribution to FACT magazine’s respected mix series. One of Sully’s tricks is that his music never falls into predictable slots. “Reminder” might be a peak-time, late-summer skanker, but there isn’t a clichéd reggae sample in earshot. Instead, it’s closer to a translation of pioneering producer Pole’s crackly dub abstractions into dancefloor form. “Jackman’s Rec” is a velvety roller that on one level, is the best example so far of how Sully’s intuition for swing allows him to nail the dark sensuality of early FWD>> beats. Yet at the same time, it’s in no way trapped in nostalgia for that era, simply sounding like the next step for future garage. “Reminder” / “Jackman’s Rec” is released on 12” vinyl and digital formats, including 50 12” white-labels available in advance. In addition, two more excursions from Sully, “Sleazy” and “Cadillac”, are on sale as downloads only, recommended in September by Boomkat.

RWINA004 Half Man Half Trout / 20 Red – Taz Buckfaster Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
Check out Taz buckfasters interview with Sonic Router too! http://sonicrouter.blogspot.com/2009/09/interview-taz-buckfaster.html

PROPH115 Gotta Have It – MJ Cole feat. Digga Prolific Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Production legend, scene stealer and one time MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE nominee MJ COLE hooks up with Atlantic Records latest signing and one of the freshest vocal and song writing talents in the country, DIGGA, for what is set to be a HUGE radio and club smash – GOTTA HAVE IT! MJ COLE layers his distinctly piercing strings with DIGGA’S soft but overtly masculine tones to weave a tale of unrequited love with a twist. Couple that with the infectious bassline provided by this production wizard and the pair are definitely sitting on a potential hit! At the age of 24 Matt Coleman better known as MJ COLE became one of the first artists to crossover from the burgeoning UK Garage scene to mainstream success. Grounded in a culture obsessed with authenticity, he was almost unique in simultaneously drawing praise from his lesser-known peers as easily as the critics (the album, ‘SINCERE’ was nominated for the MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE) and the record-buying masses (two top ten singles with ‘SINCERE’ and ‘CRAZY LOVE’). The album was certified silver in the UK alone, and a MOBO award for Best Producer cemented Matt’s reputation. His list of remix credits are as star studded as any, from MARIAH CAREY, ROOTS MANUVA, DIDO, NITIN SAWNEY, DE LA SOUL and LAMB he’s been one of the most sought after producers for the last ten years. GOTTA HAVE IT is the first single from the forthcoming as yet untitled album and teams MJ up with rising star DIGGA, the man behind huge internet hit BROKEN who has recently featured on the massive CHASE & STATUS album MORE THAN A LOT. Along with the firing original version GOTTA HAVE also features a further six remixes from the likes of ILL BLU, MICKY SLIM, PENFOLD, CONTROL S, EPYDEMIX and MJ’s very own FUNKY DUBB taking DIGGA’s vocal in a number of inspired directions.

Forthcoming: Elemental – “Messages From The Void” LP (Runtime Records)

Forthcoming: Elemental – “Messages From The Void” LP (Runtime Records)

Posted 13 October 2009 | By Editor | Categories: news, tracks, video | 3 Comments

Elemental’s imminent debut LP “Messages from the Void” is a collection of work from the last four years, spanning a range of styles, made using a combination of new and old technologies, including Elemental’s beloved modular synthesizer. He is proud to be able to present it to the world – a favour returned for all of the amazing music that has touched him throughout his years as a music listener and raver.

Elemental’s fresh take on the dubstep sound has got both scene stalwarts and eclectic tastemakers singing his praises. Blending components of acid house, Detroit techno, ‘golden age’ drum & bass, vintage dubwise and African rhythm, his sound is rich in texture and musical heritage, yet remains eminently danceable.

The North London based producer – Adam Wilson to his friends – started dabbling with production in 1994 with a Roland D5 and Atari ST while he was still at school. Soon after he invested in an Akai S2000 sampler, bought a PC, and the rest, as they say, is history. In the nineties he predominantly focused on making drum and bass and experimental electronica, eventually putting out his first drum and bass release as a white label off his own back.

A few years later, together with schoolmate Dario Swade, they formed the breakbeat garage duo Elemental & 3D, releasing on their own label Runtime Records in 2002. A couple of years later after some time abroad, Elemental caught the likes of Search & Destroy on Rinse FM and instantly found the sound he had been looking for: dark, heavy, syncopated beats and bass.

Since 2004, Elemental has been focused on bringing his newly developed sound to the masses. Combining dubbed out dirty bass lines with hypnotising rhythms, he has released on labels such as Destructive, Hotflush, Pitch Black, Halo Beats, and his own imprint Runtime, with his seminal track “Soulfire” one of the highlights on Tayo’s Fabriclive mix CD. He was officially the first person to do a live dubstep performance, mixing up and dubbing components of his productions using Ableton Live to rapturous audiences across the world: no set is ever the same twice.
