Palette Recordings was started by John Tejada in the fall of 1996. Many releases later it is one of the most respected techno labels in the world. Palette became an exclusive outlet for Tejada to release his most prized music. Past releases have featured music and remixes by artists such as Daniel Bell, Titonton Duvante, Klute, Dominick Martin, and Dan Curtin among others. However these days the label is set up as the primary outlet for the work of its three main artists. John Tejada, 19 year Tejada collaborator Arian Leviste, as well as Justin Maxwell.

Coming next will be a 4 track EP from John Tejada & Josh Humphrey.

Tejada and Humphrey made their debut together late in 09 with their “Marooned,” ep. “Assimilation” continues the theme of being marooned in Los Angeles. The four works compiled here are the result of the best moments out of 20 recording sessions. The music is for the most part assembled with analog instruments with Humphrey and Tejada bringing their modular gear together for the sessions. Humphrey’s knowledge of synths and programming is quite extensive. He until recently helped operate LA based Big City Music, a dealer of modular and boutique synthesizers.

The four works cover a wide range. “Assimilation” builds up panning modular basslines and swirling percussion with a building chord line that brings things together as the drums build. “Culture Shock” uses pitch shifting trickery to transpose the main melodic hook slamming it into nasty modular bass modulation giving the track it’s pretty/dark edge. “Adaptation” keeps it’s modular touches a bit more subtle focusing on classic melodic Tejada chords and nostalgic beats. “Subversion” rounds things out with a non 4/4 piece perhaps being the most nostalgic moment of the ep. This highly melodic uplifting track takes it’s cues from happy musical memories. Classic chords, 808 beats, and some melodic modular lines to close out the ep.

One of most innovative producers in the Drum & Bass and electronic music scene, Sam KDC display a depth and psychedelic mood. stunningly beautiful music as opposed to simply ‘drum & bass’. Sam explains ‘The 12″ is a really special one to me, both the tunes reflect some really deep rooted memories and feelings of mine. I used to feel like that as a kid listening to Pink Floyd, especially at the beginning of “Comfortably Numb”, something else that was very influential to this piece. The other side, “Perish” is a really personal to me. I finished it and loved it but didn’t want to send it to anyone. It was my housemate at the time, Frank, that convinced me to show it to others, not through what he said, but the fact he asked me for a copy of it and I used to come home and I’d hear it blasting out of his room and he doesn’t even like DnB, so that was a sign to me for that one… The first vocal right at the beginning says “I feel safe with you” and that was something that was missing in my life at the time, and in truth, still is… I called it “Perish” because I sampled a home video from a couple of years ago that I wanted gone, I got rid of the video once I’d taken the audio from it and so it was like that moment in my life was trapped in that piece of music, with all other remaining context of it lost… Perished… taken from:

Two of the most talked about producers of recent times, June Miller & Anile, join forces to devastating effect for DSM016, and together they have crafted the darkest release to grace Deep Soul Music so far. This is the first of many tunes from these two as they have developed a close working relationship with their complimentary sounds and styles and they will be gracing DSM with plenty more of their music in the future.
Whilst many have tried to jump on the ‘minimal’ bandwagon and to imitate others styles, ‘Glass of Greed’ is the perfect demonstration of how stripped back, half-step d&b should be done. ‘Induction’ sees Anile go it alone, and the man himself has even said this is one of his personal favourites of the tracks he has produced. Stripped back to very fundamentals of the genre, you can hear elements of his trademark half-step sound but with the rolling drums and big bass, this is one of Anile’s more dancefloor orientated efforts and judging by the reaction from dj’s and ravers alike, he has got the formula just right.

RAMP032 Idiot Box – P.U.D.G.E Ramp Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2
Although you may not have yet heard his name, P.U.D.G.E. has been bubbling up in U.S. beat scene for many years. At age 9, his father gave him a Bass, a Juno synth, a DX drum machine and a Tascam 4 track. He encouraged the boy to start making his own music; P.U.D.G.E. got the bug. By the time young P.U.D.G.E. (thus called because at school he was always extra medium, or less than chubby) hit 13, he had discovered turntableism, and started DJing at house parties around NYC. By his late teens, he had emerged as a promising emcee, standing next to many of the well-known emcees from the Lyricist Lounge; including Mos Def & El P. Still producing, P.U.D.G.E.’s music was starting to gain attention, and his first beat was released on the Vinyl Junkies debut EP. After hearing about the emerging beat scene in L.A., he moved there in 2004, and started getting a few production credits under his belt, including cuts for Rawkus Records and Stacey Epps. After circulating some of his instrumental beat tapes, interest for P.U.D.G.E. started to gain momentum. Early this year, P.U.D.G.E. headed up All Cty’s L.A. series, on a split 10” with Dibiase, preceeding releases from Ras G, Samiyam & Matthewdavid.

Matthew Gonsalves, known as Matty G to the world of music, is a pioneer of the US dubstep scene. Since his debut release on the Argon imprint in 2006, Matty has ceaselessly pushed his unique brand of hip hop inspired, 808 bass workouts, that have been destroying clubs the world over. His 2007 release ‘50, 000 Watts’ shook up the scene with its stripped down breaks and punishing subs, finding its way into the bag of just about every DJ worth his salt, becoming something of an instant classic. Its profound influence on the scene is still being felt today, and it has become one of those tracks that people are still searching Discogs to get hold of, at any price. His 2008 LP, ‘Take You Back,’ cemented his placing in the flourishing dubstep scene, exploring his diverse musical influences and amalgamating the sounds of hip hop, funk, soul, reggae and jungle into a 140bpm template. It still remains one of the most accomplished albums to have been made in the scene. After linking up with Dub Police head honcho Caspa, who remixed his massive ‘West Coast Rocks’ for Argon, he has recently officially joined the Dub Police crew, the fruits of which we will see over the coming months.

The title track, ‘Feel It’ kicks things off in fine style with some of the most infectious rolling tablas – his percussion is just sublime. A vocal sample declaring the weight of your bass and the largeness of your soundsystem is all the track needs to usher in a chest thumping sub sonic bass tone and there is no way back you’re sucked into that soup of sub bass frequencies. ‘Grandfather Clock’ counts down to a dance floor meltdown when the metronome-like sample, half tempo drum patterns and hefty bass melts into blazing techno buzzes that just keep coming, it’s those killer synths that make it, truly coming from nowhere.
The deeply blissful ‘Motherland’ is one for the meditative crew, subtle but weighty bass pulses roll off half stepping rhythms, tablas and all that good stuff all accented with Indian vocals instrumentation. It’s so deep, minimal it would make Youngsta proud. The final track ‘Strategy’ is a roller with a garage kind of swing to it, it skips along with big room dub techno chords twisting in and out of the bumpy beats it really comes alive and picks up the pace. Pure vibes all the way.

The tracks are a journey into dark atmospheres and atomic warhead bass, with more variation and hue than 2007′s ‘STEALTH’. Yet on ‘Refuse; Start Fires’ Harris has returned to painting angry pictures with more colours than simply black – the record takes on new territory at the 70 bpm mark, and the live kit gives the tracks a more fluid groove than ever in places. But this is Scorn, and Scorn delivers darkness and anger like no one else, with merciless cuts such as Bear Felt Nowt and Shitwind’s A-Coming providing harsh atmospheres and endurance test bass wobble like only Mick Harris can dish out. Scorn is an entity – for over 15 years Mick Harris has not relented with the project’s dubbed out beats, film noir atmospheres, and over the top bass compulsions. ‘Refuse; Start Fires’ is perhaps the angriest and most well articulated of his projects in the last decade.

Klute’s first album in 2 years titled ‘Music for Prophet’, on his own ‘Commercial Suicide’ imprint. As on his previous albums, Klute stays true to himself with another non-commercial, yet 100% dancefloor friendly longplayer that – just like his excellent dj sets – offers the right balance of musical tunes alongside some real heavy hitters. Tom Withers, started back in 1994, i think when he was asked for a name to keep exclusive to Certificate 18 records when they agreed on 2 tracks to be his first single. It was there he stayed until 2000 when he delivered his 2nd final album for Cert 18 called Fear Of People. At this point in time Tom decided to make a change and realising no one else was interested in releasing his music decided to set up his own label. With his own platform set up he realized anything was possible, he could even release music by other idiots. Which he did. Perhaps too much. An interesting fact no one knows about Tom Klute is that he is the world’s leading composer of Airport music. Most of you who’ve travelled the friendly skys will have unknowingly heard his works at one time or another. Now we come to 2010 and Klute is ready for fucking more, and more it is with his 6th album “Music for Prophet”. All of Klute’s previous albums have been released to critical acclaim and this one will not stand behind, showing that Klute’s consistency as an artist reaches into 2010 and beyond. The album which also features a collaboration with Dom & Roland will be released as triple coloured vinyl, 2 X CD and Digital download. The additional CD & digital download package promises bonus material including techno tracks.

The label has reached beyond our expectations and we wanted to mark it suitably, Thus for this release we are proud to bring you two remixes from the labels back catalogue, courtesy of Inneractive’s Spirit & Shogun Audio’s Icicle. Raiden- M82: Spirit Remix: The original track was a rolling yet edit heavy drum work out from Raiden, big on the bass and rich textures as you would expect. M82 signalled a new concentration on bass weight from Raiden and began to prick the ears of deejays. Spirit was one of the first to pick up on the track so there was no better choice for the rework, Spirit has further stripped back the track to its core elements and has in turn found another groove to exploit, A great rework from a dance music veteran. Pounding bass and stepping drums are the order of the day!
Raiden & Khanage: King Stays King: Icicles Royal Treatment: ‘Kings’ is a track that has achieved the honour of being the most played track in the labels history, the list of deejays who played the original reads like a who’s who of drum n bass. There were few choices for remixing the track, Icicle was number one the list and to the labels pleasure, the coldest producer in the land jumped at the chance & delivered everything you would expect, juggernaught drums laced with only the best bass from the Dutch wonder. As soon as the track went public the reactions were instantaneous, rounding off a landmark release for Offkey Music. Heres to the future!

Although you may not have yet heard his name, P.U.D.G.E. has been bubbling up in U.S. beat scene for many years. At age 9, his father gave him a Bass, a Juno synth, a DX drum machine and a Tascam 4 track. He encouraged the boy to start making his own music; P.U.D.G.E. got the bug. By the time young P.U.D.G.E. (thus called because at school he was always extra medium, or less than chubby) hit 13, he had discovered turntableism, and started DJing at house parties around NYC. By his late teens, he had emerged as a promising emcee, standing next to many of the well-known emcees from the Lyricist Lounge; including Mos Def & El P. Still producing, P.U.D.G.E.’s music was starting to gain attention, and his first beat was released on the Vinyl Junkies debut EP. After hearing about the emerging beat scene in L.A., he moved there in 2004, and started getting a few production credits under his belt, including cuts for Rawkus Records and Stacey Epps. After circulating some of his instrumental beat tapes, interest for P.U.D.G.E. started to gain momentum. Early this year, P.U.D.G.E. headed up All Cty’s L.A. series, on a split 10” with Dibiase, preceeding releases from Ras G, Samiyam & Matthewdavid.

A strand emerging within dubstep is a mutant jungle strain within the sound. Needless to say, it’s impossible to imagine dubstep without the DNA of jungle: it’s prominent in so many ways and places, from Burial’s Foul Play influences to Loefah’s love of the sound itself. Members of the scene used to DJ jungle, from N Type and Kode9 to Jason (Transition’s mighty mastering engineer). In fact the whole “dark” component that makes dubstep distinct from UK garage has its roots in El-B’s twin love of Metalheadz and 2step. Jungle is less an influence on dubstep, more like the foundation on which the whole scene, via garage, was built. Take a listen to Streisand Effect’s booming crunk beats, heavy basses, epic synthesizer leads and cristallic arpeggios and choose for yourself. Dubstep – hero Tes La Rok’s outstanding remix stays true to the original but adds some extra dubby aesthetics to Randy’s storming soccer stadium skweee vibes. Backside of the record is dominated by more moody and naturalistic atmospheres. Finish Copy Promo’s. The third release on Project Squared features on it’s A side two tracks of Techno infused Dubstep from L-OW, an Estonian producer who has been building a reputation and discography since 2008 with a string of excellent releases. The first track, “Pinpoint”, has an energetic drive and pace despite it’s syncopated individual rhythmical elements. L-OW fuses these disparate elements to make a dance floor track with impact and depth. L-OW’s second track is Diver; a more reflective and introspective piece than Pinpoint, this is not a recording to play at the height of a set, but is more a piece focussed on mood and depth. On the B side, Bristol based artist Furesshu remixes Diver, taking elements of the original 140bpm Dubstep track and applying them to a 127bpm Techno framework. After a well received debut release on Project Squared that has garnered DJ play from the likes of Sigha , Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock, Furesshu has produced a superb remix as a follow up. He strips back the original to a haunting, industrial, emotive melodic element, and drives the pace of the remix with cymbal lead drum lines and expansive bass. ‘Above Words’ is completely transformed by San Francisco’s master of quirky folktronica, Badmammal, who rewrites the tune’s Autonomic-via-Detroit stylings into a gorgeous montage of dusty acoustic Americana. A hypnotising, waltz-time guitar rendition of the original loop builds up into crashing waves of chiming bells and choral vocals, taking the listener on a breathtaking and emotional journey.

Gergely Sasvári aka Mindscape, is one of the major producers hailing from the thriving Hungarian drum and bass scene, homeland of producers like Chris.SU, SKC, or Jade. He achieved his first success as a member of the electronic band ’Random Soundz’, performing live at several major events. In 2003 he founded the Mindscape trio, that a couple of years later became his solo project. 2010 looks even brighter for Mindscape, Collaboration EP on Subtitles, and also looking at a single 12” at the classic Virus Recordings. While working on his 2nd album, he has also found time for other projects, such as collabs with Gridlok, Chris.SU and Jade. Beyond doubt, by 2010 he become an unavoidable force in the international drum and bass scene.

SUBTLE013 Tensions – Sub Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Subtle Audio makes it’s return to the vinyl fold with this brand new 3 tracker by Austria’s Sub. Living at high altitude in his native land, it comes as no surprise that these tracks exude an icy sound. “Tensions” is a beautifully delicate piece of D&B. Sharp snares, hi-hats and drifting atmospheres are underpinned by a sub-zero bass sound. Suddenly the beats thicken and become twisted and glitchy. It’s almost as if a frozen lake you were standing on is beginning to crack and give way! “Halleluja” is on the half-speed tip and will not even sound like D&B to most. Choir voices are interrupted by a stepping beat and a shuddering, dirty bassline, offset by a world of icey atmospherics, echoes and feedback. This sound is truly from another planet. “Hydra” is something a little different for Subtle Audio – clocking in at 120bpm but it certainly doesn’t sound like house or techno! It’s a nicely mellow track with a lurching, jerky beat that is filtered and reversed but always rhythmical. Dark Rhodes keys and then a bright piano line ensure a nice variance of mood in this beautifully balanced piece.

PTN002 More Than Ever EP – Hackman PTN 12″ Vinyl
Briskly traveling from Swansea to Leeds, PTN follows Doc Daneeka’s release with an equally hyped EP of fresh material from Hackman, who along with Doc D, featured in FACT Magazine’s top 10 producers to watch for the year. Hackman is one of the exploding Funky movement’s best and brightest producers, rising fast and unleashing unstoppable rhythm after unstoppable rhythm. Profiled by the venerable and influential Blackdown in 2009 Hackman is no stranger to hype even so early in his career. But it’s not all just hype, and if anything, the hyperbole is warranted. Hackman makes music in line with other prominent Funky producers, but his productions have a certain sheen and a peculiarly humid quality that make them unmistakable. His impressive grasp of bass (see the absolutely crushing basslines in “Bodies” and “Surround” off of his EP for Well Rounded, betrays his initial foray into dubstep, and it lends his music a power both more nuanced and more visceral than many of his contemporaries.

Calibre flexes his dubstep muscles, here making his second outing on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint – the first was a subtle rolling garage-like affair that had all the hallmarks of Calibre’s drum & bass sound as well as Deep Medi’s deepness. The highlight here has to be ‘Tenopause,’ where Calibre’s knack for subtle rolling percussive bliss is in full effect. The hi-hats draw you in with their fluid forward motion and when they play off the kicks and that addictive bass line pulses with hypnotic energy before flailing off into open space like it’s ricocheted off a passing space cruiser, you’re deep into eyes down zoned out, head nod, arm shake territory. ‘Discreet Dub’ is a more spaced out affair, slowing things down to a half step and upping the atmosphere as the bass seduces you into a state of bliss as it shifts amongst the eerie Middle Eastern melodies. It’s a special one as Boka Records enlists the services of the current Queen of underground Electronic music IKONIKA for a postgarage relick of ‘Flex’d’ (the original was released on DJ Madd’s ‘Better With You EP’ – BOKA020). It was first showcased by Alleycat on her highly successful Kokeshi Podkast series and is currently garnering support from Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1) and Martyn (3024). It’s certainly a musical departure for the Boka camp but 2010 has been all about diversifying and showcasing all styles within the realms of bass music.
DJ Madd is on a heater right now with support for his music coming from all angles, and so the time is right to release argueably his biggest and most supported track ‘Detroit Skank’, first showcased on Skream‘s ‘Stella Sessions’ radio show on RinseFM and more recently by Gilles Peterson on Radio 1. It’s a beast of a roller which expertly incorporates dub and techno influences, the bassline on this one is absolutely sick, the likes of Headhunter, Skream, RSD and Akira Kiteshi have been utilising it in the raves to devastating effect.

An astounding compilation of the breakneck Shangaan dance output of the Nozinja studio in Soweto, recorded between 2006 and 2009. The traditional Shangaan music is fast. You play it slow, they won’t dance. music. Shangaan is fast. While others play at 110, we are at 180, 182, 183. And when you hear those marimba beats and that live guitar through the keyboard, you know it’s Shangaan. You hear those toms, then you know, this is Shangaan music. “You must be prepared to see the fastest dance ever,” Dog declares. The dances are wild, with films of them attracting more than half a million hits on You Tube. The tradition grows out of the Shangaan disco movement, a music that dominated in the ’80s with artists like Penny Penny and Peter Teanet. Shangaan disco ran at 110 BPM. Dog’s music is around 180 and it’s getting faster. Yet the lyrics seem to run counter to this rapidity. They read like African soap operas, tied up with domestic matters and a yearning for the slower life. This is country music. There’s something distinctive in this Shangaan perspective: they are one of the more rural and traditional groups in the wealthiest African nation, yet ‘tradition’ to them can also be living, electronic and nuanced. Just as Dog samples American phrases in his songs, his videos cut in shots of white joggers on a spring day, a foggy lakeshore somewhere like Wisconsin, even a corporate office space —mundane yet exotic images which become intriguing takes on the modern South African dream. Instead of African music becoming Americanized and re‐framed for the global market, Dog’s productions do the opposite. American phrases and foreign images become samples in his collage, in his traditional context. This album is the first release of its kind outside South Africa. Here is Dog’s music as‐is.

Finish copy. Second release for the young Dutch act Sinister Souls, following a debut on Excision’s Rottun. These two ‘Borderline’ tracks are of the slow-moving, heavy and scraping dubstep kind, and somewhat shows well how the whole dark d’n'b sensibilities can translate into this genre. As with Broken Note, Matta, The Eerier Child or a good part of the Rottun people, gone are most dub elements, replaced by grating distortion and dark undertones. Nonplus 007 sees the Californian based producer Vaccine make her debut on the label with a brace of tracks in her signature style of rich musical textures and ingenious drum arrangements. With a wealth of releases on labels such as Hotflush and Tempa, its safe to say that quality control has never been an issue for her and this release is no exception.
a) Vaccine ‘Ochre’ – The a-side ‘Ochre’ with its scratchy lo-fi beats and rugged gliding bassline is textbook Vaccine. An abstract looping vocal brings an almost soulful edge to the track but it still remains tense and gritty throughout. Doing damage in clubs across the world but just as relevant at home, this track will stay in your playlist for the long haul.
aa) Vaccine ‘Cascade failure’ – Slightly mellower than the a-side but on more of an emotive tip, this track plays with orchestral “Burialesque” chords and melodies and really makes you get your thinking cap on. Once again her trademark lo-fi beats and percussion swirl around in seemingly effortless complex patterns, with layer upon layer of chords and melodies the track has so much depth its almost impossible to take it all in with just one listen.

SENSELESS012 Zombiezz EP – Kanji Kinetic Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Senseless have always believed that the spirit of rave never died, it’s everywhere, but now in 2010 we’ve discovered that spirit distilled into its purest form, let’s call it essence of rave. Kanji Kinetic makes it, a monstrous hybrid of electro, bassline, jungle and, yes, rave. It doesn’t just deny classification, it smashes it to pieces. These tracks look backwards but sound like the future, they’re cheeky but deadly serious, they’re rough and smooth, sharp and blunt, sweet and sour, bouncy, wonky, hyper and just a little bit insane. In short, the ultimate party music. The EP is a game of two halves, easing you in at 140 BPM with a wonky mixture of futurebassline and pitch bent synths (ToyGuns) then rolling into the monstrous Scientist. Reach-for-the-lazers rave stabs and scorching bass collide to make something seriously dangerous. We then take a quick diversion for a remix from Kaiser, a newcomer with releases coming on Starkey’s Slit Jockey, who twists Toy Guns into a devastating mix of grime, 8bit bleeps and UK Funky syncopation, this is what it sounds like to be one of those ghosts being eaten by Pacman. Next up we turn up the pace for ‘New Era’, weighing in at 175 BPM, it’s the fastest thing we’ve ever released but its half time weight makes it feel like jungle chopped and screwed in the fifth dimension. Quite simply it has the biggest drop you will hear this year, possibly ever. It’s jungle tempo but drop this in a dubstep set and watch the floor ignite. The title track, Zombiezz also rocks 175 BPM on the half time but does it 4×4, cheeky cartoon samples and strings building to another seismic sub frequency workout. Finally Zombiezz gets two remixes, Cracks turn in something pretty special, taking things back down to 140 and turn in a mix they’re calling ‘Horror House’, a visceral mixture of techno, grime and lots of bass. Then just for fun we asked legendary hardtek producer 9MM to see if he could make Zombiezz a little harder, and he did. Enjoy! FRJ006 Angels Dub EP – Kuoyàh Frijsfo Beats 12″ Vinyl
Italy’s Marco Donnarumma indicated some of the potential of his Kuoyàh project with last April’s digital release for Frijsfo, earning enthusiastic tips from the likes of Boomkat. Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that his debut on wax ups the game – even in the face of a mix from Sully – by applying a focus capable of working magic in 2010′s open-ended dubstep dance. It’s an overused comparison that probably deserves to be buried, but Angel Dub does reek of Horsepower Productions, or more precisely the ducking 2-step and Basic Channel steals of Benny Ill’s classic Tempa EP with Hatcha. In this case laziness has been avoided, a sunstroked, hazy quality making it sound Kuoyàh’s own, and a judicious electronica dimension expanding the arrangement without falling into the IDM-ish trap of trying to ape something cleverer. That holds true even for the more downtempo Asia, which turns up the dub channel to find hordes of space-echo revenants chasing around. The thoroughly dust-less grooves of common soundsystem samples are absent, though, dropped for an unexpected reversioning of Artificial Intelligence bleep tones. On Soldiers, Donnarumma’s background in electroacoustic music and ambient is more obvious, in common with Chase The Comedown, 2009′s digital EP. It’s equally clear how he’s been sharpening this kind of line since then, refining trademark, half-dismantled bundles of beats to the point where everything is in just the right wrong place. Attention for this EP will understandably bend towards Sully’s Angels Dub remix, not without justification. It’s another great Jack Stevens beat, with pummelling sub-bass, arpeggios scrambled almost in the style of Zomby and an uncharacteristically martial drum track beating out something like an Addison Groove juke pattern. Kuoyàh himself, though, deserves just as much of your time on this one, trust us.

HENCH017 1986 Was The Future – Mensah Hench 12″ Vinyl
Visit Bristol and mention the name Mensah; chances are that someone’s going to know the man we’re talking about. Having become involved in the Bristol music scene at an early age, there’s no surprise that his productions epitomize the things associated with the city’s music – positivity and progressiveness. Having already lent the bouncy number, Pulse 80’s, to the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, and getting voted in the as one of the ‘Top 10 Producers to watch’ in the Dubstep Forum Awards, Mensah provides us with yet more reason to mark him down as one to keep an eye on in the future. The Untitled Future Funk EP is a 6 track release that provides a true insight into the depth of studio-skills this young artist has developed, touching on both the atmospheric and downright funky sides of dubstep. Already having had a track placed on the CSI TV series (Stapleton Rd) and with all tracks receiving regular play from the scene’s big hitters, we’re excited to present this stunning effort from Mensah.
A. 1986 WAS THE FUTURE – The synth-led chords from the outset of this tune frame it as a future classic of dubstep. Not holding back when the bassline drops, Mensah has crafted a sound that delivers a punch. A truly gripping production that keeps you locked, seeming to introduce new sounds and phrases whilst maintaining its esoteric feel. ‘1986 Was The Future’ is going to be one of those tunes that’ll have the dancefloor screaming for rewind after rewind – and we’re sorry, but you’re going to be obliged to give it to them! Currently being rinsed by the likes of Plastician, Starkey and L-Vis.
AA1. ACID DUB – On a slightly different tip, Mensah hits us with something a little more accustomed to the HENCH imprint’s sound. Commencing with that familiar steppy vocal, the background interference builds into a seemingly mechanical drop – lifting and taking all with it. A truly funky production that guarantees to turn the party to a full-on warzone when that bassline drops – no wonder the likes of Skream, Bok Bok and Baobinga have been smashing this one.
AA1. UNTITLED FUTURE FUNK – Guiding us in with tripped-out synths and a gentle kick-drum, this one drops subtly. ‘Untitled Future Funk’ is a wonderfully unique production that sits perfectly as an end-of night tune that is as progressive as it is moody. The track develops introducing extra synth to compliment that jagged kick-drum bassline. PL009 Interpretazioni EP – The Subdivision Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl
The SubDivision round up some of some of dubstep’s heaviest and dirtiest mercenaries for the latest Paradise Lost offering of 4 remixes on the Interpretazioni EP. Roguestar starts things off with what can only be considered an epic remix of an already epic track, Devil’s Kiss. Full throttle from the start and straddling the line between dubstep and breakstep, this track will appeal to anyone needing to destroy the floor at 3AM. Lonewolf goes dirt for his remix of The Messenger, bringing the heat with his notorious filthy style, incorporating heavy synths with nasty breaks. On the flip, Djunya takes things to the dark side of dub, with his re-take on the bizzarely spacey Elephant Walk. Currently a favorite of DJs pushing the deeper sounds, Djunya brings in heavy reverbs, 8-bit stabs, and his trademark bassline business to produce a brilliant and complex sound. Vesicle round off the release with what might be their heaviest production yet on the remix of The Rose. Junglist vibes and bass terrorism combine to produce devastating material showing off the impressive skills of these up-and-comers from Finland. Whilst they all have very individual sounds, they share a vision of dubstep, uk funky, techno & house influenced beats that seem to defy genre. The A-side ‘Untitled’ is a huge stepping wad of funk, bringing to mind 2-step, early Skream & Benga, even stripped down grime classics like Pulse X, but with a truly contemporary twist. This tune drops hard, and has been a secret weapon of Appleblim’s for some time now – he was pleasantly surprised to see ravers of all ages go mad to it! The flip sees Joe’s more experimental leanings come out on ‘Digest’, but he never forgets the groove and funk. With rolling percussion, steppy sub bass and shiny analogue synth stabs cutting through, it seems to us like a mixture of Mala from Digital Mystikz and Theo Parrish! High praise indeed…

SENSELESS013 Zarbak – Pacheko & Pocz Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The phrase ‘tropical’ is currently getting used to describe a lot of different music; some good, some bad, some ugly. To save on confusion Senseless went out and travelled the world to find some music from the actual tropics, Venezuela to be precise. Somewhere buried deep in the mysterious rainforest, or possibly just in a studio in Caracas, they found Pocz and Pacheko. It’s so near the equator maybe we can ditch the ‘tropical bass’ tag and go for something new, ‘equatorial bass’ perhaps? Maybe not. Pacheko, Francisco Mejia, will be familiar to some for his solo releases on Lo Dubs, Murder Channel, Seclusiasis and for his work with legendary Venezualan expat Cardopusher. His partner in bass Pocz (Carlos Majoral) is a classically trained musician and production engineer. Along with a select few others they run Abstractor, a collective of producers, artists and designers, who promote parties, run a blog and do a fine job of representing bass music in Venezuela pretty much solo. The collective includes graphic artist Design or Die who is responsible for the incredible artwork and pretty special video for ‘Zarbak’. Together by day Pocz and Pacheko run a sound design studio in the rum fuelled pressure cooker of political and social unrest that is Caracas. Their training in high-end audio engineering is evident in the quality and weight of the production. Nights are spent in the tropical heat cooking up beats. Over the years an audio diet that includes salsa, merengue, reggaeton and other local music mixed with old jungle tapes, Rinse FM sets and lots of dub has helped them to build a unique and captivating sound that combines all those things.
The spirit of hardcore, jungle and garage from the UK are all evident from the UK Funky rhythms and rumbling sub bass in ‘Zarbak’ to the melancholy melodic refrains of ‘Dorado’ but there’s something else there too. There’s something tribal in the drums that taps into a deep history of Latin American percussive rhythms and adds a dimension that is clearly their own. If UK bass is about the energy and pressure of the city at night then Caracas bass about the point where the intensity of the city meets the wide open space of the jungle, the beach and the mountains under a carpet of stars. Put the needle on the record, close your eyes and imagine it. Also, there’s remixes from Brackles (Blunted Robots/Planet Mu) and Mr Gasparov (Soul Jazz).

Klute has announced his first album in 2 years titled ‘Music for Prophet’, on his own ‘Commercial Suicide’ imprint. As on his previous albums, Klute stays true to himself with another non-commercial, yet 100% dancefloor friendly longplayer that – just like his excellent dj sets – offers the right balance of musical tunes alongside some real heavy hitters.

That was after he was in a Hardcore Punk band when he was a kid – in the 80′s, called The Stupid. They were really good at first too, but then got boring and fell apart, not after some juicy ego clashes. Anyway, Klute – Tom Withers, started back in 1994, i think when he was asked for a name to keep exclusive to Certificate 18 records when they agreed on 2 tracks to be his first single. It was there he stayed until 2000 when he delivered his 2nd final album for Cert 18 called Fear Of People. At this point in time Tom decided to make a change and realising no one else was interested in releasing his music decided to set up his own label.

With his own platform set up he realized anything was possible, he could even release music by other idiots. Which he did. Perhaps too much. An interesting fact no one knows about Tom Klute is that he is the world’s leading composer of Airport music. Most of you who’ve travelled the friendly skys will have unknowingly heard his works at one time or another. Now we come to 2010 and Klute is ready for fucking more, and more it is with his 6th album “Music for Prophet”.

All of Klute’s previous albums have been released to critical acclaim and this one will not stand behind, showing that Klute’s consistency as an artist reaches into 2010 and beyond. The album which also features a collaboration with Dom & Roland will be released as triple coloured vinyl, 2 X CD and Digital download. The additional CD & digital download package promises bonus material including techno tracks.

2009 was the album year for Paradox Music with the release of Alaska & Paradox’s Isolationist LP and now the label returns to the 12″ fold in 2010, kicking off in style with a new solo 12″ from label boss Dev Paradox. Perhaps the Future is a sinister, mystical, gritty and raw number all rolled into one. The Amen brother break is used to great effect creating an new identity of it’s own with it’s intense eq at the forefront of the mix. Rare thought-provoking vocal samples unveil the track’s story and ethos accompanied by bass booms and mysterious sharp film samples conjour scenes straight from a 70’s detective series. 8-Track is one for the B-boys and displays the producers early foundations in DnB. 8-Track is unique from a breakbeat perspective, and displays a sample contrast between the track’s original 60’s jazz/funk roots and a 90’s hiphop version of the same title. It’s a special one as Boka Records enlists the services of the current Queen of underground Electronic music IKONIKA for a post-garage relick of ‘Flex’d’ (the original was released on DJ Madd’s ‘Better With You EP’ – BOKA020). It was first showcased by Alleycat on her highly successful Kokeshi Podkast series and is currently garnering support from Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1) and Martyn (3024). It’s certainly a musical departure for the Boka camp but 2010 has been all about diversifying and showcasing all styles within the realms of bass music.
DJ Madd is on a heater right now with support for his music coming from all angles, and so the time is right to release argueably his biggest and most supported track ‘Detroit Skank’, first showcased on Skream‘s ‘Stella Sessions’ radio show on RinseFM. It’s a beast of a roller which expertly incorporates dub and techno influences, the bassline on this one is absolutely sick, the likes of Headhunter, Skream, RSD and Akira Kiteshi have been utilising it in the raves to devastating effect.

Smog proudly announces the freshman debut of Pawn & EMU on the imprint. Headshot is a classic Half-Time Dubstep tune, but halfway in between, it picks up into 4/4. Entitled Silence, the album is the work of Robert Henke, the acclaimed software technology developer for Ableton who has been the sole permanent member of the group since founding member Gerhard Behles left in 2004 to focus full-time on the company. According to early reports, the album is a varied one, taking in both slow and fast BPMs, as well as ambient excursions with, as Henke pointedly proclaims on his website, absolutely no compression whatsoever. (Henke’s three year stint as a mastering engineer and vinyl cutter at Berlin’s Dubplates & Mastering has much to do with this decision.) Put together over the course of a year, Silence also takes in field recordings from a variety of places: “Sound sources include field recordings of airport announcements, hammering on metal plates at the former Kabelwerk Oberspree, Berlin, several sounds captured inside the large radio antenna dome at Teufelsberg, Berlin, dripping water at the Botanical Garden Florence, air condition systems and turbines in Las Vegas, Frankfurt and Tokyo, walking on rocks in Joshua Tree National Park, wind from the Grand Canyon, a friend’s answering machine, a printer, conversations via mobile phones, typing on an old Macintosh keyboard and recordings from tunnel works in Switzerland.”
