Commercial Suicide is the vanguard of Drum and Bass and has been since it’s inception 10 years ago. Proving a fertile breeding ground for new approaches to dancefloor Drum and Bass and beyond, it is only now after 10 years that a full compilation has taken shape.

Break, Calibre, Klute, Dub Phizix, Vicious Circle; the list of con- tributors reads like a who’s who of contemporary drum and bass production. The Commercial Suicide ‘Compilation’ features 13 of the best d&b tunes of all styles, from established names to the very hottest new faces on the scene.

The music business has changed immensely over the 10 years since Commercial Suicide was born, but one thing has remained constant; a great compilation can define a genre and it’s era. Call To Arms Call to arms is a heavy breaks based track, with nice ethereal strings. The track starts with a nice string intro and female vocal samples, and then explodes in a shuffled breakbeat, reese-bass inferno.AA. Trash Talk This track is a bit different for secret operations, but it has a feel that i think is suitable for the label. The track starts with a static beat and a nice chord, then it switches to growling bassline and subtle but effective percussion.

Tes La Rok’s highly anticipated debut album entitled ‘Them’ will finally see the light of day. Tes La Rok made his name in dubstep circles in 2007 with the massive “Round The World Girls Remix” which immediately positioned him as one of the most exciting artists and definitely one to watch. Anthem releases such as ‘Under The Dancing Feet’ remix for Clouds, ‘Wikidness Remix’ for Mungo’s Hi-Fi, and ‘Up In The Vip / Living Fire’ on Dub Police were soon followed by bookings at DMZ in Brixton and dubstep mecca FWD>> at Plastic People. ‘Them’ features thirteen tracks engineered with precision and care. ‘Invasion’ sets the album off in a deep and minimal flavour followed by the dark and abyssal ‘Earth’. Tes gives a taste of his old junglist roots on 140bpm amen roller ‘Secrets’ and as a follow-up tests his hands on hip hop vibes in ‘Malfunction’. ‘Tribal Ting’ and ‘Spiritual Ting’ showcase the more known Tes La Rok dubwise production and his profound love to dig dub stepper sounds. ‘What’ and ‘From The Shadows’ combine deep & beautiful atmospheres with post-garage drums patterns and subheavy basslines. To bring the album to a finale and give a hint of the future, ‘Turn It Up’ brings in chopped vocals and raw 808 bass. The production duo of Dual Process, AKA DJ Java and DJ Ben J, have been in the drum & bass scene since before it was being called “The drum & bass scene”. Initially as ravers, then DJs, and now as producers, they have been witness to the progression of the various sub genres that are now present in today’s spectrum of drum & bass music. After releases individually and collectively on several different labels Dual Process are ready to launch their own label aimed at the particular sub genre that they have successfully played in raves, clubs and on radio for the last few years.Straight up, dance floor, jump up is what’s going to be on offer from Audio Hostage Records, and to kick things off we have two heavy slices of face churning, bass ridden, ignorance capable of setting MC’s to self destruct and levelling any sound system.The A. side DRUGS is inspired by the Essex gangster scene that emerged around the early days of rave music. The eerie bleeped out intro soon leads on to brain twisting pulsation of gurgling, stuttering basslines and, for just a few bars, some dubstep breaks to make sure the substance takes hold. Remember, too much of a good thing can be dangerous.The AA. side THUGS is a little more funky but still with a hard edge. Drawing on influences from gangster rap, the bouncy bassline and bongos are backed up with police sirens, gunshots and sporadic hip hop lyrics. Something for the thugs to bounce to but still heavy enough to test any system. Both tracks ore getting heavy support from a range of DJs and radio stations such as, Hype, Crissy Criss, Taxman, Nicky Black Market, Brockie, SS, Jack Frost, Ash Attack, Hoodlum, Logan D, Profile, Pappa G, Vital Elements, Spice, Origin FM and Kool FM.

OH MY DAYS!!! Subtrakt drops the motherload with an album packed with the deepest and finest cuts of sub-driven machine step, by the masters and bringers of 1/4 step Current Value & Dean Rodell – Machine Code!!!’Environments’ has more flavours than an orgy in a Ben and Jerry’s factory, mixing up machine funk in a 1/4 step style with the likes of the already hailed classic ‘Machine Freak’ and the floor pounding “Circadian,” blended with the deeper dub-based creepers like flat line . ‘In the Shell’ and ‘Confessions’ offer a new breed of dubstep a cross of intense techy rhythms and tight grinding bass are compiled with distant haunting pads and vocals that infiltrate and twist your neurons beyond comprehension. Last, but far from least, are the two tracks from me on the album that sum up the diversities of Machine Code’s  ‘Environments’ – ‘Kjg’ is a broken groove number with a growling bass stabbing at air wherever the intense kick pattern allows. This track is laced with ghostly dubby fx that loosely holds the sanity together within its most disturbing sub-existence. ‘The Shadow’ is the complete opposite. Slow, delicate beats produced to perfection give this monster of all bass room to drive through and collapse lungs in its wake. DFRNT is the vowel-less moniker for Edinburgh’s bass-music experimentalist Alex Cowles. Rob Ellis, AKA Pinch is the owner of one of the original and highly influential Dubstep labels Tectonic who have signed, developed and released music from some of the scene’s biggest acts such as Joker, 2562, Cyrus, Digital Mystikz, Skream, Jack Sparrow and of course Pinch. Pinch is also founder of Subloaded, Bristol’s finest Bass rave, who has recently celebrated their 6th Birthday. This is Pinch’s first release on Mala’s DEEP MEDi imprint and we feel it’s his best work to date, we’ll sure you’ll agree. ‘Swish’ has been played relentlessly by Mala over the last year as well as a select lucky few able to get their hands on it such as Skream, Loefah, Youngsta and V.I.V.E.K. ‘Swish’ is classic Pinch, dark, moody and sparse, heavily influenced by Techno, with a sub- bass and kick to destroy any bass bin, pure soundsystem music. ‘Tunnel Home’ on the flip sees Pinch in experimental mode switching up the tempo, 155. This still has the Pinch trademark darkness and efx’s but oozes a stealthily undercurrent and coldness with its complex drum programming and industrial approach, reminiscent of early Photek output.

Started in 2005 as collaboration with a friend, Terrain records had releases from Manchester artists S.N.O & Omen, with remixes from a young Skream, and N-Type. The label lay dormant for 5 years, but for 2011 N-Type has decided to relaunch the label, focusing on 140bpm jungle & hardcore influenced dubstep. For the 3rd release on the label, N-type presents two young artists with a love for the oldskool hardcore junglist sound Benton and ARC 88. A side ‘Having Fun’ by Benton is reminiscent of early Jungle, with rolling amen breaks, thunderous Reece bassline, and classic pitched up female vocals. This tune has been a staple in N-types dubplate collection AA Side ‘2 Many’ by ARC 88 is a dancehall killah! 140bpm jungle rinser, featuring ragga vocals and a euphoric breakdown. Featured on the new Wheel & Deal Records album mix by DJ N-Type, this track is a standard reload. Both tracks are currently being battered by N-Type, Skream, Dismantle, Walsh, Bluesy, Chefal and Cluekid to name a few.

2011 sees the ever-prolific Milyoo stretching out from his Kentucky base, heading for world domination and gracing South-East London’s favourite Cassette Library with his presence along the way. Biogram v2 locks disparate vocal fragments and found sounds into a low-down, cranky House groove, peppered with a boogie down bassline and sweeping, straight-outta-Chi-Town strings. For the flipside, the in-house WNCL remix department selects a few choice clippings from the original to present a jam tailored for the trackheads with their feet on the dancefloor.

After few months of silence we are back with a new massive 12”. This time it’s Jacky Murda and Max Powa, a duo from Barcelona that goes by the name of JingBong Ting. After many years on the jungle scene, in 2006 Jacky started the Little Island project, collaborating in Brighton and Barcelona with UK producer Kion on dubby, deep, rootsy material. Tunes by Kion & Murda started to get rotation in crucial UK dances like DMZ, >>FWD , and SuperDubPressure with djs like Mala, Rusko, Tes La Rok, Joe Nice, Nick Argon, BunZer0, Noah D, Daddy G, N-Type and Itchy Robot picking up on the Little Island sound. 2009 also marked the creation of the “JingBong Ting”, a live act comprised of Jacky Murda and Max Powa. JingBong Ting’s first release dropped in 2010 on WAR records, and the second release , complete with video, “Sundown” featuring Top Cat in May 2011. On the Flip you can find a heavy Ragga-Jungle remix by HoT a DJ and Producerliving in Tula, Russia. In 2009 his remix of „Policeman and Soldiers” appeared on the famous jungle label JungleXpeditions. Today HoT continues to push his sound to the worldwide ragga-jungle massive.

Formed last spring after a trip to LA by Lewis Rainsbury, Alex Bailey and Matt Law, Vondelpark’s early work found release on the Sauna EP, a record that explored the emotional blankness of modern life – plane travel, jet lag, interaction and long distance relationships, yet crackling between Lewis’ haunted voice and haunting vocal samples, Sauna was a work of precocious emotional depth and density. Home recorded and lo-fi, it blended cut-and-paste sampled beats and longingly minimal guitar lines, yet the complexity of arrangements and layers of sounds were made to feel natural and simplistic. Their second EP, nyc bags and nyc stuff, develops on the musical themes of Sauna. Still anchored by Lewis’ tender vocals it’s more abstract in its sampling and feels more musically cohesive. Rather than dealing with the emotional alienation of modernity nyc bags instead feels deeply personal, an exploration of the internal rather than external. Opening track ‘TV’ maybe best exemplifies their use of samples and the way they are built around original work, constructing stuttering melodic evocations that grow from a single repetitive loop to mingle with a sparkling guitar and implacable snatches of vocals. When the beats kick in over the refrain of ‘Colder, faster, TV’ it climaxes so subtly it could almost be missed. Second track ‘Feat B’ is the EP’s most straightforward, almost encroaching on r’n’b in its structure and influence, drawing on the genre’s sentimentality and slow jams and underpinned by a female vocal. Like much of the work on nyc bags the vocals are manipulated in a way that the original sense of what’s been used, sampled and recorded is deviated from to leave just its abstract imprint and after listening for long enough the distinction between original recording and sampling becomes blurred beyond recognition. Like ‘Feat B’, ‘Camels’ also takes something from r’n’b, but more conspicuously draws on the beats of the UK underground.

The two cuts Benga lets loose here on Kapsize, ‘Faithless’ and ‘Acid Lie’, exemplify this finely tuned understanding of how to work a dancefloor into a frenzy without losing one’s cool.So onto the music… ‘Faithless’ has been a staple of Joker’s sets for several months now – a solid power anthem of a tune. The latest Immerse cut sees the label tapping once again into the fertile waters of haunting, leftfield 4/4, showcasing the hitherto unknown talents of El Kid. The eagle-eared out there may have picked up on the Young Echo radio show, which features Sam Kidel (to his folks) alongside West-country compatriots Kahn, Vessel and Zhou showcasing their new tracks and mixes. For most though, this will be the first they hear of the Bristol-born, Brighton-based producer. On both tracks the synthetic sheen of Detroit techno gets refigured into an almost downtempo kind of house music. The melody is king, whatever sonic texture it might manifest in, leaving you with ample layers to get engrossed in. That same quintessential yearning quality ensures that these first offerings from El Kid fit perfectly into the Immerse canon. It’ll shake the right kind of dancefloor, but it’ll also tug at the right kind of heart-strings as well.

Favourites of everyone from Sinden to Mary Anne Hobbs, R1 Ryders follow up the excellent Full Throttle EP with this newie from their self-titled label. Mixing grime, tech and UKF perfectly, these tunes will slot into a huge range of DJ boxes – the awesome “On Your Marks” especially, with its lazer-guided synth melodies, heavy wobble bass and funkified drums making it a real standout. The strings ‘n’ bounce of “Cyber” is similarly epic, while the itchy tech-funk of “Pop Shit Off” is frankly begging to have the acapella from Ludacris’ “What’s Your Fantasy” plastered over it – such is the similarity between their bassy stabs and off-kilter rhythms.

Subtrakt drops the motherload with an album packed with the deepest and finest cuts of sub-driven machine step, by the masters and bringers of 1/4 step Current Value & Dean Rodell – Machine Code!!!’Environments’ has more flavours than an orgy in a Ben and Jerry’s factory, mixing up machine funk in a 1/4 step style with the likes of the already hailed classic ‘Machine Freak’ and the floor pounding “Circadian,” blended with the deeper dub-based creepers like flat line . ‘In the Shell’ and ‘Confessions’ offer a new breed of dubstep a cross of intense techy rhythms and tight grinding bass are compiled with distant haunting pads and vocals that infiltrate and twist your neurons beyond comprehension. Last, but far from least, are the two tracks from me on the album that sum up the diversities of Machine Code’s  ‘Environments’ – ‘Kjg’ is a broken groove number with a growling bass stabbing at air wherever the intense kick pattern allows. This track is laced with ghostly dubby fx that loosely holds the sanity together within its most disturbing sub-existence. ‘The Shadow’ is the complete opposite. Slow, delicate beats produced to perfection give this monster of all bass room to drive through and collapse lungs in its wake. Once you get past Turbo Island, home to some of Bristol’s most dedicated professional drinkers, you’re pretty much in the heart of creative Bristol – Stokes Croft. And right in the centre of Stokes Croft, housed in the basement of an disused bank vault, sits the studio Baobinga shares with I.D., the studio in which the majority of Joint Ventures was created.Across the road is Idle Hands, the new record shop that sprang from the demise of Rooted and which recently saw 2562 turn up for a 3hr in-store session. A few doors up the road is The Croft, home to Pinch’s monthly shindig Dubloaded. This is the UKs largest decriminalized graffiti zone, and new pieces from the cream of the Bristol graf scene are constantly emerging, tying the blank spaces together between chic new cafes and fried chicken joints. Right now, there’s a buzz about the place, as upmarket and no-market are forced to co-exist and build relationships.Joint Ventures, the first album-length project on Build Recordings, is fully a product of Bristol, and particularly Stokes Croft. Whether re-upping on the caffeine in the Algerian cafe across the road while uploading stems for Jack Sparrow over in Leeds, or waiting in the doorway, sheltering in the rain as Guido makes his way down from Gloucester Road, the sense of being at the centre of creative Bristol is palpable throughout. The second release from south London based LV on 2nd Drop, but this one is a little different, you might say more international. Basking in the afterglow of their much hyped Kwaito inspired bomb, Boomslang on Hyperdub last year, the LV trio stick the brakes on and crank up the soulful vibes for this release. With well established roots in South Africa, a recording session at the Red Bull studios in Cape Town saw LV record a number of vocal collaborations with the honeyed-voiced Zaki Ibrahim. Zaki’s Canadian and Burmese heritage not provides her with striking looks but also politically charged ammunition for her lyrics. The third angle of this collaboration is a young band from leafy environs of Oxford. After discovering Message to Bears on YouTube trying to make more dubstep / electronic music, 2nd Drop saw the opportunity to link the disparate groups together. Explode was created, with M2B providing lush piano motifs and subtle strings. So, with such great music and beautiful vocals, we had a hard time limiting our remix options! 1st up is the mysterious Mothy with his Implosion redux. Sounding like Mount Kimbe on Novocaine, the original is dubbed, filtered and squeezed into a cerebral paste.

And as allways this Quadrant release comes with a sexy cover by designer ‘MESK’State Of Mind gets in on a remix for Rage & Rapture and stretches the trance vibe out and adds their signature SOM tech sound.. Didi’s vocals stay intact and sound even more lush as they did before soaring over the beats like a bird above the clouds. ‘A Healthy Distrust’ is on the flip and this one is one to be noticed. Its minimal melancholic vibe is dark and ominous and will suck you in straight away. Heavy big kicks haunt the track like the drums of a voodoo witchdoctor in the jungle. Its spacious vibe is dreamy and eerie at the same time. Keep on your guard and pay attention to this one.Disc 2 holds ‘The Stars Are Bleeding’ Quadrant shows here at what their best at. Sounding like the cry of a 1000 angels falling from heaven. Beautiful and sad at the same time and sending chills down your spine and back up again. The bass line rolls underneath like a bed of feathers giving hope but the outcome is not certain.Citrus saves the best for last and that is of course the title track ‘Dermaphoria’. Quadrant shows there’s a brighter side and makes sure you know it with this uplifting funker. Iberian records comes out of a hibernation period with the a series of “Tax Haven” EPs. This first EP comes from a group of producers located in the Barcelona bass enclave and who have been some of the main players in the monthly B.LOW events there. Dedicated to what the label describes as Bass’n'Groove, this EP contains three varied and original sounding tunes with different Bpms suited to the leftfield of various bass music fields (dubstep/funky/future garage etc). First up sees Mr. Gasparov’s “Transient Love” come in the guise of a house influenced little gem of a tune featuring Japanese vocalist G.Rina (who has previosly worked with RSD and Nicolette) who cooes and whispers about transient lovers. Those of you already aquainted with Mr. Gasparov with his release on Soul Jazz Records “Steppas Delight 2″ compilation will recognize the attention to subtle melodic play. There is an overall summery vibe coming here – so something to warm us all up with and make us look ahead to brighter days. Accompany with a mojito and some afternoon sun!Next up sees Nehuen’s “Between Love and Hate” which is a tense stripped down bass’n'beat workout with a persistant bass riff and schizoid strings bringing the darkness. Nehuen is an artist that usually getting support from Dusk + Blackdowns Rinse radio show. There is a grimy and ruff feel here not to dissimilar to some Soulja releases from back in the day. London grime producer Swindle follows up his incredible Planet Mu EP with another slab of funked-up grime, this time for a rapidly expanding Rwina Records. Swindle’s return marks a slightly stripped-down sound: the funk is meaner, heavier, and nastier. ‘Playground’ grooves on rainbow synths and leisurely, drawn-out melodies, as a boogie bassline carves memorable phrases in the ground below. All of this is shoved in an approachable halfstep template that means the track could just as easily slot into any dubstep set as the grime scene in which Swindle dominates. Did we mention there’s a killer freestyling organ solo in the breakdown?On the b-side, we’re treated to a monstrous remix of SRC’s Rwina anthem ‘Goin Out,’ where that track’s quick and vibrant skip is slowed right down to a trickling drawl. The brusque melodic motifs of the original are flattened out into irresistibly squiggling melodic tangents, and the whole thing is given a muscular makeover that turns the 8-bit funk into lifelike grime. The beats are beefed up — Mario’s emphatic ‘ohs’ hit with every beat like he’s in pain — and the track’s bubble and boil over uncontrollably, a volatile concoction that recklessly sends out unforgettable melodic hooks in all directions.The EP ends with the softer ‘Who’s Quicker’ — which simultaneously speaks to old (and I mean old)-school grime with its barebones percussion breathy samples, but its heads-down meditative bassline speaks to the more reflective side of dubstep. With the Playground EP on Rwina, Swindle reveals what you already knew: that he’s an immensely talented and versatile producer on the top of the grime scene, applying a wide-ranging set of appealing influences to a template that hits home for both grime and dubstep fans. That it comes on Rwina is no surprise: a great producer deserves an equally great label.

Planet Mu up the game once more with their footwork crusade in 2011 with this excellent EP from one of the scene’s top producers, DJ Spinn, showing off his versatile styles across six tracks. ‘Man I Do It’ is also joint release with Chrissy Murderbot’s Loose Squares label, marking the start of a new Chicago-based but internationally-minded imprint dedicated to forward-facing footwork, jit and juke-house sounds. A footwork originator, Spinn started off as a dancer for the House-O-Matics crew in the mid-90s before following with DJing and production, working up to his current status as one of the scene’s most impor-tant figures. The EP mixes styles and sample sources to create a listenable but frenetic blend of tracks, from the more classic chanting juke of ‘Fall Back’, to the futuristic hip hop infused tracks like ‘Studio’ with its shimmering R&B sample and keys that remind the listener of classic jungle, to the off-key synths and vocoder of ‘Man I Do It’, which repeats and loops vocal phrases.The EP also includes the strangely relaxed ‘I Really Feel’, which subtly builds emotional soul strings and looped vocal samples into a barely-there melody, while ‘U Don’t Need’ and ‘Lol’ chop up 70s soul ballads into jagged, cubist shapes.

This single precedes his new album ‘The Dissolve’, due out in April. ‘Allele’ builds from echoey drums into a tight juke-influenced drum pattern with lots of tight edits, before adding a vocal that hints at old school hardcore, wavering chords and drops, before the whole thing finally resolves into a restrained but ravey breakbeat. ‘Other People’ simply but effectively mixes hazy, live sounding 2-step drums with a lush bitter-sweet melody reminicent of the Drexciya offshoot TheOtherPeoplePlace, which glides subtly through a back-ground of shimmering effects and delays.

With years of working intently at the nexus of instrumental beats and electronic music, it’s time for The Timps EP.The Timps is Real Electro. Faceless, percussive, underground with a sci-fi feel. Dark, futuristic and dancefloor-oriented, punctuated with elements of 80’s Detroit Techno. Om Unit has blasted his sound into deep space, adding eerie electronic futurism to his niche blend of slow boogie, house, techno and hip-hop beats with those classic analogue synth lines. It nods to both the ever exciting and forever morphing instrumental beat scene and to the heavy flow of early pioneering Detroit techno via UR and the likes of Drexciya/Aux 88. The Timps sees Om Unit interfacing funk and futurism. Analogue bass lines are sequenced, arpeggiated and twisted to devastating effect. Synthetic riffs and atonal sound effects with heavy reverbs, delays and phasers drift along with eerie synthetic strings emphasizing the retro futuristic themes of the music. Remixes come from Frite Nites’ US beat maker and a one-to-watch in 2011, Salva, and Wagon Repair’s Hrdvsion aka Nathan Jonson who, along with brother, Matthew, is part of North American Techno’s first family. Salva’s rework of Prawn Cocktail pulses and throbs towards its intergalactic destination, with beats that speed along with accelerating urgency. Hrdvsion on the other hand takes The Timps and disconnects completely to float off alone into deep space with his epic, eerie and atomspheric reworking. This is Electro. Real Electro. Atlas Recordings is the brainchild of the legendary DJ Lee. Conceived in 2002 and set up as a platform for his burgeoning production output, it garnered a devoted following from the very first release, the huge ‘Udon / Double Down’ from Lee himself and long time cohort D.Kay. With a bulging DJ diary, Lee lacked both the time and energy needed to really give it the care and attention it needed and Atlas sadly closed its doors just a year later on release number three. Fast forward to 2010 however and Atlas is making a comeback with Lee vowing to make it a success again this time round. The label’s sixth release is no exception. DVA’s remix of Cooly G’s ‘Dis Boy’ turns an already seductive track into a spaced-out dream: in the place of Cooly’s stripped down production it’s got all the psychedelic electronic subtleties and twists you might expect to hear in a Berlin techno tune, but actually brings her sophisticated vocal melodies more to the fore than the original version. The rhythm’s syncopations, meanwhile, move along in lazy leaps as if dancing in lowered gravity. Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 perform a similar job of total transformation on DVA’s own ‘Jelly Roll’. They play the original’s cheeky, cheery melody backwards, forwards, sideways and upside-down, bouncing it off itself in a hall of audio mirrors and allowing glassy synths to slide between the beats and bass. It’s a strange, slightly sinister and intoxicating reworking – one to get lost in. Bonus track ’32Da4′ is something else entirely; as you may guess from the title it’s in 3 time – a bizarre, slithering dubstep waltz that flows out of the speakers and around itself in unique style. Lesser producers would build whole movements on such an innovative tune, but for DVA it’s just another step in a compelling musical evolution.

With major DJ support from the likes of Pinch, Ntype, Loefah, Cyrus, Joe Nice and 12th Planet, it’s obvious that dubstep DJs and fans will see this as a record that quite simply must be bagged and Tunnidge is a name to hold up alongside the very best the scene has to offer.

Following on from last year’s impossibly good The Love Quadrant EP by Space Dimension Controller, Kinnego Records return with two tracks from label owner Boxcutter, his first new material since the Arecibo Message album on Planet Mu. “Moon Pupils” is a gentle, trippy bit of 2-step, full of tweaked analogue melodies and tape echoed flute. On the flip, Boxcutter & Kab Driver take inspiration from vintage library music and dubbed out disco. “2Time” is all handclaps and insistent synth chords, with two woozy string-led breakdowns. Kab Driver previously worked on KGO001 as part of Kinnego Flux.

Anyone who witnessed Excision destroy dancefloors in Paris, London, Bristol, Manchester and a host of other European cities on his recent tour will understand the effect his music is having around the world. EX7 is Rottun’s sister label, and was home to one of Excision’s most recognisable hits yet, the infamous ‘Swagga’ (produced alongside Datsik). Here Excision teams up with another member of the Rottun camp to create two incredible pieces of filthy dubstep. ‘Heavy Artillery’ features Messinian, one of the USA’s most well known D&B and dubstep MCs. Coming next will be a 4 track EP from John Tejada & Josh Humphrey.

Tejada and Humphrey made their debut together late in 09 with their “Marooned,” ep. “Assimilation” continues the theme of being marooned in Los Angeles. The four works compiled here are the result of the best moments out of 20 recording sessions. The music is for the most part assembled with analog instruments with Humphrey and Tejada bringing their modular gear together for the sessions. Humphrey’s knowledge of synths and programming is quite extensive. He until recently helped operate LA based Big City Music, a dealer of modular and boutique synthesizers.

The four works cover a wide range. “Assimilation” builds up panning modular basslines and swirling percussion with a building chord line that brings things together as the drums build. “Culture Shock” uses pitch shifting trickery to transpose the main melodic hook slamming it into nasty modular bass modulation giving the track it’s pretty/dark edge. “Adaptation” keeps it’s modular touches a bit more subtle focusing on classic melodic Tejada chords and nostalgic beats. “Subversion” rounds things out with a non 4/4 piece perhaps being the most nostalgic moment of the ep. This highly melodic uplifting track takes it’s cues from happy musical memories. Classic chords, 808 beats, and some melodic modular lines to close out the ep.

One of most innovative producers in the Drum & Bass and electronic music scene, Sam KDC display a depth and psychedelic mood. stunningly beautiful music as opposed to simply ‘drum & bass’. Sam explains ‘The 12″ is a really special one to me, both the tunes reflect some really deep rooted memories and feelings of mine. I used to feel like that as a kid listening to Pink Floyd, especially at the beginning of “Comfortably Numb”, something else that was very influential to this piece. The other side, “Perish” is a really personal to me. I finished it and loved it but didn’t want to send it to anyone. It was my housemate at the time, Frank, that convinced me to show it to others, not through what he said, but the fact he asked me for a copy of it and I used to come home and I’d hear it blasting out of his room and he doesn’t even like DnB, so that was a sign to me for that one… The first vocal right at the beginning says “I feel safe with you” and that was something that was missing in my life at the time, and in truth, still is… I called it “Perish” because I sampled a home video from a couple of years ago that I wanted gone, I got rid of the video once I’d taken the audio from it and so it was like that moment in my life was trapped in that piece of music, with all other remaining context of it lost… Perished… taken from:

Although you may not have yet heard his name, P.U.D.G.E. has been bubbling up in U.S. beat scene for many years. At age 9, his father gave him a Bass, a Juno synth, a DX drum machine and a Tascam 4 track. He encouraged the boy to start making his own music; P.U.D.G.E. got the bug. By the time young P.U.D.G.E. (thus called because at school he was always extra medium, or less than chubby) hit 13, he had discovered turntableism, and started DJing at house parties around NYC. By his late teens, he had emerged as a promising emcee, standing next to many of the well-known emcees from the Lyricist Lounge; including Mos Def & El P. Still producing, P.U.D.G.E.’s music was starting to gain attention, and his first beat was released on the Vinyl Junkies debut EP. After hearing about the emerging beat scene in L.A., he moved there in 2004, and started getting a few production credits under his belt, including cuts for Rawkus Records and Stacey Epps. After circulating some of his instrumental beat tapes, interest for P.U.D.G.E. started to gain momentum. Early this year, P.U.D.G.E. headed up All Cty’s L.A. series, on a split 10” with Dibiase, preceeding releases from Ras G, Samiyam & Matthewdavid.

‘Let’s Talk’ is a slow burning, ocean deep house tune that capitalizes on the warm punch of the constant kick drum. Driven on by echoed melody snatches, pulsing synthesizer stabs and a husk entombed voice that waxes lyrical about forthcoming plans its unsettling mood is, somewhat surprisingly, it’s optimum strength. ‘Vicodin’ turns the tempo up to a more recognizable dubstep pace but manages to sound totally unique and overtly fresh thanks to its use of intricate percussion and beatless structure. Its a subliminal smash weaved around pounding sub-basses and Detroit-esque piano chords. Matthew Gonsalves, known as Matty G to the world of music, is a pioneer of the US dubstep scene. Since his debut release on the Argon imprint in 2006, Matty has ceaselessly pushed his unique brand of hip hop inspired, 808 bass workouts, that have been destroying clubs the world over. His 2007 release ‘50, 000 Watts’ shook up the scene with its stripped down breaks and punishing subs, finding its way into the bag of just about every DJ worth his salt, becoming something of an instant classic. Its profound influence on the scene is still being felt today, and it has become one of those tracks that people are still searching Discogs to get hold of, at any price. His 2008 LP, ‘Take You Back,’ cemented his placing in the flourishing dubstep scene, exploring his diverse musical influences and amalgamating the sounds of hip hop, funk, soul, reggae and jungle into a 140bpm template. It still remains one of the most accomplished albums to have been made in the scene. After linking up with Dub Police head honcho Caspa, who remixed his massive ‘West Coast Rocks’ for Argon, he has recently officially joined the Dub Police crew, the fruits of which we will see over the coming months.

Finished copies. The latest release on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint is a four track double pack Vinyl shrink-wrapped with a 45min mix CD. The mix features all the tracks on the E.P. and upfront dubplates from V.I.V.E.K It comes on the back of his first Medi release last year ‘Kulture’ b/w ‘Meditation Rock’ and countless dubplates that you’ll no doubt have heard if you’ve checked the Anti Social Entertainment on Rinse FM. Fusing digidub, sound system deep bass, rolling percussion, a hint of Berlin techno it all adds up to those ‘Medi’ style vibes; eyes down, blissed out, heavy weight music.
The title track, ‘Feel It’ kicks things off in fine style with some of the most infectious rolling tablas – his percussion is just sublime. A vocal sample declaring the weight of your bass and the largeness of your soundsystem is all the track needs to usher in a chest thumping sub sonic bass tone and there is no way back you’re sucked into that soup of sub bass frequencies. ‘Grandfather Clock’ counts down to a dance floor meltdown when the metronome-like sample, half tempo drum patterns and hefty bass melts into blazing techno buzzes that just keep coming, it’s those killer synths that make it, truly coming from nowhere.
The deeply blissful ‘Motherland’ is one for the meditative crew, subtle but weighty bass pulses roll off half stepping rhythms, tablas and all that good stuff all accented with Indian vocals instrumentation. It’s so deep, minimal it would make Youngsta proud. The final track ‘Strategy’ is a roller with a garage kind of swing to it, it skips along with big room dub techno chords twisting in and out of the bumpy beats it really comes alive and picks up the pace. Pure vibes all the way.

Finish copy. Scorn’s fourteenth full length release remains in the vibe and tempo of modern dubstep while adding a brand new element to the Scorn sound: a live drummer, Ian ‘Yan’ Treacy. The vibrant sounds of the kit are run thru the filters and dub wizardry of Mick Harris, former drummer of Napalm Death and Guinness World Record Holder for composer of the world’s shortest song. The tracks are a journey into dark atmospheres and atomic warhead bass, with more variation and hue than 2007′s ‘STEALTH’. Yet on ‘Refuse; Start Fires’ Harris has returned to painting angry pictures with more colours than simply black – the record takes on new territory at the 70 bpm mark, and the live kit gives the tracks a more fluid groove than ever in places. But this is Scorn, and Scorn delivers darkness and anger like no one else, with merciless cuts such as Bear Felt Nowt and Shitwind’s A-Coming providing harsh atmospheres and endurance test bass wobble like only Mick Harris can dish out. Scorn is an entity – for over 15 years Mick Harris has not relented with the project’s dubbed out beats, film noir atmospheres, and over the top bass compulsions. ‘Refuse; Start Fires’ is perhaps the angriest and most well articulated of his projects in the last decade.
