Duffstep’s debut album ‘Getting to Sirius’ is a heady potion laced with influences of dub and down tempo beats, winding through layers of melody and synths whilst vocals soften the blow providing a nice, warm and fuzzy edge to the thick slabs of sonic concrete. Though you won’t have to wait before a nice big bass-line knocks you down on your arse again.

It’s a migration then from early morning blissful sweeps and sonic washes. It is the soul of rave, it is it’s long dead cousin come back to haunt it. It is the sound rave makes when it re-enters the earth’s atmosphere. It isn’t a simple re-working of what has been showcased in recent live outings, it is more contemplative; unlike his more recent outings it is less aimed at the dance-floor and is instead a more, down-tempo, relaxed affair.

Aside from travelling to Sirius on weekends, Duffstep can also be found sharing a stage with some of the biggest names in electronic music, Flying Lotus, Pinch, Martyn, Commix, Ramadanman, Pariah and Kode 9 to name a few. As well as teaming up alongside Rebel Overlay one of the VJ scenes brightest assets, Duffstep has begun touring a massive live show that is set to be unveiled from Timbuktu to Teignmouth.

Accompanying the debut LP will be 3 remix EP’s straddling the realms of dubstep, house and disco from an ever emerging pool of old and new guard. Remixes split across both digital and vinyl include re-tellings from FaltyDL, Elliphino and Young Montana? On the dub orientated EP with Mark E, Session Victim and Riley Reinhold, Loose fit, Social Monster and Duffstep’s Thursday night drag act alter-ego Duff Disco taking things to house and disco dancefloors. With original material, remix EPs, a debut album and an ever growing touring schedule, Duffstep is going to be hard to ignore in 2011.

It is the first port of call for a whole roll-call of artists from original nuttahs like, Mala, Coki, Loefah, Burial, Kode 9, Skream and Benga to the international artists who only want their shit cut at Transition, as well as a heady brew of musicians including everyone from Jah Shaka to funky man of the moment DJ Paleface to avant garde ambient don Christian Fennesz. Basically, Jason is sound, in both senses of the word.

Initially, most of the custom came from the reggae community. “We stuck a load of flyers out and waited. I learnt my craft cutting reggae. It’s a serious situation when you have two different sounds playing a clash and you are cutting for both sides there is no room for error.” Word soon spread and thanks to some flyers in Big Apple and a call from Magnetic Man’s Arthur ‘Artwork’ Smith, Jason became the man that all the early dubstep producers went to for their dubs. “I just got into work one day and I was busy.” People also knew that what happens in Transition stays in Transition. “We’ve got to keep secrets. I can’t tell anyone what the DJ before has cut, that’s an unfair advantage. Cutting engineers have to know how to keep quiet.” Guys like Joel from Scratch Perverts, or guys from the garage days. I just want to be the best cutting engineer in the world, it’s that simple. It’s not really a money thing. Obviously I want to earn money but more than that I want to be the best. You don’t see many cutting engineers in the club, but I do actually like the music. I wouldn’t do it if
I didn’t.”

It’s also why he runs two labels, one named after the cutting house Transition and another named Ringo, after Jason’s sadly departed dog who would be there, lying under the desk at 2am when Jason would be cutting and cutting for late night sound-clash business. The labels are going strong which is why we have compiled these CDs of past and future releases.

My friends exposed me to some early electronic stuff and I was blown away immediately. Since being established back in 2005, Eight:FX has gone on to release singles from Dubstep’s most established names as well as supporting upcoming talent, including the likes of Kromestar, Tes La Rok, Djunya, Nika D (Virus Syndicate), MRK1, Cyrus (Random Trio) and Hatcha. Hatcha is the original Dubstep DJ, mixing the genres first compilation, holding down the first commercial Dubstep radio show on London’s Kiss 100 and having countless releases on some of Dubstep’s longest and most established labels. These two club smashes are created alongside Lost – a producer who since being signed exclusively to the H.E.N.C.H label has received consistent support from Dubstep’s biggest DJs. On the flip Bare Noize follow up their Dubstep chart topping debut release, Make Some F*cking Noize, which has gone on to gain huge support and feature on various compilations including The Cut Up Boys’ ‘Mash Up Mix 2009’ (Ministry Of Sound). Now locking down sets all over the UK and continuing to release on leading Dubstep labels, namely Eight:FX and Z Audio, Bare Noize now present two of their best productions to date with these ominous Dubstep anthems.
