SOM011 – Black Sun Empire, State Of Mind & Bulletproof / NC-17, Telekinesis feat KC – Roulette / Micronaps – 12″ Vinyl
SOM 011: State of Mind, Black Sun Empire and Bulletproof – Roulette – State of Mind and Black Sun Empire are back on SOM wax. This time around Bulletproof gets in on the action, and the result: the mighty Roulette. Roulette is unashamedly heavy but at the same time super smooth, and it has been doing the damage all over the world in the sets of some of the scene’s biggest names. NC-17, Telekinesis feat KC – On the other side Micronaps is just as crisp. Labels from all walks including Virus, BSE and C4C were literally begging for this tune but somehow SOM got ahold of it. What more is there to say than this tune absolutely smacks it: A real underground favorite. Here is what some fans have to say about this great 12 on soundcloud:”This is amazing, must own this”.”Flawless production! It sounds super open and clean, couldnt have been better!””There should be a download button about here…””Thats a hell of a 12 inch”

SUBTITLESUK006 – Lenzman & Treez Ft. Jo-s – Stellar / Stuck – 12″ Vinyl
DMND001 – BTK – Things I Do / Things I Do (Spectrasoul Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Brazil has turned out some of the world’s greatest D&B ever since DJ Marky was discovered by Bryan G and his V Recordings camp. From Marky XRS and Patife to one of Brazil’s other great D&B talents, BTK, you know that you’re always getting quality music with something special injected into it. Drawing from his love of Metalheadz and classic drum & bass, BTK lends ‘Things I Do’ a nostalgic feel that’s undoubtedly going to get dancefloors fired up, but has a refinement and class that comes with maturity. Shogun warriors Spectrasoul step up for remix duty on the flip, taking BTK’s original and smoothing it out to its very barest elements. It’s a mystery how Spectrasoul manage to make a few minimal parts fit and move together effortlessly, but this remix is further proof that they’re on top of their game. This is the first release of many from the brand new Swiss label Demand Records. To throw in a junglist cliche – don’t sleep! Support from DJ Lee, John B, Simon Bassline Smith, Nicky Blackmarket, Flight, Storm, to name a few..

SHB010 – Panic Girl – Panic Girl Remixes – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy promo. For over six years, shadybrain is forcing innovation in Drum and Bass. With it’s 10th vinyl this is made clear more than ever. ‘The Panic Girl Remixes’ join various high profile artists who have never been combined on a release before: dBridge, Phace, Duo Infernale, Skyence, as well as newcomer Sone. The base for all their remixes was Panic Girl’s ‘Burn And Rise EP’, a trip-hop release which was published on shadybrain in early 2010. Phace gets the EP going with his trademark machine-funk sound twisting up the title track ‘Burn And Rise’, while Duo Infernale burn a deep but dancefloor oriented fireworks of Panic Girl’s ‘Hide And Seek’. dBridge himself then extracts the essence of ‘Blue Lights’, taking the listener to a place dark as eternal night. The release is completed by two non Drum and Bass tunes by Skyence and Sone, the first one delivering finest electronica with a wonky groove, while Sone is unleashing a monster of mashed up Dubstep. DJ Support from: Pendulum, Doc Scott, dBridge, Noisia, Phace, DJ Flight, Loxy, Klute,C4C, Kasra, Cern, Misanthrop, Counterstrike, and many more..’

MENTALLY005 – Cooh – Are You There / Express – 12″ Vinyl
As roll onto release 5 of the Mentally Disturbed Series already we thought it be nice to crack your skulls on a bigger and wider scale.. None other than the almighty Cooh racks up a devastating 12 for Mentally after wreaking havoc on labels like PRSPCT, Position Chrome & Genosha.. He keeps his standards high with ‘Are You There’ a thrashed out sound system destroyer.. Once this one drops cooh unleashes the big bass line pressure combined with his garbage bin breaks. With one blow he sends you through shipping yards & industrial warehouses so you better be prepared to pack the punch. ‘Express’ takes you for a ride on the demon train from hell.. there are no stops, changes or delays.. this is a one way ticket to the underground itself. With 500mph it will storm through any PA and crush anybody that stand in its way. Additionally this is Break’s first release after his own ‘Resistance’ album on Symmetry. WARM018 – Seba – Vanity / Nostalgia – 12″ Vinyl
Not many producers in drum & bass or music in general can have the sort of career where every piece of music that comes out of their studio is pure excellence. Sebastian Ahrenberg is one of the few musicians that fits easily into the category of excellence. This is his fourth release with Warm Communications and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results!A. VANITY – This is a proper bass workout from the man. Things kick off with super snappy breaks with amazing effects layered on top! Dark atmospheres creep in giving the tune amazing tension leading into what the tune is all about….bass! Distorted, thunderous bass leads the tune into some balanced keys giving the tune that perfect balance of rough and smooth Seba is known for!AA. NOSTALGIA – If you’re a fan of Seba’s uplifting, spine-tingling pieces…then this tune is for you! A solid, rolling break leading into uplifting synths and a guitar-like melody while the pulsating bassline will give any soundsystem a run for it’s money! This is a truly “hands in the air” kinda vibe that we know and love from Seba!

GEN175005 – Switch Technique – Did / Exo – 12″ Vinyl
Switch Technique is the first artist to get a solo release on The Outside Agency’s groundbreaking crossover label One Seven Five. So, what does this mean? It means that he has pulled off that which only very few can manage: he mixed hardcore kickdrums and drum & bass snares into what has become known as crossbreed.. and he made it sound good. DID is a deep dive into the mind of a psychopath, continuously hammered by gutwrenching kickdrum one hundred and seventy-five times per minute. EXO on the flip strips the crossbreed sound down to its bare exoskeleton. Go on, put on the exoskeleton and see for yourself!

DISF012 – Phaeleh – Falling – 12″ Vinyl
‘Falling’ Disfigured Dubz kick off the New Year with this single by Bristolian producer Phaeleh, hot off the back of his debut album ‘Fallen Light’. With this offering, he sticks very much to his trademark style. An intricate and ever progressing drum track provides the spine for the thought provoking cloudy atmospheres, glittering melodies and moody chords. He somehow manages to catch a similar vibe to early hardcore and acid house with its feeling of optimism and a new found freedom. Vocal snippets of ‘Life is so crazy ‘ and ‘let you go’ give the track a sense of meaning and compliment the musical elements perfectly. ‘Falling (Kulture Remix)’ On the flipside we have a remix by fellow Disfigured Dubz artist Kulture. He’s obviously picked up on the hardcore vibe and pushed it even further in that direction by adding an amen which automatically makes it sound like a lost hit from the early 90s. Beefing up the bass line and more vocal processing turns the original calm inducing track into an absolute dance floor destroyer but without over complicating it. An interesting insight into how dubstep could be taking dance music full circle.

12” YELLOW VINYL – Ltd to 500 Copies Worldwide. Bristol based Skinnz unleashes his debut solo release after more than 5 years in the game! His productions date back to an appearance on a Destructive Recordings compilation back in 2005 alongside the likes of Skream, Toastyboy, Distance and Vex’d. More recently his collabs with I.D have seen releases on labels such as Pinch’s Earwax and Double Science.“Keep It Gutta” features soaring synthetic soul chords, like Joker’s ‘purple wow’ sound with aggro elements sublimated into a crisp urban elegance. “Euphorbia” strays into Martyn/Joy Orbison territory, its fizzing drone chords and soul vocal samples compressed around a bassier but Grime-inclined beat to breathless effect!Currently receiving heavy Radio1 / 1Xtra support from Mistajam and Ras Kwame, along with Mary Anne Hobbs, 16bit, Kito, Pinch, Mensah, I.D, Baobinga, Akira Kiteshi, Jayglo & more!

PL012 – The Subdivision / 501 / HLZ – Open Your Eyes EP – 12″ Vinyl
The SubDivision return home to Paradise Lost with the Open Your Eyes EP: epic vibes, hypnotic bass work, and complex programming manifest themselves as what might be considered their best work to date, and surely a production which defines their unique style for building cinematic tracks of epic proportions. For variations on the Open Your Eyes theme, Finnish mercenary 501 was brought in and produces a devastating, sinister, half-stepping remix monster. This version utterly destroys the dancefloor in usual 501 fashion, but adds a twist of darkness. HLZ (worked for Drum and Bass labels Chronic, Soul:R and Liquid V Recordings) was recruited to offer up his own unique take on Dubstep for a second variation on the original. He uses signature bassline science combined with smacking, dancefloor-friendly drums, then tosses in an epic breakdown-buildup combination followed by a monumental drop that’s sure to get the dance jumping.

TEC047 – Illum Sphere – Dreamstealin – 12″ Vinyl
Manchester’s Illum Sphere makes his debut for Tectonic, the young producer unleashing his finest work to date with two killer cuts that demonstrate a wealth of musical influences while setting new directions and expectations for the post-dubstep generation to look towards. It’s a fresh start to the year and a taste of the way Tectonic is moving in 2011.The lead cut is ‘Dreamstealin’, a powerful, twisted track that opens with a dramatic, tense intro – a soundtrack to enormous alien machinery grinding into action. A demonic cello forms the backbone to the piece, warped into a cybernetic frenzy and sounding like nothing you’ve heard before, scrambling into a bit-crushed radio frequency sweep at the drop. Then, in comes the frantic drum pattern – high energy movements in a heavily swung style, with hints of J Dilla or Flying Lotus as the tune builds up again by means of a demented, brooding melody. Eventually it peaks and slips into a more relaxed, funked up vibe, easing down from tense build. Dark energy for the leftfield dancefloor at its finest. Flip to ‘Blood Music’, an equally dreamy affair, though less tense and foreboding. Silky melodic lines run over heavily grooved but rolling beats with a friendly nod to the sound of Burial with its post-club come-down “melt in ecstasy” vibe. Finally, an excellent remix of ‘Blood Music’ by friend and fellow Mancunian Indigo pushes into a ghostly new incarnation with swooping bass and more broken, fragile beats.

ROTTUN007 – Downlink – Biohazard / Zombie Apocolypse – 12″ Vinyl
Downlink has been punishing dancefloors all over the planet with his heavy brand of dubstep. With roots in Jungle & DnB, he is no stranger to the vile side of subsonic dance music. Growing up in a cold industrial town in British Columbia, Canada, he was first introduced to dubstep in 2007 and soon after took to production. While maintaining an appreciation for the sparse and laid-back vibes of the old school, Downlink set out to explore a more frantic, adrenaline fuelled style, influenced by everything from heavy metal to astrophysics. His first two releases charted at #1 on several popular online music stores and soon he found his way onto Rottun Recordings which seemed a suiting place for his music. While consistently coming up with sick material time after time, he has gained DJ support from the likes of Nero, Excision, Datsik, Rusko, Dieselboy, Crookers and many more. Downlink is not one to be pigeon-holed and is constantly on a quest to evolve and refine his sound. With this in mind, one thing will always remain constant – a pure unadulterated heavy listening experience…

KAP006 – L-Wiz – Straitjacket / 4.42 OZ – 12″ Vinyl
Kapsize kick starts 2011 with 2 fresh cuts from a new label artist: L-Wiz. While L-Wiz is new to Kapsize, the Swedish duo are in no way new to the dubstep scene – drawing attention with killer tracks like ‘Girl From Codeine City’ and the classic ‘Girlfriend’, the production pair have been making high quality dubstep tracks since the early 2004-5 days, even launching the first ever release on Dub Police! It is with pleasure that we announce ‘Straitjacket’ and ’4.42 Oz’ find a home on Kapsize! Keeping in the spirit of Joker’s own melodic productions, L-Wiz take a different angle from their previous output – pushing layer after layer of perfectly produced synth lines in harmonic syncracy. ‘Straitjacket’ is the more dancefloor focussed of the two cuts, with a sleazy, low-slung take on the ‘purple’ sound we all know and love at Kapsize – while keeping it heavily weighted to provide bass fans with plenty of satisfactory rumble! Flip for the equally melodic ’4.42 Oz’ which takes a more relaxed approach in vibe, taking things in a futuristic direction while simultaneously referencing the past. Beautifully produced elegant music that you will keep coming back to. DJ support from everyone from Plastician to 2562 as well as of course being a main staple in Joker’s own sets last year.

SPEAKS004 – Emvee / Graphics – Future Runnings EP – 12″ Vinyl
The power of youth is being felt all around the world right now, as dictators fall and governments wobble in the face of youngsters fighting against apparently dark futures. Here, Shifting Peaks harnesses some of that energy for a split 12” double header from two of the most promising young producers around. We’d like to think 18 year old South Londoner Alfie Macgibbon aka Graphics has been out there sticking it to The Man whilst jumping around to POW! and keeping the Old Bill on their toes. But we don’t hear much from him tbh, and from the depth and quality of these two future-steppers,’ Blue Top’ and ‘Brian Said to Me’, we reckon he’s been hidden away, quietly building his own vision of the future while real life goes on elsewhere. Birminghams’ Emvee’s is of an age where he doesn’t need to worry about the Tory Millionaire clubs further education plans, having established himself way back in the heady days of 2009 with his landmark ‘Glitch Dub’ on NMBRS. Now he unleashes a tropical banger in the shape of the percussive floor shaker ‘Windrush’ and a driving, Funky-tech bumper ‘Strength’. Two young producers, 4 tracks, a world to win. Keep the fires burning brother and sisters.

HRMN014 – Pavan – Holy Volt – 12″ Vinyl
You’re about to experience the first long-playing album of Pavan, the originator of Skweee-music. Skweee, also known as the synthetic Scandinavian funk, is a worldwide phenomena hailing originally from the frosty alleys of Stockholm and Helsinki. The raw, unpolished electronic funk tracks of this album were recorded in 2003-2006, when the term itself didn’t yet exist. Now, half a decade later, these rough diamonds finally see the light of day. This magnificient album is sprinkled with analogue synthesizer magic, extraordinaire soundscapes and body rockin’ grooves tight as spandex. But don’t listen to us, judge for yourself. Take a trip through the electro ragga of ‘War’ and ‘Buttons’ and simmer down with the trippy krautness of ’1000 Years’. In this world overpopulated by soulless throwaway electronic music it’s very rare and touching to hear something as pure and honest as ‘Holy Volt’.

Dubline presents their latest hot signing from Israel: Tomba (Buygore, Rottun, Basspunch Records). CIV017 – Reso – Valken EP / War Machine – 12″ Vinyl
Forever spawning the next generation of bass mutations, Civil Music’s Reso brings an unsurpassed low-end density and textured sound that decidedly makes genres redundant. Wobble, hypercrunk, glitch, hip hop, dubstep, industrial and D&B all blend together for a concoction that only Reso can create, and one that consistently redefines the electronic sphere. In-between working with Hospital Records (with Slap Chop) and remixing the likes of Drop The Lime, Foamo, Qemists and dEbruit (among others), with ‘War Machine / Valkan’ Reso is setting the precedence for 2011, giving the bass world a fierce blueprint to follow.Make no mistake: ‘War Machine / Valkan’ is not a record for the faint-hearted. It’s certainly not suitable background music, and probably should come equipped with an explicit NSFW label. It will, however, be a record for discerning listeners who appreciate the subtleties and complexities that go into high-tech productions that carry this much conceptual and compositional weight, as is always the case with London’s chameleonic and many-masked mastermind. This is the sound of the end of the world, of machines breaking and technology folding, when all that’s left is carnal rage and chaos. A forceful onslaught of sound, the four tracks on Reso’s ‘War Machine / Valkan’ EP intricately mesh high amp leads and emphatic beats that entrance any dancefloor into riotous frenzy.Brutal rhythms command and frequencies drop as ‘War Machine’ kicks things off: a most fitting title for the ominous sounds of all hell breaking loose, where nothing – and no one – will remain in one piece. The rugged sonic explosion is carefully measured, as tearing beats fly recklessly like vicious shrapnel slamming against tough, concrete bass walls. ‘Expansion Ratio’ teases with elements of a break from the chaos, and then slams back down with bumping melodies and hyperactive leads. ‘Syndicate’ takes a page out of the tech end of the D&B book, but with drum patterns that change so unexpectedly, heads will be thrown into another bass dimension. A mastery of rhythm and warm synth-laden fills, the EP does tease with a wash of hope, with his expansive ‘Aethra’ conjuring the peaceful feeling of the early atmospheric tracks of Photek and Bukem. Yet a calm shuddering bassline serves as a foreboding reminder of where the EP has just come from, and that perhaps the peace may not last long. We’ll just have to wait and see what lies await in Reso’s next project: his debut album due later in 2011 on Civil Music.

New D&B Releases

AMLP01 The Mesozoic Era (Triple Snow White Vinyl) – Alaska Arctic Music 12″ Vinyl x 3
Limited edition (Triple Snow White Vinyl). Often choosing to position himself as an outsider, Alaska’s success has never been limited to that of the UK- orientated drum and bass scene. He has collaborated under the Paradox name with some of greatest contemporary musicians the world has to offer, including Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Shobha Gurtu, Toshinori Kondo and Bernie Worrell. His new album The Mesozic Era which is to be released on May 24th 2010, is the third in a trilogy of solo Alaska lp’s and a follow up to 2006’s successful Arctic Foundations. The stunning packaging boasts Triple Snow-White Vinyl and a Solid-Black Compact Disc, something that hasn’t been manufactured before in drum and bass. As a bonus, the CD includes more from the infamous Sample Me series – specially edited breakbeat samples for aspiring producers to loop and splice – and shows Alaska’s commitment to the grass roots of the scene, giving something back to the fans and those he’s inspired. When he’s not in the studio, Alaska is inevitably on tour and continues to entertain crowds with his live shows truly worldwide (having only just returned from Alaska shows in Australia). Armed only with his trusty Amiga, synths and a mic, he performs a truly live PA, reconstructing tracks from his back catalogue and editing beats on the fly. He has performed over 180 live PA’s covering Australia, USA, Asia, Europe and beyond, and continues to venture into unchartered territory to represent his sound. It’s been 4 years since the Arctic Foundations album and a decade has passed by for the fans of the Virtual Virtuosos LP so It’s about time Alaska delivered the third chapter to complete the ambient-jungle trilogy. Alaska has been living in sub-zero temperatures whilst programming the album, and the frostbite’s reflected in every avenue of the LP. The album features pure ambient-jungle, Sample Me drum patterns for producers to sample, downtempo drum and bass and the debut ambient collaboration of Alaska & Robert Manos plus famous trance siren Kirsty Hawkshaw returns for two numbers on the LP. Arctic Music has raised the bar to deliver unique formats for analogue and digital lovers alike, with stunning and beautiful Triple Snow-White Vinyl and Solid-Black Compact Disc packages. Both 12” vinyl and compact disc versions offer material exclusive to each format, and all solid-black disc versions feature extended mix’s taking the album a step further.

FILM031 Soul On Fire – Big Bud Soundtrax 12″ Vinyl
Big Bud is back with his first release since his recent LP “Connections”, his last single featured the hugely successful “White Widow”, this single follows on from that vibe, slick guitar licks, rolling bass lines and a distinctly psychedelic and dreamlike atmosphere are present throughout, Big Bud is carving his own sound as always, long may it continue.

RECIPE007 Transfer / Block 305 – Skeptical Ingredients Records 12″ Vinyl
(EACH COPY COMES WITH A FREE RECIPE CARD FROM THE ARTIST)
After the success of Phobia’s giant 12’ on Ingredients (and killer Beef stew) the next instalment comes from an up & coming artist making waves in 2010. Ashley ‘Skeptical’ takes a step towards the deep, dubby vibes of underground Drum & Bass, harking back to oldskool Metalheadz with “Transfer” a bassline roller. Flip for ‘Block 305’ for some half-time mechanical minimalism, with it’s barrage of bass pinning you against the wall. With production like this you know this guy has plenty more to come, and this is the first of 3 12”s signed to the label. You’ve been warned! Skeptical comes correct with his steak dish!
REDSEAL005 Judgement Day EP – Calibre Samurai Red Seal 12″ Vinyl x 2
Black Vinyl edition. In a coup of epic proportions, New Zealand imprint Samurai Red Seal has managed to obtain 4 exclusive tracks from the prolific musical genius that is Ireland’s Dominick Martin aka Calibre. In 2009 the third release on Red Seal was a 12” single from Calibre – ‘Ringtone’/’Jackoff’ (REDSEAL003) which was a massive success with DJs from around the globe. There was only one thing we could think of to follow that up, and that was twice the amount of music. As Calibre’s legions of followers will attest the man has endless styles and the ‘Judgement Day’ EP attempts to capture a different approach with each tune. The title tune ‘Judgement Day’ features the sultry but potent vocals of Samurai Music’s favourite MC/Vocalist DRS, on what can best be described as a stone groove. The vibe gets jagged on the awkward funk of ‘Trust’, a tune that seemingly wriggles it’s rhythm at you! ‘Don’t Want Your Love’ is a tour de force of soulful Drum and Bass, with every element combining into a soaring, rolling groove. Described by fans as possibly Calibre’s most powerfully emotive tune to date, we advise staying away from this tune during hangovers or relationship break ups. And finally, a proud dancefloor steam-train with a buzz saw reese, ‘Jungle One’ has been floating around in the sets of a chosen few for some time now and finally sees a full release. DJ support on this release has been unanimous, with the likes of Marcus Intalex, DJ Hype, LTJ Bukem, dBridge, DJ Friction, Doc Scott, London Elekricity, Spectrasoul, Cyantific, Nu Tone, Commix, Logistics, Lenzman, Jubei and many more!
SUICIDE050 Matchstick / Bionic Fingers – Nymfo Commercial Suicide 12″ Vinyl
Limited Orange Vinyl pressing. Klute has been working closely with Nymfo to get the best record he can out of him. Klute believe this is the best material he’s made to date. A superb 12″ that kicks of with ‘Matchstick’, one of the best best booty-shaking sci-fi tune you will hear in a long time. Some are calling this track the new Disco Dodo!! NZ012 Be Strong / Point Pleasant – Soul Intent Samurai Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Returning sharply to the dancefloor, Nottinghams Soul Intent graces Samurai Music with another 2 potent riddims. ‘Be Strong’ issues a very timely bit of advice in the vocal department while jagged breaks funk their way into a bass drop that Dillinja would be proud of. The defining feature of the tune however comes midway thru the main section with a rollicking bongo section. This tune seems to have an immortal life on the dancefloor with ‘classic’ written all over it. ‘Point Pleasant’ once again opens with Mr Judd’s unique reworking of a classic break before dropping into a deep bassline groove that seems to forge classic Full Cycle with some of Reinforced’s mid 90′s flava’s. Featured on the recent ‘Drum and Bass’ Anthems Mix Cd compiled by Hospital Records.. Big DJ support on these 2 from Klute, Doc Scott, State Of Mind, Eveson, Crissy Criss, Kool FM, Mistajam & Radio 1′s Huw Stephens.
NONPLUS007 Ochre / Cascade Failure – Vaccine Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus 007 sees the Californian based producer Vaccine make her debut on the label with a brace of tracks in her signature style of rich musical textures and ingenious drum arrangements. With a wealth of releases on labels such as Hotflush and Tempa, its safe to say that quality control has never been an issue for her and this release is no exception.
a) Vaccine ‘Ochre’ – The a-side ‘Ochre’ with its scratchy lo-fi beats and rugged gliding bassline is textbook Vaccine. An abstract looping vocal brings an almost soulful edge to the track but it still remains tense and gritty throughout. Doing damage in clubs across the world but just as relevant at home, this track will stay in your playlist for the long haul.
aa) Vaccine ‘Cascade failure’ – Slightly mellower than the a-side but on more of an emotive tip, this track plays with orchestral “Burialesque” chords and melodies and really makes you get your thinking cap on. Once again her trademark lo-fi beats and percussion swirl around in seemingly effortless complex patterns, with layer upon layer of chords and melodies the track has so much depth its almost impossible to take it all in with just one listen.

SUBTITLESUK002 2098 / Yogurt Brainwave – Ulterior Motive Subtitles Music (UK) 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Ulterior Motive take you back to the future with ‘2098’, recalling pre- millennial tension with sci-fi atmospherics, genetically modified breaks and a bionic bassline straight out of the golden era of drum & bass. DJ support from the likes of Noisia, Ed Rush & Optical, Alix Perez, Jubei, Total Science, Commix and Break proves they’re doing it right. ‘Yoghurt Brainwave’ sees the UM boys swapping their trademark synths for full-fat funk bass and hinting there’s a heck of a lot more in their locker.
What the DJ’s are saying:
Ed Rush “Gonna be playing 2098 for an age, doing serious damage worldwide. More tunes like this please!”
dBridge “I wondered how long it would be for someone to come along and re-ignite the flame left to fade by others”
Finish copy. Those of you who’ve been around for a while will remember D.Kay & Rawfulls Illkillz alias. Their early tunes married cheeky trance riffs with grimy drum & bass sensibilities to devastating effect. 2010 sees them gear up for an album release and what better way to do that then by updating their sound for a deep and dark feel? Hospital Records’ Logistics comes along for the ride on Gridline a riotous effort that brings together immense techno sounds with grizzled bass notes and rolling drums. ‘They Could Love’ on the AA keeps things deep and dark, but delves even further into esoteric territory. We can’t wait for the album. (Words ATM Magazine May /June 2010).

Wetting the appetite for the forthcoming ‘Puppets’ album, Aquatic Lab dish up two varied future bass experiments from Truth. First up ‘Burglar’ a tech-stepping original production bedded with sharp snapping drums & snares that bite straight through the rave atmospherics. Bass wise this piece of kit is extreme to say the least, signature bulbous sub action. ‘Dead Silence’ comes from a charged half step angle with complex percussion. The track features a glossy synth line. At it’s core it evolves to unleash deadly licks of bass at opportune moments. Both cuts are a prime pick for the steppers. Getting huge support from Mala, Skream, N-type, Hatcha and Joe Nice.

SENSELESS012 Zombiezz EP – Kanji Kinetic Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Senseless have always believed that the spirit of rave never died, it’s everywhere, but now in 2010 we’ve discovered that spirit distilled into its purest form, let’s call it essence of rave. Kanji Kinetic makes it, a monstrous hybrid of electro, bassline, jungle and, yes, rave. It doesn’t just deny classification, it smashes it to pieces. These tracks look backwards but sound like the future, they’re cheeky but deadly serious, they’re rough and smooth, sharp and blunt, sweet and sour, bouncy, wonky, hyper and just a little bit insane. In short, the ultimate party music. The EP is a game of two halves, easing you in at 140 BPM with a wonky mixture of futurebassline and pitch bent synths (ToyGuns) then rolling into the monstrous Scientist. Reach-for-the-lazers rave stabs and scorching bass collide to make something seriously dangerous. We then take a quick diversion for a remix from Kaiser, a newcomer with releases coming on Starkey’s Slit Jockey, who twists Toy Guns into a devastating mix of grime, 8bit bleeps and UK Funky syncopation, this is what it sounds like to be one of those ghosts being eaten by Pacman. Next up we turn up the pace for ‘New Era’, weighing in at 175 BPM, it’s the fastest thing we’ve ever released but its half time weight makes it feel like jungle chopped and screwed in the fifth dimension. Quite simply it has the biggest drop you will hear this year, possibly ever. It’s jungle tempo but drop this in a dubstep set and watch the floor ignite. The title track, Zombiezz also rocks 175 BPM on the half time but does it 4×4, cheeky cartoon samples and strings building to another seismic sub frequency workout. Finally Zombiezz gets two remixes, Cracks turn in something pretty special, taking things back down to 140 and turn in a mix they’re calling ‘Horror House’, a visceral mixture of techno, grime and lots of bass. Then just for fun we asked legendary hardtek producer 9MM to see if he could make Zombiezz a little harder, and he did. Enjoy! NB New Era and Zombiezz are being released as a split with our good pals Tigerbeat6, thanks guys.
FRJ006 Angels Dub EP – Kuoyàh Frijsfo Beats 12″ Vinyl
Italy’s Marco Donnarumma indicated some of the potential of his Kuoyàh project with last April’s digital release for Frijsfo, earning enthusiastic tips from the likes of Boomkat. Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that his debut on wax ups the game – even in the face of a mix from Sully – by applying a focus capable of working magic in 2010′s open-ended dubstep dance. It’s an overused comparison that probably deserves to be buried, but Angel Dub does reek of Horsepower Productions, or more precisely the ducking 2-step and Basic Channel steals of Benny Ill’s classic Tempa EP with Hatcha. In this case laziness has been avoided, a sunstroked, hazy quality making it sound Kuoyàh’s own, and a judicious electronica dimension expanding the arrangement without falling into the IDM-ish trap of trying to ape something cleverer. That holds true even for the more downtempo Asia, which turns up the dub channel to find hordes of space-echo revenants chasing around. The thoroughly dust-less grooves of common soundsystem samples are absent, though, dropped for an unexpected reversioning of Artificial Intelligence bleep tones. On Soldiers, Donnarumma’s background in electroacoustic music and ambient is more obvious, in common with Chase The Comedown, 2009′s digital EP. It’s equally clear how he’s been sharpening this kind of line since then, refining trademark, half-dismantled bundles of beats to the point where everything is in just the right wrong place. Attention for this EP will understandably bend towards Sully’s Angels Dub remix, not without justification. It’s another great Jack Stevens beat, with pummelling sub-bass, arpeggios scrambled almost in the style of Zomby and an uncharacteristically martial drum track beating out something like an Addison Groove juke pattern. Kuoyàh himself, though, deserves just as much of your time on this one, trust us.

HENCH017 1986 Was The Future – Mensah Hench 12″ Vinyl
Visit Bristol and mention the name Mensah; chances are that someone’s going to know the man we’re talking about. Having become involved in the Bristol music scene at an early age, there’s no surprise that his productions epitomize the things associated with the city’s music – positivity and progressiveness. Having already lent the bouncy number, Pulse 80’s, to the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, and getting voted in the as one of the ‘Top 10 Producers to watch’ in the Dubstep Forum Awards, Mensah provides us with yet more reason to mark him down as one to keep an eye on in the future. The Untitled Future Funk EP is a 6 track release that provides a true insight into the depth of studio-skills this young artist has developed, touching on both the atmospheric and downright funky sides of dubstep. Already having had a track placed on the CSI TV series (Stapleton Rd) and with all tracks receiving regular play from the scene’s big hitters, we’re excited to present this stunning effort from Mensah.
A. 1986 WAS THE FUTURE – The synth-led chords from the outset of this tune frame it as a future classic of dubstep. Not holding back when the bassline drops, Mensah has crafted a sound that delivers a punch. A truly gripping production that keeps you locked, seeming to introduce new sounds and phrases whilst maintaining its esoteric feel. ‘1986 Was The Future’ is going to be one of those tunes that’ll have the dancefloor screaming for rewind after rewind – and we’re sorry, but you’re going to be obliged to give it to them! Currently being rinsed by the likes of Plastician, Starkey and L-Vis.
AA1. ACID DUB – On a slightly different tip, Mensah hits us with something a little more accustomed to the HENCH imprint’s sound. Commencing with that familiar steppy vocal, the background interference builds into a seemingly mechanical drop – lifting and taking all with it. A truly funky production that guarantees to turn the party to a full-on warzone when that bassline drops – no wonder the likes of Skream, Bok Bok and Baobinga have been smashing this one.
AA1. UNTITLED FUTURE FUNK – Guiding us in with tripped-out synths and a gentle kick-drum, this one drops subtly. ‘Untitled Future Funk’ is a wonderfully unique production that sits perfectly as an end-of night tune that is as progressive as it is moody. The track develops introducing extra synth to compliment that jagged kick-drum bassline. This track says more about Mensah’s production style than any of his previous releases; daring, innovative and effortlessly funky. Support from Mistajam, Joker, Plastician, Noah D, Von D and more.

Worth its weight in gold, and as intended each of the four tracks are deployed as weapons of the DJ’s arsonal amongst their crates. 4 tracks that are sure fire hits. The predetermined target aimed to the dance with the sight set to annilate the crowd. Thick basslines, dope beats, and smashing drums set the pace in this artistic approach of a surreal instinctual bass killer.
PL009 Interpretazioni EP – The Subdivision Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl
The SubDivision round up some of some of dubstep’s heaviest and dirtiest mercenaries for the latest Paradise Lost offering of 4 remixes on the Interpretazioni EP. Roguestar starts things off with what can only be considered an epic remix of an already epic track, Devil’s Kiss. Full throttle from the start and straddling the line between dubstep and breakstep, this track will appeal to anyone needing to destroy the floor at 3AM. Lonewolf goes dirt for his remix of The Messenger, bringing the heat with his notorious filthy style, incorporating heavy synths with nasty breaks. On the flip, Djunya takes things to the dark side of dub, with his re-take on the bizzarely spacey Elephant Walk. Currently a favorite of DJs pushing the deeper sounds, Djunya brings in heavy reverbs, 8-bit stabs, and his trademark bassline business to produce a brilliant and complex sound. Vesicle round off the release with what might be their heaviest production yet on the remix of The Rose. Junglist vibes and bass terrorism combine to produce devastating material showing off the impressive skills of these up-and-comers from Finland. With something for everyone on this release, Paradise Lost is going from strength to strength.

PIPS012 Untitled / Digest – Joe Apple Pips 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. With the success of our last releases getting props and plays from DJs as diverse as Erol Alkan, DJ T, Martyn, Deetron, & Rob Da Bank we are really excited to present our next slice of futuristic funk for your ears and booty from the extremely talented Joe. With his debut, the awesome ‘Grimelight’, being released on Hessle Audio, Joe is part of a loose group of likeminded and future thinking producers & DJs that includes Hessle Audio’s Ramadanman, Ben UFO, & Pangaea, and Untold & James Blake. Whilst they all have very individual sounds, they share a vision of dubstep, uk funky, techno & house influenced beats that seem to defy genre. The A-side ‘Untitled’ is a huge stepping wad of funk, bringing to mind 2-step, early Skream & Benga, even stripped down grime classics like Pulse X, but with a truly contemporary twist. This tune drops hard, and has been a secret weapon of Appleblim’s for some time now – he was pleasantly surprised to see ravers of all ages go mad to it! The flip sees Joe’s more experimental leanings come out on ‘Digest’, but he never forgets the groove and funk. With rolling percussion, steppy sub bass and shiny analogue synth stabs cutting through, it seems to us like a mixture of Mala from Digital Mystikz and Theo Parrish! High praise indeed…
DJ/Radio support coming from Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 1), Modeselektor, Peverelist, Rob Da Bank (Radio 1/Bestival), Paul Woolford, Ramadanman, Brackles, Appleblim & many more.

To celebrate the 4th Robots release, we locked Martin Kemp in a small room and told him to make a club smasher like Citizens Dub <http://www.myspace.com/bluntedrobots> A week later, we let him out, only to find he’d spent his time making more weird House mutations and sampling tribal men.
DP038 Badman Sound / SlowDown – Doctor P / Trolley Snatcha Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Dub Police continue to release some of the scenes most in demand tunes and this single is no exception. The man of the minute Doctor P steps up with a serious club banger in the shape of ‘Badman Sound’, which has gained huge support from the likes of Caspa, N-Type, Skream, The Others & many more of the scenes big hitters. Squelching bass, tonk beats and a serious catchy lead that you will be singing for days after; all combined to make this one massive track! The flip side doesn’t take any prisoners either, but this time it’s the turn of the man who spends way too much time hanging around outside supermarkets; Trolley Snatcha. Featured on the Scion A/V & Dub Police CD, ‘Slow Down’ will already be well known by a lot of you eager dubhunters out there with it’s relentless basslines, stomping beats and cheeky Middle Eastern melodies. All in all this is a single you can’t afford to pass on – an essential slab of plastic from Dub Police once again

DVA005 New World Order – DVA DVA Music 12″ Vinyl
The latest releases from a Producer famous for his persistent abuse of 4×4 convention, Scratcha DVA presents the New World Order EP on his own DVA Music imprint. Showcasing 4 tracks from a range of Producers the EP opens with a pair of brand new Scratcha DVA productions. The title tracks bomb shelter rave dynamics combine spiraling synths, warm organ stabs and heaving bass tones to apocalyptic effect while its companion ‘Schizophrenic’ lives up to its name, alternating a floor filling 8 bit 2 tone skank with churning Grime synths at their most sour. The flipside offers up Roska ally Uncle Bakongo’s brutally stripped down take on Soule Power’s= ‘Lost’, pairing industrial strength drums with decaying vocal snippets and brooding keys before a last minute change of pace resolves the vocal tension. S.Chu’s rounds out the EP with a reworking of his ‘Quickfoot’, fully equipped with a slow burn bass line and shimmering synth arpeggios. Please no sharing. Feel free to get in touch for more info.

SENSELESS013 Zarbak – Pacheko & Pocz Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The phrase ‘tropical’ is currently getting used to describe a lot of different music; some good, some bad, some ugly. To save on confusion Senseless went out and travelled the world to find some music from the actual tropics, Venezuela to be precise. Somewhere buried deep in the mysterious rainforest, or possibly just in a studio in Caracas, they found Pocz and Pacheko. It’s so near the equator maybe we can ditch the ‘tropical bass’ tag and go for something new, ‘equatorial bass’ perhaps? Maybe not. Pacheko, Francisco Mejia, will be familiar to some for his solo releases on Lo Dubs, Murder Channel, Seclusiasis and for his work with legendary Venezualan expat Cardopusher. His partner in bass Pocz (Carlos Majoral) is a classically trained musician and production engineer. Along with a select few others they run Abstractor, a collective of producers, artists and designers, who promote parties, run a blog and do a fine job of representing bass music in Venezuela pretty much solo. The collective includes graphic artist Design or Die who is responsible for the incredible artwork and pretty special video for ‘Zarbak’. Together by day Pocz and Pacheko run a sound design studio in the rum fuelled pressure cooker of political and social unrest that is Caracas. Their training in high-end audio engineering is evident in the quality and weight of the production. Nights are spent in the tropical heat cooking up beats. Over the years an audio diet that includes salsa, merengue, reggaeton and other local music mixed with old jungle tapes, Rinse FM sets and lots of dub has helped them to build a unique and captivating sound that combines all those things.
The spirit of hardcore, jungle and garage from the UK are all evident from the UK Funky rhythms and rumbling sub bass in ‘Zarbak’ to the melancholy melodic refrains of ‘Dorado’ but there’s something else there too. There’s something tribal in the drums that taps into a deep history of Latin American percussive rhythms and adds a dimension that is clearly their own. If UK bass is about the energy and pressure of the city at night then Caracas bass about the point where the intensity of the city meets the wide open space of the jungle, the beach and the mountains under a carpet of stars. Put the needle on the record, close your eyes and imagine it. Also, there’s remixes from Brackles (Blunted Robots/Planet Mu) and Mr Gasparov (Soul Jazz).

RED039 Defsteppah EP – Deformer Redrum Recordz 12″ Vinyl
Deformer hailing from Rotterdam city, The Netherlands, is a strong player amongst the progressive electronic music scene for years already and are about to release a new 3 track e.p. entitled ‘Defsteppah’. Where Deformer normally sets the tone with innovative Jungle or quality Breakcore, they now give new direction to the Dubstep genre in their own onorthodox way. The Defsteppah E.P.
Kicks off with the title track and a roots Reggae atmosphere soon turns into a vicious bass driven stepper with angry, yet conscious lyrics of Mike Redman and Scapu Lox on top. The second track ‘Damien Dub’ already found it’s way to the underground club audience and is becoming a party favorite. A twisted rave line holds together a complicated drum pattern while a foundation of solid bass slowly mangles your hearing bone. ‘Extreme Deformity’, the third track on this e.p. is a quite original track which fuses the typical Rotterdam Hardcore sound with deep Dubstep. From the one into another in just a matter of minutes. Not for softies… The Defsteppah e.p. is a limited edition release and has an incredible lasered picture pattern on the B side of the disc. It will not be repressed.

For the third instalment of the OpenEarz journey through the full spectrum of dubstep sounds, Dom Hz supplies a diverse 3 track EP showcasing his technically gifted production and representing his broad music tastes. Mist opens the EP with warm pads and enchanting atmospherics. The intro sets the pace, but doesn’t prepare you for the plunging drop and sub bass pressure! This is a high calibre skanker with a weightline ready to test any system! Easing nicely into the flipside Dom constructs infectious jazz melodies and lounge vibes for Elevator Skank, bringing through influences from house, jungle and dub to create a warm roller, definitely a summer vibes track!
TRIPS002 Black Eye – Silent Witness Triple Seed 12″ Vinyl
The new label from Silent Witness returns. A devoted follower of techno-influenced drum & bass, Silent Witness adds a new edge & attitude, combining elements of the deep & uplifting within his tear-out dance floor productions. Over the next five years releases on Metalheadz, Commercial Suicide, Quarantine, Violence, DSCi4, Critical and DNAudio; the label he established with Squire in 2003; alongside collaborations with Break, Klute, Fierce, Hive, Gridlok, D-Bridge, Survival and Ercola and remixes for the likes of Bloc Party have established Silent Witness as a musical tour de force and lead to DJ bookings across the globe. Not content with the constrictions of working at the whirly BPM’s of drum & bass, Silent Witness has also branched out into house music, joining forces with Dropkick to establish the M3 Project whose debut ‘A Better Man’ EP is available on Silicone Soul’s Darkroom Dubs. He also continues to embrace his passion as a guitarist, playing on many of his own productions.

DARKESTRALEX001 One Man Jettison/Boundary Part 1 (Afterthought) // Decorum – Sabre Darkestral Excursions 12″ Vinyl
LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

LB005 All Ends EP – Limewax & Current Value L B Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2
Triple Vision proudly welcomes L B Recordings to the drum’n bass roster. Limewax is the man behind this label. This young man has been releasing tunes under Dylan and Tech Itch’s wing since 06 and they both have been hammering his releases over and over. You will probably never hear a set of these guys without at least 3 Limewax tunes in it. After a series of serious 12″ he released his greatly anticipated ‘Scars on the horizon’ album on Technical Freak. Things just got messier from that and nowadays mister Limewax is touring the world with his razor sharp beats, strange offbeat like rhythm patterns and ghastly soundscapes. For this brand new double pack EP Limewax teams up with German Angstgegner Current Value. Current Value has been releasing his particular drum’n bass since the late 90ties on labels like Position Chrome and is now seen as one of the pioneers of this hard drum’n bass style. 2012, the day of Silence is the name of his new album and is due to be released any day now. One thing is for sure: this EP is not for the faintharted. Make sure to tighten your seatbelts, say goodbye to you dear ones and let the music take you to new dimensions.

CRIT042 Late Drop – Break Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. 2009 has been a good year for Critical, having built yet further on its reputation as being one of the most forward-thinking underground drum and bass labels in the scene. Appearances from Spectrasoul, Sabre, Serum & Vapour paved the way for the heavily acclaimed Critical Sound compilation that saw label boss Kasra representing the ‘Future of D&B’ at Fabric’s 10th birthday and even guesting on BBC Radio 1. Now just in time for Christmas Critical serve up one last delicious 12” before the new year from the mighty Break. Smooth’s the word as ‘Late Drop’ gets under way with lazy-day pads and a light stepping break that runs through the DJ-friendly intro all the way to the breakdown. Wait for the typically gnarly Breakbass though and then it’s throttle down, away we go on this late night tech-roller that oozes class and sees Critical’s eyes set firmly on the dance floor once again. ‘Crunchy’ kicks off with some interesting orchestration and a simple stepping break that flowsunderneath jungle samples and a distant vocal. It’s all about the distorted b-line though as Break doeswhat he does best letting it worm its way into your psyche. No-nonsense D&B to move your feet. DJ support from Friction, Break, Cyantific, Spectrasoul, Marky, Nu Tone, Logistics and Kasra amongst others.

Christina Nicola has the vocal that goes: the hours, the minutes, the seconds, the frames play like…etc. and has featured in the sets of Marcus intalex, D Bridge, Doc Scott. Survival & Christina Nicola.. Stand up and take a bow, that is an outstanding piece of cutting edge D&B

FFLP1-1 The Cocoon – Chook Full Force Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. The Cocoon is the culmination of half a decade’s worth of hard work. Starting out in 2004, Chook launched Full Force Recordings as an output for the fierce and disturbing side of European techno influenced drum & bass. The label garnered support right from the off with DJs as diverse as Roni Size, J Majik and Calyx & Teebee all queuing up to work Full Force’s releases into their sets. Chook, alongside friends such as Germany’s Phace (Subtitles), New Zealand’s State of Mind (Shogun Audio) and USA’s Mayhem (Ram Records) put the label firmly on the map with tracks from some of the world’s finest breakbeat artists, keeping the music policy as credible, long-lasting D&B. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook delves deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Some might consider that a lost art in drum & bass these days.

Soothsayer emerges from a brief slumber With SS014 Gremlinz feat. Aspect ‘The Gavel’ b/w Theory – ‘Silent Witness’. Renegade Hardware, Metalheadz veteran Gremlinz serves up a massive slab of horseman stylee amen madness in the form of ‘The Gavel’. After honing his skills for a barrage of labels like Xtinction Agenda, Horizons, and Outsider, Gremlinz and coconspiritor Aspect have exorcised their inner demons with ‘The Gavel’ with each stab thereby bludgeoning truth and justice into the ears of all listeners. Hard, dark jungle for the roughnecks!! Theory came to prominence with several key signings to prestigious labels like Digital’s Function and Vibez offshoot, 13 Music. In that time this Midlands boy has developed an outright punishing approach to heavy dubwize riddims. ‘Silent Witness’ delivers the riddim and bruise disgusting reece basslines, heavy tribal percussion, and enough low end to lower IQs for years to come! PSQ001 Small Hours – Asusu Project Squared 12″ Vinyl
A Techno and Dubstep label, formed mid 2009. Project Squared aims to release 12” vinyl and download projects that are dance floor focused, that test new ground and that have depth as well as impact. We release music that covers the space between Techno and Dubstep as well as music that stays more firmly within those two genres. Created as a sub-label of Project Mooncircle due to a change in taste from one of the co-ordinators of that label, we were amazed to find two artists (Asusu and Furesshu) that were not signed such was the quality of their music. Still in early stages, the label aims to keep releasing high quality dance music, to gather more artists and to change and evolve as styles change and evolve… Most importantly as our own tastes change and evolve. Project Squared is a sub-label of Project Mooncircle and is affiliated with HHV.de. The label is co-run by Paul Cooper and Gordon Gieseking. Artwork and design is by Gordon Gieseking. Asusu – Now a dubstep producer with his sound tied to the deeper side of things, Asusu has moved from roots in hip hop and trip hop through to garage, dubstep and dub techno. Recently he has received radio play from various DJ’s on Sub FM, Dubstep FM and Reload Radio, and DJ’s himself (dubstep, garage & techno) mainly in Bath and Bristol. His tracks have received accolades in Mixmag and ATM (L.V. and XI’s top ten charts). He currently holds a residency at Rocksteady, Bath’s first monthly dubstep night, and also regularly co-hosts a show on Sub.fm alongside Trigga.

HENCH012 Ironhide / Slaughtered – Lost Hench 12″ Vinyl
Born and bred in Croydon, 19-year old Justin Cantor, a.k.a Lost, is the latest addition to the acclaimed HENCH crew. Somewhat of a child prodigy, Justin started DJ-ing at an early age, and got his first set of decks aged 12. It was not long before Justin’s attention was caught by the burgeoning dubstep movement; inspired by the sounds of Skream and Digital Mystikz’s, he turned his hand to dubstep production early in 2008. Soon after, his debut release came out on Hatcha & N-Type’s ‘Croydon Dubheads’ EP. He recently was named alongside Emalkay and 16 Bit as one to watch in Radio 1xtra’s ‘Future Sound of Dubstep’. We’re proud to present Lost’s debut release on the Hench imprint and are sure that you’ll enjoy it.
A. IRONHIDE – Lost creates a seriously atmospheric mood from the start in Ironhide, building to a subtle drop of one mean reverbed wobbly bassline. A real creeper of a tune, the open hi-hat progresses throughout, giving way to a double time feel that’ll keep heads
nodding. This is one serious weapon for your bag!
AA. SLAUGHTERED – Flip over for another bass-led rhythm, from Lost. Pushing a different tone from the A side (yet no less menacing), ‘Slaughtered’ immediately surrounds you with its rolling filtered wobble. This is one futuristic sounding bass riff. An echoey drum loop helps create an ambience and suspense to this track. With such a distinct vibe, you’re guaranteed to have the crowd putting their screwface’s on when this gets dropped.
DJ Support for both tracks from: Hatcha, N-type, Jakes, Skream, Chef, Beezy, Shiverz, Darkside (Getdarker), Tubby (Newham Generals), Mista Jam (BBC 1Xtra)
These tracks from will feature in the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1 (Due early 2010). The compilation is to be mixed by Jakes and will feature unreleased tracks from Papa ‘ench too. The release will also contain VIP’s of Jakes, Komonazmuk, Chasing Shadows, Lost and Giant, aswell as providing a platform for debut releases on the label from Minus, Tek-one and Mensah.

DD0001 Digidesign (Om Unit’s Pop Lock Mix) – Joker Unknown 12″ Vinyl
Arguably one of the top ranking dubstep / bass music releases of the past 12 months, and undeniably one of the most widely loved and heavily played, Joker’s epic synth track ‘Digidesign’ now gets the rework treatment from Om Unit, ramping up the rhythms and hitting the hard-bap pedal with extra weight to create a wobbling headnodder fix with a touch of off-centre (un)balance. This remix has been doing the rounds since late summer with support from the likes of Mark Pritchard aka Harmonic 313, Plastician, Jamie Vex’d (Planet Mu/Hotflush), Alexander Nut (Rinse/Eglo), and Joker himself. Om Unit is a new production moniker of Jim “2tall” Coles, a London based DJ and producer who has been active in the hip hop and electronic scene for several years. Other forthcoming releases under the Om Unit name include a 7″ on All City and a 12″ on Plastician’s Terrorhythm label. Issued with the full blessing of Joker and Hyperdub, this one-sided white label pressing will only be in print for a limited period, so get your pre-order swerve on without delay.

HDB027 Hyperdub 5.5 EP – Mala / Cooly G HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
The fifth and final edition of the Hyperdub 5 12″ series, and it doesn’t dissapoint. Two of the highlight tracks from the Hyperdub 5 compilation, as before fresh material that hadn’t previously seen the light of day. Mala’s long sought-after ‘Level Nine’ at long last available on wax complete with its strangely moving bass reduction and melody makes for a killer A-side. It’s Cooly G’s ‘Weekend Fly’ that steals the show on this one. Constructed of stripped down effects and awkwardly timed drums it’s quirkiness works it into a uncomfortabley-bizarre masterpiece. A definite 12″ for the collection.

Finish copy. Punch Drunk launches into 2010 with colourful cuts to beat the freeze in the form of two hot collaborations from Hyetal & Shortstuff. The hyper synth frenzy of Don’t Sleep and the technicolour visions of Ice Cream have been heavily rotated by Jackmaster, Brackles, Untold, Gemmy, Ben UFO, 2562, Oneman, Starkey amongst others.A flurry of releases in 2009 put Hyetal at the centre of a Bristol second wave of producers. Having caught the ear of Mary Anne Hobbs and subsequently appearing on her Planet Mu compilation ‘Wild Angels’, Hyetal has also seen releases for Bristollian labels Reduction and Soul Motive, and also for Texas based Formant Recordings. Releases on Planet Mu, Ramp Recordings, Berkane Sol and Pollen throughout 2009 have seen Shortstuff assert himself as a key mover in the new wave of grime, garage, funky and hip hop influenced beats and basslines infiltrating the UK underground. Shared roots in the forward thinking Nottingham Futureproof and Wigflex scenes, Shortstuff has recently launched his own imprint, Blunted Robots, alongside Brackles.
Finish copy. Both tracks REMASTERED and cut LOUD to 12” heavyweight vinyl for the first time.Pure fire to kick off 2010 from Punch Drunk sister label Unearthed, reissuing Bristol Sound System classics of yesteryear. Rob Smith & Ray Mighty are well documented as the Godfathers of the Bristol music scene, from producing Massive Attack’s debut 12″, Fresh Four’s classic ‘Wishing on a Star’, being instrumental in the birth of Bristol Jungle and being world respected recording artists in their own right. More recently Rob Smith in his RSD guise is back in the international frame with dubstep releases on labels such as Tectonic, Earwax and Punch Drunk culminating in a CD compilation ‘Good Energy’ on Punch Drunk in 2009. This new Unearthed 12″ features two unmissable and in demand original Bristol 2 step garage anthems from 2002. ‘this ere one design a lick yuh flat pon yuh back’

SENSELESS011 You Know – Ghosttown ft Badness & Dajla Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Wonky dancefloor dancehall from Ghosttown featuring Badness, mix from DZ, Like his spectral namesake Simon Booth aka Ghosttown has spent the last few years obscured, half out of sight as a producer hiring out his futuristic beat-science to a string of heavy hitting MCs including Foreign Beggars here in the UK and a clutch of artists across the Atlantic including Guilty Simpson, Oh No, Frank and Dank and Dudley Perkins from the Dilla/Stones Throw axis of the hip hop spectrum.
His debut release started life like most of his productions, on a beat tape with another 80 or so one minute tracks, all vital snapshots charged with the excitement of what might happen with the right MC but there was something special about the original ‘Greezy’. It wires up squelching formant synths to insistent, minimal drums sounding like a 2010 UK-bass update to Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ but at 145 BPM with speaker damaging sub.
This devastating but unusual collision of sounds needed a versatile MC and Badness was top of the list. Known for his early work with Lava Unit and Terror Danjah as well as last year’s carnival smash ‘Message is Love’ with Jammer and Silverlink Birmingham born Badness’ star is on the rise. ‘You Know’ as the track became features his signature double time bashment/grime flow and a killer hook sung by cosmic-soul powerhouse Dajla. The Parisian born singer is a Radio Nova favourite who has collaborated with Wax Tailor, Foreign Beggars and celebrated hip hop poet Anthony Joseph. The resulting track is unmistakably UK but with a bashment flavour, wonky dancehall? The vinyl remix comes from DZ (Hot Flush/Tru Tiger) who delivers a mix that turbo charges the dancefloor elements of the track to come up with multi coloured low end work out. Senseless will release a Ghosttown album in summer 2010 featuring vocalists including Frank & Dank, Olivier Daysoul, Badness, YT, Navigator, Killa P and more. 2010 is the year the Ghost
comes to life.
Finish copy. Two of the hottest producers at the moment have to be Datsik and Excision and when they get together they make some of the most innovative sounding music. Think of the type of music played at an acid filled Transformers rave and you might have some sort of idea what it may sound like. BOKA024PT1 Chainsaw Calligraphy Remixes (Part 1) – 16bit Boka Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy Promo’s in Full artwork disco sleeve. The long awaited 16bit – ‘Chainsaw Calligraphy’ remixes are upon us, this is Part 1 of 2 featuring the JAKES and PROPATINGZ mixes.
JAKES, the founding member of the HENCH crew was an obvious target to carry out the Chainsaw remix, being a big fan of the original and regularly rinsing the track out in the raves, he’s given the track the signature Jakes sound, psychedelic bass-lines and heavyweight percussion, watch out for the sample too, see if you recognise it. Heavy support coming from N-TYPE (Rinse FM), MISTAJAM (Radio1), WALSH, TRUTH, MARLOW and HATCHA (Kiss FM).
UK born but now living in LA PROPATINGZ has his musical history in the Breaks scene, a long purveyor of the sound and a regular on the live scene he has more recently switched his style and has been directly influenced by 16bit’s sound. He has big releases lined up and is beginning to cause quite a stir with his tracks featuring on Radio 1 etc…..def one to look out for. His remix was written over the course of a year, alot of blood sweat and tears have gone into it, and the listener will realise this when he/she hears it, devastating,
pure and simple. Support coming from OOAH and the GLITCH MOB crew, AKIRA KITESHI and N-TYPE (Rinse FM).
KANJI KINETIC has been a purveyor of twisting violent bass music for a while now, since his release on Rag and Bone he has gone from strength to strength. His Chainsaw remix has been well received and he has completely reinvented and reinvigorated the original version, massive buzz building around this mix on the internet at the moment with support from KID606, AKIRA KITESHI, 16BIT, SQUIRE OF GOTHOS, CARDOPUSHER, RAFFERTIE, DROP THE LIME, MARY ANNE HOBBS (Radio1), SI BEGG & STARKEY.

RAMP007 Yes, Yes Suite 3 – Kankick Ft. Miki Vale Ramp Recordings 7″ Vinyl
Way back through the mists of time West Coast leftfield beats were the staple of a young Ramp Recordings. Here, wonky originator Kankick breaks out the SP1200 and delves into the crates knocking out a dusty banger with militant vocals from 6Ft Amazonian warrior Miki Vale. This is super limited end of run find.

RAMP009 Sagala (CD LP) – Pattie Blingh and the Akebulan 5 (Georgia Anne Muldrow) Ramp Recordings CD
Back in 2007, RAMP Recordings issued “Sagala” by Pattie Blingh & The Akebulan Five, which later spawned the 2562/Samiyam remix 10”. Pattie Blingh is Stones Throw & Ubiquity recording artist Georgia Anne Muldrow at her rawest and most creative, and after years of being out of press, we are pleased to press “Sagala” into your sweaty palm once again. Abrupt endings and loose timing give “Sagala” a truly unique sound, with an unrefined approach to rhythm smacking of a young RZA, while instrumental textures can recall anything from Funkadelic to The Cult, and the roll-jump-roll flow of her modes and moods is in the same addictive bracket as the best of Dilla, Madlib, and MF Doom., except they can’t even dream of competing on vocals. Her matchless delivery effortlessly pitches angrily-spat versification alongside angelic harmonic layers, with a lyrical content that marries late 60s English psychedelia to a stream of ebonic consciousness drawn from the same source as Marvin Gaye and Public Enemy.

RAMP026 Bare Feet – Maxmillion Dunbar Ramp Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Maryland resident MAXMILLION DUNBAR caught our attention on a desperately limited 7” last year on his own Future Times imprint. Swerving the current contrived reference points, B-Boy Max forges his own path mixing a kaleidoscope of boogie, electro, hip hop & analog soul. Max’s first EP for RAMP starts with Bare Feet clipping sparse soul loops with epic flourishes, Loveloop/Socket Bonus marrying cascading synths and 808’s, Wouldn’t Matter chops up a relentless boogie loops and epic disco strings, and WAVS draws the EP to a close with 80’s beat boxes and ramshackle synth lines.

DEEP MEDi Musik since their inception have been at the forefront of the dubstep scene, run by Mala (Digital Mystikz) the output has been varied and solid. The recent debut album from Silkie “City Limits Volume 1″ on DEEP MEDi was a huge success (Vinyl repress available 09.11.09).
DEEP MEDi is proud to announce two new signings to the label – Harry Craze and V.I.V.E.K.

First up is Harry Craze part of the Anti Social Entertainment alongside Silkie, Quest, Mizz Beats, Jay Five and others. Fresh from his ‘French Knickers’ 12″ collaboration with Silkie on the Break the Habit label, Harry delivers two of his own productions ‘Wa6′ and ‘Thirty Six Hours’ to devastating effect, showcasing his unique production skills and bringing fresh forward thinking sounds to the label.

DJ MAG – Dubstep Single Of The Month
Harry Craze – Wa6 (Deep Medi)
“Some tunes really hit you in the soul receptors, and ‘Wa6′ by West Londoner and anti-socialite Harry Craze blows dust off the 45, and moistens the eyeballs. If J Dilla made dubstep, you’d get the same feeling; sweet strings bounce off mood-drenched synths and circulate the warmth. And whilst this won’t set the dancefloors alight, it will start a fire in the soul. The flip is great too, but you’d be forgiven for never listening to it“.

Next up the man named V.I.V.E.K., he was brought to DEEP MEDi’s attention by good friend and fellow Anti Social Entertainment member, Silkie. V.I.V.E.K.’s debut on the label executes two shocking outputs ‘Kulture’ and ‘Meditation Rock’ with which we think you’ll agree will set V.I.V.E.K’s name comfortably alongside the heavy hitting DEEP MEDi roster.
