New D&B Releases

EXITLP009 – Loxy & Resound – Burning Shadows – 12″ Vinyl x 3
London’s Loxy and Finland’s Resound have always been known for their ragga-tinged, hardhitting sound, where each beat slams through with an untouchable technical precision. The two producers have been combining forces for the last three years – including their 2009 anthem ‘Green Destiny / Storyboard’ (Digital Soundboy), remixes for Kryptic Minds, additions to Renegade Hardware compilations, last year’s ‘No Money – Deadly Venom/Driving Force’ (Def Recordings), and their contribution to Exit Records’ ‘Mosaic: Volume One’ (‘Vertigo’) earlier this year. But the duo’s long-awaited debut long player marks their first collaboration that has absolutely no boundaries: as experimental and creative as it gets. True to form, as most Exit Records releases go, ‘Burning Shadows’ sees both producers finding their stride, and treading into surprising new sonic territories from a few different directions. Taking the energy and force of early tech-heavy Drum & Bass, Loxy & Resound bring the genre into a sound that’s uniquely their own.

a Loxy & Resound – Depth Excess
b Loxy & Resound – Fall
c Loxy & Resound – Conquerer X
d Loxy & Resound – Inversion
e Loxy & Resound – Thin Ice
f Loxy & Resound – Conscious

New D&B Promos

REDSEAL014 – ASC – Droids / Never Enough – 12″ Vinyl
Limited coloured vinyl: Solid blue, crystal clear & white mixed. Mutant cyber funk from the man behind Auxilliary, Symbol and one of the albums that has come to signify the Autonomic sound. ‘Droids’ follows ‘Brainscan’ perfectly. A muted power break jabs its way to the drop where it is joined by a writhing bassline, snippets of a classic break and signifying bleeps that mark this as the closest Drum and Bass can get to techno without a 4/4. The layers great techno music is known for are also taken care of here, with the power of every element wrung out to its true potential. ‘Never Enough’ is a drum workout of the highest order, with filters wrapping themselves around the twisting break edits, claps and steadying bassline. Vinyl buyers get an exclusive ambient piece …sshhhhhhh. DJ Support from dBridge, Loxy, Consequence, Synkro, Indigo, Presha and many more.

HORO002 – ASC – No Secrets / Zenith – 10″ Vinyl
Samurai vinyl only ‘Horo’ series Volume 2. Limited Multi Coloured vinyl 10″ – After the success of the last 2 ASC singles for Samurai Red Seal and the flood of quality music that was arriving in our inboxes from the man, it was inevitable it was time for another shot of this UK Born, California residents vision. The ‘Horo’ vinyl series appealed to ASC instantly being a man from a strong techno background and an avid vinyl collector himself. ‘No Secrets’ is one of those tunes that touches you deeply without you realising, echoing in your subconscious and drawing you back for repeat listens. ‘Zenith’ picks up where ‘Bleep Test’ left off, stuttering timeless breaks patched together with diving bass and percussive polishes to produce a unique sound that takes the past and hurls it into the future.

MODULE010 – June Miller – Snapcase – 10″ Vinyl
More primetime, hi-grade drum & bass from the ever on point Critical collective. Label boss Kasra uses his sixth sense once more to uncover these two gems for his Modulations imprint from Holland’s Bart van Dijk and Mark McCann aka June Miller. Once again standards are high, no room for error when Critical’s nearby! A rocksteady two-step break leads the way into ‘Snapcase’, one of the coolest slices of future flexing D&B yet seen on Modulations. It’s all about the drop into dry, tech-step territory that you can be sure smashes any dance floor with ease while the syncopated bass hook grabs and never lets go. File alongside Break and Phace. ‘Walls Of Jericho’ as the name suggests opens with an ominous cinematic soundscape of dark horns and panning percussion before some serious bass surges and panic-laden snares build to a killer climax. Huge off-kilter breaks and ingenious edits then carry it away into possibly the heaviest track yet to have seen a release on Modulations. A great way to kick off 2012.

NARRATIVES001 – Blocks & Escher – Sagan / Broken – 12″ Vinyl
Blocks and Escher have over the space of 2 years grown from being acclaimed newcomers and solo artists to establishing themselves as one of Drum and Bass’ most exciting and sought after production outfits. Their debut releases in 2009 found their way into the record bags of scene luminaries such as Fabio, Marcus Intalex, DJ Hype, Spectrasoul, and Alix Perez- as well as gaining attention outside of the genre for their emotive and progressive take on Drum and Bass with support from artists as varied as Rob Da Bank, Jazzanova, Mary Ann Hobbs and Laurent Garnier. Coming bang up to date, 2011 saw their music grace some of the biggest and most prestigious labels in bass music with releases dropping on Renegade Hardware, Horizons Music and arguably one of the most highly awaited singles of the year “Shadowplay” on Shy Fx’s huge Digital Soundboy imprint. Entering in to 2012, Blocks and Escher present their own label, Narratives Music. Formed primarily as an outlet for their own work alongside collaborations and remixes; the emphasis is on releasing music which encapsulates the atmosphere, emotion and excitement that made them fall in love with the genre in the 1990’s. The Narratives name itself, is derived from the imagery and stories felt and gathered from music; the way that a listener may cast their own interpretation and build their own subjective narrative. The three tracks on the debut release demand to be listened to in their entirety. Three journeys together, inscribing a balanced impression of the Narratives ‘sound’. DJ Support : Rockwell, D Bridge, Loxy, ASC, Doc Scott, Flight, Nerm (BBC Radio 6)

2NDRP12016 – Gerry Read / 23Hz & Numaestro – Roomland (Distal Remix) / Zumo (Sully Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Sometime you can’t keep a good remix down, and we certainly felt that with these two beastly versions by two very exciting producers of bass music. First up is an exciting producer 2nd Drop have been talkin to for over a year now, Atlanta’s Distal has been making a lot of noise across the bass scene with releases on Tectonic and ? Alongside putting a vast array of music on his own Embassy Label. Inspired by Gerry’s original, Distal has produced something truly brilliant. In stark contrast to the sublime Youandewan remix and Gerry Read’s killer original, Distal grabs the key elements and transforms them into an awesome juke workout. Drawing on an arsenal of stunning original features, this hyperkinetic version is bursting with character, energy and colour. On the flip, we welcome back Sully, who first saw wax on 2nd Drop with the anthemic Give Me Up in mid 2008. As a big fan of 23hz & Numaestro’s original, Sully asked to remix Zumo soon after it’s release in early 2009. Failed hardrives and a quiet 2010 for the label sadly meant this remix with its shifting syncopated beat patterns and moody El-B-esque swing, was sat on. Until now. Beautifully placed to carry on the Sully sound after his critically acclaimed album on Keysound in September, this long overdue remix now gets the release it deserves. Coincidently, the artist on both of the original releases was our mysterious Portugese illustrator and graffiti activist Uiu. So in the spirit of the release we asked him to remix both the original illustrations to create a new version for this release. The featured art ensued. Slightly bonkers, but amazing!

KNOWING LOOKS kicked off 2011 for WNCL Recordings with with his much loved, hard stepping ABANDONED SKIP, backed with the acclaimed symphonic masterpiece that was LAST KISS AT THE PLAINS HOTEL. Jason Hopfner is back again to neatly tie up a busy year at WNCL HQ, unveilling the classically constructed epic LISTEN TO MY 45 – described by BEN UFO as “lovely. gorgeous. slick. buff etc” …and who are we to disagree. Just do what it says on the tin, then flip over for GHOST BABY – yet another fine example from Hopfner’s rich and varied production cannon, melding super cool minimalism with party breaks. DB063 – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – 12″ Vinyl
I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. So peace to Dj Cra$y wherever you are and respect to BrEaCh for putting these together. best, VonStroke.

The young producer delivers three hypnotizing and genre bending tracks that expertly weave the sounds of Berghain, soulful house and UK garage into a single crushing package. The “Rooted” EP draws you in with the title track, bouncing along to an acid baseline, then moves onto “Drowning”, a moody techno track that was included on Scuba’s DJ-Kicks mix compilation, filled with drum and ambient samples taken from field recordings. Lastly, “Change”, a production that smartly melds classic house grooves with industrial techno, demonstrates Locked Groove’s rhythmic finesse and long-term promise as an artist.

PNTS002 – Magnum – All Over Me EP – 12″ Vinyl
After the widespread success of PNTS001 (Visionistʼs ʻMr. 67ʼ), the South London based imprint returns with another hard hitter in Magnumʼs ʻAll Over Me E.P.ʼ Fresh from recent moves on Nightshifters, Gradient Audio, Soukouch Ethnik and Inhale including a remix of Canblaster, the Puerto Rican producer has quickly built up much notoriety in his home country and is beginning to develop a following in the UK with numerous plays from Rinse FMʼs Scratcha DVA and Randomer. The title track of this latest excursion is as much a robust 808/909 dance floor mover as it is an all out, arms in the air, hairs on the back of your neck serotonin overload. Its winding arpeggiated synths, lush pads, and tear-jerking vocals show Magnum to be an artist of meticulous attention to detail. On the b-side, ʻDenseʼ is a straight up banger. Crafty bass deployment, rustic synth chords and informed jungle referencing all contribute to what has got to be one of the hardest hitting tracks this winter. Also on the b is the French Fries remix of ʻDenseʼ. As we all know anything the Parisian touches turns to gold and this is no exception. Taking Magnumʼs original concept and stripping it back he adds a touch of grime into the melting pot, à la Slimzee sets circa 2001, and deals with the low end as only one of the finest bass operators would.

SIL010 – The Phantom – EP2 – 12″ Vinyl
After almost 2 years of serving slices of their idea on cutting edge house music on a solely digital basis, the belgian Silverback Recordings now releases its first vinyl…  On “EP 2″ polish producer The Phantom demonstrates he’s a master at creating a soulful, genre-bending, futuristic blend, whilst paying homage to rich Chicago, UK garage, and Detroit traditions, to name but a few. On the A-side “Ceremony” starts off on a smooth hip hop flavored tip, before brilliantly building bridges to piano driven house. “Gothic” holds tight to hybrid thoughts with its melodically mutant, starry-eyed take on grime. The B-side sees an ever-escalating “Voyeur” balancing a fine line between languid safe havens and the abyss of syncopated chaos. The Phantom affirms he’s in control though, as he steps back a few paces on “Colossus”, and serves funked up, eighties evoking, electronic jams as a discursive ender to this trippy four-tracker. Highly acclaimed and limited to 300 12″ copies.  Support by Ikonika, Hackman, Canblaster, French Fries, Teki Latex, Round Table Knights, Dubbel Dutch, Brenmar, Lol Boys, Blackwax, Optimum, Chaos in the CBD, Lil Silva, Martelo,…

CRIT059 – Calibre – Piano Bizness / Smooth Baby – 12″ Vinyl
With our Indian summer holding strong it seems to have spread into camp Critical too as the label that’s delivered the finest grade D&B since 2002 drops another sumptuous release from the man with the Midas touch, Calibre. Showing off his more experimental self is a release that sits perfect on the Critical mantle, sit back and enjoy. ‘Piano Bizness’ is exactly that. A simple stepping break underpins the warm piano moves and seemingly delicate bassline with subtle vocal drops that make for a beautifully mesmerizing slice of Calibre magic. Deepness for a 4am floor or those late night smoking sessions. ‘Smooth Baby’ is another lush journey into the depths of Calibre’s mind. Drawing for a large bending bline with soft subs and finger-click snares this one shows off more of the man’s ability to look outside the norm and come with something fresh and unique. A perfect match then for a label that always strives to break barriers and keep people on their toes. DJ support from those lucky enough to have it….

EXIT035 – Loxy & Resound – Burning Shadows LP Sampler – 12″ Vinyl
Exit Boss dBridge put it himself: “I really love how there’s the reggae side to Loxy’s productions; I thought his sound would really come together as a a whole album, especially with the tech side of Resound. With an album, you’ve got 72 minutes to fill the space with whatever your heart desires. I just love what Loxy & Resound do, so I told them to write the album that they wanted to make. I feel like I got the best out of them this way.”

With the huge kick and snare pounding away, the pressure builds further until all elements of the track are racing towards the drop, and after a short drum fill ‘Dead Planet’ drops into full swing with devastating effect. Cause4Concern let loose with their cutting trademark futuristic synth sounds and drop an absolutely massive bassline capable of shaking any club to it’s foundations. The track creatively progresses and morphs with slick fills and edits along the way, keeping things interesting throughout… classic Cause4Concern at their best. Serious. AA) The Sect – Entheogen – The Sect have come with something fresh and unique for their debut outing on Rise Audio. ‘Entheogen’ is something a bit different from The Sect’s usual heavy and techno edged sound. Atmospheric strings and a beautifully haunting ethnic vocal merge throughout the intro until The Sect lay down some serious slabs of deep sub bass. The pounding bass doesn’t let up once ‘Entheogen’ drops either, the track jumps to attention driven by a huge deep evolving bassine alongside hard and heavy marching drums. An ultra hard kick drum and razor sharp snare keep the groove locked down as The Sect progress the track introducing new sounds and quirky edits. The Sect are on fire at the moment following their debut LP, and with tracks such as ‘Entheogen’ it’s clear to see why… Both sides of RA003, ‘Dead Planet’ and ‘Entheogen’ have been causing a stir on dub plate throughout 2011. Receiving massive global support in clubs, festivals and on radio stations worldwide, Rise Audio continues to grow rapidly with heavy DJ support from the drum & bass scenes elite Ed Rush, Optical, Tech Itch, Cause4Concern, Bailey, Black Sun Empire, Phace, Raiden, Billain, Allied, State of Mind, Maztek… to name a few.

CRUNCH011 – Ben Verse – Manipulate – 12″ Vinyl
Mr Verse return’s to Crunch on a dark tip. this is moody dubstep of a fine calibre. Those familiar with the kind of output Ben’s known for will not be disappointed, ‘No Solution’ rolls out with a grim determination. ‘Manipulation’’s strong rhythm, and a grimey drop tempered by smooth filtered pads over the top. If dark-style dub is your thing you’ll be feeling it. Support from Youngsta, N Type, & Hatcha.

CCB12001 – French Fries – Champagne / Hugz ft. Bambounou – 12″ Vinyl
Tell me, have you got money for this champagne, b*tch…?! That’s it, the first release of the prodigal son French Fries on his own imprint, ClekClekBoom Recordings. A massive turn in his young but already flourished career… this number sees him going deep and dark on “Champagne”, twisting the vibe with mystic flute, nasty strings and cold screwd up grime lyrics, while “Hugz” in collab with partner in crime Bambounou, drops a minimalistic yet sharp and agressive house beat, with old school pulse bass synth flavor and a naughty female vocal touch, a favorite of many big DJs right now. Beware, heavy loaded subs right here, UK style, not for the laptop heads… Limited vinyl edition of 500 copies… seriously man watchu thinking about, pre-order this thing now!

NONPLUS018 – Doubleheart – Salsa Apocalypto – 12″ Vinyl
Instra:mental’s ever-evolving imprint is preparing to drop one of the more esoteric dance singles of the year in Double Heart’s “Salsa”, a glooped out swirl of an electro-house joint that jams on a particularly twisted variety of wavelengths. What strikes initially is the oscillating breakdown, but once inside the blender we are subjected to beady, drizzled percussion and six different shades of fire. A true hybrid, JD Twitch and Neil Landstrumm’s new Doubleheart project sounds very next level, indeed. (http://thekort.com/)

MMAKEM002 – Jack Dixon & Rick Grant – Running Man EP – 12″ Vinyl
Man Make Music’s second release is a collaboration between two talented Londoners, Jack Dixon and Rick Grant. Having already made waves with individual releases on labels such as Brownswood, Hypercolour and TAKE, these two good friends now offer up a pair of brilliantly off-kilter house tracks. ‘Running Man’ is a heady mix of skipping percussion and caressing Juno synth-lines, whilst, on the flip, ‘Muted’ takes a more understated, melancholic turn, counterbalancing the ecstatic nature of the A-side. Jack and Rick’s contributions are also offset by Kevin McPhee’s weird and wonderful slow-mo interpretation of ‘Running Man’. The remix blends vocals drenched in reverb with creeping piano riffs and shows yet another musical side of a man garnering plaudits from all corners for his unique style.

DARKESTRAL006 – Transportation AAD – Last Train To Lexington / U.F.Unk – 12″ Vinyl
Spec: Reverse Board Sleeve features Gold Metallic Pantone logo and lettering front and back, Pantone matched labels, plastic inners.Darkestral was set up as an imagined cinematically orientated sound space allowing producers creative room to make music of a more visual nature, within or outside of their percieved genre. Continuing this theme, Transportation AAD was dreamt up to bring together Drkstr’s (label owner) short film script ideas with Boddika’s exemplary talent at interpretation and production so that over the course of the studio sessions, the script could come to life in audio form. The refers in part to a vessel (Transportation) descended from the Darkestral mothership and to the recording path process, (AAD) Analogue Analogue Digital. a) Transportation AAD ‘Last Train To Lexington’ 4am, Brooklyn, N.Y.C. early 80′s, the last graffed up metallic shell makes its way on a fraught course. Tension, heightened awareness of the grate of wheels on track and late night track repairs in dingy tunnels. A journey that must be undertaken. aa) Transportation AAD ‘U.F.Unk’ A UFO journey between space stations encapsulating gravitational pull, air brakes and subsequent landing. On arrival the beats reduce elements of the last 20 years underground music – detroit, electro, dnb and ragga into a cohesive sound.

Spec: Reversed board sleeve features Silver Metallic Pantone logo and lettering front and back, Pantone matched labels, plastic inners. A selection of short cinematic explorations taking in the ancient, the far reaches of the galaxy and the end-time, featuring Transportation AAD (Boddika/Alex Instra:Mental & Drkstr), Grey Goo (Boddika/Alex Instra:Mental), and Vaalhaala (to remain anonymous..). a1) Transportation AAD ‘Pagoda’ Bladerunner reimagined as 18th Century Kyoto, droplets fall and splash wooden deck from angled eaves in a rained drenched atmosphere, whilst distant drums beat a tender solumn ritual. a2) Grey Goo ‘Lost Transmissions’ The end of time encapsulated, a broken UFO floats through a turbulent shower of space debris, still emiting signals to an unloving universe, no destination, no chance of return. aa1) Vaalhaala ‘Phaethon’ Kaleidoscopic journey toward a lost sun deep in the galaxy, where starburst spectal colours stream through the viewing platform and a lone pilot sees images previously unimagined. aa2) Grey Goo ‘See Me’ Pensive strings and radio static permeate the final journey on this mission, clumps of debris tampoline off the side of the craft as memories flood back to an ancient time and a glint of light enters the scene before we move on to the next undetermined destination with a sense of ease and knowing.

CIV032 – Drums Of Death – Red Waves EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following on from the dark atmosphere of ‘Black Waves’, Drums Of Death returns with the next in the sequence: ‘Red Waves’. Four tracks of ecstatic electronics displaying it’s makers love for techno and house music, all ramped up with big sounds and stripped back arrangements. ‘Tear The Box Apart’ opens the EP with marching snares rolling under a massive lead synth. Toms, snares and claps… the classic palette of the 808 drum machine is well covered but it’s the unique poly-rhythmic synth work and angular arrangements that set the track apart from those of retro-fetishists. Cheeky and fun, ‘The Jerk’ shows that simple elements do a big roller make. So addictive, it’s the bouncing bass and buzzing lead that drag you along. A UK Garage groove takes control whilst the hollowed out barrel toms go for the gut. ‘Venice Beach’ crafts bright chords that swirl and build. The infectious melody makes way for pitched bleeps and a towering ‘Reese’ bassline. Tested extensively in DoD’s frenzied live shows, ‘Venice Beach’ is the glowing, melodic heart at the centre of the adrenaline-fuelled ‘Red Waves’ collection. In ‘Bang The Drum’ Drums Of Death talks to us through a vocoder… “Just bang the drum and kill the noise, mute the synth and then the voice”. Hardly a ballad, this missive represents the newer Drums of Death sound… taught, electronic machine funk. Holding reverence for techno’s godfathers but also for it’s wayward children like Cristian Vogel, an elastic bassline lurches around rattling 909 hi-hats. ‘Bang The Drum’ rounds off a highly energetic EP that continues the ‘Waves’ odyssey of it’s composer.

DP060 – Matty G – Back To The Bay – 12″ Vinyl
The opening hits of the percussion stay smooth and relaxed, and the instruments come in one-by-one – first the synth, then the strings, then the brass – to create an experience that’s both engaging and relaxing. This is the sort of music I would listen to if I cruised the streets of San Francisco in the evenings. As “Back To The Bay” wraps up and pulls us into his remix of “Screw Up,” we get a dose of Subscape’s intensity, but it’s quickly pulled back into Matty G’s signature low-bass, hip-hop/dubstep fusion beats. “Jam Like A Tek” adds in some vocal hooks to get the crowd chanting – and you’re missing out if you don’t add this into your mix. Deep kick drums, a snappy snare, big distortion on the scratchy bass wobbles, and the vocals all come together perfectly to create a track that’ll get people grinding like mad on the dancefloor.

New D&B CD

EXITCD009 – Loxy & Resound – Burning Shadows – CD

New D&B Releases

MARS002 – Mute & Mako – Essential Forms / Who Knows – 12″ Vinyl
Mute & Mako have already proved how good an outfit they are with releases on Mako’s very own label ‘Utopia Music’ & their excellent ‘Astral Transmissions’ on Ingredients, not to mention ‘Rorschach’ on the Recipe Book LP. Well they’re back again with another killer release. “Essential Forms” has all the hallmarks of mid 90’s d&b with it’s long intro, tight drum workout and sublime arrangement. The flip is just as strong, taking you back to an artist called Shogun on Renegade recordings around 1996, this wicked roller is a joy to mix. Keep an eye on this trio!

TKRUK002 – Prolix – Who Run It / Skull Snapz – 12″ Vinyl
TRENDKILL RECORDS is proud to bring you its second release from PROLIX (Playaz, Ganjatek, Metalheadz, Virus, Viper, Uprising, Renegade Hardware). The A Side is a hip-hop vocal infused stomper with huge beats and distorted basslines with hooks that keep you wanting more and more. The AA is a energetic filter workout which twists and turns leaving listeners dizzy with excitement! Both tunes have had great responses on dance floors across the world, and the versatility of these beats will ensure you keep them in your bag for years.

C4CEVR001 – Task Horizon – Kill The Pain / Letting Go – 12″ Vinyl
Kill The Pain: ‘Epic’ is the only way to describe the extended intro of Kill the Pain, featuring acoustic guitar and an earnest male vocal. Then, just before two minutes in, things quickly take a nasty turn as choppy breaks splinter into pieces and the bassline ‘reboots’ The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An aggressive, genre bending, sure fire floor smasher. Letting Go: Teaming up with Kryteria for the flip, a eurphoric, trancey intro leads into a chainsaw reece, setting the scene for the chaotic chiaroscuro to come: beyond the drop sweeping synths and ethereal vocal snippets somehow successfully coalesce with heavily edited breaks and sawing bass, creating a kind of beautiful violence. Subsequently, side effects of Letting Go include spontaneous eruptions of feet on the floor and hands in the air.

SECOPS018 – Robert Manos – Trouble – 12″ Vinyl
It’s been some time since Robert Manos has had a release on Secret Operations. With this single it’s been worth the wait. A. TROUBLE is a deep and emotional track that really shows what Manos is famous for. The depth of the track gets compensated by heavy compressed beats. AA. MADNESS This sparse, beautifully structured track with its elegant instrumentation featuring congas and pianos feels a bit more chill but also plays well in the clubs.

DETAIL008 – Lynx – Devil’s In The Detail Part One – 12″ Vinyl
Opening cut ‘Without Warning’ recalls the tune that rewrote the rules and made Lynx’s name back in 2007, Disco Dodo. One of the true last Dnb anthems that transcended the niches that so often divide the genre. He’s come a long way since then, and recent releases for Metalheadz, Soul:r, Brownswood, Black Acre and his own Detail stable have demonstrated his quality across the board. Lynx’s trademark sonics run throughout the LP, splicing together time signatures and tempos to represent his sound and his label in the fullest. Collaborating with a diverse range of artists in the true spirit of eclecticism, familiar faces including Kemo, DRS, Fats and Deeizm step up to provide vocals whilst the likes of Marcus Intalex and Noisia weigh in to join Lynx at the controls. With a widescreen vision far beyond simple dancefloor drum & bass, Lynx sets out where others fear to tread and crosses bass music boundaries and delivers a complete package with the kind of finesse only an experienced producer of his calibre can accomplish.
Radio & club play is coming from all corners with Andy C, Bailey (BBC 1Xtra), Camo & Krooked, Culture Shock, dBridge, Doc Scott, Flight, Friction, Hype, Klute, Noisia, Marcus Intalex, Presha, Shy FX, Youngsta (Rinse FM) and Zero T in support Andy C: Without Warning is sick bro! The long awaited sequel to the groundbreaking ‘Live For Never’ LP fromNew Zealand electronic wonderkid Consequence is completed and scheduled for a Dec 19th release on Exit Records The release of ‘Live For Never’ reminded the electronic world of the intricacies and emotional heights of Drum & Bass, and carried the genre into new realms of sonic possibility. ʻTest Dreamʼ is not for those who expect the next logical evolution of ʻLive For Never.ʼ It is also not for the unadventurous, nor for those who seek easily digestible music. Creatively free, Consequence revels in pure electronic experimentation, and the result is an album that follows no rules, and explores fractal dimensions that defy conventional genres.

IDLE009 – Outboxx – Aporia / Cromwell – 12″ Vinyl
Rounding off what has been a busy year for Idle Hands comes a 12″ from west country residents Outboxx. This duo, comprised of Jacob Martin (aka Hodge) and Matthew Lambert have steadily built a reputation for themselves with releases on Well Rounded and Immerse. Moving away from the dominant trends in bass music the pair have been forging a sound more akin to early nineties deep house – yet retaining a palette of 2011 sounds. Here they present two tracks – ‘Aporia’ is a lesson in wistful house, all pianos and a sneeky bass drop half way through the tune. ‘Cromwell’ is a straight ahead house roller, but with enough sub to keep the bass enthusiasts happy. Support so far from Ramadanman and Sven Weiseman.

CCB12002 – Coni – Luz In Pool / Suma / Crush – 12″ Vinyl
*Limited edition of 500 heavy weight 180g 12″ vinyl*
Landing as the second release from the new French label ClekclekBoom Recordings, young newroller Coni drops us sensitive, deep but yet powerful tracks with sensual r’n'b reworks that would make any female moan. Combining groovy sophisticated house and naughty/soulful bass on the lead track “Luz in Pool”, the parisian takes us to a delightful journey where you’ll be losing yourself. On the flipside, “Suma” is mixing up an uplfiting 90′s r’n'b vocal with a very effective UK Funky drum line. The laid back G-Swagger “Crush” favoring a modern half-tempo 808 rhythm with a sweet subtle voice adding to a haunting purple synth coloration. This 3 track EP is full of heaviness and is already listed as favorite by many established big names. This number is not to be missed!

PSQ007 – Kowton & Tom Dicicco – Untitled EP – 12″ Vinyl
Kowton and Tom Dicicco, residing in Bristol and Manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. Kowton’s seems to come from House, perhaps also Electro and Garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. Tom’s music is Techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 BPM. With these distinctive styles the idea of a split EP might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each other’s originals on the other. Tom Dicicco’s original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. Kowton’s is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along. On the other side of the record, Kowton’s remix of Tom’s original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. Tom’s remix of Kowton rounds off the EP with a return to stab driven Techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London

WNCL009 – Knowing Looks – Listen To My 45 / Ghost Baby – 10″ Vinyl
Merry Christmas from the Cassette Library!

RWM001 – Lowa – Get Up (Original Mix) / Get Up (Dot Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
One of the first ever female dubstep producers Dot is back with a new record label Read Write Music. Dot has been previously releasing her dubstep production through London based Immigrant Recordings, notably the first female run and musically produced dubstep record label in existence (KidKameleon@XLR8R). Dot’s music gained support throughout the years and has been played by some of the biggest names in the dubstep scene such as Kutz (Wheel&Deal), Mary Anne Hobbs (Xfm), Ramadanman (Hessle,Soul Jazz), L.D. (Ringo,Hyperdub), DJ Chef (Rinse FM, Transition) and others. Dot’s remix of Clara Moreno:Pour Quoi?Nega San Sedalia (out on Far Out Recordings) gained acclaim by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Ross Allen(MoS) and Simon Harrison(Basic Soul). Now opening her own Read Write Music Dot is pleased to present the ‘Get Up EP’ by Lowa/Dot as the first release on the label and judging by the imminent DJ response it looks like this release will be big. Lowa is an Austrian based producer running Shash Records where he releases his own production and music from artists like Abby Lee Tee. ‘Get Up EP’ reminds you why you fell in love in dubstep in the first place. Lowa’s original version of the track Get Up is a mixture of dark 2step vibe blended in with carefully produced fat synths, mysterious pads and a breathtaking bass while Dot’s remix is a pure filthy dancefloor filler with heavy beats and thumping sub bass. It evolves into deeper and heavier drive continuously throughout its development and its hypnotic break adds to the heaviness. A pure dubstep classic you’d be happy to have in your collection as Dot’s releases never tend to disappoint. ‘Get Up EP’ has been spreading with support from dubstep DJ around the world-ranging from Germany to Florida, from UK to Russia and has been played on radios such as RedBull Music Academy Radio. This EP certainly aims to fill the gap of music with a strong socially responsible message and is aiming to encourage debate on the current state of the world we live in.

TSS003 – Trojan Sound System and JFB – Turn to the East – 12″ Vinyl
Limited to 150 white label pressing. “Look to the east for the coming of a black king.” Having smashed dancehalls and festivals throughout Europe over the last 7 years, Trojan Sound System have returned to the studio following their critically acclaimed debut album on Trojan records, “New Rebel Stories”. The songs evolved on classic Reggae anthems in a live sound system context and are now being translated into studio tracks. Debuted at Outlook festival’s main stage a few weeks ago, it destroyed thousands of reggae, dubstep and jungle heads. Trojan Sound System is the performance unit of legendary reggae label Trojan Records. The Sound comprises Daddy Ad, Earl Gateshead, Superfour, Chucky Banton and Jah Buck, all top performers on the London and European sound system scene. They perform at festivals and reggae events all over the world and have crossed over into Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Hip Hop and Dance music clubs and festivals. Recent main stage slots include Camp Bestival, The Garden Festival, Soundwave festival, Reggae Sun Ska and Outlook festival amongst many others. Last year they also sold out two shows at London’s Koko, a serious feat and a benchmark in this authentic reggae sound’s fanbase and potential and return to Koko on October 15th. They are also playing an in-store at London’s Rough Trade East in late September.  “Turn to the East” was written by Superfour, TSS’s energetic and blind vocalist with conscious lyrics and a passionate delivery. The heartfelt chorus is sung by Chucky Banton. The title is inspired by the biblical reference “Look to the east for the coming of a black king” and celebrates numerous black aspirations. Musically, it uses contemporary forms to produce the feel of an ‘80s roots 12” with overpowering bass driving it throughout. Two times DMC champ and Beardyman collaborator, JFB, unleashes a relentless dubstep remix of the track on the B side. There are a string of single releases in the run up to the album on TSS records limited edition white label with more from Toddla T, Jerry Dammers and many more at the production helm with Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad.

Exit presents “Mosaic – Volume 1″

Exit presents “Mosaic – Volume 1″

Posted 28 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, video | 1 Comment

With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles.

As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. Well known producers such as Skream, Instra:mental, Scuba and Commix rub shoulders with some inspiring new talents such as Indigo, Synkro, Mode and Code 3. The theme of the album is quality timeless music, whether it be a dance floor killer such as Systems ‘Observation Point’ or Loxy and Resounds ‘Vertigo’ through to the tangerine dreamlike sounds of Croms  ‘Invisible Cities’ or Stray’s ‘pushed’, this album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today.

Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

Limited information, tracklists etc to come soon, but the formats and schedule will be as follows:

  • Two seperate 2-track 12″/10″ Samplers [EXIT025/026]
  • 4×12″ Gatefold LP version [EXITLP005]
  • 2xCD version [EXITCD005]

Subtitles UK Presents – Ulterior Motive

Subtitles UK Presents – Ulterior Motive

Posted 12 May 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 1 Comment

Breaking through with a fresh & funk-fuelled sound, the Bournemouth-based DJ/production duo of James Davidson and Greg Hepworth are making their mark in 2010 and setting the pace for others to follow.
These two essential singles mark the relaunch of a newly revitalised Subtitles and clearly demonstrate why Ulterior Motive are fast-building a reputation for high-quality, innovative drum & bass.

Ulterior Motive

James Davidson and Greg Hepworth joined forces in 2003 when they discovered a mutual passion for the kind of funky, technical and futuristic drum & bass pioneered by Ed Rush & Optical in the late-90s. Taking this as inspiration, they worked hard to forge a sound of their own by combining custom hand-built studio kit with modern production techniques before tentatively reaching out with early demos. The response was immediate and Ulterior Motive tracks have since become a staple for the very best selectors in the scene.

Teebee was one of the first to recognise their talent, snapping up ‘Infrasonic b/w Holding On to Never’ for Ulterior Motive’s debut single on Subtitles. Summer 2010 brings two further 12”s, ‘Featherweight b/w Glued’ and ‘2098 b/w Yoghurt Brainwave’, with both singles getting heavy rotation right across the board from Noisia, DJ Marky, Marcus Intalex, Alix Perez, Loxy, Calyx, Commix, Break, Icicle and Kasra to name but a few.

One of the standout tracks of 2009’s Sun & Bass Festival, ‘Featherweight’ put the duo firmly on the map and has been punching holes through speakers worldwide ever since. Built on crisp breaks, cheeky percussion and a classic hip-hop hook, the certified dancefloor-smasher showcases their signature funky sound and delivers a downright dirty bassline sure to test any system.

Ulterior Motive

Combining an open-minded creative approach with the technical skills and drive to bring their ideas to life, Ulterior Motive have already collaborated with the likes of Jubei, Rockwell, Zero T, Sabre and FD among others. Demonstrating attention to detail, quality control and a strong work ethic, the versatile producers have their sights firmly set on the top with offers from leading labels and some high profile remix work in the pipeline.

Appearances for top label nights Renegade Hardware and Ram and festivals including Sun & Bass have proved both members of Ulterior Motive to be highly-capable DJs in their own right. Look out for live sets across the UK and Europe as Ulterior Motive look set to build on their successes and keep their sound fresh.

SUBTITLESUK001
Ulterior Motive

a) Featherweight
b) Glued

Released 31st May 2010 on 12″ Vinyl / Digital

Going straight for the knockout in Round 1, ‘Featherweight’ is Ulterior Motive’s biggest track to date and a firm favourite with heavy hitters like Teebee, Hype, DJ Marky, dBridge, Marcus Intalex, Fabio & Grooverider and Friction. Punchy beats combine with a classic hip- hop hook to set the vibes before dropping below-the-belt with a bassline dirtier than Mike Tyson. ‘Glued’ rolls out with infectious percussion and a rasping low-end, keeping crowds gripped to the dancefloor and reinforcing this crucial future-proofed 12”.

SUBTITLESUK002
Ulterior Motive

a) 2098
b) Yoghurt Brainwave

Released 28th June 2010 on 12″ Vinyl / Digital

Ulterior Motive take you back to the future with ‘2098’, recalling pre- millennial tension with sci-fi atmospherics, genetically modified breaks and a bionic bassline straight out of the golden era of drum & bass. DJ support from the likes of Noisia, Ed Rush & Optical, Alix Perez, Jubei, Total Science, Commix and Break proves they’re doing it right. ‘Yoghurt Brainwave’ sees the UM boys swapping their trademark synths for full-fat funk bass and hinting there’s a heck of a lot more in their locker.

What the DJ’s are saying:

Ed RushGonna be playing 2098 for an age, doing serious damage worldwide. More tunes like this please!

dBridgeI wondered how long it would be for someone to come along and re-ignite the flame left to fade by others

SP:MCOptical left the gate open and these boys are coming right on through

JubeiThese guys are like the Marty McFly & Doc Emmett Brown of drum & bass right now, bringing that funk back. As Ulterior Motive build momentum, we all wait with great anticipation

New label: “Voodoo Music” coming soon!

New label: “Voodoo Music” coming soon!

Posted 16 February 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Voodoo music is the new label from Offkey. In the last year Raiden has increasingly begun to explore his love for tribal & percussive based drum n bass and after a recent trip to Latin America the concept for Voodoo Music was born.

In preparation for Voodoo music this year Raiden & Khanage have been busy been creating music that has gathered ‘every set’ support and rewinds from Alix Perez, Loxy, Doc Scott, dBridge, C4C, Rockwell, Icicle, Ink & Bailey amongst others. The tracks have become anthems for the new emerging sound and its followers. Thinking with a mind toward the future we have been keeping our eyes and ears on a few emerging artists that we can develop on a long term basis- Morphy and Khanage to name a few.

Voodoo Music will also feature contributions and collaborations with Rockwell, Loxy, June Miller amongst others, each release will come with its own identity and we will be working closely with the artists to make sure their work is represented in the truest sense.
We are able to work with like minded artists within drum n bass as our work has been received very well by peers and in turn these artists are writing music specifically to fit the sound and concept of Voodoo Music.

The debut release for the label is the long in demand tracks from Raiden entitled ‘Baptism Of Fire’ b/w ‘Danzon’. Baptism Of Fire is a brooding track that thrives on holding a sense of cold tension whilst ‘Danzon’ is a latin inspired skank out that doesn’t go down the trad-latin formula but instead concentrates highly on the complex rhythms of Cuba.

The second 12″ will be another instalment from Raiden & Khanage’s ongoing collaboration with ‘Amnesia Haze’ & ’8798′, two tracks that ignited the initial spark for the Voodoo Music project during a very late in the studio between the pair.

Coming soon, new D&B label: FOOTPRINTS

Coming soon, new D&B label: FOOTPRINTS

Posted 20 January 2010 | By | Categories: misc, news, tracks | 1 Comment

Introducing the new label ‘Footprints’ from Zero Tolerance set to launch in the next few months. Two big first releases to showcase, audio can be found below, first, over to Zero T to introduce the label…..

We at FOOTPRINTS are setting our stall out to provide something we feel has been missing from the zeitgeist for too long now….

That something is “90′s Music”…..yes folks, its been 10 years since the 90s and we for one miss it more than ever. It was a time when music metamorphasized into so many wonderful, radical, heartfelt and completely new forms. Unfortunately, life and culture moves in cycles and i think we can all agree that the “noughties” was a largely forgettable era for ALOT of reasons.

The complete dominance of consumerism in our world has , combined with the Net 2.0 revolution, sucked much the life out of this thing we call music. But every action has an equal and opposite reaction, and if Rage Against The Machine making the UK Christmas No.1 in 2009 is a signal of the backlash, the we at FOOTPRINTS hope to assist this return to an older Ethic:

Motivated from the Heart , not the Wallet.

So, in this new Decade we aim to regularly provide you with music made for your mind AND body, that will shake any building to its foundations but still stand alone as a piece of music, taking you to another place, time or mood when heard in its entirety.

We decided to start as we mean to go on…with a BANG!

FOOTPRINTS debut 12″ features label owner ZERO T and old friend BAILEY (BBC/METALHEADZ) combining to devastatin effect. “Wasp Factory” , as you may have guessed, is not a love song! Currently a favorite of everyone from Goldie, Ed Rush and Optical, Lemonde to Paradox and Loxy….Not for the feint-hearted!

On the flip of this comes a slice of paranoid funk from Belfasts mercurial Genius Calibre , alongside DnB legend ST Files of SOUL:R fame! “Devil Inside” has that familiar Signature/Soul;r roll to it, but the other elements may surprise a few: Dark gliding, filtered Reese bases undulate under a piano line to put a chill down your spine….something different from the norm!

Support from Hype, Fabio, Grooverider, Bryan G, Alix Perez, Spectrasoul, Commix etc..

Following hot on the heels of PRINT001 is PRINT002 :

ZERO T + MOSUS -”Shallow Grave” and BETA 2 – ” Cabin Phever”

ZT and his Kiwi buddy get a bit rowdy this time, with a heavy inspration from the early Virus sound of 1998-99. “Shallow Grave” sneaks in a kicks you in the gut and pounds you like Giant Haystacks!! as the vocal sample states….”.i roam when its dark, and take you to some secret place and bury you” Indeed!

Mr.T decided to keep it in the family , Irish-Style, for the 1st two 12″s. So after old cohort Calibre provided the 1st flip side, next up is Zero’s original colaborative partner BETA 2. Its now 10 years since the pair debuted on 4 HERO’s Reinforced, and a long awaited return to the game from BETA 2 looms large! ” CABIN PHEVER” is classic ‘Blue Note’ buisness, for those that know! Beta tickles the ivories with aplom, plucks the Double Bass and chops a break in a style remeniscent of that ginger Ninja , Rupert Parkes (aka Photek)..Two words:

FILM-NOIR

Heavy support from the likes of Marcus Intalex, Jubei, Ulterior Motive, Bailey, Loxy, Ed Rush etc.

Forthcoming on Exit Records – EXIT019 / 020

Fast becoming one of the most exciting and diverse labels in Drum & Bass ‘Exit Records’ have a massive lineup of quality releases in the pipeline. Forthcoming on the label imminently are EXIT019 and EXIT020. Full details are right here.

The first release for 2010 on Exit records comes in the form of two tracks by Russian newcomers Abstract Elements, made up of two producers Bop and Diagram. Their tracks caught the attention of label owner dBridge with their seemingly fearless quest for experimentation and have featured heavily in the sets of DJs such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Loxy, ASC and also on the Autonomic podcasts. Both tracks sit just as comfortably at clubs such as FWD as they do in an all out DnB party.

A) Abstract Elements – Wrong Way

“Wrong Way” takes us into a void of sound and space, built around a metronomic radar blip, the track sinks down deep through the uncharted depths of the subsonic bass realms. Attention to detail, intricate use of atmospheric sound effects and devastating low end bass give this track a unique sensation which just cannot be ignored. Repeated listening is required to fully explore the vast soundscape that they have created here.

B) Abstract Elements – Abysmal Depth

“Abysmal Depth” could be described as a distorted fusion of dub and electronica but also delves into the 4×4 genre. Once again, their use of constantly transforming effects and mood altering atmospherics give this track the quality of being able to take the listener on a journey and leaves them with an awkward sense of not knowing exactly where they’ve just been. Check out the Farbric Live 50 -dBridge & Instra:mental present Autonomic CD to see just how versatile this track be work in the mix.

Released on 12″ Vinyl / Digital on 1st February 2010.

Mark System is by no means a newcomer to the music world having been performing as an MC and producing music for labels such as Digital Soundboy and Shogun Audio amongst others for over a decade. His debut on Exit Records consists of two tracks which underline his production skills and originality in sound design and arrangement.

A) System – Peach Fuzz

On the A-Side we have “Peach Fuzz”. A track created and named by System after attending and gaining inspiration from Carl Cox’s closing party at Space. He claims that Danny Tenaglia’s set stimulated him to think about new ways of approaching tracks. “Peach Fuzz“ was the result and what a result it was. This track oozes originality and is a pearl in the boxes of many top DJs at the moment such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Ed Rush, Commix, Friction etc etc.

B) System – The Voices

On the B-side we have “Voices” from System, which is an elaborate workout of glitchy beats, choppy break edits and curious melodies. This track is far from formulaic, having been started as an experiment to vent creative juices with no intention of it leaving his computer, were glad it did!

Released on 12″ Vinyl / Digital on 15th February 2010.
