NCQL annouces himself in no uncertain fashion with the anthemic strings of “The Framed Dreams Of Loki”. The track nods to DJ Premier, Prefuse 73 and classic Metalheadz D&B Hidden Agenda style and there’s a subtle (!) reference to a certain classic 90s rave tune in there aswell. It sounds like a mess – it’s anything but ! This is uplifting breakbeat at it’s very best. It’s not often a tune gets played twice by Bailey on his BBC 1Xtra show in the space of a month, so this must be something special. The flipside has a similar organic & uplifting aesthetic. A strutting break is the base for a deluge of warmth in the shape of synths, strings, flutes, harp and vocals – an unusual sound palette for a Drum & Bass track these days but refreshing to hear. DJ Flight thought so and has aired it on one of her “Next Chapter” Rinse FM broadcasts.

I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. Is there anything left to say about Oliver ‘Skream’ Jones the original Dub-step wonder kid that hasn’t already been said, probably not, but for those of you that don’t know here’s a brief history. Skream is one of the founder members of the then UK’s Dubstep movement alongside Digital Mystikz, Benga, Loefah, Kode9 etc and has taken the scene from its original darkest depths of Croydon to the top of the worldwide charts in less than 7 years. Currently one third of the chart topping super group ‘Magnetic Man’ alongside Artwork and Benga, the latter with whom he has travelled the globe DJing, selling out clubs, gigs and festivals wherever they go and who now have a semi regular prime time dance show on BBC Radio 1 showcasing the freshest and heaviest Dubstep joints. I think it’s safe to say without Skream the world of Dubstep would be in a very, very different place.Although some of Skream’s recent productions are finding their way onto daytime radio he has always been an ambassador of hard experimental underground UK dance music and this is exactly what he has delivered for DEEP MEDi. Gritty & Phatty Drummer are his second release for Mala’s (label and showcase Skream’s unquestionable production talent and ear for some of the coldest, stripped back skeletal rhythms around, both tracks are packed with enough dread and sub-weight to give you nightmares, strictly soundsystem music…

Having released the anonymous and enormous F**k Yonkers bootleg earlier this year, the Amsterdam based Audio Culture Label is poised to unleash their first official release,,a piece of music which is the result of the collaborative efforts of Dutch wunderkind Presk and Amsterdam’s premier tastemaker Cinnaman. In part, Pieter ‘Presk’ Willems’ support is responsible for the label’s inception. In a short space of time Presk has built up a solid and impressively distinct sounding catalogue of work released on respected imprints such as Ramp sister label Fourth Wave and Doc Daneeka’s Ten Thousand Yen. Making a name for himself with nothing more than his hands and impeccable taste, Yuri ‘Cinnaman’ Boselie has become somewhat of a musical institution in Amsterdam. He’s the man behind the ground breaking Colors nights and is responsible for the equally forward thinking Beat Dimensions compilations. The B-side features two expertly remixed and uniquely different takes on the original, courtesy of non other than Instra:mental’s Jon Convex and Ten Thousand Yen head honcho Doc Daneeka.

With a musical career including album and single releases on LTJ Bukem’s legendary Good Looking Records imprint, Creative Source, Eastside Records, Innerground Records as well as his own label Human Elements, and musical collaborations with producers such as Zinc, A-Sides, DJ Marky, Greg Packer, vocalists Deeizm or MC Conrad to name but a few, Makoto is a leading figure of the underground scene in Japan and has gone on to be one of the most highly respected artists in the Drum & Bass genre, pushing his unique blend of fast breaks and soul drenched music to every corner of the globe as both a DJ and a producer. Makoto released his highly acclaimed ‘Souled Out’ album at the end of 2011 on Human Elements. The album features many talented vocalists and session musicians and explores various tempos, breakbeats and musical worlds. ‘Souled Out’ is a culmination of the breadth of experience and talent Makoto brings to each track which credits his name. With his first 12” on 7even Recordings, Makoto opens again new musical perspectives, infusing the Amen Break to a 135bpm flex on ‘Different Rhythm’ and his unique soulful treatment to the massive ‘What Do You Want’.

This has nothing to do with Aliens, we wouldn’t be that obvious, but it’s the colour chosen by the artists and we think it looks like another great Mars package.Musically, well Edward Oberon & Paul T have conjured up 2 awesome tracks. “Love is” is absolutely sublime with it’s warm bass line and delicate sounds to the breakdown, while keeping the drums nice and punchy, a great tune to roll out. “Absolute” harks back to the deep sounds of old Good looking by the likes of Big Bud or Tayla. Ridiculous sub-lo bass and deep strings, this is how Mars do things and we feel it’s another quality 12″ where the music & the packaging matters.

The opening hits of the percussion stay smooth and relaxed, and the instruments come in one-by-one – first the synth, then the strings, then the brass – to create an experience that’s both engaging and relaxing. This is the sort of music I would listen to if I cruised the streets of San Francisco in the evenings. As “Back To The Bay” wraps up and pulls us into his remix of “Screw Up,” we get a dose of Subscape’s intensity, but it’s quickly pulled back into Matty G’s signature low-bass, hip-hop/dubstep fusion beats. “Jam Like A Tek” adds in some vocal hooks to get the crowd chanting – and you’re missing out if you don’t add this into your mix. Deep kick drums, a snappy snare, big distortion on the scratchy bass wobbles, and the vocals all come together perfectly to create a track that’ll get people grinding like mad on the dancefloor.

Kowton and Tom Dicicco, residing in Bristol and Manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. Kowton’s seems to come from House, perhaps also Electro and Garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. Tom’s music is Techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 BPM. With these distinctive styles the idea of a split EP might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each other’s originals on the other.Tom Dicicco’s original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. Kowton’s is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along.On the other side of the record, Kowton’s remix of Tom’s original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. Tom’s remix of Kowton rounds off the EP with a return to stab driven Techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London.

And better he has become. New Epoch, Goth-Trad’s debut album for the DEEP MEDi Musik imprint due out in February 2012, is the result of over a decade of pushing forward from the man Kode9 calls “a one-man army mutating the UK hardcore continuum in Japan.” Takeaki Maruyama aka Goth-Trad is a spearhead among producers worldwide who have taken the sounds of the UK underground and mutated them into new forms – or, in this case, into New Epoch. However, for Maruyama-san it’s never been about trying to replicate the UK sound as he acknowledged in a 2008 interview, “Looking at good Dubstep producers, I don’t think they are trying to make Dubstep. They are already looking beyond this, and trying to make something new. They are thinking on another level. That’s the fun part!” And fun is something he knows all about.

Emerging from a vibrant underground Japanese electronic scene, Maruyama-san has developed into one of the most outstanding artists of his generation. His unique “fun” style involves freely playing samplers, keyboards and even self-made instruments – this approach brought him the nickname “the Sound Originator.” His sound comprises a broad palette of influences from Abstract Electronica to Noise, from Dub and Reggae to Jungle, from Rave and Grime to Punk, and almost every form of music somehow is absorbed into his black hole-like approach, emerging from a trans-warp conduit on the other side as something uniquely Goth- Trad. Maruyama-san has simply always been experimenting and developing his own sound palette. This truly unique, abstract approach has earned him a place at the forefront of dance music in Tokyo – quite a feat in of itself since Tokyo has one of the most complex and engaging scenes for electronic music in the world. With a strong back catalogue of albums and touring beneath his belt the buzz for his music has slowly spread further and further around the world, New Epoch is certain to bring the bass mutations of this Tokyoite even further.

Maruyama-san first started producing music in 1998 and by 2001, he was ready for a breakthrough. It came when he formed the band Rebel Familia with the much-respected Dub Reggae bass player Takeshi ‘Heavy’ Akimoto of Dry & Heavy, a legendary Japanese act. By 2003, he had released his first solo album Goth Trad 1, which led to his debut European tour the same year and an opening slot for respected indie rock act The Mars Volta the following year. Maruyama-san says of this period, “Before Dubstep I was making experimental beats or almost kind of ambient.” His second album The Inverted Perspective in 2005 shifted the focus to the live improvisational style that he continues to develop and refine to this day. Looking back, he describes the record as “almost a noise experiment.” This was swiftly followed by a third album Mad Ravers Dance Floor, which was his first move towards the kind of dance music he makes today. He recalled what inspired him at the moment in an interview with Knowledge magazine – “When I found Grime music I heard Morgue by Wiley. It’s very deep and like down-tempo Hip-Hop but has more bass. Maybe we could call that Dubstep but back then it was called Grime. The first image was ‘deep’. The music totally fit some vision in my head. I felt something from that music.”
Mad Ravers Dance Floor opened European ears to his sound even more – especially when the Grime-inspired single Back to Chill was picked up by UK label Skud beats, catching the attention of the expanding bass music scene in the UK. By the end of 2006 Goth-Trad also started own night in Japan named after the single and he embarked on his fourth European tour that provided a pivotal breakthrough moment in his career thanks to a timely meeting at the London club FWD>> with Dubstep pioneer Mala from Digital Mystikz.

Mala signed the single Cut End / Flags to his own DEEP MEDi Musik imprint and subsequently those cuts garnered noise from a strong core of supporters including artists like The Bug, Kode 9, Coki, Skream and Mary Ann Hobbs. A new era had started for Maruyama-san: after four European tours, three solo albums and countless other work he was embraced by the growing bass music scene as a force to be reckoned with.

In due course this led to continued engagements for his music. By 2007 he played the legendary DMZ event for the first time and was the opening DJ for Skream, Kode9 and The Bug on Japanese dates. Not one to stop moving, he also continued his work with the band Rebel Familia, releasing an album that featured collaborations with Punky Reggae legend Arie Up and reggae godfather Max Romeo. This project tethered him to dub more and his love of deeper dub-based sounds remains a constant in his music to this day. His relationship with Romeo also continued with the Lee Perry-associated singer making an appearance on the club smasher single Babylon Fall released this past September on DEEP MEDi Musik and also featured on New Epoch. Romeo’s mystic voice lends itself well to the spirit-laden music of Goth-Trad. Unlike the Shinto mountain and forest spirits of old though Maruyama-san’s music is firmly routed around the spirits of his city. His is the music of dark alleyways in Shinjinku on a cold wet night, the soundtrack to the underbelly of a sprawling modern metropolis on the edge, a noir Tokyo first seen in the post-war films of Japanese New Wave directors in the early 60s and the films of the Art Theatre Guild. It is Western-influenced yet uniquely Japanese.

In the Art Theatre Guild film Eros Massacre we see the story of a Japanese anarchist revealed as sword fights take place on a Tokyo highway shot in beautiful captivating widescreen black and white. It’s this kind of contradiction that we hear in Goth-Trad – sounds we think we know mutated into new shapes and forms. The sound of Goth-Trad cuts through the humdrum of copycats. 2007 ended for Goth-Trad with more European dates across eight countries, this time with both live and DJ performances. The following year he continued to build his reputation with three releases – Far East Assassin for Skud Beats, Genesis for Soul Jazz Records and Law for DEEP MEDi Musik, the imprint that was quickly becoming Goth-Trad’s home. In 2009 he became an in- demand remixer with remixes for both Skream and Distance. Two more heavyweight singles for DEEP MEDi Musik Dark Path and Sunbeam also followed. After that came same lab time leading up to his most assured sounding album to date.

New Epoch is by far and away Goth-Trad’s most complete piece of work to date, showcasing what he is has learnt in his years of producing, touring, playing live and remixing. The album features eleven superbly and delicately crafted tracks. From the opener Man In the Maze full of beautifully dark, emotional strings and pulsating, mesmerizing groove to the intense synthesizer stabs and pure dance-floor mayhem of the Mirage – one of the strongest tracks that has been firing in heavy rotations from Mala and Kode9 – to the title track New Epoch which defines a producer digging through different styles, experiences and cultures to find himself now one of the most unique artists within the scene and beyond. We’ll leave the final words to Goth-Trad himself (as told in September to Low End Theory),
“To be honest with you I’m not listening to Dubstep that much, the whole reason I got into making Dubstep is because it’s free. You can do anything with it. Take it all sorts of directions…. I’m always looking for more directions and styles within my work, but I’m not really thinking I’m doing Dubstep. I’m just doing my sound. I’ve been doing this style of music for almost ten years and I just say all this music is bass music. I’m putting a lot of variety into the new album. Some tunes are very techie, some tunes are much more experimental, a bit glitchy. There may be some more banging stuff. I’ve lots of ideas to keep moving with.”

Man Make Music’s second release is a collaboration between two talented Londoners, Jack Dixon and Rick Grant. Having already made waves with individual releases on labels such as Brownswood, Hypercolour and TAKE, these two good friends now offer up a pair of brilliantly off-kilter house tracks. ‘Running Man’ is a heady mix of skipping percussion and caressing Juno synth-lines, whilst, on the flip, ‘Muted’ takes a more understated, melancholic turn, counterbalancing the ecstatic nature of the A-side. Jack and Rick’s contributions are also offset by Kevin McPhee’s weird and wonderful slow-mo interpretation of ‘Running Man’. The remix blends vocals drenched in reverb with creeping piano riffs and shows yet another musical side of a man garnering plaudits from all corners for his unique style.

A journey that must be undertaken. aa) Transportation AAD ‘U.F.Unk’ A UFO journey between space stations encapsulating gravitational pull, air brakes and subsequent landing. The opening hits of the percussion stay smooth and relaxed, and the instruments come in one-by-one – first the synth, then the strings, then the brass – to create an experience that’s both engaging and relaxing. This is the sort of music I would listen to if I cruised the streets of San Francisco in the evenings. As “Back To The Bay” wraps up and pulls us into his remix of “Screw Up,” we get a dose of Subscape’s intensity, but it’s quickly pulled back into Matty G’s signature low-bass, hip-hop/dubstep fusion beats. “Jam Like A Tek” adds in some vocal hooks to get the crowd chanting – and you’re missing out if you don’t add this into your mix. Deep kick drums, a snappy snare, big distortion on the scratchy bass wobbles, and the vocals all come together perfectly to create a track that’ll get people grinding like mad on the dancefloor.

I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. So peace to Dj Cra$y wherever you are and respect to BrEaCh for putting these together. best, VonStroke.

We’re proud to announce Geiom’s full debut for Frijsfo Beats, His 12-inch is doubly exciting in that it makes a new departure into the tempo and rhythms of ‘half-step’ drum ‘n’ bass. The tracks have already earned support from ASC (Autonomic), DJ Alley Cat, Boxcutter, Autechre and West Norwood For this latest material, the closest reference point is drum & bass’s thriving half-step sub-genre. ‘Resi Claart’ unfolds with a similar steely, Terminator-like persistence, although instead of militantly in thrall to the grid, it’s gracefully executed. In certain ways the vibe is closer to nineties ambient jungle, although it couldn’t be mistaken for a product of either scene – fleshed out as it is with Geiom’s distinctive harmonies in brown, dystopian mode. B-side ‘Stel Dum’ is subtly woven around live drum and Moog tracks, pivoting on a skeleton of robotic calypso percussion as the title half suggests. Gradually the framework is stuffed with digitised silk and spice textures, building up a palette as lush as that of Island Noise and making for just as absorbing a listen. It might have been simple to capitalise on the existing reputation of Geiom’s music in other styles, but we think it’s more than worthwhile to bring listeners this new stage of his evolution. We hope you’ll agree.

Without doubt Excision and his Rottun Recordings label have been one of the dubstep success stories of the last few years. From humble beginnings in British Columbia, Canada, to a worldwide fanbase comprised of thousands upon thousands of fans. Anyone who witnessed Excision destroy dancefloors in Paris, London, Bristol, Manchester and a host of other European cities on his recent tour will understand the effect his music is having around the world. EX7 is Rottun’s sister label, and was home to one of Excision’s most recognisable hits yet, the infamous ‘Swagga’ (produced alongside Datsik). Here Excision teams up with another member of the Rottun camp to create two incredible pieces of filthy dubstep. ‘Heavy Artillery’ features Messinian, one of the USA’s most well known D&B and dubstep MCs. Taking the formula of using hip hop samples and turning it on its head with powerful original vocals that ignite the dance alongside some West Coast lead lines, this one is heavy on the hip!Flip over and the gruesome twosome team up once more on ‘Reploid’, a gurgling bassline-led track complete with grinding syncopated synths and pounding beats. Both tracks featured heavily in Excision’s sets during his recent EU/UK tour and will no doubt be flying off the shelves this winter.

This release however sees Shackleton once again with his own label which will go by the name of Woe To The Septic Heart!Those who have heard Shackleton before may know what to expect and will not be surprised to hear two bass-heavy, percussive tracks with a psychedelic edge and an involved narrative that will perhaps not be played out on every dancefloor. Fresh off the back of their debut ‘Puppets’ LP and a very successful European DJ tour, the trio from New Zealand drop another bomb, this time on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz label in the form of a four track EP ‘Stranger than fiction’. Staying true to their sound, they roll out four very different tracks but all with the same distinctive Truth vibes. ‘Wednesday’ is first off to warm up the speaker coils and set the mood with their trademark eerie atmospheres, gut rumbling basslines and quirky paranoia educing effects. Just when you thought there was no light at the end of the tunnel, they drop a glimmer of hope with the soul warming ‘Stay’ with its heart wrenching strings, calming Rhodes chords and reassuring vocals, it serves well as the lull before the storm. Up next the clouds blacken again and it’s deep into the jungle with ‘Bubba Ho Step’. Tribal drums beat in the distance like some kind of rain dance, and so the storm begins. Sub bass slowly morphs into a pounding, precision timed, chest shattering mid range that is dealt in just the right amounts, this tune will mash up any dance floor without any repetitive overkill. Then we move into the apocalyptic aftermath of ‘The Future’. Once again the paranoia sets in and we realize there really is no hope for mankind after all. A shuffling drum step and percussion, cinematic atmospheres and a simmering mid range crackle and fizz like burning embers amongst char grilled concrete ruins. Having been caned by all the main playas over the last year such as Skream, Mala, Hatcha, Joe Nice and N-Type to name a few, this is a must for your record box.

lol is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one)They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

It is the first port of call for a whole roll-call of artists from original nuttahs like, Mala, Coki, Loefah, Burial, Kode 9, Skream and Benga to the international artists who only want their shit cut at Transition, as well as a heady brew of musicians including everyone from Jah Shaka to funky man of the moment DJ Paleface to avant garde ambient don Christian Fennesz. Basically, Jason is sound, in both senses of the word.

Initially, most of the custom came from the reggae community. “We stuck a load of flyers out and waited. I learnt my craft cutting reggae. It’s a serious situation when you have two different sounds playing a clash and you are cutting for both sides there is no room for error.” Word soon spread and thanks to some flyers in Big Apple and a call from Magnetic Man’s Arthur ‘Artwork’ Smith, Jason became the man that all the early dubstep producers went to for their dubs. “I just got into work one day and I was busy.” People also knew that what happens in Transition stays in Transition. “We’ve got to keep secrets. I can’t tell anyone what the DJ before has cut, that’s an unfair advantage. Cutting engineers have to know how to keep quiet.” Guys like Joel from Scratch Perverts, or guys from the garage days. I just want to be the best cutting engineer in the world, it’s that simple. It’s not really a money thing. Obviously I want to earn money but more than that I want to be the best. You don’t see many cutting engineers in the club, but I do actually like the music. I wouldn’t do it if
I didn’t.”

It’s also why he runs two labels, one named after the cutting house Transition and another named Ringo, after Jason’s sadly departed dog who would be there, lying under the desk at 2am when Jason would be cutting and cutting for late night sound-clash business. The labels are going strong which is why we have compiled these CDs of past and future releases.

Scuba’s critically acclaimed album is reworked for ‘Triangulation (Interpretations)’ Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has been at the forefront of the dubstep scene since its birth. Having founded the innovative and influential Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, he has continually brought colour and depth to an advancing genre, expanding its sonic structure and increasing its influence on the wider electronic scene. Through Scuba and seminal work by central figures including Distance, Vex’d and more recently Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison, Hotflush remains crucial to the immediate moment and the developing future of the most exciting aspects of electronic music. In addition to label and production duties, he also runs the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at Berlin’s techno Mecca, Berghain, the sound of which he committed to plastic in a DJ mix released on Ostgut Ton in January 2010.

Following the first Scuba LP, A Mutual Antipathy (2008) which was remixed by Marcel Dettman, Martyn and Surgeon, Triangulation (2010) took the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But Triangulation moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive.

For Triangulation (Interpretations) new allure is breathed into Scuba’s originals. The listless beauty of Before is embued with a spine tingling warmth on Scuba’s luscious opening re-edit, Before (After). A remix of Latch by Will Saul & Mike Monday of Simple Records, Aus Music and Buzzin’ Fly, infuses the dubbed out original with a dose of bumping house flavor. America’s totem of bass Faulty DL takes leave from the original On Deck with a low burring bassline and elegantly woven melodies drawn warmly across the whole. Scuba’s back with the old skool vibes on You Got Me (I Got You) but confidently skips the line by keeping it firmly in this moment. Canadian Deadbeat has showcased his own brand of dub laden electronics for the likes of Wagon Repair, Scape, Spectral , Musique Risque and Cynosure over the past decade, his remix of Tracers sees him in classic form delivering a deep 7am techno heavy hitter. Joe made an immediate impact on the scene with his 12”s on Hessle Audio and Applepips over the past year, his rework of So You Think You’re Special has a slowly blossoming groove underpinning stuttering percussion, jangling keys and an expertly playful melody that opens out across the sparse background. Finally, South London’s Deadboy offers an understated modern jungle remix of Before with skittering hats and heavy bass that can’t fail to light up floors and faces.

PAL061 Assimilation – John Tejada & Josh Humphrey Palette Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Tejada and Humphrey made their debut together late in 09 with their “Marooned,” ep. “Assimilation” continues the theme of being marooned in Los Angeles. The four works compiled here are the result of the best moments out of 20 recording sessions. The music is for the most part assembled with analog instruments with Humphrey and Tejada bringing their modular gear together for the sessions. Humphrey’s knowledge of synths and programming is quite extensive. He until recently helped operate LA based Big City Music, a dealer of modular and boutique synthesizers. The four works cover a wide range. “Assimilation” builds up panning modular basslines and swirling percussion with a building chord line that brings things together as the drums build. “Culture Shock” uses pitch shifting trickery to transpose the main melodic hook slamming it into nasty modular bass modulation giving the track it’s pretty/dark edge. “Adaptation” keeps it’s modular touches a bit more subtle focusing on classic melodic Tejada chords and nostalgic beats. “Subversion” rounds things out with a non 4/4 piece perhaps being the most nostalgic moment of the ep. This highly melodic uplifting track takes it’s cues from happy musical memories. Classic chords, 808 beats, and some melodic modular lines to close out the ep.

NS008 Wut – Girl Unit Night Slugs 12″ Vinyl
Earlier this year, Girl Unit dropped his debut ‘IRL’ EP on Night Slugs, introducing to the world his unique style of futuristic, 808-driven club trax. Now after months of anticipation, comes his mammoth follow-up in the form of the intergalactic smash hit ‘Wut’ – a digital masterpiece steeped in glorious, organic euphoria. Where ‘IRL’ was an excursion into ghetto house, the half-time ‘Wut’ is draws heavily on Girl Unit’s Southern rap influences. Its booming low-slung kicks, monumental claps and 808 triplets might feel familiar, but the track’s rapturous organs and vocal hook raise it to levels unparalleled, leading to uncontrollable dancefloor jubilation. The rest of the EP follows in a suitably crunked-out style while exploring different moods. ‘Every Time’ is a massive, triumphant, dramatically orchestral arrangement, which sees Girl Unit adopt his hovering synths to play epic horns, brooding organs, strings and even a honky-tonk piano. The result is crushingly heavy and just as emotional. The EP closes with “Showstoppa”, which utilises fewer elements than the others but hits just as hard.

SEPTIC1 Man On A String Part 1 and 2 – Shackleton Woe To The Septic Heart! 12″ Vinyl

Since writing the suicide note for Skull Disco in 2008, Shackleton has made a well received long player for Perlon and remixed the likes of Harmonia and Brian Eno, Moderat and To Rococo Rot as well as making a mix cd for the Fabric series and one of the final mixes for the Mary Anne Hobbes show on Radio One. This release however sees Shackleton once again with his own label which will go by the name of Woe To The Septic Heart!
Those who have heard Shackleton before may know what to expect and will not be surprised to hear two bass-heavy, percussive tracks with a psychedelic edge and an involved narrative that will perhaps not be played out on every dancefloor. More’s the pity.

Subbalicious Recordings is more about sexy sounds between all the loud and noisy ones. Argon has also done quite a few releases from these rising stars and planned a whole album with music from both these artists early 2011.
