New D&B Releases

DIS049 – Marcus Intalex – Stark / Virgo – 12″ Vinyl
Dispatch Recordings is proud to count the Manchester legend among its ranks from now on. You can’t have missed one of the numerous top notch sounds he’s been providing throughout his long career. He is now gathering a forward thinking and historically self conscious music that we could easily define as pretty unique in its genre. The Soul :R boss offers us this time a really valuable glimpse of what D&B should be nowadays : inventive, energetic and technically perfect. When all these elements meet the great sense of groove of the big Soul master, you have a result you can genuinely be happy with. So are we. A. ‘Stark’ Classic tune ! No doubt nobody else would have been able to orchestrate that well so a large scape of unexpected tonalities. These mastered wobbles and swinging rythm make definitely up Marcus’ secret weapons. Some pure electric sounds dive you in a delicious nostalgic style of his own. The final result : a furiously original dance song. AA. ‘Virgo’ This is first a matter of musicality. A lively & lovely lead which is redolent of some of the biggest D&B anthems. A peerless technical and musical knowhow we can feel at every step of the tune. That percussive drum slightly enveloped by an ethereal melody creates a perfect wellbalanced ambiance. Absolute dancefloor killer. DJ support from: Ant TC1, Rob Da Bank, Calibre, Artificial Intelligence, Doc Scott, Fabio, Marky, DBridge,Rockwell, Octane & DLR, Need For Mirrors, Dabs, Lenzman, Survival, Youngsta, Skeptical, to name a few.

SYMM010 – Break / Xtrah – They’re Wrong / Cyrax – 12″ Vinyl
Having smashed dancefloors with ‘Framework’, Break returns with a different flavour & reminding people just how versatile he can be, while retaining the excellence he strives for every time. ”They’re wrong” is pure heaven, with it’s funky guitar licks and sublime pads, already touted as one of the tunes of 2012 with heavy rotation from Dj Marky & Ltj Bukem. Once you hear the vocal, you’ll know the tune. In keeping with Break’s idea to find the very best new skool talent, the flip side “Cyrax” is a monster track by the much talked about Xtrah! Straight up gnarly bass tones, sick percussion and heavy beats fit perfectly on the Symmetry label and completes another must-have single.

a Break – They’re Wrong
b Xtrah – Cyrax

REDSEAL014 – ASC – Droids / Never Enough – 12″ Vinyl
Limited coloured vinyl: Solid blue, crystal clear & white mixed. Mutant cyber funk from the man behind Auxilliary, Symbol and one of the albums that has come to signify the Autonomic sound. ‘Droids’ follows ‘Brainscan’ perfectly. A muted power break jabs its way to the drop where it is joined by a writhing bassline, snippets of a classic break and signifying bleeps that mark this as the closest Drum and Bass can get to techno without a 4/4. The layers great techno music is known for are also taken care of here, with the power of every element wrung out to its true potential. ‘Never Enough’ is a drum workout of the highest order, with filters wrapping themselves around the twisting break edits, claps and steadying bassline. Vinyl buyers get an exclusive ambient piece …sshhhhhhh.
DJ Support from dBridge, Loxy, Consequence, Synkro, Indigo, Presha and many more.

AM007 – Alaska – Arcosphere / Moraine – 12″ Vinyl
Arctic Music celebrates 16 years of Alaska with the new 2012 release Arcosphere / Moraine. Just when you thought Alaska couldn’t top AM006’s Boreal / Isochime the programmer steps up another gear and unleashes Arcosphere / Moraine for the die-hard ambient-jungle lovers. Arcosphere is simply ‘beautiful drum and bass’. Ambient pads and trademark funky breaks gather pace and on the 1:50 mark the bass drops with guitar hooks that melt you instantly and you feel the warmth and identity of Arcosphere. Layers of ambience and breaks unfold building the vibe up to a gorgeous breakdown at 4:45 demonstrating Alaska’s 16 years of experience to perfection. Close your eyes and let the sounds of Arcosphere take you away on a journey of bliss. Moraine is ethereal Alaska back in the hot seat. Dreamy strings hook you from the word go and you would presume a calm ride was ahead, however Alaska is the master of raw breakbeats and a powerful harsh 1970’s funk break appears from nowhere destroying all in it’s path whilst letting the strings breath on their own to lead Moraine into an atmospheric crescendo. Arctic Music is proud to be the only label releasing this style of drum and bass on vinyl, flying the union jack for ambient jungle the world over.

Hi-Tech soul for the 2012! SUBTLE016 – NCQL – The Framed Dreams Of Loki – 12″ Vinyl
NCQL annouces himself in no uncertain fashion with the anthemic strings of “The Framed Dreams Of Loki”. The track nods to DJ Premier, Prefuse 73 and classic Metalheadz D&B Hidden Agenda style and there’s a subtle (!) reference to a certain classic 90s rave tune in there aswell. It sounds like a mess – it’s anything but ! This is uplifting breakbeat at it’s very best. It’s not often a tune gets played twice by Bailey on his BBC 1Xtra show in the space of a month, so this must be something special. The flipside has a similar organic & uplifting aesthetic. A strutting break is the base for a deluge of warmth in the shape of synths, strings, flutes, harp and vocals – an unusual sound palette for a Drum & Bass track these days but refreshing to hear. DJ Flight thought so and has aired it on one of her “Next Chapter” Rinse FM broadcasts.

TR004 – Dismantle – Broke / Times Up – 12″ Vinyl
Following on from his massive cross genre hit ‘Computation’ Dismantle hit’s us again with his first release on Terrain, N-Types jungle influenced Dubstep label. Both tracks have been kept very exclusive, to keep the dubplate vibe alive. Broke: Deep dark and dangerous, rolling breaks and tribal percussion alongside jungalist pads and thunderous bass. This one tears down the dance in the best way possible. Dark, but energetic, a staple in N-Type set. Time’s up: Similar darkness but more steppy. This one hits you hard with tearing hoovers, powerful lfo’s and all the atmosphere from a 90′s warehouse rave, in a 2011 style.

ORCA005 – XI – Immunity / Squeeze – 12″ Vinyl
Following the huge success of xxxy’s summer anthem ‘Open Your Eyes’, Orca Recordings is back to deliver its highly anticipated fifth instalment; which sees Canadian born artist XI return to the label for his third release on the label. With his new outing on Orca, XI’s musical style has evolved considerably to incorporate a whole new set of influences and ideas. This bold move coincides with his imminent arrival in Berlin, which leads us to proudly announce that the productions set for release in the Orca series are ‘Immunity’ and ‘Squeeze’. ‘Immunity’ sees XI venture into new sonic territory, dropping the bpm to a tempo usually applied to house & techno, but this track keeps all the swing and swagger of the finest UK garage record. This combined with XI’s trademark palette of sonic textures, vocal edits and a nod to the haziest of west coast hip-hop has created a deeply original composition with a unique vibe. On the flip, ‘Squeeze’ is another experiment into this freshly styled structure that XI has created, but with the dance floor more in mind. The introduction breeds tension as the drums roll from side to side, before a patterned vocal stab is brought in to focus the main body of the composition. Both of these productions are a clear indication of XI’s creative flair and taste for new sounds. Allowing this to develop has been the primary focus of Orca and this ethos is now starting to pay dividends to all fans of the Orca Recordings catalogue.

DB063 – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – 12″ Vinyl
I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. So peace to Dj Cra$y wherever you are and respect to BrEaCh for putting these together. best, VonStroke.

CHST016 – Tunnidge & Distance – Aftershock / Blame – 12″ Vinyl
Having had one of his most successful years to date during 2011, releasing the immense ‘Falling’ on Island Records, dubstep stalwart DJ Distance kicks off 2012 on his own beloved Chestplate imprint to assert his grip on the scene he’s played such a large part in shaping since its inception. Heading up CHST016 is longtime sparring partner and Chestplate affiliate Tunnidge, who as ever gets ready to drop some seriously dangerous aural artillery on us. Get ready, speaker’s gonna shake! ‘Aftershock’ rolls out hard! A seemingly short intro of eerie pads and blip fx give way to one hell of a barrage of bass that’ll have you wincing with pleasure as it rattles your ribcage and forces you to submit. Raw, analogue sounding, distorted but punching dubstep that takes no prisoners. Essential dance floor dynamite. Flipping over and Tunnidge is joined by Distance on ‘Blame’, a deep brooding slab of bass music that won’t fail to move you. Cinematic soundscapes abound as it kicks off, setting the scene perfectly. Whispered vocals, industrial palettes of percussion and a sinister seeping riff make for a drop into a classy piece of rootsy dubstep that sits perfectly on a label that always stays true to the cause. One for the soldiers.

PHREAKS026 – Diesel – Chew Your Brains Feat Captain Crunch – 12″ Vinyl
Audio Phreaks are proud to present an astonishing new EP from their exciting new signing, Diesel! Diesel has been locked away in the Studio perfecting his sound to a very high production level and you can instantly hear this boy has been putting in the hours since his earlier recordings. His productions are just insane and are certainly not for those who are looking out for an easy listen. Basslines and beats collide with some very imaginative arrangements that make up a truly unique and distinct sound that only can be associated with the rising young talent that is Diesel. “Chew Your Brains” Featuring scratching from Captain Crunch is a 100BPM roller with more wobble than a jelly on a train! Then Durty Phresh (Formally Mr Vermin) is on remix duties and gives it a 140BPM twist that is sounding very fresh indeedy! It’s got that Thugstep swagger that Durty Phesh executes so well and gives the tune a totally different flavour. “Play that Funky Bassline” is a new style of Dubstep that seems to be flying around at the moment that infuses Dubstep with some Funky flavours of the past. “Make the beat Bite” is the last track on this incredible EP that features Brotherhood of Filth and MC Maksim. Another 100BPM recording with a proper edgy, Grimy influence that is immaculately produced.

FRJ011 – Atki2 – Knock Knock / Vietnam – 7″ Vinyl
After cutting his teeth on the respected Werk Discs back in 2005, Sam Atkins has had sporadic and sparse output under this alias. So, it’s good to see Atki2 back with some fresh titbits for 2012. Knock Knock and Vietnam have a wonderful cockeyed dancehall characteristic to them, think the 90’s heavily electronic styles from the likes of Fashion, Steely & Clevie, Taxi labels, with it’s twisted and often weird electronics but all within a dagger inducing locked groove. Get to know. 7/10 (Mark Gurney, DJ Magazine).

BMT006 – Blu Mar Ten – Problem Child / Sweet Little Supernova – 12″ Vinyl
Blu Mar Ten release the second single from their much-anticipated new album project ‘Love is the Devil’. Problem Child: Fusing the classic Virus sound with Blu Mar Ten’s inimitable ethereal production ‘Problem Child’ is cross-scene classic finding its way into a wide range of sets, from D Bridge and London Elektricity to Hype and Nicky Blackmarket. A deceptively sedate intro of choirs and strings gives way to a rollout full of howling mid-range and sub basses, interspersed with phrases of pure distortion all gliding over a set of sleazily funky breaks. Watch out for the rollercoaster reese on the second drop, guaranteed to send any club potty. Sweet Little Supernova: In stark contrast, ‘Sweet Little Supernova’ showcases the talents of Rochelle Parker who delivers a Cocteau Twins-esque vocal over Blu Mar Ten’s dense music. An acoustic percussion line underpins a pulsing set of basslines while a soaring mix of organic & synthetic instrumentation weaves around the unearthly vocal, providing a clear feminine counterpoint to ‘Problem Child’s resolutely masculine approach. With resident designer ithinkitsnice on artwork duties Problem Child / Sweet Little Supernova is a clear indication of the quality to be expected from the forthcoming Love Is The Devil LP. Blu Mar Ten receive regular DJ support from: Marky, London Elektricity, Doc Scott, Futurebound, Teebee, Instra:mental, D Bridge, Hype, John B, Logistics, Ed Rush, Marcus Intalex, Utah Jazz, Nicky Blackmarket, Makoto, Spectrasoul ,Simon Bassline Smith, Mutated Forms, Randall, Kasra, Ulterior Motive, B Complex, Apex, SPY, Craggz, DKay, Seba, Loxy, Ink, Lynx, John B, Data, Nerm & D-Kode, Jaydan, Annie Nightingale, Crissy Criss, Mosus, A Sides, Tom Middleton, ASC, State of Mind, Lomax, Alleycat, Big Bud and many more

Dom of Dom & Roland needs no introduction. With his Roland sampler, he has been at the apex of drum and bass since the mid 90ʻs. One of the original pioneers of the techstep sound. NME once called him the George Lucas of the scene, due to his unfaltering ability to provide the listener with an auralʼgasm of epic soundscapes inspired by the visuals of a thousand sci-fi movies. You only have to search for the youtube video of DJ Marky “broking out” to Enforced which he played as his last tune at Global Gathering this year to see the impact this album will have this year and for the years to come.

CRIT058 – Foreign Concept – Mob Justice – 12″ Vinyl
Moving towards the end of the year and it’s time for a temperature change as Critical gets ice cold with the talents of D&B scene newcomer, Foreign Concept. Although a relatively fresh face Foreign Concept has already made quite a name for himself have signed tunes to the likes of Samurai, Ingredients, Shogun and Commercial Suicide. Here Kasra picks possibly the cream of the crop with a release that has been hitting clubs hard all over for the past few months. Sometimes the only answer is ‘Mob Justice’. A staggered break, industrial fx and drifting pads open it up with the by now familiar to most ‘hang from the gallows’ vocal that signals the drop into some enormous droning sub-bass with twisted fills and oldskool amen edits. Cuts deep in the mix on any worthy sound system; a Critical anthem for all the Fabric regulars. Flipping over and label boss Kasra joins him in the studio for a joint venture with devastatingly good consequences. Kicking off with a more regular two-step break, piano chords and old soul vox ‘Show You’ rolls into a bouncing stepper with a surging b-line that keeps things moving with pace. One for the marching crew and another good sign of Kasra’s own production progress. Definitely much for to come from in the future from Foreign Concept.

That focus extends itself to the lead track of this release, Adrenalin, which must be the most unashamedly dancefloor Scuba track to date, while b-sides Never and Everywhere take the well-documented fascination with melody that pervaded previous Scuba material to a new level.

SL016 – Josh Money – Let Go With You / The Wrong People – 12″ Vinyl
Currently churning out some of the most fiendishly heavy beats around for EA Games, Floridaís Josh Money’s latest release follows the bassbin-busting Bullet for the Bears, which had bass fiends on both sides of the Atlantic foaming at the mouth with its orchestral breakdowns, gnarly low end and tight-as-all-hell edits. Now he’s back with a double helping of utter carnage for Sludge. First up, Let Go With You drops sumptuous pads, oriental-style synths and slick vocal stylings before dragging you onto the floor with a bassline that feels like waking up to a shot of tequila while being roundly spanked by maniacal goblins from the planet RWOAR. It’s also got enough edits to keep even the most discerning clubber’s brain ticking over at triple-time. Next up, we have something even more repulsively brilliant for you. String arrangements bring AA-side The Wrong People in nicely, before dark orchestral arrangements give way to bubbling beats, searing sawtooth bass and more naughty, trademark edits for one seriously epic chunk of filth. A brace of essential bangers for the discerning modern dubstepper, and a sign that Josh has cemented himself as a producer to watch in 2011 and beyond.

New D&B Releases

SOM012 – State Of Mind – Nil By Ear EP 1 (2X12” & CD Album shrink-wrap bundle) – 12″ Vinyl x 2
2X12” & 11 track CD Album shrink-wrap bundle. Nil by Ear is Sate of Mind’s third studio album, the first two being Take Control (Uprising) & Faster than Light (SOM). This album represents the peak so far of the lads technical skills, its carefully produced from start to finish. Tracks are frequently tied together, and a lot of thought has gone into the flow of the album. This is one that can be listened too from beginning to end, as opposed to a collection of singles. However that doesn’t mean that State of Mind have forgotten about the 3am raver. Almost all of the tracks have all been smashing it up world wide over the last 6 months in their own right.Collaboration wise, the album features several of NZ’s most talented vocalists including Shapeshifter’s P.Digsss, Thomas Oliver, Sacha Vee, Mc Woody & PNC, as well as American singer 3pm. The only production collaborators are Nymfo and DNME. Several other collaborations were planned for the LP, but in the end were unable to fit.  These will be released as bonus tracks.

SOULR049 – Marcus Intalex – 21 [Vinyl Edition] – 12″ Vinyl x 3
The Vinyl version features six D&B tracks on 3×12” Vinyl. From the bright, florescent metallics of ‘Celestial Navigation,’(feat S.P.Y.) through to the darker tinges of the sharp-edged, sparse landscape of ‘Hot Hands.’ D&B gets a slightly more menacing dub makeover, while ‘Paulista’ (feat S.P.Y.) & ‘Wacky Races’ both hold the layered, tightly produced drum programming that Intalex is known for. ‘Meltdown’ is a typically immaculate, roller that stems from collaborating with Calibre. The album’s standout is the beautifully emotive ‘Climbing Up The Walls, which features the vocals of Drum & Bass producer Danny Fierce, and stands as a breathtaking, adventurous take on Radiohead. These tracks are currently being championed by the main beat seekers of D&B such as Radio 1′s Fabio & Grooverider, Hype, Friction, Tony Coleman, Nu Tone. Ant TC1, Andy C.

ADRS004 – Sensa & Haste – The Place / Don’t Forget – 12″ Vinyl
This is quite possibly Audio Danger Records biggest release to date. It features up and coming artists Sensa & Haste (AKA HYBRID MINDS). Sensa has been bubbling under the surface for sometime now and it was only a matter of time before he would be releasing tracks for Audio Danger Records. His skill, along with Haste’s passion for the music shows the pairs diversity in this formidable release. Audio Danger Records are proud to have this pairing on board. The Place oozes with originality and uses simplistic beats and rhythms to create a wonderful abstract piece of Drum and Bass. This track could be played in most sets as it has mass crossover appeal and the concept flows seamlessly throughout. Sensa & Haste (AKA HYBRID MINDS) have truly brought something new to the table. Don’t Forget is a punchy bass-line roller. It uses the straight beats of much of today’s dance floor tracks with a sick bass line that is sure to get any dance floor moving. The groove in this track is what sets it apart from other tracks in its sub genre. The tune is a must for all and Sensa has truly shown his skill in this rolling bass heavy track. Support from UKF, Netsky, Camo & Krooked, Crissy Criss (BBC 1xtra), Utah Jazz, Zen, Savage Rehab, The Risky (DnBArena Podcast), Stanza and many more.

SUBTLE005EP – Nebula – Astral Soul EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Despite the fact that he hadn’t even reached his teenage years around the time of Jungle’s hey-day in the mid nineties, that’s the sound that still influences Nebula (aka Peter Saunders) the most to this day. The “Astral Soul” EP focusses on the atmospheric and meditiative side of Nebula’s production but the breakbeat manipulation and rumbling bass people best know him for are still to the fore. Rough and smooth, ethereal and brutal, fast and slow, the strength of this collection is in the finely balanced juxtapostion of these contrasting elements. While there there is a journey to be made within each track, there is another to be made in traversing the EP as a whole – you might just feel like you’ve reached some far away universe by the end ! Whether it’s the drifting atmosphere and acrobatic amens of “Encounters”, the lush pads and tough beats of “Warm Currents”, the glistening synths and crashing snare-step of “Astral Soul”, the machine-gun rhythms and strings of “Escapsim” or the trippy breakbeats leading you to the “Hidden Oasis”, this is an adventure where horizons are broadened and new discoveries made throughout.

NU12050 – Triad – Crooked – 12″ Vinyl
Normal service is resumed on Nu Directions, returning to 170BPM with an offering from some of the drum & bass scene’s most forward-thinking producers, Triad. Triad is the name given to german duo Henree and Basstikal. Both established producers in their own right, their meeting of minds has given their productions new depth and a totally original approach to drum & bass. Releases on DSM, Critical and Horizons, plus their excellent remix of Omar’s ‘Lay It Down’, have laid the foundations for what is to be a fruitful 2011 for this collaborative project. ‘Crooked’ is a shuffling minimal work-out which uses dense atmospheres and growling bass stabs to create a haunting mood, before breaking into it’s techno fuelled, energy soaked finale. ‘The Puzzle’ again captures Triad’s unique ability to create musical soundscapes. With light snappy beats and deep stirring synths creating a track that sounds as fresh today as it will in 10 years time, future music.

FOKUZLP007S1 – Donnie Dubson – Monday Is The New Sunday Album Sampler – 12″ Vinyl
In the impressive flow of new talent in 2011 on Fokuz recordings we already had the pleasure to present the sound of Brother, Command Strange and Intelligent Manners among others. The next flavour of the funky liquid melting pot called Fokuz Recordings goes by the name Donnie Dubson. Berlin based Irishman Donnie O’Sullivan aka Donnie Dubson started releasing his funky rollers on Have a Break and Influenza Media and already featured on Fokuz on the Chronicles of the Deep LP together with Stunna back in 2007. The Grapefruit / Battlecat release on Influenza Media in 2009 got him a lot of attention and is still heard in dj sets today. This brandnew 12 inch is the sampler for the upcoming debut album called ‘Monday Is The New Sunday’, and is a good taster of what to expect! A – Rolling Roller: As the title suggests this is the roller in its purest form. Light stepping beats full of percussion and a solid deep subbass breathing on the background. Subtle edits, humming vocals and synths going from side to side to take you into a deep trance on the dancefloor. Rolling Roller is featured on Lenzmans Metalheadz podcast 24. B – Grey Jeans: Showing his funky side Donnie is a little hapier on this cut. The beat is heavier than the Rolling Roller, but the vibe is funky and warm. Most def a summer tune for the nicest time of the year! Sing along with the bassline, and make your head nodd.

DMND003 – Heavy1 – Xiphactinus / Xiphactinus (Lenzman Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Proving once and for all that drum & bass is a global movement, here we have a single produced in Japan, A&R’d in Switzerland, remixed in Holland and distributed via the UK across the world. Thankfully the majority of these processes are done via the internet – otherwise we’re sure someone would have something to say about the carbon footprint of this one! Japanese producer Heavy1 takes to the helm for Demand Records’ third release, following two incredible singles featuring music from Spectrasoul, BTK, Nymfo, Lost Sequence and Codeshaper. Here you’re offered no reduction in quality as Heavy1 turns out an impeccable ride through drum & bass territory. Slowly opening with scattered hi hats and punctuating kicks, it’s not long before ‘Xiphactinus’ (a predatory fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous period if, like us, you had no idea what this was…) bares its prehistoric teeth, snapping at you with crisp snares and expertly placed sound effects. Basslines judder and bounce back and forth before engulfing you in their mighty jaws! This is undoubtedly the start of great things for Heavy1. On the flip, Demand enlists yet another well known name to add some remix action to the mix. This time it’s Metalheadz’ Lenzman who steps up, taking ‘Xiphactinus’ down a whole new aesthetic path. Turning a track that holds a brewing, unspoken menace into one with a euphoric edge isn’t an easy task, but Lenzman’s electro leads and warming bass notes manage it effortlessly. With a wave of new material ready for the second half of the year, Demand Records shows no signs of slowing their already incredible pace. Clearly a nomination for one of 2011’s hottest new D&B labels.

CITRUSLP005 – Fourward – Episodes – 12″ Vinyl x 4
The ever on point Citrus Recordings is stepping up for its 5th artist LP. after having released the debut Albums of Mindscape & Jade wich all went on for critical acclaim it’s time for Citrus to get ready for its 3rd Artist Album. This time it’s time for the debut album of ‘Fourward’! Hailing straight from lower Austria the four men collective FOURWARD started out producing music in early 2007. The boys knew each other for quite a while and shared the love and passion for drumandbass music. For them it was always a main issue not to stick to any particular tiny subgenre only, but to develop a sound of their own. All members have different musical backgrounds which fit together perfectly and provide a great studio vibe. Days went by and the boys finished a couple of tunes properly and it wasn’t long until Austrian drumandbass producer duo Body&Soul showed interest in their works. Also international artists like BBCs very own Crissy Criss began to support their music giving them airplay on his radio show. As a result of their effort FOURWARD has released quality tunes on labels like Subsonik Sound, Planet Funk and Fokuz. The year 2010 they experienced the so called ‘breakthrough’ with releases on NASCA Recordings and Fokuz followed by an epic 12inch for the legendary label VIRUS Recordings! The guys definitely didn’t stop there and being on the road now broadened their horizon even further. Resulting in a series of tunes perfectly fitting together in this 4pack 12inch. Diversity and musicallity are keywords for this album. Listen from Low Blow to You and Me, quality drum ‘n bass!!

Jade is one of the world famous Hungarian drum and bass producers, known for his dark and powerful sound. He has been one of the key members in the local and the world wide scene for a decade, first promoting events in his home city – Budapest, soon after getting attention as producer from major dnb labels like BSE and Moving Shadow. He also made an impact on the scene as a DJ, played in most countries of Europe, while travelling on tours to Australia, New Zealand, even Hong Kong, Canada. DISF013 – Youandewan – Youandme (on My Mind) / Zeal – 12″ Vinyl
Next for Disfigured Dubz is the debut single from Leeds based producer Youandewan The story goes that one day whilst relaxing by the pool in Ibiza, Ewan’s manager played some of his demos on the soundsystem with Skream in company and he was gripped, two tracks were signed to Disfigured Dubz and here they are. A: Youandme (On my mind) harks back to the days when 2 Step garage ruled the London airwaves and gives a nostalgic look back to the pre-dubstep revolution. A crackling warm Rhodes loop and atmospheric field recordings warm the cones whilst vocal snippets creep in and float amongst the classic 2 step beats. Tension builds, temperatures rise and the bass blows like a cool breeze on a summer’s afternoon. AA: Zeal is the perfect complement to the A-side. Again with the winning combo of Rhodes piano, soulful vocals, snapping 2 step beats and glittering effects that bring the feel good factor to a maximum. This one just oozes sunshine.

3024012 – Addison Groove – It’s Got Me / Minutes Of Funk – 12″ Vinyl
In which 3024′s West Country takeover continues unabated with Addison Groove as one of 2010′s most celebrated Producers fires off a pair of brand new exclusives. ‘It’s Got Me’ drags a cornerstone of classic hip hop into the 21st century with trademark spasmodic Chicago drum acrobatics and vocal splicing working the track into a frenzy while his less acknowledged way with gauzy analogue textures never allow things to slip into the trap of dance floor bludgeon. Minutes Of Funk dials back the ferocity just enough to open up extra space for more luxurious synth washes and increasingly intricate rhythmic shifts as interlocking traces of dance floor past combine to form the thinking mans set opener.

PHREAKS024 – Genetix & Persist – Beast Mode – 12″ Vinyl
Genetix are back with an EP that will rattle your chest with bass and make your head explode. I can confirm, this has happened too many of my friends and has got me in a great deal of trouble. “Beast Mode”, my pick of the lot, is a collaboration with Persist and is an absolute assault of disgusting basslines, switches and filthy beats produced at the highest end. Then “Termination” and “Stealth” offer up more terrifying, futurist and hard edged Dubstep that is certainly not for anyone with a heart condition. Strictly dance floor bizzle!

ZAUDIO023 – Depone – Test Me – 12″ Vinyl
Yes yes people, we are back!! It’s been a while, but we are going to be hitting you with some seriously good tunes this year, so watch this space. Anyway, on to the music ;) If you like you tunes big fat and heavy like an elephant on steroids, then get ready for an absolute pasting from new boy on the circuit, Depone! Depone is a producer that has really caught our ear at the Z Audio towers of late and when you hear these tunes, I’m sure you’ll understand why. All 3 tunes are fierce, dirty, gritty, disgusting and overall very well produced. The great thing about Depone is that he manages to create in your face music without pointlessly wobbling the LFO filter. There’s some real depth to this young talent and I’m sure you’ll be hearing some more great music from Depone in the very near future.

New D&B CD

SOULR050 – Marcus Intalex – 21 – CD x 2
The album features all colours and textures of the electronic sphere, from the bright, florescent metallics of ‘Celestial Navigation’ (feat S.P.Y.) through to the darker tinges of the sharp‐edged, sparse landscape of ‘Hot Hands.’ His D&B mastery is constant throughout on ‘Make A Raise’ (with the vocals of reggae legend Ras Tweed), D&B gets a slightly more menacing dub makeover, while ‘Paulista’ holds the layered, tightly produced drum programming that Intalex is known for, and ‘Meltdown’ is a typically immaculate, deep roller that stems from collaborating with Calibre. Yet elegant productions like ‘Dusk’ show his ability to create spacious downtempo sound worlds. The acid ‐drenched ‘TB or Not TB’ is filled with analogue 303 stabs that give a nod back to his first love: the early sounds of Chicago and Detroit in the late 80s. The album shifts between moods and character with each distinctive track, especially on his collaborations with equally charisma producers like the bright, uplifting zig zags of ‘Strangeways’ with Zed Bias, or the full sheets of bass on his moody collaboration with Nonplus+ vocalist Riya, ‘Regrets.’ The album’s standout is the beautifully emotive ‘Climbing Up The Walls, which features the vocals of Drum & Bass producer Danny Fierce, and stands as a breathtaking, adventurous take on Radiohead. These tracks are currently being championed by the main beat seekers of the global bass music, such as Radio 1′s Fabio & Grooverider, & Benji B, plus DJ’s Alexander Nut, Ben UFO, Loefah, Martyn, Scuba, Oneman and 2562.

SOMCD002 – State of Mind – Nil by Ear – CD
Nil by Ear is Sate of Mind’s third studio album, the first two being Take Control (Uprising) & Faster than Light (SOM). This album represents the peak so far of the lads technical skills, its carefully produced from start to finish. Tracks are frequently tied together, and a lot of thought has gone into the flow of the album. This is one that can be listened too from beginning to end, as opposed to a collection of singles. However that doesn’t mean that State of Mind have forgotten about the 3am raver. Almost all of the tracks have all been smashing it up world wide over the last 6 months in their own right. Collaboration wise, the album features several of NZ’s most talented vocalists including Shapeshifter’s P.Digsss, Thomas Oliver, Sacha Vee, Mc Woody & PNC, as well as American singer 3pm. The only production collaborators are Nymfo and DNME. Several other collaborations were planned for the LP, but in the end were unable to fit.  These will be released as bonus tracks. There will be strictly limited number of CD/EP shrink-wrap bundles, and a follow up EP including some remixes and some more album cuts. Check out youtube.com/stateofmindnz for videos, trailers, and generally interesting stuff.

New D&B Releases

DETAIL005 – Lynx & Hellrazor / Lynx Ft. Spikey Tee – Dirty Red / 5am Soul City – 12″ Vinyl
Detail 005 is the next single from label boss Lynx. Dirty Red is a bit of a monster and has been getting huge support from Marky, Marcus Intalex, Nu:Tone Bailey and Shy FX. The intro builds with sci fi strings that progress like a train hurtling down the tracks out of control. It reaches a crescendo with the sound of squealing brakes and drops into a menacing talk box bassline and Lynx’s sharp 2 step beats. 5.a.m Soul City is a collaboration between Lynx and London born, Sydney based soul vocalist, Spikey Tee. The track has the vibe of walking through the backstreets of a city in the early hours of the morning. Subdued chords, scattered pianos and rustles of the streets and distant cars litter this liquid vocal track.

RECIPE016 – Mute & Mako – Astral Transmissions / Lost Sector – 12″ Vinyl
Mute & Mako are a collective from Bristol. Having spent years working on their sound & building their own label Utopia Music, they have plenty of good tunes at the ready. “Astral Transmissions” is a throwback to Fellowship late 90’s era. A sublime track that takes you somewhere, lush and hypnotic. “Lost sector” is a different flex, with dark pads, off-beat grooves & some oldskool Ram trilogy style bass! DJ support comes from Spectrasoul, Break, Fabio, Nu:Tone, Nymfo, Hazard, Makoto, Flight, London Elektricity, Blu Mar Ten, Dj Lee, Doc scott. Press: Mixmag, IDJ, ATM, Kmag. DIS043 – Cern & Dabs / Dabs & Safire – Oh The Horror / Back & Forth – 12″ Vinyl
Dispatch are chuffed to present a truly international 12″ with 3 producers cross-collaborating worldwide to present this powerful bass heavy release. We start on the A-side with arguably New Zealand’s finest export Cern collaborating with wonder kid Dabs hailing from Italy, they both provide some real dance floor power in the form of “Oh the Horror”. Dabs then works his way back over to the other side of the globe Australia bound to work alongside rising talent Safire! They both bring us a modern day roll-out “Back and Forth” on the flip… To make this story even more hard to explain the 2 tracks ended up on a UK based label however as far as we saw it the instant we heard these 2 tracks we had to make sure Dispatch would become their home. Huge support from the likes of Rockwell (both tracks featured on Shogun Ministry radio show), AI, Ant TC1, Spectrasoul (Shogun Ministry radio show), Dose, Octane & DLR, Survival, BTK, Doc Scott, Kasra, Judda, Nymfo, Teebee and more.

DISLPLTD001 – Skeptical & MC Fokus / Ant TC1 – Structure / Mode Destruction – 10″ Vinyl
The A side of this release features a track from the CD & MP3 release of the Dispatch ‘Transit One’ album – Skeptical & MC Fokus’s “Structure”; this is a track we received many emails and messages from quite simply asking “why is this not on vinyl” (along with other album tracks being referenced that did not appear as part of the vinyl package), the volume of differing requests led us to decide quite simply to put it to the vote and along with some help from K-Mag, Soundcloud and a mass of public votes here is the winning result pressed on to the a-side of this limited 10″ vinyl. On the flip we’ve got something completely fresh from label man Ant TC1 in the shape of the track “Mode Destruction” which is best explained as minimal but devastating when played loud! Enjoy.

New Bass Music CD

NONPLUSCD002 – LOL – Me Me – CD
LOL is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one) They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

New Bass Music releases

PPRO14VSY – Photek – 101 (Boddika Remix) / This City – 12″ Vinyl
Full colour sleeve pressed on 180 gram Vinyl. Regarded by many as the finest electronic producer of his generation, the mysterious LA-based Photek enjoyed considerable success throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium with his own mutant breed of jungle and drum’n’bass. After a four-year hiatus from releasing music (and just over ten years since his last LP ‘Solaris’), the legendary Photek is back with a new sound and brand new 4-track EP – an occasion definitely worth the wait. Never one to stand still, Photek’s enviable reputation has been built not just on his ability to inspire both his fans and peers over the years through his productions but also through his knack of reinventing his sound time and time again. With his early work (under a variety of aliases) proving hugely popular in clubs, it wasn’t until ’97 when he released his now-classic debut album ‘Modus Operandi’ that he truly arrived, defying both his existing fan base and the Jungle scene as he pioneered a new alternative to the big room rollers that defined the era at that time. Three years later he surprised again, embracing Chicago acid-house and techno for his second artist album ‘Solaris’ in 2000, working with the brilliant Robert Owens on the classic single ‘Mine To Give’. Further EP’s followed after the turn of the millennium, as well as a number of film score credits (including The Matrix), but in 2011 he has once again shifted the gears, re-inspired by UK bass music and the current crop of young producers – Photek has a new sound to share with the world. Multiple Radio Plays by: Benji B, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Mistajam, Nick Grimshaw, Greenmoney, Jon Kennedy.

3024011 – Julio Bashmore – Batty Knee Dance / Ribble To Amazon – 12″ Vinyl
Two brand new tracks from Bristol’s emergent House prodigy. Batty Knee Dance brings ultra syncopated 808′s, neurotic synths and a mournful vocal refrain together in a tightly packaged low drag configuration. Ribble To Amazon maintains the levels of 808 astro physics but heads for the great outdoors with subtly staggered pads and an impossibly delicate Lepidopteran melody basking in a 16:9 sunset. Exclusive to the digital Grand National winds down with wistful synth trumpets and a rhythmic strut perfectly aligned with the greatest roller disco ever.

DP051 – Antiserum – Zephyr / Purple & Gold – 12″ Vinyl
San Francisco-based producer Antiserum steps up for Dub Police with two unique collaborations, featuring local producers Ill-Esha and 12th Planet respectively. His music is a masterfully crafted fusion of influences that results in a sound entirely his own, balancing light against dark and colour against pure bass pressure. Showcasing a deft musicality as well as an unrivalled talent for system shaking productions, Antiserum is taking the scene by storm. Releases on Narco.Hz, S.C.U.M and Argon amongst others have already propelled him to the forefront of the rapidly growing American dubstep scene, with plenty more still to come. On the A side, he is joined by Ill-Esha on ‘Zephyr’, a sick g-funk inflected roller. Skittering hi-hats and tough drums lay the foundations on this one, with the deep, smooth bass sweeping underneath. The vibrant synths weave in and out of each other with ease, swimming around the mix and swelling expansively through the speakers. On the flip he teams up with 12th Planet on the massive ‘Purple & Gold’. The g-funk influences continue to flow through this track, pinned down by a hard bassline and taut drums. The shimmering synths sliding over the top of the percussion and off into the atmosphere give the track an epic stop-in-your-tracks effect.

CIV019 – Om Unit – The Timps EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following his prized Joker rework, his inclusion on the hefty Fabric-curated ‘Elevator Music’ comp, his dope 7″ for the All City crew, and Corridor EP on Plastician’s Terrorhythm imprint – not to mention a slew of remixes – Om Unit joins the Civil Music stable alongside Starkey, Reso, dÉbruit, Drums of Death and Darling Farah. And yet again we see him pushing his sonic manifesto ever further. With years of working intently at the nexus of instrumental beats and electronic music, it’s time for The Timps EP. The Timps is Real Electro. Faceless, percussive, underground with a sci-fi feel. Dark, futuristic and dancefloor-oriented, punctuated with elements of 80’s Detroit Techno. Om Unit has blasted his sound into deep space, adding eerie electronic futurism to his niche blend of slow boogie, house, techno and hip-hop beats with those classic analogue synth lines. It nods to both the ever exciting and forever morphing instrumental beat scene and to the heavy flow of early pioneering Detroit techno via UR and the likes of Drexciya/Aux 88. The Timps sees Om Unit interfacing funk and futurism. Analogue bass lines are sequenced, arpeggiated and twisted to devastating effect. Synthetic riffs and atonal sound effects with heavy reverbs, delays and phasers drift along with eerie synthetic strings emphasizing the retro futuristic themes of the music. Remixes come from Frite Nites’ US beat maker and a one-to-watch in 2011, Salva, and Wagon Repair’s Hrdvsion aka Nathan Jonson who, along with brother, Matthew, is part of North American Techno’s first family. Salva’s rework of Prawn Cocktail pulses and throbs towards its intergalactic destination, with beats that speed along with accelerating urgency. Hrdvsion on the other hand takes The Timps and disconnects completely to float off alone into deep space with his epic, eerie and atomspheric reworking. This is Electro. Real Electro. Moody, minimal and 25 years on.

SCREW005 – Gatekeeper – Rawtones / Ignite (Ft. Grilza & Dread) – 12″ Vinyl
Gatekeeper (A.k.A William Scott Cree) has been a fundamental part of the dubstep scene ever since it all began many years ago. He has played all over Europe, collaborated with headhunter, statix & komonazmuk (to name a few!) He’s been a part of the infamous ‘Hench’, released tunes on ‘if symptoms persists’ and now joins the unstoppable force that is Screwloose records. Screwloose are proud to announce that the long awaited ‘raw tones’ and ‘ignite’ will be seeing a vinyl release within the first quarter of 2011. Both tunes have been supported by the likes of chase & status, jakes and Mary Anne Hobbs; who played it on her radio one show various times. Gatekeeper describes his sound to be somewhere between dubstep and grime but still keeping it within the ‘Bristol sound’ and that’s exactly what he has achieved with both these massive releases. ‘Raw tones’ consists of unique sounding drums, dark bass lines and moody atmospheres, where as ‘Ignite’ boasts the classic gatekeeper sound and vocals from the infamous ‘Dread Mc’ and local hero ‘Grillza’. He’s kept his head low and his style underground, but gatekeeper continues to amaze us with his production and is backing down easily!

KOKESHI005 – Irrelevant ft. Brad Sucks – Better Off In Me (Original / Calibre Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Limted white Vinyl pressing. Featured on the Kokeshi ((pod)) Kasts, Irrelevant’s ‘Better Off in Me’ has been one of the most asked about tracks featured on the label’s podcast series. A futuristic garage / dubstep / electronica /whatever tune with potential mainstream crossover, this is just a sample of what’s to come from Irrelevant’s debut LP coming out later this year. When thinking who best to remix a tune of this potential, Kokeshi thought only the king of melancholia himself, Calibre could suit such a touching track. The brief for Calibre was only to keep it at a similar BPM..and the result is a tune unlike anything Calibre has done before..with the 2-step Garage feel to it, its sure to be a hit on both the Radio and the Club circuit. BRK018 – Aleks Zen – High Life / Pimp Shoes – 12″ Vinyl
For Berkane Sol 18 we present the vinyl debut of the hugely talented Aleks Zen. He calls his outfit ‘Neon Bounty’ and its easy to hear why. His brightly coloured music is like the soundtrack to a thrill seekers ride through the downtown areas of a tropical metropolis – sensuous but edgy, and properly booming on the right kind of car stereo. His riddims are propulsive and a joy to dance to, bringing together the best aspects of both house and dubstep. Melodically these tunes feel like the emotions of classic West Coast g-funk filtered through the mongrel mindset of the current UK bass music scene. Or as Aleks puts it himself – “I’ve been on hip-hop, grime, house and dubstep, now I’m trying to to create my own musical paradigm that still relates to people’s earthly emotions”. Pimp Shoes is maybe the best example of this – sometimes it feels just like an upbeat oldskool computer game theme, but then it evolves through some highly accomplished and unexpected key changes that put it in a whole new category.

CHST011 – Distance – Falling Ft. Alys Be – 12″ Vinyl
Chestplate a label set up with the intention of showcasing the freshest of Distance’s own productions which have been destroying dances and flooring radio listeners ever since. After just a handful of releases it is already established as one of the increasingly few, ‘buy-on-sight’ dubstep labels. Highlights of his production repertoire include ‘V’; a track as heavy as 100 ten tonne trucks that pounds and stomps, crunches and growls. Now for number 11 another Distance classic, ‘Feel Me’, oozes something far less overtly aggressive; all motorik hypnotik groove and ring modulated synth squeel. For the heads don’t sleep on the evil Malice on the flip. Distance’s studio has spawned multiple stone cold killers over a range of styles but all uniquely Distance, highlighting why his new releases are some of the most highly anticipated in the scene.

New D&B Releases

DSM017 – Nether – True Believer / True Believer (Marcus Intalex’s Dancehall Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
The Deep Soul Music mission of releasing high quality drum & bass continues with this the 17th vinyl release. Australian Nether has already graced DSM twice with the laid back grooves of ‘Lust’, which featured on the ‘Intelligent Systems Volume One EP’, and ‘Skeletons’, which was included in the exclusive DSM x Lacoste project. With Marcus Intalex on remix duties for the AA side, this is one very special slice of wax. This 12” is an important milestone for DSM. It lays down a marker and is a signal of intent that Deep Soul Music is no longer a fledgling label fighting to gain recognition and acceptance within drum & bass. Rather, it has grown to be one of d&b’s leading lights, one of the most respected labels within the global scene, and a point of reference and inspiration for the multitude of other dj’s, producers and labels currently operating in the genre. With their place at drum & bass’s top table now secure, and with a close working relationship developed with a group of exceptionally talented artists such as Anile, Sam KDC,Synth Sense, Triad and June Miller, the only way for DSM is up. The AA side sees the Soul:R boss and all round round drum & bass legend flip things 180 degrees for his remix. The abstract, almost introspective feel of the original is removed in favour of straight up feel good summer time dancefloor vibes. Big bouncy bass stabs and a crisp rolling drum break aim the tune firmly at the ravers and its been a firm favourite of many an a-lister over the past few months looking to amp up the vibes and energy levels of their sets.

Spirit himself gets deep and dirty on ‘Juggernaut’ with it’s sparse drums, deep subs and growling synths, creating a groove that just can’t be stopped…. DJ Mag 9/10

The future looks bright, this is just the beginning… Audio – Fire In The Sky Fresh from finishing his debut LP for Ed Rush & Optical’s legendary Virus imprint, Audio turns his hand to something very special and unique for his debut outing on Rise Audio. Fire In The Sky is pure drum and bass. Audio’s razor sharp drums draw you into a thought-provoking groove from which there is no return. A thumping kick and distinct solid snare start you off on a journey of sound laced with eerie sci-fi samples and exceptional drum fills. As the drums progress through the intro, classic rave stabs steadily start to build enticing the bass to drop! Audio doesn’t disappoint and sets out to destroy everything with one of his heaviest and most twisted bass lines yet Now in full swing, raw distorted sub bass growls and manoeuvres it’s way through the track working with the drums, fills and edits until the classic rave stabs return in full force. Allied – N-Sphere One of the hottest duos in the game Allied present ‘N-Sphere’, a track that has recently been causing serious damage to dance floors around the globe. Following the critical acclaim for their outstanding tracks on KKS Black, Sinuous and DJ Traces infamous DSCI4 imprint, these guys are on fire! RECIPE017 – Dub Phizix – Out There / Athos – 12″ Vinyl
Dub Phizix is a fresh name for 2011. His unique style has won over many people including Soul:r & Creative Source with whom he has 12”s coming soon. His punchy production and clever arrangement impressed us at Ingredients and these two tracks have been on heavy rotation for the last 6 months. “Out There” is reminiscent of Photek’s drums and sounds, a great intro track. While “Athos” is a brave tune, some future thinking drum & bass with it’s tribal rhythms. Doc Scott “5/5 great stuff” S.P.Y “Big things!” John B “Nice work” DJ support: Hazard, Spectrasoul, Ulterior Motive, Krust, Doc scott, Rockwell, Dj Lee, Jubei, Digital, Klute, Spirit, Genotype, Skeptical.

CRIT054 – S.P.Y & Kasra – Surface / Control – 12″ Vinyl
Well it’s been a long time coming but finally Critical label boss and all-round entertainer Kasra has put hand to mixing desk and delivered his first full 12” release on the imprint since it began back in 2002. No only that but he’s done it with one of the most prolific and hot property names in the scene right now, Brazilian born S.P.Y. The result as you’d expect is pure D&B thunder! ‘Surface’ rolls out seriously from the off with a snapping two-step break accompanied by paranoid pads that drift throughout the mix as an unnerving vox drops us suddenly into this no-nonsense Friday night king of the rollers. Torpedo bass stabs rule as it marches along with full force to a deep, intense breakdown that signals the second drop into a more twisted incarnation of the b-line before. Dangerous, cavernous drum & bass from two people with their fingers firmly on the pulse. Moving on and ‘Control’ is a menace from the start with a drawn out intro that sets us up perfectly for the incoming onslaught. A heavily syncopated break leads the way much like a slice of classic Photek brought smack up to date for 2011, whilst undulating bass hits make sure this one never lets go, kicking and scrapping right to the very end. Another very naughty release for the Critical empire. DJ support from Hype, Friction, Jubei, Fabio, Marky, Kasra, S.P.Y. and many more.

HENCH023 – MRK1 – Dirty Dubstep Music – 12″ Vinyl
Having been perfecting his production skills for the last 10 years, Mrk 1 is no newcomer to the world of bass-led music. A member of Manchester’s infamous ‘Virus Syndicate’, he’s become internationally recognised as a huge dubstep talent. So when HENCH got the opportunity, they jumped at the chance to sign two typically down-right dark and dirty numbers from the man like Mrk 1… A. DIRTY DUBSTEP MUSIC ‘I want girls, drink, drugs and music’ aren’t the type of lyrics you’re going to find on a Cliff Richard record. And this track is about as far away as you can get from that! Get ready for a relentlessly switching bass rhythm that takes you every which way direction. The vibe on this production is one of darkest dread and fits perfectly at home in a dark & dingy club at some ungodly hour of the morning. Mrk 1 has carefully crafted space around the bass-riff to make sure that nothing takes away from it hitting you where it hurts. AA. SHOUT Mrk 1 guides us in with an innocent facade; a playful vocal coupled with a light-tempoed high hat. But as things draw nearer to the drop the creeping low-end in the background makes it clear that other intentions are in mind. When that twisted bassline drops ‘Shout’ takes on a far more forbidding atmosphere. Mrk 1 has created something that bass-heads have been swinging from the rafters for every time, screaming for the rewind. Take heed of our words when we tell you that ‘Shout’ is going to cause damage!

OTE014 – Indigo – Zero Point E.P. – 12″ Vinyl x 2
On the Edge are back with a new EP from Indigo! He first made his debut for On the Edge early 2009 with a collaboration with Synkro called “Alabama” and “Turning”. Then Indigo went on to produce 2 solo singles for On the Edge 8 and 9 that I would describe as true masterpieces. Dubby, Techno, industrial and gritty to the core! If you haven’t checked any of those releases out, then I would say “Not Alone”, “Home” and “Cosmos” are all well worth a listen. He is one of the most talented producers I have ever heard and extremely diverse in production styles. He never sticks to formulas and his musical knowledge and passion for diversity really shines though in his music. “Zero point” is a mix of wonderfully produced soundscapes that show us what Indigo is all about. DJ Support: Scuba, Russell Deeks , D Bridge , Reso , Spam Chop, DFRNT, Rob Booth Walsh, Dj Rum Distal, Truth.

SMOKE013 – Lewis B – Dark Coulds – 12″ Vinyl
If you’re into a bit of Dubstep with a Jazzy twist, then I’m sure Lewis B is a name that you’re very familiar with. It’s a style of Dubstep that is really taking shape and Lewis is riding that ever increasing moment that surrounds this beautiful sound. Lewis has such a deep knowledge of Jazz, ranging from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Wes Montgomery, all the way to the more modern twist on Jazz, like Jazzanova and Quantic. “Dark Clouds” screams out Lewis B and reminds me a little of “Pinball”, but in so many ways extremely different and unique. Then we have Synkro on the remix duties, but a first for Smokin Sessions, it’s a D+B remix!!!! The sound seems to amalgamate genres where BPM are merely a speed, but has a definite distinct flavor. I think its such a refreshing sound and love the minimal deepness that the genre brings to electronic music. DJ Support: D Bridge, LTJ Bukem, DFRNT, Dj Rum Reso Loxy, Alexander Nut, 16bit, Pathaan, Tayo, Kissy Sell out, Shimon, Distal, Rob Booth, Freq Nasty, DJ Flight, Nerm (BBC Radio 1) and Akira Kiteshi!

RED004 – Ruckspin – Shikra / Blessings (feat. J. Sparrow) – 12″ Vinyl
RED004 is finally here and it’s a absolute stomper of a release and one we are very proud to get out there! Ruckspin is a well respected musician within the dubstep scene and has had plenty of releases on a plethora of quality labels. We here feel this release encapsulates his own sound fully! A. SHIKRA A tight 4/4 kick starts things off with little subtle fills in the drums keep the momentum of the tune before a huge, punishing sub takes this tune to another level. A tune that has been in very high demand within the scene this past year.. if you’ve been out, you’ve more than likely heard it! Proper dancefloor punisher! AA. BLESSINGS [ft. J. SPARROW] A tune that has also been in high demand with additional production from another wizard ‘J. Sparrow’. You can definitely hear Sparrow’s influence on this one with it’s heavy dub vibes. Intricate percussion, heavy sub bass and vibes thick as molasses!

ORCA003 – XI – Medicate / Gamma Rain – 12″ Vinyl
Following the huge success of Hyetal’s release, Orca Recordings is back to deliver its highly anticipated third instalment; this time XI is back to deliver a 12” solely featuring his own productions. It has been a whirlwind year for XI, with the success of ‘The Ghost’ on Orca capturing the attention of many of the scene’s tastemakers including Mary Anne Hobbs, Loefah and many others. With his new outing on Orca, XI’s musical style has evolved considerably to incorporate a whole new set of influences and ideas. Having been part of the sound design team for Scion’s latest advertisement campaign and toured extensively through North America, we’re proud to announce that the tracks to be released in the Orca series are ‘Gamma Rain’ and ‘Medicate’. ‘Gamma Rain’ is arguably XI’s boldest attempt at production so far, drawing influence from synth-heavy Crunk music and the experimental nature of Jazz. The infectious melody of the saxophone, alongside bright stuttering-synths and energetic percussion make the track perfect for the dance floor whilst still retaining its musical integrity. On the flip, ‘Medicate’ carries a completely different vibe, focusing on an intense and brooding atmosphere beautifully composed by XI. The darkness of the deep, driving midrange bass is meticulously balanced by the drunken swing of the synth melody, underpinned by a spacious drum beat. This track is undoubtedly going be a hit with lovers of all different genres of dance music.

NL008 – Kevin McPhee – Get In With You EP – 12″ Vinyl
Blue 12″ transparent vinyl Next up is a 12″ by Kevin McPhee, which features am LV remix of Kevin’s “Get In With You.” His drum work also shouts just as loud as his twisted use of vocal snippets and samples with the ‘Bridges’ being a great example of what we’re attempting to shout about. Constructed from homespun and self recorded samples it traverses a drum pattern not a million miles away from the work of Mount Kimbie, but focuses a little harder on the punch of the kick drum, using those bitcrushed scratches and ticks around it to frame the resonance of the low frequencies. http://www.sonicrouter.com/2011/01/interview-kevin-mcphee-nakedlunchidle-hands/ [nakedlunch] is one of the more mysterious and quite frankly fascinating labels to emerge in the post-structural era of ‘bass music.’ The Irish imprint sets itself apart not through exclusive signings or big, hyped-up releases but rather through an uncompromising aesthetic that lies dormant in each stunning record. The sound of [nakedlunch] is definitively nocturnal, somnambulant, bloodshot, and edgy; there’s a profound restlessness at the heart of each twelve, where the most aggressive and masculinized moments are treated with crippling paralysis or the prettiest moments are coloured by a sense of cornering, overwhelming dread. http://ftrprf.blogspot.com/2011/02/nakedlunch.html

IME025 – Outboxx – Kate Libby’s / Bertie’s Groove – 12″ Vinyl
The first Immerse release of 2011 sees the label taking on a fresh approach while retaining the same atmospherics that have made it an essential fixture in the Bristol music canon. Outboxx are made up of Jacob Martin and Matt Lambert, and their sound is rooted in groovy, analogue house music. With an emphasis on jamming, there’s a loose, live feel to these tracks that has an instant appeal but drags you deeper with each listen. ‘Kate Libby’ kicks off on a swung beat and warm pads, before dropping down to P-funk bass and sparse synth flourishes. ‘Bertie’s Groove’ places jazzy Rhodes playing at the front of the mix with a classic drum machine workout ticking away in the background. This is soulful, authentic house music with not a clinical MIDI pattern in earshot. Despite coming from a different angle, the Outboxx tracks slip neatly into the Immerse legacy thus far, pointing the way for a year filled with more of the spacious, haunting club music the label has become renowned for.

Part 1 contains the epic title track ‘Cerebral’.. this one has been a regular in sets from Youngsta from day dot.. The second you hear it you know who.. Eerie.. Dark.. And loads of subs.. This track will remind you a lot of Ed Rush & Optical in their Wormhole faze just taken back to the 140 bpm range. Side B features ‘Memory Loss’ a bulldozer like roller that packs a punch like Mike Tyson. A tune that embodies Seven’s sound like no other.. No joking around and just straight pressure business.. Once this one kicks in you know it’s time to get serious. Hold tight for part 2 of Seven’s Cerebral EP which will feature Seven teaming up with some of his trusty friends.

CRIT052 – Enei, Eastcolors & Noel – Cracker / Danger Dance – 12″ Vinyl
Critical Music marches forward, tapping into yet more new talent for 2011 resulting in an absolutely filthy D&B excursion that has had the likes of Andy C going ballistic for it. Hailing from Russia, Enei, who has already bagged himself an exclusive album deal with Critical, Eastcolors and Noel may be familiar with a few but with this release they look set to cement themselves in the collective consciousness of drum & bass aficionados the world over. ‘Cracker’ is rough, rugged and very, very raw. Ultra-tech D&B could be the term to use as the trio of producers come together to deliver what could possibly even be one of Critical’s biggest releases to date. Full of sick mid-ranges, snapping drums and sneaking subs, this one is cold, dry and full of funk that’ll have people full-on skanking around clubs until the early hours. Absolute gold. Enei then goes it alone on the more experimental ‘Danger Dance’, that intros with a sparse arrangement of stalking pads and fx that set the mood of unrest. In bounces a low-slung bass and it’s away we go on this gorgeously glitchy, 808-laden ride that sits perfectly alongside the likes of Rockwell and indeed Critical. DJ support from Andy C, Alix Perez, Friction, Icicle, Cyantific, Nu:tone, Logistics, Rockwell, Lenzman, Hype, Jubei, Ulterior Motive and more.

SYNDROME017 – Billain – Probes / Horus 8 – 12″ Vinyl
Just imagine if you could take cells from any producer in the world and mix them up to create your own super producer who whould it be? Well if by any chance the combo you want would look something like, Spor, Phace, Noisia, Mayhem with a dash of Misanthrop then you’re in luck.. Cause that super producer is Billain. Hear his Vinyl debut here on Syndrome Audio with the astonishing tracks Probes & Horus 8. Probes sounds like a mutant cyborg that’s reprogramming your brain with its razor sharp beats and unpredictable mid range. If you listen to this big time production when you know why we call him the super producer. Inspired by the greats of twisted funk and now ready to compete in the big game that is DnB. Horus 8 is trash in every sense of the word. Dirty festering bass lines roam around this track like buzzards circling a dead pray.. They wait until you can’t anymore and then strike to deliver the final blow.. Billain is a deadly producer you should keep your eyes on.. If you can’t hear it in this release then this kind of dnb just isn’t for you.

New D&B Promos

CRIT053 – Seba & Paradox Ft. Kirsty Hawkshaw – The Light / As If – 12″ Vinyl
As we approach spring, the seasonal turn brings with it an uplifting release set to be essential listening for all the eardrums still recovering from the dance-floor damage committed in the darker months. This release hails from Seba and Paradox, no strangers to the d&b circuit, as Critical Music outputs two stunning tracks prepping us for the warm sun-shining days to soon come. Courtesy of Kirsty Hawkshaw, ‘The Light’s beautiful vocals soothe away those frostbitten blues from former months; they swathe around blissful old-school piano keys, breaking through layers and rising over irresistibly smooth drum patterns. A deep bass-line unexpectedly makes an appearance, underlining the evocative summertime goodness – with this aurally euphoric track you can almost taste the blue skies. Seba and Paradox dig deep underground and unleash the dirt on the flip with a jungle-tech tour de force in the shape of ‘As If’. An ominous intro erupts into coarse drum patterns, enveloped by dirty bass that’s just downright mean. A straight-up dance-floor box-ticker, this is a track of volcanic proportions. Beware the explosion!

A : Counterstrike & Forbidden Society – Extreme ( Current Value RMX ) A powerful half beat tune full of metal kicks, a masterpiece in the sense of drum editing. DVA007 – GuGu / Scratcha DVA – The Afro Cuban EP – 12″ Vinyl
The seventh release on DVA records comes from a young, unknown resident of Manchester named GuGu. Staying true to the DVA style, his two tracks are fine examples of todays hybrid Funky House scene, maintaing the 4 to the floor drum patterns whilst drawing on a wide range influences… and as it suggests in the EP’s title, is packed full of Cuban flava. Straight up music designed to make people dance. It wouldn’t be right to get a DVA release without a feature from the man himself, Rinse Fm’s Grimey Breakfast show host Mr Scratcha DVA. As a slight deviation from the norm – and in a way a return to the styles his earlier production – DVA lays down a heavyweight slice of synth laden half step, defiantely one to pull your dirty face too. Check it out and get back to us with your thoughts.

HF026 – Sepalcure – Fleur EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following the release of their stunning summer debut EP ‘Love Pressure’, Sepalcure – a Brooklyn-based duo composed of Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma – have announced their second EP featuring four brand new cuts, due for release in late January 2011 on Hotflush Recordings. Having produced for years individually as Machinedrum (LuckyMe) and Praveen (of Praveen & Benoît), their new collaboration breathes a new life of its own, reflected in its distinctive, lush sonic warmth and a refreshing style of composition that is as equally fitting on the dancefloor as it is in the comfort of one’s home. The Fleur EP shows a progression of Sepalcure’s depth of field, weaving distant chords, soulful vocals, and organic rhythms into vibrant, immersive soundscapes, with echoes of house, techno, and dubstep within. Be it the gentle melodies of “Fleur”, the ascendant effervescence of “Your Love”, the relentless bass of “No Think”, or the suspending ambience of “Inside”, it is a sound that is unmistakably Sepalcure. Their live performances have been gaining steam over the last year, beginning with appearances at Unsound Festival, Dub War NYC, and The Bunker, followed by a live showcase at Portland’s Decibel Festival in September, they are set to embark on their first European tour with other Hotflush artists this December. They have also composed an original track in Darren Aronofsky’s new film Black Swan, in theatres starting December 2010.

THIN16 – Funckarma – Dubstoned 5 EP – 12″ Vinyl
As we’ve been stalking the Funckens for ten years now, after stumbling upon their parts series on DUB when we were still students, trekking religiously to the Sirius on weekends, eventually spending nights in bus shelters to assist to half a live in a school that only served wine, and trying to organise a bash with them in a squat that burned down a week before the bash, before finally inviting them to an exhibition closing party that incidentally marked the beginning of Thin Consolation, they seemed an obvious choice for a release for the tenth anniversary of UNREzT and the fifth of Thin Consolation. Having already graced Thin Consolation with an album in 2006 as Dif:use (with long-time partner Cor Bolten), this time we requested from them a 12″ of a more step-ish inspiration, the fifth in the Dubstoned series, the previous editions having been released on Highpoint Lowlive, Ad Noiseam and Eat Concrete. In so many words, the Dubstoned series is the last major electronic musical genre to have appeared – Dubstep – to be given the special Funcken treatment: a dark and brooding, dub-flavoured electronica. Not for the faint hearted. Mepeche is co-produced by Phinx, and Spectrum is a remix of a track by Eedl, released on the album ‘Everse’, on the Barcelona-based label spa.RK.

a1 Funckarma – Mepeche
a2 Funckarma – Mako
b1 Funckarma – Spectrum
b2 Funckarma – Removal

HDB049 – Funkystepz – Fuller / Hurrican Riddim – 12″ Vinyl
Funkystepz are a collective of house producers from North London, with a show on Rinse FM and a string of self-released underground hits under their belts. They’re definitely some of the producers to watch out for this year. After a period of trial and testing on dubplate by DJs like Kode9 and Marcus Nasty, this first release for Hyperdub doesn’t mess about. ‘Fuller’ is a dancefloor destroyer of a very British vintage. Hard without being rigid, with a cold, elastic sense of melody that bounces and snaps around the midrange between the bass and snares. Tempered by an occasional organ stab, it’s one of those tracks that will lively up any club straight away, doing away with the forced euphoria of a lot of contemporary dance music, and instead honing the harder-to-master skill of energetic intensity and building anticipation. ‘Hurricane Riddim’ takes the listener through a number of contrasting moods simply but effectively. Opening with heavy orchestral stabs and military snares reminicent of classic grime, the addition of a complicated, snaking bassline gives the track a jump up feel, and the eight-bar aggression gives way to sections of orchestral calm and a sad but bouncy piano melody.

New Bass Music Promos

EXIT024 – Consequence – Snakes & Skulls / Dub Bounce – 10″ Vinyl
After Consequence’s debut album on Exit as a virtually unknown producer with only a couple of releases to his name, he has blossomed into a much loved and highly regarded musician who’s compositions have that rare listen again quality. His work has been an integral part of the Autonomic movement over the past two years and will continue to be long into the future. With a recently completed second solo album and also a collaborative album project with friend Joe Seven under the alias ‘They live’ on the release schedule, Exit Records present this single as the first of a 10” series reminding us of his talent. On this 10” he turns his hand to the 140 bpm deep dub style and proves that his sound has no boundaries. ‘Snakes & Skulls’ As usual Consequence manages to mix calming ambience with vibrant drums to achieve that cinematic trait that he’s known for. Combining those elements with earth shaking sub bass he works up an organic sounding roots track that beats away with entrancing tribal energy.Unintelligible vocals flutter in and out with filtered drum effects and percussion creeps in and out which keeps the whole piece moving nicely. ‘Dub Bounce’ is truly a remarkable insight into Consequences ability to create character and trigger emotion with his music. Drums and bass swing so hard they could break your neck Dilla style, whilst despairing atmospheres and odious sound effects wreak havoc on your sense of security like watching a horror flick on acid. Production quality and depth of sound are second to none which comes as standard with Consequence, but this track has it in abundance and is sometimes unfathomable. Its deep and its very dark, but also highly addictive so use with caution.

V.I.V.E.K drops his first single since his much talked about double pack ‘Feel It’ was released on DEEP MEDi in October 2010. ‘Pulse’ opens with V.I.V.E.K’s unmistakable dark, resounding, industrial production with layers of subbed out techno touches and efx. ‘Roots’ however on the flip lurches and twists over a deep cinematic melody, V.I.V.E.K on meditation vibes.
Radio Support: Nihal (Radio 1), Benji B (Radio 1), Gilles Peterson (Radio 1), Youngsta (Rinse FM)
DJ Support: Mala (DMZ), Distance (Chestplate), Tunnidge , Cyrus, Hatcha,

DOT005 – Duffstep – Getting To Sirius Remix EP #2 – 12″ Vinyl
Accompanying the debut LP remix EP number 2 straddling the realms of dubstep, house and disco from an ever emerging pool of old and new guard. Remixes On the dub orientated EP with Mark E, Session Victim and Riley Reinhold. Duffstep’s debut album ‘Getting to Sirius’ is a heady potion laced with influences of dub and down tempo beats, winding through layers of melody and synths whilst vocals soften the blow providing a nice, warm and fuzzy edge to the thick slabs of sonic concrete. Though you won’t have to wait before a nice big bass-line knocks you down on your arse again.

IBR006 – Various Artists – Tax Haven II – 12″ Vinyl
The second “Tax Haven” EP from Iberian Records brings together three different producers operating from within the Lisbon and Barcelona bass enclaves for another varied selection of Bass’n'Groove flavours… First up sees Migrant (aka 23Hz) debut on the label with “Monolith”, a driving monster of a tune propelled by an amen break conjugated through a Kuduro drum pattern. The production comes fitted with extra heavy low end body pressure as standard, as we have come to expect from Migrant in his many guises, and the general vibe has a deep Tribal Jungle take on it. Floor shattering appeal here. On the 33rpm flip sees the return of Lisbon based brothers Octa Push with their “Legos” cut featuring K-Tronik. A result of “playing videogames surrounded by African masks”, the production brings a typically beat savvy attack oozing raw bashy energy, with synths and bleeps fighting all-comers. K-Tronik’s (legendery member of Portuguese Hip Hop duo Nigga Poison) brings tight creole verses to tell a cautionary tale of cocky philandering in the hardcore suburbs of Lisbon. Pure originality! Last up sees Cardopusher’s first release on the label with “Dembow Together”. Since moving from Caracas to Barcelona, Cardopusher has gradually progressed from mid range aggression towards a more Funky tropical vibe. Slowing down the bpms to a Funky jam Cardo takes a Reggaton beat pattern and whilst keeping the summertime vibes, forges something all together much more powerfully dirty with Techno/Electro stylings and the sounds of ancient analogue drum machines.

2 Octa Push Ft. K-Tronik – Legos
3 Cardopusher – Dembow Together

NONPLUS010 – Actress – Harrier ATTK / Gershwin – 12″ Vinyl
With a sound that no one can quite touch, nor classify, it comes as little surprise that an outside-the-box artist like Actress would come into the path of Autonomic. The mastermind behind the cult-worshipped Werk Discs (whose roster includes enigmatic producers Lone, Lukid and Zomby), Actress took the electronic spectrum into another direction entirely last year with ‘Splazsh.’ Released on Damon Albarn’s imprint Honest Jons, ‘Splazsh’ brought dynamic Hypercolour to the insular greyness that his ‘Hazyville’ album captured so well. After his acclaimed debut on Nonplus+ in 2010 – the astral ‘Machine And Voice’ EP, the intriguing artist returns to the label with ‘Gershwin / HarrierA bonafide classic to sit in the ranks alongside Cybotron, in comes a typically all-encompassing, textured four-on-the-floor stomper from Actress. A side: ‘Gershwin’ Conjures the bright metallics and intricate programming of a Ford workshop in a futuristic, sci-fi Detroit, but without the repetitive motion: no two bars are the same, and the track moves through so many colors and sounds it’s hard to keep up. Slamming with sharp, piercing lasers, roughly cut beats sit on a building melody that wraps itself around dreamscape New Order esque synths. aa) Actress ‘Harrier ATTK’ brings back the smoky, blurriness of ‘Hazyville,’ with an especially hypnotic twist. It’s the kind of Actress track that makes a listener lose all sense of time and space: a head nodder that could stay on loop for days, where the smallest subtleties come out loudest. Equal parts sublime and austere, a simple melody loops as a clean bass drum hits gently, and tangible sounds crack in the background.

HBR002 – Optimum – Light Year / DS-10 – 12″ Vinyl
Hum + Buzz return with their first release of 2011 from label co-founder Optimum. After releasing his debut EP ‘Max Power’ for Planet Mu in 2010, contributing to the excellent Night Slugs Allstars Vol. 1 and Modeselektion Vol. 1 compilations, Optimum returns on Hum + Buzz with two sci-fi, dancefloor tracks. ‘Light Year’ is a 4X4 time travelling excursion through brass rhythms, dotted arpeggios and razor sharp percussion. Gangsta techno meets UK bass, a crossover that Optimum seems to be making his own. On the B side ‘DS10’, named after (and partly made on) the Korg software for the Nintendo DS, is a menacing march that progresses into the unknown. All superfluous elements are discarded; the track focuses squarely on the relentless bassline and unpredictable 808 drum pattern. With these minimal ingredients combined, DS10 is a certified sound system bomb!

WNCL004 – Knowing Looks – Abandoned Skip / Last Kiss At The Plains Hotel – 10″ Vinyl
KNOWING LOOKS aka Toronto based producer Jason Hopfner, records for Musique Risquee, is the co-founder of Grain Records and is a welcome addition to the WNCL stable. ABANDONED SKIP is an unashamed dancefloor killer with it’s hard as hell 2-step beats, irresistible shuffle, swathes of funky electronics and perfectly placed rebel-rousing vocal chants. LAST KISS AT THE PLAINS HOTEL, an epic tale of love and loss, displays a mastery of cut-up production and arrangement that nods as much to Bacharach and Mantovani as it winks to Todd Edwards and Akufen.

PPRO14VSX – Photek – Avalanche / 101 – 12″ Vinyl

Marcus Intalex’s ’21′ Album is incoming….

Marcus Intalex’s ’21′ Album is incoming….

Posted 16 February 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

For over two decades, no one had pushed the legacy of bass culture like the stalwart for the deeper end of the spectrum, Marcus Intalex. And yet, despite his storied back catalog of scene-defining releases, genre-crossing remixes, and even a revolutionary LP with M.I.S.T. and calibre (as Mist:ical), the music world has never been graced with a solo album from the innovator himself. Until now, 21 years in.

Since 1990, whether DJing, promoting events (including his Soul:ution nights), radio shows, working in record shops, or running his two historic record labels, Marcus Intalex has always had his hand in music, working his way from being the assistant sweeping the back room of vinyl shops, to being the DJ in front of 50,000 people. Since bright beginnings DJing in Manchester’s underground, and his incomparable first productions with ST Files, even from the outset there was something about Intalex that refused to fit in a comfortable box. It’s a notion that’s followed his every move as a bold A&R visionary, being the first label to sign genre-challengers such as Martyn, Instra:mental and Calibre. Perhaps it can all be traced back to his early days in Manchester, when electronic music was too new to even have boxes or set genres.

Marcus Intalex

In the 80′s, I was always into synth bands, I always liked the idea of synthesized music. When I started DJing, it was just at the start of the Chicago and Detroit sound. That was really my first love of electronic music, and I caught it at the right time. It was at the beginning, there was a buzz, and then obviously the whole rave scene developed. Seeing all of that happen, and going out to the Hacienda for the first time and hearing the DJs play this music that I’d never heard before…it was such an amazing introduction to it, I never lost the love for it.”

Forever bearing a strong alliance with techno, and coming from an upbringing when music defied descroptors, it seems only natural that now, fast forwarding to the present, Intalex would be drawn to the current sounds rumbling the bass circuit (the sounds that, likewise, fall into haphazardly constructed genres like “post-dubstep” or “future bass”). It also comes as vey little suprise that his productions would sway away from conformity, as seen in his most recent productions. His downtempo tracks are currently being championed by the beatseekers of the scene, such as Radio 1′s Benji B and Eglo’s Alexander Nut, Swamp 81′s leader Loefah, 3024 boss Martyn, Scuba, Oneman and 2562.

I’ve found alot of the new sounds are more me than anything, really. It’s influenced by everything I’ve been into for the 21 years, everything I’ve believed in – Techno, the earlier sounds of Drum & Bass, and it’s experimental. The balance in power shifted – not away from Drum & Bass, but almost away from commercial dance music. It’s a 130-140BPM tempo, and that’s all it is: a tempo; it’s an open script otherwise. It’s brilliant.

To Me, Drum & Bass is something that alot of people have ridden on success-wise, and now people have to work a little bit harder because the spotlight is elsewhere. And they are doing exactly that. There seems to be alot of innovative Drum & Bass music coming from alot of different angles and different parts of the world. It’s opened up a new appreciation for the subtelty in D&B. The deeper side has gotten more interesting than ever.

With his first long player, ’21′ is rightly trying to go its own way, regardless of expectation or reaction, just as Intalex has always done as an artist. The result is a wildly unpredictable, yet entirely cohesive, view of where Marcus Intalex stands now, after over 2 decades of watching cycles come and go, and sounds shift and mutate.

I do feel a tinge of regret for not doing this sooner, but I’ve never been one to do something just because it’s what you’re supposed to do. It’s not as though the whole 21 years has been building up to this moment, where I’ve been working to create a tour de force. It just so happens that right now, I’m making some music that I’m happy with; I’m enjoying the studio more than ever before.

The album’s not necessarily crying out to be noticed, and I haven’t done it with that in mind – It’s quite an introspective things, actually. I’ve had a great 21 years. Being in the business for so long, you would normally expect to feel like you’re entering the twilight of your careerm but really and truly I feel more ready for the future than I have ever felt before.

Coming soon – Calibre “Even If” LP [Signature]

“Ok so this is my 7th album, it doesn’t feel like it but I don’t know what should…..the last dnb album I wrote from the ground up was overflow, so in between I released Shelflife 2 a compilation of unreleased tracks, and Shine A Light my weird departure from everything,  with Even If…. I was back on familiar ground, I employed my voice a few times, got emotional, forgot everything and turned the tempo up. I’m always looking for the songwriter slant in dnb, to feel the blues in my music is important to me, it is a raw connection I never get tired of looking for. And to sing it means a lot to me. I’ve tried to cover my own long standing interests in a musical genre that was supposed to have died a long time ago. And so here it is, a collection of tunes I’ve put together for the purpose of moving some part of you that’s the same part of me”.

Subtitles UK Presents – Ulterior Motive

Subtitles UK Presents – Ulterior Motive

Posted 12 May 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 1 Comment

Breaking through with a fresh & funk-fuelled sound, the Bournemouth-based DJ/production duo of James Davidson and Greg Hepworth are making their mark in 2010 and setting the pace for others to follow.
These two essential singles mark the relaunch of a newly revitalised Subtitles and clearly demonstrate why Ulterior Motive are fast-building a reputation for high-quality, innovative drum & bass.

Ulterior Motive

James Davidson and Greg Hepworth joined forces in 2003 when they discovered a mutual passion for the kind of funky, technical and futuristic drum & bass pioneered by Ed Rush & Optical in the late-90s. Taking this as inspiration, they worked hard to forge a sound of their own by combining custom hand-built studio kit with modern production techniques before tentatively reaching out with early demos. The response was immediate and Ulterior Motive tracks have since become a staple for the very best selectors in the scene.

Teebee was one of the first to recognise their talent, snapping up ‘Infrasonic b/w Holding On to Never’ for Ulterior Motive’s debut single on Subtitles. Summer 2010 brings two further 12”s, ‘Featherweight b/w Glued’ and ‘2098 b/w Yoghurt Brainwave’, with both singles getting heavy rotation right across the board from Noisia, DJ Marky, Marcus Intalex, Alix Perez, Loxy, Calyx, Commix, Break, Icicle and Kasra to name but a few.

One of the standout tracks of 2009’s Sun & Bass Festival, ‘Featherweight’ put the duo firmly on the map and has been punching holes through speakers worldwide ever since. Built on crisp breaks, cheeky percussion and a classic hip-hop hook, the certified dancefloor-smasher showcases their signature funky sound and delivers a downright dirty bassline sure to test any system.

Ulterior Motive

Combining an open-minded creative approach with the technical skills and drive to bring their ideas to life, Ulterior Motive have already collaborated with the likes of Jubei, Rockwell, Zero T, Sabre and FD among others. Demonstrating attention to detail, quality control and a strong work ethic, the versatile producers have their sights firmly set on the top with offers from leading labels and some high profile remix work in the pipeline.

Appearances for top label nights Renegade Hardware and Ram and festivals including Sun & Bass have proved both members of Ulterior Motive to be highly-capable DJs in their own right. Look out for live sets across the UK and Europe as Ulterior Motive look set to build on their successes and keep their sound fresh.

SUBTITLESUK001
Ulterior Motive

a) Featherweight
b) Glued

Released 31st May 2010 on 12″ Vinyl / Digital

Going straight for the knockout in Round 1, ‘Featherweight’ is Ulterior Motive’s biggest track to date and a firm favourite with heavy hitters like Teebee, Hype, DJ Marky, dBridge, Marcus Intalex, Fabio & Grooverider and Friction. Punchy beats combine with a classic hip- hop hook to set the vibes before dropping below-the-belt with a bassline dirtier than Mike Tyson. ‘Glued’ rolls out with infectious percussion and a rasping low-end, keeping crowds gripped to the dancefloor and reinforcing this crucial future-proofed 12”.

SUBTITLESUK002
Ulterior Motive

a) 2098
b) Yoghurt Brainwave

Released 28th June 2010 on 12″ Vinyl / Digital

Ulterior Motive take you back to the future with ‘2098’, recalling pre- millennial tension with sci-fi atmospherics, genetically modified breaks and a bionic bassline straight out of the golden era of drum & bass. DJ support from the likes of Noisia, Ed Rush & Optical, Alix Perez, Jubei, Total Science, Commix and Break proves they’re doing it right. ‘Yoghurt Brainwave’ sees the UM boys swapping their trademark synths for full-fat funk bass and hinting there’s a heck of a lot more in their locker.

What the DJ’s are saying:

Ed RushGonna be playing 2098 for an age, doing serious damage worldwide. More tunes like this please!

dBridgeI wondered how long it would be for someone to come along and re-ignite the flame left to fade by others

SP:MCOptical left the gate open and these boys are coming right on through

JubeiThese guys are like the Marty McFly & Doc Emmett Brown of drum & bass right now, bringing that funk back. As Ulterior Motive build momentum, we all wait with great anticipation
