Scuba “Personality” LP [Hotflush Recordings]

Posted 17 January 2012 | By | Categories: news, player, tracks | No Comments

Scuba is the production and DJ alias of Paul Rose, the curator of Hotflush Recordings, a label, which having released some of the most important tracks of the formative period of dubstep, has grown into a leading player in the wider world of electronic music. A celebrated and influential DJ, Scuba was voted #25 in Resident Advisor’s 2011 poll of the world’s Top 100 DJs and has also been nominated for several categories in DJ Magazine’s Best of British 2011 Awards.

Earlier this year Scuba released his ‘Adrenalin’ EP, picking up radio plays from Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank as well as Mistajam, illustrating how his sound has mutated into previously unexplored areas. Alongside ‘Adrenalin, Scuba also released his addition to K7!’s DJ Kicks series which has made notable appearances on several “Best of 2011″ lists.

On the 27th February, Scuba will release his third album through Hotflush. Entitled ‘Personality’ and featuring 11 brand new tracks, it takes in a wealth of genres across contemporary dance music, proving once again Scuba’s place at the cutting edge of the electronic music scene. Preceding his LP will be ‘The Hope’; pushing on from the tense atmospherics of previous Scuba material, the single fizzes with claustrophobic bass pressure and menacing narration. Backed by an exclusive non-album cut ‘Flash Addict’, ‘The Hope’ will proceed the album on the 6th February.

Paul Rose aka Scuba

Originally from London, Scuba relocated to Berlin in 2007, and released his debut album, ‘A Mutual Antipathy‘ in 2008. The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking producers to emerge from the London bass scene. In the same year, Scuba founded the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. SUB:STANCE has since launched in New York with a look to expanding further in 2012.

Scuba’s second album, ‘Triangulation’, was released on Hotflush in early 2010, joining the likes of Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure, Joy Orbison, Untold, Sigha and George Fitzgerald on its enviable roster.  With ‘Personality’ due for imminent release and plans for a live show in the works, Paul Rose’s constantly developing world seems set to keep on turning in 2012.

Coming soon – Martyn “Left Hander / Shook Up” [3024]

Posted 28 October 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

After a year dominated with collaborations (the Great Lengths remix double pack), fresh blood and inveterate genre renegades (Illum Sphere’s Titan EP & Altered Natives ‘The Bitch/Crop Duster’ respectively) We at 3024 came to the conclusion a new Martyn release was perhaps overdue. Not so much an album preview as a standalone document of a year spent expanding dance floor horizons over (a great many) seas.

3024’s milestone 10th release arrives in November with 2 brand new Martyn tracks as ‘Lefthander’ clatters in on heavily filtered drums, flickering high hats & garbled radio transmissions before a carousel synth melody breaks through the percussive murk accompanied by a roaming bass line that prioritises restraint over bludgeon. Dubbed out ambience rapidly takes root in the gaps between concrete snares & dissonant brass stabs as bass and synths elevate themselves for one last round of call & response sparring before dissolving back into barely audible dialogue.

Steam age industrial monolith ‘Shook Up’ swaps slink for haunted metronomic brutality, snapping quickly into focus first with relentless kicks before bass akin to an Atari2600 playing Berghain looms over the clouded horizon. Offsetting the claustrophobia is the first hints of melody as an impossibly slight piano phrase creeps in, countering rhythmical pummelling with ghost in the machine delicacy. Classically spastic 808 tendrils are underpinned by soaring synth strings as proceedings draw to a juddering close.

Capturing 3024’s musical progress with typical accuracy Erosie’s latest sleeve design is perhaps his best yet, echoing the back to basics theme with beautifully austere monochrome geometry curdling into something altogether more volatile at the edges.

Coming soon – “Bassweight” DVD [SRK]

Posted 21 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, video | No Comments

BASSWEIGHT is a feature length documentary that offers an unparalleled insight into the subterranean world of Dubstep. Charting the genre’s growth from obscure origins in south London to global recognition today, the film features in-depth interviews with many of the DJ’s, producers and promoters who have been instrumental in Dubstep’s ongoing evolution.

Skream, Benga, Kode 9 and Mary Anne Hobbs are just some of the key players who have contributed, reflecting on the movement they’ve helped shape; a movement that has come to define the importance of underground music in the 21st Century.

This highly stylised film travels from Dubstep’s birthplace in Croydon to Europe, Brazil and Japan, demonstrating just how huge an impact this initially indigenous scene has made at an international level. Directed and produced by The SRK (Soka Afrika, Graffiti Asia, Rackgaki, Scratching the Surface: Japan), BASSWEIGHT documents this most clandestine of movements on its own terms and in its own voice.

Coming soon – Quest “Smooth Skin / Wind Tunnel” [DEEP MEDi Musik]

Posted 10 June 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 2 Comments

Quest is one of Dubstep’s forerunners signed to DEEP MEDi Musik and one of Antisocial Entertainment originals alongside Silkie, Heny G, Kromestar, Harry Craze, Jay 5 and Mizz Beats. Quest is never one to shout and make a fuss, always quiet and thoughtful but whilst all around are loosing their heads in the madness Quest has directed all his energy in to his production and is always far more at ease at letting his music do the talking.

Quest

Quest’s 4th release on DEEP MEDi ‘Smooth Skin’ showcases his progression, diversity and forward thinking as a producer. With it’s lush and dreamy opening chords, thumping bass kick, layered percussion and hypnotic vibes, you would be forgiven in forgetting about the B-line until it’s speaker shifting impact almost halfway through the track! Quest showing with ‘Smooth Skin’ that he takes as much inspiration from Detroit legends such as Moodymann and Theo Parrish as he does from label owner Mala (DMZ) and his very own Antisocial Entertainment Crew. ‘Wind Tunnel’ however on the flip sees Quest bouncing back to his Gangsta Boogie vibes for which he is so well known. Heavyweight, frenetic breakneck percussion, insane wall of bass, hard soulful and jazzy influences taking you on a mystical journey into outer space!

Apple Pips – Forthcoming Release News

Apple Pips – Forthcoming Release News

Posted 18 May 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Originally set up in 2008, Appleblim’s Bristol based label Apple Pips has been exploring the areas between Dubstep, Techno, Minimal & House with an emphasis on echo, depth, swing and bass.

We’ve seen releases from some of the leaders of underground electronic like Martyn, T++, Ramadanman, Appleblim himself, Peverelist and Instra:mental.
The label is back and we have exclusive news about the next two releases on the label.

PIPS011
Komanazmuk

a) Dance Too
aa) Dance Too (Lee Jones Remix)

Released on 21st June 2010 on 12″ Vinyl / Digital.

Komonazmuk drops a tough slice of deep, stepping, and melodic dubstep for our 11th release…
With his history in rave culture stretching back to the oldskool days, through releases on Hardleaders & Moving Shadow with Ice Minus, right up to his current cutting edge productions, Keiran Lomax aka Komonazmuk has got his fingers in many musical pies.

Having had big releases on scene-leaders like Tempa, and his debut album coming on H.E.N.C.H. later this year, his versatility as a producer and engineer is second to none. Teaming up with Appleblim for remix work has resulted in stunning reworks of artists as varied as Bonobo, Brendon Moeller, and Harmonia & Brian Eno, for labels such as Ninja Tune, Francois Kevorkian’s Wave Music, & Will Saul’s Aus Music.

In fact after Komonazmuk & Appleblim remixed Lee Jones & Nick Hoppner’s My My project for Aus Music, Lee Jones returned the musical favour with this stunning deeper than deep house rework of Dance Too…

With a residency at Fabric, and regularly playing all over the world, 2010 is looking great for Komonazmuk! DJ/Radio support coming from Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 1), Rob Da Bank (Radio 1/Bestival), Sinden (Kiss/Domino), Appleblim & many more…

PIPS012
Joe

a) Untitled
aa) Digest

Released on 28th June 2010 on 12″ Vinyl / Digital.

With the success of our last releases getting props and plays from DJs as diverse as Erol Alkan, DJ T, Martyn, Deetron, & Rob Da Bank we are really excited to present our next slice of futuristic funk for your ears and booty from the extremely talented Joe.

With his debut, the awesome ‘Grimelight’, being released on Hessle Audio, Joe is part of a loose group of likeminded and future-thinking producers & DJs that includes Hessle Audio’s Ramadanman, Ben UFO, & Pangaea, and Untold & James Blake. Whilst they all have very individual sounds, they share a vision of dubstep, uk funky, techno & house influenced beats that seem to defy genre.

The A-side ‘Untitled’ is a huge stepping wad of funk, bringing to mind 2-step, early Skream & Benga, even stripped down grime classics like Pulse X, but with a truly contemporary twist. This tune drops hard, and has been a secret weapon of Appleblim’s for some time now – he was pleasantly surprised to see ravers of all ages go mad to it!

The flip sees Joe’s more experimental leanings come out on ‘Digest’, but he never forgets the groove and funk. With rolling percussion, steppy sub bass and shiny analogue synth stabs cutting through, it seems to us like a mixture of Mala from Digital Mystikz and Theo Parrish! High praise indeed…

DJ/Radio support coming from Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 1), Modeselektor, Peverelist, Rob Da Bank (Radio 1/Bestival), Paul Woolford, Ramadanman, Brackles, Appleblim & many more.

Coming soon: Mark Pritchard on DEEP MEDi Musik

Coming soon: Mark Pritchard on DEEP MEDi Musik

Posted 09 February 2010 | By | Categories: news, player, tracks | No Comments

What’s to say about the phenomenal production talent of Mark Pritchard that has  not already been said? Mark has been lovingly producing cutting edge music for some two decades now under numerous music guises and aliases such as Global Communications, Reload, Troubleman, Jedi Knights and most recently under his Harmonic 313 moniker for Warp Records. Along the way Mark has captured the attention of the most discerning industry heavyweights, be it DJ Jazzy Jeff extolling the virtues of his Harmonic 33 project, Kenny Dope raving about his Troubleman output, or tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs and Benji B eagerly anticipating the next email from Mr Pritchard bearing the fruits of his labour in the studio.

Over the last four years Mark has become entranced with the bass weight of dubstep from such pioneering figures as Mala, Kode9, Benga and Skream to name but a few. Nowhere can this be more clearly heard than on his Harmonic 313 LP and his jiggy anthem ‘Wind It Up’ featuring Sa-Ra’s Om’Mas Keith released on Hyperdub in 2009.

Mark’s first release on Mala’s DEEP MEDi Musik imprint showcases both facets of his production talent. The appropriately titled ‘Elephant Dub’ rumbles and shakes with earth shattering density and is relentless in its sub bass charge, which poses problems on lesser sound systems which have been known to give up the ghost or simply shut down in the face of such an onslaught. On the flip ‘Heavy As Stone’ takes us in a completely different direction, maintaining a deeper, organic vibe with percussive, hypnotic drum patterns and a driving double time bass. A little something for everyone then.

Ital Tek is 22 year old Alan Myson from Brighton. Since bursting onto the Dubstep scene in 2007 with his Blood Line EP (Planet Mu Records) he has gone on to enjoy great success with constant international touring, and has garnered a legion of fans.  Alan has carved his own niche in bass music with references to 90’s Electronica and Techno blended masterfully to create his own style of hard hitting and melodic Dubstep. He has gained respect as one of the most exciting and forward thinking producers in the scene today.

2008 saw the release of his debut album “Cyclical” also on Planet Mu. The record further showcased Alan’s musical and production skills and brought about much worldwide attention. This would lead to Mary Anne Hobbs inviting Alan to perform a guest mix for her BBC Radio 1 show and he would later write the exclusive tune “Archaic” to open her “Evangeline” compilation album highlighting the best of underground bass music.  The album went on to be one of the highest selling Dubstep records of the year.

italtek

In 2009 Planet Mu released the “Massive Error EP” which brought together a more dance floor oriented sound with hints of grime, techno and classic IDM. Alan has been booked to play at countless club nights and festivals over the past few years including Bloc and Glade. The Guardian newspaper hailed Alan’s set at Glade Festival their highlight of the festival from a new artist.

October 2009 sees the launch of his own label “Atom River” with the debut release “Mako EP”. He continues to work on his follow up album and has many more international live dates before the end of year.

Ital Tek (Alan Myson) is back with his second release of 2009: Mako EP, proving again that he is carving his own sound within the spectrum of bass music. His busy international touring schedule and releases on the infamous Planet Mu label have cemented his reputation as one of the most inventive producers working under the Dubstep banner today.  Following on from 2008’s acclaimed album Cyclical and 2009’s Massive Error this is the debut release for his own imprint Atom River.  Over 4 tracks it sees Ital Tek once again perfectly bridging the gap between Dubstep, Techno and Electronica whilst retaining strong dance floor energy.

Mako opens the record with one of Ital Tek’s warmest and thickest sounding tunes to date. Driving fuzz bass and a searing twisted lead push the track onwards over a bed of glorious chord progressions.

Chemical Temple stomps in with a lurching half step rhythm and thick cutting synth lines before breaking down in a pulsating double time bass driven mesh of tight flickering percussion and distant ghostly melodies breaking through into the foreground.

Manhattan sets things off with a bang on the B side. Sharp cold metallic breaks drop into a heavy driving bass throb. The drums cut through the track with shattering precision allowing the bass to whip out the solid rhythm, whilst again complimenting Ital Tek’s knack for melody.

Topaz closes the record with a hard hitting Techno – Dubstep crossover. Pounding kicks and crisp percussion swell over the course of 5 minutes into a crescendo of swirling synths before dropping finally into an epic rinse out.

This record once again shows Ital Tek’s ability to bring both heaviness and beauty to music that is as equally suited in a club as it is sound tracking a late night drive.

Following in Ramadanman‘s supreme tribal tracks, comes South London production outfit LV. Fresh from two releases on Hyperdub and remixes for Hemlock, the quartet deliver the rootical Don’t Judge featuring vocals from seasoned UK rootsman Errol Bellot, who has worked with King Tubby among others.

On the flip side, Wolverhampton’s Fantastic Mr Fox takes the big tools to the original and refashions an epic remix with a wicked 2 step swing. Nuff said, enjoy!

As big fans of illustration and graphics, over the last seven releases the label has commissioned some truly wonderful art from a slew of talented artists including Remi/Roughe, Uiu and Phil Blake. For 008, London based Mat Pringle was given the chance to design our first 12” sleeve. His wave and bamboo illustration is wicked and is hand printed onto just 500 limited edition sleeves.
