HORO001 – Tokyo Prose & FIS – Truth or Dare – 10″ Vinyl
Limited Multi Coloured vinyl 10″ red, white & blue mixture. To launch the new Samurai vinyl only ‘Horo’ series, we also introduce and exciting new artist from Samurai Music’s birthplace, New Zealand. FIS is a Wellington local who was a regular customer at the now closed Samurai Store (record store). Inspired by the new music he was purchasing at the time, FIS went hard to work at designing his own unique sound. The results were instantly quality, and a CD handed to label boss Presha began his story. With dBridge and Consequence major fans and an Exit Records release on the horizon, Tokyo Prose sat down with FIS to work on creating a fusion of their 2 styles. ‘The Dares’ was the first off the mark, instantly becoming a playlist favourite with the Exit records family, and more recently, ‘The Truths’ has completed the 10″ in the same grinding, surging roll ‘The Dares’ started with. Blocks and Escher have over the space of 2 years grown from being acclaimed newcomers and solo artists to establishing themselves as one of Drum and Bass’ most exciting and sought after production outfits. Their debut releases in 2009 found their way into the record bags of scene luminaries such as Fabio, Marcus Intalex, DJ Hype, Spectrasoul, and Alix Perez- as well as gaining attention outside of the genre for their emotive and progressive take on Drum and Bass with support from artists as varied as Rob Da Bank, Jazzanova, Mary Ann Hobbs and Laurent Garnier. Formed at the start of 2011 by D&B kingpins of the UK’s north-east Phobia, Sato and Tyrone, Chroma are looking forward to big things indeed in 2012. Already with their first studio excursions very well received by the likes of DJ Hype, Jubei, Kasra, Flight and more it’s not surprising that the likes of Renegade Hardware and Frequency have been snapping at their heels for some Chroma exclusives. For now though the boys drop their new piece of dance floor skullduggery on Phobia’s Coded imprint to kick off the new year. ‘Falling Down’ intros with smooth pads and a delicate arpeggiated synth that paves the way for the oncoming melancholy vocal from LKP who delivers his refreshing flow with consummate ease. Very limited vinyl repress! Nocturnal Sunshine is the new alias for Maya Jane Coles. She’s one half of  vocal duo She Is Danger and an emerging tech house superstar under her own name. This release, is all about the A side “Can’t Hide the Way I Feel,” the writhing monster that both fetishes extreme pain and bottles it up in an unbearably spiralling arpeggio that grows and shrinks without ever revealing an opening. “Broke” drops with a driving beat suitable for peaktime but atmospherics ripe for opening sets or gently winding down. GHM002 – Zoltan – Pluton EP – 12″ Vinyl
So in October last year Granholme finally became a reality with the release of Graphic’s Wiping The Eye EP. As the first release on a label no one had heard of it was both humbling (people were actually willing to listen) and reassuring (after being obsessed with the tracks from early on) to see the support from a bunch of people. A large and sincere thank you for that. You might have spotted the shift in sound of the last track, a well received remix by Zoltan that was later given away on XLR8R.com (& is now on our soundcloud page). We’re finally ready to release GHM-002, a 3 track Zoltan EP with Graphics returning the favour with an extra promo only remix. It’s a change in tone from our first release flying it’s floor filling ambitions with pride, and for that we are thankful. ’Pluton’ opens the EP with a relentless crack and percussive chatter quickly joined by diva glitches and gyroscope bass stirring, before said low end rotations and hi hats resolve themselves into motorik syncopation, periodically cooling down before bursting back into life. Flipside ‘When I’m’ further ups the raver uniting stakes with crunching ST-esque kicks & snares and chiming vocals building into plunging breakdowns, all sucked down by a heaving space where the low end should be. Digi-only track ‘You Don’t’ brings the EP to a close with a further refinement of ‘Pluton’s helicopter bass, adding hammering acid flecked psychosis to the party. There’s also a vaguely recognizable vocal buried in there that might have kept the track from vinyl inclusion, but we wouldn’t know about that.Finally there’s Graphics aforementioned rework of ‘When I’m', due to be released as a free promo download in the coming month. More in tune with the post-rave dawn crawl home, Graphics slashes the tempo while the vocal is twisted into an unintelligible taunt and isolated kicks & stomach cramp synths coalesce into a uniquely dead eyed shuffle. Confirmed DJ & Radio support so far from; Jackmaster (Numbers / Rinse), Scratcha (HyperDub / Rinse), Roska (Rinse), Shox (Rinse), xxxy (Orca/TenThousandYen), Presk (Ten Thousand Yen / AudioCulture – used ‘When I’m’ on his Fact mix just before Xmas).

Shortstuff’s ‘Mickey Pearce’ alter ego was the first artist to release on Blunted Robots, way back in 2009. Since then he’s been on the rob, abusing the work of people more fortunate than himself, and passing it off as his own.

It only seemed right to profit from his crimes, so while he was out, we snuck into Mickey’s bedsit and stole a fresh EP from his hard drive.

‘Mickey’s Car Boot’ gathers some of the biggest cuts that have done the rounds of late, uncluding a bootleg of Ms. Dynamite’s ‘What You Talkin’ About?’ that has been played by everyone from Rob Da Bank to Modeselektor.

The EP will be available as the first in a new series of FREE downloads from the new Blunted Robots website.

EXIT020 Peach Fuzz – System Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Mark System is by no means a newcomer to the music world having been performing as an MC and producing music for labels such as Digital Soundboy and Shogun Audio amongst others for over a decade. His debut on Exit Records consists of two tracks which underline his production skills and originality in sound design and arrangement. On the A-Side we have “Peach Fuzz”. A track created and named by System after attending and gaining inspiration from Carl Cox’s closing party at Space. He claims that Danny Tenaglia’s set stimulated him to think about new ways of approaching tracks. “Peach Fuzz“ was the result and what a result it was. This track oozes originality and is a pearl in the boxes of many top DJs at the moment such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Ed Rush, Commix, Friction etc. On the B-side we have “Voices” from System, which is an elaborate workout of glitchy beats, choppy break edits and curious melodies. This track is far from formulaic, having been started as an experiment to vent creative juices with no intention of it leaving his computer, were glad it did!

BLUSYNC002 Sampler 2 Sync: Saphir LP – Electrosoul System / Bionic1 Blu Saphir 12″ Vinyl
For the second sampler of the Sync:Saphir album collaboration, the sounds are switched up a bit, bringing in a very heavy remix of Electrosoul System’s Fun (from BLUS004) and newcomer BIONIC1′s Love Machine. These two tunes put a new spin on the usual Blu Saphir and Syncopix releases you’re used to, bringing deep, techy, rolling vibes to the table. You’re all used to Henree, spitting out releases over the last five years on the likes of Blindside, Deep Kut, Sound Trax, Lucky Devil, Phunkfiction, Soul:R and Vampire. BIONIC1 is a newcomer to Drum & Bass, but he’s got a rolled out sound that’s not to be missed!
A. ELECTROSOUL SYSTEM — FUN (HENREE REMIX) Before listening to this remix, you might want to revisit the original to notice the change in texture and sound. Henree definitely lays it down with this remix. Bass heavy and driving, you’ll feel bass quakes rolling through the floor as this one passes through the sound system. The opening resembles the original, but that’s all you’re going to get that hasn’t really changed. The moody chord progression that is stabilized throughout the track is enough to make a spine tingle, while the minimal vocal adds spice and atmosphere to an already amazing work. Very melodic and uplifting, an excellent choice in remix selection for this record!
B. BIONIC1 — LOVE MACHINE There is no one word to describe this track. One second you’re locked inside some type of futuristic space encounter, and then bombarded by techy stabs and vicious bass in the next. Following a sexy and seductive vocal, “Wanna go for a ride?,” all chaos breaks loose! Rolling tech funk is the name of the game here! Fans of labels like DNAudio, Black Reign LTD, Quarantine, Critical and Shadow Law will want to check into this one!

With FD being one of the brains behind possibly the most forward-thinking drum and bass event in London, Medium, you know before listening the force is strong on this one. Beautifully breezy pads open up ‘Canopy’ and a straight down the line break gets things moving nicely as added percussion seaps in along the way before the drop. Out go the pads and in comes a refreshingly spacious arrangement of percussive FX and thumping deep subs perfect for those dark late-night dance floors. Wait for the sumptuous atmospherics to return and you can’t help but be swept away by the groove as it carries us all the way to the end. A bit special. Then on to ‘Remorse’ and the guys spook things out a little with a ghostly whispered samples and an off-kilter break rolling under paranoid synth stabs and pads. As more booming subs kick in the pace picks up with shuffling snares and heavily filtered sonics that fill the speakers to drive it forward hard, while still retaining a huge sense of space that’ll see this in the DJ boxes at the deeper end of the spectrum.

Mizzy’s debut 12” on DEEP MEDi Musik showcases both her versatility and a lightness of touch that belies her years. ‘My World’ marries sloping half-step drums, offhand tom rolls and cleverly constructed synth work, conjuring a wickedly melodious groove. From dirty club tracks to audio installations and deep listening, he is no stranger to the numerous ways of compressing organic emotions into expressions in data. Coming from one of the first local proponents of the new wave of multicoloured “beat” music moving feet in select locations around the globe, Presenser / Mi Empress is a study in elasticised electronic hip-hop and moist, yet fiery 140bpm bass structures.

Smothered in trademark atmospheric stealth and slither, Move Your Soul has MRK1 making fanfares for imperial squadrons, and intercepting vintage female dance vocals in a hostage situation as he darts in and out of another of his chrome mazes. Remember when Peter Griffin from Family Guy is granted the wish of having his own theme music wherever he goes? MRK1 can conceivably pop round the newsagents to the sound of ominous intergalactic friction. Taken from the forthcoming potential lipsmacker Sound of Contagious album out soon, it stands in the gap between dubstep and electronica at its surliest, moving to an easy-to-follow path so that the mass of the situation becomes hard to take on the chin. In other words, it may move freely, but it still casts a serious shadow. Another album preview is The Electrician, which takes the rewiring of plugs to industrially draconian lengths. Synths are programmed to kick you both in the guts and your fillings as MRK1 walks the plank of spinning blades with a crystal finish, operated by a black-hearted Speak n Spell. Dubstep’s jackhammer blur of beats are dodged for a firm putting down of his foot while making the traditional aspect of dub stand out. PSQ002 Untitled / 1993 / Horizons – Furesshu Project Squared 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. This 12″ picks up where Furesshu’s digital releases at a dubstep tempo on Echodub left off but also pushes into the deep, Berlin inspired techno sound that he is presently concentrating on. 1993 sounds fast for its mid 130s tempo, the bass drives the trackís pace and the delay affected stabs provide just enough melody. Horizons feels slower, you could perhaps describe it as a half step track although it twists up the formula for that sub genre. The bass evolves and changes throughout the track, rising and falling, coupled with drones and drums punctuating the track rather than providing a constant element. Untitled marks a change in Furesshuís sound. 4/4 deep techno; 11 minutes of gradual, constant evolution in the melodic parts of the track but the driving, perfectly toned kick drum and hi hats holding the groove in place.

Nevertheless, HENCH is one label that remains at the forefront of this ever-expanding scene. The 13th release from the imprint presents an outstanding 12” comprising of ‘Rhythm’ from label boss, Jakes, along with the debut release from Bristol’s rapidly rising star, Mensah. These tracks both feature on the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1 (soon to be released). The compilation is to be mixed by Jakes and will feature unreleased tracks from Papa ‘ench himself. A. JAKES – RHYTHM is the name, and you can bet your bottom dollar that this tune has it. Immediately setting the step, a background siren gives the warning for what’s about to follow. With Jakes’ vocal defining the riff of the track, get ready for a bassline that’s best described as ‘underwater funk’. This tune’s had a lot of love from all the right people, and it’s not hard to see why – with Jakes’ innovative flavour stamped all over it – Rhythm truly stands out in the crowd.
AA. MENSAH – PULSE 80’s – Flip over for the bass-led rhythm of ‘Pulse 80’s’. Building the intro with a glitchy lead-synth and punchy kick-drum, nothing detracts from the simple yet effective pulse of the beat. When the bass drops, expect the dancefloor to be bouncing up and down in time. Showcasing Mensah’s diverse influences, this is just one example of the various different styles of dubstep productions he’s producing right now. Watch out for further releases on HENCH from this young-one, we are tipping Mensah for big things.

A. TEK-ONE – BROKEN STRING This is one standout tune, recognisable from the off. A haunting synth with the kind of vocal rare in dubstep productions, brings you in gently to the drop. From there its all change – the drum roll makes way for a mechanical and glitchy bass riff that’s going to have people running for cover. With the occasional vocal stab, Tek-One’s effort is an outstandingly paradoxical release – both beautifully atmospheric and dancefloor-destroying at the same time. Having already remixed Way out West and Fugative, Tek-One are one’s to watch.
AA. KOMONAZMUK – YOU FO’ A return to HENCH from one of Bristol’s most exciting producers; Komonazmuk. And using ‘You Fo’ as a measure, its clear that Komon’s style has matured significantly during that time. This release is a heavily dubby and technoinfused track that is a real creeper. Building a moody affair from the off, the sub-bass is complemented by tripped-out stabs of the synth. One for the connoisseurs of what dubstep has grown into – ‘You Fo’ pays homage to the melting pot of styles that contribute to what this genre is today. If nothing else, this track dictates that whatever you do in 2010, you need to pick up Komonazmuk’s album dropping on HENCH later this year.

Finish copy. It was not the hand of chance which secured Sami Sanchez’s place in today’s DJs and producers arena as one of the freshest, most promising up-and-coming names. Sanchez got his first gig at a street party in Cuba. Playing a mixture of Reggaeton, hip hop, Garage and Ragga, he knew right there and then his future was in music. Whilst at University, studying a degree in Sound Engineering, Sami Sanchez starting working at the cult-status record store Black Market Records (currently BM Soho). Sami soon started extending his musical expertise to DnB, US house and the then-newly developed Dubstep and UK Funky. Combining his urban musical expertise and his Latin roots influences, Sami quickly progressed and started playing at top Latin club nights. He imminently became a favourite on the Urban Latin scene, playing alongside DJs such as Tony Touch, DJ Nelson, DJ Buddha, Don Omar, Tego Calderon, Andy Boy and Khrisy Angel. It was in 2009 when Sami suffered an acute brain injury, but through sheer determination and strong will to live, he is continuing to follow his dream. Only eight months later, we are proud to announce Sami Sanchez’s first official UK Funky release, ‘Dirty Salsa’ & ‘Dirty Trumpet’. LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

Blending components of acid house, Detroit techno, ‘golden age’ drum & bass, vintage dubwise and African rhythm, his sound is rich in texture and musical heritage, yet remains eminently danceable. The North London based producer – Adam Wilson to his friends – started dabbling with production in 1994 with a Roland D5 and Atari ST while he was still at school. Soon after he invested in an Akai S2000 sampler, bought a PC, and the rest, as they say, is history. In the nineties he predominantly focused on making drum and bass and experimental electronica, eventually putting out his first drum and bass release as a white label off his own back. A few years later, together with schoolmate Dario Swade, they formed the breakbeat garage duo Elemental & 3D, releasing on their own label Runtime Records in 2002. A couple of years later after some time abroad, Elemental caught the likes of Search & Destroy on Rinse FM and instantly found the sound he had been looking for: dark, heavy, syncopated beats and bass. Since 2004, Elemental has been focused on bringing his newly developed sound to the masses. Combining dubbed out dirty bass lines with hypnotising rhythms, he has released on labels such as Destructive, Hotflush, Pitch Black, Halo Beats, and his own imprint Runtime, with his seminal track “Soulfire” one of the highlights on Tayo’s Fabriclive mix CD. He was officially the first person to do a live dubstep performance, mixing up and dubbing components of his productions using Ableton Live to rapturous audiences across the world: no set is ever the same twice.

DST008 Blues Is Now – Funk Ethics Destructive Records 12″ Vinyl
3-track debut release from the UK’s Funk Ethics, first noticed and permanently represented by London’s legendary Dubstep label Destructive Records. “Blues Is Now” is the tune that launched FE into the limelight and was quickly picked up by Mary Anne Hobbs and showcased on her Radio 1 show, it was originally featured on the Destructive CD album which came out fairly recently (DSTCD001). Two brand new tracks “Dub Fluid” and “Trans Europa Step” are showcased on the flip, good support and a good buzz on these tracks as the funk-tech sounds of the Funk Ethics roll on into 2010.

Lisbon-based Octa Push are the newest recruits on the Iberian label and here they come up with the goods on this very distinctive international flavoured 3-tracker – following their debut vinyl release on Soul Jazz Records, Stepper’s Delight 2 compilation. Having blown up the Red Bull Stage at this year’s Sonar in Barcelona and wowed people at Fabric and the Glade Festival with their unique flow; which sees them combine the Portuguese and African sound spliced with elements of UK Garage, Dancehall and Techno. PSQ001 Small Hours – Asusu Project Squared 12″ Vinyl

Project Squared aims to release 12” vinyl and download projects that are dance floor focused, that test new ground and that have depth as well as impact. We release music that covers the space between Techno and Dubstep as well as music that stays more firmly within those two genres. Created as a sub-label of Project Mooncircle due to a change in taste from one of the co-ordinators of that label, we were amazed to find two artists (Asusu and Furesshu) that were not signed such was the quality of their music. Still in early stages, the label aims to keep releasing high quality dance music, to gather more artists and to change and evolve as styles change and evolve… Most importantly as our own tastes change and evolve. Project Squared is a sub-label of Project Mooncircle and is affiliated with HHV.de. The label is co-run by Paul Cooper and Gordon Gieseking. Artwork and design is by Gordon Gieseking. Asusu – Now a dubstep producer with his sound tied to the deeper side of things, Asusu has moved from roots in hip hop and trip hop through to garage, dubstep and dub techno. Recently he has received radio play from various DJ’s on Sub FM, Dubstep FM and Reload Radio, and DJ’s himself (dubstep, garage & techno) mainly in Bath and Bristol. His tracks have received accolades in Mixmag and ATM (L.V. and XI’s top ten charts). He currently holds a residency at Rocksteady, Bath’s first monthly dubstep night, and also regularly co-hosts a show on Sub.fm alongside Trigga.

HENCH012 Ironhide / Slaughtered – Lost Hench 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Born and bred in Croydon, 19-year old Justin Cantor, a.k.a Lost, is the latest addition to the acclaimed HENCH crew. Somewhat of a child prodigy, Justin started DJ-ing at an early age, and got his first set of decks aged 12. It was not long before Justin’s attention was caught by the burgeoning dubstep movement; inspired by the sounds of Skream and Digital Mystikz’s, he turned his hand to dubstep production early in 2008. Soon after, his debut release came out on Hatcha & N-Type’s ‘Croydon Dubheads’ EP. He recently was named alongside Emalkay and 16 Bit as one to watch in Radio 1xtra’s ‘Future Sound of Dubstep’. We’re proud to present Lost’s debut release on the Hench imprint and are sure that you’ll enjoy it.
A. IRONHIDE – Lost creates a seriously atmospheric mood from the start in Ironhide, building to a subtle drop of one mean reverbed wobbly bassline. A real creeper of a tune, the open hi-hat progresses throughout, giving way to a double time feel that’ll keep heads nodding. This is one serious weapon for your bag!
AA. SLAUGHTERED – Flip over for another bass-led rhythm, from Lost. Pushing a different tone from the A side (yet no less menacing), ‘Slaughtered’ immediately surrounds you with its rolling filtered wobble. This is one futuristic sounding bass riff. An echoey drum loop helps create an ambience and suspense to this track. With such a distinct vibe, you’re guaranteed to have the crowd putting their screwface’s on when this gets dropped.

Operating out of the same stable as Tectonic, Kapsize, Earwax and Caravan, Multiverse brings you a new label, Build, hitting the exciting space where Future Garage, Dubstep, UK Funky and all things Bass intersect. Headed up by renowned bass-music ambassador Baobinga, known for his massive releases on Soul Jazz (with Tayo & Spyda) and Trouble & Bass (with Detroit’s DJ Nasty), as well as his wide-ranging DJ sets across the globe (including an appearance at Fabric’s 10th Birthday this October), the first release on Build sees Baobinga joined by regular partner in crime I.D.
