New D&B Releases

AMLP01 The Mesozoic Era (Triple Snow White Vinyl) – Alaska Arctic Music 12″ Vinyl x 3
Limited edition (Triple Snow White Vinyl). Often choosing to position himself as an outsider, Alaska’s success has never been limited to that of the UK- orientated drum and bass scene. He has collaborated under the Paradox name with some of greatest contemporary musicians the world has to offer, including Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Shobha Gurtu, Toshinori Kondo and Bernie Worrell. His new album The Mesozic Era which is to be released on May 24th 2010, is the third in a trilogy of solo Alaska lp’s and a follow up to 2006’s successful Arctic Foundations. The stunning packaging boasts Triple Snow-White Vinyl and a Solid-Black Compact Disc, something that hasn’t been manufactured before in drum and bass. As a bonus, the CD includes more from the infamous Sample Me series – specially edited breakbeat samples for aspiring producers to loop and splice – and shows Alaska’s commitment to the grass roots of the scene, giving something back to the fans and those he’s inspired. When he’s not in the studio, Alaska is inevitably on tour and continues to entertain crowds with his live shows truly worldwide (having only just returned from Alaska shows in Australia). Armed only with his trusty Amiga, synths and a mic, he performs a truly live PA, reconstructing tracks from his back catalogue and editing beats on the fly. He has performed over 180 live PA’s covering Australia, USA, Asia, Europe and beyond, and continues to venture into unchartered territory to represent his sound. It’s been 4 years since the Arctic Foundations album and a decade has passed by for the fans of the Virtual Virtuosos LP so It’s about time Alaska delivered the third chapter to complete the ambient-jungle trilogy. Alaska has been living in sub-zero temperatures whilst programming the album, and the frostbite’s reflected in every avenue of the LP. The album features pure ambient-jungle, Sample Me drum patterns for producers to sample, downtempo drum and bass and the debut ambient collaboration of Alaska & Robert Manos plus famous trance siren Kirsty Hawkshaw returns for two numbers on the LP. Arctic Music has raised the bar to deliver unique formats for analogue and digital lovers alike, with stunning and beautiful Triple Snow-White Vinyl and Solid-Black Compact Disc packages. Both 12” vinyl and compact disc versions offer material exclusive to each format, and all solid-black disc versions feature extended mix’s taking the album a step further.

B Alaska – Denali’s Realm
C Alaska & Robert Manos – Dolorous

RECIPE007 Transfer / Block 305 – Skeptical Ingredients Records 12″ Vinyl
(EACH COPY COMES WITH A FREE RECIPE CARD FROM THE ARTIST)
After the success of Phobia’s giant 12’ on Ingredients (and killer Beef stew) the next instalment comes from an up & coming artist making waves in 2010. Ashley ‘Skeptical’ takes a step towards the deep, dubby vibes of underground Drum & Bass, harking back to oldskool Metalheadz with “Transfer” a bassline roller. Flip for ‘Block 305’ for some half-time mechanical minimalism, with it’s barrage of bass pinning you against the wall. With production like this you know this guy has plenty more to come, and this is the first of 3 12”s signed to the label. You’ve been warned! Skeptical comes correct with his steak dish!
Dj support Loxy, Spectrasoul, Storm, Phobia..

REDSEAL005 Judgement Day EP – Calibre Samurai Red Seal 12″ Vinyl x 2
Black Vinyl edition. In a coup of epic proportions, New Zealand imprint Samurai Red Seal has managed to obtain 4 exclusive tracks from the prolific musical genius that is Ireland’s Dominick Martin aka Calibre. In 2009 the third release on Red Seal was a 12” single from Calibre – ‘Ringtone’/’Jackoff’ (REDSEAL003) which was a massive success with DJs from around the globe. There was only one thing we could think of to follow that up, and that was twice the amount of music. As Calibre’s legions of followers will attest the man has endless styles and the ‘Judgement Day’ EP attempts to capture a different approach with each tune. The title tune ‘Judgement Day’ features the sultry but potent vocals of Samurai Music’s favourite MC/Vocalist DRS, on what can best be described as a stone groove. The vibe gets jagged on the awkward funk of ‘Trust’, a tune that seemingly wriggles it’s rhythm at you! ‘Don’t Want Your Love’ is a tour de force of soulful Drum and Bass, with every element combining into a soaring, rolling groove. Described by fans as possibly Calibre’s most powerfully emotive tune to date, we advise staying away from this tune during hangovers or relationship break ups. And finally, a proud dancefloor steam-train with a buzz saw reese, ‘Jungle One’ has been floating around in the sets of a chosen few for some time now and finally sees a full release. DJ support on this release has been unanimous, with the likes of Marcus Intalex, DJ Hype, LTJ Bukem, dBridge, DJ Friction, Doc Scott, London Elekricity, Spectrasoul, Cyantific, Nu Tone, Commix, Logistics, Lenzman, Jubei and many more!
“We’ll all beg for forgiveness on judgement day….”

New D&B Promos

NZ012 Be Strong / Point Pleasant – Soul Intent Samurai Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Returning sharply to the dancefloor, Nottinghams Soul Intent graces Samurai Music with another 2 potent riddims. ‘Be Strong’ issues a very timely bit of advice in the vocal department while jagged breaks funk their way into a bass drop that Dillinja would be proud of. The defining feature of the tune however comes midway thru the main section with a rollicking bongo section. This tune seems to have an immortal life on the dancefloor with ‘classic’ written all over it. ‘Point Pleasant’ once again opens with Mr Judd’s unique reworking of a classic break before dropping into a deep bassline groove that seems to forge classic Full Cycle with some of Reinforced’s mid 90′s flava’s. Featured on the recent ‘Drum and Bass’ Anthems Mix Cd compiled by Hospital Records.. Big DJ support on these 2 from Klute, Doc Scott, State Of Mind, Eveson, Crissy Criss, Kool FM, Mistajam & Radio 1′s Huw Stephens.

NONPLUS007 Ochre / Cascade Failure – Vaccine Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus 007 sees the Californian based producer Vaccine make her debut on the label with a brace of tracks in her signature style of rich musical textures and ingenious drum arrangements. With a wealth of releases on labels such as Hotflush and Tempa, its safe to say that quality control has never been an issue for her and this release is no exception.
a) Vaccine ‘Ochre’ – The a-side ‘Ochre’ with its scratchy lo-fi beats and rugged gliding bassline is textbook Vaccine. An abstract looping vocal brings an almost soulful edge to the track but it still remains tense and gritty throughout. Doing damage in clubs across the world but just as relevant at home, this track will stay in your playlist for the long haul.
aa) Vaccine ‘Cascade failure’ – Slightly mellower than the a-side but on more of an emotive tip, this track plays with orchestral “Burialesque” chords and melodies and really makes you get your thinking cap on. Once again her trademark lo-fi beats and percussion swirl around in seemingly effortless complex patterns, with layer upon layer of chords and melodies the track has so much depth its almost impossible to take it all in with just one listen.

A Vaccine – Ochre
AA Vaccine – Cascade Failure

SUBTITLESUK002 2098 / Yogurt Brainwave – Ulterior Motive Subtitles Music (UK) 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Ulterior Motive take you back to the future with ‘2098’, recalling pre- millennial tension with sci-fi atmospherics, genetically modified breaks and a bionic bassline straight out of the golden era of drum & bass. DJ support from the likes of Noisia, Ed Rush & Optical, Alix Perez, Jubei, Total Science, Commix and Break proves they’re doing it right. ‘Yoghurt Brainwave’ sees the UM boys swapping their trademark synths for full-fat funk bass and hinting there’s a heck of a lot more in their locker.
What the DJ’s are saying:
Ed Rush “Gonna be playing 2098 for an age, doing serious damage worldwide. More tunes like this please!”
dBridge “I wondered how long it would be for someone to come along and re-ignite the flame left to fade by others”
SP:MC “Optical left the gate open and these boys are coming right on through”
Jubei “These guys are like the Marty McFly & Doc Emmett Brown of drum & bass right now, bringing that funk back. As Ulterior Motive build momentum, we all wait with great anticipation”

ILL012 Gridline / They Could Love – Ill Skillz Vs Logistics Ill Skillz 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Those of you who’ve been around for a while will remember D.Kay & Rawfulls Illkillz alias. Their early tunes married cheeky trance riffs with grimy drum & bass sensibilities to devastating effect. 2010 sees them gear up for an album release and what better way to do that then by updating their sound for a deep and dark feel? Hospital Records’ Logistics comes along for the ride on Gridline a riotous effort that brings together immense techno sounds with grizzled bass notes and rolling drums. ‘They Could Love’ on the AA keeps things deep and dark, but delves even further into esoteric territory. We can’t wait for the album. (Words ATM Magazine May /June 2010).

LAB010 Burglar – Truth Aquatic Lab Records 12″ Vinyl
Wetting the appetite for the forthcoming ‘Puppets’ album, Aquatic Lab dish up two varied future bass experiments from Truth. First up ‘Burglar’ a tech-stepping original production bedded with sharp snapping drums & snares that bite straight through the rave atmospherics. Bass wise this piece of kit is extreme to say the least, signature bulbous sub action. ‘Dead Silence’ comes from a charged half step angle with complex percussion. The track features a glossy synth line. At it’s core it evolves to unleash deadly licks of bass at opportune moments. Both cuts are a prime pick for the steppers. Getting huge support from Mala, Skream, N-type, Hatcha and Joe Nice.

SENSELESS012 Zombiezz EP – Kanji Kinetic Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Senseless have always believed that the spirit of rave never died, it’s everywhere, but now in 2010 we’ve discovered that spirit distilled into its purest form, let’s call it essence of rave. Kanji Kinetic makes it, a monstrous hybrid of electro, bassline, jungle and, yes, rave. It doesn’t just deny classification, it smashes it to pieces. These tracks look backwards but sound like the future, they’re cheeky but deadly serious, they’re rough and smooth, sharp and blunt, sweet and sour, bouncy, wonky, hyper and just a little bit insane. In short, the ultimate party music. The EP is a game of two halves, easing you in at 140 BPM with a wonky mixture of futurebassline and pitch bent synths (ToyGuns) then rolling into the monstrous Scientist. Reach-for-the-lazers rave stabs and scorching bass collide to make something seriously dangerous. We then take a quick diversion for a remix from Kaiser, a newcomer with releases coming on Starkey’s Slit Jockey, who twists Toy Guns into a devastating mix of grime, 8bit bleeps and UK Funky syncopation, this is what it sounds like to be one of those ghosts being eaten by Pacman. Next up we turn up the pace for ‘New Era’, weighing in at 175 BPM, it’s the fastest thing we’ve ever released but its half time weight makes it feel like jungle chopped and screwed in the fifth dimension. Quite simply it has the biggest drop you will hear this year, possibly ever. It’s jungle tempo but drop this in a dubstep set and watch the floor ignite. The title track, Zombiezz also rocks 175 BPM on the half time but does it 4×4, cheeky cartoon samples and strings building to another seismic sub frequency workout. Finally Zombiezz gets two remixes, Cracks turn in something pretty special, taking things back down to 140 and turn in a mix they’re calling ‘Horror House’, a visceral mixture of techno, grime and lots of bass. Then just for fun we asked legendary hardtek producer 9MM to see if he could make Zombiezz a little harder, and he did. Enjoy! NB New Era and Zombiezz are being released as a split with our good pals Tigerbeat6, thanks guys.
PLAYS FROM: Raffertie, Starkey, Slugabed, Donna Summer, Kid606, Pirate Soundsystem, Chrissy Murderbot, The McMash Clan, Warlock, Subeena.

FRJ006 Angels Dub EP – Kuoyàh Frijsfo Beats 12″ Vinyl
Italy’s Marco Donnarumma indicated some of the potential of his Kuoyàh project with last April’s digital release for Frijsfo, earning enthusiastic tips from the likes of Boomkat. Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that his debut on wax ups the game – even in the face of a mix from Sully – by applying a focus capable of working magic in 2010′s open-ended dubstep dance. It’s an overused comparison that probably deserves to be buried, but Angel Dub does reek of Horsepower Productions, or more precisely the ducking 2-step and Basic Channel steals of Benny Ill’s classic Tempa EP with Hatcha. In this case laziness has been avoided, a sunstroked, hazy quality making it sound Kuoyàh’s own, and a judicious electronica dimension expanding the arrangement without falling into the IDM-ish trap of trying to ape something cleverer. That holds true even for the more downtempo Asia, which turns up the dub channel to find hordes of space-echo revenants chasing around. The thoroughly dust-less grooves of common soundsystem samples are absent, though, dropped for an unexpected reversioning of Artificial Intelligence bleep tones. On Soldiers, Donnarumma’s background in electroacoustic music and ambient is more obvious, in common with Chase The Comedown, 2009′s digital EP. It’s equally clear how he’s been sharpening this kind of line since then, refining trademark, half-dismantled bundles of beats to the point where everything is in just the right wrong place. Attention for this EP will understandably bend towards Sully’s Angels Dub remix, not without justification. It’s another great Jack Stevens beat, with pummelling sub-bass, arpeggios scrambled almost in the style of Zomby and an uncharacteristically martial drum track beating out something like an Addison Groove juke pattern. Kuoyàh himself, though, deserves just as much of your time on this one, trust us.

a1 Kuoyàh – Angels Dub
a2 Kuoyàh – Asia
b1 Kuoyàh – Soldiers
b2 Kuoyàh – Angels Dub (Sully Remix)

HENCH017 1986 Was The Future – Mensah Hench 12″ Vinyl
Visit Bristol and mention the name Mensah; chances are that someone’s going to know the man we’re talking about. Having become involved in the Bristol music scene at an early age, there’s no surprise that his productions epitomize the things associated with the city’s music – positivity and progressiveness. Having already lent the bouncy number, Pulse 80’s, to the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, and getting voted in the as one of the ‘Top 10 Producers to watch’ in the Dubstep Forum Awards, Mensah provides us with yet more reason to mark him down as one to keep an eye on in the future. The Untitled Future Funk EP is a 6 track release that provides a true insight into the depth of studio-skills this young artist has developed, touching on both the atmospheric and downright funky sides of dubstep. Already having had a track placed on the CSI TV series (Stapleton Rd) and with all tracks receiving regular play from the scene’s big hitters, we’re excited to present this stunning effort from Mensah.
A. 1986 WAS THE FUTURE – The synth-led chords from the outset of this tune frame it as a future classic of dubstep. Not holding back when the bassline drops, Mensah has crafted a sound that delivers a punch. A truly gripping production that keeps you locked, seeming to introduce new sounds and phrases whilst maintaining its esoteric feel. ‘1986 Was The Future’ is going to be one of those tunes that’ll have the dancefloor screaming for rewind after rewind – and we’re sorry, but you’re going to be obliged to give it to them! Currently being rinsed by the likes of Plastician, Starkey and L-Vis.
AA1. ACID DUB – On a slightly different tip, Mensah hits us with something a little more accustomed to the HENCH imprint’s sound. Commencing with that familiar steppy vocal, the background interference builds into a seemingly mechanical drop – lifting and taking all with it. A truly funky production that guarantees to turn the party to a full-on warzone when that bassline drops – no wonder the likes of Skream, Bok Bok and Baobinga have been smashing this one.
AA1. UNTITLED FUTURE FUNK – Guiding us in with tripped-out synths and a gentle kick-drum, this one drops subtly. ‘Untitled Future Funk’ is a wonderfully unique production that sits perfectly as an end-of night tune that is as progressive as it is moody. The track develops introducing extra synth to compliment that jagged kick-drum bassline. This track says more about Mensah’s production style than any of his previous releases; daring, innovative and effortlessly funky. Support from Mistajam, Joker, Plastician, Noah D, Von D and more.

DUBLINE005 15 Karat – Mark Instinct Dubline 12″ Vinyl x 2
Dubline Audio’s next release is graced by the talents of Canada’s Mark Instinct. 15 Karat is a dangerous EP, the tracks are armed to the teeth and ready to create havok amongst dancefloors world wide. Each track is an dimensional example of Dubstep’s exploration into the technology of future bass music. Worth its weight in gold, and as intended each of the four tracks are deployed as weapons of the DJ’s arsonal amongst their crates. 4 tracks that are sure fire hits. The predetermined target aimed to the dance with the sight set to annilate the crowd. Thick basslines, dope beats, and smashing drums set the pace in this artistic approach of a surreal instinctual bass killer. Prepare to nod the head as gangster beats dominate the ether airwaves of all those that set ears to Mark Instincts – 15 Karat EP – Dubline Audio 05. You have been warned. PL009 Interpretazioni EP – The Subdivision Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl
The SubDivision round up some of some of dubstep’s heaviest and dirtiest mercenaries for the latest Paradise Lost offering of 4 remixes on the Interpretazioni EP. Roguestar starts things off with what can only be considered an epic remix of an already epic track, Devil’s Kiss. Full throttle from the start and straddling the line between dubstep and breakstep, this track will appeal to anyone needing to destroy the floor at 3AM. Lonewolf goes dirt for his remix of The Messenger, bringing the heat with his notorious filthy style, incorporating heavy synths with nasty breaks. On the flip, Djunya takes things to the dark side of dub, with his re-take on the bizzarely spacey Elephant Walk. Currently a favorite of DJs pushing the deeper sounds, Djunya brings in heavy reverbs, 8-bit stabs, and his trademark bassline business to produce a brilliant and complex sound. Vesicle round off the release with what might be their heaviest production yet on the remix of The Rose. Junglist vibes and bass terrorism combine to produce devastating material showing off the impressive skills of these up-and-comers from Finland. With something for everyone on this release, Paradise Lost is going from strength to strength.

HFT012 The Let Down – George FitzGerald Hotflush Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Hotflush Recordings proudly present the debut release from new London-based producer George FitzGerald. Part of the Man Make Music collective, George FitzGerald comes as the latest addition to the Hotflush Two roster. A perfect illustration of contemporary electronic production in a post-Hyph Mngo era, Fitzgerald continues the Hot Flush Two archetypal strand of dubstepnot- dubstep, referencing elements of Basic Channel-esque dub and ambience embedded into the jagged groove of modern UK garage. DJ support so far comes from Scuba, Joy Orbison and Appleblim.

PIPS012 Untitled / Digest – Joe Apple Pips 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. With the success of our last releases getting props and plays from DJs as diverse as Erol Alkan, DJ T, Martyn, Deetron, & Rob Da Bank we are really excited to present our next slice of futuristic funk for your ears and booty from the extremely talented Joe. With his debut, the awesome ‘Grimelight’, being released on Hessle Audio, Joe is part of a loose group of likeminded and future thinking producers & DJs that includes Hessle Audio’s Ramadanman, Ben UFO, & Pangaea, and Untold & James Blake. Whilst they all have very individual sounds, they share a vision of dubstep, uk funky, techno & house influenced beats that seem to defy genre. The A-side ‘Untitled’ is a huge stepping wad of funk, bringing to mind 2-step, early Skream & Benga, even stripped down grime classics like Pulse X, but with a truly contemporary twist. This tune drops hard, and has been a secret weapon of Appleblim’s for some time now – he was pleasantly surprised to see ravers of all ages go mad to it! The flip sees Joe’s more experimental leanings come out on ‘Digest’, but he never forgets the groove and funk. With rolling percussion, steppy sub bass and shiny analogue synth stabs cutting through, it seems to us like a mixture of Mala from Digital Mystikz and Theo Parrish! High praise indeed…
DJ/Radio support coming from Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 1), Modeselektor, Peverelist, Rob Da Bank (Radio 1/Bestival), Paul Woolford, Ramadanman, Brackles, Appleblim & many more.

BLR004 What U Got / Fix – Martin Kemp Blunted Robots 12″ Vinyl

To celebrate the 4th Robots release, we locked Martin Kemp in a small room and told him to make a club smasher like Citizens Dub <http://www.myspace.com/bluntedrobots> A week later, we let him out, only to find he’d spent his time making more weird House mutations and sampling tribal men. We wouldn’t want him any other way. DJs showing love include Loefah, Brodinski, Seiji, Jackmaster, Joy Orbison, Ben UFO and MA1

DP038 Badman Sound / SlowDown – Doctor P / Trolley Snatcha Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Dub Police continue to release some of the scenes most in demand tunes and this single is no exception. The man of the minute Doctor P steps up with a serious club banger in the shape of ‘Badman Sound’, which has gained huge support from the likes of Caspa, N-Type, Skream, The Others & many more of the scenes big hitters. Squelching bass, tonk beats and a serious catchy lead that you will be singing for days after; all combined to make this one massive track! The flip side doesn’t take any prisoners either, but this time it’s the turn of the man who spends way too much time hanging around outside supermarkets; Trolley Snatcha. Featured on the Scion A/V & Dub Police CD, ‘Slow Down’ will already be well known by a lot of you eager dubhunters out there with it’s relentless basslines, stomping beats and cheeky Middle Eastern melodies. All in all this is a single you can’t afford to pass on – an essential slab of plastic from Dub Police once again

DVA005 New World Order – DVA DVA Music 12″ Vinyl
The latest releases from a Producer famous for his persistent abuse of 4×4 convention, Scratcha DVA presents the New World Order EP on his own DVA Music imprint. Showcasing 4 tracks from a range of Producers the EP opens with a pair of brand new Scratcha DVA productions. The title tracks bomb shelter rave dynamics combine spiraling synths, warm organ stabs and heaving bass tones to apocalyptic effect while its companion ‘Schizophrenic’ lives up to its name, alternating a floor filling 8 bit 2 tone skank with churning Grime synths at their most sour. The flipside offers up Roska ally Uncle Bakongo’s brutally stripped down take on Soule Power’s= ‘Lost’, pairing industrial strength drums with decaying vocal snippets and brooding keys before a last minute change of pace resolves the vocal tension. S.Chu’s rounds out the EP with a reworking of his ‘Quickfoot’, fully equipped with a slow burn bass line and shimmering synth arpeggios. Please no sharing. Feel free to get in touch for more info.

SENSELESS013 Zarbak – Pacheko & Pocz Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The phrase ‘tropical’ is currently getting used to describe a lot of different music; some good, some bad, some ugly. To save on confusion Senseless went out and travelled the world to find some music from the actual tropics, Venezuela to be precise. Somewhere buried deep in the mysterious rainforest, or possibly just in a studio in Caracas, they found Pocz and Pacheko. It’s so near the equator maybe we can ditch the ‘tropical bass’ tag and go for something new, ‘equatorial bass’ perhaps? Maybe not. Pacheko, Francisco Mejia, will be familiar to some for his solo releases on Lo Dubs, Murder Channel, Seclusiasis and for his work with legendary Venezualan expat Cardopusher. His partner in bass Pocz (Carlos Majoral) is a classically trained musician and production engineer. Along with a select few others they run Abstractor, a collective of producers, artists and designers, who promote parties, run a blog and do a fine job of representing bass music in Venezuela pretty much solo. The collective includes graphic artist Design or Die who is responsible for the incredible artwork and pretty special video for ‘Zarbak’. Together by day Pocz and Pacheko run a sound design studio in the rum fuelled pressure cooker of political and social unrest that is Caracas. Their training in high-end audio engineering is evident in the quality and weight of the production. Nights are spent in the tropical heat cooking up beats. Over the years an audio diet that includes salsa, merengue, reggaeton and other local music mixed with old jungle tapes, Rinse FM sets and lots of dub has helped them to build a unique and captivating sound that combines all those things.
The spirit of hardcore, jungle and garage from the UK are all evident from the UK Funky rhythms and rumbling sub bass in ‘Zarbak’ to the melancholy melodic refrains of ‘Dorado’ but there’s something else there too. There’s something tribal in the drums that taps into a deep history of Latin American percussive rhythms and adds a dimension that is clearly their own. If UK bass is about the energy and pressure of the city at night then Caracas bass about the point where the intensity of the city meets the wide open space of the jungle, the beach and the mountains under a carpet of stars. Put the needle on the record, close your eyes and imagine it. Also, there’s remixes from Brackles (Blunted Robots/Planet Mu) and Mr Gasparov (Soul Jazz).

RED039 Defsteppah EP – Deformer Redrum Recordz 12″ Vinyl
Deformer hailing from Rotterdam city, The Netherlands, is a strong player amongst the progressive electronic music scene for years already and are about to release a new 3 track e.p. entitled ‘Defsteppah’. Where Deformer normally sets the tone with innovative Jungle or quality Breakcore, they now give new direction to the Dubstep genre in their own onorthodox way. The Defsteppah E.P.
Kicks off with the title track and a roots Reggae atmosphere soon turns into a vicious bass driven stepper with angry, yet conscious lyrics of Mike Redman and Scapu Lox on top. The second track ‘Damien Dub’ already found it’s way to the underground club audience and is becoming a party favorite. A twisted rave line holds together a complicated drum pattern while a foundation of solid bass slowly mangles your hearing bone. ‘Extreme Deformity’, the third track on this e.p. is a quite original track which fuses the typical Rotterdam Hardcore sound with deep Dubstep. From the one into another in just a matter of minutes. Not for softies… The Defsteppah e.p. is a limited edition release and has an incredible lasered picture pattern on the B side of the disc. It will not be repressed.

For the third instalment of the OpenEarz journey through the full spectrum of dubstep sounds, Dom Hz supplies a diverse 3 track EP showcasing his technically gifted production and representing his broad music tastes. Mist opens the EP with warm pads and enchanting atmospherics. The intro sets the pace, but doesn’t prepare you for the plunging drop and sub bass pressure! This is a high calibre skanker with a weightline ready to test any system! Easing nicely into the flipside Dom constructs infectious jazz melodies and lounge vibes for Elevator Skank, bringing through influences from house, jungle and dub to create a warm roller, definitely a summer vibes track!

New D ‘n’ B Releases

CRIT044 Canopy – FD, Hydro & Keza Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
New blood alert! Bringing through yet more untapped talent is the people’s choice, Critical Music, who bring us the debut release from a trio of boxfresh producers that’s already been doing damage with those lucky enough to have it. With FD being one of the brains behind possibly the most forward-thinking drum and bass event in London, Medium, you know before listening the force is strong on this one. Beautifully breezy pads open up ‘Canopy’ and a straight down the line break gets things moving nicely as added percussion seaps in along the way before the drop. Out go the pads and in comes a refreshingly spacious arrangement of percussive FX and thumping deep subs perfect for those dark late-night dance floors. Wait for the sumptuous atmospherics to return and you can’t help but be swept away by the groove as it carries us all the way to the end. A bit special. Then on to ‘Remorse’ and the guys spook things out a little with a ghostly whispered samples and an off-kilter break rolling under paranoid synth stabs and pads. As more booming subs kick in the pace picks up with shuffling snares and heavily filtered sonics that fill the speakers to drive it forward hard, while still retaining a huge sense of space that’ll see this in the DJ boxes at the deeper end of the spectrum.
Big support from Nu:Tone, Jubei, Spectrasoul, Alix Perez, Kasra, Logistics, Sabre and more.

As a promoter, he helped to throw some of the first raves and jungle events in the East Coast’s Mid-Atlantic region. And, as a musician, he is responsible for numerous releases and remixes on labels such as Vibez, Covert Operations, Vampire, Nexus (Good Looking), Levitated, Red Mist, Testflight, Elektra/Warner Brothers and more. CYAN033 Dark Times (State Of Mind Remix) – Bulletproof, Mindscape & Tiki Cyanide Recordings 12″ Vinyl
As a follow up remix 12” to the “DARK TIMES-DESPERATE MEASURES” LP, Bulletproof and Cyanide Recordings enlisted the remixing skills of two names synonymous with pushing the boundaries in the art of cutting edge beats. Fellow Kiwis, STATE OF MIND step up to the plate to deliver an absolutely tearing rollout of one of LP title tracks “DARK TIMES”. Comparable in style to tracks like “Bring it on” this remix has been smashing its way around the world for quite some time now, and state of mind show why they are such a force to be reckoned with when it comes to remixing hard hitting Dance floor tunes. Definitely one of their finest remixes to date. On the flipside, Still enjoying the success of his new album on NEOSIGNAL, Cyanide welcomes back to the roster, the one and only “MISANTHROP”. His rendition of Bulletproof Psidream & Doses LINE OF SIGHT takes the idea of remixing to a whole new level. Incorporating minimal elements of the original and giving them that futuristic Misanthropic twist is why he was the man signed up for the job.

RDR001 Your Way / Daydreamin – Netsky Radar Records 12″ Vinyl
Drum&bass has been booming in Belgium for some time. At the spearhead of the movement is Murdock, a dj who has been a weekly guest on Belgian national radio for years, and plays to thousands of people at all of Belgium’s biggest festivals, year in, year out. Coinciding with the release of his Jungle Fever mix cd, he now launches Radar Records, inspired by the incredible talent of his protege Netsky, an artist who has risen through the ranks of drum&bass like few have done before him. It will come to no surprise that the first release on this newly founded label is by the hands of this prodigy and with the smooth stylings of ‘Your Way’ (over 140.000 hits on Youtube) and the massive dancefloor liquid anthem that ‘Daydreamin’ is set to become, this looks like a sure winner. In the future more Netsky oddities will appear on Radar, but Murdock himself and friends slash artists like Jenna G are destined to make an appearance as well. The first 12inch has already gained support by Grooverider, Fabio, London Electricity and many more.

CRIT045 Redlines – Total Science Ft. Riya Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. As we head into the warmer months camp Critical brings a true sunshine release from one of D&B’s tour de force production duos, Total Science. The original jungle dons push all the right buttons here as they team up with Riya for a sumptuous vocal excursion like no other. ‘Redlines’ has already been given the thumbs up by the likes of Mistajam and Ras Kwame on BBC Radio 1/1xtra and it’s not hard to see why. A solid locked groove rolls from the start on this one with a polished break and beautiful melancholic piano hook that draw you in before the real treat begins; when Riya’s gorgeous vocal drops in your heart will melt.
Effortless audio bliss for all the lovers out there. Things then toughen up 10-fold on the flip as the Total Science party boys drop ‘Skinz’, a crisp and dry piece of Bristol-esque D&B with a thugged-out b-line that’s had clubs shaking all over for the past six months.

MODULE001 More Than I Can Take / Silhouette – Lenzman Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Critical Music are proud to announce for 2010 their all-new sibling imprint, Modulations. Already known as a camp with the utmost values in exceptional music and artistic design, Modulations promises to be something very special indeed. The schedule will include artists old and new with each release coming on 10” high grade virgin vinyl in a gorgeous slick housebag. A discerning product for the discerning D&B fan. So first up is the much touted Lenzman who’s been handed the privilege of opening up Modulations for business and what a job he’s done. ‘More Than I Can Take’ is a gorgeous piece of subtle audio bliss that sets the standard high for future releases to come. Light pads, sparkling key tones and a staggered break pave the way on the intro up to a luscious drop of warm bass and a male vox. Things drift smoothly on with the addition of a gnarly mid-range that toughens things up a little whilst all the time retaining the initial spacial, deep vibe. Lovely.‘Silhouette’ on the other side then takes things in a slightly moodier direction with a simple 2-step break leading the way but with more of those ethereal pads wafting over the top before a sinsitar bline takes over with some nasty edits and a souled out vocal sample to calm the nerves. An awesome way to finish off the first release of what will no doubt be a highly collectable electronic music label. DJ support from Goldie, Logistics, Kasra, Nutone, Spectrasoul, Friction and many more.

DSM014 The Visitor – Data Deep Soul Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The first DSM release of the new decade sees them continue to push leftfield, forward thinking drum & bass. 2009 was big year for Data with releases on Revolution, Horizons, premier dubstep label Tempa aswell as the mighty Metalheadz and for his first release of 2010 he returns to DSM with two tracks that cement his reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative producers in drum & bass at the moment. ‘The Visitor’ sees him come with a slightly different style than his previous releases with the stripped back, stepping intro giving way to skipping high hats that drive the track forward and a monstrous distorted Reese bassline reminiscenbt of late 90’s techstep. For the AA side he teams up with newcomer Kingsin for ‘Baggage’, and it is perhaps Data at his most experimental with sharp, staccato, almost off beat drums and haunting synth lines coupled with a his trademark growling bass. Both sides show a diversity in his production and goes to prove he is not one to stick to any particular style, but rather constantly innovate and push boundaries with his music.

Lead by a thumping kick, this one is a dub-lovers dream, flowing with loads of effects, echo and perfectly-timed ragga vocals. There’s a lot of space in this one, allowing the elements to breathe, and the atmospherics feel like the soundtrack to the moon overtaking the sun. On the flip, Outrage’s “K Zero 9” finally makes it way to the record bins. This one has been tearing things down in its slow-burning venom, and is the perfect lick to get the party started, or send a ready crowd into a frenzy with its hypnotic bass. While the dub-side of Drum & Bass seems to be almost forgotten, its good to know that the torchbearers are still around, injecting tough riddims for those who know. -Khal (dogsonacid.com)

SENSELESS012 Zombiezz EP – Kanji Kinetic Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. The EP is a game of two halves, easing you in at 140 BPM with a wonky mixture of future-bassline and pitch bent synths (ToyGuns) then rolling into the monstrous Scientist.

3024008 Titan EP – lllum Sphere 3024 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. “Titan.” Sometimes titles are just perfect, aren’t they? It’s a huge, sprawling beast that seems to inhale every mutant strain of bass music it can and exhales it in one exhilarating 4:20 blast. It opens with ominous rumbling and 8-bit bleeps (and crickets?) before ambient chords ascend out of the depths, dragging a twisting electro synth with them. That pulsating, spiraling synth slinks its way through the gossamer membranes of the track, contracting and expanding as needed, its bulbous, serrated ends emanating industrial howls like ghosts of rave sirens. Clinking percussion desperately tries to keep the track in line, but it bursts from its foundations for split seconds, causing little blips and beeps, interruptions, skitters, grasping feverishly at its surroundings; eventually the percussion splinters into fragments and things open out for a few moments, but a synthline this big can’t stay dormant for long, returning with hymnal chords in behind it, hovering, until the percussion comes back in, lockstep in with the riff as if resigned to the fact that it can never overcome something this massive. On previous releases, Illum Sphere’s fallen more into the post-Dilla FlyLo camp (what are we calling this stuff these days anyway?). His two EPs on Fat City have been impressive, but this new threetrack release on Martyn’s 3024 label sees him moving into slightly more dance-oriented waters, appropriating techno into his repertoire of subtly stomping tunes. ” “Go Killum” acts as a brief interlude, two minutes of mangled synth strewn about a deserted battlefield, canned, distorted gunshots taking the place of drums. The track takes neon brightness and submerges it in murky waters, the distorted beat only letting up for a few seconds of melodic prettiness before it stomps back in and chokes the life out of it all over again, until the blue turns to grey. It feels a little bit like a palate cleanser, a little morsel of whirling synths to clear out your tastebuds for the next psychedelic main dish. “Technopolis” is just that, its tumbling piano keys hoisted aloft on a pulsing techno beat and misty-eyed chords. He even finds time to set bass notes off like depth charges, overbalancing the track and scattering silvered notes onto the breeze. It wafts along like a classic techno track, gentle drums and glossy synths, as gentle strings pluck a nearly inaudible melody deep beneath the surface, in the sewers and slums of the technopolis, the unheard masses keeping the tune afloat. It’s an evocative track, dipping its toes into the past but never falling deep into the whirlpool of nostalgia, and even if it did, the indefatigable energy of “Titan” would pull it out right away, like a crazed dog on a leash.

HENCH017 1986 Was The Future – Mensah Hench 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy.

RWINA007 Goin Out EP – SRC Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Fresh from Birmingham comes young talent SRC delivering the ‘Goin Out EP’ for the Rwina imprint. Stuffing old school 8-bit sensibilities and new school Grime attitude into a blender and hitting puree, SRC slings sizzling synths and punchy basslines with devastating effect. From the casual g-funk of ‘Goin Out’ and ‘Sort of a Start’ to the skank-u-like shuffle of ‘Facepalm’ and the Danjah-esque ‘Where’s the Remote?’, this EP contains Grime riddims that will fill every dancefloor with hypercolors, power-ups and neon-lights, like Pacman duelling with Mario in the dark. With all this in mind, SRC makes the case that he’s one to watch for the future, and with a workrate to match the hype, you can expect a lot more where this came from! DJ support comes from the distinguished likes of Starkey, Swindle, Elijah & Skilliam, Taz Buckfaster, Baobinga, Terror Danjah and many more…

After the success of Data’s “Blowpipe” on LD5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like Metalheadz, Critical, Revolution and Tempa, Data brings us a grimy gem in the form of “Liberty City Blues”. Incident from Hungary and Paul SG from Austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent Knowledge Magazine cover CD mix. “Liberty City Blues” is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early Photek or Source Direct. From the outset the tune just bubbles with menace and keeps on building and evolving throughout. A pure bass-heavy slice of proper jungle. “Autumn Drops” is a soulful roller that shows that this crew are ones to watch in 2010. Full of melancholy, icy vibes and a subtle basslinethat gets right under your skin, this track is a firm favourite for this year

DARKESTRALEX002 Dreadtone / Timeloss – Consequence Darkestral Excursions 12″ Vinyl

LIMITED EDITION 500 copies manufactured on white with black streaks vinyl, in black reverse board, with overprinted pantone logo. Following the Keep an Eye On section accolade and 5/5 Album review ‘..downright essential’ in current edition of Mixmag, Consequence’s debut Darkestral release comes as the second in the Excursions series. ‘Dreadtone’ and ‘Timeloss’ are two essential forays into the zero gravity production style Consequence is rapidly building a name for. Heavy as molasses and just as thick atmospherically, both tracks have an almost dread-step feel to them, gaseous air pervading the cinemascopic textures and construction and warm deep bass as an undercarriage.

BLUSYNC002 Sampler 2 Sync: Saphir LP – Electrosoul System / Bionic1 Blu Saphir 12″ Vinyl

For the second sampler of the Sync:Saphir album collaboration, the sounds are switched up a bit, bringing in a very heavy remix of Electrosoul System’s Fun (from BLUS004) and newcomer BIONIC1′s Love Machine. These two tunes put a new spin on the usual Blu Saphir and Syncopix releases you’re used to, bringing deep, techy, rolling vibes to the table. You’re all used to Henree, spitting out releases over the last five years on the likes of Blindside, Deep Kut, Sound Trax, Lucky Devil, Phunkfiction, Soul:R and Vampire. BIONIC1 is a newcomer to Drum & Bass, but he’s got a rolled out sound that’s not to be missed!

A. ELECTROSOUL SYSTEM — FUN (HENREE REMIX) Before listening to this remix, you might want to revisit the original to notice the change in texture and sound. Henree definitely lays it down with this remix. Bass heavy and driving, you’ll feel bass quakes rolling through the floor as this one passes through the sound system. The opening resembles the original, but that’s all you’re going to get that hasn’t really changed. The moody chord progression that is stabilized throughout the track is enough to make a spine tingle, while the minimal vocal adds spice and atmosphere to an already amazing work. Very melodic and uplifting, an excellent choice in remix selection for this record!

B. BIONIC1 — LOVE MACHINE There is no one word to describe this track. One second you’re locked inside some type of futuristic space encounter, and then bombarded by techy stabs and vicious bass in the next. Following a sexy and seductive vocal, “Wanna go for a ride?,” all chaos breaks loose! Rolling tech funk is the name of the game here! Fans of labels like DNAudio, Black Reign LTD, Quarantine, Critical and Shadow Law will want to check into this one!

SUPPORT: MARCUS INTALEX, DJ MARKY, RANDOM MOVEMENT, S.P.Y AND MANY MORE.

ISP002 Blip / Vansan (Gatekeeper remix) – Gatekeeper / Appleblim If Symptoms Persist 12″ Vinyl

A nice quick follow-up to a great first release on Wedge’s new label ISP,….this time by his good friend Gatekeeper. As the name suggests, ‘Blip’ on….the A centres around an incessant beep motif, slowly treated and effectedover time as the tune develops – sliding breaks, deep punchy bass, and then those gorgeous shimmering chords evolving throughout. On the B, Gatekeeper tackles Appleblim’s Skull Disco anthem ‘Vansan’ – expounding the original themes of texture created by delay and reverb and incorporating them into a 140bpm technical jungle piece. 9/10 [recommended] DJ Thinking IDJ Magazine.

SHB007 Non Fiction / The Mirage – Cern / Duo Infernale Shady Brain 12″ Vinyl
A: Cern, ‘Non Fiction’ Without a doubt Cern from New Zealand is one of the most promising artists the current Drum and Bass scene has to offer. Collaborations with like minded artists such as dBridge, Loxy, Phace and Misanthrop, Logistics, and Bulletproof speak for themselves. Cern’s shadybrain debut ‘Non Fiction’ underlines what he is about, providing a sick breakbeat groove right from the beginning just to develop into a true techfunk influenced subbass monster. AA: Duo Infernale, ‘The Mirage’ Releasing tunes on labels such as Soul:r, Timeless Recordings, Dispatch, as well as Horizons and being featured on Marcus Intalex’ top selling Fabric Live CD, Duo Infernale are two of the most successfull Drum and Bass artists to break through from Germany. With their new release ‘The Mirage’ on shadybrain, they take their work to another level. Futuristc and techno influenced sounscapes meet an incredible deepness all covered up by a hypnotizing drumgroove.

SUBS007 Logic Gate – Machine Code Subsistenz 12″ Vinyl
Subsistenz is back once again with another 1st for the dnb scene, bringing two peak-time floor peddlers from the freshest collaboration to come out of the subdivision camp – Machine Code aka Current Value & Dean Rodell – Neither of these two producers need introductions to any of the scenes they are planning to manipulate as these two heavy weights of the underground have been outputting quality release after release for over 20 years between them. Now after a few months of working the machines at the Subdivision Studio in Berlin, the stock piled arsenal is ready to be broadcast and inflicted upon the minions. The Machine Code project formed out of a true respect and passion for Techno-orientated dance music and has been personified in this bar-raising first broadcast – Logic Gate … A. Logic Gate is kick-started with Mechanisms, a full-on techno assault that builds from a spine-chilling, vocal-fused pad that is gradually manipulated around a rhythm that pounds the living life out of its tonal timbres. The subtle manipulations in sound are brought to a head when the mechanisms turn to a 4/4-driven bass stomp, giving all insundry a life line to clasp onto … B. Thermal Stress doesn’t let up in Logic Gates mission to remove charred brain cells from its listeners’ dusty caverns. A brutal attack
of constant clinical pressure builds and binds sound scapes to a point of pure audio hedonism. With no remorse for the cranked and perverted – Machine Codes infiltrating has begun – - – Lock Up Your Synths !!!

NZ010 Stone Cold Killa – Soul Intent Samurai Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Samurai Music celebrates it’s 10th release by taking apart the dancefloor with 2 surefire aural bombs from Nottinghams’ Soul Intent. ‘Stone Cold Killa’ grinds in with cavernous heavy breakbeats, while the tone of impending carnage is set with ice cold ambience. A brief pause for the “..you’re a Stone Cold Killer” vocal before the hideously twisted bass riff unwinds itself into a drop that has been known to evacuate glassware from surrounding surfaces in clubs with systems capable of facilitating this tunes full power. The ultimate opening tune we suggest you save this piece of dangerous weaponry for situations that call for the heaviest artillery possible. ‘Conflict’ recalls golden moments in the tech step era with militant stepping breaks and a savagely warped bassline that bounces around with gleeful menace. It’s blatantly obvious that Mr Soul Intent was on a serious mission of hurting dancefloors in the days these two bass heavy monsters were created. We are proud to celebrate our 10th release by sharing their might with the rest of the planet. DJ’s that saw the need to draw for true power have been people like Klute, State Of Mind, Bailey, Eveson, Randall, Kasra, Cern, Phobia, Bulletproof and many more besides…

NONPLUS002 Watching You – Instra:mental Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Instra:mental present the second release from their Nonplus imprint after the hugely successful Nonplus 001 ‘Wonder Where’ / ‘No Future’. This release consists of two tracks from Instra:mental. Again, the A side contains the vocal talent of frequent collaborator dBridge, and for the B side they switch up the style into what can only be described as Dub Techno. a) Instra:mental ‘Watching You’ stands up to the quality levels set by Nonplus 001 and continues the fusion of original vocals, Detroit influenced chords and their trademark tight percussion. Ice-cold robotic vocals and heart-warming chord stabs will make the hairs on your neck stand on end listen after listen. This tune is a timeless piece of music that no amount of jargon can justifiably explain. If you like the recent output from these guys then you will love this tune. aa) Instra:mental ‘Tramma’ is a 4/4 offering made of elements from Dub, Techno and DnB but is hard to pigeonhole into any particular genre. For descriptive purposes well call it dub techno. Once again we can hear their influences from all things electronic, and here we have an example of the variance that we expect from Nonplus and a glimpse of the vision that Instra:mental have for the future of this label.

EXIT016 Melodies feat Mike Knight – Spectrasoul Exit Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Spectrasoul provide their debut single on Exit Records, which consists of two tracks written especially for the label. These two producers have proved their talent time and time again with a string of releases over the past two years and are definitely ones to watch in 2009/10. ‘Melodies’ is a clever combination of melancholic synth samples, used courtesy of legendary minimal electronica producers Isan, featuring the vocal talents of up and coming American RnB singer Mike Knight. An unconventional beat pattern makes this track stand out from the crowd and provides a refreshing break on the dancefloor. ‘Insignia’ comes with similar vibes on the B side, starting off with emotive pads and vocal snippets, dropping with low down sub stabs over another unconventional but highly effective beat. Both tracks have had support on the highly acclaimed autonomic podcasts (www.clubautonomic.com) and are receiving heavy rotation from DJs such as dBridge, Instramental and Dubstep pioneer DJ Skream, which highlights the versatility of these tracks and the potential to cross into Dj sets from different genres.

SUBTLE003EP Some Shit Saaink – Macc & dgoHn Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy. Time to enter the insane, weird, drum-centric world of Macc & dgoHn as the Subtle Audio camp proudly delivers its first artist-album by this pair of not altogether insane East Londoners.Subtle Audio has been pushing Drum & Bass with a slighly different slant for over four years now and this album could well be presented as their mission statement, it sums up the distinctive sound of the label perfectly. Macc & dgoHn favour a breakbeat driven style and they incorporate their beats into ever shifting cinematic arrangements brim full of attitude and experimentation. Individually, their sounds have travelled far beyond the Drum & Bass microcosm and their works have been aired by the likes of Zane Lowe and Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1. Aphex Twin is also an admirer and his festival playlists have contained Macc or dgoHn on more than one occasion. Now they unleash a volley of material from their collaborative archive which is set to disarm critics who thought Drum & Bass had run out of rhythms, arrangements and silly album titles. No fear on that, “Some Shit Saaink” is here!

RAMP022CD One Foot Ahead Of The Other – Zomby Ramp Recordings CD
Once upon a time, there was a band called The Cure, who had a front man named Robert Smith. Robert was an emotional being, who was always looking to test his boundaries and search out new experiences. After touring the Germany in the early 80’s with his band of eyeliner encrusted over-emotional Goth-men, Robert began a non-sexual but intensely intimate relationship with Florian Schneider, front man of Electro forefathers, Kraftwerk. The unlikely couple decided to experiment with the then new science of gene splicing. After a few horrific failed attempts, they finally managed to successfully cross their DNA into the vessel of a baby boy. Months past, and it became disturbingly apparent that they two men, who at the time were at the peaks of their careers, had created a being of pure evil. They decided to enlist the help of the 4’2 purple sex-pest Prince to drown the young baby in a sea of colours and tears, and try as hard as they can to move on with their lives alone, ever trying to forget the horrific experiences the child had graced upon their lives. For many years, the baby’s soul circled the earth, crying pixels and watching women get undressed in locker rooms and stuff, for he is just a soul, and invisible to the human eye, and can get away with that kind of thing. The child found out there was a way to come back from the dead in some kind of Hellraiser type puzzle themed ritual, and hark, the boy (who was now a man) did indeed rise from the dead, and yes, he did once again walk the earth with the sole intent of wrong-doing. That boy is Zomby, and this is his new CD.

MEDI015 Dark Path – Goth Trad Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Sickness from Goth-Trad on Mala’s label, with perhaps his best twelve to date. ‘Dark Path’ on the A is an exercise in dub technology, thick slabs of bass overlaid with eastern melodies and mad FX. Percussion and snares are treated with heavy delays, pinging around like auditory hallucinations, building a framework upon which to hang the wistful chords and gentle flute topline. The flip is just as involving, stabbing wind samples and off-kilter hats readying you for sub undulations, runnin beats and mental bendy midrange noises. (Words C/O diccon IDJ Mag Issue 116)

ARGLP02_2 The Incredible Adventures Of Kenzolika & Quetzalcoatl Among The Air Castles Part2 – Blasta Argon Records 12″ Vinyl
Blasta met Kenzolika, Kyiv’s dubstep princess, in November 2008. It all started with a coincidence – the owls were falling, and they keep falling now. Blasta is a musician based in Vaska, St. Petersburg, Russia. Each tune on the album is filled with pure sweet emotions. Feel the tension in “Your Dub Delay”, a poignant cosmic dubstep anthem with vocals by Blasta. It doesn’t matter if you are drinking the “Black Muscatel” wine, drifting through the clouds inside a “Zeppelin Nacelle”, or just chilling and dancing slowly with beautiful girls inside the “Cosmic Lounge”. “This LP is something that has popped up from nowhere and is to be one of the best dance album’s I’ve heard in years, tracks like ‘Cosmic Lounge’ & ‘Black Muscatel’ are strong power plays from myself in the clubs and have had people singing with joy to the melodies or clenching their hearts with emotion – sumthing you don’t see in the clubs these days anymore due to the lack of good music played by the top DJs. Other tempo’s on the album shows the talent that Blasta really has with music making…….This album WILL be remembered for years to come!!!!!!” – Heny G
“The tunes are just snapshots of your feelings.” – Quest
“This is as deep & sexy as it gets. Blasta delivers one of the most beautiful dubstep albums ever made.” – L-Wiz
“This album is immense, breaking down boundaries in dubstep… pure vibes” – J:Kenzo
“Sophisticated dubstep music providing food for your soul! Pure jazzed out boogie! Blasta is sick!” – Distinction
“Blasta reconcilie le dubstep et la soul music. Un retour aux sources efficace!” – Von D
Blasta gives birth to a brand new sound, true future music. Music that is cooked from the most delicious rave, dub and jazz flavors ever created. This album gives you a complete feeling of tenderness and love, taken from the winter and fitting perfectly into the early spring.

IME012 Hades – Gatekeeper Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Immerse cuts a unique groove these days, releasing original, leftfield music, often dark and uplifting simultaneously. This new Gatekeeper plate falls on the darker side of the fence, but that’s no bad thing. ‘Hades’ is a moody skulker – triangles, pads and trickling sound FX giving way to a thumping bass’n’drum workout, dotted with delayed beeps and cutup shouted warnings. Flipside, the Keeper’s original Skull Disco collab ‘Tomb’ gets a rework, the insistent midrange line slotted into a rock-hard selection ofmilitant breaks, subterranean bass and dystopian mechanical noise. HEK004 Air & Lack Thereof – James Blake Hemlock Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Hemlock proudly introduce the debut release for James Blake; South London producer, keyboardist and live vocalist for Mount Kimbie (Hot Flush). Having grown up “Playing along to Stevie Wonder ‘til the early hours and falling asleep to Art Tatum and Erroll Garner” James’s music comes saturated with fresh ideas. He comes correct for Hemlock 004 with two brilliantly off-kilter, blues and funk inflected bombs. The perfect introduction to his distinct sound. All at once fast, slow, melodic and heavy, and with its feet rooted firmly in the dance, a. Air & Lack Thereof is a beautifully wrong and virulently catchy concoction of razor-sharp beats, bluesy vocal snippets, screaming p-funk synths and distortion-a-plenty that all adds up to so much more than the sum of it’s parts. b. Sparing the Horses goes for a darker, more twisted sonic palette. Layers of reversed horns, deep morphing subs and those distinct vocals again, playing over galloping polyrythmic beats for another unique interpretation of the dubstep sound. Worldwide support coming from Joe Nice & Dave Q Instra:mental, Distance, Pangaea, TRG, Ramadanman, Ben UFO, Rob da Bank.

IME013 Elephants – October Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Absolute madness from Immerse here, as October is released from his minimal techno day-centre to wreak havoc amongst the dubsteppers.‘Elephants’ is a pretty appropriate name for the A, as bongo loops and ominuous machine noises are summarily flattened by the phasing bass crunch and trumpeting midrange. Add a dash of running breakbeat to the mix and you have a strange yet effective dancefloor worrier. Flipside, ‘Medium’ opts for broken techno stylings, simmering pads and clattering percussion setting the scene for the tense main event. 8/10 [recommended] Review By Diccon c/o IDJMagazine
