STHoldings: End of year review 2011

Posted 21 December 2011 | By | Categories: news, reviews, tracks, video | No Comments

So that’s another year almost done and with it come the inevitable top this, top that lists. Here are details of how  STHoldings distributed labels/artists featured in the end of year lists from around the web.

RA Poll: Top 50 tracks of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1422

46. Maurice Donovan - Babeh [SSSSS]
The man formerly known as Ramadan cuts up a classic into something resembling house.

22. Peverelist - Dance Til the Police Come [Hessle Audio]
Jungle-inspired-swinging post-dubstep—or in other words, a Bristol-based genius at the top of his game.

19. Scuba - Adrenalin [Hotflush]
A lot of 2011′s big tracks inspired as much bickering as they did dancefloor mayhem, and Scuba’s only single under his usual moniker was no different. Following in his new, looser, and housier direction, “Adrenalin” is eight minutes of rigid repetition, incessantly catchy basslines and a strobing vocal sample. But the song’s lopsided progression is the important part, because three minutes in it melts away into one of the year’s most decadent breakdowns, several minutes of building synth washes and whooshes that unashamedly ascend to the highest of the gurning trance heavens. The song’s title might imply a certain energy, but we all know there’s a different chemical driving this one.

17. Pangaea - Hex [Hemlock]
Pangaea’s “Hex” was perfectly fine for the first 86 seconds. Pretty swell even. A bit of rhythmic trickery, a nice organic bed for it all to sit on. Then there was this: “Buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh kut buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh kut be booooooooooooy be boooooOOOOOOOoy.” It was at that moment that “Hex” became one of the most exciting songs we’d heard all year. That Kevin McAuley had further tricks up his sleeve later on is icing on the cake of course, but it’s also why we kept coming back to it throughout the year.

10. Unknown Artist - Sicko Cell [Swamp 81]
Be honest: When you finally heard “Sicko Cell” in full, you were a little bit underwhelmed. (If you even bothered to track it down at all.) There’s not much to say about the rhythm. There’s hardly a drop. Even the melody—if you can call the atmospheres a full-fledged melody—don’t inspire much poetry. There is a vocal, though. Perhaps you remember? It’s the one about cocaine powder. The one that drove you mad in a club this year trying to figure out where it was from. The one that Loefah, Oneman and others couldn’t stop playing. The one that landed this tune in our top 10 tracks of the year.

01. Blawan - Getting Me Down [White Label]
The whole story behind “Getting Me Down” is a bit corny really. I went out on New Years Eve—like everyone else does, and I did the whole thing, had a good time, left quite early and came back home and kind of just sat at my computer all night/morning. I had these disco loops I had been working on that I wasn’t really doing much with, and I started messing around with the a cappella and then something just clicked. I did it in about four hours and kind of forgot about it.
This one dropped off the radar for me a little bit, because I actually thought it was one of the weirder things I had written. I never really grasped the catchy vocal properly until I put it into context. A few guys said, “Yeah, I really like that tune,” but nothing more than anything else I sent before. The first person to get anything from me is usually Ben UFO. Ben gave it the first play on Rinse FM, and somebody then ripped it from the radio stream and uploaded it to YouTube—something that seems happen all the time now. That played an integral part of getting the tune in people’s heads really.
I’d been playing the tune out a lot, and it had got an OK reaction. I mean, I had always thought of it as filler for a set anyway. But once the YouTube clip was up, a lot of people in clubs knew what it was, even though it was only three or so weeks after I had finished making it. It’s really strange how things move so fast.

19. Instra:mental - Resolution 653 [NonPlus+]
The problem with Instra:mental? They release too much good music. “Problem” is the wrong word, but such has been the standard of Alex Green and Damon Kirkham’s output these past couple of years it’s become tough to ruminate on each new offering in isolation, fully appreciating the true extent of its merits. They’ve spoilt us, basically—and none more so than on their debut album, Resolution 653. Barely pausing for a fag break across its 13 tracks, the pair coaxed jaw-clenching amounts of warmth and grit out of their machines, coming off like the natural heirs to Drexciya’s electro throne.

RA Poll: Top 20 compilations of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1424

20. Various Artists - Mosaic Vol. 1 [Exit]
A lot of the tunes on Mosaic were earmarked as singles for Exit. But it became really clear that I wasn’t going to have the schedule to get everything out, so a compilation seemed like a good idea. In the same way as the [Autonomic] podcast, putting this music together served as a platform for people to get their heads around it. If the tracks are all in dribs and drabs it sort of goes unnoticed. I think compilations and the podcast kind of helped identify this group of artists producing this music. I suppose that’s where the title Autonomic came from. It’s funny that it became a genre name sort of, because that was never the intent.

14. Various Artists - Back & 4th [Hotflush]
I wasn’t directly involved in the process of choosing tracks for Back & 4th, but the goal was to present a gradual evolution of the label’s sound over the last few years. It was also an opportunity to bring in a few newcomers who provided a clear manifestation of that same evolution, with Roska, Boddika, dBridge, and FaltyDL adding their own flavors to the mix. I was also glad that Scuba picked up my own track, “Axis.” It’s the first one I made that I was really satisfied with. My favorite track on the compilation, though, was Boxcutter’s “LOADtime.” He’s always been really inspiring to me, as a veteran producer whose talent and skill really set him apart. – Incyde, Label Manager

10. Various Artists - 116 & Rising  [Hessle Audio]
We had the idea for the compilation at the end of 2010 and started putting the wheels in motion soon after that. We approached some people we hadn’t worked with before as well as asking those we had if they were interested in the concept too. Luckily for us, everybody was. In terms of the name, the three of us were on the train coming back from our distributors after talking about the project, thinking of titles. I’d been re-listening to Experience by the Prodigy a week or two earlier and one of the tracks on there is called “Everybody in the Place (155 & Rising).” So 116 & Rising (referring to the BPM of the slowest track in the comp) is a bit of a joke, but at the same time summarises the project and a lot of what we’re about nicely.

RA Poll: Top 20 labels of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1421

20. NonPlus+
Nonplus+ heads Alex Green and Damon Kirkham simply claim to release what they like—no matter the genre. That’s what everyone says…until the distributor steps in. Luckily for us, Green and Kirkham didn’t get the memo, and spent the year reaffirming their pan-genre approach by putting Actress’ blurry electronica next to Lowtec’s tired house, and Boddika’s breezin’ electro up against the Neil Landstrumm and JD Twitch collab Salsa Apocalypso. Add Instra:mental’s own brutal and beautiful Resolution 653 to the mix, and you have yourself a wonderful and confusing year

19. Idle Hands
Saunter down Stokes Croft in Bristol with some cash in your pocket and you’ll likely end up trawling the racks of Idle Hands. The label of the same name was started up in 2009 while Chris Farrell was still employed a bit further up the street by the erstwhile Rooted Records. Much like the stock in both these stores, the label hasn’t been wedded to any one genre. In 2011 that’s meant an impeccable string of singles from artists like AnD, Kowton, Kevin McPhee, Szare and Outboxx which have run the gamut between charcoal techno and jazzy house.

05. Hotflush
With a hefty label compilation occupying the first quarter of the year and a busy 2010 behind him, it could have been a year of consolidation for Scuba’s Hotflush. Instead, the imprint pushed forward with new talents George FitzGerald, Braille) and old Paul Woolford & Psycatron). Looking over the names that released on Hotflush in retrospect, and things seem obvious. (Err… of course Sepalcure and Sigha go together!) But it speaks to the platform that Scuba has created that artists from house, techno and bass music even think to send him tracks—and that he finds a way to work all of them into his DJ sets.

94. Sepalcure “Pencil Pimp” [Hotflush]
As Sepalcure, Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma slid in right before the whistle to remind us that electronic music devices can do more than evocatively sputter and fritz. “Pencil Pimp” whirls on a machine-lathed spindle of Chicago footwork, capturing a feeling of curtailed tension and lurking danger with its soulful vocal clips and warm synth pads. There are no gestures of rebellion or subversion, only an argument for well-made music at a time when it might seem besieged. “Pencil Pimp” demonstrates why we feel so comfortable breaking the mold: We know someone will come along who feels passionate enough to cast it again, tempered even stronger. –Brian Howe

Sepalcure – Pencil Pimp / I’m Alright (album single) by Hotflush

86. Blawan “Getting Me Down” [self-released]
Blawan first drew attention with tracks that wielded wild drums like a toddler banging on household objects, but his most powerful moment this year came when he reined in those tendencies for a straightforward house thumper.  A lot of the impact in “Getting Me Down” comes fromthat Brandy vocal, squeezed and wedged into a galloping beat that recontextualizes the R&B slow-jam original as a sugary, hyped-up rush that’s dangerously contagious. Released discreetly after months of dubplate domination, the track’s landing was titanic: it was impossible to walk around record stores in London in May without hearing it blaring from speakers, or go to a club night without it being rinsed at least once. For the first half of the year, “Getting Me Down” was an event, and listening back to it at year’s end, it’s easy to see why. So few tracks combined candyfloss rave, UK garage hysteria, and dubby dread (check the growling basslines) into something that sounded so universal yet so subversive, helping to kick off a new impulse in the bass music world that was all about house. –Andrew Ryce

47. Sepalcure ‘Sepalcure’ [Hotflush]
In an interview with The Guardian last month, Hotflush boss Scuba named “Outside”, the closing song from bass music duo Sepalcure’s self-titled debut LP, as the song he would want to open his next DJ set with. It’s a strange choice for a set opener– “Outside” is beatless, essentially four minutes of drone and clipped voices– but then again, not much about Sepalcure makes sense in the constant forward-thinking climate of bass music circa 2011. As an album, it doesn’t really do anything new, and a few of the signifiers that Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma plunder onSepalcure were, to some, reaching their expiration dates– specifically, the use of pitched vocals that Stewart liberally splayed on his album this year as Machinedrum, Room(s). Part of what makes Sepalcure such a deeply enjoyable listen is how familiar it all is, pogoing between juke-derived textures, IDM’s click-clack machinery, misty pastoral ambience, and house music’s 4/4 insistence while weaving a web of shivering romance that still manages to move bodies. Above all else, Sepalcure offers a necessary reminder that, yeah, change is good, but elegant, refined perfection also has its place. –Larry Fitzmaurice

47: PAUL WOOLFORD & PSYCATRON ‘STOLEN’ (HOTFLUSH)
Almost five years on from ‘Erotic Discourse’, someone, somewhere did 2011 a massive favour and relit the fire under Paul Woolford’s arse, prompting the Leeds veteran to roll back the years and deliver some of his all-time best material. ‘Razor Blade’ and his remix of T. Williams and Terri Walker’s ‘Heartbeat’ were sublime, but this colossal collaboration with Psycatron on Hotflush simply took the biscuit.

40: OLD APPARATUS SIDE A PART 1 (DEEP MEDI)
Old Apparatus’s mysterious debut – 20 minutes of music spread across two untitled sides of vinyl – is something we recommend enjoying as a whole, but there’s no doubt that the first distinct movement of the A-side packs the fiercest punch. It sounds like UK garage gone industrial, its perfectly swung rhythm riven by distortion and an overloaded darkside bassline. The end, it suggests, is very much nigh.

39: TEETH ‘SHAWTY’ (502 RECORDINGS)
Smoked-out drum machine pop from Helsinki’s TEETH that suited 502′s darkroom aesthetic (see also: Jay Weed, Fis-T) to a tee.

24: KAHN ‘LIKE WE USED TO’ (PUNCH DRUNK)
Kahn’s beautifully crafted debut single bowled us over, with its vocals chopped into the syllables of pure energy and longing – “feminine pressure” writ large – and strapped to the most lithe and undeniable dubstep rhythm we heard all year.

Kahn ‘Like We Used To’ (Punch Drunk Records) by Punch Drunk Records

20: BLAWAN ‘GETTING ME DOWN’ (WHITE LABEL)
This year, Blawan expanded on the promise of his 2010 debut single ‘Fram’ to become one of the UK’s most in-demand, and refreshingly, heaviest producers, proving that you can still go hard in the paint without resorting to dubstep or electro-house cliches. He showed off his lighter touch, however, on this vinyl only edit of Brandy’s ‘Wanna Be Down’; it’s still his finest track to date.

17: PANGAEA ‘WON’T HURT’ (HESSLE AUDIO)
Pretty much everything Pangaea touches turns to gold, but nothing gleamed so bright in 2011 as ‘Won’t Hurt’ – a rude-as-all-fuck but masterfully honed onslaught of scything synths, choppy drums and outrageous sub-bass.

Won’t Hurt by pangaea

13: UNKNOWN ARTIST ‘SICKO CELL’ (SWAMP81)
I’m the information… co-caine powder. Say no more.

07: ROCKWELL ‘ARIA’ (CRITICAL AUDIO)
The most atmospheric, emotive and dynamic drum’n’bass track of the year, and an instant classic – wrought out of fierce, fanatically detailed drum programming, ghost-traces of This Mortal Coil’s ‘Song To The Siren’ and impeccably timed, gut-skewering bass stabs.

42: 2562 FEVER (WHEN IN DOUBT)
Fever is a concept album with a very simple but rigorous set of rules – every nuance and texture is half-inched from disco records produced from the mid 70’s to the early 80’s, with producer Dave Huismans’ own birth year of 1979 acting as a temporal pivot. The results don’t sound like disco at all – beyond a certain joyous, celebratory quality – but rather a new kind of dance music; dynamic, shapeshifting and irrepressible.

5. Hotflush
If you’re wondering why we think Hotflush is one of the best labels of the year, then you are not reading XLR8R enough. Let’s start with the obvious reasons: Sepalcure’s debut full-length topped Hotflush’s year off with a stunning display of dense post-dubstep, George FitzGerald dropped two more solid singles of R&B-infused garage, and label head Paul Rose (a.k.a. Scuba) unleashed one of 2011′s biggest tunes, “Adrenalin.” Meanwhile, Praveen Sharma of Sepalcure dropped four tracks of luscious, rolling garage with his A Meaning EP as Braille and Lando Kal stepped outside his usual role as the taller half of Lazer Sword long enough to deliver two of his most impressive solo cuts to date, “Further” and “Time Out.” Big, soulful tunes, consistently top-notch output, and a proven ability to not only shift within the ever-moving bass-music scene, but, more importantly, the power to influence it, made Hotflush a force yet again in 2011. Glenn Jackson

4. SWAMP81
Second acts can be hard to come by in electronic music, particularly in the lightning-quick environs of London’s hardcore continuum, but DMZ co-founder Loefah doesn’t seem to be having much of a problem with it. Since founding the SWAMP81 imprint in 2009, he’s quickly assembled a roster that functions as a sort of all-star team for upfront, low-end-heavy sounds. After serving up massive tunes like Addison Groove’s “Footcrab” and Ramadanman’s “Work Them” in 2010, the vinyl-only label stepped it up even further in 2011, dropping releases from FaltyDL, Zed Bias (both solo and as one-half of the Funkbias collaboration with Funk Butcher), and another single from Addison Groove. SWAMP81 was also home to records from Boddika—establishing him as a solo artist and one of the year’s biggest producers. Perhaps most notably, the label (eventually) released “Sicko Cell,” one of 2011′s most anticipated tunes. (The song may not have quite lived up to the hype, but it did snag the #13 slot on our countdown of the year’s best tracks.) Even as folks begin to wonder about the state of so-called bass music and attempt to figure out exactly where it’s heading, there appears to be no shortage of quality music coming from the SWAMP81 camp. Shawn Reynaldo

47. Boddika
 “2727″
 (SWAMP81)
Even in a year when Instra:mental, the duo he’s been a part of for more than a decade, released a widely acclaimed and sonically adventurous new album, the ascent of Boddika as a solo artist could not be stopped. Tracks like “2727″—with its thunderous drums, acid lines, and unapologetically raw aesthetic—are the reason why. Shawn Reynaldo

2727 by Boddika

46. French Fries
”Champagne”
(ClekClekBoom)
Legend has it that Claude VonStroke wanted to sign “Champagne” to his Dirtybird label, but young French producer French Fries politely declined and kept the tune for his own ClekClekBoom imprint. True or not, it’s quite the story, not that this tune, which uses white space as effectively as it employs snappy drums and eerie synths, needed much help finding its way into DJs’ playlists. Shawn Reynaldo

French Fries – Champagne / Hugz ft. Bambounou [CCB001] – Out Now! (12″ Ltd Ed Vinyl) by ClekClekBoom

44. Sepalcure
”Pencil Pimp”
(Hotflush)
Sepalcure seems to compose bass music on the most loose, yet subtle terms, and the pair’s unique perspective on the genre has continued to yield stellar results. Somehow both tribal and smooth in the same breath, “Pencil Pimp” immediately stood out during the course of the duo’s debut LP, mostly due to the sheer weight infused into its post-happy sound—think Mount Kimbie with slightly bigger balls (and maybe some more drugs in the mix). Glenn Jackson

43. Blawan
”Getting Me Down”
Sampling generously from Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down” is kind of a no-brainer (whether or not you’re willing to admit it, we all loved that song), but Blawan did much more than simply edit Brandy’s half-forgotten hit—he propelled it into the club of some distant planet with monstrous percussion and whatever the hell that reverse low-end sound is. Wherever it comes from, it’s strange, unnerving, and just about perfect. Glenn Jackson

26. Instra:Mental
 “When I Dip”
 (NonPlus)
2011 found veteran UK duo Instra:mental completing a very large left turn, essentially abandoning drum & bass for old-school electro, heavy low-end, and lots of 808 drum sounds. Ahead of the acclaimed Resolution 653, the pair dropped “When I Dip,” an undeniable tune that also folds some Southern-style booty bass into the outfit’s new sonic formula. It proved to be quite the effective opening salvo, both for Instra:mental’s re-emergence and Boddika’s big year as a solo artist. Shawn Reynaldo

Instra:mental Resolution 653 LP Sampler ‘Thomp’ / ‘When I Dip’ [NONPLUS013] by stholdings

24. Julio Bashmore
 “Ribble to Amazon”
(3024)
There’s a line somewhere between soulful, UK-style house and anthemic, almost cheesy, bangers that can be dangerous. However, when walked just right, that line is perfect for the dancefloor. Julio Bashmore knows exactly how to walk it, and “Ribble to Amazon” is one of his finest journeys on that limb—the pads are warm, the vocals are just right, and those breakdowns are too good to be true. Glenn Jackson

JULIO BASHMORE RIBBLE TO AMAZON (3024-011B) by 3024world

18. Teeth
”Shawty”
 (502)
Like many selections on Oneman’s 502 imprint, there’s not a whole lot to “Shawty.” Listening to the song, it quickly becomes apparent just how much space there is in the production, a factor that’s just as important as any of the actual sonic elements being put to use. That said, each of those elements is just about perfect. Utilizing low-slung drum beats, haunting synth melodies, and a sultry vocal sample, Finnish producer Teeth not only put himself on the bass-music map, he also created one of the year’s most memorable tunes. Shawn Reynaldo

13. Unknown
”Sicko Cell”
 (SWAMP81)
It’s amazing that when “Sicko Cell”—undoubtedly the most hyped tune of the year—was finally released in late July, the world was essentially already over it. In a world where anticipation grows exponentially online and DJs are mastering YouTube rips in order to play the latest tune, especially one created “anonymously” (it’s an open secret that Joy Orbison produced the track) and only passed along to a select few, “Sicko Cell” simply ran out of steam. Nevertheless, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a monster of a club track. With a stripped-down aesthetic and eerie vibe, the song is rather similar to Teeth’s “Shawty,” but the twisted, Burial-esque vocal samples put “Sicko Cell” over the top. Shawn Reynaldo

3. Scuba
 “Adrenalin”
 (Hotflush)
Scuba made a trance song. (Polite company might refer to it as progressive house, but we’re going to call a spade a spade.) On the heels of “Loss,” which he released earlier in the earlier under his SCB moniker (and already nabbed #41 on this list), it was apparent that Paul Rose was interested in exploring new sound palettes, but something this, well, epic was not really expected. While the notion of one of the most influential and boundary-pushing dubstep producers of the past decade making a tune that Sasha would play (yes, that happened) sounds like some kind of nightmare on the surface, it doesn’t change the fact that “Adrenalin” is not only an excellent track, but also a production that completely resets exactly what it is that Scuba is all about. Containing one grandiose and ethereal breakdown—not to mention a series of smaller ups and downs along the way—”Adrenalin” certainly plays to the dancefloor, particularly dancers looking to lose their shit once the beat comes back in and the song’s chunky bassline takes hold. The synths are washy and warm, the sounds employed are impeccably clean, and yes, the track is absolutely, undeniably a bit cheesy. It’s also eight of the most enjoyable minutes of music we heard all year (more or less on repeat, to be honest), and we can’t wait to hear what Scuba comes up with next. Shawn Reynaldo

78: Fis-T
 ”Night Hunter”
502 Recordings (502001)
Fis-T arrived from nowhere this year to prove that dubstep wobble, when deployed skillfully, is still one of the most powerful dancefloor tools around. This track hits like a torpedo.

72: Jamie Woon
 ”Night Air” Candent (CDNT001)
Mountaintop ballad by someone destined for big things when his album drops next year. Preferable in its rain-splattered early form; once the backing choir turn up it gets a bit dry ice and Phil Collins, but everyone’s partial to a bit of ‘Sussudio’ every now and then.

64: Pearson Sound
 ”Blanked”
Hessle Audio (HES016)
Survey some people with their finger on the pulse about who makes the best dancefloor tunes right now, and we’d wager David Kennedy will appear more than once. ‘Blanked’, released less than a month ago, seemed to mark the accumulation of his work as Ramadanman and Pearson Sound this year – so that’s ‘Work Them’, ‘Glut’, ‘Tempest’, ‘Grab Somebody’, ‘Fall Short’, ‘Don’t Change for Me’ and more – expanding on those meticulous intros and outros, sharp booty-leaning drums and gut-wrenching breakdowns that seem to drown in sub-bass.

55: Breach
 ”Fatherless” PTN (PTN004)
Who’d have thought that Ben Westbeech, a man with a reputation for considered, perhaps overly musical house music would pull out one of the most ominous dancefloor stompers of the summer? This single also featured two of 2010′s most overlooked tracks in B-side ‘Man Up’ and the runaway train that was Doc Daneeka’s remix.

47: Pangaea
‘Sunset Yellow’ Hessle Audio (HES010)
Nauseous, infected music from one of the artists behind the Hessle Audio label, with divas from forgotten raves crammed together into a demonic torch song.

31: Peverelist
”Better Ways Of Living” Punch Drunk (DRUNK017)
Peverelist’s ever more skilfully honed but reliably rugged output ought to embarrass some of his lazier and less inspired contemporaries. As far as stripped, jungle and techno-inflected dubstep goes, no can hold a candle to this guy; kids picking up ‘Better Ways’ second-hand in 30 years time will be as blown away by it then as we are now.

26: Guido
 ”Mad Sax” Punch Drunk (DRUNK016 / DRUNKCD003 / DRUNKCD004)
Guido may often be associated associated with that “purple” synth sound, but the truth is he’s got the whole colour spectrum in his employ. As you might expect, there’s plenty of sax in ‘Mad Sax’, pouring like lava though an enchanted forest of larger-than-life crashing timpani, post-coital vocal moans and echo-drenched keyboard chords. As ever with the young Bristol producer, the influence of video game soundtracks on his work is marked, but believe us when we say that there isn’t a video game in existence mad enough to be soundtracked by ‘Mad Sax’. Though we dare say someone in Japan is working on it as we speak.

22: Pariah
”Prism”R&S (RS1005)
Pariah gets compared to Burial, but with ‘Prism’ he showed that although his tracks may be – like Burial’s – nostalgic and heartbroken, his true strength lies in the way he combines that rain-splattered aesthetic with some of the punchiest, most devastating drum loops and acid basslines around.

One of this year’s most evil and effective club tracks, and for us the first truly vital production to have come out of Pinch’s studio in years. Its rolling subs and crisp claps bring to mind the kind of minimal, rave-friendly grime you simply never hear anymore, whiles its loose congas gesture at UK funky even as they play covert homage to the peerless 2004-6 style of Swamp81 boss Loefah. Absolute murder.

16: Addison Groove
 ”Footcrab” Swamp81 (SWAMP005)
Bristol’s Headhunter has been one of dubstep’s most historically consistent artists, with regular releases on Tempa and more. But it wasn’t until 2010, making acid and juke-influenced dancefloor tracks between dubstep tempo and house tempo, that he had his first hit. ‘Footcrab”s incredibly simple – a steady kick, ice cold chords and a cut-up vocal on a constant loop, with an almost mournful breakdown that could be from a different song entirely – and it proved irresistible to DJs as widespread as Ricardo Villalobos and James Zabiela.

06: James Blake
‘CMYK’
R&S (RS1003)
James Blake has become renowned for having His Own Unique Sound, but what’s really impressive is the diversity with which he’s applied that. On the Bells Sketch EP the London producer made ballroom music for purgatory; on the later Klavierwerke, swingless minimalism that soundtracked sheer fear. In between them came ‘CMYK’, Blake’s most anthemic single to date, full of unashamed Aaliyah and Kelis samples and synths that explode like paint cans thrown against walls. We like anthemic. Anthemic’s good.

02: Ramadanman
‘Glut’
Hemlock (HEK008)
No one artist made more great tracks than Ramadanman in 2010. Already one of the UK’s prime producers, every single that David Kennedy, who’s in the process of phasing out the Ramadanman name in favour of Pearson Sound, released this year either showed another string to his bow, or expanded and honed what was there already.

We had warped experiments with space and percussion (‘Bleeper’, ‘Tumble’), junglist epics (‘Don’t Change for Me’) and some seriously gorgeous house records (‘Your Words Matter’ and his remix of ‘Night Air’), but the main narrative for Kennedy’s discography in 2010 started when he switched to 808-driven drum sounds – something that people thought Addison Groove would make his own in the UK this year. We know, everyone remembered that 808s were great again in 2010, but no one used them quite like Rama did, particularly on this track, for our money an unfairly underrated cousin of ‘Work Them’ and ‘Blanked’.

What still amazes us about ‘Glut’, as well as its B-side ‘Tempest’ and the rest of David Kennedy’s material from 2010, is as you listen to it, you’re incredibly aware of every move it makes, and why it’s making them – there’s almost no surprises, because it all makes such perfect sense and it’s all so perfectly timed. Like all he’s doing is filling in the obvious gaps with the obvious colours. And yet, when moments like that flash of synths in ‘Glut’s breakdown happen, there’s no possible reaction to give past sheer awe.

SIRENUK001PT2 – Siren – Broken Silence Part 2 – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Part 2 of the Vinyl Eps’ featuring tracks taken from their debut album, “Broken Silence”, on their own Siren Records has been doing damage on the DJ circuit for some time now. Tracks such as ‘Gumball Rally’ and ‘Broken Silence’ have been staples in the sets of everyone from Andy C to DJ Marky to Fabio and Chase and Status, as well as the new breed of artist producers such as S.P.Y, Spor and Jubei. Over the last 10 years Universal Project are responsible for hits such as ‘Vessel’ on the Virus imprint, ‘Haunted Dreams’ on their own label Universal Project and an EP on DJ Hype’s True Playaz, as well as ‘Streetilfe’ with DJ Friction for Advanced Recordings and many Renegade Hardware smashers such as ‘Danger Chamber’, ‘Comin’ Thru’ and the Black Techno EP. The Universal Project sound is B-Boy breaks with techno elements and dubwise bass, and everything in between. Vicious Circle broke through in 2005 with their monster remix of Universal Project’s ‘Jackhammer’ and have been destroying dancefloors ever since with their unique sound. Releases such as ‘Between the Lines’ and the ‘Welcome to Shanktown’ EP on Renegade Hardware pushed them to the forefront of the tech dnb scene. Subsequent releases on Digital Soundboy, Critical and Quarantine displayed a diverse style that has helped establish them as heavy hitters across the board whilst collaborations with high profile artists such as Chase & Status, Dom & Roland, Fierce and most recently Jubei clearly demonstrate the respect they command from their peers. After spending a lot of time in the studio together Vice and Ruxspin decided to create a new guise for their own brand of rolling future funk. Siren is the result. Both artists in their own right have toured the world from the farthest reaches of Europe to the United States and Asia, consistently destroying dancefloors and gaining a reputation as masters of their craft. The aim of this duo is to cover all styles within the scene and not be constrained by subgenres, whilst still maintaining a dancefloor ethos which is true to their UK roots.

G-ILLA006 – Dean Rodell & Katharsys – Interceptor / Time Hole – 12″ Vinyl
Straight from New York City comes Guerilla Recordings. With the release of Black Ops perfectly timed, this could be considered as the unofficial Guerilla style soundtrack! Dean Rodell of Machine Code and Subsistenz fame teams up with man of the moment Katharsys. Katharsys made a statement with his recently released ‘Zero Point / Cold Spot’ on Habit Recordings. The ‘Interceptor’ starts off with a the hugely filtered breaks and beats Dean is known for. Soon the Katharsys trademarks are getting noticed and yes this is wicked team work here. Bassline rolls and the beats rattle on an on, like you are on the battlefield dodging all the hostile gunfire. The ‘Timehole’ on the flip is Katharsys entering the playground solo. Freaked out intro building the tension. The beats start rolling in and you feel the bassline sneaking up you.. Mayhem!

AMALGAM005 – Kitech / Throttler – I am God / Bloody Victory – 12″ Vinyl
The 5th release on Amalgam Recordings brings together 2 artists who have previously released on Amalgam. Kitech from Essex is without a doubt one of the hottest artists in the D&B scene. With a few releases under his belt Kitech is going from strength to strength. He’s now working with Dylan (Freak Recordings) one of the biggest names in the scene. He’s also now part of Anger Management roster and is playing gigs far and wide. Throttler seems to have the cunning knack of being a prolific artist who maintains an extremely high level of production and programming on all his tracks. The level of detail in the programming & the high level of production makes his tracks stand head and shoulders above the rest. Bloody Victory is a immense spine chilling dance floor destroyer. DRUNK019 – Peverelist & Hyetal – The Hum / rrrr – 12″ Vinyl
Punch Drunk continue to twist, redefine and push forward the template of dubstep with a new 12” combining the talents of rising star Hyetal and Bristol veteran Peverelist. As part of the second wave of Bristol dubstep producers, Hyetal has already made his mark, garnering critical acclaim for his recent 12” ‘Phoenix’ on Orca and previously releasing 12”s on labels such as Reduction and Soul Motive in addition to his collaboration with Shortstuff on Punch Drunk earlier this year. This is Peverelist’s second 12” release this year following his ‘Better Ways of Living’ release for Punch Drunk and his recent mix for Resident Advisor. Both producers bring their trademark ingredients to the table, Hyetal’s kaleidoscopic synthesis and Pev’s deadly junglistic rhythm section combine to produce two very different tracks. The Hum is immediately grabbing, brimming with propelling energy and uplifting melodics. The cryptically titled ‘rrrr’ is a much darker disorientating psychedelic affair, slowly luring you into it’s groove, providing another typical Punch Drunk curve ball.

3024010 – Martyn – Left Hander / Shook Up – 12″ Vinyl
After a year dominated with collaborations (the Great Lengths remix double pack), fresh blood and inveterate genre renegades (Illum Sphere’s Titan EP & Altered Natives ‘The Bitch/Crop Duster’ respectively) We at 3024 came to the conclusion a new Martyn release was perhaps overdue. Not so much an album preview as a standalone document of a year spent expanding dance floor horizons over (a great many) seas. 3024’s milestone 10th release arrives in November with 2 brand new Martyn tracks as ‘Lefthander’ clatters in on heavily filtered drums, flickering high hats & garbled radio transmissions before a carousel synth melody breaks through the percussive murk accompanied by a roaming bass line that prioritises restraint over bludgeon. Dubbed out ambience rapidly takes root in the gaps between concrete snares & dissonant brass stabs as bass and synths elevate themselves for one last round of call & response sparring before dissolving back into barely audible dialogue. Steam age industrial monolith ‘Shook Up’ swaps slink for haunted metronomic brutality, snapping quickly into focus first with relentless kicks before bass akin to an Atari2600 playing Berghain looms over the clouded horizon. Offsetting the claustrophobia is the first hints of melody as an impossibly slight piano phrase creeps in, countering rhythmical pummelling with ghost in the machine delicacy. Classically spastic 808 tendrils are underpinned by soaring synth strings as proceedings draw to a juddering close. Capturing 3024’s musical progress with typical accuracy Erosie’s latest sleeve design is perhaps his best yet, echoing the back to basics theme with beautifully austere monochrome geometry curdling into something altogether more volatile at the edges.

DISF011 – Instra:mental / Von D – Voyeur / Like A Bird – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Skream’s label rounds of 2010 with a classic release. Its not often a gem like this comes along and its no surprise that fellow production collaborator Skream picked it up for his Disfigured Dubz imprint. Having been a regular floor filler over the past year within the emerging techno x dubstep scene, ‘Voyeur’ has been in high demand and finally sees the light of day to many peoples delight. It was one of Instra:mentals first dabbles with the 4/4 structure but has the maturity and qualities of a rediscovered 90s classic. Lazy robo beats set the tone for a slurred vocal that sounds like a drunken tourist in a red light district. At the same time, spacey atmospheres build in the background until they reach a peak and fade away into screaming stabs that get the crowd going mental. Expect to hear this for many years to come and could possibly reach classic status. Next up we have the AA side from upcoming artists Von D and Riscotheque. With their jazz/soul fueled take on Dubstep they’re building their own little niche within the scene and are sure to shine this year. ‘Like a bird’ mixes old skool vocal snippets, lurching fizzy mids and Detroit style stabs to create this monster that Skream and his fellow Djs have been rinsing to full effect over the last couple of months. A perfect balance of musical prowess and heavyweight beats and bass, this tune covers all angles nicely.¬¬

TEAL001 – West Norwood Cassette Library – Blonde On Blonde / Blonde On Blonde (Pearson Sound Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Following the critically acclaimed debut-release of BOB BHAMRAs WEST NORWOOD CASSETTE LIBRARY alias TEAL Recordings presents BLONDE ON BLONDE as its seminal release. This one is surely ment for the dancefloor: an addictive bassline, and a stomping house beat executed as were it a hidden gem dug out in a New York pawnshop. The ubiquitous RAMADANMAN hits the flipside under his PEARSON SOUND monkier, with a rehash of BLONDE ON BLONDE; with subtle references to the original version DAVID KENNEDY takes the remix to quite different, but equally interesting, places. Lush early morning vibes! – A must have! Support from, UNTOLD, 2562, BEN UFO, SHORTSTUFF, MOSCA, PARIAH.

SPEAKS003 – Sekta – Liquid Tek EP – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. No doubt looking for somewhere with a bit of political stability and a brighter economic future, 24 year old Polish producer Jan Dudzik aka Sekta recently joined many of his compatriots by leaving London and farking off back to his native Warsaw. Luckily, he left us a bottle of the finest vodka to remember him by, and a four track EP of stepping rhythms, fat bass and dubby atmospherics to help wash it down. Lead track ‘Liquid Tek’combines deep pads, pulsing subs, metallic riffs and broken beats into a floor friendly, but contemplative post dubstepper. Similar elements are combined in “ I Need’ , with a sliver of vocal adding an extra layer to the musical equation. ‘Hakka Riddim’ takes things a bit heavier, coiling beefy synth stabs around it’s insistent rhythms , and employing a spacey string interlude to break things up along the way. Closing track ‘Deep in the Woods’ takes the trace of D n B textures that run through the EP and lets loose, with full on, chopped up Amen breaks accompanying futuristic pads, robo-synths and occasional flourishes of cinematic strings that hint of Easter European nostalgia.

SLUDGE011 – Ed Solo & Deekline – Blow Out – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Hold tight the whistle crew, because Ed Solo & Deekline have dropped a meaty mighty ravey sizzler of a track. Blow Out is a sumptuous club banger that riffs off a ravey vocal, junglistic drums and epic pads and strings. The label’s 11th release skips smoothly between full and half time beats and also makes sure to deliver a healthy portion of the kind of bass mayhem you’ve come to expect from Sludge. On the flip, Deekline and Product.01 head out into peaktime ghetto house territory, ripping up a wobbly throwdown of epic proportions to send those hands into the air. Whatever your flavour, this one’s all about the heavy dancefloor ill behaviour. Get on it!

ZAUDIO022 – Genetix – Hangin – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. This young talented duo is showing us how the heavier side of Dubstep should be done! You can really hear from their productions that they know their way around the studio and when you play some of Genetix tunes on a big system, make sure you put up some health hazard signs! Death by subs is a high possibility. Okay, on to the tunes! “Hangin’” is just one of those tunes to watch out for. It will blow your chest up with bass, make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck and possibly wet yourself with excitement. That’s only if you’re lucky though. Then we have “Trigger Happy” featuring Persist whose name I seem to be coming across quite a bit at the moment. This tune is great and can’t really choose between this and “Hangin’”. Both are insane! Then last but not least is “Sci Tech” which is on the deeper side. Great tune and a nice way to round off this great EP!

This 3 track EP is just a sprinkle of what they have lined up “Squid attack” is like nothing you’ve ever heard before and sounds like an underwater bass barrage big enough to sink the titanic! It’s an absolute monster that will eat you for breakfast, lunch, a light snack and then dinner! The production really shines through on their records and you can hear that they have been producing for quite some time. Then we have “All that remains” and “Keep it gutter” that are just as dirty and disgusting as “Squid attack” Watch ya bass bins im telling ya

SMOKE014 – Synkro – Angels VIP / Good Loving – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Synkro is no doubt one of the most talented producers out on the Dubstep circuit at the moment and this single here shows us what Synkro is all about. His profile has been blowing up no end recently and has had a release on Med School (Hospital) and has a track signed on D-Bridge’s imprint Exit, due for release late on the year. First up is a VIP mix of “Angels” that was originally released on a white label late 2009. The original was a favorite with the likes of Headhunter and Intra:mental that were both giving the tune regular rotation. The VIP mix here is a more zooped up, 2 step dance floor roller that sounds clean and smooth on the ear. Very impressive stuff! Then “Good Lovin” on the flip which has been a Synkro favorite of mine for a long time. It’s the side of Synkro that is says “sit back, relax and enjoy”. if you like it nice and mellow, “Good Lovin” is the one for you!

BSR001 – The Eerier Child – Rabid Dogs EP (12” & CD & Poster ) – 12″ Vinyl
The 13 track CD comes in a limited edition package including: a full colour movie poster, a special CD display and the new 12” record. The Eerier Child, a Rotterdam-based producer, now releases 3 new tracks on his newly co-founded label Black Sunday Recordings after previously releasing several successful tracks on labels Mindtrick Records and Redrum Recordz. In a still ongoing journey through various music styles, The Eerier Child found shelter in the bold realms of dubstep. In these very realms, he discovered a world where he could release his full power of fierce rhythms and colourful sounds capes drenched in an eerie atmosphere. Rabid Dogs drags you along, with daggering drums that lure you into uncontrolled excitement at times, and unsettling, yet highly addictive synth lines that make you feel chased by the somewhat darker sides of your own mind at others. This is not for the faint-hearted… The second track Dead and Buried starts off with a dubsound that develops into an energetic mix of driving rhythms and soothing, nostalgic female vocals. Smooth wobbles dance their way into the hearts of listeners. At first glance this seems to be a happy song.. but something’s not quite right… are there monsters lurking in the dark? Pieces takes you aboard an electro spaceship on a little trip to cloud-cuckoo-land. Swaying beats and distinctive horror sounds will sweep you on a dance floor of vast spaces capes, switching from four on the floor to a half time feel. and back.. Yes, this is all so unreal! CD: The album has its own distinguished sound and style that could loosely be described as “a soundtrack for a movie that doesn’t exist”. It uses Hip-hop and Dubstep related influences, but The Eerier Child just uses these minor elements to create more tension and flow to his tracks. To really experience the eerie and horroresque vibe caught on this album we dare you to “put on your headphones and get in a 40 minute trip”.

RED005 – ASC – Advent / The Glow – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Long time producer and innovator ASC steps to Pushing Red with two fantastic pieces of Detroit-tinged techno. He’s well known in many circles for his wonderful drum & bass releases which more recently have brought him success on such labels Exit, Nonplus & his own Auxilary. His is also known for other tempos and this release is pure evidence that he is just as deadly in this realm as his drum & bass! A. ADVENT: A punishing 4/4 kicks things off before distorted, crushing bass and effects propel this monster into Detroit territory! While this tune is a monster, everything is perfectly layered and everything within the tune makes sense. Reverbed keys and delayed effects pull everything together! Definitely one for the fans who like their beats with a little teeth! AA. THE GLOW: The Glow harks back to the glory days of Warp Records and mid 90′s techno & electronic. A subtle 4/4 keeps the momentum going while the bassline could workout any soundsystem. Lush keys and pads sit perfectly on top creating that wonderful melodic and nostalgia feel! Definitely one for fans of deeper, melodic techno!

With a very individual outlook to the tempo Morphy, alongside The Nasha Experience has created a single that brings a new angle to the Voodoo sound. Shackles: An immense piece of work from the Scottish dub master, The tracks intro contains the most haunting old slave vox used to maximum effect. Instantly recognisable ‘Shackles’ has been a show piece track in every deejays set who was fortunate enough to have it. The drop hits like a tonne of bricks straight to your jaw. Drums and bass create dancefloor weight that cannot be denied. Big, Brooding & and full of tense energy- This track is a future classic. Indus Valley with The Nasha Experience: Morphy collaborated wit long time friends The Nasha Experience- London’s cross cultural bass fiends on Indus Valley, and both parties influence is heard instantly. RECIPE012 Skeptical / Pessimist – Cold One (Jubei Remix) / Zulu 12″ Vinyl
Skeptical’s ‘Cold One’ rubber-stamped his arrival on the drum & bass scene. With releases signed to Exit, Dispatch & 31 records, 2010 is shaping up to be his year. Man of the moment Jubei loved it so much, he wanted to try his hand at remixing it, his first ever remix to boot. The Metalheadz artist grabbed it with both hands and provided this monster reese classic! Hypnotic from the start & an almighty bass drop, if this is his first ever remix, then it won’t be his last! Pessimist is a young talent from Bristol, after receiving a few demos, we wasted no time in snapping him up. “Zulu” is one of the most epic drum & bass tunes of 2010. Hot 12!! DEAD023 Temper D – Break It Down 12″ Vinyl
For the 23rd outing on this imprint deadlyp turns to long time producer temper d, who has had a string of releases on his own imprint and thought it’s time to spread his wings a bit wider as he comes with 2 different tunes than you would expect from him. Both tracks have been doing damage on the dance floor as this 12 offers something for the tech heads and the jump up crew. ‘break it down’ is a techy tearout tune that does what it says on the tin, a short intro that gets straight to the point rolls then gives way to destroying bass, and crazy stabs. One to check for sure. ‘wanna say’ is a gritty styled jump up track . with flowing chords thru out the intro with a whispered vocal ‘ I know what you wanna say’ paired with the crisp beats that take you to the drop. Then all hell is let lose as the gritty b-line and the beats take control clever use of the vocal aid the tracks progress. This tune does serious damage on the floor!!! Support from Temper d , nicky bm, ash attack, to name a few!

LARTSEKRAD Rockwell – Reverse Engineering 12″ Vinyl
Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Artwork: Black Reverse Board sleeve, Bronze Pantone logo and text throughout, all sleeve and label information written backwards in keeping with the reverse concept. Cut in inside-out (record plays from centre label out to the edge) on a Scully Lathe. Release: Less a best kept secret, now a fully fledged artist of the moment Rockwell has been steadily building a reputation as one of the more progressive electronic artists around in 2010, with an ear for a different take on how to move dancefloors whilst also showing an adept ability at beat programming that is setting himself apart from his peers. Darkestral finally release one of the most talked about tracks on underground forums (10K plus posts on a DOA) and unleash the bewildering ‘Reverse Engineering’ – a track solely built from backwards parts, that has been delighting, confounding and confusing dancefloors the world over. Coupled with the polar opposite beauty of ‘Everything (& U)’, which continues the Darkestral love for contrasting sides on releases, and was recently licensed to FabricLive52, this track marks a stamp of quality on the burgeoning minimalist dnb sound by adding the emotional layer that Darkestral aa sides have become known for.

Avant Futura takes us into the depths with its hard hitting kicks, rollin snares, bassline growls and the sax floating around in the atmosphere. The flip Iconia is another bassline fuelled hardhitter. Spooky intro introduces the massive bassline. Big bad heavy beats will pound the speaker to shreds. New D&B Promos

SIRENUK001PT2 Siren – Broken Silence Part 2 12″ Vinyl x 2

New D&B CD

RISECD03 Concord Dawn – The Enemy Within CD
Nestled within what old-world Englishmen would call The Antipodes, New Zealand is truly an exceptional place. Taking huge pride in their native musicians, radio stations are bound by law to give over a fixed percentage of airtime to New Zealand artists. This results in a rather special situation for independent dance music producers, such as Auckland raised Matthew Harvey, a.k.a. Concord Dawn. With a level playing field underground genres like drum & bass have thrived in New Zealand, with producers being lumped in alongside traditional pop stars and rock bands. It’s no overstatement to say that Concord Dawn is an institution in NZ, proven by the presales for ‘The Enemy Within’ on iTunes New Zealand which saw the album slot in at a rather healthy #2 just between Shihad (NZ’s biggest rock band) and Maroon 5. Featuring a selection of guest appearances, from fellow NZ D&B dons Bulletproof and Cern, to ‘80s pop star Rikki Morris ‘The Enemy Within’ provides a rich tapestry of tastes and flavours across the drum & bass spectrum that will prove to be just as popular on the world stage as it is at home.

CD 1 is un-mixed and features all the album tracks. CD 2 is mixed and features all the album tracks plus extra tracks in the mix. After years of success in their relative drum and bass production outfits, Siren is a collaboration of Vice from Vicious Circle and Ruxspin from Universal Project. Their debut album, “Broken Silence”, forthcoming in November 2010 on their own Siren Records has been doing damage on the DJ circuit for some time now. Tracks such as ‘Snorkel’ (included on Andy C’s Nightlife 5 compilation), ‘Gumball Rally’, ‘Rollers Convention’ and ‘Broken Silence’ have been staples in the sets of everyone from Andy C to DJ Marky to Fabio and Chase and Status, as well as the new breed of artist producers such as S.P.Y, Spor and Jubei.

NONPLUS009 Jimmy Edgar – +NXTLVLNXTLVL / My Balance (Last Priority) 12″ Vinyl
Hot off the back of his sexually charged XXX album which included the track ‘Hot Raw Sex’ of which Instra:mental provided one of many remixes, Jimmy Edgar has elevated the Nonplus catalogue with this superb two track 12”. a) Jimmy Edgar ‘+NXTLVLNXTLVL’ Upon listening to this track it’s obvious this guy oozes natural musical talent from every orifice. Jerky electro beats set the backing or playful chords and melodies and the odd bit of pitch bent Gfunkery, all spliced together with the trademark “on the fly” sounding sequencing like he’s played the whole track from start to finish off the top of his head. This is Jimmy Edgar doing what he does best and that is making raw music with his raw talent. aa) Jimmy Edgar ‘My Balance (Last Priority) – ‘My balance’ takes the tempo down somewhat and heres where the real sleaze begins. Wolf whistling synth lines, laid back bass and silky smooth drums merge into an orgy of aural pleasure. Think strip clubs, neon lights, and budget porn flicks and you’ll be someway toimagining what this track sounds like. Perfect backing track for a night between the sheets with that special someone.

DZ001 Data – Hedorah 12″ Vinyl
Data and the guys from Dubzilla bring two monsters from him to their first release. Both tracks have his trade mark production which is deep, dark and heavy. Minimal glichy drums and a grinding bline set you up for a ride then the sub bass cracks open your head! Little white lies has a crisp kick and snare that has time and space to create the scene, haunting vocals then take over with a killer bass this track is so deep you could drown in it. Acid techno samples flow in and out of the tune totally flipping the script from time to time.

Black Sun Empire’s latest project, ‘Lights And Wires’ is the long awaited follow up to 2007′s ‘Endangered Species’ and shows the trio flexing their musical muscles. One half of the album vinyl is set to be released on Shadows Of The Empire, containing a pick of the dubstep tracks taken from ‘Lights And Wires’.From the opening bars of ‘The 405′ it’s clear that Black Sun Empire have retained their distinctly stark techno influences blended with a more refined edge. ‘Dirty Friday’ strays further and deeper, mellowing the aggressive undertones with wide-open synths and delicately placed sound effects. Teaming up with SPL, Black Sun Empire bring you ‘Wasteland’, a track with an epic intro that drops into an apocalyptic vision of the future. Finally ‘Brommer’ enthralls as creeping effects are married with light, skipping beats and captivating bass.

PL010 Dubtek – Dubtek EP 12″ Vinyl
Paradise Lost Recordings is proud to present the first proper release from Seattle’s Dubtek: a 3-track EP in which Dubtek teams up with Australia’s finest, Droid Sector and Boot, as well as Italy’s Mouch to showcase three distinctive sounds. The lead track and a three-way collaboration, The Trancening brings together influences from progressive house/trance and mixes those with proper heavy subheavy dubstep to produce a tranced-up killer which will keep the most traditional dubstep fan satisfied while at the same time cause those more up for epic progressive and trance tunes to break out their glowsticks (well, we hope just in spirit!).  These three accomplished producers demonstrate both their technical prowess in the studio and their talents for stirring up a frenzy on the dancefloor.  The second drop just kills it! On the flip, Dubtek offers up two deeper tracks that are smooth as butter.  Smoke works on a number of different levels bringing in a beautifully constructed smooth as silk bassline to compliment melodic atmospherics and a garage-inspired vocal hook that are sure to bring smiles to those on the dancefloor.  He teams up with Mouch from Venice, Italy to bring us a brilliant, calculated dancefloor builder with dreamy arpeggios and ice-cold sci-fi fx and atmospherics – essential!

DRUNK020 Ekoplekz – Stalag Zero / Distended Dub 12″ Vinyl
300 hand-numbered copies for the world, each sheathed in individually hand-painted sleeves. No repress, means no repress. Punch Drunk, Bristol’s esteemed electronic music imprint, celebrates it’s 20th release with a strictly limited edition 12″ single. This double A-side is also the official debut release by shadowy Bristol-based experimental electronic musician Ekoplekz. As such, it represents something of a departure for the label, for here is an artist who shuns modern digital production techniques in favour of primitive analogue devices, lo-fi cassette recorders and a spontaneous, improvised approach to composition. Taking inspiration from ‘Radiophonic’ soundtracks, early dub reggae, krautrock and post-punk D.I.Y. experimentors like Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle and Robert Rental, Ekoplekz is intent on introducing a new generation to the kind of raw eruptions of sound that first gave birth to the UK’s electronic underground over 30 years ago.

HENCH022 Mensah – Digital Dreamer 12″ Vinyl
Mensah’s debut release on the HENCH imprint, Pulse 80’s, turned heads with its stylish production and out-of-the-box approach. His follow-up release, ‘Untitled Future Funk EP’, was all the talk on the blogs and his remix of Baby D’s ‘Let me be your Fantasy’ has been hailed as one of the hallmark dubstep tracks of 2010. With each new release Mensah’s studio skills and fresh thinking stand out ever clearer. This latest offering will be no disappointment… A. DIGITAL DREAMER A dreamy synth-line commences ‘Digital Dreamer’, which immediately sets the scene for one of Mensah’s more ethereal productions. The harmonic lead-line builds into an other-worldly riff before releasing that tripped-out, bouncing bass rhythm. Synths let loose overhead, twisting and turning the track into the funky number that it is. Once again, something different from the man like Mensah… AA1. KASHMIR (W/NOAH D) Teaming up with US producer, Noah D, the duo creates an echoey and foreboding backdrop to ‘Kashmir’. The mystic vibe quickly graduates with a captivating bassline, weaving its way through the frequencies. Kashmir has achieved that perfect balance between being musicallyintriguing and packing punch for the dancefloor. AA2. BIG UP THE GOONS A familiar arpeggio gently makes way for a gully-goon vocal. You’re then met with a shuddering bassline that goes a long way to create a haunting yet driven soundtrack. Forwardmoving and weighty, the mid-section provides a brief pause for reflection before reverting back to fully-flexed low-end funk.

P51UK020    Reboot The System – Part 2 – Gridlok & Dom / Gridlok    Project 51    12″ Vinyl
This is the 2nd release in a 3 part series showcasing some of the drum and bass scene’s brightest stars remixing selections from Gridlok’s debut album “Break the System”. Side A | Prolix (Ganja/Hardware/Virus) takes Gridlok and Dom’s storming tune “London’s Burning” and sends it even grimier, even nastier. Massive builds and massive drops, with Prolix’s signature ripping basslines in full effect. Side B | During the release of the “AUTOPSY” album we had a remix contest hosted by Sony on their Acidplanet website. The tune was called “Labrat” and the most impressive submission was by none other than drum and bass’s own Audio (Freak/Hardware/Virus). He’s come far since then having just wrapped up his new LP for Virus Recordings, but in that busy studio schedule he managed to give us a chugging new version of his remix which just couldn’t wait to be heard, so here it is! These tunes have been receiving heavy support from many of the top djs in the scene such as: Andy C, AK1200, A-Sides, Bad Company, Cause 4 Concern, Dieselboy, Ed Rush, Friction, Noisia, Pendulum, Total Science, State of Mind, the Upbeats, and many more.

OK021    Mystical Mentality / Real Deal – Genotype    Offkey 12″ Vinyl
Enter Genotype…After the huge success of Offkey #20 The Remixes, We are proud to bring you Genotype. An Old school Hardware legend that is now back on his A-Game. This 12″ for OK takes a step away from his dubbed-out outings soon to be available on Voodoo Music & Exit. The two tracks are Mystical Mentality b/w The Real Deal.It is now Genotypes turn to put his stamp on the Offkey blueprint. A Side: Mystical Mentality: The word ROLLER does not even come close to describing this number. A straight two step is laced with the most hypnotizing percussion one could imagine, bringing the track to the front of many deejays boxes. Do not be fooled into thinking this isn’t Techno influenced- Check Jeff Mills ‘Jet Set’ release and you’ll exactly what we mean, Genotype and Offkey are bringing you another angle on our blueprint and in doing so bridging the gap perfectly between techno and b-boyism. The track is underpinned a massive bass that has guaranteed rewinds & plays from London to Colombia. Time to get Mystical indeed. AA Side: The Real Deal: A break driven tear out from Genotype, amens and subs at the ready. Trademark reverbs and delays in the breakdown single towards the pressure incoming. The drop is pure vibes, and the track demands itself to be played at peak time in the set. A real treat from Genotype- splashes of Old Skool keep the track bubbling throughout and the big bass synonymous with genotype is ever present- driving the track home. The first release on the label from Genotype and what a way to start proceedings!

MODULE003 Pressure Plate / Rodan – Judda / Krakota & Judda Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Nov 2010 sees breakthrough artist Judda provide the third installment for Critical’s sister label Modulations. This Bournemouth-based producer has already received strong support and radio airplay from Radio 1’s Fabio, with releases on Subtitles and CIA – and now, critically, Modulations. True to Kasra’s faith in sounds unexplored, ‘Pressure Plate’ almost transcends space and time armed with its eerie waves of futurism. A clean drum-kit punches itself into a bumpy bassline proudly reminiscent of Ed Rush & Optical’s wormhole era. This funky upbeat stepper delivers a relentless growl, drawing it right back down through the underworld. Judda’s startlingly bright percussion rests neatly beneath a deeply penetrating rumble suitably inspired by the sounds of nu school heroes, Ulterior Motive – a signature quality Hades himself would be proud of. The flip side serves up a collaboration with fellow Bournemouth local, Krakota. A newcomer but no stranger to the scene, their joint venture ‘Rodan’ sounds deceptively simplistic initially – yet its intricacies quickly arise, easily appealing to the energy of the dance. Its naughty crisp snare awakens a hoarse, unforgiving husk which coaxes beneath your skin and induces a chill to the blood, dropping and rising, inviting you into the realms of rolling minimal, except with extra and irresistible bite, bounce and bass. DJ support from Fabio, Kasra, Sabre, Rockwell, Ulterior Motive & more.

CRIT048 Redlines (Break Remix) / Scaremonger – Total Science Feat. Riya / Total Science Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
One of the most highly revered and rotated vocal D&B tracks from the past six months is back, this time with an ice-cold twist ready to take us into the frosty autumnal months. Drawing in the talents of Critical playmate Break to add his deft touch was always going to result in one thing – absolute dance floor devastation! Oozing class while smacking up the dance is something many producers can only dream of….the masterclass starts here. Drifting pads with sexed-up guitar touches intro the ‘Redlines’ remix before the drums kick and we’re away on a blues-infused excursion with full vocal riding on top as the chords roll out. Don’t be fooled though as the fun’s just about to start! A quick repeated refrain and suddenly in crash the amens, edits and the most gut-wrenching sub to demolish the place. Vocal teases run throughout together with swathes of guitar but it’s the sheer tearout that wins in the end. Absolutely fantastic. Flipping things over and Total Science come back with the classic sounds of ‘Scaremonger’. Seemingly an ode to the vibes of yesteryear, this one bounces with the best of them. A hot twostepping break carries the stabbing b-line that morphs subtly as this wicked bubbler moves along with ease. Proper Total Science doing what they do best. DJ support from Andy C, Bailey, Hype, Friction, Cyantific, Logistics and many more.

SSS021 I’m Just Fine / Loud N Proud – Terravita Subsonik Sound Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Subsonik Sound Recordings is the brainchild of Ben Sage & Mark Subsonik. Founded in late 2008, the imprint has already seen much success and has even helped launch the careers of such artists as Fourward of Austria. Ben and Mark had an idea. This was, to release nothing but the best in quality music, that was creatively composed, and meticulously engineered to be the best it could be, and to obtain an outlet to release their own productions without any loss of creative control. This obsessive attention to sonic detail has shaped the imprint into what it is today – A well oiled musical machine.

New D&B Promos

DIS041 Alien / P45 – Survival Dispatch Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. ‘Survival returns yet again on Dispatch with another diverse pairing of tunes. The A-side “Alien” being the monster of the 2 which showcases Survival taking a dancefloor-destroying approach he can pull off with ease, listen on mid-way through the track for a drop-out of epic proportions that can only be described as pure evil. “P45″ on the flip we’d like to think is far more exciting than the standard tax form of the same name and more likely to make you pull a bit of a ‘bass face’ upon hearing; a bubbling roller that switches from bar to bar effortlessly and still maintains that rolling feel. Both tracks doing damage in the clubs and being supported thoroughly by the likes of Bailey (on BBC1xtra) Nymfo, Octane & DLR, Optiv, C4C, Ant TC1, Chris SU, AI and Anile to name a few.’

AUX002    Certainties EP – ASC    Auxiliary 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Following up from the ground breaking genre-defying first 12”, in this second release from Auxiliary, ASC offers up four tracks hand-picked from a selection crafted during the development of his Nothing Is Certain LP on NonPlus+. Four tracks which couldn’t be included on the album due to space constraints find a perfect home on Auxiliary as part of the aptly titled Certainties EP. Up first we have Reality Check, immediately showing an impressive hand of skillfully constructed loops, interjected with metallic stabs over a constant, numbing bass. Developing atmospheres is one of ASC’s key strengths and this track does not disappoint, with a sound that effortlessly evokes the more melancholic brand of sci-fi movie. “Everything around me became suddenly unreal” we hear a voice say; fitting for such an engulfing piece of music. Spectrum provides an alternative feel with a less intense, more electro-inspired motif which handles the trademark minimal Autonomic sound so confidently that ASC virtually ignores the need for that “beat” we might usually expect to hear. Kicks, hats and FX constantly overlap each other, quietly providing an immaculate structure you won’t even notice unfolding. Blips and pops take center stage on Metronomic, a remarkably unique composition chock-full of videogame-style snippets and noises which on their own may have appeared unusable to most but in ASC’s hands somehow come across strikingly well in the mix, ebbing and flowing at an appropriately mechanical pace. Finally, Autoreceptor delves back into that classic atmospheric, Blade Runner-esque sound-set ASC’s listeners keep coming back for. A succession of earthy kick drums from the outset somehow resist the temptation to take over proceedings and instead lead us on a calming journey punctuated by thoughtful strings and synths, with a sparsely-used vocal sample to die for. Stunning.
DJ Support from: Instra:mental, dBridge, Doc Scott, Loxy, Flight, Blu Mar Ten, Sabre, Rockwell, Consequence, Geiom, Presha, Alley Cat and of course, ASC.

a1 ASC – Reality Check
a2 ASC – Spectrum

MODULE004 Try To Forget / Autonomous Robot – Nymfo Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Critical Music’s Modulations offshoot signs out of 2010 with its fourth instalment coming from the young Dutch upstart, Nymfo. Having released on labels such as Ram, Sgn:Ltd, 31, Frequency and Renegade,Nymfo’s talent is becoming all the more noticeable as one to watch for the future. Certainly one of his most solid pieces of work to date, this Modulations release doesn’t hold back with pure vibes from start to finish. ‘Try To Forget’ is exactly what you won’t want to do on hearing this gorgeous slice of D&B. Enjoy as a muted intro of hand claps, soft pads, tinkling fx and smooth vocal washes drift in as a creeping bassline seeps into the mix from the depths, enveloping the listener. An awesome, mesmerising journey ensues with sparse but oh so effective arrangement with the bass riff carrying the mood throughout whilst layers of atmospherics drip over the top to carry us away on what’s possibly the best Modulation yet! As we continue with the clunking clockwork sounds of ‘Autonomous Robot’, rolling in exactly as the name would suggest with tick-tock percussion and a gnarly mid-range bass lick that carries into the rough-riding drop. Then it’s away on a head nodding, foot stomping trip as cool drum splash edits serve to keep things moving on nicely. A fierce little runner to get the darker dance floors bouncing with ease. DJ support from Fabio, Doc Scott, Icicle, Klute, Kasra, Ulterior Motive and more.

FOKUZLP06 Soul Booster – Command Strange Fokuz Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2
After the grand success of Brother’s ‘Hidden Depths’ LP last year & Madmen & Poets ‘Scandinavian Sunday’ early 2010 Fokuz stumbled upon another hidden talent. Hailing from a unusual place is Command Strange.. He is probably Kazakhstan’s first dnb producer at the moment. Yet not bound by borders or boundaries it’s the music what counts here at Fokuz and Command Strange is seriously one of those producers who you’ll need to keep your eye on. That’s why Fokuz proudly presents ‘Soul Booster’ which features a 15 track CD and a limited 2×12″ double pack with 4 of the best tracks we couldn’t leave out of any vinyl lovers collection. The A side is of course the title track ‘Soul Booster’ this dance floor track will boost anybody’s spirits the moment its dropped.. Command Strange sets the tone perfectly for his debut album with this heavy roller.    Turn it over for ‘Rainbow In Your Hand’ which is a sexy roller that’s just to cool for school.. the deep bass line.. the halftime breakdown.. it all fits seamlessly like you heard this guy produce for ages.. Yet still keeping it fresh.. Lush.. Plate 2 contains ‘You Can’t Touch This’.. Command Strange takes the vibe down a bit for a vibing deep roller for those special moments.. If r&b could be d&b then this would be its slow jam.. For the last side we turn to ‘Want You Back’.. one last time we crank it up a notch with some good ol rolling breakbeats and smooth piano touches.. A brilliant jazzy roller with a vibe like no other. With this LP sampler Command Strange shows he’s a man with many talents.. His sounds takes you all over the deeper side of dnb and back again.

(Moodymann) for Urban Tribe s debut album “The collapse of modern culture” on Mo Wax and their latest project “Program 1-12″ released on Kenny Dixon Jrs label Mahogani Music and The recent “Loyal Opposition” releases on Planet E. SUBWAYDS001    Destination EP 1 – Various Artists    Subway 12″ Vinyl x 2
Subway Recordings has been a steady force within the dubstep scene the last 3 years.. Not only as a label but also as one of the most forward thinking party crews on the Dutch scene. Some of the leading Dubstep names have passed through Subway first before becoming the new rockstars of today. By flexing its sides from deep to hardcore they have been showing how far the word dubstep bends into multiple angles.. After releasing quality tunes like “Missed Calls”, “Unknown Suspect” & especially last year’s hotly tipped “Seeeriousss” its certain that this label knows quality when they hear it…And this Destination Compilation has the word quality written alllll over it.. Ranging from Mutant Funky/Dubstep to Garage combined with some of the grittiest & darkest sounds Dubstep has to offer… Subway once again shows what Dubstep is all about… Not clinging to styles or focusing on sub genres.. this compilation is all about “Dubstep” in every sense of the word…

RS1009 Stereo Freeze – Untold R&S Records 12″ Vinyl
R&S follow the massive singles from Pariah, James Blake, Model 500 and Space Dimension Controller with the debut release on the label by Untold. One of the leading lights of the scene, his Hemlock label continues to blur the boundaries between, dubstep, house and techno and also provides a home for likeminded souls James Blake and Ramadanman. When not running and recording for Hemlock he also records for Hessle and Hotflush, remixes for the likes of Planet Mu and Bpitch, and also has a debut album on the horizon. His music makes total sense on R&S, taking inspiration from the classic house, techno, jungle and rave that made the label what it is. Put this all together with the finesse and skill of one of the most hyped UK producers around and it’s a no brainer that it’s another essential slab of wax from the truly back on form label. ‘Stereo Freeze’ is aimed directly at the dancefloor and updates the classic Detroit electro sound for 2010. It’s going to unite the old school R&S heads who can file it with their dusty Dopplereffekt and Model 500 vinyl, and the young enthusiasts who have discovered the label through James Blake and Pariah. Play Loud! ‘Mass Dreams Of The Future’ mixes muted rave stabs and more electro basslines over some shuffling future house beats and deft sub bass, and perfectly accompanies the lairier a-side. With both producer and label having the utmost respect for each other, this was always going to be a release worth waiting for.

PL010 Dubtek EP – Dubtek Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl

New D&B CD

EXITCD006    Ritual Dance LP – Genotype    Exit Records CD
After a lengthy break from the electronic music world, Genotype is back with an LP for Exit Records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm. Having started his music career in the mid nineties under the legendary alias Just Jungle, with releases on the massively influential labels of that era such as Trouble On Vinyl, Renegade Hardware and Reinforced Records, its no surprise that he’s managed to capture the essence of rawness in his recent music akin to the early years of Jungle. Many producers have tried and failed to bring back the old skool sound with an original flavor but Genotype has managed this by resisting the temptation to lash in the tired old classic breaks and instead has drawn for the more organic sounding percussion and drum kits. The dubbed out theme runs throughout the album paying homage to his love for West Indian music which he has been involved in for many years and naturally influences the music he creates. Genotype is a man of few words and prefers to let his music do the talking so check out the album and draw your own conclusions.

New D&B Releases

TRIPS003 Kontroller / ABTN – Silent Witness & Break Triple Seed 12″ Vinyl
Welcome to the third release on Triple Seed. This time, featuring the classic partnership of Silent Witness & Break.
A. Kontroller – This number takes no prisoners with its anthemic reece and breakbeat driven madness. Designed to please crowds, this one will empower the dj and dress down his or her victims. Snippets of eighties pop vocals and guitar punctuate the lazer fight bass stabs providing all the tone and colour necessary to illuminate any flagging dance floor. Prepare to get caught in a mosh when this goes off.
AA. ABTN – Heads down! ABTN is two step tour de force of bass beats and atmosphere. The initial calm gives way to a ridiculously heavy bass growl and crisp beats that will entrance any self respecting party goer. Stripped down and serious, the contemporary minimal feel is backed up by typically beefy production that (really) will stand the test of time. DJ support from Andy C, Ed Rush, Goldie, Friction, Bad Company, Bailey, Fierce, Survival, Noisia, and more…

EXITLP006    Ritual Dance LP – Genotype    Exit Records 3×10”

CRIT048    Redlines (Break Remix) / Scaremonger – Total Science Feat. Riya / Total Science    Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Limited finish copy promos.

MAC021    Rebel Music – Soul intent    Mach II Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Randalls Mac 2 recordings showcases another banging release with the return of fast moving breakthrough artist Soul intent. Having all ready featured on the label on the 17th release back in 2008 and on the recent justice league EP Soul intent returns once again to show us how rolling drum n bass should be done. The A side ” Rebel music” punches through with razor sharp breaks that bring the track to some seriously sub low basslines. Haunting vocals lead through the track introducing some seriously deep FX and strings that make this track one stone cold killer. The flip “Cybergroove” makes for a more upbeat affair but certainly shows Soul intents versatility as an artist. Percussion lead breaks and some haunting strings cut into a bassline that punches its way throughout the track before cutting into a FX lead breakdown. DJ support from : Randall, AI, Klute, Doc scott, Survival, Fabio, Crissy criss and eveson Radio – BBC 1Xtra and Kool FM

MEDI029 Feel It EP – V.I.V.E.K Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl x 2

Please note there is no CD with this pressing. The latest release on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint is a four track double pack Vinyl. It comes on the back of his first Medi release last year ‘Kulture’ b/w ‘Meditation Rock’ and countless dubplates that you’ll no doubt have heard if you’ve checked the Anti Social Entertainment on Rinse FM. Fusing digidub, sound system deep bass, rolling percussion, a hint of Berlin techno it all adds up to those ‘Medi’ style vibes; eyes down, blissed out, heavy weight music. The title track, ‘Feel It’ kicks things off in fine style with some of the most infectious rolling tablas – his percussion is just sublime. A vocal sample declaring the weight of your bass and the largeness of your soundsystem is all the track needs to usher in a chest thumping sub sonic bass tone and there is no way back you’re sucked into that soup of sub bass frequencies. ‘Grandfather Clock’ counts down to a dance floor meltdown when the metronome-like sample, half tempo drum patterns and hefty bass melts into blazing techno buzzes that just keep coming, it’s those killer synths that make it, truly coming from nowhere. The deeply blissful ‘Motherland’ is one for the meditative crew, subtle but weighty bass pulses roll off half stepping rhythms, tablas and all that good stuff all accented with Indian vocals instrumentation. It’s so deep, minimal it would make Youngsta proud. The final track ‘Strategy’ is a roller with a garage kind of swing to it, it skips along with big room dub techno chords twisting in and out of the bumpy beats it really comes alive and picks up the pace. Pure vibes all the way.

NMBRS11    Myth – Roska & Untold    Numbers 12″ Vinyl
Limited supply. Numbers is proud to present the debut release from Roska & Untold. In a move that is bound to shake up the markets, Long Range and Myth are the latest in dancefloor innovations brought to you by Messrs Jack Dunning (aka Untold; CEO of Hemlock Records) and Wayne Goodlit (aka Roska; MD of Roska Kicks and Snares). With fears over a lack of imagination in House music at an all time high, these two producers have joined forces to create two envelope-pushing solutions to this highly contentious issue. After several consultations a deal was sealed with the board at Numbers who in turn offered to provide logistical and technical support. A1 – Myth was constructed from the careful sculpture of demented wailing horns underpinned by precision crafted beats and bass. Leading industry experts have been hailing this as a step forward in the merger between Grime and House. AA1 – Long Range, inspired by the groundbreaking work performed in the KMS and Prescription labs of Chicago & Detroit respectively, resulting in a fresh House hybrid powered by the patented Roska Kicks and Snares and those deadly Untold subs.

NOMIC002    Seems Like / The Cycle Ft. Skream – Riya    Autonomic 12″ Vinyl

Finish copy promo. Next in line on a very busy Autonomic schedule is a single from one of the hottest vocal talents around, Riya. Lacing the Autonomic sound with her voice was an obvious choice for the Autonomic camp and the results are two timeless tracks that have been picked up on by a huge cross section of DJs such as Skream, Youngsta,dBridge, Instra:mental and many more. A) Riya – Seems Like – Having become popular after featuring on the Fabric/dBridge and Instra:mental Autonomic CD, this track has rightly been given a home on the Autonomic imprint and has been eagerly awaited by many. artist, this one was never going to fail. AA) Riya – The Cycle – The AA side offers us a different angle from Riya, with a steadily building backing track her vocals loop in a hypnotic and enchanting cycle around Rhodes chords and a pumping heartbeatlike 4×4 bassline. PAL061 Assimilation – John Tejada & Josh Humphrey Palette Recordings 12″ Vinyl

Finish copy. Tejada and Humphrey made their debut together late in 09 with their “Marooned,” ep. “Assimilation” continues the theme of being marooned in Los Angeles. The four works compiled here are the result of the best moments out of 20 recording sessions. The music is for the most part assembled with analog instruments with Humphrey and Tejada bringing their modular gear together for the sessions. Humphrey’s knowledge of synths and programming is quite extensive. He until recently helped operate LA based Big City Music, a dealer of modular and boutique synthesizers.
The four works cover a wide range. “Assimilation” builds up panning modular basslines and swirling percussion with a building chord line that brings things together as the drums build. “Culture Shock” uses pitch shifting trickery to transpose the main melodic hook slamming it into nasty modular bass modulation giving the track it’s pretty/dark edge. “Adaptation” keeps it’s modular touches a bit more subtle focusing on classic melodic Tejada chords and nostalgic beats. “Subversion” rounds things out with a non 4/4 piece perhaps being the most nostalgic moment of the ep. This highly melodic uplifting track takes it’s cues from happy musical memories. Classic chords, 808 beats, and some melodic modular lines to close out the ep.

AWK002 Mango Tree / 2_12 – Dodger Man Awkward Movements 12″ Vinyl
Very limited finished copy promo. Awkward Movements returns to release the debut from London’s Dodger Man – one of the most talked-about new producers of the last 12 months. And with good reason. Dodger Man’s multi-instrumentalist background opened the door for his high-profile sets bombed with back-to-back dubs of his own creation. His workings played-out live have gained him a reputation as one of the top emerging DJs, the height of which came following an impressive set at Bloc Weekend, after being hand- picked by Joy Orbison to share the bill. The natural alignment with Awkward Movements has served up his highly-anticipated debut record, and it doesn’t disappoint. Marking Dodger Man’s official debut, Mango Tree steps in where the underground bass sound’s left off. Combining the same elements that pushed Floating Points and SBTRKT to the forefront in 2009 with the vibes that future garage has brought in 2010, Dodger Man takes it up with a deep bass rhythm, crunchy hi-end synth and drums for the decks and dancefloor. Bridging the gap between tech and dub, 2_12 is the stripped down evil-twin on the B-side. Take a complex 22 track and strip it to its core without losing it’s personality and you’ve almost arrived. A uniquely complex tune – wanting to burst out but eerily contained in its black hole minimal approach of grinded synth stabs and one-shot styled drums.

DRUNK019    The Hum / rrrr – Peverelist & Hyetal    Punch Drunk Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo.

PRDM003 Ratville Remixed Cuts #1 – Goth Trad / DJ Tuttle Publicriddim 12″ Vinyl

Finished copy 180 gram Vinyl. RATVILLE is a new school dub band releasing their 1st album Dubs on the Corner in 2009, leaving serious after effects throughout the country. This time, GOTH-TRAD and DJ TUTTLE, east – west dubstep masters remixed the tracks to create a challenging piece of vinyl cut!! Remix was done by two artists, contributing to the spread of dubstep in Japan. As a host of Back To Chill releasing from UK’s one and only DEEP MEDI MUSIK, GOTH-TRAD is now achieving worldwide prominence. On the other hand, leader of DUBSTEP RUDE, DJ TUTTLE is out to shake things up establishing a new label NODE with Akira Ohashi from Psycheouts G.
GOTH-TRAD’s side modestly builds up till it finally rocks the floor in the latter half. May suit for outdoor performances. Heavy duty 808 type kick supporting bottom end with metal-like percussion and SEs floating in the air, DJ TUTTLE side is made for the darkest closed chambers to inhale the low frequency. This is the spearhead of dubstep made in Japan. Hands-on approach of the two made a sensational reaction with Ratvilleafs sound, pushing it to the next dimension. Punch Drunk Records prepare “Worth The Weight – Bristol Dubstep Classics” compilation

Punch Drunk Records prepare “Worth The Weight – Bristol Dubstep Classics” compilation

Posted 23 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Punch Drunk presents: V/A – ‘Worth the Weight – Bristol Dubstep Classics’

“I knew straight away that this was a sound that would fit perfectly in Bristol – there is a lot of tension in the music that carries a satisfactory darkness with it, but it’s also lazy music. You don’t have to dance hard to move with it – it was born with a reefer in its gob!”

So said Pinch when I interviewed him in February 2005. Having witnessed the early DMZ and FWD>> raves that spawned this new sound we now refer to as Dubstep, and having gradually begun integrating it into the fabric of Bristol’s existing club scene, this young DJ’s instincts were proving correct. The following month I attended one of his Context nights – a dubsession by Loefah and Skream, on one of their earliest forays outside the Capital – and experienced for myself the sheer physical impact of dubstep at soundsystem volume. But even that was just a hint of what was to come. In April, Subloaded II sent a subsonic shockwave through the city, as Bristol shuddered under the weight of DMZ’s bass meditations. Those who survived the onslaught were changed forever, and Bristol’s destiny as dubstep’s second city became assured.

May 2005 saw the debut release on Pinch’s Tectonic imprint, which was the first of many new dubstep labels to emerge from the city. Being so much smaller than London, Bristol’s new generation of bedroom DJs and producers mingled freely in a close-knit community centred around the Rooted Records shop and the new club spaces (Dubloaded, Sub- loaded, Ruffnek Diskotek, Noir, HENCH) which sprang-up over the following months to cater for this rapidly expanding scene. Beats and ideas were eagerly exchanged on freshly-burned cd-rs in a period of unprecedented communal activity and cooperation, which would ultimately draw in and re-energise many of the city’s older generation of bass-explorers. Indeed, Bristol’s historical association with bass-orientated music was a crucial factor in the formation of a distinct and cohesive sound that triggered a feedback-loop of influence back to both London and the world beyond.

Almost inevitably, the Bristol micro-scene outgrew it’s grassroots, as producer-DJs like Headhunter, Appleblim, Joker, RSD, Pinch and Peverelist soon found themselves playing venues all over the planet. Once again, the ‘Bristol Sound’ had become an international phenomenon. Yet even today the core community still comes together for the regular mid- week Dubloaded sessions, which remain a testament to this city’s unshakable sense of strength and solidarity, as SGT. Pokes (the Honorary Bristolian who led the first charge at Subloaded all those years ago) calls the monthly congrega- tion to prayer.

New DnB CD

AMLPCD01 The Mesozoic Era (CD) – Alaska Arctic Music CD
Often choosing to position himself as an outsider, Alaska’s success has never been limited to that of the UK- orientated drum and bass scene. He has collaborated under the Paradox name with some of greatest contemporary musicians the world has to offer, including Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Shobha Gurtu, Toshinori Kondo and Bernie Worrell. His new album The Mesozic Era which is to be released on May 24th 2010, is the third in a trilogy of solo Alaska lp’s and a follow up to 2006’s successful Arctic Foundations.
The stunning packaging boasts Triple Snow-White Vinyl and a Solid-Black Compact Disc, something that hasn’t been manufactured before in drum and bass. As a bonus, the CD includes more from the infamous Sample Me series – specially edited breakbeat samples for aspiring producers to loop and splice – and shows Alaska’s commitment to the grass roots of the scene, giving something back to the fans and those he’s inspired. When he’s not in the studio, Alaska is inevitably on tour and continues to entertain crowds with his live shows truly worldwide (having only just returned from Alaska shows in Australia). Armed only with his trusty Amiga, synths and a mic, he performs a truly live PA, reconstructing tracks from his back catalogue and editing beats on the fly. He has performed over 180 live PA’s covering Australia, USA, Asia, Europe and beyond, and continues to venture into unchartered territory to represent his sound. It’s been 4 years since the Arctic Foundations album and a decade has passed by for the fans of the Virtual Virtuosos LP so It’s about time Alaska delivered the third chapter to complete the ambient-jungle trilogy. Alaska has been living in sub-zero temperatures whilst programming the album, and the frostbite’s reflected in every avenue of the LP. The album features pure ambient-jungle, Sample Me drum patterns for producers to sample, downtempo drum and bass and the debut ambient collaboration of Alaska & Robert Manos plus famous trance siren Kirsty Hawkshaw returns for two numbers on the LP. Arctic Music has raised the bar to deliver unique formats for analogue and digital lovers alike, with stunning and beautiful Triple Snow-White Vinyl and Solid-Black Compact Disc packages. Both 12” vinyl and compact disc versions offer material exclusive to each format, and all solid-black disc versions feature extended mix’s taking the album a step further.

PRINT002 Shallow Grave – Zero T & Mosus / Beta 2 Footprints Music 12″ Vinyl
ZT and his Kiwi buddy get a bit rowdy this time, with a heavy inspration from the early Virus sound of 1998-99. “Shallow Grave” sneaks in a kicks you in the gut and pounds you like Giant Haystacks!! as the vocal sample states….”.i roam when its dark, and take you to some secret place and bury you” Indeed! Mr.T decided to keep it in the family , Irish-Style, for the 1st two 12″s. So after old cohort Calibre provided the 1st flip side, next up is Zero’s original colaborative partner BETA 2. Its now 10 years since the pair debuted on 4 HERO’s Reinforced, and a long awaited return to the game from BETA 2 looms large! ” CABIN PHEVER” is classic ‘Blue Note’ buisness, for those that know! Beta tickles the ivories with aplom, plucks the Double Bass and chops a break in a style reminiscent of that ginger Ninja , Rupert Parkes (aka Photek).. Two words: FILM-NOIR.
Heavy support from the likes of Marcus Intalex, Jubei, Ulterior Motive, Bailey, Loxy, Ed Rush etc.

BRD005 Vamonos / High Technology – DaVIP & Encode Breed 12 Inches 12″ Vinyl
From the outside, it would appear that Breed 12 Inches has a unique bond with The Motherland, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Reaching our 5th release, 3 of which have already featured Russian artists, Breed 12 Inches is proud to introduce DaVIP & Encode onto the mainstage. Like their Russian counterparts who have also seen a release on Breed 12 Inches, this Russian duo hold nothing back, offering a huge 12” that has been literally cained by every DJ in the scene, from Audio to John B. One 12” of two superbly varying tracks, the collaboration of two of Russia’s rising artists backs Breed’s mission of developing and showcasing the best rising talent around. The A-side ‘Vamanos’, is that tune that you will have all heard over the last few months. Receiving welcomed and much appreciated support from the scene’s biggest, ‘Vamano’s has been jokingly dubbed “the most rewound tune of 2010”. Raw, electric and uncomprising – Russia in all of its glory. The B-side ‘High Technology’, is something a little different. A melodic, seemingly therapeutic melody, blended intricately with a stomping drum track, provides the foundations for a dancefloor orientated track – perfectly complimenting its counterpart on the A-side. The Russian pair have raised the bar for Breed 12 Inches once again, and with BRD006 + BRD007 already lined up, you’ll just have to keep an ear out.

CRIT046 Erase / Locked Up – Stray Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy Promo’s. Bringing yet more total refreshment is Kasra’s Critical movement with what is yet another example of superlative A&R’ing skills. Stray is a name that’s surfaced previously on the Critical Sound album and more recently as a bonus remix on Sabre’s LP but this is his first solo single release and as you can imagine with fans like Gilles Peterson waiting in the wings, it’s most definitely a keeper. ‘Locked Up’ is a welcome shot in the arm for drum & bass heads and electronic fans alike. Fusing techno and 80’s sensibilities over a razor-sharp break workout, it’s absolutely phenomenal. Balearic, beautiful and thoughtful music that manages to straddle the dance floor/home listening divide with ease with its soothing piano lines, simple lead and rumbling bass. One to sit and watch the sunset to, then get up and dance once the lights go down. Things get darker on the flip with ‘Erase’. A life-support bleep rings from the start under cinematic strings and pads with a sparse break until an eerie soundscape dropout creeps us all out. Then back comes that break and a walking bassline as Stray starts to play with our minds dropping in some fierce old-skool edits and a synth line straight out of a horror film to make for an utterly compelling slice of experimental drum & bass. DJ support from Goldie, Logistics, Kasra, Nutone, Spectrasoul, Friction and many more.

SCB001 20_4 – SCB SCB 12″ Vinyl
Very limited finished copy. After a seminal remix of Scuba’s Hard Boiled on Hotflush in 2008, and the most popular mix of 2009 on mnml ssgs, this is the first proper release from Hotflush Recordings boss Paul Rose’s SCB project.
What the DJ’s are saying:
James Holden (Border Community) – “Classy, both sides of it”.
Laurent Garnier (F Communications) – “Super organic deeep techno. Love”
Chris Burkhalter (Resident Advisor) – “20_4 makes for a smooth segue into the 4/4 stylings Paul Rose has been embracing. Then “3_5″ dives head-first into melodic deep techno. But, for all that’s changed, the spare structures and arid sound design are unmistakably Scuba. Love it!”

HEK007 Beacon – LV & Untold Hemlock Recordings 12″ Vinyl
The much in demand collab by LV & Untold finally hits wax, back with a stunning Mount Kimbie remix. LV & Untold – Beacon – Possibly the most minimal tune to date by either artist, Beacon rolls on a bare bones set-up of deep swung bass, barely-there percussion and simple bleep-track melody. In the true spirit of the original dubstep pioneers, making very little, sound very BIG.
LV & Untold Beacon (Mount Kimbie Remix) – Mount Kimbie deliver a stunning remix. Layering a heap of their trademark melody onto the intro, following that with an instantly memorable rave hook, then easing us out gently with some sweeeet R&B inflected chopped vocals. Stunning stuff.
Big support across the board by Mary Anne Hobbs, Ben UFO, Ramadanman, Gilles Peterson, Brackles & Shortstuff , Rob Da Bank and more.

RED002 Avoid The Noid / Duality – DJG Pushing Red 12″ Vinyl
Known in many circles of dubstep and similar styles as one of the hottest up & comers, DJG has graced us with one of, what we think is his best release to date. Both sides showing his diversity & versatility as a producer and musician. A San Francisco native, DJG has been releasing music on many acclaimed labels, building his reputation and forging ahead with his unique take on dubstep.
A. Avoid The Noid: From the start, the listener is propelled into the pure energy of this track. A steady 4/4 kick drum keeps the momentum along with scattered snares. A deep, bouncy bassline pull everything together in style along with twinkling keys and a nice short vocal. Dubsteppers who like their music with a techno tinge will love this along some tech house listeners. A great piece of energetic music!
AA. Duality: One of our favorite tunes we’ve heard in a long time and are very proud to be releasing this. A minimal intro leads into a punchy snare that slaps you across the face while the drum fill in between keep things interesting. A huge sub bassline will keep any sound system on it’s toes. This tune is all about patience and the build up to a vocal that sits so well, it’s hard to imagine a tune around like it atm. A piece of music you just have to hear to believe!
DJ Support: RSD, 2562, Headhunter, Komonazmuk, J Sparrow, Synkro, F, Jus Wan, XI, Distal, Rob Booth.

DRUNK016 Anidea – Guido Punch Drunk Records 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy. ‘Anidea’ is the debut album from young Bristol based producer Guido, who alongside Joker and Gemmy, has trail blazed his way to the forefront of UK dance music. His two 12” releases, ‘Orchestral Lab’ and ‘Beautiful Complication’ on Peverelist’s Punch Drunk label in 2009, and recently completed remixes for Island Records and Tectonic Records, have garnered Guido extensive press coverage from specialist underground blogs to The Guardian broadsheet. This album is the first to emerge from the trio, who have
already made an indelible mark on UK underground music. Guido cut his teeth in the embryonic mid-decade Bristol Grime scene, producing instrumental’s for MCs and vocalists culminating in his ‘Unleashed’ mixtape in 2006. His production style shares the ultra vivid colour, melody and rugged texture of golden era Davinche, Skepta and Ruff Squad’s Rapid but also the playfulness and pop sensibility of Timbaland or Neptunes without losing underground edge or appeal.

MEDI027 Tenopause / Discreet Dub – Calibre Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Calibre flexes his dubstep muscles, here making his second outing on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint – the first was a subtle rolling garage-like affair that had all the hallmarks of Calibre’s drum & bass sound as well as Deep Medi’s deepness. The highlight here has to be ‘Tenopause,’ where Calibre’s knack for subtle rolling percussive bliss is in full effect. The hi-hats draw you in with their fluid forward motion and when they play off the kicks and that addictive bass line pulses with hypnotic energy before flailing off into open space like it’s ricocheted off a passing space cruiser, you’re deep into eyes down zoned out, head nod, arm shake territory. ‘Discreet Dub’ is a more spaced out affair, slowing things down to a half step and upping the atmosphere as the bass seduces you into a state of bliss as it shifts amongst the eerie Middle Eastern melodies. West Norwood Cassette Libarary aka Bob Bhamra, one Half of DATA 70, presents the debut release on WNCL Recordings. ‘What It Is’ hangs techno stabs sub bas, old scook bleeps and a shuffling break around a dubstep tempo. Brackles on remix duties, stylishly takes essential elements of the original and shifts the tempo to provide another one of his genre bending productions – a psychedelic space jam that’s broken enough for any dancefloor.

ATM002 Spectrum Falls / Giga – Ital Tek Atom River 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy Promo’s. Gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated second full length ‘Midnight Colour’ on Planet Mu in June, Ital Tek drops two multi-coloured cuts for the second single on his own Atom River label. The A side ‘Spectrum Falls’ is a cascade of arpeggios, steel drum-like melodies and cutting saw-tooth bass. The track is already featuring in DJ sets from the likes of Surgeon and Starkey and is set to appear on the Fabric53 album. ‘Giga’ on the flip is a long time staple and favourite of Ital Tek’s DJ sets. A tough, swung 2-step beat, underpinned with bouncing sub bass and washes of reverberated fuzzed out chords and dub stacks. The first taste of what will be a very busy year for this producer.

PL009 Interpretazioni EP – The Subdivision Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. The SubDivision round up some of some of dubstep’s heaviest and dirtiest mercenaries for the latest Paradise Lost offering of 4 remixes on the Interpretazioni EP. Roguestar starts things off with what can only be considered an epic remix of an already epic track, Devil’s Kiss. Full throttle from the start and straddling the line between dubstep and breakstep, this track will appeal to anyone needing to destroy the floor at 3AM. Lonewolf goes dirt for his remix of The Messenger, bringing the heat with his notorious filthy style, incorporating heavy synths with nasty breaks. On the flip, Djunya takes things to the dark side of dub, with his re-take on the bizzarely spacey Elephant Walk. Currently a favorite of DJs pushing the deeper sounds, Djunya brings in heavy reverbs, 8-bit stabs, and his trademark bassline business to produce a brilliant and complex sound. Vesicle round off the release with what might be their heaviest production yet on the remix of The Rose. Junglist vibes and bass terrorism combine to produce devastating material showing off the impressive skills of these up-and-comers from Finland. With something for everyone on this release, Paradise Lost is going from strength to strength.

a2 The Subdivision – The Messenger (Lone Wolf remix)
b1 The Subdivision – Elephant Walk (Djunya remix)
