CRIT046 Erase / Locked Up – Stray Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Bringing yet more total refreshment is Kasra’s Critical movement with what is yet another example of superlative A&R’ing skills. Stray is a name that’s surfaced previously on the Critical Sound album and more recently as a bonus remix on Sabre’s LP but this is his first solo single release and as you can imagine with fans like Gilles Peterson waiting in the wings, it’s most definitely a keeper. ‘Locked Up’ is a welcome shot in the arm for drum & bass heads and electronic fans alike. Fusing techno and 80’s sensibilities over a razorsharp break workout, it’s absolutely phenomenal. Balearic, beautiful and thoughtful music that manages to straddle the dance floor/home listening divide with ease with its soothing piano lines, simple lead and rumbling bass. One to sit and watch the sunset to, then get up and dance once the lights go down. Things get darker on the flip with ‘Erase’. A life-support bleep rings from the start under cinematic strings and pads with a sparse break until an eerie soundscape dropout creeps us all out. Then back comes that break and a walking bassline as Stray starts to play with our minds dropping in some fierce old-skool edits and a synth line straight out of a horror film to make for an utterly compelling slice of experimental drum & bass. Another new release, another new talent. Breed 12 Inches’ ear for talent is becoming a cornerstone of the scene, and BRD007 intends to make no change to that. Artists Telekinesis and Kinetik assume the reigns of the latest release, with two iconically large tracks – ‘Deja Vu’ and ‘Lithium’. Working with the develop side at Breed 12 Inches, both production outfits have produced a well engineered 12″ to be proud of, and can now sit back and watch it do damage on a global scale. Already beginning to feature heavily in the rotation from the scenes finest, BRD007 is scheduled for 7th June 2010 full release, with digital release due shortly after.
Slovenia’s two brightest young stars tag-team with Kinetik, in a ferociously infective 12″. Sonically prominent, and rhythmically outstanding, BRD007 builds to the Breed 12 Inches back catalogue of impressive artist development, matched by no other label around. ‘Deja Vu’ points towards the kind of tune that most wish they had produced, but few can actually pull off. Aggressive, operatic, rolling, and employing influences from a wealth of outside resources, BRD007′s A-side is the perfect arrival for Telekinesis onto the world platform. Lithium’s vibe and funk-influenced arrangement constitutes to what we would called a ‘proper roller’. Looking back to go forward we see Bladerunner and Serum going in hard with a 12” brimming with jungle riddims guaranteed to have the rudest of rudeboys skanking out as Critical shows its undeniable versatility once more. Bladerunner steps up first with the evocative, cinematic intro of ‘Back To the Jungle’, that manages to set the scene perfectly for what’s to come with tom-tom hits, deep forest atmospherics and a certain “every time I think I’m gonna wake up back in the jungle..” sample. As he says it that’s exactly what we do as in crash the breaks, mentasm stabs and the largest of basslines that takes so things old-skool you could almost swear it was 1994 again. Sometimes they really do make them like they used to and we’re very pleased that they do, phenomenal.
Teaming up with Serum on the flip sees the pair continuing the theme with ‘Who Jah Bless’, another excursion right back to the roots. Skipping breaks, bleep fx and sax pave the way to one of the all time classic studio techniques synonymous with jungle/drum & bass – the time-stretched vocal! From his early days working at Square Dance Studios in Nottingham engineering for celebrated labels such as Time and DiY his unquestionable talent has seen him DJ all over the world, remix tracks on labels such as Defected, Buzzin’ Fly, Freerange and Dessous and release numerous records under various guises such as Furry Phreaks, DJ Profile and Presence. Under the moniker of Presence he teamed up with Massive Attack vocalist Shara Nelson to create the deep house anthem “Sense of Danger” which was released on the seminal deep house label Pagan. With Shara’s deeply emotive vocal layered over tough beats, metallic synths and soaring strings, this still sounds as fresh and as relevant as it did 12 years ago. This release sees the first drum & bass remix of the series, which we have entrusted in the accomplished hands of Dominick Martin aka Calibre. Anyone familiar with his work or who has heard his most recent album “Shine A Light” will know he is an artist unconfined to the restraints of the norm, and he displays this by flipping the original vocal on its head to create an alternative chorus to the original, embellished with stirring classical strings and spooky pads.

Few artists nowadays can claim true originality in the music they make; artists who have their own unique sound. You can easily spot a DJ Premier break, an M.I.A. chant, or a Timbaland beat, because these are the artists who have etched out their own niche in the musical forum. These people push the envelope with their production, keeping things fresh, exciting and interesting for us lowly listeners. Steve Spacek is one of these people.
Steve White forged his music career in the early 90’s with the dance act Stex, which also featured Johnny Marr of The Smiths. He went on to found the band Spacek in the mid-90s, and quickly found underground success. Their first release, “Eve”, gained favour with many respected people in the industry, resulting in them signing to Mos Def’s GoodTree imprint and Island Records in the UK. The late J Dilla offerered up remix duties on a package that included contributions from the Roots’ Black Thought, Frank n Dank and Mos Def himself. Their debut album, “Curvatia”, was critically acclaimed, and displayed the group’s complex and challenging sensibilities, establishing them as a promising new talent in the British alternative music scene. “Vintage Hi-Tech” followed in 2003, drawing high praise from critics who called it “a downtempo musical masterpiece that draws no comparison”, and they were heralded by Style magazine as “the Radiohead of soul”.
“Black Pocket The Album” is instrumental soul at its best, an exploration into grooves and the spaces within. Over the series, Black Pocket has shown the diversity that’s possible within the soul genre, and this album pulls all those possibilities together. Every track on here shows a producer who is totally in control of his sonic surroundings: a myriad of splices and lush quirks which – like a jigsaw – resolve themselves to reveal the beauty of the whole. “Black Pocket” is an album which blows away all the usual clichés found in
the music behind soul and brings to you a future full of potential and promise.
Steve Spacek, the acclaimed voice behind the ground-breaking genre-pushing group Spacek (who were championed by everyone from Entertainment Weekly to Mos Def), made a name for himself at the turn of the century with the song “Eve’ (covered by Dwele). The song set off a worldwide buzz on Steve as a singer and his group’s futuristic sound. Imagine a robot performer in the future, in love with hip hop beatology and skillful enough to twist it into new shapes, programmed with an infused knowledge of the biographies of Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and Leroy Hutson as source material for lyric writing and you might have an idea of the Spacek sound – Robotic, futuristic, hip-hop based soul. Steve Spacek has also worked with Mark Pritchard on his recent Harmonic 313 album, or their joint 12″ on Warp this year under the alias Africa Hi Tech. His back catalogue, includes labels like Giles Petersons Brownswood, BBE, and more recently he had a Blackpocket release on Fat City which had a Martyn Remix.

HFCD004 Crooks & Lovers – Mount Kimbie Hotflush Recordings CD
Adding a percussive and experimental edge to the current class of post-dubstep pioneers, Mount Kimbie, the duo of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos – are set to release their highly anticipated debut album ‘Crooks & Lovers’ on Scuba’s Hotflush label in July. Mount Kimbie’s first two EPs – ‘Maybes’ and ‘Sketch On Glass’ – seemed like explorations of spaces so private that all within earshot were instantly turned into voyeurs. The experience was less like listening to music and more like eavesdropping on the machinations of a lone mind – albeit a lone mind surrounded by and retreating from millions of other minds. Difficult to categorise, the lush EPs caused a commotion when released last year with ‘Sketch On Glass’ recently undergoing reworks from the likes of Faulty DL, SCB (Scuba’s darker techno alias) and their sometime collaborator James Blake. With their own remixes (Foals and The xx) becoming hot property, Mount Kimbie have been a core part of the growing scene in London often associated with labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio. Dom and Kai met whilst at Southbank University, pushed together in a student halls that was previously a mental asylum – where the ceilings were still ridiculously high to stop patients hanging themselves: “a cold, joyless, concrete building – the sort of building where you’d drop a pen and the sound would just go on and on in an echo.” Armed with found sound snips and a siege mentality, Kai and Dom set about turning London’s ambience into rhythm, its chaos into coherence. Traces of influence remain – the hard-earned spaces of Burial and The Bug vie with the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu and Grouper’s sad-eyed glow, D’Angelo’s pervert soul gets cleansed in the intimacy of Phil Elvrum’s Microphones, Angelo Badalamenti’s swollen ‘Twin Peaks’ atmospheres find a cradle in Madlib’s lax lope. The band’s sound and response to the dubstep moment is very much their own. Sceneless and untethered from etiquette and genre codes, ‘Crooks & Lovers’ floats through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect.

Dj Silkie And Anti Social Ent. as a collective are definitely ones to watch in 2009/2010 ‘step aside’ is a clever combination of hard hitting bass and breaks with the synthy, melodic and soulful elements as expected from this producer – dark and moody with a jazzy twist. this track drops into what can only be described as low end sub bass over a tribal beat pattern which is enough to shake up any dancefloor – a real stomper ‘illegal immigrant’ comes with similar vibes on the b side, starting off with emotive, dubesque pads and dropping with low down sub stabs over another unconventional but highly effective beat. this represents the other side to the anti social sound which can only be described of as the liquid/deeper dubstep sound. both tracks have had support on the highly acclaimed rinse fm on a weekly basis (www.rinse.fm) and are receiving heavy rotation from djs such as Skream, Mala And N-type in the clubs and not to mention major dubstep icons such as Hatcha from kiss 100 and Maryanne Hobbs from radio 1, this highlights the versatility of these tracks and the potential to cross into dj sets from different genres – a real must for all serious dubsteppers worldwide.

Few artists nowadays can claim true originality in the music they make; artists who have their own unique sound. You can easily spot a DJ Premier break, an M.I.A. chant, or a Timbaland beat, because these are the artists who have etched out their own niche in the musical forum. These people push the envelope with their production, keeping things fresh, exciting and interesting for us lowly listeners. Steve Spacek is one of these people.
Steve White forged his music career in the early 90’s with the dance act Stex, which also featured Johnny Marr of The Smiths. He went on to found the band Spacek in the mid-90s, and quickly found underground success. Their first release, “Eve”, gained favour with many respected people in the industry, resulting in them signing to Mos Def’s GoodTree imprint and Island Records in the UK. The late J Dilla offerered up remix duties on a package that included contributions from the Roots’ Black Thought, Frank n Dank and Mos Def himself. Their debut album, “Curvatia”, was critically acclaimed, and displayed the group’s complex and challenging sensibilities, establishing them as a promising new talent in the British alternative music scene. “Vintage Hi-Tech” followed in 2003, drawing high praise from critics who called it “a downtempo musical masterpiece that draws no comparison”, and they were heralded by Style magazine as “the Radiohead of soul”.
“Black Pocket The Album” is instrumental soul at its best, an exploration into grooves and the spaces within. Over the series, Black Pocket has shown the diversity that’s possible within the soul genre, and this album pulls all those possibilities together. Every track on here shows a producer who is totally in control of his sonic surroundings: a myriad of splices and lush quirks which – like a jigsaw – resolve themselves to reveal the beauty of the whole. “Black Pocket” is an album which blows away all the usual clichés found in
the music behind soul and brings to you a future full of potential and promise.
Steve Spacek, the acclaimed voice behind the ground-breaking genre-pushing group Spacek (who were championed by everyone from Entertainment Weekly to Mos Def), made a name for himself at the turn of the century with the song “Eve’ (covered by Dwele). The song set off a worldwide buzz on Steve as a singer and his group’s futuristic sound. Imagine a robot performer in the future, in love with hip hop beatology and skillful enough to twist it into new shapes, programmed with an infused knowledge of the biographies of Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and Leroy Hutson as source material for lyric writing and you might have an idea of the Spacek sound – Robotic, futuristic, hip-hop based soul. Steve Spacek has also worked with Mark Pritchard on his recent Harmonic 313 album, or their joint 12″ on Warp this year under the alias Africa Hi Tech. His back catalogue, includes labels like Giles Petersons Brownswood, BBE, and more recently he had a Blackpocket release on Fat City which had a Martyn Remix.

Adding a percussive and experimental edge to the current class of post-dubstep pioneers, Mount Kimbie, the duo of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos – are set to release their highly anticipated debut album ‘Crooks & Lovers’ on Scuba’s Hotflush label in July. Mount Kimbie’s first two EPs – ‘Maybes’ and ‘Sketch On Glass’ – seemed like explorations of spaces so private that all within earshot were instantly turned into voyeurs. The experience was less like listening to music and more like eavesdropping on the machinations of a lone mind – albeit a lone mind surrounded by and retreating from millions of other minds. Difficult to categorise, the lush EPs caused a commotion when released last year with ‘Sketch On Glass’ recently undergoing reworks from the likes of Faulty DL, SCB (Scuba’s darker techno alias) and their sometime collaborator James Blake. With their own remixes (Foals and The xx) becoming hot property, Mount Kimbie have been a core part of the growing scene in London often associated with labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio. Dom and Kai met whilst at Southbank University, pushed together in a student halls that was previously a mental asylum – where the ceilings were still ridiculously high to stop patients hanging themselves: “a cold, joyless, concrete building – the sort of building where you’d drop a pen and the sound would just go on and on in an echo.” Armed with found sound snips and a siege mentality, Kai and Dom set about turning London’s ambience into rhythm, its chaos into coherence. Traces of influence remain – the hard-earned spaces of Burial and The Bug vie with the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu and Grouper’s sad-eyed glow, D’Angelo’s pervert soul gets cleansed in the intimacy of Phil Elvrum’s Microphones, Angelo Badalamenti’s swollen ‘Twin Peaks’ atmospheres find a cradle in Madlib’s lax lope. The band’s sound and response to the dubstep moment is very much their own. Sceneless and untethered from etiquette and genre codes, ‘Crooks & Lovers’ floats through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect.

(martyn, efdemin, mathew jonson rmxs) the latest in a series of remix 12-inches from Tiga’s 2009 album Ciao!, featuring some of the most respected and sought-after producers in dance music taking on the most respected icon in dance musi When a song means a lot to you personally, having it remixed is a lot like sending your child to undergo plastic surgery. In this case, though, it was like having the operation performed by doctors you respect as musicians. This is most likely my favorite track off Ciao!, and the response I’ve gotten from fans seems to suggest I’m not alone. They come up to me and say, “Tiga, that was an amazing game of racquetball, but the real reason I’m here is to tell you how much “Gentle Giant” means to me.” And it’s not uncommon for my sports goggles to fill up with salty blue Gatorade tears, mainly because I thought we had been playing squash. Some may claim that the remixes on this release are too diverse, that they strain the acceptable boundaries of what’s eclectic and what’s too hectic to sex with. And to that I say, “You can’t shame the Rebel, dog. You can’t even try.”

There was once a time in drum & bass where to try your hand at other genres was practically an insult to the staunch elitism of the genre. Drum & bass knew best, and what it knew most preciously of all was to soak up outside influences like a sponge, then regurgitate them in its own 170-ish-bpm breakbeat style – with an added middle finger to anyone who dared question the futurethinking outlook of the protagonists involved.
Now, more than a decade since artists like Ed Rush & Optical, Source Direct and Matrix were hailed as the sonic beat scientists of the millennium, it’s become trendy to mash together a whole bunch of genres and styles all under one artist alias roof. Chase & Status made dubstep and drum & bass spiritual and literal
dancefloor partners in just a few swift moves and Sub Focus turned his hand to bassline house alongside classic jungle and technoelectro infused D&B on his recent self-titled debut album. Meanwhile Annie Mac has practically made an institution amongst dance music fans by splicing together all styles with a common theme – incredible, filthy basslines and a cheeky attitude. But amongst all the multi-genre mashing and the come-and-go tunes of the day, it can be hard to pick out something which has a shelf life longer than the next epileptic bassline to quake the local dancefloor or the latest remix from a moribund LFO maniac, slowly descending into blog house madness. However, into that void steps a producer with a history for sticking to his aesthetic guns; a producer who’s not afraid to touch the other side of the genre explosion; a producer who arrives at the party armed with a suitcase full of subtlety and an outlook more akin to the artists of old. Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook dlives deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. dancefloor partners in just a few swift moves and Sub Focus turned his hand to bassline house alongside classic jungle and technoelectro infused D&B on his recent self-titled debut album. Meanwhile Annie Mac has practically made an institution amongst dance music fans by splicing together all styles with a common theme – incredible, filthy basslines and a cheeky attitude. But amongst all the multi-genre mashing and the come-and-go tunes of the day, it can be hard to pick out something which has a shelf life longer than the next epileptic bassline to quake the local dancefloor or the latest remix from a moribund LFO maniac, slowly descending into blog house madness. However, into that void steps a producer with a history for sticking to his aesthetic guns; a producer who’s not afraid to touch the other side of the genre explosion; a producer who arrives at the party armed with a suitcase full of subtlety and an outlook more akin to the artists of old. Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook dlives deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Finish copies. Subtle Audio makes it’s return to the vinyl fold with this brand new 3 tracker by Austria’s Sub. Living at high altitude in his native land, it comes as no surprise that these tracks exude an icy sound. “Tensions” is a beautifully delicate piece of D&B. Sharp snares, hi-hats and drifting atmospheres are underpinned by a sub-zero bass sound. Suddenly the beats thicken and become twisted and glitchy. It’s almost as if a frozen lake you were standing on is beginning to crack and give way! “Halleluja” is on the half-speed tip and will not even sound like D&B to most. Choir voices are interrupted by a stepping beat and a shuddering, dirty bassline, offset by a world of icey atmospherics, echoes and feedback. This sound is truly from another planet. “Hydra” is something a little different for Subtle Audio – clocking in at 120bpm but it certainly doesn’t sound like house or techno! It’s a nicely mellow track with a lurching, jerky beat that is filtered and reversed but always rhythmical. Dark Rhodes keys and then a bright piano line ensure a nice variance of mood in this beautifully balanced piece.

MEDI024 Protecting Hands Remixes – Clouds Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Following on from the highly acclaimed original productions ‘Protecting Hands (Parts 1 and 2)’ released mid-2009 on DEEP MEDi Musik, Clouds have enlisted Berkane Sol’s label owner Geiom and experimental electronic minimalists Isan to dissect and rebuild. Kamal Joory AKA Geiom has been busy producing since the late 90’s pushing the downtempo and ambient sounds of IDM and merging them with his love of raw grime and garage instrumentals. In 2006 Geiom started the ever-reliable Berkane Sol imprint releasing his own work (most notable the stunning ‘Reminssin’ featuring Marita) but also giving Brackles and Shortstuff their first outing on wax. Geiom’s remix of ‘Protecting Hands’ sketches out a dreamy, beautiful half-step approach with his love of electronica clearly coming heavily in to play, complimenting the original ghostly vocal perfectly. One of his best productions we think? Isan have been making minimalistic electronics since the mid 90’s with killer releases on Morr Music and Static Craven. Clouds are clearly fans of their work and this comes across in their remix as they dissect the original and create a blissful, beatless journey, permitting the sound to develop organically, with their intuitive grasp of melody and their intelligent manipulation of sound dictating its direction.

Two collaborative tracks from Quarta 330 and LV, made when the pair met the day after Hyperdub’s fifth anniversary party in November last year. These tunes exemplify the kind of meeting of minds where the best of both procucers comes to the surface, as Quarta 330’s 8-bit abstraction and melodic sense contrasts nicely with LV’s characteristic lush figures and shuffling rhythms. ‘Hylo’ finds 8-bit melodies made from rebuilt Gameboys and sonar-like bleeps weaved into the crunchy snap of a reverse drum beat and warm chords, breaking down into a sonorous motif before stepping up the pace once more. It’s an energetic mix of brittle and lush sounds. On the AA side, ‘Suzuran’ is a joint remix of Quarta 330’s own remix of Japanese chiptunes artists Dong. LV places the slurring space pop of the Japanese vocoder vocal melody inside a remix constructed from syncopated drums and offkey bleeping patterns. The results are catchy and alien, as melodic sweetness is juxstaposed with the tension of the setting.

Mizzy’s debut 12” on DEEP MEDi Musik showcases both her versatility and a lightness of touch that belies her years. ‘My World’ marries sloping half-step drums, offhand tom rolls and cleverly constructed synth work, conjuring a wickedly melodious groove. On the flip, ‘The Jester’ zips off in a different direction, carried by tougher, stripped-back drums and myriad 8-bit Gameboy bleeps, zaps and bumps. An altogether clubbier affair, but no less sophisticated, fans of Gemmy and Joker will undoubtedly approve.

Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best Listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

INMD005 Battlecat / Grapefruit – Donnie Dubson Influenza Media 12″ Vinyl
Germany has seen the evolution of many successful labels and artists over time, including (The) Panacea, Current Value, Twintone and Blu Saphir Recordings. But more recently, Digital Colours and Fokuz LTD artist, Donnie Dubson has stepped into the fray, joining the roster of immaculate talent on one of Belgium’s most well-known chill-out labels, Influenza Media. Coming a long way from his first release on Have-A-Break Recordings in 2006, Donnie’s masterful production has landed him spots on compilations and podcasts by the likes of Phunkfiction Recordings, Hospital Records and Knowledge Magazine, while collaborating with such artists as Stunna and Andy Sim. The fifth instalment on Influenza Media features two very different but “feel good” pieces. Battlecat is lush with its’ subtle, warm bass lines, while Grapefruit pummels forward with its’ bass-heavy kicks and sweeping pad melodies. If I were to speak to Donnie myself, I’d be the first to comment on his magnificent arrangement of the breakdown on both tunes. The halftime break in Grapefruit is very welcoming, and it really does a great job working its’ way towards the dance floor for the second drop. Battlecat uses a more traditional technique, using bass stabs to push the second drop into full throttle.

FOURWARD is one of the hottest and most sought after new producer collective around at the moment. Their first digital releases on Subsonik Sound were all regulars at Beatport Top 10 sales chart for weeks, competing with established artists´ tracks by Chase&Status and Noisia. BODY&SOUL and FOURWARD decided to join forces just recently and the feedback on their work so far couldn’t prove any more, that this was an excellent decision. IBR003 Hard Boogie For Dub Swingers EP (Part Two) – Relocate Iberian 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The new release from Lisbon/Barcelona based Iberian Records sees the second part of Relocate’s “Hard Boogie For Dub Swingers EP” hit wax. First up are Lisbon’s Kuduro warriors Buraka Som Sistema with a remix of Relocate’s “Dot Dot Dash”. Clever micro samples from the original rub are married to an absolutely slamming b-line to create a full on floor-filler full of original flava which very successfully merges UK bass to the Portuguese sound. On the flip we have “Origins” from Relocate; which sees their unique stripped down sub-heavy bassline boogie to full effect. Relocate come up trumps once again with a full on roller of a track with trademark gliding bass dives and punchy stabs from a classic sidestepper Zed Bias sample and a very much house meets dubstep type of vibe. Dub Police drop an absolute peach of a single here from Birmingham’s ever rising star Emalkay. Carefully staying true to the original and not interfering with its initial blast, this version tweaks it just enough to bring you back to that point when this tune first dropped and you couldn’t play it enough. Face gets Splat embodies trademark Stagga production with the lyrical talents of Y Dot Tzer J Bone getting into a metaphorical battle with other MCs. ATM001 Mako EP – Ital Tek Atom River 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Ital Tek (Alan Myson) is back with his second release of 2009: Mako EP, proving again that he is carving his own sound within the spectrum of bass music. His busy international touring schedule and releases on the infamous Planet Mu label have cemented his reputation as one of the most inventive producers working under the Dubstep banner today. Following on from 2008’s acclaimed album Cyclical and 2009’s Massive Error this is the debut release for his own imprint Atom River. Over 4 tracks it sees Ital Tek once again perfectly bridging the gap between Dubstep, Techno and Electronica whilst retaining strong dance floor energy. Mako opens the record with one of Ital Tek’s warmest and thickest sounding tunes to date. Driving fuzz bass and a searing twisted lead push the track onwards over a bed of glorious chord progressions. Chemical Temple stomps in with a lurching half step rhythm and thick cutting synth lines before breaking down in a pulsating double time bass driven mesh of tight flickering percussion and distant ghostly melodies breaking through into the foreground. Manhattan sets things off with a bang on the B side. Sharp cold metallic breaks drop into a heavy driving bass throb. The drums cut through the track with shattering precision allowing the bass to whip out the solid rhythm, whilst again complimenting Ital Tek’s knack for melody. Topaz closes the record with a hard hitting Techno – Dubstep crossover. Pounding kicks and crisp percussion swell over the course of 5 minutes into a crescendo of swirling synths before dropping finally into an epic rinse out. This record once again shows Ital Tek’s ability to bring both heaviness and beauty to music that is as equally suited in a club as it is sound tracking a late night drive.

Well my good man, this can only be the next release from Blunt Force Trauma! This double dose of ska-lounge-cum-ragga-get-down is a most handsome successor to BFT’s first release. Lord Cry Cry aka Berlin- based Chris Donaghue pours every inch of his classically-trained ear for detail into this lovingly produced re-working of One Step Beyond, twinned with the rude Raw F*ck. Sweet-talking your backslide into a strange grooving action, this pair of beauties has slapped a large and toothsome grin in the face of every listener, including the likes of DJ Food, Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts) and Jon Kennedy. Artwork here is obsessively overseen by BFT with a cover shot by New York’s Anthony Saint James (www.anthonysaintjames.com – worth a visit for the celeb-spotting!) and a tattoo by British illustrator Inkymole, on a sleeve which opens into an 11″x16″ poster. About Lord Cry Cry: After working in a steel mill and disregarding encouragement to become a Woolworths manager Lord Cry Cry, born Chris Donaghue, studied Law at Oxford University then Clinical Psychology. He worked as a psychologist in Kent then moved to Berlin to write a novel, join a band, build a snowman, schlep coal, and collect bottles. Just because he could. He completed a Masters degree in sound design and classical music composition in Berlin this year. This is his first solo vinyl release, after providing many a musical piece for various short European films.

White Label, Black sleeve. One of the most exciting record on these pages this week comes from London’s Bok Bok, offering up two refixes of Crazy Cousins ‘Bongo Jam’ and Dre Skull’s ‘I Want You’. The cliche “One to watch” was made for this fella, from his potent mixtapes mashing grime, house, garage and UK Bass, to his forthcoming tracks for Dress 2 $weat, Bok Bok is dangerously onto something. On the A-side we’ve got a refit of Dre Skull’s club anthem ‘I Want You’, engaging with elements of tougher NYC and Chicago house and locked into heavyweight UKF bass with a proper bashment fired flavour. On the flipside he rewires Crazy Cousins’ infectious ‘Bongo Jam’ with a superbly tempered blend of dirty chromed synth timbres and cool rushing snare rolls executed with a knowing restraint, built to tease the dancefloor. Vice Welcome to the Sprawl’s Red Light District, where anything can be bought… Lush chords and vocal stabs introduce Vice, whilst a broken and staggered beat provides the rhythm. An sleazy vibe is brought forth from the arrangement, which builds to it’s dramatic drop, with a huge bassline, that folds around the beat perfectly. The 2nd half of the track takes on a more musical approach, with lush synth tones providing a stunning melody to finish the track.
The Sprawl The dome towered over them, protecting them from the harmful rays that the Ozone layer could no longer shelter them from. Their sun was not one of gold, but of grey… Sinister ambience creeps towards you from the speaker as a heavy stepping beat provides the pace through The Spawl. Distant cries and the buzz of machinery mingle amongst each other, whilst drones buzz overhead. Dramatic effects break the beat apart before the breakdown, where a menacing bass enters the fray. Percussion hits, fragments of breaks and strange fx keep things moving throughout the track, with a distinct change in the second section keeping the listener interested till the end.
The Enemy Within Pain streaked through his body as the virus began to eat away at his cybernetics. Time was running out. Twisted and abstract, The Enemy Within is driven by it’s disgusting synth line and strange glitch beat. Technical yet restrained, it’s hypnotic patterns draw you into it’s midst, whilst bell like tones provide an ominous atmosphere. Hissing bitcrushed ride cymbals pick up the pace, whilst a distorted midtone provides the response to bass.
Antenna They fear the visionary experience, for you have to go through a kind of death to experience it… Featuring Cell and clocking in at 140 bpm, Antenna is mostly ambient in it’s approach until the later sections, where a huge thumping and distorted drum line is matched with a massive 808 bass section. Space like pads and synths and matched by strange whirring sounds, whilst distorted tones glitch in and out of it’s audio landscape. Fragments of radio messages can be heard, metaphysical messages that echo out of the speaker into your mind. A totally unique and abstract approach.

Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

Germany has seen the evolution of many successful labels and artists over time, including (The) Panacea, Current Value, Twintone and Blu Saphir Recordings. But more recently, Digital Colours and Fokuz LTD artist, Donnie Dubson has stepped into the fray, joining the roster of immaculate talent on one of Belgium’s most well-known chill-out labels, Influenza Media. Coming a long way from his first release on Have-A-Break Recordings in 2006, Donnie’s masterful production has landed him spots on compilations and podcasts by the likes of Phunkfiction Recordings, Hospital Records and Knowledge Magazine, while collaborating with such artists as Stunna and Andy Sim. The fifth instalment on Influenza Media features two very different but “feel good” pieces. Battlecat is lush with its’ subtle, warm bass lines, while Grapefruit pummels forward with its’ bass-heavy kicks and sweeping pad melodies. If I were to speak to Donnie myself, I’d be the first to comment on his magnificent arrangement of the breakdown on both tunes. The halftime break in Grapefruit is very welcoming, and it really does a great job working its’ way towards the dance floor for the second drop. Battlecat uses a more traditional technique, using bass stabs to push the second drop into full throttle.

DRUNKCD001 Good Energy (A Singles Collection) – RSD Punch Drunk Records CD
RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music stalwart Rob Smith (one half of respected production duo Smith and Mighty), has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for more than two decades. He remains firmly at the forefront of Bristol’s endlessly inventive music scene, with a staggering discography and a range of projects encompassing dub, jungle, 2-step and dubstep, From his musical beginnings playing guitar in local roots reggae band Restriction, Rob’s music has always had a strong dub aesthetic. Forming the, now legendary, production duo Smith and Mighty with collaborator Ray Mighty in 1987, the pair’s early releases on the Three Stripe label were influential in laying the groundwork for both the trip hop and jungle scenes for which Bristol would become renowned. A period of chart success and major label involvement in the early nineties was followed by a return to their underground roots for Smith and Mighty. During this time Rob also worked with Peter D. Rose to release groundbreaking music on their More Rockers imprint. Rob Smith also went on to collaborate with local roots reggae producers Henry & Louis. This fruitful relationship culminated in 2001 with the release of the fantastic ‘Time Will Tell’ LP. More recently, Rob Smith has found a new home as RSD, comfortably adapting to the rolling, sub- heavy rhythms of dubstep. With releases on internationally respected labels such as Punch Drunk, Tectonic and Earwax, RSD’s sound is typified by impossibly heavy soundsystemtesting sub-lines and junglist dub breaks. The irresistible energy of tunes such as 2007′s infectious junglist roller “Pretty Bright Lights” and 2008′s speaker destroying dread-fuelled steppers “Over It” & “Jah Way” has rapidly cemented them as anthems. This Punch Drunk CD collection compiles tracks from many of the 12”s released in the past two years under the RSD moniker.

Absolute madness from Immerse here, as October is released from his minimal techno day-centre to wreak havoc amongst the dubsteppers.‘Elephants’ is a pretty appropriate name for the A, as bongo loops and ominuous machine noises are summarily flattened by the phasing bass crunch and trumpeting midrange. Add a dash of running breakbeat to the mix and you have a strange yet effective dancefloor worrier. Flipside, ‘Medium’ opts for broken techno stylings, simmering pads and clattering percussion setting the scene for the tense main event. 8/10 [recommended] Review By Diccon c/o IDJMagazine.

DP030 King Pin – The Others Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police churn out yet another stonking release from label veterans The Others. Kicking off the single is the almighty ‘Kingpin’, which has been battered by the likes of Caspa, Skream, N-Type and The Scratch Perverts. With an intro full of suspense and a drop that packs one serious punch, this is a track guaranteed to bring any dance floor to submission, absolutely heavyweight! Things couldn’t be more different on the flip as The Others show their soulful side with the beautiful ‘Splinter In My Soul’, which has been kept ultra exclusive until full release! Soft melodies and warm bass with a ‘Soul:R’ esq vibes, not your usual from these boys but a stunning piece of music none the less. In a nutshell this release has it all, quality stuff from the DP camp once again.

DP031 The Future – Trolley Snatcha Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police yet again show their aim of bringing through new talent with the first single of newbie Trolley Snatcha. And don’t be fooled by the name, this kid doesn’t hang around Asda nicking trolley’s all day, instead he produces some seriously big tunes! Kicking things off is the brutal sounds of ‘The Future’, with the dubplate battering stamp of approval from the likes of Caspa, The Others, N-Type and co. A quite unsuspecting intro before one serious kick in the knackers of bassline pressure, this one is straight up murderation on any dance floor! The flip sees the slightly more upbeat ‘Scattah’, which once again is not for the faint hearted and found its way in to the sets of Skream and the usual big hitters of dubstep royalty. Gritty, dark and relentless bass with pounding beats are the order of the day, making this a tough debut 12” from this young bass jedi.

HF023 Sketch On Glass – Mount Kimbie Hotflush Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Mount Kimbie have carved out another superb foursome for Hotflush, and once again the music is just as comfortable in the hiphop or electronica realm as it is dubstep. Folksy melodies and ducking piped synths swoop over garage cheek and serrated bass in opener ‘Sketch On Glass’, before ‘Serged’ takes us deeper and darker with its anti-quantised beats, spring reverb drips and surgically-altered vocals. Flipside, an epic sonic vista in ’50 Mile View’ makes way for delicate instrumental RnB before the introverted 2-step bleep of ‘At Least’. (Words C/O diccon IDJ Mag Issue 116)

First up are Lisbon’s Kuduro warriors Buraka Som Sistema with a remix of Relocate’s “Dot Dot Dash”. Clever micro samples from the original rub are married to an absolutely slamming b-line to create a full on floor-filler full of original flava which very successfully merges UK bass to the Portuguese sound. On the flip we have “Origins” from Relocate; which sees their unique stripped down sub-heavy bassline boogie to full effect. Relocate come up trumps once again with a full on roller of a track with trademark gliding bass dives and punchy stabs from a classic sidestepper Zed Bias sample and a very much house meets dubstep type of vibe. Because of this, RDA could be easily dubbed as the meister of melancholic electronic party music. Or “blue funk” as the exact term should be in my opinion. Take my word and dive in to the sea of emotions provided by RDA’s new album “Guilty Feet, No Rhythm”. I promise You confusion. Take a journey through the depressing digital funk of “No Heaven” or reach for the joyous synthesizer excursions of “W.A.S.P.” or “Go, Rangers, Go!”.And don’t forget to boogaloo to the epic title track which sounds like Timbaland and Björn Ulvaeus had a son. Because, in the end RDA’s music is like life itself: Gloomy, mournful, slow, but oh so funky!
