STHoldings: End of year review 2011

Posted 21 December 2011 | By | Categories: news, reviews, tracks, video | No Comments

So that’s another year almost done and with it come the inevitable top this, top that lists. Here are details of how  STHoldings distributed labels/artists featured in the end of year lists from around the web.

RA Poll: Top 50 tracks of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1422

46. Maurice Donovan - Babeh [SSSSS]
The man formerly known as Ramadan cuts up a classic into something resembling house.

22. Peverelist - Dance Til the Police Come [Hessle Audio]
Jungle-inspired-swinging post-dubstep—or in other words, a Bristol-based genius at the top of his game.

19. Scuba - Adrenalin [Hotflush]
A lot of 2011′s big tracks inspired as much bickering as they did dancefloor mayhem, and Scuba’s only single under his usual moniker was no different. Following in his new, looser, and housier direction, “Adrenalin” is eight minutes of rigid repetition, incessantly catchy basslines and a strobing vocal sample. But the song’s lopsided progression is the important part, because three minutes in it melts away into one of the year’s most decadent breakdowns, several minutes of building synth washes and whooshes that unashamedly ascend to the highest of the gurning trance heavens. The song’s title might imply a certain energy, but we all know there’s a different chemical driving this one.

17. Pangaea - Hex [Hemlock]
Pangaea’s “Hex” was perfectly fine for the first 86 seconds. Pretty swell even. A bit of rhythmic trickery, a nice organic bed for it all to sit on. Then there was this: “Buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh kut buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh kut be booooooooooooy be boooooOOOOOOOoy.” It was at that moment that “Hex” became one of the most exciting songs we’d heard all year. That Kevin McAuley had further tricks up his sleeve later on is icing on the cake of course, but it’s also why we kept coming back to it throughout the year.

10. Unknown Artist - Sicko Cell [Swamp 81]
Be honest: When you finally heard “Sicko Cell” in full, you were a little bit underwhelmed. (If you even bothered to track it down at all.) There’s not much to say about the rhythm. There’s hardly a drop. Even the melody—if you can call the atmospheres a full-fledged melody—don’t inspire much poetry. There is a vocal, though. Perhaps you remember? It’s the one about cocaine powder. The one that drove you mad in a club this year trying to figure out where it was from. The one that Loefah, Oneman and others couldn’t stop playing. The one that landed this tune in our top 10 tracks of the year.

01. Blawan - Getting Me Down [White Label]
The whole story behind “Getting Me Down” is a bit corny really. I went out on New Years Eve—like everyone else does, and I did the whole thing, had a good time, left quite early and came back home and kind of just sat at my computer all night/morning. I had these disco loops I had been working on that I wasn’t really doing much with, and I started messing around with the a cappella and then something just clicked. I did it in about four hours and kind of forgot about it.
This one dropped off the radar for me a little bit, because I actually thought it was one of the weirder things I had written. I never really grasped the catchy vocal properly until I put it into context. A few guys said, “Yeah, I really like that tune,” but nothing more than anything else I sent before. The first person to get anything from me is usually Ben UFO. Ben gave it the first play on Rinse FM, and somebody then ripped it from the radio stream and uploaded it to YouTube—something that seems happen all the time now. That played an integral part of getting the tune in people’s heads really.
I’d been playing the tune out a lot, and it had got an OK reaction. I mean, I had always thought of it as filler for a set anyway. But once the YouTube clip was up, a lot of people in clubs knew what it was, even though it was only three or so weeks after I had finished making it. It’s really strange how things move so fast.

19. Instra:mental - Resolution 653 [NonPlus+]
The problem with Instra:mental? They release too much good music. “Problem” is the wrong word, but such has been the standard of Alex Green and Damon Kirkham’s output these past couple of years it’s become tough to ruminate on each new offering in isolation, fully appreciating the true extent of its merits. They’ve spoilt us, basically—and none more so than on their debut album, Resolution 653. Barely pausing for a fag break across its 13 tracks, the pair coaxed jaw-clenching amounts of warmth and grit out of their machines, coming off like the natural heirs to Drexciya’s electro throne.

RA Poll: Top 20 compilations of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1424

20. Various Artists - Mosaic Vol. 1 [Exit]
A lot of the tunes on Mosaic were earmarked as singles for Exit. But it became really clear that I wasn’t going to have the schedule to get everything out, so a compilation seemed like a good idea. In the same way as the [Autonomic] podcast, putting this music together served as a platform for people to get their heads around it. If the tracks are all in dribs and drabs it sort of goes unnoticed. I think compilations and the podcast kind of helped identify this group of artists producing this music. I suppose that’s where the title Autonomic came from. It’s funny that it became a genre name sort of, because that was never the intent.

14. Various Artists - Back & 4th [Hotflush]
I wasn’t directly involved in the process of choosing tracks for Back & 4th, but the goal was to present a gradual evolution of the label’s sound over the last few years. It was also an opportunity to bring in a few newcomers who provided a clear manifestation of that same evolution, with Roska, Boddika, dBridge, and FaltyDL adding their own flavors to the mix. I was also glad that Scuba picked up my own track, “Axis.” It’s the first one I made that I was really satisfied with. My favorite track on the compilation, though, was Boxcutter’s “LOADtime.” He’s always been really inspiring to me, as a veteran producer whose talent and skill really set him apart. – Incyde, Label Manager

BACK AND 4TH – Disc 1 by Hotflush

10. Various Artists - 116 & Rising  [Hessle Audio]
We had the idea for the compilation at the end of 2010 and started putting the wheels in motion soon after that. We approached some people we hadn’t worked with before as well as asking those we had if they were interested in the concept too. Luckily for us, everybody was. In terms of the name, the three of us were on the train coming back from our distributors after talking about the project, thinking of titles. I’d been re-listening to Experience by the Prodigy a week or two earlier and one of the tracks on there is called “Everybody in the Place (155 & Rising).” So 116 & Rising (referring to the BPM of the slowest track in the comp) is a bit of a joke, but at the same time summarises the project and a lot of what we’re about nicely.

RA Poll: Top 20 labels of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1421

20. NonPlus+
Nonplus+ heads Alex Green and Damon Kirkham simply claim to release what they like—no matter the genre. That’s what everyone says…until the distributor steps in. Luckily for us, Green and Kirkham didn’t get the memo, and spent the year reaffirming their pan-genre approach by putting Actress’ blurry electronica next to Lowtec’s tired house, and Boddika’s breezin’ electro up against the Neil Landstrumm and JD Twitch collab Salsa Apocalypso. Add Instra:mental’s own brutal and beautiful Resolution 653 to the mix, and you have yourself a wonderful and confusing year

19. Idle Hands
Saunter down Stokes Croft in Bristol with some cash in your pocket and you’ll likely end up trawling the racks of Idle Hands. The label of the same name was started up in 2009 while Chris Farrell was still employed a bit further up the street by the erstwhile Rooted Records. Much like the stock in both these stores, the label hasn’t been wedded to any one genre. In 2011 that’s meant an impeccable string of singles from artists like AnD, Kowton, Kevin McPhee, Szare and Outboxx which have run the gamut between charcoal techno and jazzy house.

05. Hotflush
With a hefty label compilation occupying the first quarter of the year and a busy 2010 behind him, it could have been a year of consolidation for Scuba’s Hotflush. Instead, the imprint pushed forward with new talents George FitzGerald, Braille) and old Paul Woolford & Psycatron). Looking over the names that released on Hotflush in retrospect, and things seem obvious. (Err… of course Sepalcure and Sigha go together!) But it speaks to the platform that Scuba has created that artists from house, techno and bass music even think to send him tracks—and that he finds a way to work all of them into his DJ sets.

94. Sepalcure “Pencil Pimp” [Hotflush]
As Sepalcure, Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma slid in right before the whistle to remind us that electronic music devices can do more than evocatively sputter and fritz. “Pencil Pimp” whirls on a machine-lathed spindle of Chicago footwork, capturing a feeling of curtailed tension and lurking danger with its soulful vocal clips and warm synth pads. There are no gestures of rebellion or subversion, only an argument for well-made music at a time when it might seem besieged. “Pencil Pimp” demonstrates why we feel so comfortable breaking the mold: We know someone will come along who feels passionate enough to cast it again, tempered even stronger. –Brian Howe

Sepalcure – Pencil Pimp / I’m Alright (album single) by Hotflush

86. Blawan “Getting Me Down” [self-released]
Blawan first drew attention with tracks that wielded wild drums like a toddler banging on household objects, but his most powerful moment this year came when he reined in those tendencies for a straightforward house thumper.  A lot of the impact in “Getting Me Down” comes fromthat Brandy vocal, squeezed and wedged into a galloping beat that recontextualizes the R&B slow-jam original as a sugary, hyped-up rush that’s dangerously contagious. Released discreetly after months of dubplate domination, the track’s landing was titanic: it was impossible to walk around record stores in London in May without hearing it blaring from speakers, or go to a club night without it being rinsed at least once. For the first half of the year, “Getting Me Down” was an event, and listening back to it at year’s end, it’s easy to see why. So few tracks combined candyfloss rave, UK garage hysteria, and dubby dread (check the growling basslines) into something that sounded so universal yet so subversive, helping to kick off a new impulse in the bass music world that was all about house. –Andrew Ryce

47. Sepalcure ‘Sepalcure’ [Hotflush]
In an interview with The Guardian last month, Hotflush boss Scuba named “Outside”, the closing song from bass music duo Sepalcure’s self-titled debut LP, as the song he would want to open his next DJ set with. It’s a strange choice for a set opener– “Outside” is beatless, essentially four minutes of drone and clipped voices– but then again, not much about Sepalcure makes sense in the constant forward-thinking climate of bass music circa 2011. As an album, it doesn’t really do anything new, and a few of the signifiers that Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma plunder onSepalcure were, to some, reaching their expiration dates– specifically, the use of pitched vocals that Stewart liberally splayed on his album this year as Machinedrum, Room(s). Part of what makes Sepalcure such a deeply enjoyable listen is how familiar it all is, pogoing between juke-derived textures, IDM’s click-clack machinery, misty pastoral ambience, and house music’s 4/4 insistence while weaving a web of shivering romance that still manages to move bodies. Above all else, Sepalcure offers a necessary reminder that, yeah, change is good, but elegant, refined perfection also has its place. –Larry Fitzmaurice

47: PAUL WOOLFORD & PSYCATRON ‘STOLEN’ (HOTFLUSH)
Almost five years on from ‘Erotic Discourse’, someone, somewhere did 2011 a massive favour and relit the fire under Paul Woolford’s arse, prompting the Leeds veteran to roll back the years and deliver some of his all-time best material. ‘Razor Blade’ and his remix of T. Williams and Terri Walker’s ‘Heartbeat’ were sublime, but this colossal collaboration with Psycatron on Hotflush simply took the biscuit.

Paul Woolford and Psycatron – Stolen [HFT018] by Hotflush

40: OLD APPARATUS SIDE A PART 1 (DEEP MEDI)
Old Apparatus’s mysterious debut – 20 minutes of music spread across two untitled sides of vinyl – is something we recommend enjoying as a whole, but there’s no doubt that the first distinct movement of the A-side packs the fiercest punch. It sounds like UK garage gone industrial, its perfectly swung rhythm riven by distortion and an overloaded darkside bassline. The end, it suggests, is very much nigh.

39: TEETH ‘SHAWTY’ (502 RECORDINGS)
Smoked-out drum machine pop from Helsinki’s TEETH that suited 502′s darkroom aesthetic (see also: Jay Weed, Fis-T) to a tee.

Oneman’s 502 Label: Teeth – Shawty/Shawty [FaltyDL Remix] 502003 by stholdings

24: KAHN ‘LIKE WE USED TO’ (PUNCH DRUNK)
Kahn’s beautifully crafted debut single bowled us over, with its vocals chopped into the syllables of pure energy and longing – “feminine pressure” writ large – and strapped to the most lithe and undeniable dubstep rhythm we heard all year.

Kahn ‘Like We Used To’ (Punch Drunk Records) by Punch Drunk Records

20: BLAWAN ‘GETTING ME DOWN’ (WHITE LABEL)
This year, Blawan expanded on the promise of his 2010 debut single ‘Fram’ to become one of the UK’s most in-demand, and refreshingly, heaviest producers, proving that you can still go hard in the paint without resorting to dubstep or electro-house cliches. He showed off his lighter touch, however, on this vinyl only edit of Brandy’s ‘Wanna Be Down’; it’s still his finest track to date.

17: PANGAEA ‘WON’T HURT’ (HESSLE AUDIO)
Pretty much everything Pangaea touches turns to gold, but nothing gleamed so bright in 2011 as ‘Won’t Hurt’ – a rude-as-all-fuck but masterfully honed onslaught of scything synths, choppy drums and outrageous sub-bass.

Won’t Hurt by pangaea

13: UNKNOWN ARTIST ‘SICKO CELL’ (SWAMP81)
I’m the information… co-caine powder. Say no more.

07: ROCKWELL ‘ARIA’ (CRITICAL AUDIO)
The most atmospheric, emotive and dynamic drum’n’bass track of the year, and an instant classic – wrought out of fierce, fanatically detailed drum programming, ghost-traces of This Mortal Coil’s ‘Song To The Siren’ and impeccably timed, gut-skewering bass stabs.

42: 2562 FEVER (WHEN IN DOUBT)
Fever is a concept album with a very simple but rigorous set of rules – every nuance and texture is half-inched from disco records produced from the mid 70’s to the early 80’s, with producer Dave Huismans’ own birth year of 1979 acting as a temporal pivot. The results don’t sound like disco at all – beyond a certain joyous, celebratory quality – but rather a new kind of dance music; dynamic, shapeshifting and irrepressible.

5. Hotflush
If you’re wondering why we think Hotflush is one of the best labels of the year, then you are not reading XLR8R enough. Let’s start with the obvious reasons: Sepalcure’s debut full-length topped Hotflush’s year off with a stunning display of dense post-dubstep, George FitzGerald dropped two more solid singles of R&B-infused garage, and label head Paul Rose (a.k.a. Scuba) unleashed one of 2011′s biggest tunes, “Adrenalin.” Meanwhile, Praveen Sharma of Sepalcure dropped four tracks of luscious, rolling garage with his A Meaning EP as Braille and Lando Kal stepped outside his usual role as the taller half of Lazer Sword long enough to deliver two of his most impressive solo cuts to date, “Further” and “Time Out.” Big, soulful tunes, consistently top-notch output, and a proven ability to not only shift within the ever-moving bass-music scene, but, more importantly, the power to influence it, made Hotflush a force yet again in 2011. Glenn Jackson

4. SWAMP81
Second acts can be hard to come by in electronic music, particularly in the lightning-quick environs of London’s hardcore continuum, but DMZ co-founder Loefah doesn’t seem to be having much of a problem with it. Since founding the SWAMP81 imprint in 2009, he’s quickly assembled a roster that functions as a sort of all-star team for upfront, low-end-heavy sounds. After serving up massive tunes like Addison Groove’s “Footcrab” and Ramadanman’s “Work Them” in 2010, the vinyl-only label stepped it up even further in 2011, dropping releases from FaltyDL, Zed Bias (both solo and as one-half of the Funkbias collaboration with Funk Butcher), and another single from Addison Groove. SWAMP81 was also home to records from Boddika—establishing him as a solo artist and one of the year’s biggest producers. Perhaps most notably, the label (eventually) released “Sicko Cell,” one of 2011′s most anticipated tunes. (The song may not have quite lived up to the hype, but it did snag the #13 slot on our countdown of the year’s best tracks.) Even as folks begin to wonder about the state of so-called bass music and attempt to figure out exactly where it’s heading, there appears to be no shortage of quality music coming from the SWAMP81 camp. Shawn Reynaldo

47. Boddika
 “2727″
 (SWAMP81)
Even in a year when Instra:mental, the duo he’s been a part of for more than a decade, released a widely acclaimed and sonically adventurous new album, the ascent of Boddika as a solo artist could not be stopped. Tracks like “2727″—with its thunderous drums, acid lines, and unapologetically raw aesthetic—are the reason why. Shawn Reynaldo

2727 by Boddika

46. French Fries
”Champagne”
(ClekClekBoom)
Legend has it that Claude VonStroke wanted to sign “Champagne” to his Dirtybird label, but young French producer French Fries politely declined and kept the tune for his own ClekClekBoom imprint. True or not, it’s quite the story, not that this tune, which uses white space as effectively as it employs snappy drums and eerie synths, needed much help finding its way into DJs’ playlists. Shawn Reynaldo

French Fries – Champagne / Hugz ft. Bambounou [CCB001] – Out Now! (12″ Ltd Ed Vinyl) by ClekClekBoom

44. Sepalcure
”Pencil Pimp”
(Hotflush)
Sepalcure seems to compose bass music on the most loose, yet subtle terms, and the pair’s unique perspective on the genre has continued to yield stellar results. Somehow both tribal and smooth in the same breath, “Pencil Pimp” immediately stood out during the course of the duo’s debut LP, mostly due to the sheer weight infused into its post-happy sound—think Mount Kimbie with slightly bigger balls (and maybe some more drugs in the mix). Glenn Jackson

43. Blawan
”Getting Me Down”
Sampling generously from Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down” is kind of a no-brainer (whether or not you’re willing to admit it, we all loved that song), but Blawan did much more than simply edit Brandy’s half-forgotten hit—he propelled it into the club of some distant planet with monstrous percussion and whatever the hell that reverse low-end sound is. Wherever it comes from, it’s strange, unnerving, and just about perfect. Glenn Jackson

26. Instra:Mental
 “When I Dip”
 (NonPlus)
2011 found veteran UK duo Instra:mental completing a very large left turn, essentially abandoning drum & bass for old-school electro, heavy low-end, and lots of 808 drum sounds. Ahead of the acclaimed Resolution 653, the pair dropped “When I Dip,” an undeniable tune that also folds some Southern-style booty bass into the outfit’s new sonic formula. It proved to be quite the effective opening salvo, both for Instra:mental’s re-emergence and Boddika’s big year as a solo artist. Shawn Reynaldo

Instra:mental Resolution 653 LP Sampler ‘Thomp’ / ‘When I Dip’ [NONPLUS013] by stholdings

24. Julio Bashmore
 “Ribble to Amazon”
(3024)
There’s a line somewhere between soulful, UK-style house and anthemic, almost cheesy, bangers that can be dangerous. However, when walked just right, that line is perfect for the dancefloor. Julio Bashmore knows exactly how to walk it, and “Ribble to Amazon” is one of his finest journeys on that limb—the pads are warm, the vocals are just right, and those breakdowns are too good to be true. Glenn Jackson

JULIO BASHMORE RIBBLE TO AMAZON (3024-011B) by 3024world

18. Teeth
”Shawty”
 (502)
Like many selections on Oneman’s 502 imprint, there’s not a whole lot to “Shawty.” Listening to the song, it quickly becomes apparent just how much space there is in the production, a factor that’s just as important as any of the actual sonic elements being put to use. That said, each of those elements is just about perfect. Utilizing low-slung drum beats, haunting synth melodies, and a sultry vocal sample, Finnish producer Teeth not only put himself on the bass-music map, he also created one of the year’s most memorable tunes. Shawn Reynaldo

13. Unknown
”Sicko Cell”
 (SWAMP81)
It’s amazing that when “Sicko Cell”—undoubtedly the most hyped tune of the year—was finally released in late July, the world was essentially already over it. In a world where anticipation grows exponentially online and DJs are mastering YouTube rips in order to play the latest tune, especially one created “anonymously” (it’s an open secret that Joy Orbison produced the track) and only passed along to a select few, “Sicko Cell” simply ran out of steam. Nevertheless, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a monster of a club track. With a stripped-down aesthetic and eerie vibe, the song is rather similar to Teeth’s “Shawty,” but the twisted, Burial-esque vocal samples put “Sicko Cell” over the top. Shawn Reynaldo

3. Scuba
 “Adrenalin”
 (Hotflush)
Scuba made a trance song. (Polite company might refer to it as progressive house, but we’re going to call a spade a spade.) On the heels of “Loss,” which he released earlier in the earlier under his SCB moniker (and already nabbed #41 on this list), it was apparent that Paul Rose was interested in exploring new sound palettes, but something this, well, epic was not really expected. While the notion of one of the most influential and boundary-pushing dubstep producers of the past decade making a tune that Sasha would play (yes, that happened) sounds like some kind of nightmare on the surface, it doesn’t change the fact that “Adrenalin” is not only an excellent track, but also a production that completely resets exactly what it is that Scuba is all about. Containing one grandiose and ethereal breakdown—not to mention a series of smaller ups and downs along the way—”Adrenalin” certainly plays to the dancefloor, particularly dancers looking to lose their shit once the beat comes back in and the song’s chunky bassline takes hold. The synths are washy and warm, the sounds employed are impeccably clean, and yes, the track is absolutely, undeniably a bit cheesy. It’s also eight of the most enjoyable minutes of music we heard all year (more or less on repeat, to be honest), and we can’t wait to hear what Scuba comes up with next. Shawn Reynaldo

New D&B Releases

EXIT025 – Various Artists – Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 1 – 12″ Vinyl
Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 1. With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles. As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. This album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today. Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

CRIT051 – Rockwell – Aria EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Rockwell’s rise to prominence as a rare, distinctive talent has been exciting the electronica music circuit the world over. Critical, thankfully, being the trusty forefront for all things audio-aesthetically delicious, presents the ‘Aria EP’ – 4 tracks of sound sublime, exemplifying Rockwell’s refreshing angle on energy in the club combined with the characteristic, meticulously playful technicals, precise and thrilling as ever. The charmingly rustic intro of ‘Aria’ unleashes striking Flinstones-esque wooden triplets, scaling the track as stirring vocals weave through; haunting and uplifting at once, the title-track exudes sheer class. Slightly more buoyant, ‘Live For The Moment’ infuses an energetic tempo with profusions of ear-carressing funk and those ever-characteristic percussive twists – naughty all over. Swiftly plunged into apocalyptic darkness, the Ulterior Motive boys take a sinister liking to ‘Noir’. Distinctly menacing and genuinely frightening, what better to bully the atmosphere than Hell-raising bass and staccato violins. Listen out for the breakdown bass – horrific and enriching, this track is dark by Devil’s definition. Icing on the cake collaboration with underground legend Untold comes in the form of ‘Rehoku Sunrise’, a tribal earthy worldly masterpiece of running drums and raw, wild samples, glazing the soul in bliss. Bellissimo.

TRIPS004 – Silent Witness – Brainedrain / Frozen Still – 12″ Vinyl
A. Silent Witness – Brainedrain opens up with an uplifting sound scape of lush chords, tight beats, and bass growls that rises up to a devastating drop of titan like proportions. Drums and bass dance with each other along the way, taking in turn-around tripwires and reverb bombs. It eventually settles with a break down consisting of twisted pitch drops and euphoric anticipation. The second drop then kicks in with a different twist on the bass frenzy witnessed earlier. Simply Disgusting. AA. Silent Witness – Frozen Still still harks back to the vibes of jungle with an eerie wash amidst classic stabs and vocal snippets. This sound is updated with contemporary minimal drums, exciting rhythmic frills, and a rolling sub bass designed to smother everyone in the Silent Witness ether. Bass stabs and moody pads prevail with time stretched fills electrocuting all in it’s path. Dangerous business! Like a highspeed battle tank PRSPCT Recordings storms back to the scene with an obvious buy on sight record.. Current Value is finally up for his very own PRSPCT release and again he knows how to devastate the very ground he’s walking on.. By teaming up with Snow & Nanotek he’s upgraded the CV sound.. as allways.. The release sets off with ‘The Spell’ a mystical industrial roller.. Imagine a warehouse filled with Santa’s elves working on high quality beats all cute and cuddly.. Only to be plowed down in one foul swoop  by CV’s bulldozing mechanical bass lines leaving destruction, chaos and dead elf bodies.. Painting the halls red with blood! Flip it over for ‘Code Of Chaos’ for another heavy duty roller.. This one is a bit more stripped down but that doesn’t mean this one is ‘Minimal’.. Pounding rattling beats infused with deadly tech bleeps. A sure shot when it comes to testing out the rig.. Drums & Basses.. as DnB was intended!

INMIN002 – Various Artists – Covered By The Dust EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Unquote and Mr. Sizef are two upcoming producers hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia. Their deep, abstract and creative approach (tune names included) have earned them releases on such highly praised labels as Hospital, Med School, Liquid Brilliants, Absys, Blu Saphir and Basswerk. Having a bright future in front of them, these two are taking atmospheric drum ‘n bass to another level. A-SIDE: BLUE MOTION & UNQUOTE – COVERED BY THE DUST Fans of the Russian duo, Subwave will be immediately drawn to the dust. Blue Motion teams up with Unquote for this atmospheric masterpiece. Blissful pads, a catchy electronic riff, and crescendoing bass creates the introduction, before wading into an early break. Intricate drum patterns articulate the center of the track, bringing with it deep, rumbling bass and a simplified female vocal. It’s not long before the second break hits, and the track’s formula starts again. Try to listen to this one all the way through. You won’t be disappointed. B-SIDE: MR. SIZEF – 170 STEPS OF LONELINESS Where do these 170 steps lead? Would the siren in the intro be any indication? As the sweet, pitched-up female vocal rolls through alongside a slightly distorted synth riff, the bass comes flanging in with a galloping sort of feel before all of the elements come together for some great, traditional drum ‘n bass. Great use of effects on this one. C-SIDE: MR. SIZEF – LILY IS A FLOWER WHICH IS GIVING RISE TO LOVE Heavy bass and female chant samples accompany a tribal drum style to introduce this beauty. The drums filter in alongside multi-layered pads. A short break rides through right away, but it isn’t long before the sophisticated rhythm and chopped up vocal come back around. This tune would make a wonderful set closer. D-SIDE: UNQUOTE – WE BREATHE YOGHURT LYING ON A STRAWBERRY BED One would be curious as to what a track such as this one would sound like. Images and visuals floating through your head as you press play; the airy, angelic pad intro induces you into a trance-like state before soothing piano lines and a pitched-up vocal reminiscent of the early hardcore era takes you away. As the drums come in with a half-time feel, it is easy to imagine Japanese taiko drummers playing their part.

MR011 – Jamie George – Flying Saucer (Ft Roska & J Kenzo Remixes) – 12″ Vinyl
Roska’s Kicks and Snares/RKS is back with another big release, and this time it comes courtesy of Jamie George with the hotly anticipated Flying Saucer. First picked up by DJ Oneman, making it a feature on his Rinse mix cd, support for this track has grown and grown with well known acts such as Toddla T, Hot Chip and Tomb Crew repping it hard. Combining elements of UKG, House and Dubstep Jamie has created an instant classic that has worked hard to earn this release and the plays of DJ’s all across the country. Roska himself steps up with the first remix, a re-imagining with special attention on the percussion, elements of tribal and dancehall peel back the layers of the original in the way that only a talented minimalist like Roska can. With his speciality lying in the truly funky Roska drops a mix that literally drags you up to your feet and pushes you harder the longer it’s played. J Kenzo, of Dub Police fame, completes the package with a much darker, harder affair. You get the impression he took the original track and made it watch the entire Saw series back to back with Halloween then sent it back scarred forever. In all seriousness Kenzo has a real talent for creating dark, bass driven tracks and he has expanding on that here adding heavy portions of electro and old school to compose a truly original mix. Check them out and get back to us.

ZAUDIO022 – Genetix – Hangin – 12″ Vinyl
This young talented duo is showing us how the heavier side of Dubstep should be done! You can really hear from their productions that they know their way around the studio and when you play some of Genetix tunes on a big system, make sure you put up some health hazard signs! Death by subs is a high possibility. Okay, on to the tunes! “Hangin’” is just one of those tunes to watch out for. It will blow your chest up with bass, make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck and possibly wet yourself with excitement. That’s only if you’re lucky though. Then we have “Trigger Happy” featuring Persist whose name I seem to be coming across quite a bit at the moment. This tune is great and can’t really choose between this and “Hangin’”. Both are insane! Then last but not least is “Sci Tech” which is on the deeper side. Great tune and a nice way to round off this great EP!

HF026 – Sepalcure – Fleur EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following the release of their stunning summer debut EP ‘Love Pressure’, Sepalcure – a Brooklyn-based duo composed of Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma – have announced their second EP featuring four brand new cuts, due for release in late January 2011 on Hotflush Recordings. Having produced for years individually as Machinedrum (LuckyMe) and Praveen (of Praveen & Benoît), their new collaboration breathes a new life of its own, reflected in its distinctive, lush sonic warmth and a refreshing style of composition that is as equally fitting on the dancefloor as it is in the comfort of one’s home. Be it the gentle melodies of “Fleur”, the ascendant effervescence of “Your Love”, the relentless bass of “No Think”, or the suspending ambience of “Inside”, it is a sound that is unmistakably Sepalcure. Their live performances have been gaining steam over the last year, beginning with appearances at Unsound Festival, Dub War NYC, and The Bunker, followed by a live showcase at Portland’s Decibel Festival in September, they are set to embark on their first European tour with other Hotflush artists this December. IBR005 – Various Artists – Tax Haven I – 12″ Vinyl
Iberian records comes out of a hibernation period with the a series of “Tax Haven” EPs. This first EP comes from a group of producers located in the Barcelona bass enclave and who have been some of the main players in the monthly B.LOW events there. Dedicated to what the label describes as Bass’n'Groove, this EP contains three varied and original sounding tunes with different Bpms suited to the leftfield of various bass music fields (dubstep/funky/future garage etc). First up sees Mr. Gasparov’s “Transient Love” come in the guise of a house influenced little gem of a tune featuring Japanese vocalist G.Rina (who has previosly worked with RSD and Nicolette) who cooes and whispers about transient lovers. Those of you already aquainted with Mr. Gasparov with his release on Soul Jazz Records “Steppas Delight 2″ compilation will recognize the attention to subtle melodic play. There is an overall summery vibe coming here – so something to warm us all up with and make us look ahead to brighter days. Accompany with a mojito and some afternoon sun! Next up sees Nehuen’s “Between Love and Hate” which is a tense stripped down bass’n'beat workout with a persistant bass riff and schizoid strings bringing the darkness. Nehuen is an artist that usually getting support from Dusk + Blackdowns Rinse radio show. There is a grimy and ruff feel here not to dissimilar to some Soulja releases from back in the day. Tuff steppas gear. On the 45rpm flip side Relocate come with their trademark relentness sub bass boogie on “Soul Survivor”. Opening with live drum rolls and low end throbs the tune drops into a driving heads down rhythm, laced with swinging ruff arse beats and a frustrated female vocal hook on the drop – “That I just came…” After which the rhythm section pounds away trying to please her! This is a souped up turbo garage workout pimped for the floor and primed for the bassbins.

Dj Madd has been a known face within the dubstep scene for while now.. his releases on Blackbox, War, Boka, Tube10 have been getting massive support.. RECIPE011 – Sato – Detroit Lies Bleeding / Seeker – 12″ Vinyl
Sato debuted on Ingredients and this is now his 3rd single. “Detroit lies bleeding” is a deep roller, perfect in the mix and a wicked groove. “Seeker” is more of a rave out, wicked piano on the intro before the bass rumbles and the drums roll. Perfect dj material and that forgotten art within drum & bass – some dancefloor energy! Dj Support London Elektricity, Die, Break, Futurebound, Presha.

CRIT050 – Cyantific – 305 / Opium – 12″ Vinyl
Critical Music reaches the big 50! A fantastic feat for any independent label in today’s climate but particularly one which has never been afraid to step outside the box and experiment with its output whilst always retaining the utmost integrity. Thanks to superlative A&R’ing skills by label boss Kasra and his genuine love of the music, the Critical brand now commands respect all over the world and with this 50th release it’s easy to see why. Long time friend of the label Cyantific takes the honours here with an absolutely blazing gem in the form of ‘305’ b/w ‘Opium’. Listener, believe and beware – the nastiness comes in full force! Do not be misled by the intro’s delicate vocals amid tranquil oceanic waves; ‘305’ exercises a fierce and fiery energy that pays testament to the versatility of artist and label alike. High synths elevate and peak into a brutal morphing, winding bass, laced with appropriately vicious snares. Definitively dangerous and beautiful at the same time, ‘305’ is one to pollute the dance floor – an electronic euphoria that’s just downright dirty. ‘Opium’ brings a techno-infused mischief to the table, where crisp drums meet a charismatic, undulating bassline. A perky stepper, ‘Opium’s chirpy synths are wholly violated by its fluctuating bass. Layered over the squelching b-line lie glitchy vocal samples, enough to trip up the electronic bleeps that drip throughout, giving this track some seriously sweet ‘n’ sour bite. An awesome ending to a fantastic release. To mark this 50th release look out for free celebratory Critical mix CD’s and other goodies in all good record stores and online retailers. DJ support from Friction, Hype, Danny Byrd, Logistics, Nu Tone, London Elektricity, Kasra, Total Science and more.

RECIPE013 – Skeptical – Sphere / Dream Police – 12″ Vinyl
Skeptical returns once again with his trademark dub influenced drum & bass. “Sphere” is just deep down low, with sparse drums and a killer bassline. This is everything that is good about Underground Drum & Bass. While “Dream Police” is some half time duttyness! Fans of Breakage should check this 12”, another killer release from DnB’s best kept secret. Support from D-Bridge, Jubei, Genotype, Ant TC1, Doc Scott, Fierce, Storm, London Elektricity, Blu Mar Ten, Survival, Break. Worth checking Skeptical’s “Eggs Florentine” recipe too.

SSS022 – Bad Robot – Black Whip – 12″ Vinyl
BaD RoBoT is the collective unit of Phetsta and Rregula, two cyborgs who have traveled back in time from 1980′s to the present day. So far they have released on BSE’s huge Endangered Species LP, Habit Recordings and Technique, with forthcoming material on Incite & Renegade .Their basslines are rough like metal….and they are both, in fact, made of metal. Their melodies are so beautiful they can make a robot understand why it is that Edward Furlong cries. Look out for the robots, they have lasers for eyes….the kind that hurt when you look at them for too long.

FRJ008 – Geiom – Resi Claart – 12″ Vinyl
We’re proud to announce Geiom’s full debut for Frijsfo Beats, His 12-inch is doubly exciting in that it makes a new departure into the tempo and rhythms of ‘half-step’ drum ‘n’ bass. The tracks have already earned support from ASC (Autonomic), DJ Alley Cat, Boxcutter, Autechre and West Norwood For this latest material, the closest reference point is drum & bass’s thriving half-step sub-genre. ‘Resi Claart’ unfolds with a similar steely, Terminator-like persistence, although instead of militantly in thrall to the grid, it’s gracefully executed. In certain ways the vibe is closer to nineties ambient jungle, although it couldn’t be mistaken for a product of either scene – fleshed out as it is with Geiom’s distinctive harmonies in brown, dystopian mode. B-side ‘Stel Dum’ is subtly woven around live drum and Moog tracks, pivoting on a skeleton of robotic calypso percussion as the title half suggests. Gradually the framework is stuffed with digitised silk and spice textures, building up a palette as lush as that of Island Noise and making for just as absorbing a listen. It might have been simple to capitalise on the existing reputation of Geiom’s music in other styles, but we think it’s more than worthwhile to bring listeners this new stage of his evolution. We hope you’ll agree.

b Geiom – Stel Dum

New D&B Promos

EXIT026 – Various Artists – Exit Records Presents ‘Mosiac Vol 1’ Sampler 2 – 10″ Vinyl
Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 2. With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles. As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. Well known producers such as Skream, Instra:mental, Scuba and Commix rub shoulders with some inspiring new talents such as Indigo, Synkro, Mode and Code 3. The theme of the album is quality timeless music, whether it be a dance floor killer such as Systems ‘Observation Point’ or Loxy and Resounds ‘Vertigo’ through to the tangerine dreamlike sounds of Croms Invisible Cities’ or Stray’s ‘Pushed’, this album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today. Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

b Mode – Stepping Stones

CRIT051 – Rockwell – Aria EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Super limited white label hand stamped promo. Bellissimo.

VOOMUSIC004 – Raiden – Forbidden Fruit / Bogotá – 12″ Vinyl
Perhaps the most daring of the Voodoo catalogue so far, Raiden returns for his second solo outing with two numbers that truly explore the percussion concussion of Voodoo Music. Forbidden Fruit To paint a picture of this track it would be fair to say Raiden channeled the ghost of Les Baxter got him in the studio. The exoctica of Mr Baxter is married with Raidens bass work. Subtle but yet weighty and prominant enough for dancefloors. The track is the deep blue unknown- keys twinkle in the track like tropical fish speeding past coral.  Theres a famous description of how people took in Baxters music “Listeners  were able to stroll around some taboo emotions, view a pagan ceremony, go wild in the sun or conjure a demon, all without leaving home hi-fi comforts” The same can be said for Raidens ‘Forbidden Fruit’ – A journey through some very different landscapes. Bogotá. The tense cousin of the first track, Bogotá comes through weighty and uncomprimising in its approach. A sustained rhythm is driven by subbass that is capable of moving the plates underneath us, Raiden once again shows us a very different side to his production. Most of the percussion in the track was recorded live by Raiden himself, bought whilst on his tours of South America. The track was a labour of love that already has dancefloors in awe – Doc Scott recently publicly commented “Just wanna say – Raiden - Bogotá caused major ruptions @ A Bunch Of Cuts last week, big, original, fresh DNB!”.

BRK017 – Hem Ft. Terrible Shock / Hem – On a Mission (Shortstuff Remix) / Rich Chroma / Plastic Lily – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. For this tune Hem and Terrible Shock take apart an 80’s soul LP, add some sci-fi synths, lazy drums and a sprinkling of analogue FX. After many painstaking hours of recording the duo take a well earned coffee break, then return to the studio just in time to see the back of the light-footed Blunted Robots man Shortstuff as he runs off chuckling ‘your vocals are mine now!’ Revenge plans are made, vehicles are fuelled up in preparation – but these activities are cut short by the arrival of an email from the culprit – it seems that he took the files back to his HQ for what he describes as a ‘refix’ – with the engines still running, Hem and Shox check out the file and find it to be a work of genius – what they hear is an accelerated kaleidoscopic fusion of on-beat claps and snares in a peak-time northern soul style, super heavy subbass hits and hectic syncopated keyboard chops. The easy tempo and flow of the original have been transformed into a dancefloor classic, no doubt about it. Hem and Shox call off the troops and head back to the studio – calls are made, contracts drawn up and everything gets sent off to Transition for the magical transfer to vinyl. For the flipside the duo select 2 fresh beats from the archives featuring all the trademark Hem elements – flexible riddims, slinky edits, fat synths, warm bass tones, hip-house references… The refix of ‘On a Mission’ featured on Onemans’ much-loved Rinse 11 mix CD. The 12” has already been reviewed in publications such as IDJ and Mixmag – they described it as ‘psychedelic new jack swing’, and its currently being played by the likes of Subswara crew NYC (Soul Motive), Brackles (RinseFM), Mark Pritchard (Warp), Martin Kemp (Blunted Robots), Toddla T (Ninja Tune), Shortstuff (Ramp), Spamchop (Wigflex), Oneman (RinseFM), Geiom (Berkane Sol)

Tes La Rok is a dubstep DJ & music producer from east Helsinki, Finland. He was one of the first international names to break thru in the scene few years ago. Walsh say’s his style is very energetic and his sets full of uptempo tracks, “I’m really into the more techy, futuristic side of the sound. Mystical pads, staggered beat patterns, weighty sub bass…”I love it mate!”

HENCH022 – Mensah – Digital Dreamer – 12″ Vinyl
Mensah’s debut release on the HENCH imprint, Pulse 80’s, turned heads with its stylish production and out-of-the-box approach. His follow-up release, ‘Untitled Future Funk EP’, was all the talk on the blogs and his remix of Baby D’s ‘Let me be your Fantasy’ has been hailed as one of the hallmark dubstep tracks of 2010. With each new release Mensah’s studio skills and fresh thinking stand out ever clearer. This latest offering will be no disappointment… A. DIGITAL DREAMER A dreamy synth-line commences ‘Digital Dreamer’, which immediately sets the scene for one of Mensah’s more ethereal productions. The harmonic lead-line builds into an other-worldly riff before releasing that tripped-out, bouncing bass rhythm. Synths let loose overhead, twisting and turning the track into the funky number that it is. Once again, something different from the man like Mensah… AA1. KASHMIR (W/NOAH D) Teaming up with US producer, Noah D, the duo creates an echoey and foreboding backdrop to ‘Kashmir’. The mystic vibe quickly graduates with a captivating bassline, weaving its way through the frequencies. Kashmir has achieved that perfect balance between being musicallyintriguing and packing punch for the dancefloor. AA2. BIG UP THE GOONS A familiar arpeggio gently makes way for a gully-goon vocal. You’re then met with a shuddering bassline that goes a long way to create a haunting yet driven soundtrack. Forwardmoving and weighty, the mid-section provides a brief pause for reflection before reverting back to fully-flexed low-end funk.

New Dubstep / Funky / Techno Promos

DISF012 – Phaeleh – Falling – 12″ Vinyl
‘Falling’ Disfigured Dubz kick off the New Year with this single by Bristolian producer Phaeleh, hot off the back of his debut album ‘Fallen Light’. With this offering, he sticks very much to his trademark style. An intricate and ever progressing drum track provides the spine for the thought provoking cloudy atmospheres, glittering melodies and moody chords. He somehow manages to catch a similar vibe to early hardcore and acid house with its feeling of optimism and a new found freedom. Vocal snippets of ‘Life is so crazy ‘ and ‘let you go’ give the track a sense of meaning and compliment the musical elements perfectly. ‘Falling (Kulture Remix)’ On the flipside we have a remix by fellow Disfigured Dubz artist Kulture. He’s obviously picked up on the hardcore vibe and pushed it even further in that direction by adding an amen which automatically makes it sound like a lost hit from the early 90s. Beefing up the bass line and more vocal processing turns the original calm inducing track into an absolute dance floor destroyer but without over complicating it. The mixture of soothing musical elements and a lashing amen bring back memories of days gone by when there were no rules and there were no limits. An interesting insight into how dubstep could be taking dance music full circle.

HFT014 – George Fitzgerald – Don’t You – 12″ Vinyl
Hotflush Recordings presents the follow-up single to George FitzGerald’s summer debut “The Let Down” & “Weakness”. Due for release in mid-January 2011 on Hotflush Two, this much-touted single is seeing the light of day after its inclusion in Scuba’s groundbreaking SUB:STANCE mix compilation on Ostgut Ton earlier this year. Here we see the budding London-based producer reaching into the brighter side of dubstep and garage styles, achieving a mood that is both blissful and emotive. On the flipside, Scuba gives the original mix a churning techno re-flex under his SCB guise.

PIPS014 – Orphan101 – Propa / Disemble – 12″ Vinyl
Apple Pips is proud to present another original new talent from the Bristol bass underground – Orphan101. Having cut his teeth on Bristol pirate radio with Headhunter aka Addison Groove, Orphan101 surfaced earlier this year with some promising releases on Saigon and his own Decarhythm label, one of several new labels in Bristol (along with If Symptoms Persist, Idle Hands, & Subdepth) to be pushing a varied and seemingly boundary less take on bass music. A residency at the Apple Pips nights in Bristol allowed him to road test his beats and it’s here that Appleblim heard the awesome rolling 2-step-meets-Carl Craig-in-a-Bristol-soundclash track that is ‘Propa’. With skippy garage beats, a bleeped out intro, and the deepest sub-bass this side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, you need to hear this track on a system. It hurts! On the flip ‘Disemble’ takes us on a journey through his vision of minimal techno, in a dubstep context, with scratchy percussion rubbing up against twisted Ed & Optical ‘Wormhole’ era bass spasms. Having just come from playing at Fabric for Apple Pips takeover, things are looking great in 2011 for Orphan101. Early DJ/Radio support already coming from Mark Pritchard (Warp/Harmonic 313/Afrika Hi Tech), Instra:mental (Non-plus/Swamp81), Addison Groove, 2562 (Tectonic), Laurent Garnier, Angel Molina (Tresor) & more

DVA007 – GuGu / Scratcha DVA – The Afro Cuban EP – 12″ Vinyl
The seventh release on DVA records comes from a young, unknown resident of Manchester named GuGu. Staying true to the DVA style, his two tracks are fine examples of todays hybrid Funky House scene, maintaing the 4 to the floor drum patterns whilst drawing on a wide range influences… and as it suggests in the EP’s title, is packed full of Cuban flava. Straight up music designed to make people dance. It wouldn’t be right to get a DVA release without a feature from the man himself, Rinse Fm’s Grimey Breakfast show host Mr Scratcha DVA. As a slight deviation from the norm – and in a way a return to the styles his earlier production – DVA lays down a heavyweight slice of synth laden half step, defiantely one to pull your dirty face too. Check it out and get back to us with your thoughts.

DOT003 – Duffstep – Getting To Sirius Remix EP #1 – 12″ Vinyl
Like the joining of ancient clans or the marriage of Marie Antoinette to Louis of France the joining of the Duff brothers is something of a historical milestone. Since birth the Duff’s have gone their separate ways, one getting down on the worlds hipper dancefloors, hips-awiggling, head thrown back in rapture and all under a spinning disco ball. The other brother the troubled teen, hood up, eyes down, bass rumbling, one time selecta. Imagine then two estranged brothers, born from the same seed living awkwardly side by side, never entirely comfortable in each other’s company finally uniting on one massive inbred slab of sonic harmony. If you can imagine that slightly cack-handed analogy then that is pretty much what you get here. After a year of huge edits and original material Duff Disco has finally gone and had a fiddle with his brother? Both taken from the forthcoming Duffstep album ‘Getting To Sirius’, ‘Your Touch’ and ‘Backseat’ are original Duffstep tracks given a cosmic make over by Duff Disco. They are proper modern disco music that sits just the right side of funky, without conjuring images of fluffy boots and spiky hair, white shirts and fake tan. Whilst Backseat is the more euphoric of the two Your Touch is more moody than an emo teenager watching Twighlight. Both obviously Duff Disco but somehow keeping the family together as Duffstep’s finger prints are all over these too.

PL012 – The Subdivision / 501 / HLZ – Open Your Eyes EP – 12″ Vinyl
The SubDivision return home to Paradise Lost with the Open Your Eyes EP: epic vibes, hypnotic bass work, and complex programming manifest themselves as what might be considered their best work to date, and surely a production which defines their unique style for building cinematic tracks of epic proportions. The structure is trademark TSD: a beautifully drawn-out breakdown compliments the progressively building tension, leading to a thunderous climax toward the end. This tune is more of a journey than simply a DJ tool (although it’s a treat to mix with), and DJs such as Bunzer0, Djunya, 501 and Claw have used it to devastating effect in the mix. For variations on the Open Your Eyes theme, Finnish mercenary 501 was brought in and produces a devastating, sinister, half-stepping remix monster. This version utterly destroys the dancefloor in usual 501 fashion, but adds a twist of darkness. HLZ, whose work for Drum and Bass labels Chronic, Soul:R and Liquid V Recordings has brought him much acclaim, was recruited to offer up his own unique take on Dubstep for a second variation on the original. He uses signature bassline science combined with smacking, dancefloor-friendly drums, then tosses in an epic breakdown-buildup combination followed by a monumental drop that’s sure to get the dance jumping. Variety truly is the spice of life, and Paradise Lost Recordings once again seeks to bring that point home with the Open Your Eyes EP.

Everyday Junglist – Alternative Drum & Bass Awards 2010

Alternative Drum & Bass Awards 2010

12″ Of The Year – Winner:

Rockwell “Reverse Engineerring” b/w “Everything (& U)” Darkestral (LARTSEKRAD)
A hugely devisive release but one worthy of praise none the less. Reverse engineering is unlike anything else you will hear in d&b and while it is simply reveresed samples, it shows creativity and originality in abundance and is testamnent to Rockwell’s production prowess. The b side, everything (& u), is a beautiful counterpoint to the a side and goes to prove that the man has many strings to his bow. Aside from the music the design and packaging of the release is also second to none making this a worthy winner.

Album Of The Year – Winner:

Sabre “A Wandering Journal” Critical (CRITLP04 / CRITCD04)
Breathtaking in its scope and cinematic in its execution, this is an album in the true sense of the word which is a rarity in drum & bass. In fact, it really moves beyond being a ‘drum & bass’ album, rather falling more within the broader realms of electronica. A true tour de force.

Breakthrough Act – Winner:

Ulterior Motive
OK, so they kind of started making a name for themselves at the tail end of 2009 but 2010 has really see them take off and they are certainly now part of the d&b production elite, almost single-handedly bringing about a revical in the tech/neuro style a la Ed Rush & Optical circa the Wormhole era. While getting excitied over the fact that music sounds like it used to 10-12 years ago can be seen as a damning indictement on the state of the music today, if there’s one era that it would have been good to bring back it was this one, so props to the boys from Bournemouth for doing it so well.

Best Label – Winner:

Critical Music
A wonderfully diverse collection music has been released on critical this year from the abstract vibes of rockwell, through the straight up dancefloor of S.P.Y, Bladrunner and Break, to the minimalism of stray and the soulful ‘Redlines’ from Total Science and Riya, it has covered all bases. Whilst many labels claim to be diverse few are, and critical is showing them how it should be done.

Skeptical’s ‘Cold One’ rubber-stamped his arrival on the drum & bass scene. With releases signed to Exit, Dispatch & 31 records, 2010 is shaping up to be his year. Man of the moment Jubei loved it so much, he wanted to try his hand at remixing it, his first ever remix to boot. The Metalheadz artist grabbed it with both hands and provided this monster reese classic! Hypnotic from the start & an almighty bass drop, if this is his first ever remix, then it won’t be his last! Pessimist is a young talent from Bristol, after receiving a few demos, we wasted no time in snapping him up. “Zulu” is one of the most epic drum & bass tunes of 2010. Hot 12!! DEAD023 Temper D – Break It Down 12″ Vinyl
For the 23rd outing on this imprint deadlyp turns to long time producer temper d, who has had a string of releases on his own imprint and thought it’s time to spread his wings a bit wider as he comes with 2 different tunes than you would expect from him. Both tracks have been doing damage on the dance floor as this 12 offers something for the tech heads and the jump up crew. ‘break it down’ is a techy tearout tune that does what it says on the tin, a short intro that gets straight to the point rolls then gives way to destroying bass, and crazy stabs. One to check for sure. ‘wanna say’ is a gritty styled jump up track . with flowing chords thru out the intro with a whispered vocal ‘ I know what you wanna say’ paired with the crisp beats that take you to the drop. Then all hell is let lose as the gritty b-line and the beats take control clever use of the vocal aid the tracks progress. This tune does serious damage on the floor!!! Support from Temper d , nicky bm, ash attack, to name a few!

LARTSEKRAD Rockwell – Reverse Engineering 12″ Vinyl
Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Artwork: Black Reverse Board sleeve, Bronze Pantone logo and text throughout, all sleeve and label information written backwards in keeping with the reverse concept. Cut in inside-out (record plays from centre label out to the edge) on a Scully Lathe. Release: Less a best kept secret, now a fully fledged artist of the moment Rockwell has been steadily building a reputation as one of the more progressive electronic artists around in 2010, with an ear for a different take on how to move dancefloors whilst also showing an adept ability at beat programming that is setting himself apart from his peers. Darkestral finally release one of the most talked about tracks on underground forums (10K plus posts on a DOA) and unleash the bewildering ‘Reverse Engineering’ – a track solely built from backwards parts, that has been delighting, confounding and confusing dancefloors the world over. Coupled with the polar opposite beauty of ‘Everything (& U)’, which continues the Darkestral love for contrasting sides on releases, and was recently licensed to FabricLive52, this track marks a stamp of quality on the burgeoning minimalist dnb sound by adding the emotional layer that Darkestral aa sides have become known for.

SPKTRM straight from the USA is already a well established name out there with releases on labels like Human / Habit / Project 51 / Evol Intent / Barcode / SS. Avant Futura takes us into the depths with its hard hitting kicks, rollin snares, bassline growls and the sax floating around in the atmosphere. The flip Iconia is another bassline fuelled hardhitter. Spooky intro introduces the massive bassline. Big bad heavy beats will pound the speaker to shreds. SIRENUK001PT2 Siren – Broken Silence Part 2 12″ Vinyl x 2
Part 2 of the Vinyl Eps’ featuring tracks taken from their debut album, “Broken Silence”, on their own Siren Records has been doing damage on the DJ circuit for some time now. Tracks such as ‘Gumball Rally’ and ‘Broken Silence’ have been staples in the sets of everyone from Andy C to DJ Marky to Fabio and Chase and Status, as well as the new breed of artist producers such as S.P.Y, Spor and Jubei. Over the last 10 years Universal Project are responsible for hits such as ‘Vessel’ on the Virus imprint, ‘Haunted Dreams’ on their own label Universal Project and an EP on DJ Hype’s True Playaz, as well as ‘Streetilfe’ with DJ Friction for Advanced Recordings and many Renegade Hardware smashers such as ‘Danger Chamber’, ‘Comin’ Thru’ and the Black Techno EP. The Universal Project sound is B-Boy breaks with techno elements and dubwise bass, and everything in between. Vicious Circle broke through in 2005 with their monster remix of Universal Project’s ‘Jackhammer’ and have been destroying dancefloors ever since with their unique sound. Releases such as ‘Between the Lines’ and the ‘Welcome to Shanktown’ EP on Renegade Hardware pushed them to the forefront of the tech dnb scene. Subsequent releases on Digital Soundboy, Critical and Quarantine displayed a diverse style that has helped establish them as heavy hitters across the board whilst collaborations with high profile artists such as Chase & Status, Dom & Roland, Fierce and most recently Jubei clearly demonstrate the respect they command from their peers. After spending a lot of time in the studio together Vice and Ruxspin decided to create a new guise for their own brand of rolling future funk. Siren is the result. Both artists in their own right have toured the world from the farthest reaches of Europe to the United States and Asia, consistently destroying dancefloors and gaining a reputation as masters of their craft. The aim of this duo is to cover all styles within the scene and not be constrained by subgenres, whilst still maintaining a dancefloor ethos which is true to their UK roots.

New D&B CD

RISECD03 Concord Dawn – The Enemy Within CD
Nestled within what old-world Englishmen would call The Antipodes, New Zealand is truly an exceptional place. Taking huge pride in their native musicians, radio stations are bound by law to give over a fixed percentage of airtime to New Zealand artists. This results in a rather special situation for independent dance music producers, such as Auckland raised Matthew Harvey, a.k.a. Concord Dawn. With a level playing field underground genres like drum & bass have thrived in New Zealand, with producers being lumped in alongside traditional pop stars and rock bands. It’s no overstatement to say that Concord Dawn is an institution in NZ, proven by the presales for ‘The Enemy Within’ on iTunes New Zealand which saw the album slot in at a rather healthy #2 just between Shihad (NZ’s biggest rock band) and Maroon 5. Featuring a selection of guest appearances, from fellow NZ D&B dons Bulletproof and Cern, to ‘80s pop star Rikki Morris ‘The Enemy Within’ provides a rich tapestry of tastes and flavours across the drum & bass spectrum that will prove to be just as popular on the world stage as it is at home.

CD 1 is un-mixed and features all the album tracks. CD 2 is mixed and features all the album tracks plus extra tracks in the mix. After years of success in their relative drum and bass production outfits, Siren is a collaboration of Vice from Vicious Circle and Ruxspin from Universal Project. Their debut album, “Broken Silence”, forthcoming in November 2010 on their own Siren Records has been doing damage on the DJ circuit for some time now. Tracks such as ‘Snorkel’ (included on Andy C’s Nightlife 5 compilation), ‘Gumball Rally’, ‘Rollers Convention’ and ‘Broken Silence’ have been staples in the sets of everyone from Andy C to DJ Marky to Fabio and Chase and Status, as well as the new breed of artist producers such as S.P.Y, Spor and Jubei.

NONPLUS009 Jimmy Edgar – +NXTLVLNXTLVL / My Balance (Last Priority) 12″ Vinyl
Hot off the back of his sexually charged XXX album which included the track ‘Hot Raw Sex’ of which Instra:mental provided one of many remixes, Jimmy Edgar has elevated the Nonplus catalogue with this superb two track 12”. a) Jimmy Edgar ‘+NXTLVLNXTLVL’ Upon listening to this track it’s obvious this guy oozes natural musical talent from every orifice. Jerky electro beats set the backing or playful chords and melodies and the odd bit of pitch bent Gfunkery, all spliced together with the trademark “on the fly” sounding sequencing like he’s played the whole track from start to finish off the top of his head. This is Jimmy Edgar doing what he does best and that is making raw music with his raw talent. aa) Jimmy Edgar ‘My Balance (Last Priority) – ‘My balance’ takes the tempo down somewhat and heres where the real sleaze begins. Wolf whistling synth lines, laid back bass and silky smooth drums merge into an orgy of aural pleasure. Think strip clubs, neon lights, and budget porn flicks and you’ll be someway toimagining what this track sounds like. Perfect backing track for a night between the sheets with that special someone.

DZ001 Data – Hedorah 12″ Vinyl
Data and the guys from Dubzilla bring two monsters from him to their first release. Both tracks have his trade mark production which is deep, dark and heavy. Minimal glichy drums and a grinding bline set you up for a ride then the sub bass cracks open your head! Little white lies has a crisp kick and snare that has time and space to create the scene, haunting vocals then take over with a killer bass this track is so deep you could drown in it. Acid techno samples flow in and out of the tune totally flipping the script from time to time.

One half of the album vinyl is set to be released on Shadows Of The Empire, containing a pick of the dubstep tracks taken from ‘Lights And Wires’.From the opening bars of ‘The 405′ it’s clear that Black Sun Empire have retained their distinctly stark techno influences blended with a more refined edge. ‘Dirty Friday’ strays further and deeper, mellowing the aggressive undertones with wide-open synths and delicately placed sound effects. Teaming up with SPL, Black Sun Empire bring you ‘Wasteland’, a track with an epic intro that drops into an apocalyptic vision of the future. Finally ‘Brommer’ enthralls as creeping effects are married with light, skipping beats and captivating bass.

PL010 Dubtek – Dubtek EP 12″ Vinyl
Paradise Lost Recordings is proud to present the first proper release from Seattle’s Dubtek: a 3-track EP in which Dubtek teams up with Australia’s finest, Droid Sector and Boot, as well as Italy’s Mouch to showcase three distinctive sounds. The lead track and a three-way collaboration, The Trancening brings together influences from progressive house/trance and mixes those with proper heavy subheavy dubstep to produce a tranced-up killer which will keep the most traditional dubstep fan satisfied while at the same time cause those more up for epic progressive and trance tunes to break out their glowsticks (well, we hope just in spirit!).  These three accomplished producers demonstrate both their technical prowess in the studio and their talents for stirring up a frenzy on the dancefloor.  The second drop just kills it! On the flip, Dubtek offers up two deeper tracks that are smooth as butter.  Smoke works on a number of different levels bringing in a beautifully constructed smooth as silk bassline to compliment melodic atmospherics and a garage-inspired vocal hook that are sure to bring smiles to those on the dancefloor.  He teams up with Mouch from Venice, Italy to bring us a brilliant, calculated dancefloor builder with dreamy arpeggios and ice-cold sci-fi fx and atmospherics – essential!

DRUNK020 Ekoplekz – Stalag Zero / Distended Dub 12″ Vinyl
300 hand-numbered copies for the world, each sheathed in individually hand-painted sleeves. No repress, means no repress. Punch Drunk, Bristol’s esteemed electronic music imprint, celebrates it’s 20th release with a strictly limited edition 12″ single. This double A-side is also the official debut release by shadowy Bristol-based experimental electronic musician Ekoplekz. As such, it represents something of a departure for the label, for here is an artist who shuns modern digital production techniques in favour of primitive analogue devices, lo-fi cassette recorders and a spontaneous, improvised approach to composition. Taking inspiration from ‘Radiophonic’ soundtracks, early dub reggae, krautrock and post-punk D.I.Y. experimentors like Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle and Robert Rental, Ekoplekz is intent on introducing a new generation to the kind of raw eruptions of sound that first gave birth to the UK’s electronic underground over 30 years ago.

HENCH022 Mensah – Digital Dreamer 12″ Vinyl

ENM005    Spellbound / Fortune – Triad    Engine Music    12″ Vinyl
Engine Music is delighted to present this next release from German wunder-trio, Triad. Comprised of Henree with releases on Soul:R and C.I.A under his belt, Bastikal, headhoncho of the much respected PhunkFiction label and L Flow a classically trained musician and avid analogue synth collector. As Triad they belong to the new breed of producers, reexamining the conventions and reinvigorating the experimentation in the dnb genre which has been lacking unitl late. Two slices of mature, open minded dnb with Spellbound on the A side. A subdued, bass heavy stepper with a naughty bassline switch up. Fortune on the flip is a little half tempo number with dubbed out samples and a sultry bassline. Or as we like to call it: a slow grinder. Fans of the current Autonomic sound should not sleep on this! Dj support from Goldie, Teebee, Calyx, Lenzman and Flight amongst others.

RECIPE010    Cold One / Fallen Angel – Skeptical / Skeptical & Dub Phizix    Ingredients Records 12″ Vinyl
BIG TUNE!! So much attention this year has been on the minimal sounds within drum & bass. Skeptical, a name creeping up the chain, has really honed this skill of keeping it minimal yet powerful. “Cold One” is arguably his finest tune to date. Bringing back the hoovers, while delivering a totally fresh style, this is a must have tune. Dub Phizix from Manchester, is another new name, but with a slew of releases on big labels pending it won’t be long before he becomes a buy on sight artist. This co-lab with Skeptical is absolutely dangerous, watch the bassbins, i’m telling ya! PM020 Eternalism / Paralyze Babylon – Paradox / Equinox Paradox Music 12″ Vinyl
The 60th 12” across the Paradox labels has landed! and to mark PM020 in style Paradox Music has finally added the legendary Equinox to their artist roster after nearly a decade of requests. ‘Paralyze Babylon’ oozes funk and dnb knowledge as Marlon Equinox demonstrates that it is possible to roll linear edited breaks (a paradox in itself). Low subs rumble underneath fx and reggae vocals whilst a great 808 b-line complements dirty amen loops that swing left-to-right, but still have that paramount linear funk – a simple master class in breakbeat science. Paradox switches his amen eq to complement ‘Paralyze Babylon’ for a raw jungle workout on the flip. ‘Eternalism’ is uncooked meat Paradox style! Crusty low pitch patterns with a heavy bass kick pedal keep everything in check whilst fx and eerie film samples swirl around intricate reverse breaks that don’t fall down the stairs. DJ Support: Utah Jazz, Bailey, Zero T, Gremlinz, Naibu, Alley Cat, Soul Intent, Fracture & Neptune.

Wait till you hear the flip. This is even dirtier than the A-side. The Sect teaming up with Cooh and you get dirty to the extreme!! HBR001    Aqueous Cream / Ampersand – Ikonika / Ikonika & Optimum    Hum + Buzz Records 12″ Vinyl
Ikonika & Optimum are proud to introduce their highly anticipated new venture: Hum + Buzz Records. This double A side debut release is right at the centre of the current UK crossover, post-genre sound. First up, ‘Aqueous Cream’ explores a different sound to the one Ikonika delivered on her recent Hyperdub debut album. A dancefloor ready track with smooth sub bass, staccato piano chords, trademark emotive synth-leads, underpinned by tough kicks, sizzling hi-hats and ricochet snares. On side AA, ‘Ampersand’ marks Ikonika & Optimum’s first official collaboration. Layers of synth melodies float above a steady four/four pulse and unpredictable claps. An angular, broken, melodic march at a house tempo.

DUBLINE006 5 Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique / The Fifth Sense – Devnik Dubline 12″ Vinyl
Devnik (Bart) is an electronic music from the Netherlands. Devnik started producing in the late summer of 2008, just as a joke. As time passed, the music got better and better. First being into electro fidgety beats and getting signed on the English electro label Live-In Music, he eventually found out about a thing called dubstep. Dubstep now is his main goal, already being signed to Dubline Audio and having played along the likes of FuntCase, Cookie Monsta, Borgore, Unitz, Subscape, Crissy Criss, KOAN Sound, Ganja White Night, Sinister Souls, Osiris, Vyron, Switched Sources and more, Devnik is ready to destroy the dancefloor.

NSWL005 Hoes Come Out At Night (Ikonika Remix) – Cubic Zirconia / Bok Bok / Ikonika Night Slugs 12″ Vinyl
Another transatlantic soundclash on Night Slugs, this time centered around the New York-based R&B / acid house band Cubic Zirconia. On the A-side, elite Hyperdub producer Ikonika remixes Cubic Zirconia’s “Hoes Come Out At Night”, letting Tiombe Lockhart’s dirty rap vocals ride her charging 145bpm riddim. Infused with all of Ikonika’s signature cosmic synthwork, the ‘Hoes’ remix is also delightfully ghettotech-flavoured and primed for peak-time dancefloors. On the flip things get deeper as Night Slugs captain Bok Bok and Cubic Zirconia’s Nick Hook collaborate on an retrofuturistic acid-bassline banger by the name of “Reclash”. This time Tiombe is a ghostly presence, delivering disorientating incantations over Bok and Hook’s jacking 808 drums and soaring synth psychedelia. Night Slugs Booty from outer space.

NS007 The Velvet Connection – Velour Night Slugs 12″ Vinyl
The latest Night Slugs signing is steeped in mystery – a new project from two big producers (from the House and Dubstep scenes respectively) known only as Velour. “The Velvet Collection” is a concept EP of four subtle variations on a distinct theme: sleazy, luminescent, synth-soaked cosmic boogie infused with functionalist 808s. The EP is as much futuristic dance/sex music as it is an homage to iconic Roland hardware of the 80s. Opening track “Booty Slammer” announces Velour’s intentions right from the intro, before its longing chords give way to cavernously low booming 808 sub bass. Bittersweet as it is seductive, the track rolls in half- time, punctuated by a vocal refrain: “inside of me”. Very sensual! “The Scent Of Romance” and “Kick It Till It Breaks” both adapt the kind of jackin’ drums favoured by the Dirty Bird crew while Velour’s distinctive vintage synth work elevates them to the celestial realm. Both tracks work as spectacular tech-house centerpieces, but with enough low-end pressure to dominate any UK soundsystem. The EP is closed by “She Wore Velour”, a theme song for the project, which refigures the record’s sound palette into something more direct, driving and up-front. Arpeggiated twinkles and “Ripe Banana”-like pitch-bent beams of synth atop a massive diving sub are eventually consumed by an unforgettable chorus of keys. From the dancefloor to the boudoir, Velour is a pornographic synth odyssey on Night Slugs.

a2 Velour – Scent Of Romance
b1 Velour – Kick It Till It Breaks
b2 Velour – She Wore Velour

RS1008    The Temporary Thrillz EP – Space Dimension Controller    R&S Records 12″ Vinyl x 2
Limited first run on purple splattered vinyl 2×12” maxi EP format, that also has 4 locked grooves R&S Records return with another exciting young talent. Space Dimension Controller has already caused a fuss on the underground with his Love Quadrant (Kinnego) and Journey To The Unknown Sphere (Royal Oak) releases. SDC aka 20 year old Jack Hamill from Belfast makes music way beyond his years, high on concept, made on analogue equipment and head and shoulders above his peers. Probably the reason the exclusive Red Bull music academy chose him for their recent course in London. The Temporary Thrillz doublepack vinyl release sees Jack advancing his signature sound over this maxi ep format.
People have difficulty pinning down the SDC sound, I’ve seen it described as electro, space funk, cosmic disco, pop-psychedelic, techno-funk, jazz fusion, disco house and electronica. It’s probably all those things and more, and we are proud of the fact that its so hard to pigeonhole. A quick look at the tracklist of his Fact podcast mixes up Zapp, Class Action, Jonzun Crew, Model 500 and Der Zyklus which can give you an idea of where his head is at musically, and proves he’s a perfect artist for R&S.
The Temporary Thrillz EP contains intergalactic slow jams, deep club excursions and mid tempo space funk, all with the SDC trademark depth, soul and finesse. This is another release that will cement SDC as one of the best and most talked about young producers of the year.

a Space Dimension Controller – Mercurial Attraction
b1 Space Dimension Controller – Kaleidoscopic Ecstasy
b2 Space Dimension Controller – 2EZ (Autopilot’s Lament)
c Space Dimension Controller – Transatlantic Landing Bay

HENCH021 Red (Chasing Shadows Remix) – Chasing Shadows Hench 12″ Vinyl
Two formats in stock, Limited Red Vinyl pressing and Limited Black Vinyl. With the massive ‘It Was Written’, Chasing Shadows’ dark production style broke through. Having now had two double-sided H.E.N.C.H releases; ‘Dr Sin/ The End’ and ‘Ill/Amirah’ and their track ‘Dream On’ forming the crescendo for the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, these talented producers are rapidly becoming household names within the dubstep fraternity. Once again this duo brings to the table two tracks that have been the talk amongst all who’ve bared witness in the club. Two distinctive, destructive productions that are guaranteed to cause delight.
A. LAID BLAK – RED (CHASING SHADOWS REMIX) – Spanish-style guitar riff builds to make way for one of the catchiest vocal hooks that Bristol’s ever produced. Continue further to make way for a characteristically epic bassline drop that will shake the floor from beneath you. ‘Red’ is an awe-inspiring track that builds constantly. Expect the whole crowd to have hands in the air and singing along to this one – truly a future classic.
AA. ODYSSEY – Odyssey is the kind of production that your neighbours are going to loath you for, but you just can’t stop listening to it anyway. An Atmospheric and expectant intro builds into juggernaut-like bassline. Couple this with its rolling tempo and crashing snares and you get the idea of why it works on your iPod, on the stereo, in the rave, and pretty much anywhere else that calls for a roller of this proportion!

DBOOT011 Mr.Midnight – Suckafish P. Jones Disboot 12″ Vinyl
Suckafish P. Jones, the self-proclaimed ringmaster of voodoo electronics, returns to evil up your soundsystem with his second EP for Disboot records, ‘Mr Midnight’. Released on 12″ vynil for Disboot Records, Suckafish summons up four tracks of jagged robot funk from the depths of the swamp. Perverting the tropes and conventions of Uk Garage, Grime and hip hop, ‘Mr Midnight’ combines pulsing low end rhythms with possessive melodies to create a soundtrack to that full moon night that never ends. Sleazy, emotional, violent and ecstatic at the same time, Suckafish’s latest offering maintains his reputation for productions that ignite the dance with raw, infectious energy and humour. ‘Match Set Point’ sets off the proceedings in style, with it’s jerky hip hop beat propelled by apocolyptic toms and metronomic pulses. Threatening to crack apart like thunder at every turn, but holding us in its chaotic hypnosis, the track swirls its way through psychedelic arpeggios and bent, cascading vocals which remind us that, yes, ‘…the bounce is back’! The EP’s second track, ‘Wild and Dirty’, turns up the temperature; with its fractured post-dubstep beat that snaps open growling, detuned basslines and robo-funk melodics. Urgent, epic and overheated, it challenges you to drop any head-nod pretenses and start shaking like you’re possessed. ‘Bubble Farm’ offers perhaps the most jittery dancefloor-oriented offering of the EP. Combining elastic synthesis with hip swinging rhythms and tropical electronics, the track jerks us back and forth in impossible maneuvers within its fractured, low end bounce and melodic intricacy. To end, ‘The Touch’ pours out of the speakers as a solid barefoot beat carrying a wave of rich, dense analogue synths. With it’s ridiculously loose, manic LFOs, ‘The Touch’ throbs and snaps its way out of the speakers with all the swagger of a gold-tooth club classic for the post apocalyptic future.

a1 Suckafish P. Jones – Match set point
a2 Suckafish P. Jones – Wild and dirty
b1 Suckafish P. Jones – The touch
b2 Suckafish P. Jones – Bubble Farm

New DVD

SRKDVD001 Bassweight (Dubsteps first feature Documentary) – Various SRK DVD
BASSWEIGHT is a feature length documentary that offers an unparalleled insight into the subterranean world of Dubstep. Charting the genre’s growth from obscure origins in south London to global recognition today, the film features in-depth interviews with many of the DJ’s, producers and promoters who have been instrumental in Dubstep’s ongoing evolution. Skream, Benga, Kode 9 and Mary Anne Hobbs are just some of the key players who have contributed, reflecting on the movement they’ve helped shape; a movement that has come to define the importance of underground music in the 21st Century. This highly stylised film travels from Dubstep’s birthplace in Croydon to Europe, Brazil and Japan, demonstrating just how huge an impact this initially indigenous scene has made at an international level. Directed and produced by The SRK (Soka Afrika, Graffiti Asia, Rackgaki, Scratching the Surface: Japan), BASSWEIGHT documents this most clandestine of movements on its own terms and in its own voice.

One of the best documentaries made about the full spectrum of dubstep” Kode9

A beautiful snapshot of a fledgling scene.. A scene that would ultimately change the world of dance music forever.. You can feel the energy and the momentum in every frame..” Mary Anne Hobbs

Best depiction of the Dubstep sound and culture yet.” Joe Muggs (Mixmag)

New D&B CD

EXITCD006    Ritual Dance LP – Genotype    Exit Records CD
After a lengthy break from the electronic music world, Genotype is back with an LP for Exit Records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm. Having started his music career in the mid nineties under the legendary alias Just Jungle, with releases on the massively influential labels of that era such as Trouble On Vinyl, Renegade Hardware and Reinforced Records, its no surprise that he’s managed to capture the essence of rawness in his recent music akin to the early years of Jungle. Many producers have tried and failed to bring back the old skool sound with an original flavor but Genotype has managed this by resisting the temptation to lash in the tired old classic breaks and instead has drawn for the more organic sounding percussion and drum kits. The dubbed out theme runs throughout the album paying homage to his love for West Indian music which he has been involved in for many years and naturally influences the music he creates. Genotype is a man of few words and prefers to let his music do the talking so check out the album and draw your own conclusions.

New D&B Releases

TRIPS003 Kontroller / ABTN – Silent Witness & Break Triple Seed 12″ Vinyl
Welcome to the third release on Triple Seed. This time, featuring the classic partnership of Silent Witness & Break.
A. Kontroller – This number takes no prisoners with its anthemic reece and breakbeat driven madness. Designed to please crowds, this one will empower the dj and dress down his or her victims. Snippets of eighties pop vocals and guitar punctuate the lazer fight bass stabs providing all the tone and colour necessary to illuminate any flagging dance floor. Prepare to get caught in a mosh when this goes off.
AA. ABTN – Heads down! ABTN is two step tour de force of bass beats and atmosphere. The initial calm gives way to a ridiculously heavy bass growl and crisp beats that will entrance any self respecting party goer. Stripped down and serious, the contemporary minimal feel is backed up by typically beefy production that (really) will stand the test of time. DJ support from Andy C, Ed Rush, Goldie, Friction, Bad Company, Bailey, Fierce, Survival, Noisia, and more…

Drawing in the talents of Critical playmate Break to add his deft touch was always going to result in one thing – absolute dance floor devastation! Oozing class while smacking up the dance is something many producers can only dream of….the masterclass starts here. Drifting pads with sexed-up guitar touches intro the ‘Redlines’ remix before the drums kick and we’re away on a blues-infused excursion with full vocal riding on top as the chords roll out. Don’t be fooled though as the fun’s just about to start! A quick repeated refrain and suddenly in crash the amens, edits and the most gut-wrenching sub to demolish the place. Vocal teases run throughout together with swathes of guitar but it’s the sheer tearout that wins in the end. Absolutely fantastic.
Flipping things over and Total Science come back with the classic sounds of ‘Scaremonger’. Seemingly an ode to the vibes of yesteryear, this one bounces with the best of them. A hot twostepping break carries the stabbing b-line that morphs subtly as this wicked bubbler moves along with ease. Proper Total Science doing what they do best. DJ support from Andy C, Bailey, Hype, Friction, Cyantific, Logistics and many more.

MAC021    Rebel Music – Soul intent    Mach II Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Randalls Mac 2 recordings showcases another banging release with the return of fast moving breakthrough artist Soul intent. Having all ready featured on the label on the 17th release back in 2008 and on the recent justice league EP Soul intent returns once again to show us how rolling drum n bass should be done. The A side ” Rebel music” punches through with razor sharp breaks that bring the track to some seriously sub low basslines. Haunting vocals lead through the track introducing some seriously deep FX and strings that make this track one stone cold killer. The flip “Cybergroove” makes for a more upbeat affair but certainly shows Soul intents versatility as an artist. Percussion lead breaks and some haunting strings cut into a bassline that punches its way throughout the track before cutting into a FX lead breakdown. DJ support from : Randall, AI, Klute, Doc scott, Survival, Fabio, Crissy criss and eveson Radio – BBC 1Xtra and Kool FM

MEDI029 Feel It EP – V.I.V.E.K Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl x 2

Please note there is no CD with this pressing. The latest release on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint is a four track double pack Vinyl. It comes on the back of his first Medi release last year ‘Kulture’ b/w ‘Meditation Rock’ and countless dubplates that you’ll no doubt have heard if you’ve checked the Anti Social Entertainment on Rinse FM. Fusing digidub, sound system deep bass, rolling percussion, a hint of Berlin techno it all adds up to those ‘Medi’ style vibes; eyes down, blissed out, heavy weight music. The title track, ‘Feel It’ kicks things off in fine style with some of the most infectious rolling tablas – his percussion is just sublime. A vocal sample declaring the weight of your bass and the largeness of your soundsystem is all the track needs to usher in a chest thumping sub sonic bass tone and there is no way back you’re sucked into that soup of sub bass frequencies. ‘Grandfather Clock’ counts down to a dance floor meltdown when the metronome-like sample, half tempo drum patterns and hefty bass melts into blazing techno buzzes that just keep coming, it’s those killer synths that make it, truly coming from nowhere. The deeply blissful ‘Motherland’ is one for the meditative crew, subtle but weighty bass pulses roll off half stepping rhythms, tablas and all that good stuff all accented with Indian vocals instrumentation. It’s so deep, minimal it would make Youngsta proud. The final track ‘Strategy’ is a roller with a garage kind of swing to it, it skips along with big room dub techno chords twisting in and out of the bumpy beats it really comes alive and picks up the pace. Pure vibes all the way.

NMBRS11    Myth – Roska & Untold    Numbers 12″ Vinyl
Limited supply. Numbers is proud to present the debut release from Roska & Untold. In a move that is bound to shake up the markets, Long Range and Myth are the latest in dancefloor innovations brought to you by Messrs Jack Dunning (aka Untold; CEO of Hemlock Records) and Wayne Goodlit (aka Roska; MD of Roska Kicks and Snares). With fears over a lack of imagination in House music at an all time high, these two producers have joined forces to create two envelope-pushing solutions to this highly contentious issue. After several consultations a deal was sealed with the board at Numbers who in turn offered to provide logistical and technical support. A1 – Myth was constructed from the careful sculpture of demented wailing horns underpinned by precision crafted beats and bass. Leading industry experts have been hailing this as a step forward in the merger between Grime and House. AA1 – Long Range, inspired by the groundbreaking work performed in the KMS and Prescription labs of Chicago & Detroit respectively, resulting in a fresh House hybrid powered by the patented Roska Kicks and Snares and those deadly Untold subs.

NOMIC002    Seems Like / The Cycle Ft. Skream – Riya    Autonomic 12″ Vinyl

Finish copy promo. Next in line on a very busy Autonomic schedule is a single from one of the hottest vocal talents around, Riya. Lacing the Autonomic sound with her voice was an obvious choice for the Autonomic camp and the results are two timeless tracks that have been picked up on by a huge cross section of DJs such as Skream, Youngsta,dBridge, Instra:mental and many more. A) Riya – Seems Like – Having become popular after featuring on the Fabric/dBridge and Instra:mental Autonomic CD, this track has rightly been given a home on the Autonomic imprint and has been eagerly awaited by many. Riya proves her songwriting talents once again and complemented with the backing track by a certain other Autonomic
artist, this one was never going to fail. AA) Riya – The Cycle – The AA side offers us a different angle from Riya, with a steadily building backing track her vocals loop in a hypnotic and enchanting cycle around Rhodes chords and a pumping heartbeatlike 4×4 bassline. Pure simplicity and an uncluttered soundscape gives this track the listen again qualities expected from Autonomic.

PAL061 Assimilation – John Tejada & Josh Humphrey Palette Recordings 12″ Vinyl

Finish copy. Tejada and Humphrey made their debut together late in 09 with their “Marooned,” ep. “Assimilation” continues the theme of being marooned in Los Angeles. The four works compiled here are the result of the best moments out of 20 recording sessions. The music is for the most part assembled with analog instruments with Humphrey and Tejada bringing their modular gear together for the sessions. Humphrey’s knowledge of synths and programming is quite extensive. He until recently helped operate LA based Big City Music, a dealer of modular and boutique synthesizers.
The four works cover a wide range. “Assimilation” builds up panning modular basslines and swirling percussion with a building chord line that brings things together as the drums build. “Culture Shock” uses pitch shifting trickery to transpose the main melodic hook slamming it into nasty modular bass modulation giving the track it’s pretty/dark edge. “Adaptation” keeps it’s modular touches a bit more subtle focusing on classic melodic Tejada chords and nostalgic beats. “Subversion” rounds things out with a non 4/4 piece perhaps being the most nostalgic moment of the ep. This highly melodic uplifting track takes it’s cues from happy musical memories. Classic chords, 808 beats, and some melodic modular lines to close out the ep.

AWK002 Mango Tree / 2_12 – Dodger Man Awkward Movements 12″ Vinyl
Very limited finished copy promo. Awkward Movements returns to release the debut from London’s Dodger Man – one of the most talked-about new producers of the last 12 months. And with good reason. Dodger Man’s multi-instrumentalist background opened the door for his high-profile sets bombed with back-to-back dubs of his own creation. His workings played-out live have gained him a reputation as one of the top emerging DJs, the height of which came following an impressive set at Bloc Weekend, after being hand- picked by Joy Orbison to share the bill. The natural alignment with Awkward Movements has served up his highly-anticipated debut record, and it doesn’t disappoint. Marking Dodger Man’s official debut, Mango Tree steps in where the underground bass sound’s left off. Combining the same elements that pushed Floating Points and SBTRKT to the forefront in 2009 with the vibes that future garage has brought in 2010, Dodger Man takes it up with a deep bass rhythm, crunchy hi-end synth and drums for the decks and dancefloor. Bridging the gap between tech and dub, 2_12 is the stripped down evil-twin on the B-side. Take a complex 22 track and strip it to its core without losing it’s personality and you’ve almost arrived. A uniquely complex tune – wanting to burst out but eerily contained in its black hole minimal approach of grinded synth stabs and one-shot styled drums.

DRUNK019    The Hum / rrrr – Peverelist & Hyetal    Punch Drunk Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Punch Drunk continue to twist, redefine and push forward the template of dubstep with a new 12” combining the talents of rising star Hyetal and Bristol veteran Peverelist. As part of the second wave of Bristol dubstep producers, Hyetal has already made his mark, garnering critical acclaim for his recent 12” ‘Phoenix’ on Orca and previously releasing 12”s on labels such as Reduction and Soul Motive in addition to his collaboration with Shortstuff on Punch Drunk earlier this year. This is Peverelist’s second 12” release this year following his ‘Better Ways of Living’ release for Punch Drunk and his recent mix for Resident Advisor. Both producers bring their trademark ingredients to the table, Hyetal’s kaleidoscopic synthesis and Pev’s deadly junglistic rhythm section combine to produce two very different tracks. The Hum is immediately grabbing, brimming with propelling energy and uplifting melodics. The cryptically titled ‘rrrr’ is a much darker disorientating psychedelic affair, slowly luring you into it’s groove, providing another typical Punch Drunk curve ball.

PRDM003 Ratville Remixed Cuts #1 – Goth Trad / DJ Tuttle Publicriddim 12″ Vinyl

Finished copy 180 gram Vinyl. RATVILLE is a new school dub band releasing their 1st album Dubs on the Corner in 2009, leaving serious after effects throughout the country. This time, GOTH-TRAD and DJ TUTTLE, east – west dubstep masters remixed the tracks to create a challenging piece of vinyl cut!! Remix was done by two artists, contributing to the spread of dubstep in Japan. As a host of Back To Chill releasing from UK’s one and only DEEP MEDI MUSIK, GOTH-TRAD is now achieving worldwide prominence. On the other hand, leader of DUBSTEP RUDE, DJ TUTTLE is out to shake things up establishing a new label NODE with Akira Ohashi from Psycheouts G.
GOTH-TRAD’s side modestly builds up till it finally rocks the floor in the latter half. May suit for outdoor performances. Heavy duty 808 type kick supporting bottom end with metal-like percussion and SEs floating in the air, DJ TUTTLE side is made for the darkest closed chambers to inhale the low frequency. This is the spearhead of dubstep made in Japan. Hands-on approach of the two made a sensational reaction with Ratvilleafs sound, pushing it to the next dimension.
