New D&B CD

SUICIDECD010 – Various – Commercial Suicide: Compilation – CD
With a scene increasingly dependent on the over sweetened candy of rave junk beats, it this compilation offers a window to know there is genuine music of substance available for those who want to savor it. For most, Commercial Suicide has no equal and needs no introduction. Klute’s signature imprint, (established London, 2001) has sustained a release schedule which raised the bar in the drum and bass world. The label’s forward thinking approach has been the incubator for some of the most talented producers on the scene over the last decade. Break, Calibre, Klute, Dub Phizix, Vicious Circle; the list reads like a who’s who of contemporary drum and bass production. After extensive market research (i.e. being rewound at drum and bass events from Toronto to Tokyo) the songs were selected and what we have are 13 of the best d&b tunes covering all styles from established names to brand new up and comers. A lot of things have changed in the music business over the 10 years since, Commercial Suicide came into being. But one thing has remained constant; a great compilation can define a label and a scene or an era. To that end, the label has taken on the task of compiling an album that reflects and defines where the Commercial Suicide sound is in the year 2011.

EAST086 – A Sides – Ain’t Nobody / Temperature’s Rising – 12″ Vinyl
This 12” features two wicked tracks from the new A Sides album ‘Mysterious Vibes’. A Sides describes both in his own words.: I love “Temperature’s Rising” as it’s a perfect example of the rough with the smooth which I love, plus I took Fats’ vocals a step higher by having him work harmonies, something which he rarely does. I love the piano, always have since back in the day :) ! “Ain’t Nobody” is also a special track. It’s emotional to me and inspired by a certain somebody :) I love the strings, the smooth bass, the piano (again) and the beats which all create real soulful, uplifting vibes. New D&B Promos

DIS051 – Octane & DLR / Octane, DLR & EBK – Back In The Grind (Cern & Dabs Rmx) / Zulu Fade – 12″ Vinyl
As an amazing piece of work, there is no surprise that the tune could inspire some other great artists. For this one, both big Deep D&B heads Cern & Dabs, the Italian growing talent, decided to gather their efforts in order to revise the original. And something did happen. Cern is undoubtedly one of the deepest NZ producers of the moment. Remarked & signed by Gridlock last year on Project 51 for the great ‘Terminus’ LP, this is unquestionably his best work so far. A true hommage to the undisputed masters of the genre : Octane & DLR. They logically deserved a place on the Bside, joined by EBK for an other crazy masterpiece, ‘Zulu Fade’. A. ‘Back In The Grind’ (Cern & Dabs Mix) Because you can’t seriously have missed this one on the biggest worldwide dancefloors these last months. Andy C himself felt this is going to be one of the best remixes he’s heard all year, and so do we ! Cern & Dabs both provide all the strength and the energy that make up the very secret essence of the perfect dancefloor & intelligent tune. This is a ‘grind’ you’re going to love. AA. ‘Zulu Fade’ Octane, DLR & EBK From the very first steps you’re dived into the strange tribal world of ‘Zulu Fade’. Some original swollen basslines, special Octane & DLR imprint, meet the warlike drums and stark cold reeces of EBK. It’s grating, mighty, captivating. You’re in the jungle, surrounded by hostile faces staring at you. Warrior tomtoms start behind. Take your breath. And run. DJ support from: Hybris, Safire, Hydro, Vicious Circle, Survival, Marky, Ant TC1, Ulterior Motive, Andy C, Need For Mirrors, Skeptical, Xtrah, SPY, Artificial Intelligence, Amoss, Nymfo, Mindscape, Chris SU, Break & Kasra, to name a few.

REDSEAL013 – Tokyo Prose & Phil Tangent – Parity / Rearview – 12″ Vinyl
Coloured vinyl: Solid dark green and white mixed. After Tokyo Prose’ successful entrance onto the scene with their ‘Introducing’ series creativity began to flow. A series of collaborations with numerous producers began and it was inevitable some of these would bare great results. Phil Tangent had one of the singles of 2010 for Marcus Intalex’ Soul:R label and was a perfect creative partner for the ideas charged Tokyo Prose. ‘Parity’ marries the pairs styles perfectly, with a euphoric vocal tempered by subtle gliding beats and bass. ‘Rearview’ is a sign of what Drum and Bass is missing in 2011. Smooth, deep and soulful music that reminds us again how powerfully emotive the genre can be. DJ support from Marcus Intalex, DJ Marky, Spectrasoul, Presha and more to come..

3024016 – Mosca – The Wavey EP – 12″ Vinyl
Throughout 3024′s short history, the label has always carried a heavy trace of techno in its makeup: an inevitable reflection of its founder’s roots in early 90s warehouse parties. Our 15th release bears that influence out, and stands as the label’s most expansive release so far – a 4 track EP from the utterly inimitable Mosca. Leaping straight onto our radar with his opening combination of the ‘Square One / Nike’ 12’ and ‘Gold Bricks, I See You,’ it’s been a long-held ambition to work with a producer whose diversity has never once strayed into tokenism. Renowned for his glacial work rate, we bided our time as the Mosca sound veered off into new territories – and it’s with great pleasure we present the fruits of our patience here. Opening proceedings of Mosca’s ‘Wavey’ EP is ‘Dom Perignon’, a cavernous roller with a gravity inverting bass drum and dub-infused atmospherics. Developing both the intricacy of its drum programming and the implicit tension of its arrangement towards the sunrise, it’s the perfect entry point for this new side of the Mosca sound. ‘Orange Jack’ further develops this gloaming swing, both deeper into the recesses of aquatic frequency while simultaneously ramping up the groove into ultra loose woodblock territory as looped snatches of Hip Hop acapella drive out any lingering ghost’s. Tearing any hint of historical reverence away is a constantly warping bass part that is more fissure than line, and bubbling textures hinting at further shifts to come. Immediately intensifying proceedings, ‘Jager’s renewed urgency guides the EP back towards more conventional Techno, in form if not implementation. Huge phased hi-hats and gaseous sub frequencies push a Friedrichshain pulse relentlessly forward, briefly collapsing as a disembodied fire & brimstone host exhorts an unidentified audience (or maybe the track) back onto its feet and onwards with yet more resolve. Coiling and uncoiling elements of the arrangement in this second half, a single electric piano chord makes its appearance, providing an understated link back to the previous 2 tracks’ roots. Available as a digital-only track, ‘Wray & Neph’ takes the component influences of its 3 vinyl bound siblings and fuses them together as the track both hardest to classify – and also the most classically Mosca sounding. Queasy waves of synth are joined by tight hi hats and a dislocated kick before a clipped percussive swing emerges out of the haze. Marrying a defiantly 8 bar-esque bass rumble and sporadic fizzing synth breaks with shifts back into stripped down 4×4 Motorik it encapsulates The Wavey EP and all its murky splendor. As ever, Erosie blesses 3024-016 with the latest sleeve in his ever evolving series of work for 3024, in the style that has defined the label as much as its A&R policy.

a Mosca – Dom Perignon
b1 Mosca – Orange Jack
b2 Mosca – Jager

CIV031 – Om Unit – Transport EP – 12″ Vinyl
Om Unit returns with ‘Transport’ a four track EP of blissful, instrumental, mechanical soul. Transport’s strength lies in the leeway afforded to the listener, rewarding patience and immersion, the EP allows those that truly engage to digest and appreciate it’s many qualities and those of it’s persistently excellent creator. Transport showcases both exceptional production and creative excellence, yet never does form displace method or vice versa. The eminence of ‘Transport’ is echoed in its remixers; revered producers Machinedrum and Ital Tek both contribute revisions to this astonishing package. Transport opens with ‘Swimming Dragon’. A rigid percussive structure underpins an array of howling synths that surround harmoniously before multiplying into a haunting cinematic workout. Then just as the listener is fully enclosed, Om Unit manipulates the flux and flow, teleporting you into another realm where low end frequencies and floating spatial atmospherics spin faster and draw ever tighter. The dream-like ‘Eternal Way’ continues in similar vein, heavenly vocal samples float on waves of skittering, energetic percussion. A poignant piano interjects, providing an enlightening succession that reinforces the enchanting ethereal nature of the track. ‘Vibrations’ contrasts a rough bassline and rounded percussion with the airy atmosphere that contains them. Imploding toms and lone delayed snares are the order of the day while a lazy bassline strolls over the top. Echoing, soulful synths overlap each other, reaching ever higher as the track climaxes. ‘Cold World’ enforces a swinging off-centre tempo, resonating, reflecting synths emerge, followed closely by modulated keys and glistening atmosphere. “Fuck the ghetto, think about space” Rounding up the package are 2 excellent remixes. Machinedrum delivers a footwork rework of ‘Vibrations’ that ups the energy levels and warps the bassline into a much darker, foreboding being. While Ital Tek adds sinister overtones to his take on ‘Swimming Dragon’. Calculated and ominous in it’s approach it loses none of the spacious atmospherics that are essential to the track. Captivating strings are added to the mix to create a well-rounded piece of ambitious proportions.

a1 Om Unit – Swimming Dragon
a2 Om Unit – An Eternal Way
b1 Om Unit – Vibrations
b2 Om Unit – Cold World

CIV032 – Drums Of Death – Red Waves EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following on from the dark atmosphere of ‘Black Waves’, Drums Of Death returns with the next in the sequence: ‘Red Waves’. Four tracks of ecstatic electronics displaying it’s makers love for techno and house music, all ramped up with big sounds and stripped back arrangements. ‘Tear The Box Apart’ opens the EP with marching snares rolling under a massive lead synth. Toms, snares and claps… the classic palette of the 808 drum machine is well covered but it’s the unique poly-rhythmic synth work and angular arrangements that set the track apart from those of retro-fetishists. Cheeky and fun, ‘The Jerk’ shows that simple elements do a big roller make. So addictive, it’s the bouncing bass and buzzing lead that drag you along. A UK Garage groove takes control whilst the hollowed out barrel toms go for the gut. ‘Venice Beach’ crafts bright chords that swirl and build. The infectious melody makes way for pitched bleeps and a towering ‘Reese’ bassline. Tested extensively in DoD’s frenzied live shows, ‘Venice Beach’ is the glowing, melodic heart at the centre of the adrenaline-fuelled ‘Red Waves’ collection. In ‘Bang The Drum’ Drums Of Death talks to us through a vocoder… “Just bang the drum and kill the noise, mute the synth and then the voice”. Hardly a ballad, this missive represents the newer Drums of Death sound… taught, electronic machine funk. Holding reverence for techno’s godfathers but also for it’s wayward children like Cristian Vogel, an elastic bassline lurches around rattling 909 hi-hats. ‘Bang The Drum’ rounds off a highly energetic EP that continues the ‘Waves’ odyssey of it’s composer.

a1 Drums Of Death – Tear The Box Apart
a2 Drums Of Death – The Jerk
b1 Drums Of Death – Venice Beach
b2 Drums Of Death – Bang The Drum

R1004 – R1 Ryders – Pole Position EP – 12″ Vinyl
R1 Ryders return with their fourth EP and final release of 2011; This four track EP takes you on an odyssey over the realms of Funkitek. Continuing in the same vain of previous releases, R1 Ryders shift up a gear and never before has Funkitek sounded so vigorous and developed. The lead track “Mars” takes you on a journey to the red planet, sounding imperious and bossy with a controlled flavour of assertiveness. “Mars” shrewdly combines versatility with a sense of freedom ensuring it lives up to its title. Bass heavy stabs, energetic beats and that unforgettable breakdown make this track a sure fire dance floor banger that will work for a wide range of DJ’s across the galaxy and beyond. The second track “Deep In The Jungle” is reminiscent of a late night adrenaline fuelled high speed chase through the depths of the Jungle that leads to stunning views of the horizon in the distance. Elements of Jungle, house, dubstep and techno make this a Funkitek dancefloor destroyer. “All Nite” takes you back to the warehouse raves of the 90′s and conjures up the feelings of yesteryear with its smooth and subtle arrangement. The Tecnho-esque kick that pulsates throughout the track carries ravers all night and into the morning and until night is more. The final track on the EP, “Basswave” is a forward thinking cheeky number, with its wild whirlwind bass, crazy carnival stabs and rolling percussion, rounding off the EP in fine style.

New D&B CD

MJAZZLP04 – Various – The Modernists 2 CD – CD
The CD album is strictly limited to 100 hand finished copies, so certainly something for the collectors. Tony Justice’s MJazz label has come good with the second instalment on it’s limited CD series. “The Modernists 2” brings together an international selection of new skool artists laced together with techno and electronic influences… The project boasts several producers who’s names are practically buzz words in contemporary deep drum & bass. “Reklas” by Berlin’s Felix K is a personal favorite of ours, incorporating a relentless white noise-esque snare with deep sub bass and tense stabs. Also deserving a special metion is relative newcomer Dominick Ridgeway’s “My Reflection”, minimal by definition, subtle and cinematic by character. Justice & Metro’s “Sounds Like Something” takes the listener firmly away from the dancefloor and straight into the future dystopia of a city landscape that would be at home in Bladerunner, stripping away the beats and focussing on some seriously synthed out keys and pads.

CF044 – Quadrant – Dermaphoria EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy promo. Some producers are just so underrated that it makes you sick. Quadrant is a formation that’s been around since 2005 and has released tracks on prestigious labels like Renegade Hardware, Citrus, Fokuz to name a few. The quality of their output is extraordinarily crisp and original that it’s hard not to notice them, this Dermaphoria EP is exactly that. And as allways this Quadrant release comes with a sexy cover by designer ‘MESK’ State Of Mind gets in on a remix for Rage & Rapture and stretches the trance vibe out and adds their signature SOM tech sound.. Didi’s vocals stay intact and sound even more lush as they did before soaring over the beats like a bird above the clouds. ‘A Healthy Distrust’ is on the flip and this one is one to be noticed. Its minimal melancholic vibe is dark and ominous and will suck you in straight away. Heavy big kicks haunt the track like the drums of a voodoo witchdoctor in the jungle. Its spacious vibe is dreamy and eerie at the same time. Keep on your guard and pay attention to this one. Disc 2 holds ‘The Stars Are Bleeding’ Quadrant shows here at what their best at. Sounding like the cry of a 1000 angels falling from heaven. Beautiful and sad at the same time and sending chills down your spine and back up again. The bass line rolls underneath like a bed of feathers giving hope but the outcome is not certain. Citrus saves the best for last and that is of course the title track ‘Dermaphoria’. Quadrant shows there’s a brighter side and makes sure you know it with this uplifting funker. When this one hits standing still is not an option, the bass line will sweep you of your feet in no time and shoot you into the Dermaphoria Quadrant. 0 Gravity beats and sweeps are coming at you at all sides so you are warned!

RDR002 – Shameboy / Buscemi – Strobot – NETSKY rmx / Seaside – KG rmx – 12″ Vinyl
Murdock’s Radar Records launches an entirely new project, backed by some of the biggest names in drum&bass. Remixing a gang of classic Belgian non-dnb tracks by the likes of T99, Sound of Stereo, The Subs, Outlander and many more, they kick off the series with massive drum&bass reworks by none other than Netsky and KG. Drum & Bass’ new poster boy / boy wonder Netsky steps to the plate with the awesomeness that is his version of Shameboy’s classic electro banger ‘Strobot’, which was the first tune in his BBC Radio1 Essential Mix and has had a lot of exposure worldwide, as his Mix was voted 3rd best Essential Mix of the year 2010! The track has had spins by Andy C, Danny Byrd, Camo & Krooked and many more. KG ripped up Buscemi’s laidback house classic ‘Seaside’ and turned it into a dancefloor stomper. Opening with funky licks and classic breaks, he quickly rolls into a big jump-up monster, while still adding some vocals and rhodes piano for good measure. This one is being caned by Bassline Smith, Hamilton and Zen, to name just a few. Next up in the Radar Remixes series are contributions by Nymfo, Blame, Crystal Clear, Break, Marky & SPY and many more, so keep your eyes and ears pealed!

DOT004 – Duffstep – Getting to Sirius – CD
Limited edition gapless audio CD. Until now Duffstep has been hidden in the seedy undergrowth of London always disguised, clandestine, covert, forever plotting his imminent escape. This bid for freedom then is called ‘Getting to Sirius’. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, in Ancient Greek times Sirius was said to mark the beginning of summer, where women became aroused and men became weak. The gods screamed for glory and the crowd screamed one more. Duffstep’s debut album ‘Getting to Sirius’ is a heady potion laced with influences of dub and down tempo beats, winding through layers of melody and synths whilst vocals soften the blow providing a nice, warm and fuzzy edge to the thick slabs of sonic concrete. Though you won’t have to wait before a nice big bass-line knocks you down on your arse again. It’s a migration then from early morning blissful sweeps and sonic washes. It is the soul of rave, it is it’s long dead cousin come back to haunt it. It is the sound rave makes when it re-enters the earth’s atmosphere. It isn’t a simple re-working of what has been showcased in recent live outings, it is more contemplative; unlike his more recent outings it is less aimed at the dance-floor and is instead a more, down-tempo, relaxed affair. Aside from travelling to Sirius on weekends, Duffstep can also be found sharing a stage with some of the biggest names in electronic music, Flying Lotus, Pinch, Martyn, Commix, Ramadanman, Pariah and Kode 9 to name a few. As well as teaming up alongside Rebel Overlay one of the VJ scenes brightest assets, Duffstep has begun touring a massive live show that is set to be unveiled from Timbuktu to Teignmouth. Accompanying the debut LP will be 3 remix EP’s straddling the realms of dubstep, house and disco from an ever emerging pool of old and new guard. Remixes split across both digital and vinyl include re-tellings from FaltyDL, Elliphino and Young Montana? On the dub orientated EP with Mark E, Session Victim and Riley Reinhold, Loose fit, Social Monster and Duffstep’s Thursday night drag act alter-ego Duff Disco taking things to house and disco dancefloors. With original material, remix EPs, a debut album and an ever growing touring schedule, Duffstep is going to be hard to ignore in 2011.

DISF011 – Instra:mental / Von D & Riskotheque – Voyeur / Like A Bird – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Skream’s label rounds of 2010 with a classic release. Its not often a gem like this comes along and its no surprise that fellow production collaborator Skream picked it up for his Disfigured Dubz imprint. Having been a regular floor filler over the past year within the emerging techno x dubstep scene, ‘Voyeur’ has been in high demand and finally sees the light of day to many peoples delight. It was one of Instra:mentals first dabbles with the 4/4 structure but has the maturity and qualities of a rediscovered 90s classic. Lazy robo beats set the tone for a slurred vocal that sounds like a drunken tourist in a red light district. At the same time, spacey atmospheres build in the background until they reach a peak and fade away into screaming stabs that get the crowd going mental. Expect to hear this for many years to come and could possibly reach classic status. Next up we have the AA side from upcoming artists Von D and Riskotheque. With their jazz/soul fueled take on Dubstep they’re building their own little niche within the scene and are sure to shine this year. ‘Like a bird’ mixes old skool vocal snippets, lurching fizzy mids and Detroit style stabs to create this monster that Skream and his fellow Djs have been rinsing to full effect over the last couple of months. A perfect balance of musical prowess and heavyweight beats and bass, this tune covers all angles nicely.

NONPLUSLP002PART1 – LOL – LOL Part 1 – 12″ Vinyl
lol is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one) They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

PIPS014 – Orphan101 – Propa / Disemble – 12″ Vinyl
Apple Pips is proud to present another original new talent from the Bristol bass underground – Orphan101. Having cut his teeth on Bristol pirate radio with Headhunter aka Addison Groove, Orphan101 surfaced earlier this year with some promising releases on Saigon and his own Decarhythm label, one of several new labels in Bristol (along with If Symptoms Persist, Idle Hands, & Subdepth) to be pushing a varied and seemingly boundary less take on bass music. A residency at the Apple Pips nights in Bristol allowed him to road test his beats and it’s here that Appleblim heard the awesome rolling 2-step-meets-Carl Craig-in-a-Bristol-soundclash track that is ‘Propa’. With skippy garage beats, a bleeped out intro, and the deepest sub-bass this side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, you need to hear this track on a system. It hurts! On the flip ‘Disemble’ takes us on a journey through his vision of minimal techno, in a dubstep context, with scratchy percussion rubbing up against twisted Ed & Optical ‘Wormhole’ era bass spasms. Having just come from playing at Fabric for Apple Pips takeover, things are looking great in 2011 for Orphan101. Early DJ/Radio support already coming from Mark Pritchard (Warp/Harmonic 313/Afrika Hi Tech), Instra:mental (Non-plus/Swamp81), Addison Groove, 2562 (Tectonic), Laurent Garnier, Angel Molina (Tresor) & more

DOT003 – Duffstep – Getting To Sirius Remix EP #1 – 12″ Vinyl
Like the joining of ancient clans or the marriage of Marie Antoinette to Louis of France the joining of the Duff brothers is something of a historical milestone. Since birth the Duff’s have gone their separate ways, one getting down on the worlds hipper dancefloors, hips-awiggling, head thrown back in rapture and all under a spinning disco ball. The other brother the troubled teen, hood up, eyes down, bass rumbling, one time selecta. Imagine then two estranged brothers, born from the same seed living awkwardly side by side, never entirely comfortable in each other’s company finally uniting on one massive inbred slab of sonic harmony. If you can imagine that slightly cack-handed analogy then that is pretty much what you get here. After a year of huge edits and original material Duff Disco has finally gone and had a fiddle with his brother? Both taken from the forthcoming Duffstep album ‘Getting To Sirius’, ‘Your Touch’ and ‘Backseat’ are original Duffstep tracks given a cosmic make over by Duff Disco. They are proper modern disco music that sits just the right side of funky, without conjuring images of fluffy boots and spiky hair, white shirts and fake tan. Whilst Backseat is the more euphoric of the two Your Touch is more moody than an emo teenager watching Twighlight. Both obviously Duff Disco but somehow keeping the family together as Duffstep’s finger prints are all over these too.

SPEAKS003 – Sekta – Liquid Tek EP – 12″ Vinyl
No doubt looking for somewhere with a bit of political stability and a brighter economic future, 24 year old Polish producer Jan Dudzik aka Sekta recently joined many of his compatriots by leaving London and farking off back to his native Warsaw. Luckily, he left us a bottle of the finest vodka to remember him by, and a four track EP of stepping rhythms, fat bass and dubby atmospherics to help wash it down. Lead track ‘Liquid Tek’combines deep pads, pulsing subs, metallic riffs and broken beats into a floor friendly, but contemplative post dubstepper. Similar elements are combined in “ I Need’ , with a sliver of vocal adding an extra layer to the musical equation. ‘Hakka Riddim’ takes things a bit heavier, coiling beefy synth stabs around it’s insistent rhythms , and employing a spacey string interlude to break things up along the way. Closing track ‘Deep in the Woods’ takes the trace of D n B textures that run through the EP and lets loose, with full on, chopped up Amen breaks accompanying futuristic pads, robo-synths and occasional flourishes of cinematic strings that hint of Easter European nostalgia.

New Bass Music Promos

NOMIC005 – They Live – Pure Palms / Don’t Know What To Say – 12″ Vinyl
The first release for Consequence and Joe Seven’s new alias ‘They Live’ is on dBridge & Instra:mental’s Autonomic label. Creeping in with a slightly haunting melody and sparse drums, ‘Pure Palms’ starts off with little indication of where the track might lead; it feels as though it could go in any direction. As it slowly builds, the warmth and weight – and deep-set rhythms – that Consequence is known for begin settling, and open up to an evocative, widescreen track of immense beauty. They Live’s musicality comes through strong throughout the detailed turnings of the downtempo masterpiece, with immersive low-end fills and intricate percussion that take all headphones hostage. ‘Don’t Know What To Say’ brings a darker edge, with crackling sound effects and an ominous, spine-chilling bassline that creates intense and intriguing dynamics. As a solemn melody builds, once again They Live bring a cinematic feel to the dense, ever-growing atmosphere. Brooding with textured sounds, skyscraping synths and head-nodding beats, the mesmerizing track shows huge promise of what’s to come from the powerful duo.

DP049 – KGB – Ghetto Blasta 2010 / Hands Up – 12″ Vinyl
Estonian duo KGB step up for their debut release on Dub Police and they certainly aren’t pulling any punches. The production partnership hit you with two cuts of pure dance floor energy and impact that display their versatility and uncanny knowledge of how to get a crowd going. If you don’t know about KGB, you better get to know, as they are quickly establishing themselves as one of the rising stars in underground dance music. With plenty of tricks up their sleeves, there will be no stopping them in 2011! ‘Ghetto Blaster 2010’ draws upon different elements of underground bass music and melds them together in to something entirely unique and undeniably infectious. Taking the growling midrange bass-weight of dubstep and wiring it to a militant UK Funky drum march, KGB give the track an unstoppable momentum and punishing impact that is impossible to fight against – With an artillery that includes fire like this, it is no wonder they are quickly paving their path to the top. On the flipside, KGB deliver something very different. Pinned down by the tough half-step drum pattern, ‘Hands Up’ is all about the maniacal intertwining bass lines. When this track drops there is no denying its fierce, in-your-face power.

RS1006RMX – Model 500 – OFI (Space Dimension Controller & Bullion Remxes) – 12″ Vinyl
Model 500 returned triumphantly to R&S in 2010, with their first release for the label in eleven years, and the first with the new line up of Juan Atkins, Mike Banks and Mark Taylor. They found themselves label mates with some of the finest young electronic producers working in music today, and back on a rejuvenated label that was making the top ten labels of the year lists from the likes of Fact, XLR8R, RA, Juno and Bleep. It makes total sense that the lead track from the OFI ep is handed over to two amazing young producers to reinterpret it in their own unique ways. Bullion made his name with the internet sensation Songs In The Key Of Dee release which blended The Beach Boys and Dilla into a hip hop masterpiece. Recently he’s released the You Drive Me To Plastic ‘non LP’ on Young Turks, which has cemented him as true auteur of the sampler. His rivertrance remix of OFI is simply amazing. How he’s turned the classic Detroit electro of the original into a twisted, psychedelic symphony that laughs in the face of genres, without losing the Model 500 feel, god only knows, but we’re glad he has. Space Dimension Controller returns to the label after releasing his critically acclaimed Temporary Thrillz doublepack. He’s the perfect remixer choice, another space obsessed producer, working on analogue gear and singing on his own tracks like Juan has done since the Cybotron days. SDC replaces Juan’s vocals for his own on his evasive funk mix, keeping the tempo of the original intact, but taking things deeper in his signature style. This single effortly merges the R&S heritage with the forward thinking electronic music of 2011 perfectly, and is a bold statement of intent for the new year.

LIME004 – Jade & Matt-U – Echoes – 12″ Vinyl
Lime Dubz keep on cracking with another too hot to handle release.. The long time duo Jade & Matt-U are reunited once again but not for getting back to their dnb roots. No Jade teams up with Matt-U for some highly technical Dubstep sounds.. Grindhouse on Jade’s Venom LP was just a taster of what was to come.. With Grindhouse still freshly engraved into our memories it’s time to unleash it on vinyl.. But now with 2 brand spanking new heavyweights on there.. Echoes is a sinister roller that’s all over the place bouncing left right up and down there’s no defending against this monster track.. Instead of going all tear out they crossover to a more medi hybrid sound that will suit well with Dubsteppers of all ages.. The last new track on the 12 is Pump. You guys are thinking it.. and we can confirm.. Yes this is a bass line monster if there ever was one. Grab all of your PA’s boys and girls and turn up the volume to max cause its only happening when your chest starts rattlin..

THIN16 – Funckarma – Dubstoned 5 EP – 12″ Vinyl
As we’ve been stalking the Funckens for ten years now, after stumbling upon their parts series on DUB when we were still students, trekking religiously to the Sirius on weekends, eventually spending nights in bus shelters to assist to half a live in a school that only served wine, and trying to organise a bash with them in a squat that burned down a week before the bash, before finally inviting them to an exhibition closing party that incidentally marked the beginning of Thin Consolation, they seemed an obvious choice for a release for the tenth anniversary of UNREzT and the fifth of Thin Consolation. Having already graced Thin Consolation with an album in 2006 as Dif:use (with long-time partner Cor Bolten), this time we requested from them a 12″ of a more step-ish inspiration, the fifth in the Dubstoned series, the previous editions having been released on Highpoint Lowlive, Ad Noiseam and Eat Concrete. In so many words, the Dubstoned series is the last major electronic musical genre to have appeared – Dubstep – to be given the special Funcken treatment: a dark and brooding, dub-flavoured electronica. Not for the faint hearted. Mepeche is co-produced by Phinx, and Spectrum is a remix of a track by Eedl, released on the album ‘Everse’, on the Barcelona-based label spa.RK.

RWINA011 – Swindle – Playground – 12″ Vinyl
London grime producer Swindle follows up his incredible Planet Mu EP with another slab of funked-up grime, this time for a rapidly expanding Rwina Records. Swindle’s return marks a slightly stripped-down sound: the funk is meaner, heavier, and nastier. ‘Playground’ grooves on rainbow synths and leisurely, drawn-out melodies, as a boogie bassline carves memorable phrases in the ground below. All of this is shoved in an approachable halfstep template that means the track could just as easily slot into any dubstep set as the grime scene in which Swindle dominates. Did we mention there’s a killer freestyling organ solo in the breakdown? On the b-side, we’re treated to a monstrous remix of SRC’s Rwina anthem ‘Goin Out,’ where that track’s quick and vibrant skip is slowed right down to a trickling drawl. The brusque melodic motifs of the original are flattened out into irresistibly squiggling melodic tangents, and the whole thing is given a muscular makeover that turns the 8-bit funk into lifelike grime. The beats are beefed up — Mario’s emphatic ‘ohs’ hit with every beat like he’s in pain — and the track’s bubble and boil over uncontrollably, a volatile concoction that recklessly sends out unforgettable melodic hooks in all directions. The EP ends with the softer ‘Who’s Quicker’ — which simultaneously speaks to old (and I mean old)-school grime with its barebones percussion breathy samples, but its heads-down meditative bassline speaks to the more reflective side of dubstep. With the Playground EP on Rwina, Swindle reveals what you already knew: that he’s an immensely talented and versatile producer on the top of the grime scene, applying a wide-ranging set of appealing influences to a template that hits home for both grime and dubstep fans. That it comes on Rwina is no surprise: a great producer deserves an equally great label.

RISE021 Mindless – Trei Uprising Records 12″ Vinyl
Stylistically inhabiting a musical landscape populated with driving jump-up drum breaks, angular melodic synthesiser patterns and driving pulse-like bass lines, as a musical entity TREi is a genuine composer and artist. An individual capable of easily dispelling the knob-twiddling computer programmer connotations far too often associated with the more throwaway aspects of dance music. Dose is fast proving himself as not only one of New Zealand’s leading solo drum & bass artist’s but one of the rising stars of the drum & bass scene world wide. Dose’s productions cover a wide range of the drum & bass spectrum, from the harder hitting edge to the softer, deeper and more melodic side in which his dj sets portray. Dose’s tunes have been picked up and supported by a wide range of established international artist such as Break, Friction, Survival, Shimon, State of Mind, The Upbeats and many more.

APHA003 Dust Ball / The Trunk – Fracture & Neptune Astrophonica 12″ Vinyl
Fracture and Neptune are back this month with another killer release on their own Astrophonica label. They first released back in 2001 on the infamous Droppin’ Science label, which still influences and shapes their sound. In September 2009 they decided to unleash their own label, a label that is about pushing the boundaries and broadening the dimensions of D&B, so much so they already have support from fans such as Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin and DJ Food. With the re-emergence of D&B and the huge creative capacity this is the ideal time for a label with such genre-pushing potential. This is the third instalment and is a sign that the label is getting stronger and stronger with each release. “Dust Ball” and “The Trunk” have received heavy play across the DnB scene with top DJs such as Doc Scott, DBridge, Marcus Intalex, Zero T and Jubei caning both tracks. “Dust Ball” was also featured on Loxy’s CX11 podcast. Support has also come from outside the DnB scene with DJs such as Laurent Garnier loving this release. The vinyl version of this release was 100% manufactured in the UK and pressed at the legendary Ex-EMI plant ‘The Vinyl Factory’ on high quality 140grm vinyl. This plant uses old presses from the EMI golden days so who knows what other classic records have been pressed before Astrophonica? The organic textures of ‘Dust Ball’ develop over a back bone of tight, snappy beats and an ever evolving bassline while ‘The Trunk’ sees the duo fuse tough 80s drum machines with edgy science fiction atmospheres and heavy low-end to create a paranoid stepper for the floor. Ewan Cook (iDJ Magazine – May 2010 – 8/10 Recommended) “Dust Ball shows the pair have been hunkering down at the nu-skool trough in style, its peak/morph filterings, warpish breaks and this soup of reverbed analogue goodness doing the seriously wonky, chunky damage. Do not miss.”

HUMA8029 Planet Human / Flux – SPKTRM Human Imprint 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Over the past several years, Raphael Johnson AKA SPKTRM has become widely acknowledged as one of the most upcoming producers in the American drum & bass scene. Following his debut release in 2006, he was picked up by some of the scene’s heaviest hitters; including Dieselboy’s Human Imprint Recordings, Evol Intent Recordings, Barcode Recordings and Gein’s imprint Habit Recordings among others; and a strong set of releases (both forthcoming and current) were signed immediately. Always evolving, SPKTRM’s sound has undoubtedly gone through quite the transformation. Today, his productions range from hard hitting, dancefloor steppers to dark, sinister broken beat chaos; and lately his fascination with the fusion of deeper drum & bass vibes with elements of traditional funk and jazz. The only thing that surpasses his production style in diversity is his live shows. SPKTRM has been known to incorporate everything from the harshest of breaks and sub sonic basslines to the smooth, airy sounds of soul infused liquid drum & bass into his sets. During the summer of 2009, he took part in the first wave of the heavy metal inspired concept tour, Monsters of Jungle; alongside such artists as Dieselboy, The Upbeats, Demo, Ewun, Infiltrata, Mayhem and Evol Intent (The crew is expected to reunite in 2010 to complete a full length North American tour). Most recently, SPKTRM has linked up with Los Angeles based producer Gridlok, and is working on tunes for his infamous Project 51 Recordings. He also has additional releases lined up for the new year, as well as remixes and collaborations with the likes of Gein, Demo, Joanna Syze and Dieselboy to name a few. Through constant and tireless work, SPKTRM is rapidly making a well established name for himself; and is an act not to be missed.

DARKESTRALG001C Down With You / Higher – Pearson Sound Darkestral Galaxicos 12″ Vinyl
Limited to 500 copies 12” orange vinyl. Sleeve will have the extra varnish layer on the darker logos including the logo on the back. Printed on reverse card (uncoated card) with Pantone colour and spot varnish. Ushering in a new project for Darkestral (Galaxicos), Pearson Sound aka Ramadanman gradually opens out a warmly shimmering pad over delicate percussion track that glows over an undercurrent of soft bass propulsion, and makes explicit an emotive, hazy, laidback vibe for the ensuing long summer days ahead on the delightful ‘Down With You’. Like drowning in a velveteen cloud, ‘Down With You’ describes a place or a state of being that feels wholly desirable. ‘Higher’ alternatively takes you in different directions at the same time, personal, pastoral, dreamlike, imaginary.. summer again but with a ratchet rhythm that keeps you wide eyed at this environment of fantastical scenery he has created. At once tripped out and hallucinatory but with a relaxed and childlike sense of play. As featured on the FabricLive50 Autonomic compilation.

SUBTLE014 2nd Rate – Polska Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. This is the vinyl installment of the “2nd Rate” project by Irish producer Polska. These tracks are slightly more dancefloor orientated than those on his 2xCD long player of the same name but it’s still perfect for those who prefer the meditative side of electronic music. Opening with atmospheric strains, “Setplace” is an incendiary piece of breakbeat D&B that alternates between darkness and light throughout. The constantly changing arrangement, sharp percussives and wandering bassline patterns keep your attention. Flip over for a special remix of Polska’s “Outvert” by king of the beats, Equinox. The stop / start nature of the original is transformed into a more rugged, rolling affair here which gets more adventurous and cut-up as it progresses. Sweet pads, strings and vocal snatches compliment the beats and the deep sub bass completes a real ‘rough with the smooth’ masterpiece. The third track “2nd Rate” also features on the CD version of this release and evokes images of a live jazz quartet on stage rather than a producer in a studio! The progression from nice-n-easy jazz to D&B onslaught half way through makes this tune an epic journey. Polska is coming from a different angle to most producers at the moment but this is certainly a refreshing take on the Drum & Bass sound.

The A Side see’s Lutin showing us his trademark heavy bass sound matched with some tearing synth action before the tune switches up into a nasty pitched reese bass. The flip side brings fast rising new producer HLZ back to 36 Hertz after his first release appeared on the massive ‘Back To The Bass’ LP. With a half speed synth lead intro that builds up into pure bass mayhem after the drop HLZ once again shows he is a man of many styles.

Bone crunching beats paired with haunting vocals set the scene for the a side, rolling yet tuff breaks and a booming low freq bassline will rip the speakers apart and cause massive distress to your eardrums!! The flip kicks of with steal toe capped beats which flow to the break down then the drop comes in and smashes the place as the monsterous distorted baseline tears through your chest!!!!

IDLE003 Basic Music Knowledge – Kowton Idle Hands 12″ Vinyl
“After the well received ‘Countryman’ & ‘Stasis (G-Mix)’ 12″ for Blackdown’s ‘Keysound’ imprint Kowton returns with his first release of 2010; this time for the Bristol based label ‘Idle Hands’. Set up last year from the back room of the Rooted Records, the label aims to showcase the best in raw, grooving and experimental electronic music with a particular focus on the UK underground. Having picked up lots of interest Online
Kowton is ready to make his mark in 2010, following features in RA, Fact Magazine and Blackdown’s own blog. The two tracks selected for the release: ‘Basic Music Knowlege’ & ‘Hunger’ operate in the musical middle ground between the darkly swung garage of El-B and the dubstep pioneers, and the submerged techno sound of STL and New World Aquarium. DJ and radio support has so far come from Appleblim, Mary Anne Hobbs, 2562 and Kevin Gorman, amongst others.

SCREW002 Mind Over Matter / Cataract – Statix Screwloose Records 12″ Vinyl
Introducing Statix. To put it simply, dubstep’s answer to Bad Company. Quite a title? With distinctive records such as ‘Mind Over Matter’ & ‘Purgatory’ shredding their way through the dubstep scene, it’s one that is definitely justified. Radio plays from the likes of Caspa, Rusko & Crissy Criss followed a ‘mini-mix’ request on the infamous Mary Anne Hobbs Radio 1 show. The spotlight was significantly placed on ‘Mind Over Matter’ which even featured on Mary Anne Hobbs’ U.S tour blog, beside the likes of Chase & Status, Joker & Plactician. ‘Mind Over Matter’ was then chosen to be released on one of the most exciting and contemporary record labels to emerge from 2009, ‘Screwloose Records’ where it would join highly desired up and coming releases from the likes of KOAN Sound & Asa. Perhaps the best thing about Statix is the fact that the talent doesn’t stop at the loading screen for Reason 4.0. Word of mouth alone established Statix high on the bills of several nights in their home town of Bristol. Why? A well coordinated approach to live performances coupled with superb DJ skills and jaw dropping MC talent. Even with the somewhat dark sound the group can unleash through a sound-system, the future is most definitely bright for Statix. And with a live band in the works, things are about to go from sick, to slick.

ISP003 A Night on the Wonk – Wedge and Aesoteric If Symptoms Persist 12″ Vinyl
‘A Night on the Wonk’ is on an experimental tip with highly addictive horn and chime hooks. The Gemmy remix takes the chime section, gives it some of the well known purple treatment and turns it into a highly distinctive but slightly sickly intro. I say sickly but that’s perhaps because I’ve listened to it a lot of times in a fairly short period of time. However we’re then treated to a bleepy roller with moderate variation to keep things interesting. This makes it perfect for an early set or casual listening. ‘Detached Reality’ crackles its way through some haunting vocals and evil guitar riffs creating a tense but soothing atmosphere – detaching you from reality, sinking you into your seat while your mind starts to play tricks with itself. What are we really here for?

KAP005 Tron – Joker Kapsize 12″ Vinyl
Limited edition pressing featuring Tron on one side and artwork Etching on the other. The new single “Tron” All eyes are on Joker for his next move, having created havoc on dancefloors all over the world last year with huge remixes for numerous major labels/acts and anthems such as ‘Digidesign’, ‘Do It’ and ‘Purple City”. He has defined the colourful synth-led melodic style within dubstep that’s become known as ‘Purple w0w’. ‘Tron’ is his biggest tune yet. It’s a rare piece of music that can unite a diverse range of DJs such as Diplo, Kode 9, Shy FX, Flying Lotus, TC, Caspa, Pinch… it’s got an illicit feeling of funk that Dr. Dre would have to admire. You want to nod down low to it, you want to move in slow motion to it, you want to ride one of those cars from F-Zero to it. taken from:

RWINA007 Goin Out EP – SRC Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
Fresh from Birmingham comes young talent SRC delivering the ‘Goin Out EP’ for the Rwina imprint. Stuffing old school 8-bit sensibilities and new school Grime attitude into a blender and hitting puree, SRC slings sizzling synths and punchy basslines with devastating effect. With all this in mind, SRC makes the case that he’s one to watch for the future, and with a workrate to match the hype, you can expect a lot more where this came from! RS1003 CMYK EP – James Blake R&S Records 12″ Vinyl
Debut single for another hugely tipped young London based producer on the legendary R&S record label, showcasing that the label is once again a serious force to be reckoned with. James Blake is making some of the most startlingly original music to have emerged from London in 2010 and is a real star in the making. In between studying Popular Music at Goldsmiths and writing a debut album that will take a lot of people by surprise, he has released amazing singles on Hemlock & Hessle, pushing the boundaries of what is expected of ‘dubstep’ music. This underground introduction has made him a star on influential blogs and websites and has now pricked up the ears of more mainstream press. With features to be published before the release of this EP in Dazed & Confused, NME and Pitchfork. CMYK is a club anthem in the making and one of the most in demand tracks on the dubstep scene. The further three tracks take a more introspective approach, and aren’t strictly aimed at the dancefloor, but are equally heavy tracks that drip with funk and reveal themselves fully after repeated listens. New Dubstep / Funky / Techno Promos

SWAMPLP001 One Of Us – Kryptic Minds Swamp 81 12″ Vinyl x 3
Limited edition Vinyl pressing with A1 poster. Back in May of 2009, Blackdown posted an in-depth interview with Kryptic Minds and Loefah, breaking down how Loefah started his Swamp81 They spoke at length about the parallels between DnB and dubstep, especially from a label-sound point. Well, at the end of this month, you can own what’s sure to be one of the scene’s more captivating releases to date. What I want to push with Swamp 81 is the gap that isn’t really being represented anymore. The roller, the halfstep… spacious.” What Loefah heard in those first few Kryptic Minds beats is edgy, rolling, stripped back spacious dubstep that was spectacularly well made and also had its own identity– emotive, organic in places, very junglist in spirit– unlike the vast number of producers who tried to clone his sound in 2006, and failed. The first fruits of the partnership are Kryptic Mind’s “One of Us”, a deadly 12″ that encapsulates producers who understand the difference between edgy and too angry; that restraint often has more impact than chaotic release. This deft understanding of the tensions and contradictions buried within dubstep, and how you use them is played out yet further on their new album, “I’m thinking Wax Doctor, Doc Scott, Goldie– that kind of thing. It’s that transitional phase between Reinforced and Headz that is in my heart” explains Loefah. “That’s what I’d like to do with Swamp. And I don’t want it to be labelled as ‘the halfstep label.’ I want it to have that kind of tunnel vision Metalheadz had in 1996, that kind of ‘we’re going this way. I’m not watching what you’re doing, I’m not watching what you’re doing– I’m going straight ahead.’” In that spirit, Kryptic Minds’ One of Us zooms in on edgy 140bpm halfstep, forcing the listener into a headspace where perfectly placed details come into vivid focus, like the hyper-real intensity of night adrenalin. Everything is tautly coiled, as if priming the listener for a flight-or-fight reflex. The tension is barely unleashed throughout the album. “To me the album– and this may be really gushy,” enthuses Loefah, “it’s like a night out. Leaving the house or wherever you are, going through the night and the last track is morning. The sun’s come up and it’s time for bed.” “I think the Kryptic Minds album and the 12″,” concludes Loefah, “it’s just making a bit of a statement. We’re saying ‘you know what? It’s not this, it’s not that, we’re right in the middle and we’re headstrong with it.

DP039 My 808’s / Turf W*rz – Matty G Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Matthew Gonsalves, known as Matty G to the world of music, is a pioneer of the US dubstep scene. Since his debut release on the Argon imprint in 2006, Matty has ceaselessly pushed his unique brand of hip hop inspired, 808 bass workouts, that have been destroying clubs the world over. His 2007 release ‘50, 000 Watts’ shook up the scene with its stripped down breaks and punishing subs, finding its way into the bag of just about every DJ worth his salt, becoming something of an instant classic. Its profound influence on the scene is still being felt today, and it has become one of those tracks that people are still searching Discogs to get hold of, at any price. His 2008 LP, ‘Take You Back,’ cemented his placing in the flourishing dubstep scene, exploring his diverse musical influences and amalgamating the sounds of hip hop, funk, soul, reggae and jungle into a 140bpm template. It still remains one of the most accomplished albums to have been made in the scene. After linking up with Dub Police head honcho Caspa, who remixed his massive ‘West Coast Rocks’ for Argon, he has recently officially joined the Dub Police crew, the fruits of which we will see over the coming months.

RNG010 Jays Reese / The Intro – L.D vs Clue Kid Ringo Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. A strand emerging within dubstep is a mutant jungle strain within the sound. Needless to say, it’s impossible to imagine dubstep without the DNA of jungle: it’s prominent in so many ways and places, from Burial’s Foul Play influences to Loefah’s love of the sound itself. Members of the scene used to DJ jungle, from N Type and Kode9 to Jason, Transition’s mighty mastering engineer. In fact the whole “dark” component that makes dubstep distinct from UK garage has its roots in El-B’s twin love of Metalheadz and 2step. Jungle is less an influence on dubstep, more like the foundation on which the whole scene, via garage, was built. But in spite of all that, a re-emphasis on jungle-flavored dubs is emerging within dubstep; songs that use chopped breaks, epic pads, and vocal samples like it was 1994, from producers LD and Cluekid. by Martin Clark

EAR014 Maroon Chant / Late For Athens – Gemmy Earwax 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. BIG BIG BIG BIG ! ! ! ! Earwax is very proud to present this huge 12” from ‘Purple Trinity’ producer Gemmy, guaranteed to cause serious sonic pressure on a dancefloor near you! ‘Maroon Chant’ is possibly one of Gemmy’s biggest tunes yet, a carefully crafted dancefloor monster brim with catchy purple melodic synths and heavy weight bass. The intro leads in with a looped tribal chant as the pattern is sucked into rolling snapping percussion before the squelching, ever-evolving bassline drops. The track build and flows effortlessly maintaining high energy levels throughout. Big tune. Flip then for ‘Last 3 Digits’ – the title being a reference to pirate radio shows where the host refers to callers by the last 3 digits of their phone number. “Let me have 1 caller for the rewind”.
Heavy hitting rave stabs punch out the catchy melody here before the track switches up into a grimey beat and even grimier bassline. Quality rave music.

DBOOT010 Hello Lonely, Hold The Nation – Downliners Sekt Disboot 12″ Vinyl
‘Hello Lonely, Hold the nation’ is the long awaited new release by enigmatic bass-tronauts, Downliners Sekt. Leaving aside the post rock, industrial leanings of their critically acclaimed predecessor, ‘The Saltire Wave’, the group lays out a subsonic adventure through haunting melodies and phantasmic soul. Teaming with Barcelonan bass music pioneers Disboot, this release offers one of the most progressive discs of electronic music emanating from Western Europe. Already pushing the limits of dubstep, grime and contemporary bass music before they were officially ‘baptized’, Downliners Sekt pick up the race where they left off with their ‘Statement of Purpose’ LP. ‘Hello Lonely, Hold the Nation’ combines fine sonic manipulation with the ingenious song craft they have honed throughout a varied musical history. Crushing your white Ipod headphones into the dust, this work of high end hiss, shuffling textural rhythms and rumbling bass threatens to destroy even the heaviest sound systems. This new beast is their own niche of bass music, a style of working they like to call ‘slower, but faster’. This, their fifth release, marks the return of Downliners Sekt to 12″ vinyl format, 6 years after their first EP (for b: cuts), The Pledge, which was later released for the F Communications ‘Megasoft Office’ compilation. As the 11th release for Iberian bass pioneers Disboot, ‘Hello Lonely, Hold The Nation’ is an exciting new chapter in their potent catalogue, built as it is on the strong foundations of releases from artists as diverse as Cauto, Filastine and Offshore.

The new label from Silent Witness returns. A devoted follower of techno-influenced drum & bass, Silent Witness adds a new edge & attitude, combining elements of the deep & uplifting within his tear-out dance floor productions. DARKESTRALEX001 One Man Jettison/Boundary Part 1 (Afterthought) // Decorum – Sabre Darkestral Excursions 12″ Vinyl
LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

This young man has been releasing tunes under Dylan and Tech Itch’s wing since 06 and they both have been hammering his releases over and over. You will probably never hear a set of these guys without at least 3 Limewax tunes in it. For this brand new double pack EP Limewax teams up with German Angstgegner Current Value. Current Value has been releasing his particular drum’n bass since the late 90ties on labels like Position Chrome and is now seen as one of the pioneers of this hard drum’n bass style. 2012, the day of Silence is the name of his new album and is due to be released any day now. CRIT042 Late Drop – Break Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. 2009 has been a good year for Critical, having built yet further on its reputation as being one of the most forward-thinking underground drum and bass labels in the scene. Appearances from Spectrasoul, Sabre, Serum & Vapour paved the way for the heavily acclaimed Critical Sound compilation that saw label boss Kasra representing the ‘Future of D&B’ at Fabric’s 10th birthday and even guesting on BBC Radio 1. Now just in time for Christmas Critical serve up one last delicious 12” before the new year from the mighty Break. Smooth’s the word as ‘Late Drop’ gets under way with lazy-day pads and a light stepping break that runs through the DJ-friendly intro all the way to the breakdown. Wait for the typically gnarly Breakbass though and then it’s throttle down, away we go on this late night tech-roller that oozes class and sees Critical’s eyes set firmly on the dance floor once again. ‘Crunchy’ kicks off with some interesting orchestration and a simple stepping break that flowsunderneath jungle samples and a distant vocal. It’s all about the distorted b-line though as Break doeswhat he does best letting it worm its way into your psyche. No-nonsense D&B to move your feet. DJ support from Friction, Break, Cyantific, Spectrasoul, Marky, Nu Tone, Logistics and Kasra amongst others.

FFLP1-1 The Cocoon – Chook Full Force Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. The Cocoon is the culmination of half a decade’s worth of hard work. Starting out in 2004, Chook launched Full Force Recordings as an output for the fierce and disturbing side of European techno influenced drum & bass. The label garnered support right from the off with DJs as diverse as Roni Size, J Majik and Calyx & Teebee all queuing up to work Full Force’s releases into their sets. Chook, alongside friends such as Germany’s Phace (Subtitles), New Zealand’s State of Mind (Shogun Audio) and USA’s Mayhem (Ram Records) put the label firmly on the map with tracks from some of the world’s finest breakbeat artists, keeping the music policy as credible, long-lasting D&B. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook delves deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Some might consider that a lost art in drum & bass these days.

Hard, dark jungle for the roughnecks!! Theory came to prominence with several key signings to prestigious labels like Digital’s Function and Vibez offshoot, 13 Music. PSQ001 Small Hours – Asusu Project Squared 12″ Vinyl
A Techno and Dubstep label, formed mid 2009. Project Squared aims to release 12” vinyl and download projects that are dance floor focused, that test new ground and that have depth as well as impact. We release music that covers the space between Techno and Dubstep as well as music that stays more firmly within those two genres. Created as a sub-label of Project Mooncircle due to a change in taste from one of the co-ordinators of that label, we were amazed to find two artists (Asusu and Furesshu) that were not signed such was the quality of their music. Still in early stages, the label aims to keep releasing high quality dance music, to gather more artists and to change and evolve as styles change and evolve… Most importantly as our own tastes change and evolve. Project Squared is a sub-label of Project Mooncircle and is affiliated with HHV.de. The label is co-run by Paul Cooper and Gordon Gieseking. Artwork and design is by Gordon Gieseking. Asusu – Now a dubstep producer with his sound tied to the deeper side of things, Asusu has moved from roots in hip hop and trip hop through to garage, dubstep and dub techno. Recently he has received radio play from various DJ’s on Sub FM, Dubstep FM and Reload Radio, and DJ’s himself (dubstep, garage & techno) mainly in Bath and Bristol. His tracks have received accolades in Mixmag and ATM (L.V. and XI’s top ten charts). He currently holds a residency at Rocksteady, Bath’s first monthly dubstep night, and also regularly co-hosts a show on Sub.fm alongside Trigga.

HENCH012 Ironhide / Slaughtered – Lost Hench 12″ Vinyl
Born and bred in Croydon, 19-year old Justin Cantor, a.k.a Lost, is the latest addition to the acclaimed HENCH crew. Somewhat of a child prodigy, Justin started DJ-ing at an early age, and got his first set of decks aged 12. It was not long before Justin’s attention was caught by the burgeoning dubstep movement; inspired by the sounds of Skream and Digital Mystikz’s, he turned his hand to dubstep production early in 2008. Soon after, his debut release came out on Hatcha & N-Type’s ‘Croydon Dubheads’ EP. He recently was named alongside Emalkay and 16 Bit as one to watch in Radio 1xtra’s ‘Future Sound of Dubstep’. We’re proud to present Lost’s debut release on the Hench imprint and are sure that you’ll enjoy it.
A. IRONHIDE – Lost creates a seriously atmospheric mood from the start in Ironhide, building to a subtle drop of one mean reverbed wobbly bassline. A real creeper of a tune, the open hi-hat progresses throughout, giving way to a double time feel that’ll keep heads
nodding. This is one serious weapon for your bag!
AA. SLAUGHTERED – Flip over for another bass-led rhythm, from Lost. Pushing a different tone from the A side (yet no less menacing), ‘Slaughtered’ immediately surrounds you with its rolling filtered wobble. This is one futuristic sounding bass riff. An echoey drum loop helps create an ambience and suspense to this track. With such a distinct vibe, you’re guaranteed to have the crowd putting their screwface’s on when this gets dropped.
DJ Support for both tracks from: Hatcha, N-type, Jakes, Skream, Chef, Beezy, Shiverz, Darkside (Getdarker), Tubby (Newham Generals), Mista Jam (BBC 1Xtra)
These tracks from will feature in the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1 (Due early 2010). The compilation is to be mixed by Jakes and will feature unreleased tracks from Papa ‘ench too. The release will also contain VIP’s of Jakes, Komonazmuk, Chasing Shadows, Lost and Giant, aswell as providing a platform for debut releases on the label from Minus, Tek-one and Mensah.

DD0001 Digidesign (Om Unit’s Pop Lock Mix) – Joker Unknown 12″ Vinyl
Arguably one of the top ranking dubstep / bass music releases of the past 12 months, and undeniably one of the most widely loved and heavily played, Joker’s epic synth track ‘Digidesign’ now gets the rework treatment from Om Unit, ramping up the rhythms and hitting the hard-bap pedal with extra weight to create a wobbling headnodder fix with a touch of off-centre (un)balance. This remix has been doing the rounds since late summer with support from the likes of Mark Pritchard aka Harmonic 313, Plastician, Jamie Vex’d (Planet Mu/Hotflush), Alexander Nut (Rinse/Eglo), and Joker himself. Om Unit is a new production moniker of Jim “2tall” Coles, a London based DJ and producer who has been active in the hip hop and electronic scene for several years. Other forthcoming releases under the Om Unit name include a 7″ on All City and a 12″ on Plastician’s Terrorhythm label. Issued with the full blessing of Joker and Hyperdub, this one-sided white label pressing will only be in print for a limited period, so get your pre-order swerve on without delay.

a Joker – Digidesign (Om Unit’s Pop Lock Mix)

HDB027 Hyperdub 5.5 EP – Mala / Cooly G HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
The fifth and final edition of the Hyperdub 5 12″ series, and it doesn’t dissapoint. Two of the highlight tracks from the Hyperdub 5 compilation, as before fresh material that hadn’t previously seen the light of day. Mala’s long sought-after ‘Level Nine’ at long last available on wax complete with its strangely moving bass reduction and melody makes for a killer A-side. It’s Cooly G’s ‘Weekend Fly’ that steals the show on this one. Constructed of stripped down effects and awkwardly timed drums it’s quirkiness works it into a uncomfortabley-bizarre masterpiece. A definite 12″ for the collection.

DRUNK015 Don’t Sleep – Hyetal & Shortstuff Punch Drunk Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Punch Drunk launches into 2010 with colourful cuts to beat the freeze in the form of two hot collaborations from Hyetal & Shortstuff. The hyper synth frenzy of Don’t Sleep and the technicolour visions of Ice Cream have been heavily rotated by Jackmaster, Brackles, Untold, Gemmy, Ben UFO, 2562, Oneman, Starkey amongst others.A flurry of releases in 2009 put Hyetal at the centre of a Bristol second wave of producers. Having caught the ear of Mary Anne Hobbs and subsequently appearing on her Planet Mu compilation ‘Wild Angels’, Hyetal has also seen releases for Bristollian labels Reduction and Soul Motive, and also for Texas based Formant Recordings. Releases on Planet Mu, Ramp Recordings, Berkane Sol and Pollen throughout 2009 have seen Shortstuff assert himself as a key mover in the new wave of grime, garage, funky and hip hop influenced beats and basslines infiltrating the UK underground. Shared roots in the forward thinking Nottingham Futureproof and Wigflex scenes, Shortstuff has recently launched his own imprint, Blunted Robots, alongside Brackles.

SENSELESS011 You Know – Ghosttown ft Badness & Dajla Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Wonky dancefloor dancehall from Ghosttown featuring Badness, mix from DZ, Like his spectral namesake Simon Booth aka Ghosttown has spent the last few years obscured, half out of sight as a producer hiring out his futuristic beat-science to a string of heavy hitting MCs including Foreign Beggars here in the UK and a clutch of artists across the Atlantic including Guilty Simpson, Oh No, Frank and Dank and Dudley Perkins from the Dilla/Stones Throw axis of the hip hop spectrum.
His debut release started life like most of his productions, on a beat tape with another 80 or so one minute tracks, all vital snapshots charged with the excitement of what might happen with the right MC but there was something special about the original ‘Greezy’. It wires up squelching formant synths to insistent, minimal drums sounding like a 2010 UK-bass update to Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ but at 145 BPM with speaker damaging sub.
This devastating but unusual collision of sounds needed a versatile MC and Badness was top of the list. Known for his early work with Lava Unit and Terror Danjah as well as last year’s carnival smash ‘Message is Love’ with Jammer and Silverlink Birmingham born Badness’ star is on the rise. ‘You Know’ as the track became features his signature double time bashment/grime flow and a killer hook sung by cosmic-soul powerhouse Dajla. The Parisian born singer is a Radio Nova favourite who has collaborated with Wax Tailor, Foreign Beggars and celebrated hip hop poet Anthony Joseph. The resulting track is unmistakably UK but with a bashment flavour, wonky dancehall? The vinyl remix comes from DZ (Hot Flush/Tru Tiger) who delivers a mix that turbo charges the dancefloor elements of the track to come up with multi coloured low end work out. Senseless will release a Ghosttown album in summer 2010 featuring vocalists including Frank & Dank, Olivier Daysoul, Badness, YT, Navigator, Killa P and more. 2010 is the year the Ghost
comes to life.
PLAYS FROM: Mistajam on 1xtra, Review in Mixmag, Skream, Vex’d, Baobinga, Tomb Crew, Starkey, Warlock, Kanji Kinetic, Sterotyp, Laurent Garnier.

ROTTUN005 Retreat (Excision Remix) – Datsik & Excision Rottun 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Two of the hottest producers at the moment have to be Datsik and Excision and when they get together they make some of the most innovative sounding music. Think of the type of music played at an acid filled Transformers rave and you might have some sort of idea what it may sound like. Two Step drum patterns, Crazy morphing synth lines with freakish incidentals and heavy hitting basslines. Any robots heaven. So corrupt it could send Cillit Bang out of business.

BOKA024PT1 Chainsaw Calligraphy Remixes (Part 1) – 16bit Boka Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy Promo’s in Full artwork disco sleeve. The long awaited 16bit – ‘Chainsaw Calligraphy’ remixes are upon us, this is Part 1 of 2 featuring the JAKES and PROPATINGZ mixes.
JAKES, the founding member of the HENCH crew was an obvious target to carry out the Chainsaw remix, being a big fan of the original and regularly rinsing the track out in the raves, he’s given the track the signature Jakes sound, psychedelic bass-lines and heavyweight percussion, watch out for the sample too, see if you recognise it. Heavy support coming from N-TYPE (Rinse FM), MISTAJAM (Radio1), WALSH, TRUTH, MARLOW and HATCHA (Kiss FM).
UK born but now living in LA PROPATINGZ has his musical history in the Breaks scene, a long purveyor of the sound and a regular on the live scene he has more recently switched his style and has been directly influenced by 16bit’s sound. He has big releases lined up and is beginning to cause quite a stir with his tracks featuring on Radio 1 etc…..def one to look out for. His remix was written over the course of a year, alot of blood sweat and tears have gone into it, and the listener will realise this when he/she hears it, devastating,
pure and simple. Support coming from OOAH and the GLITCH MOB crew, AKIRA KITESHI and N-TYPE (Rinse FM).

RAMP007 Yes, Yes Suite 3 – Kankick Ft. Miki Vale Ramp Recordings 7″ Vinyl
Way back through the mists of time West Coast leftfield beats were the staple of a young Ramp Recordings. Here, wonky originator Kankick breaks out the SP1200 and delves into the crates knocking out a dusty banger with militant vocals from 6Ft Amazonian warrior Miki Vale. This is super limited end of run find.

RAMP009 Sagala (CD LP) – Pattie Blingh and the Akebulan 5 (Georgia Anne Muldrow) Ramp Recordings CD
Back in 2007, RAMP Recordings issued “Sagala” by Pattie Blingh & The Akebulan Five, which later spawned the 2562/Samiyam remix 10”. Pattie Blingh is Stones Throw & Ubiquity recording artist Georgia Anne Muldrow at her rawest and most creative, and after years of being out of press, we are pleased to press “Sagala” into your sweaty palm once again. Abrupt endings and loose timing give “Sagala” a truly unique sound, with an unrefined approach to rhythm smacking of a young RZA, while instrumental textures can recall anything from Funkadelic to The Cult, and the roll-jump-roll flow of her modes and moods is in the same addictive bracket as the best of Dilla, Madlib, and MF Doom., except they can’t even dream of competing on vocals. Her matchless delivery effortlessly pitches angrily-spat versification alongside angelic harmonic layers, with a lyrical content that marries late 60s English psychedelia to a stream of ebonic consciousness drawn from the same source as Marvin Gaye and Public Enemy.

1 Pattie Blingh and the Akebulan 5 (Georgia Anne Muldrow) – Reallytho
2 Pattie Blingh and the Akebulan 5 (Georgia Anne Muldrow) – Andante
3 Pattie Blingh and the Akebulan 5 (Georgia Anne Muldrow) – Fidelity: Do Right Girl

New Hip Hop Releases

RAMP026 Bare Feet – Maxmillion Dunbar Ramp Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Maryland resident MAXMILLION DUNBAR caught our attention on a desperately limited 7” last year on his own Future Times imprint. Swerving the current contrived reference points, B-Boy Max forges his own path mixing a kaleidoscope of boogie, electro, hip hop & analog soul. Max’s first EP for RAMP starts with Bare Feet clipping sparse soul loops with epic flourishes, Loveloop/Socket Bonus marrying cascading synths and 808’s, Wouldn’t Matter chops up a relentless boogie loops and epic disco strings, and WAVS draws the EP to a close with 80’s beat boxes and ramshackle synth lines.

BCHEM001 Bad Chemistry / Fear – Gein Bad Chemistry 12″ Vinyl
“Man will begin to recover the moment he takes art as serious as physics, chemistry, or money” The wait is finally over. With a mindset of D.I.Y. and a vision of the future, drum and bass producers GEIN unleash their new record label BAD CHEMISTRY RECORDINGS on the world’s ears. And with five years of production credit, as well as 5 years of record label management with HABIT RECORDINGS, the trio is set to stir up the drum and bass scene with a conceptual label that defies people’s set standards. With Bad Chemistry, GEIN is turning heads all across the board with collaborations you would come to expect, never expect, as well as new solo material that breaks stereotypes. And with support from major players in the drum and bass world, the hype is growing daily. The first release is the fitting “Bad Chemistry” produced by GEIN, backed with “Fear” with additional production by newcomers Biolysis. “Bad Chemistry” is a neurotic techy monster that is definitely made for the dancefloor, with a demented breakdown that keeps the crowds screaming for more. “Fear” is what happens when evil meets futurism, with heavy beats and sinister basslines. And this is just the beginning. With forthcoming collaborations with Tech Itch & Jakes, The Chosen, Audio, Mayhem, The Sect, SPKTRM, Counterstrike, Cooh, as well as solo tracks from GEIN, SPKTRM, Demo & Ewun, and more, Bad Chemistry Recordings is ready to prove to the world that not all things can be explained… bad chemistry is good chemistry.

DW02 Jealous Eyes (Utah Jazz Remix) – Smooth DrumWise 12″ Vinyl
The second DrumWise release with a bit different flavour, brings what’s finest in drum and bass. Utah Jazz remix of Jealous Eyes is a proper liquid roller with catchy vocals and funky piano theme. After the intro, the bass lands deep in the groove, and builds a perfect connection with the rhythmic section. The Piano shortly moves away but soon comes back to create an unforgettable romantic mood. As in the first release Smooth’s colab was a bit darker. This time on the B side his own masterpiece is light and groovy. A Melodic intro with violins and smooth pads go into a heavy rhythmic conjunction. After the breakdown the story continues with a perfect ‘disco’ build-up and finalise in a passionate synergy of beats and melodies.

exit018
EXIT018 Inner Disbelief – dBridge Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. This track screams out classic dBridge in every sense with its clever use of musical stabs, eerie atmospheres and growling sub bass.

darkestralex001
DARKESTRALEX001 One Man Jettison/Boundary Part 1 (Afterthought) // Decorum – Sabre Darkestral Excursions 12″ Vinyl
LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black & White streaked vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo.

LUCKYDEVIL007 Liberty City Blues – Data / Incident & Paul SG Lucky Devil 12″ Vinyl
After a brief hiatus, we return with a delicate slice of wax that epitomises what LDR stands for – new, original music from hardworking, young artists. After the success of Data’s “Blowpipe” on LD5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like Metalheadz, Critical, Revolution and Tempa, Data brings us a grimy gem in the form of “Liberty City Blues”. Incident from Hungary and Paul SG from Austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent Knowledge Magazine cover CD mix. “Liberty City Blues” is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early Photek or Source Direct. From the outset the tune just bubbles with menace and keeps on building and evolving throughout. A pure bass-heavy slice of proper jungle. “Autumn Drops” is a soulful roller that shows that this crew are ones to watch in 2010. Full of melancholy, icy vibes and a subtle basslinethat gets right under your skin, this track is a firm favourite for this year.

lb005
LB005 All Ends EP – Limewax & Current Value L B Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2
Triple Vision proudly welcomes L B Recordings to the drum’n bass roster. Limewax is the man behind this label. This young man has been releasing tunes under Dylan and Tech Itch’s wing since 06 and they both have been hammering his releases over and over. You will probably never hear a set of these guys without at least 3 Limewax tunes in it. After a series of serious 12″ he released his greatly anticipated ‘Scars on the horizon’ album on Technical Freak. Things just got messier from that and nowadays mister Limewax is touring the world with his razor sharp beats, strange offbeat like rhythm patterns and ghastly soundscapes.
One thing is for sure: this EP is not for the faintharted. Make sure to tighten your seatbelts, say goodbye to you dear ones and let the music take you to new dimensions.

ex7002
EX7002 Swagga – Excision & Datsik EX7 12″ Vinyl
Vinyl copies of EX7001, Excision – ‘Yin Yang’, sold out in a matter of weeks, while the digital release has been sitting pretty at the top of the Beatport dubstep chart ever since it was dropped. Now, following on from their immense first 12”, EX7 is back with an even more impressive pair of dance floor killers. EX7002 has been getting plenty of attention from all comers, with dubstep, breaks and even drum & bass DJs all clamouring to get their hands on it. The A side, ‘Swagga’, was a feature in Excision’s DJ sets on his recent UK tour as sweaty crowds of teenagers rushed the decks shouting “Play Swagga!” in anticipation of its filthy bassline combinations (we kid you not, we feared for our lives…). Not only that, but ‘Swagga’ is the only non-Rusko track that Rusko’s been battering on all his recent radio mixes; for proof just check out his recent Breezeblock mix for BBC Radio 1. Teaming up with fellow Canadian, Datsik, once again on the flip, Excision creates another mechanoid-influenced stomper that hails the beginning of Armageddon. Monster bass and super-hard beats are what ‘Invaderz’ is all about, another piece of heavy artillery for Excision & Datsik’s sonic armoury. **Watch out for Excision & Datsik remixes for CTRL-Z & The Freestylers and Wu Tang Clan hitting the streets soon.**

ear012
EAR012 Chicken Foot – Clue Kid Earwax 12″ Vinyl
It’s been a while now since Clue Kid released his debut single here on ‘Earwax – ‘Halogen’ and ‘Down & Dirty’ (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he’s has mastered his art. The lead track ‘Chicken Foot’ is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge. Support from: Pinch, Loefah, Mary Anne-Hobbs, Plastician, N-Type, RSD and many more.

OSMUK007 Life Continuum – Kryptic Minds Osiris Music UK 12″ Vinyl
Kryptic Minds first release since their highly anticipated ‘One Of Us’ Album on Loefah’s Swamp81 label. Kryptic Minds show they have many strings to their bow in the shape of this killer 2 track 12” on their own Osiris Music uk imprint. X_Life Continuum shows the guys going in deep with hard synth manipulation, warm pads and haunting choir which glides in and out effortlessly through the mix. Best listened to in a dark room, with a massive sound system, for people who like to feel the bass rattling they’re chest! Y_Wondering Why this is the yang of the flip, with a different feel altogether, in what only can be described as beautiful! With a skippy half time beat, and the sense of emotion from the off. As soon as the needle hits the edge of the record you know you are in for an emotional six minute journey. With a ghost like female vocal that glides through the track like a hot knife through butter. One for the head phones but also rocks the dance.
DJ support: Youngsta, Loefah, Mala, Headhunter, N – Type, Pinch, Distance. Mary Anne Hobbs.

Suntime is a dark, brooding stomper sure to give your subs a workout whilst the flip side, Tall Tales has a lighter more energetic feel that is sure to bring a crowd to life. The Brighton based producer DOM has had a string of successful releases both on Faisty Records and on Clandestine Cultivations and his tracks regularly get crowds moving in clubs everywhere. CLDUB009 Coastal Dubs Part 1 – Ultrasound / Hizzle Guy Clandestine Cultivations 12″ Vinyl
The first in a series of Clandestine plates devoted to exposing the production talents of Brighton town. Presenting two producers destined to go a long way: Ultrasound and Hizzle Guy. Two very distinct takes on bass heavy 140bpm music, these tracks have been alternately blissing out and smashing up dancefloors around the world in recent months, so here they are for you to continue the trend. ULTRASOUND consist of two Brighton based DJ producers and a London based sound engineer. Between them these three have released a huge number of tracks across different genres over the years, DJ’d different styles of music in venues all over the shop, worked in record shops and are now behind the highly acclaimed “well rounded” label. For their first release as a production outfit Ultrasound have distilled Dubstep through a refined apparatus of trip-hop, soundsystem warmth, Berlin texture and sheer musical sensibility into something both unique and familiar. With big support from the leftfield of Dubstep and tastemakers like Belgiums Bunzero. HIZZLE GUY is a young Brighton based DJ who along with his Gangoon Dubz crew has taken Brighton by storm with his raw and instinctive DJ style and tunes. We really can’t overemphasize how much energy this guy has on the decks, and it transfers straight to his tunes. Dread is an absolute low slung monster of a tune in the rave, at once hype filled and drudgingly weighty, with a loping propulsion and gully vibe thats been sorely lacking from “dancefloor” dubstep of late. Think Slaughter Mob meets Cluekid and you’re part way there. Already getting big support from names like Sukh Knight and Afterdark.

‘No Comply’ is a brand new label from veteran dubstep producer Marlow, and he continues to carefully carve out his own sound with a classic blend of dense melodics, emotive vocals and pulsing basslines. ‘Druid’ is no exception: an intricate wall of music hits you immediately, crunching mid-range that doesn’t over do it, pulsing 4×4 drums, and plenty of colourful detail, all heightened by a sweet vocal akin to the soulful tones of Minnie Ripperton. ‘Cattle Prod’ on the flip, once again, utilises a powerful vocal sample to build the tension for a drop that squelches and squashes it’s way through the dancefloor. – ATM Review.

ISP002 Blip / Vansan (Gatekeeper remix) – Gatekeeper / Appleblim If Symptoms Persist 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. A nice quick follow-up to a great first release on Wedge’s new label ISP,….this time by his good friend Gatekeeper. As the name suggests, ‘Blip’ on….the A centres around an incessant beep motif, slowly treated and effectedover time as the tune develops – sliding breaks, deep punchy bass, and then those gorgeous shimmering chords evolving throughout. On the B, Gatekeeper tackles Appleblim’s Skull Disco anthem ‘Vansan’ – expounding the original themes of texture created by delay and reverb and incorporating them into a 140bpm technical jungle piece. 9/10 [recommended] DJ Thinking IDJ Magazine.

HDB029 Sahara Michael / Fish – Ikonika HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Hyperdub’s original female producer Ikonika comes with this long-awaited release that lives up to all expectations, presenting two brilliant tracks that set the scene for her debut album due early in 2010. ‘Sahara Michael’ seems cryptic at first, but on repeated listens falls into focus, revealing its complex soul, marrying bright (dis)chords which contrast with the warm undertow of harmonies that flow throughout. The track steps into a bridge passage with a melody that recalls the funky worm melodies of prime G-Funk, extending the theme of contrasting polar opposites that the tune plays with. B side ‘Fish’ chanels early Detroit techno at its most abstract and painterly. Smears of bright vibrating chords flash frantically across the mix, building into thick harmonic meshes backed by a hard drum pattern before they solidfy into a triumphant melody. Strange and beautiful music, in a full-colour sleeeve to match.

RAD001 Medicate – Logos Radial Productions 12″ Vinyl
Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction.
‘Medicate’ has received DJ support from LV (Hyperdub), Ben UFO (Hessle Audio), Pangaea (Hessle Audio, Hotflush), Blackdown (Keysound), Mick Pressure (Naked Lunch), Narcossist/Kowton (Keysound)
Blackdown (Keysound): “a lost gem – really harks back to an era of dubstep that is increasingly disappearing”
Ben UFO (Hessle Audio): “both sides of the release are great. Uncompromisingly eyes down vibes”

HDB028 Aidys Girl is a Computer – Darkstar HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Some are saying, Tune of Year.. and finally on VInyl!!..Almost criminally luxurious post-UK garage sounds from Darkstar, who here check box one in the I-Spy book of faceless dance bods by not being able to lay their hands on a real-life girl to sing the hook, enlisting a talky computer program to do the business instead. But Aidys Girl Is A Computer is nothing if not sensuous; all swirling synthezisers, chiming percussion and skippy drums laced with whimpering techno-chatter that sounds not unlike an android deriving some salacious enjoyment from the warm jet of a Jacuzzi.
