Dan Marshall is one of the biggest up and coming producers from Wales to hit the scene since High Contrast. Born and raised in Cardiff he makes consistently good tracks with releases on many labels. ADRS has snapped up his track ‘Scorn’ for this third release. This track mixes the pads of liquid Drum and Bass with a bass-line of harder dance floor anthems. Foxrox returns to ADRS with another stunning piece of music. This track has had massive support from The Risky (DnB Arena Founder), who recently played it on the D&B Arena Podcast. The fourth release on the Project Squared label marks our first year in existence. Asusu, the artist who graced the first Project Squared 12” a year ago, returns with “No Kya”, a 144bpm track of introspective, impeccable sound design, a tightly controlled swung beat reminiscent of Garage and a deep bass line. The track follows in the vein of Asusu’s previous 12” releases on Project Squared and Immerse Records (and his forthcoming release on Orca Recordings), whilst pushing his sound into a new, more sedate area. The B side features a remix of “No Kya” by F, a producer who has created a strong reputation for himself in just 2 years of releasing music on 7even Recordings. He has worked with Headhunter, has remixed Jus Wan and has been remixed by Ramadanman and Untold. His album “Energy Distortion” is one of the highlights of 2010 so far. F remixes “No Kya” into a 140bpm club tune. The drums switch between 4/4 and swung patterns, accompanied by rattling percussion and huge sub bass. Dance floor tested with success by Skratch at Sub:stance, Berghain, this track finishes off a superbly balanced release that caters both for intense headphone listening and the peak time dance floor. NONPLUSLP002PART1 – LOL – LOL Part 1 – 12″ Vinyl
lol is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one)They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

RWINA010 – Rachet – Hyper Dimention – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Rachet, a new kid on the block, debuts with the banging Hyper Dimention EP for Rwina Records on October 25. Well, Rachet isn’t that new on the fold. He’s worked with MCs like Devlin, Jammer, Frisco and Beezy, to name a few, back in the day. Don’t be misled by the wrong spelling of Dimention, this release is positively on point with some heavy dancefloor smashers in the typically forward-thinking Rwina fashion. Lead track ‘Hyper Dimention’ combines R&B and dubstep to a result for a track that explores and spans numerous strains of music that haven’t even been invented yet. The vicious ‘Electrical Basssweep’ pits hard-hitting drums against a fierce, dark bassline and a ravey but dripping bleepy melody. Closing the EP, ‘Sega Megadrive’ is a bubbling beast that imports a dramatic feeling to home-listeners but an energetic one to dancers, thoughtful peak time stuff in this one!

Scuba “Triangulation” Hotflush (HFLP003)
Alongside Scuba’s Sub:Stance mix or the lightly surging techno he issued as SCB, few electronic records were better suited for headphone listening in 2010 than Triangulation, the twisted, oscillating LP from the Berlin-based producer born Paul Rose. It’s a sonic wonder; ambient dark house, UK garage, and drum ‘n’ bass join a tide of trickling atmospherics on the album. Triangulation is a deep-lurking and kinetic standout in this year’s very impressive array of bass music releases. Those digging Mount Kimbie’s Crooks and Lovers would do well to check into the guy who put out their records. Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has been at the forefront of the dubstep scene since its birth. Having founded the innovative and influential Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, he has continually brought colour and depth to an advancing genre, expanding its sonic structure and increasing its influence on the wider electronic scene.

Through Scuba and seminal work by central figures including Distance, Vex’d and more recently Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison, Hotflush remains crucial to the immediate moment and the developing future of the most exciting aspects of electronic music. In addition to label and production duties, he also runs the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at Berlin’s techno Mecca, Berghain, the sound of which he committed to plastic in a DJ mix released on Ostgut Ton in January 2010.

Scuba

Following the first Scuba LP, A Mutual Antipathy (2008) which was remixed by Marcel Dettman, Martyn and Surgeon, Triangulation (2010) took the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But Triangulation moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive.

For Triangulation (Interpretations) new allure is breathed into Scuba’s originals.  The listless beauty of Before is embued with a spine tingling warmth on Scuba’s luscious opening re-edit, Before (After). A remix of Latch by Will Saul & Mike Monday of Simple Records, Aus Music and Buzzin’ Fly, infuses the dubbed out original with a dose of bumping house flavor.  America’s totem of bass Faulty DL takes leave from the original On Deck with a low burring bassline and elegantly woven melodies drawn warmly across the whole. Scuba’s back with the old skool vibes on You Got Me (I Got You) but confidently skips the line by keeping it firmly in this moment. Canadian Deadbeat has showcased his own brand of dub laden electronics for the likes of Wagon Repair,  Scape, Spectral , Musique Risque and Cynosure over the past decade, his remix of Tracers sees him in classic form delivering a deep 7am techno heavy hitter. Joe made an immediate impact on the scene with his 12”s on Hessle Audio and Applepips over the past year, his rework of So You Think You’re Special has a slowly blossoming groove underpinning stuttering percussion, jangling keys and an expertly playful melody that opens out across the sparse background. Finally, South London’s Deadboy offers an understated modern jungle remix of Before with skittering hats and heavy bass that can’t fail to light up floors and faces.

Fresh off the back of the massive single ‘When I Look At You’ & ‘AGS’ on sister label Dub Police. Emalkay steps up to Storming Productions with two wicked tracks. They have been tearing up dancefloors worldwide over the last couple of months. Through Scuba and seminal work by central figures including Distance, Vex’d and more recently Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison, Hotflush remains crucial to the immediate moment and the developing future of the most exciting aspects of electronic music. Following the first Scuba LP, A Mutual Antipathy (2008), and the more recent Aesaunic EP (2009), this album takes the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But Triangulation moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive. You Got Me and So You Think You’re Special, released as an advance 12”, reflect the range of the album with the huge bass and frenetic energy of the former contrasting with the melancholic atmospheres and melodies of the latter. The listless beauty of Before, the aggressively percussive Minerals and the hyperactive electro of On Deck provide further stylistic variation, but this is not simply a collection of tracks – for the best sonic results this album should be listened to in full.

ARX004 Minimal Bump EP – Nekochan Airflex Labs 12″ Vinyl
Nekochan’s 2009 debut download-only release met with success in pushing dubstep into new zones, and now comes the first foray into vinyl, with the three-track killer ‘Minimal Bump’ EP, that will further reconfigure notions of what bass music can be. The title track has already been featured on Mary Anne Hobbs, who played an early version in may last year after hearing it on myspace. ‘Minimal Bump’ is a powerful techno/break/dubstep instrumental with a huge kick and seismic bass work, custom built for dancefloor mayhem, with its layered synths, advanced rythmic shifts, cavernous drops, and an explosive production style that recalls the intricacies of prime Meat Beat Manifesto at the same time as giving Reso a run for his money. On the flip, ‘Bombine’ is another view entirely; a emotive disjointed stepper with melancoly pop tones, which unfolds in a smokey torch-song style to reveal further layers to Nekochan’s innate musical instincts. It’s fluidly evolving contrasts between dominant bass levels, powerful rhythms, and subtlypitched Japanese strings mix and grow around that voice, putting the listener as much in mind of Burial’s sadness as Bjork’s vivid expression. Finally, Vahiné is a refreshing journey into a lighter and atmospheric dubstep style, reminiscent in mood of Scuba or Martyn, with a dynamic bouncy drum pattern delivering the perfect groove for the heavy bassline to ride on while the sweet string melody leads from the front. Essential purchase for anyone seeking out new directions in heady dancefloor electronics.

Computer is a wise cracking collection of circuit boards, and enjoys spitting crazy verses over Jay’s synth-heavy beats. Maintain is their first collaboration that has reached wax, and boy, you better brace yourselves! Ascending analog flourishes scattered over Jay’s minimal beats, giving Computer room to do his thing. Jay’s epic production packs more into 3 and a half minutes than most producers can cram into 10. True to form, we have drafted an unrivaled array of remixers in for the project. RAMP’s best boy FaltyDL is first up, and gives us an edgy and uncomfortable edit in his unique garage-not-garage style. Upstanding member of the community, and all round lovely chap MIKE SLOTT steps out of his comfort zone with some euphoric basslined hip hop badness. MEDI024 Protecting Hands Remixes – Clouds Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl

Following on from the highly acclaimed original productions ‘Protecting Hands (Parts 1 and 2)’ released mid-2009 on DEEP MEDi Musik, Clouds have enlisted Berkane Sol’s label owner Geiom and experimental electronic minimalists Isan to dissect and rebuild. Kamal Joory AKA Geiom has been busy producing since the late 90’s pushing the downtempo and ambient sounds of IDM and merging them with his love of raw grime and garage instrumentals. In 2006 Geiom started the ever-reliable Berkane Sol imprint releasing his own work (most notable the stunning ‘Reminssin’ featuring Marita) but also giving Brackles and Shortstuff their first outing on wax. Geiom’s remix of ‘Protecting Hands’ sketches out a dreamy, beautiful half-step approach with his love of electronica clearly coming heavily in to play, complimenting the original ghostly vocal perfectly. One of his best productions we think? Isan have been making minimalistic electronics since the mid 90’s with killer releases on Morr Music and Static Craven. Clouds are clearly fans of their work and this comes across in their remix as they dissect the original and create a blissful, beatless journey, permitting the sound to develop organically, with their intuitive grasp of melody and their intelligent manipulation of sound dictating its direction.

With a label HQ based half way up a cliff in deepest North Devon, and an artist roster that includes a Hampshire lad living in Leeds, a crew of Cubans holed up in Hackney, and the hottest new thing to come up out of Leicester since Willie Thorne hung up his cue, new label Shifting Peaks won’t be easy to pin down geographically . And musically it promises to be no less diverse, covering everything from the deeper end of Funky and 2010 Garage to Cuban Hip Hop and dubbed out Beats. Kicking things off in style for the label is Leeds resident Hackman, who’s ‘Pistol in Your Pocket’ tune was one of the highlights of the recent Fabric/Elevator comp. Lead cut ‘Always ‘ employs the vocal talents of newcomer Harper Lake over a bumping UKF/Nu Garage backing that’s both warm and deep, combining proper hooks with easy dancefloor appeal. Fast rising Londoner Brackles then takes the song and straps on a phuture – garage turbo-charger, adding techno textures and slamming beats for a crunching, dynamic rework. An instrumental version of Hackmans’ original works in it’s own right , and to round the package off, the dubheads also get ‘Multicultural’, a deep, percussion driven roller perfect for late night jams and red eyed-headphone excursions alike.

O4H001 Seeking feat Yolanda – Ghettozoid 12″ Vinyl

The origins of it’s name came from a seminal summer in Berlin, where Sophie Ruston (Ghettozoid) and Mai Harper (label founders) first laid eyes on each other. The name One4Ho incorporates Ghettozoid’s obsession with Miami Bass. Essentially we are ladies that love the 140tempo.
IDJ mag review: Bristol resident Ghettozoid brings in fêted vocalist Yolanda to help launch her One 4 Ho imprint. Moody washes of midrange synth provide an ample background for Yolanda’s stunning vocal spiritual, clockwork garage breaks and thunderous bass thrum adding a dash of urgency to the mix. Crackle house specialist Blue Daisy turns in a sick remix on the flip, dubbing the track hard as he stretches the samples tautly across his canvas – ambient vocal excursions eventually joined by a burrowing acid bassline and Daisy’s trademark squeezed beats.
