Scuba “Personality” LP [Hotflush Recordings]

Posted 17 January 2012 | By | Categories: news, player, tracks | No Comments

Scuba is the production and DJ alias of Paul Rose, the curator of Hotflush Recordings, a label, which having released some of the most important tracks of the formative period of dubstep, has grown into a leading player in the wider world of electronic music. A celebrated and influential DJ, Scuba was voted #25 in Resident Advisor’s 2011 poll of the world’s Top 100 DJs and has also been nominated for several categories in DJ Magazine’s Best of British 2011 Awards.

Earlier this year Scuba released his ‘Adrenalin’ EP, picking up radio plays from Zane Lowe, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank as well as Mistajam, illustrating how his sound has mutated into previously unexplored areas. Alongside ‘Adrenalin, Scuba also released his addition to K7!’s DJ Kicks series which has made notable appearances on several “Best of 2011″ lists.

On the 27th February, Scuba will release his third album through Hotflush. Entitled ‘Personality’ and featuring 11 brand new tracks, it takes in a wealth of genres across contemporary dance music, proving once again Scuba’s place at the cutting edge of the electronic music scene. Preceding his LP will be ‘The Hope’; pushing on from the tense atmospherics of previous Scuba material, the single fizzes with claustrophobic bass pressure and menacing narration. Backed by an exclusive non-album cut ‘Flash Addict’, ‘The Hope’ will proceed the album on the 6th February.

Paul Rose aka Scuba

Originally from London, Scuba relocated to Berlin in 2007, and released his debut album, ‘A Mutual Antipathy‘ in 2008. The stylistic synergy of the album cemented his position as one of the most forward-thinking producers to emerge from the London bass scene. In the same year, Scuba founded the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at the legendary Berlin club Berghain. SUB:STANCE has since launched in New York with a look to expanding further in 2012.

Scuba’s second album, ‘Triangulation’, was released on Hotflush in early 2010, joining the likes of Mount Kimbie, Sepalcure, Joy Orbison, Untold, Sigha and George Fitzgerald on its enviable roster.  With ‘Personality’ due for imminent release and plans for a live show in the works, Paul Rose’s constantly developing world seems set to keep on turning in 2012.

New D&B Releases

EXITLP009 – Loxy & Resound – Burning Shadows – 12″ Vinyl x 3
London’s Loxy and Finland’s Resound have always been known for their ragga-tinged, hardhitting sound, where each beat slams through with an untouchable technical precision. The two producers have been combining forces for the last three years – including their 2009 anthem ‘Green Destiny / Storyboard’ (Digital Soundboy), remixes for Kryptic Minds, additions to Renegade Hardware compilations, last year’s ‘No Money – Deadly Venom/Driving Force’ (Def Recordings), and their contribution to Exit Records’ ‘Mosaic: Volume One’ (‘Vertigo’) earlier this year. But the duo’s long-awaited debut long player marks their first collaboration that has absolutely no boundaries: as experimental and creative as it gets. True to form, as most Exit Records releases go, ‘Burning Shadows’ sees both producers finding their stride, and treading into surprising new sonic territories from a few different directions. Taking the energy and force of early tech-heavy Drum & Bass, Loxy & Resound bring the genre into a sound that’s uniquely their own.

a Loxy & Resound – Depth Excess
b Loxy & Resound – Fall
c Loxy & Resound – Conquerer X
d Loxy & Resound – Inversion
e Loxy & Resound – Thin Ice
f Loxy & Resound – Conscious

New D&B Promos

REDSEAL014 – ASC – Droids / Never Enough – 12″ Vinyl
Limited coloured vinyl: Solid blue, crystal clear & white mixed. Mutant cyber funk from the man behind Auxilliary, Symbol and one of the albums that has come to signify the Autonomic sound. ‘Droids’ follows ‘Brainscan’ perfectly. A muted power break jabs its way to the drop where it is joined by a writhing bassline, snippets of a classic break and signifying bleeps that mark this as the closest Drum and Bass can get to techno without a 4/4. The layers great techno music is known for are also taken care of here, with the power of every element wrung out to its true potential. ‘Never Enough’ is a drum workout of the highest order, with filters wrapping themselves around the twisting break edits, claps and steadying bassline. Vinyl buyers get an exclusive ambient piece …sshhhhhhh. DJ Support from dBridge, Loxy, Consequence, Synkro, Indigo, Presha and many more.

HORO002 – ASC – No Secrets / Zenith – 10″ Vinyl
Samurai vinyl only ‘Horo’ series Volume 2. Limited Multi Coloured vinyl 10″ – After the success of the last 2 ASC singles for Samurai Red Seal and the flood of quality music that was arriving in our inboxes from the man, it was inevitable it was time for another shot of this UK Born, California residents vision. The ‘Horo’ vinyl series appealed to ASC instantly being a man from a strong techno background and an avid vinyl collector himself. ‘No Secrets’ is one of those tunes that touches you deeply without you realising, echoing in your subconscious and drawing you back for repeat listens. ‘Zenith’ picks up where ‘Bleep Test’ left off, stuttering timeless breaks patched together with diving bass and percussive polishes to produce a unique sound that takes the past and hurls it into the future.

MODULE010 – June Miller – Snapcase – 10″ Vinyl
More primetime, hi-grade drum & bass from the ever on point Critical collective. Label boss Kasra uses his sixth sense once more to uncover these two gems for his Modulations imprint from Holland’s Bart van Dijk and Mark McCann aka June Miller. Once again standards are high, no room for error when Critical’s nearby! A rocksteady two-step break leads the way into ‘Snapcase’, one of the coolest slices of future flexing D&B yet seen on Modulations. It’s all about the drop into dry, tech-step territory that you can be sure smashes any dance floor with ease while the syncopated bass hook grabs and never lets go. File alongside Break and Phace. ‘Walls Of Jericho’ as the name suggests opens with an ominous cinematic soundscape of dark horns and panning percussion before some serious bass surges and panic-laden snares build to a killer climax. Huge off-kilter breaks and ingenious edits then carry it away into possibly the heaviest track yet to have seen a release on Modulations. A great way to kick off 2012.

NARRATIVES001 – Blocks & Escher – Sagan / Broken – 12″ Vinyl
Blocks and Escher have over the space of 2 years grown from being acclaimed newcomers and solo artists to establishing themselves as one of Drum and Bass’ most exciting and sought after production outfits. Their debut releases in 2009 found their way into the record bags of scene luminaries such as Fabio, Marcus Intalex, DJ Hype, Spectrasoul, and Alix Perez- as well as gaining attention outside of the genre for their emotive and progressive take on Drum and Bass with support from artists as varied as Rob Da Bank, Jazzanova, Mary Ann Hobbs and Laurent Garnier. Coming bang up to date, 2011 saw their music grace some of the biggest and most prestigious labels in bass music with releases dropping on Renegade Hardware, Horizons Music and arguably one of the most highly awaited singles of the year “Shadowplay” on Shy Fx’s huge Digital Soundboy imprint. Entering in to 2012, Blocks and Escher present their own label, Narratives Music. Formed primarily as an outlet for their own work alongside collaborations and remixes; the emphasis is on releasing music which encapsulates the atmosphere, emotion and excitement that made them fall in love with the genre in the 1990’s. The Narratives name itself, is derived from the imagery and stories felt and gathered from music; the way that a listener may cast their own interpretation and build their own subjective narrative. The three tracks on the debut release demand to be listened to in their entirety. Three journeys together, inscribing a balanced impression of the Narratives ‘sound’. DJ Support : Rockwell, D Bridge, Loxy, ASC, Doc Scott, Flight, Nerm (BBC Radio 6)

2NDRP12016 – Gerry Read / 23Hz & Numaestro – Roomland (Distal Remix) / Zumo (Sully Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Sometime you can’t keep a good remix down, and we certainly felt that with these two beastly versions by two very exciting producers of bass music. First up is an exciting producer 2nd Drop have been talkin to for over a year now, Atlanta’s Distal has been making a lot of noise across the bass scene with releases on Tectonic and ? Alongside putting a vast array of music on his own Embassy Label. Inspired by Gerry’s original, Distal has produced something truly brilliant. In stark contrast to the sublime Youandewan remix and Gerry Read’s killer original, Distal grabs the key elements and transforms them into an awesome juke workout. Drawing on an arsenal of stunning original features, this hyperkinetic version is bursting with character, energy and colour. On the flip, we welcome back Sully, who first saw wax on 2nd Drop with the anthemic Give Me Up in mid 2008. As a big fan of 23hz & Numaestro’s original, Sully asked to remix Zumo soon after it’s release in early 2009. Failed hardrives and a quiet 2010 for the label sadly meant this remix with its shifting syncopated beat patterns and moody El-B-esque swing, was sat on. Until now. Beautifully placed to carry on the Sully sound after his critically acclaimed album on Keysound in September, this long overdue remix now gets the release it deserves. Coincidently, the artist on both of the original releases was our mysterious Portugese illustrator and graffiti activist Uiu. So in the spirit of the release we asked him to remix both the original illustrations to create a new version for this release. The featured art ensued. Slightly bonkers, but amazing!

WNCL009 – Knowing Looks – Listen To My 45 / Ghost Baby – 10″ Vinyl
KNOWING LOOKS kicked off 2011 for WNCL Recordings with with his much loved, hard stepping ABANDONED SKIP, backed with the acclaimed symphonic masterpiece that was LAST KISS AT THE PLAINS HOTEL. Jason Hopfner is back again to neatly tie up a busy year at WNCL HQ, unveilling the classically constructed epic LISTEN TO MY 45 – described by BEN UFO as “lovely. gorgeous. slick. buff etc” …and who are we to disagree. Just do what it says on the tin, then flip over for GHOST BABY – yet another fine example from Hopfner’s rich and varied production cannon, melding super cool minimalism with party breaks. Merry Christmas from the Cassette Library!

DB063 – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – 12″ Vinyl
I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. So peace to Dj Cra$y wherever you are and respect to BrEaCh for putting these together. best, VonStroke.

HFT020 – Locked Groove – Rooted EP – 12″ Vinyl
Hotflush presents the debut 12″ from Belgian newcomer Locked Groove aka Tim Van de Meutter. The young producer delivers three hypnotizing and genre bending tracks that expertly weave the sounds of Berghain, soulful house and UK garage into a single crushing package. The “Rooted” EP draws you in with the title track, bouncing along to an acid baseline, then moves onto “Drowning”, a moody techno track that was included on Scuba’s DJ-Kicks mix compilation, filled with drum and ambient samples taken from field recordings. Lastly, “Change”, a production that smartly melds classic house grooves with industrial techno, demonstrates Locked Groove’s rhythmic finesse and long-term promise as an artist.

PNTS002 – Magnum – All Over Me EP – 12″ Vinyl
After the widespread success of PNTS001 (Visionistʼs ʻMr. 67ʼ), the South London based imprint returns with another hard hitter in Magnumʼs ʻAll Over Me E.P.ʼ Fresh from recent moves on Nightshifters, Gradient Audio, Soukouch Ethnik and Inhale including a remix of Canblaster, the Puerto Rican producer has quickly built up much notoriety in his home country and is beginning to develop a following in the UK with numerous plays from Rinse FMʼs Scratcha DVA and Randomer. The title track of this latest excursion is as much a robust 808/909 dance floor mover as it is an all out, arms in the air, hairs on the back of your neck serotonin overload. Its winding arpeggiated synths, lush pads, and tear-jerking vocals show Magnum to be an artist of meticulous attention to detail. On the b-side, ʻDenseʼ is a straight up banger. Crafty bass deployment, rustic synth chords and informed jungle referencing all contribute to what has got to be one of the hardest hitting tracks this winter. Also on the b is the French Fries remix of ʻDenseʼ. As we all know anything the Parisian touches turns to gold and this is no exception. Taking Magnumʼs original concept and stripping it back he adds a touch of grime into the melting pot, à la Slimzee sets circa 2001, and deals with the low end as only one of the finest bass operators would.

With support from pioneering Dj’s such as Youngsta & Hatcha, this first release from the Artikal camp brings back the original vibe of the dubstep genre, a weighty bass bin punisher. The flip includes a remix by DJ Madd which delves even deeper to deliver rolling beats and bass for the largest of soundsystems.

SIL010 – The Phantom – EP2 – 12″ Vinyl
After almost 2 years of serving slices of their idea on cutting edge house music on a solely digital basis, the belgian Silverback Recordings now releases its first vinyl…  On “EP 2″ polish producer The Phantom demonstrates he’s a master at creating a soulful, genre-bending, futuristic blend, whilst paying homage to rich Chicago, UK garage, and Detroit traditions, to name but a few. On the A-side “Ceremony” starts off on a smooth hip hop flavored tip, before brilliantly building bridges to piano driven house. “Gothic” holds tight to hybrid thoughts with its melodically mutant, starry-eyed take on grime. The B-side sees an ever-escalating “Voyeur” balancing a fine line between languid safe havens and the abyss of syncopated chaos. The Phantom affirms he’s in control though, as he steps back a few paces on “Colossus”, and serves funked up, eighties evoking, electronic jams as a discursive ender to this trippy four-tracker. Highly acclaimed and limited to 300 12″ copies.  Support by Ikonika, Hackman, Canblaster, French Fries, Teki Latex, Round Table Knights, Dubbel Dutch, Brenmar, Lol Boys, Blackwax, Optimum, Chaos in the CBD, Lil Silva, Martelo,…

Monolake – Ghosts [ML026] Imbalance Computer Music

Posted 06 January 2012 | By | Categories: news, player | No Comments

Two years after Monolake’s ‘Silence’ release, Robert Henke is back with a new Monolake album entitled ‘Ghosts’. Dark and colorful, with haunting and deep excursions into magic worlds of sound and grooves, held together by a fragmentary story as part of the artwork that indicates a continuation of themes present on ‘Silence’: Precisely crafted earthshaking beats, rough dirty noises, wide lush soundscapes and little sonic creatures inhabiting a fascinating planet in which a lot of things go badly wrong and nothing is taken for granted.  Music that augments reality when listening to whilst commuting, music to get lost in when experienced loud in a club. There is nothing minimal in that music, it is bass heavy and full of detail.

Ghosts is released on Robert Henke’s own label Imbalance Computer Music on CD, double vinyl in gatefold packaging and download. The vinyl version includes on bonus CD with all tracks in digital format. CD version comes in luxury digipack.

The title of this album, Ghosts, came to my mind at a quite early stage. I liked it due of the large field of associations it provokes. I started taking notes about topics connected to the term, read about mythologies and collected ideas. I also often write fragmentary texts, short cinematic scenes that I come up with when my head is idling and I have time to kill. One of these texts is included in the artwork of the CD and the vinyl edition and it is an essential part of the Ghosts album, it serves as a window to a bigger drama, and the music offers another view. The text also links the Ghosts album to the Silence album from 2009. Both stories are related, I just don’t know yet how.

Independently of the aim to create a new album I constantly try out things in the studio, and some day in December 2010 a structure started to emerge that had a dark and evil quality. I knew this would become a core part of a future album and I gave that sketch the working title ‘Ghosts’. Finding new material with similar color turned out to be more difficult than I did anticipate so I changed my strategy and worked on sounds and shapes of very different vibe; whimsical little sonic creatures, potentially mean or helpful spirits that have their very own life. I recorded and transformed sounds from objects I found in my flat; glasses, paper, thin plastic sheets, stones, pebbles in a salad bowl and so on. I believe I became a pretty good foley artist by doing so. The track ‘Taku’ mainly consists of recordings I made with two empty glasses clicking at each other, and ‘Unstable Matter’ is an exercise in applying complex transformations to all kinds of recordings: a bunch of vintage cymbals, my own voice, metal plates, singing bowls, bells, and a rusty hi-hat.

During the entire year 2011 I composed a lot of sketches, mainly rhythmical tracks, but most of them I had to discarded at some point. Either I did not like specific elements in them or they did not fit in my theme of a world of ghosts. Very often I assigned the same title to numerous different tracks in that process, since I did like the title and the message it potentially could convey but not the music assigned to it. ‘Foreign Object’ is the most extreme case here; a track with that name got completely discarded on the evening prior to the final CD mastering process and replaced by a new composition created in a rush at that very night: During the creation process of the album I spent a lot of time trying out different orders of tracks, order is important to me, I aim to create a work of art that works as one large structure, not just an arbitrary collection of songs. Even whilst, or maybe even because this is not the way most music is consumed in the age of random mp3 collections.

I always felt that my Ghosts album needs to end with the track ‘Ghosts’ and every other decision had to be a consequence of this paradigm. I wanted the album to end with a dark and sad message: get out of my head. you do not exist anymore. However, when playing back the final edits in Basel prior to the mastering, my friend and host Daniel Teige insisted that ‘Ghosts’ has to be the first track and just grabbed my computer to completely rearrange the album. Blame him on the final order of tracks on this CD. After his intervention everything seemed to make much more sense, the transitions between the emotional states of each track provided new pleasurable surprises – apart from the very end of the album, which just did not work at all anymore. I decided that there are only two possible ways out; either entirely discarding the last track and ending with ‘Aligning the Daemon’ or coming up with something new in three hours, with nothing but my laptop on a chair, and two cheap hi-fi speakers. The ghosts and spirits of that night liked the idea, and when they told me to record a Macintosh system voice and showed me how to transform these recordings in a parody of a medieval chant full of devilish minor thirds I knew it would turn out to be great.

The album was composed, edited and recorded entirely in Ableton Live and the synthetic sounds are the results of tweaking the Operator, Simpler, Sampler and Live’s audio effects, my Max4Live synthesizer ‘Granulator’, a bit of convolution reverb and a lot of Live’s own reverb. An important role in the sound design also played the creative usage of Live’s various time stretch algorithms. The ‘Tension’ synthesizer’s physical model of a violin string bombarded with rapid parameter changes sent from a Max patch is responsible for the odd sounds on ‘Phenomenon’. Other important contributions to my sonic universe come from my collection of vintage hardware synthesizers: Resonant timbres of a Sequential Circuits Prophet VS on ‘Afterglow’, bell-like sounds of a NED Synclavier II on ‘Foreign Object’, various timbres from a Yamaha DX-27 piped through an Alesis Quadraverb and a Lexicon PCM-80 reverb, pads from a Oberheim Xpander and more I forgot about. Very essential for my creative process and for the incredible fun whilst working on this album are my newly acquired Strauss SE NF-3 studio monitors. One of my best purchases ever. The entire album was recorded in 96kHz and only the final master files were down-sampled to 44.1k for the CD / mp3 releases.

‘Ghosts’ has been mastered in December 2011 at Idee und Klang in Basel by Daniel Dettwieler. Playing back the individual songs directly from my original sessions in Live at his room equipped with Strauss SE MF-2 speakers and state of the art DA converters allowed me to control the spatial placement and final corrections of timbres in each track in more detail than I ever dreamed of.
During the creation of Ghosts several friends provided essential support, critical comments and inspiration: Justine Lera, Torsten Pröfrock, Susanne Kirchmayr, Gerhard Behles, Vance Galloway, Harry Ed Roland, Stefan Brunner, Matt Jackson, Johannes Kiersch, Tarik Barri, Daniel Teige, Daniel Dettwieler.

Recorded bit by bit at the Foggy Playground Berlin.

New D&B Releases

PM022 – Paradox – Paralexia / Ambiguity – 12″ Vinyl
As the Ramifications LP does the long-player rounds Paradox returns to the solo 12” fold with a fresh slab of analogue power. Paralexia steps into the arena with an alarm drone leaving you guessing what’s going to happen next and then a thudding-kick bursts a swinging breakbeat wide open in bluenote-esque fashion. As the track progresses the drums pick up the pace reminiscent of Paradox’s early work on the legendary Certificate 18 label. Dub vocal samples soaked in fx, eerie soundscapes and distorted subs add a deep rumble to the intricately-placed breaks and tension of Paralexia. Ambiguity has b-boy etched on its headplate from the word go. A rare breakbeat gets the full Paradox treatment and dragged back from the 70’s into the future. Sinister vocals and synth pads set an unclear mood whilst spinning-break patterns and sub booms tie the track together in true Paradox style. One for the beatheads! DJ Support: dBridge, Presha, Loxy, Fracture, Ink, A-sides, FD, Mark System, Aphex Twin.

MODULE009 – Mortem – Get Closer / Monoveler – 10″ Vinyl
Critical’s Modulations marches forward this time picking up even more new talent in the form of Mortem. Coming straight out of Poland this marks another solid step in Mortem’s burgeoning career, his first official release for the Critical stamp and a great pre-cursor for the future; there’s a lot more lined up in the studio where this came from, trust us! Smooth, ethereal pads abound as ‘Get Closer’ opens proceedings with tapping percussion and a rocksteady break that set the mood. A low-slung tech-drenched bassline is what this is all about and when it drops it rolls hard drawing influence from that old Virus space funk sound from yesteryear. A very polished piece of production indeed. ‘Monoveler’ is sinister from the off, industrial borders on the medieval as the intro paves the way into a future-glitch b-line that claws its way inside the mix as the bars move forward in a tense battle all the way to the bitter end. A very cool indication of what more is in store from Mr Mortem.

P51UK024 – Gridlok – Insecticide / Dirtball – 12″ Vinyl
America’s number one drum & bass producer is about to hit the streets again with a solo outing on his own label: Project 51. Ryan Powell aka Gridlok is no new comer to the game! After releasing his 1st single over a decade ago he has appeared on all the top labels such as Ram Records, C.I.A, Playaz, Renegade Hardware, and Violence Recordings. Not only that but throughout the years he has gained support from some of the worlds finest DJ’s such as Andy C, Hype, Marky, Friction, and many more! Now we turn the pages as USA’S number one is back with two stinking tunes worthy of a rewind. Starting off the proceedings Insecticide gets the ball rolling. With mysterious vibes, twisted soundscapes, and not forgetting those swarms of killer bees stinging at your ear drums, all before that heavy kick and snare starts piercing those speak boxes. The intro gets the blood pumping and then that dirty sub bass-line kicks you below the waist line. Hard beats and thumping bass is key on this number and will destroy any dance floor known to man! Do not miss out on this soon to be top shelf classic for many years to come as the man like Gridlok never fails to disappoint. Moving forward we come to Dirtball which again has that horror film, soundtrack intro, that will make you toss and turn in bed at night before that crisp beat and fluctuating bass punch you right between the eyes. Top hi-hats ride out into the night while the rest of the percussion sits nicely between those warped out moving bass notes and well produced beats. Gridlok is a force to be reckoned with as he shows us why he has been coined as America’s topnotch producer. I am sure we will hear more stormers in the months to come on his prolific label that has pushed the harder sound of drum & bass for almost a decade! (Words by DJ Silver)

DIS051 – Octane & DLR / Octane, DLR & EBK – Back In The Grind (Cern & Dabs Rmx) / Zulu Fade – 12″ Vinyl
As an amazing piece of work, there is no surprise that the tune could inspire some other great artists. For this one, both big Deep D&B heads Cern & Dabs, the Italian growing talent, decided to gather their efforts in order to revise the original. And something did happen. Cern is undoubtedly one of the deepest NZ producers of the moment. Remarked & signed by Gridlock last year on Project 51 for the great ‘Terminus’ LP, this is unquestionably his best work so far. A true hommage to the undisputed masters of the genre : Octane & DLR. They logically deserved a place on the Bside, joined by EBK for an other crazy masterpiece, ‘Zulu Fade’. A. ‘Back In The Grind’ (Cern & Dabs Mix) Because you can’t seriously have missed this one on the biggest worldwide dancefloors these last months. Andy C himself felt this is going to be one of the best remixes he’s heard all year, and so do we ! Cern & Dabs both provide all the strength and the energy that make up the very secret essence of the perfect dancefloor & intelligent tune. This is a ‘grind’ you’re going to love. AA. ‘Zulu Fade’ Octane, DLR & EBK From the very first steps you’re dived into the strange tribal world of ‘Zulu Fade’. Some original swollen basslines, special Octane & DLR imprint, meet the warlike drums and stark cold reeces of EBK. It’s grating, mighty, captivating. You’re in the jungle, surrounded by hostile faces staring at you. Warrior tomtoms start behind. Take your breath. And run. DJ support from: Hybris, Safire, Hydro, Vicious Circle, Survival, Marky, Ant TC1, Ulterior Motive, Andy C, Need For Mirrors, Skeptical, Xtrah, SPY, Artificial Intelligence, Amoss, Nymfo, Mindscape, Chris SU, Break & Kasra, to name a few.

New Bass Music CD

EXITCD010 – Consequence – Test Dream LP – CD
New Zealand’s downtempo-bass producer Consequence, aka Cam McLaren, always treads the line musically, to the point that the line became blurred entirely. His debut album, ‘Live For Never,’ reminded the electronic world of the intricacies and emotional heights of Drum & Bass, and carried the genre into new realms of sonic possibility. ‘Live For Never’ appealed to different scenes across the board (and around the world), receiving rapturous applause from electronic music’s toughest critics (Resident Advisor, Boomkat, FACT) and magazine gurus alike (DJ Magazine, IDJ). In March 2011, Consequence made his second album appearance on Exit Records with Joe Seven, as They Live: the duo’s ‘Cancel Standard’ was an immersive, sci-fi laced album that set the bar for the year rather high. Consequence decided to end 2011 with one more album, however: his long-awaited sophomore solo LP: ‘Test Dream.’ ‘Test Dream’ is not for those who expect the next logical evolution of ‘Live For Never.’ It’s also not for the unadventurous, nor for those who seek easily digestible music. Creatively free, Consequence revels in pure electronic experimentation, and the result is an album that follows no rules, and explores fractal dimensions that defy conventional genres. The downtempo compositions on the LP manage to hold the intensity and propelling urgency of high BPM electronic music, even though some of the tracks are relatively beatless. ‘Before I Go’ takes the listener to space and back, while ‘Can’t Say’ comes through with staggered synths and rugged drums, building an atmosphere where each sound tells a story. ‘Marlo’, meanwhile, is a welcome retreat from the tension built in its predecessors, with a reassuring melody, softly rhythmic snaps and handclaps, smooth vocals and warm pads. ‘Of Uncertainty’ reveals a slow beauty that builds with impeccable grace, adding colours, slowed vocals and tranquil atmospheres along the way. Ever a many-faced producer, Consequence’s album takes a few forays into more haunting, cryptic territories. ‘Just Water’, filled with creepy effects and sinister samples, leaves the listener nothing short of on-edge, especially with a finale that sounds not much unlike C3PO being ripped to shreds. And ‘Magda Trench’ sounds like a video game that’s burning under a microscope, rendering fractured pixels into outer space. Staying true to his roots, Consequence brings the album back through the tangles of the jungle, and voyages into heavier D&B landscapes. ‘Oden‘ and ‘Soul Sees Spirit’ feel slightly apocalyptic, with soaring ominous-filled synth builds and hard-hitting drums that will darken (and deepen) any dancefloor instantaneously. There are many surprises tucked within, too, of course. ‘Re-occuring’ has ascending melodies that sound as though they could dance in a Giorgio Moroder universe: a transportive space-capade that gives an aural tour through a cluster of stars. Powered by a stuttered melody on a wavering synth line, ‘Lovershell’ is one for code-crackers: an intriguing ball of chaos that slowly starts to make sense as it comes together. The dub-drenched ‘Slant’ starts out mysterious in feel, takes a swift turn for anxiety and suddenly breaks into an enigmatic poem slowly recited in a sing-song manner. ‘Untitled’, with a yearning vocal that floats through an ambiguous atmosphere, closes the album on that typical Consequence note: with lines being tightrope-walked and left obliterated. ‘Test Dream’ grows and unfolds more with each listen, giving way to explorations of dense sound universes.

HEK014 – Guy Andrews – Shades / Textures – 12″ Vinyl
Hemlock are proud to introduce the debut for Brighton boy Guy Andrews. Two tracks of brilliantly unpredictable, percussive wizardry with more twists than a season of the Killing. ’Shades’ combines of precision drum edits, killer 808 booms and woodblock percussion that will bring a tear of nostalgia to the eye of the Blue Note & Metalheadz vets and a smile to the face of the most discerning new dancefloors. ’Textures’ on the flip kills it with an arrangement that just keeps you guessing. Perfectly poised between light & dark, delicate & heavy, and taking you seamlessly from locked 4/4 to dubbed out techno via all-out percussive funk and back before you know it.

MEDI047 – Skream – Gritty / Phatty Drummer – 12″ Vinyl
Is there anything left to say about Oliver ‘Skream’ Jones the original Dub-step wonder kid that hasn’t already been said, probably not, but for those of you that don’t know here’s a brief history. Skream is one of the founder members of the then UK’s Dubstep movement alongside Digital Mystikz, Benga, Loefah, Kode9 etc and has taken the scene from its original darkest depths of Croydon to the top of the worldwide charts in less than 7 years. Currently one third of the chart topping super group ‘Magnetic Man’ alongside Artwork and Benga, the latter with whom he has travelled the globe DJing, selling out clubs, gigs and festivals wherever they go and who now have a semi regular prime time dance show on BBC Radio 1 showcasing the freshest and heaviest Dubstep joints. I think it’s safe to say without Skream the world of Dubstep would be in a very, very different place. Although some of Skream’s recent productions are finding their way onto daytime radio he has always been an ambassador of hard experimental underground UK dance music and this is exactly what he has delivered for DEEP MEDi. Gritty & Phatty Drummer are his second release for Mala’s (label and showcase Skream’s unquestionable production talent and ear for some of the coldest, stripped back skeletal rhythms around, both tracks are packed with enough dread and sub-weight to give you nightmares, strictly soundsystem music…

ACLBL001 – Presk & Cinnaman – Sweat – 12″ Vinyl
Having released the anonymous and enormous F**k Yonkers bootleg earlier this year, the Amsterdam based Audio Culture Label is poised to unleash their first official release,,a piece of music which is the result of the collaborative efforts of Dutch wunderkind Presk and Amsterdam’s premier tastemaker Cinnaman. In part, Pieter ‘Presk’ Willems’ support is responsible for the label’s inception. In a short space of time Presk has built up a solid and impressively distinct sounding catalogue of work released on respected imprints such as Ramp sister label Fourth Wave and Doc Daneeka’s Ten Thousand Yen. Making a name for himself with nothing more than his hands and impeccable taste, Yuri ‘Cinnaman’ Boselie has become somewhat of a musical institution in Amsterdam. He’s the man behind the ground breaking Colors nights and is responsible for the equally forward thinking Beat Dimensions compilations. The B-side features two expertly remixed and uniquely different takes on the original, courtesy of non other than Instra:mental’s Jon Convex and Ten Thousand Yen head honcho Doc Daneeka.

New D&B CD

EXITCD009 – Loxy & Resound – Burning Shadows – CD

Exit Boss dBridge put it himself: “I really love how there’s the reggae side to Loxy’s productions; I thought his sound would really come together as a a whole album, especially with the tech side of Resound. With an album, you’ve got 72 minutes to fill the space with whatever your heart desires. I just love what Loxy & Resound do, so I told them to write the album that they wanted to make. I feel like I got the best out of them this way.”

3 Loxy & Resound – Part Human
4 Loxy & Resound – Black Hole
5 Loxy & Resound – Declaration

New D&B Releases

MARS002 – Mute & Mako – Essential Forms / Who Knows – 12″ Vinyl
Mute & Mako have already proved how good an outfit they are with releases on Mako’s very own label ‘Utopia Music’ & their excellent ‘Astral Transmissions’ on Ingredients, not to mention ‘Rorschach’ on the Recipe Book LP. Well they’re back again with another killer release. “Essential Forms” has all the hallmarks of mid 90’s d&b with it’s long intro, tight drum workout and sublime arrangement. The flip is just as strong, taking you back to an artist called Shogun on Renegade recordings around 1996, this wicked roller is a joy to mix. Keep an eye on this trio!
DJ support: Doc Scott, Dj Lee, dRamatic & dbAudio, Bryan Gee, Ltj Bukem

TKRUK002 – Prolix – Who Run It / Skull Snapz – 12″ Vinyl
TRENDKILL RECORDS is proud to bring you its second release from PROLIX (Playaz, Ganjatek, Metalheadz, Virus, Viper, Uprising, Renegade Hardware). The A Side is a hip-hop vocal infused stomper with huge beats and distorted basslines with hooks that keep you wanting more and more. The AA is a energetic filter workout which twists and turns leaving listeners dizzy with excitement! Both tunes have had great responses on dance floors across the world, and the versatility of these beats will ensure you keep them in your bag for years.

C4CEVR001 – Task Horizon – Kill The Pain / Letting Go – 12″ Vinyl
Kill The Pain: ‘Epic’ is the only way to describe the extended intro of Kill the Pain, featuring acoustic guitar and an earnest male vocal. Then, just before two minutes in, things quickly take a nasty turn as choppy breaks splinter into pieces and the bassline ‘reboots’ The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An aggressive, genre bending, sure fire floor smasher. Letting Go: Teaming up with Kryteria for the flip, a eurphoric, trancey intro leads into a chainsaw reece, setting the scene for the chaotic chiaroscuro to come: beyond the drop sweeping synths and ethereal vocal snippets somehow successfully coalesce with heavily edited breaks and sawing bass, creating a kind of beautiful violence. Subsequently, side effects of Letting Go include spontaneous eruptions of feet on the floor and hands in the air.

SECOPS018 – Robert Manos – Trouble – 12″ Vinyl
It’s been some time since Robert Manos has had a release on Secret Operations. With this single it’s been worth the wait. A. TROUBLE is a deep and emotional track that really shows what Manos is famous for. The depth of the track gets compensated by heavy compressed beats. AA. MADNESS This sparse, beautifully structured track with its elegant instrumentation featuring congas and pianos feels a bit more chill but also plays well in the clubs.

DETAIL008 – Lynx – Devil’s In The Detail Part One – 12″ Vinyl
Opening cut ‘Without Warning’ recalls the tune that rewrote the rules and made Lynx’s name back in 2007, Disco Dodo. One of the true last Dnb anthems that transcended the niches that so often divide the genre. He’s come a long way since then, and recent releases for Metalheadz, Soul:r, Brownswood, Black Acre and his own Detail stable have demonstrated his quality across the board. Lynx’s trademark sonics run throughout the LP, splicing together time signatures and tempos to represent his sound and his label in the fullest. Collaborating with a diverse range of artists in the true spirit of eclecticism, familiar faces including Kemo, DRS, Fats and Deeizm step up to provide vocals whilst the likes of Marcus Intalex and Noisia weigh in to join Lynx at the controls. With a widescreen vision far beyond simple dancefloor drum & bass, Lynx sets out where others fear to tread and crosses bass music boundaries and delivers a complete package with the kind of finesse only an experienced producer of his calibre can accomplish.
Radio & club play is coming from all corners with Andy C, Bailey (BBC 1Xtra), Camo & Krooked, Culture Shock, dBridge, Doc Scott, Flight, Friction, Hype, Klute, Noisia, Marcus Intalex, Presha, Shy FX, Youngsta (Rinse FM) and Zero T in support Andy C: Without Warning is sick bro! Great vibe! dBridge: Really loving the album – Playskool is my favourite Culture Shock: Without Warning sounds amazing! Love the groove Ant TC1: Gonna love spinning these! Refreshing to know the music is still safe for a while to come when I hear stuff like this

Sato has already had some big releases on Creative Source, Ingredients and Hospital, and really steps up to the standards you’d expect on Symmetry. Break delivers the goods with the A side, “Framework” is seriously infectious and will destroy any sound system, while Sato’s “Clap Ya Hands” is a quality dj friendly roll out, with some serious dubwise sub bass. WHEELYDEALY025 – Benton – Wormholes / Sleepless – 12″ Vinyl
Benton’s been firing out the highest calibre of releases recently, and this, his third for Wheel & Deal, is no exception. Sleepless was featured on the mighty Wheel & Deal Vol1 Album Mixed by N-Type. Another deep roller, industrial warped bass and snare, crisp percussion and deep sub. Played out exclusively by N-Type, Youngsta, Distance and Walsh. Wormholes: A dark rolling monster, spaced out and sparse with a chest rattling sub and minimal percussion. Benton’s signature industrial basses sear through the darkness giving you more cutting edge half step, a sound originally coined by Youngsta in 2004. This has been battered exclusively by Youngsta, N-Type, Distance.

EXIT036 – Consequence – Test Dream LP Sampler – 12″ Vinyl
The long awaited sequel to the groundbreaking ‘Live For Never’ LP fromNew Zealand electronic wonderkid Consequence is completed and scheduled for a Dec 19th release on Exit Records The release of ‘Live For Never’ reminded the electronic world of the intricacies and emotional heights of Drum & Bass, and carried the genre into new realms of sonic possibility. ʻTest Dreamʼ is not for those who expect the next logical evolution of ʻLive For Never.ʼ It is also not for the unadventurous, nor for those who seek easily digestible music. Creatively free, Consequence revels in pure electronic experimentation, and the result is an album that follows no rules, and explores fractal dimensions that defy conventional genres.

IDLE009 – Outboxx – Aporia / Cromwell – 12″ Vinyl
Rounding off what has been a busy year for Idle Hands comes a 12″ from west country residents Outboxx. This duo, comprised of Jacob Martin (aka Hodge) and Matthew Lambert have steadily built a reputation for themselves with releases on Well Rounded and Immerse. Moving away from the dominant trends in bass music the pair have been forging a sound more akin to early nineties deep house – yet retaining a palette of 2011 sounds. Here they present two tracks – ‘Aporia’ is a lesson in wistful house, all pianos and a sneeky bass drop half way through the tune. ‘Cromwell’ is a straight ahead house roller, but with enough sub to keep the bass enthusiasts happy. Support so far from Ramadanman and Sven Weiseman.

*Limited edition of 500 heavy weight 180g 12″ vinyl*
Landing as the second release from the new French label ClekclekBoom Recordings, young newroller Coni drops us sensitive, deep but yet powerful tracks with sensual r’n'b reworks that would make any female moan. Combining groovy sophisticated house and naughty/soulful bass on the lead track “Luz in Pool”, the parisian takes us to a delightful journey where you’ll be losing yourself. On the flipside, “Suma” is mixing up an uplfiting 90′s r’n'b vocal with a very effective UK Funky drum line. The laid back G-Swagger “Crush” favoring a modern half-tempo 808 rhythm with a sweet subtle voice adding to a haunting purple synth coloration. This 3 track EP is full of heaviness and is already listed as favorite by many established big names. This number is not to be missed!

PSQ007 – Kowton & Tom Dicicco – Untitled EP – 12″ Vinyl
Kowton and Tom Dicicco, residing in Bristol and Manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. Kowton’s seems to come from House, perhaps also Electro and Garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. Tom’s music is Techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 BPM. With these distinctive styles the idea of a split EP might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each other’s originals on the other. Tom Dicicco’s original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. Kowton’s is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along. On the other side of the record, Kowton’s remix of Tom’s original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. Tom’s remix of Kowton rounds off the EP with a return to stab driven Techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London

RWM001 – Lowa – Get Up (Original Mix) / Get Up (Dot Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
One of the first ever female dubstep producers Dot is back with a new record label Read Write Music. Dot has been previously releasing her dubstep production through London based Immigrant Recordings, notably the first female run and musically produced dubstep record label in existence (KidKameleon@XLR8R). Dot’s music gained support throughout the years and has been played by some of the biggest names in the dubstep scene such as Kutz (Wheel&Deal), Mary Anne Hobbs (Xfm), Ramadanman (Hessle,Soul Jazz), L.D. (Ringo,Hyperdub), DJ Chef (Rinse FM, Transition) and others. Dot’s remix of Clara Moreno:Pour Quoi?Nega San Sedalia (out on Far Out Recordings) gained acclaim by the likes of Laurent Garnier, Ross Allen(MoS) and Simon Harrison(Basic Soul). Now opening her own Read Write Music Dot is pleased to present the ‘Get Up EP’ by Lowa/Dot as the first release on the label and judging by the imminent DJ response it looks like this release will be big. Lowa is an Austrian based producer running Shash Records where he releases his own production and music from artists like Abby Lee Tee. ‘Get Up EP’ reminds you why you fell in love in dubstep in the first place. Lowa’s original version of the track Get Up is a mixture of dark 2step vibe blended in with carefully produced fat synths, mysterious pads and a breathtaking bass while Dot’s remix is a pure filthy dancefloor filler with heavy beats and thumping sub bass. It evolves into deeper and heavier drive continuously throughout its development and its hypnotic break adds to the heaviness. A pure dubstep classic you’d be happy to have in your collection as Dot’s releases never tend to disappoint. ‘Get Up EP’ has been spreading with support from dubstep DJ around the world-ranging from Germany to Florida, from UK to Russia and has been played on radios such as RedBull Music Academy Radio. This EP certainly aims to fill the gap of music with a strong socially responsible message and is aiming to encourage debate on the current state of the world we live in.

TSS003 – Trojan Sound System and JFB – Turn to the East – 12″ Vinyl
Limited to 150 white label pressing. “Look to the east for the coming of a black king.” Having smashed dancehalls and festivals throughout Europe over the last 7 years, Trojan Sound System have returned to the studio following their critically acclaimed debut album on Trojan records, “New Rebel Stories”. The songs evolved on classic Reggae anthems in a live sound system context and are now being translated into studio tracks. Debuted at Outlook festival’s main stage a few weeks ago, it destroyed thousands of reggae, dubstep and jungle heads. Trojan Sound System is the performance unit of legendary reggae label Trojan Records. The Sound comprises Daddy Ad, Earl Gateshead, Superfour, Chucky Banton and Jah Buck, all top performers on the London and European sound system scene. They perform at festivals and reggae events all over the world and have crossed over into Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Hip Hop and Dance music clubs and festivals. Recent main stage slots include Camp Bestival, The Garden Festival, Soundwave festival, Reggae Sun Ska and Outlook festival amongst many others. Last year they also sold out two shows at London’s Koko, a serious feat and a benchmark in this authentic reggae sound’s fanbase and potential and return to Koko on October 15th. They are also playing an in-store at London’s Rough Trade East in late September.  “Turn to the East” was written by Superfour, TSS’s energetic and blind vocalist with conscious lyrics and a passionate delivery. The heartfelt chorus is sung by Chucky Banton. The title is inspired by the biblical reference “Look to the east for the coming of a black king” and celebrates numerous black aspirations. Musically, it uses contemporary forms to produce the feel of an ‘80s roots 12” with overpowering bass driving it throughout. Two times DMC champ and Beardyman collaborator, JFB, unleashes a relentless dubstep remix of the track on the B side. There are a string of single releases in the run up to the album on TSS records limited edition white label with more from Toddla T, Jerry Dammers and many more at the production helm with Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad.

Blu Mar Ten new single! [BMT006]

Blu Mar Ten new single! [BMT006]

Posted 15 September 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

This September Blu Mar Ten release the second single from their much-anticipated new album project ‘Love is the Devil’.

A) Problem Child: Fusing the classic Virus sound with Blu Mar Ten’s inimitable ethereal production ‘Problem Child’ is cross-scene classic finding its way into a wide range of sets, from D Bridge and London Elektricity to Hype and Nicky Blackmarket. A deceptively sedate intro of choirs and strings gives way to a rollout full of howling mid-range and sub basses, interspersed with phrases of pure distortion all gliding over a set of sleazily funky breaks. Watch out for the rollercoaster reese on the second drop, guaranteed to send any club potty.

AA) Sweet Little Supernova: In stark contrast, ‘Sweet Little Supernova’ showcases the talents of Rochelle Parker who delivers a Cocteau Twins-esque vocal over Blu Mar Ten’s dense music. An acoustic percussion line underpins a pulsing set of basslines while a soaring mix of organic & synthetic instrumentation weaves around the unearthly vocal, providing a clear feminine counterpoint to ‘Problem Child’s resolutely masculine approach.

Paradox presents “Ramifications” LP [Paradox Music]

Paradox presents “Ramifications” LP [Paradox Music]

Posted 23 May 2011 | By | Categories: news | 1 Comment

June 6th 2011 sees a rare solo-Paradox LP hit the world’s record stores after a 9-year album exile.
The ‘Ramifications LP’ is a welcome return to the building blocks of breakbeat wizadry that Paradox built up during his reign at 4-Hero’s legendary Reinforced Records and this third artist instalment (and incredibly Mr Pandya’s ninth vinyl album overall) is his best studio album to date.

You need to cast your minds back to 2002 to dig up the last Paradox long-player with it’s collection of Jungle and Breakbeat tempos with a Live P.A. DVD to boot, and the ‘Ramifications LP’ continues the fashion with razor sharp breaks and grooves ranging from 125 to 172 bpm in classic Paradox style.
